A Week Yacht Charter Itinerary from Athens to the Cyclades Islands
Let’s start a dream journey to discover the pearls of the Aegean Sea: rocky landscapes full of buildings and churches in white and cobalt blue. Golden beaches, olive groves, mountains, lands of shepherds, fishermen, and interesting archaeological ruins surrounded by emerald seas, sun, and the Meltemi, a dry and warm wind.
VIEW ALL THE BOATS BASED IN ATHENS
8 Days / 7 Nights Charter Itinerary from Athens to the Cyclades Islands
Day 1 – Itinerary from Athens to the Cyclades
Athens → Cape Sounion → Kea
Marina Alimos – Kalamaki, in the heart of Athens, is one of the best places to embark on a Cruise to the Cyclades. Cape Sounion, just an hour far from the port of Athens, is the southernmost point of the Attica coast and is perfect for a dip in the crystal clear water in front of the majestic Temple of Poseidon before heading, in 45 minutes, to Kea island where you can admire the curved bay of Korissia in front of Vourkari, the main anchorage for yachts and an excellent place to stop for the night.
Day 2 – Itinerary from Athens to the Cyclades
Kea → Syros → Naxos
Natural beauties are protagonists in Kea’s Pisses beach, just 15 minutes far from Korissia while Koundouros beach, to the south, is enchanting with its blue sea and stone windmills. Reach the beautiful and elegant island of Syros in 1 hour where you can take a complete island tour with a catamaran in just 75 minutes from the port of Ermoupolis. About an hour separates Syros to Naxos island, the homonymous capital of the island with the main port for a night stop.
Day 3 – Itinerary from Athens to the Cyclades
Naxos – Paros – Ios
Before leaving Naxos, you can explore its southwest coast with the beaches of Agios Georgios and Mikri Vigla.
Paros is separated from Naxos by a canal of only 5 km in length. It is full of sea caves and beaches including Chrysi Akti from which you can reach the island of Ios in about 60 minutes and dock at the port of Gialos. Manganari town is perfect for relaxing while Mylopotas can be the dock to stop at night.
Day 4 – Itinerary from Athens to the Cyclades
Ios → Santorini
It takes about 45 minutes by boat from Ios to land at the small Armeni pier in Santorini. In the nearby Ammoudi bay, you can swim and admire the village of Oia and its famous sunset. The vibrant atmosphere of Santorini and the pristine landscapes forged by great eruptions such as the Caldera is a marvel even at nightfall.
Day 5 – Itinerary from Athens to the Cyclades
Santorini → Folegandros
After leaving Santorini you can head to Folegandros in an hour with your rented catamaran. The island is small, rocky with extraordinary villages such as the scenic Chora, the fishing port of Karavostasi with its three bays! Livadi and Angali are strips of fine sand between high cliffs, real pristine paradises where you can spend time in total relaxation.
Day 6 – Itinerary from Athens to the Cyclades
Folegandros → Milos
You can set sail from Folegandros to Milos in about 90 minutes and moor in Adama’s pier. The extraordinary bay of Milos has many colors thanks to the mineral-rich soil. Sarakiniko and Kastanas with colored pebbles are among its most beautiful beaches. The coves look like fjords while the caves and arches can also be explored by swimming such as the suggestive Sykia Sea Cave.
Day 7 – Itinerary from Athens to the Cyclades
Sifnos → Serifos
Before reaching Sifnos, refined and almost unreal in the port of Kamares, you can stop to swim in Platys Gialos or Vathy. Half an hour from Sifnos is Serifos with the beaches near the port of Livadi that slope gently, surrounded by tamarisk trees. To the south is Agios Sostis, nestled in a small bay dominated by a lovely white and blue church.
Day 8 – Itinerary from Athens to the Cyclades
Kythnos → Athens
We leave Serifos to reach Kythnos, one of the most intact and lively villages of the Cyclades. Kolona is a stretch of golden sand that stretches to the uninhabited islet of Agios Loukas. Liotrivi reveals many indigo blue coves while Katafiki is the largest cave in the Cyclades. On the way to Athens, you can stop at the beautiful Vouliagmeni bay before reaching the port of Cape Sounion.

Rent A Car in Athens Greece
Places to visit in Athens
The Attica Zoological Park dates back to 2000 and currently houses nearly 300 different species of bird. It is one of the largest bird parks in the world and it can be found on the outskirts of Athens (near Spata). There are also other animals housed here and it is a great day out for all the family with a children's play area and picnic area. The park is open all year round.
