lockdown film no. 33 - Gladiator (2000) dir. Ridley Scott
13/05/2020
- I saw this film the first time when I was maybe 13? My dad decided that it was time for me to watch this Oscar winning epic, but we had to watch it in two parts because it was so long, and pretty damn violent for squeamish, baby me. Me and Dad managed this all in one, seven years later
- the opening is… really something isn’t it
- (just found out it was filmed in Surrey. Gutted)
- I got shivers right through to my scalp when he made that first speech to his soldiers that ends with “Brothers — what we do in life echoes in eternity.” Genius (there’s a chance it was because my room is the temperature of the arctic but nonetheless it was very moving)
- I had a foley workshop this morning and my tutor was talking about how foley should be subtle, but often the sounds need to be exaggerated so we’re absolutely sure that what we’re hearing is what we’re meant to be hearing. Likely because I came in with that mindset, they went absolutely ham thick on the foley for the opening battle scene
- “Enough of politics. Let us pretend that you are a loving daughter, and I am a loving father” — the fact that this line was said quite gently by Richard Harris’ Caesar Marcus Aurelius makes it so heartbreaking because there is absolutely no pretence that their family’s relationship is outrageously dysfunctional, and that’s not even getting onto the incest
- Joaquin phoenix is great in this. When he’s told he isn’t going to be emperor he’s like a stroppy kid who just wants to make his dad proud of him and now he’s a psychopath. That scene’s fantastic anyway, I love how the statue of caesar is right on commodus’ shoulder the whole way through, and really oppressive after commodus has killed Marcus Aurelius
- also fun fact about that scene — apparently phoenix was so stressed out about shooting it that he fainted right after they cut
- the little *fwoop* when he flipped the sword over was a bit much and then saying “the frost. Sometimes it makes the blade stick” before slicing the other guy felt a bit too bondy for this but you know what ? I respect the swagger
- there was an absolutely ineffable sense of dread and pure terror when the roman army was approaching maximus’ home and his son was running and waving thinking it was him. I hated that bit
- “those giraffes you sold me. They won’t mate. They just walk around eating, and not mating. You sold me… queer giraffes.” Whoever wrote this deserves every Oscar this film won, and I want it framed in my kitchen
- I enjoy the fact that they could have so easily done a training montage gladiator style when Maximus had been bought by proximo. Instead they took time to get a bit more into his character and for us to meet juba and the other gladiators. We didn’t need to see him training as a gladiator, that’s not what we’re here for. This film isn’t about fighting — sure, it’s got some great scenes in the colosseum which are entertaining to watch, and there’s stacks of gratuitous violence, but I feel in this case it’s warranted because you can’t get away from the brutality of the games in this context. The film itself is more about Maximus as a general, a gladiator, a husband, father and person and how he relates to the ever conflicting idea of “Rome” and the permanent violence it seems to require to keep that idea going under the reign of commodus. Maximus was required to kill in the army, but there it felt like it was for a purpose: to protect the idea of Rome and the emperor and the people that he cares—here he is required to kill just because he is required to kill. That would obviously change the dynamic but it says a lot about his character that he doesn’t seem to have any qualms about killing a person he doesn’t know for the entertainment of more people he doesn’t know and will likely never meet
- when Maximus walks through the cage it exactly mirrors the opening scene and him walking by all his soldiers as they salute him as their leader and I really liked that
- “i did not say I knew him, I said he touched me on the shoulder once” — why does this film have so many relatable lines
- one of my favourite things about this film is essentially nothing to do with the film itself, and it’s how my dad will yell stuff from it at opportune moments. When I was learning to drive and going round corners, he would say “hold the line” like Maximus does in the amphitheatre. once, when we were climbing up a hill and it got a bit steeper near the top and I got a bit more tired and started to slow, he clapped me on the shoulder, pointed up the hill and yelled “STRENGTH AND HONOUR! HOLD THE LINE! STAY WITH ME!” just to encourage me up this hill and I love him so much for it
- absolutely cannot stand the bit in the chariot fight where the archer woman gets fully sliced in half. Couldn’t deal with it in 2013 and can’t deal with it now
- fun fact this film got the thumbs up thumbs down thing the wrong way round. In the scene where maximus’ identity was revealed to commodus, he moves his hand from a neutral position to his thumb pointing upwards, which means that he is sparing maximus. Often the emperor would use this code to signal to the winning gladiator if they should kill the loser. However, apparently thumb down didn’t mean “finish them”, it actually meant “throw down your weapon”, and the thumb pointing upward was meant to symbolise the sword thrusting up into the loser’s body. However this might also might be incorrect, I have not by any means done extensive research
- “it vexes me. I am terribly vexed.” Another classic dad quote
- just ruminating on ancient rome. Legitimately cannot imagine a worse occupation than being a gladiator. I’m sure if I thought about it a bit more I’d think of worse jobs, but right now, this is the one
- they used… real tigers for the scene with Tigris ??? Not happy about that. First of all, how ?