When you rent a car, Athens Greece is a great place for those who want to see more of the city's historical attractions. These include the Panathenaic Stadium which can be found close to Ardittos Hill. This is in the Pangrati area of the city and was host to the 1896 Olympics, considered to be the first modern Olympics. The site was chosen as it was also the site of the city's older stadium, constructed over 2000 years earlier. Those who visit this attraction can also catch the odd show as it still hosts some events and has seating for up to 80,000 people.
For other shows there is the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron Moussikis in Greek). This can be found in the city's Mavili Square region (near the American Embassy). The exterior of the building was constructed from marble and the interiors are equally as impressive. There are two concert halls here and some of the world's top musical stars have performed in this venue. Tickets for these shows tend to sell very quickly so it is a good idea to book as far in advance as possible if there is something that you particularly want to see.
The Athens Riviera
When you rent a car, Athens Greece opens up a world of possibilities to you. You can explore the city at your leisure, plan your own holiday schedule and travel in comfort. Athens is a beautiful city and the long and varied history makes it one of the most influential cities in the western world. With a range of modern and historical attractions there is something for everyone so there is no reason to get bored.
A visit to the Athens coast areas is not to be missed. Take the Syngrou Avenue to the south and some of the best areas of the Athens Riviera, such as Piraiki coast, Paleo Faliro, Alimos marina, Glyfada, Voula, Kavouri, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Anavyssos and Cape Sounion.

Food, Culture, and Burial Practices of Greece
Edited from the original published August 23, 2017.
This year's big family vacation was a 2-week expedition to Ireland, Italy, and Greece.  I say expedition because traveling with three kids for that period of time feels like an epically exhausting journey across vast lands between sanity and insanity.   I know many of you are probably thinking you should have gone by yourselves!! You may be right but we wanted to take the kids on one or two more vacations with us since they are now young adults and will starting their own adult lives.
Basic Country Statistics
Capital - Athens
Language - Greek
Currency - Euro
Population - 11+ million as of 2010
My family and I stayed in Alimos, a lovely coastal town not far from Athens.  We rented a beautiful 3-bedroom, 2.5 bath ocean view condo on Airbnb for an amazing price.   Way cheaper than renting two hotel rooms for us and our three adult kids, plus the amenities were way better.  It had several balconies accessible from all of the bedrooms and living areas that gave a 180 degree view of the ocean.  If you haven't tried Airbnb yet but are interested, you can use my link to get a $40 credit (www.airbnb.com/c/aporterfield1)
I think our next trip to Greece will be to the island of Aegina. The owner of the condo we rented has a house on the island and it even has a private beach.  Next summer can't some soon enough!!!
THE FOOD
While in Greece, we tried a handful of traditional dishes. Moussaka, a combination of mince meat, potatoes, and eggplant layered and baked, was good and flavorful but I wasn’t fond of the consistency. Pastitsio is a pasta dish that we enjoyed with pasta, mincemeat, and cheese. It was kind of lasagna-ish but not multi layers like we do here in the US. Spanakopita was one of my favorites. They are little pies made with spinach and cheese and very filing. Give me more!!!!!!
Burial Practices
Historically, rectangular tombs were designed with elegantly decorated marble stelai to mark graves. Loved ones would visit the grave often, bringing hand made offerings in order to keep the memory of the deceased alive. It was believed that immortality was achieved through continue remembrance.
Cemeteries and burial practices are such an intimate part of and it helps me understand and connect with the people and their culture. In ancient Greece, at the time of the funeral, offerings were made by relatives and lovers. the house and household items would be thoroughly cleaned with sea water and hyssop (an herb), and then a large feast was held. Failure to perform the necessary and proper funeral rights was seen as an insult, and it was believed that the deceased would then not be able to travel to the afterlife and therefore be forever stuck in purgatory.
In Greek funerals, the casket is always open with a wake taking place in the deceased person’s home. Funeral traditions includes the body being kept and watched throughout the night before burial by a family member. Once upon a time it was common to have professional mourners that were once hired to by the family.
Overcrowding has been a problem in cemeteries in recent decades resulting in grave space being rented out to families. Supply and demand have driven up the prices of grave space with some families being forced to relinquish the space. When that happens, the remains are exhumed and the bones are then moved to an ossuary, This however that comes with a price as well.
Our Accommodations
My family and I stayed in Alimos, a lovely coastal town not far from Athens.  We rented a beautiful 3-bedroom, 2.5 bath ocean view condo on Airbnb for an amazing price.   Way cheaper than renting two hotel rooms for us and our three adult kids, plus the amenities were way better.  It had several balconies accessible from all of the bedrooms and living areas that gave a 180 degree view of the ocean.  If you haven't tried Airbnb yet but are interested, you can use my link to get a $40 credit (www.airbnb.com/c/aporterfield1)
Recommendations
For door to door airport transfers, I recommend Welcome Pickups. They were waiting for us, grabbed our bags, and took us directly to our condo. We had a little mishap with meeting the owner of the condo but the driver assisted us by staying with us and making calls to the owner. The owner was just running late so it all worked out in the end.
If you decide to stay outside of Athens, you can use Uber to get in and out of Athens fairly economically. The drive in from Alimos was enjoyable with it costing $20-ish euros one way. Most of the cars were smaller so be sure to specify a larger car if you have more than 3 in your party.
Til next time......don't forget to make this beautiful day count!

Is Santorini next on your bucket list? Let’s organize a sailing tour there!
If Greece is one of the most popular destinations for boaters from all over the world, Santorini is certainly one of the best known and most loved islands by tourists in general. There is no tour operator that does not propose it to its customers or that organizes itineraries dedicated to this beautiful Aegean Sea pearl.
Follow us in this article that will give you some tips on how, when, and why to rent a boat for a Santorini tour.
CLICK HERE TO GET THE BEST DEALS FOR CHARTER IN SANTORINI
Contrary to what many think, you don’t need to be an expert sailor to experience an unforgettable sailing holiday among the Greek islands. Just pack a good dose of adventure and rely on an experienced crew and skipper. Don’t worry, they are generally already available to you when you decide to charter a boat. You won’t have to be looking for a crew.
Where is Santorini?
Santorini is part of the Cyclades islands, an archipelago made up of dozens (perhaps it is better to say hundreds) of islands and islets located in the middle of the Aegean Sea. Santorini in particular is one of the archipelago’s southernmost islands, about 125 nautical miles from Athens, the Greek capital, and more than 40 miles from Paros and Naxos, the largest islands of the Cyclades.
South from Santorini, we find the island of Crete, only 65 nautical miles away.
What is the best season to visit Santorini?
Being a very sunny island located at rather low altitudes, its best season runs from spring to autumn. However, keep in mind that the central summer months, July and August, are by far the most popular with tourists, and the crowds on the beaches, rather than in front of temples and museums, tend to grow easily during the day.
VIEW ALL THE BOATS IN THE CYCLADES ISLANDS
Another great variable that must always be kept under control is the winds that blow in these areas, especially in the warmer months when the infamous Meltemi winds blow in the Aegean Sea, coming from the north and capable of being truly impetuous. These do not preclude navigation but must be managed by experienced skippers, especially if your idea is to move from one island to another.
Why is Santorini so renowned?
Romantic Santorini is a very special Greek island, at the same time one of the most famous and representative of Greece’s tourist success but also one with its own strong identity that distinguishes it from other islands. In the list of what to see in Santorini in the first place, there are its legendary sunsets, the most beautiful in all of Greece, together with the breathtaking views that can be enjoyed from the top of its caldera, the volcano that made the Santorini landscape unique.
Chic towns and more traditional villages follow one another on this island which obliges the tourist to always have a camera at hand. You can relax on one of its black sand beaches or taste the famous wines of the island in one of its renowned wineries, while for a cultural itinerary you can visit the famous Akrotiri ruins.
What is the advantage of a boat tour in Santorini?
Many answers could be given to this question but the one that is certainly the most important is freedom: the freedom to move from one beach to another without problems of time, means of transport or traffic, freedom to always choose your next destination, freedom to relax while enjoying a sunset sipping a good wine, freedom to finally enjoy some well-deserved rest while a select and competent crew takes care of you.
If these ‘freedoms’ have convinced you, contact Your Boat Holiday and immediately start making the dream of a sailing holiday come true!
Where is it convenient to set sail to reach Santorini?
If you are wondering which marina is best to sail to this island, the answer is simply from any! Santorini can be easily reached from all the main Cyclades ports such as Paros or Mykonos and also from those close to Athens, such as Alimos and Lavrion. You can therefore take the opportunity to organize an itinerary that takes you between the islands that separate you from Santorini.
Recommended: Mykonos day yacht charter
Is it possible to sail directly from Santorini?
Although it is so famous, Santorini does not have a real marina from which to set sail as the seabed that characterizes the island is much lower than elsewhere. This has led most of the shipowners and charter companies to prefer other islands, as we said in the previous paragraph.
Of course, if necessary, it is still possible to request to sail directly from Santorini through a delivery service, which however will involve additional costs.
Finally, we recommend an example of a classic itinerary that always leaves our customers very satisfied and that can be modified and expanded as you wish!
12 days boat tour itinerary of Santorini and the Cyclades
Day 1 – 2: Naxos
Day 3 – 4: Mykonos
Day 5-6: Paros
Day 7: Antiparos
Day 8 – 9: Ios
Day 10 – 11 – 12: Santorini

Have you ever heard about Aruba? A paradise suitable for any season break!
Phenomenal beaches and a tropical climate. These are the reasons why Aruba welcomes more than a million tourists every year who come to this beautiful destination from all over the world. One of the best and most common ways to visit it is certainly renting a yacht or a catamaran, feel free to visit this paradise island far and wide.
CONTACT YBH FOR A CHARTER IN ARUBA
If you’re already fantasizing about your next boat trip to Aruba, read on and find out the reasons why you should rush to charter a boat here for your next vacation.
This island belonging to the Netherlands Kingdom is located in the Caribbean Sea and has a population of only 103,000 inhabitants. Aruba is one of the most touristy islands in the southern Caribbean. The Dutch heritage is mainly reflected in the architecture of the country’s cities. It is an example of this the capital, Oranjestad, a coastal city located in the southern part of the country.
Where is Aruba located?
Aruba is a quiet destination located south of the Caribbean Sea. It is part of the Lesser Antilles, that is, the arc of islands and islets that ideally divides the Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean.
However, it is only 15 km far from Venezuela’s northern coast, and in fact, from its southeastern side is possible to see the mainland.
What climate to expect in Aruba?
If you are wondering what is the best time to visit it, know that the answer is very simple: all year round. According to some of the best in the Caribbean, Aruba has a warm and dry climate but tempered by pleasant trade winds all year round.
Being a Caribbean island positioned very south, its climate is around 31 ° C / 87.8 ° F with sea temperatures that during the high season remain constant on an average of 29 ° C / 84.2 ° F.
After dark, the heat remains in the air as temperatures drop to 25 ° C / 77 ° F.
How to get to Aruba?
Aruba’s Queen Beatrix Airport is located on the south coast, approximately 6 km southeast of Oranjestad.
Many visitors from around the world arrive on charter flights that stopover in the United States or Canada. The Dutch company KLM instead operates direct flights from Amsterdam, while some South American companies offer connections to and from Venezuela and Colombia. Finally, the island company Air Aruba provides frequent flights to the nearby islands of Bonaire and Curaçao.
Why rent a yacht in Aruba?
Aruba is known as a yacht charter paradise especially during the high season, which at these latitudes runs from December to April, but also throughout the rest of the year.
On the island there is a large selection of various yachts and charter boats of all types and sizes: motor yachts, sailing yachts, catamarans, superyachts, or megayachts, there is certainly no lack of choice!
But, what is the main reason why this island has become so important for this type of holiday? First of all, as mentioned above, thanks to the exceptional climate it enjoys, as well as to a calm sea and the sky almost always clear and blue thanks to the constant trade winds that blow in these areas. They are also very helpful in nautical charter circuits.
The main reason, however, is that Aruba is located outside the hurricane belt that generally laps the Caribbean in the summer months and therefore offers visitors a certain safety that cannot be found elsewhere. In fact, the eastern sea winds never reach more than 20 knots.
Why is Aruba part of the so-called “ABC archipelago”?
Based on the wishes of the clientele, organized boat tours in Aruba are often combined with a visit to two other very close destinations: the islands of Bonaire and Curaçao.
An important yacht charter circuit was formed this way, visited and traveled by thousands of people every year. Due to the combination of these three islands, it is now known as the ABC islands archipelago, taking into account the first letter of each island name.
What beaches you won’t miss in Aruba?
Choosing which beaches are the best among Aruba’s many white-sand beaches is really difficult.
Mangel Halto, located in the middle of the west coast, is ideal for sunbathing and snorkeling with its calm waters full of marine life and surrounded by a dense mangroves network.
The natural lagoon of Baby Beach in the southeastern part of Aruba, near San Nicolas, is a true Caribbean paradise.
One of Aruba’s favorite beaches, Arashi Beach, is the perfect place to snorkel thanks to the gentle currents and lively underwater life. It is located almost in the extreme north of the island.
Voted one of the best white sand beaches in the world, Eagle Beach, the largest beach in Aruba, famous for its soft white sand.
Finally, you cannot miss a visit to the two private islands of De Palm and Renaissance, home to the famous and typical pink flamingos!