- I love the constant talk of the dream that was Rome, and the constant talk in tandem of the mob and how fickle they are. There is the dream that is Rome and there is the reality of the fickle mob. They obviously can’t coexist but those everyone we meet wants something better, in some way
- I don’t know if phoenix made a conscious decision about his speech but it really fit with what I said before about him being a petulant child because his speech didn't sound completely developed and reminded me of a child’s speech in how he pronounces certain letters. It adds so much to the character because he is a completely abhorrent person who wants to sleep with his sister and have a pure blood heir, have complete control over the roman empire and kill anyone who comes between his dream of what that empire could be under him. But then at the same time he sounds like a kid who’s not getting his own way
- I do not want a snake in my bed
- ‘“Strength and honour,” Maximus said to Juba. The two men smiled and rested their foreheads together.’ I did beam at this bit
- apparently proximo was meant to live in the original version of the film, but Oliver reed died during production, before all his scenes were filmed, so his character had to be killed. The last shot of him is from the back, so we don’t see his face, and a shot from earlier where he says “shadows and dust” is cut in right before he dies. The film was dedicated to reed’s memory
- OH another thing I Loved about commodus was how he had a white horse, and white armour in the final battle with maximus, while maximus has black armour, which is the standard. Because commodus has such an idea of who he is, and in his mind, he is Rome’s saviour, even though he knows full well he doesn’t have any of the qualities of a good emperor. White is typically the colour used to signify that a character is good, and pure, etc. so I really enjoyed the inversion of that to show commodus’ character and the character he wants Rome to see
- this isn’t a film about violence, it’s about a philosophy
- one last thing is that when I rewatch films to write up these things, I often skip parts because I get the gist of what’s going on and I don’t need to watch the whole thing. With this, even though it was 2 hours 35, I watched the whole thing, and I think that says a lot about how good a film it is

Hi friends! I humbly bring you Cordelia Du Pont, aka Lady! Her info is under the read more but she’s pretty well-adjusted/nothing traumatic has happened to her really. She’s just living her life as a nurse in Grimmbrook, sister to Casper, overall good vibes sooo let me know if you’d like to plot!
i began in the light –
NAME: Cordelia Lucille Du Pont
GOES BY: Cordelia, Cordy, Del
AGE: 33
BIRTHDAY: April 26 , 1986
FATHER: Howard Du Pont
MOTHER: Irene Du Pont
BROTHER: Casper Du Pont
HOMETOWN: Grimmbook
JOB: Nurse
OTHER IDENTIFIERS: Taurus, Enneagram Type 1 (The Reformer), ENFJ (The Protagonist)
and found, we are all stories anyway,
GROWING UP (tw: drug use)
She up with a well-to-do family and that set her up for a good life tbh
Her dad wasn’t around much but, as his little girl, he doted on her and that made big bro Caspy Casp resent her even more. Their mom loved her valium because life was just so rough and nannies helped raise the kiddos.
She was put into basically every extracurricular activity possible: ballet to piano to soccer and gymnastics, to art classes and being forced to sit still and learn new languages –– Cordelia had a great aptitude for learning most things but being the best at any one thing was never her main concern, like it was her parent’s.
They were absent but around enough to care that she got the gold, or first place or the best grades, and she often did but when she didn’t, Cordelia never understood why it upset them so much. Being the best wasn’t everything so long as a) you were enjoying yourself and b) you weren’t hurting anyone else and c) maybe you were even helping someone out.
These things, combined with her general disposition to care and want to make things right made her the prime candidate to get excited about a nurse’s speech during career day one year in high school.
YOUNG ADULT LIFE
Her parents were NOT a fan but she did what she wanted, which was to, ya know, be a nurse and not a doctor.
She was salutatorian, which would’ve made most parents happy and hers were “proud” but they just wondered why she hadn’t made valedictorian. Still, she’d lived with this dynamic for long enough that it just didn’t phase her as much (or so she said) and she focused on her goals.
She got into the nursing residency program at Grimmbrook Memorial Hospital and loved the fact that she got shuffled in with everyone else, nothing special about her. It made life better, she felt, when you weren’t trying to get to the top of the class or program. When you tried to do your best, the rest usually followed.
PRESENT
She’s been a nurse for over a decade now and still loves her job. She’s made some of her closest friends because of it and is constantly learning.
Currently, she still wishes she were closer to her big bro but they have that dynamic where no one can mess with their sibling except each other no matter how annoying she is to him or vice-versa. Du Ponts are Du Ponts are Du Ponts.
With Madison’s death, she feels horribly for the Redding family. She always thought Little Red was a horrible site but she wouldn’t have wished that on anyone. She knows Chad a bit through his work as an EMT but was never really closer than that but she can tell the family’s suffering.
Things feel off in town but she’s doing her best to focus on work and the people she can actually help.
we are all characters on a page;
PERSONALITY TRAITS (+): encouraging, intentional, charming, loyal, intrepid, altruistic.
PERSONALITY TRAITS (-): stubborn, opinionated, overly-idealistic, overly invested, hasty.
OVERALL: Cordelia is the type of person who, if you met her on the street and told her you were going to be running a marathon that weekend, she’d be there cheering you on just because everyone deserve to have someone who pushes them to do their best, who helps them believe in themselves a little more today, than they did yesterday. She’s a loyal to those she calls friend and is quick to defend even those whom she doesn’t know, if she sees them in need.
She can be a bit stubborn when she believes in something. Getting Cordelia to give even an inch when she’s fully invested in something is like trying to move a mountain. Still, her investments aren’t always healthy and sometimes she gets overly invested in helping people, to her own detriment. Cordelia’s learned over the years that people can’t be rushed and that not everyone wants to be helped, and that’s alright. She doesn’t mind waiting until they do. S
She’s a shoulder to lean on and someone who will help you up again. She remembers birthdays, sends cards for literally any accomplishment, and goes to any performance/event/speech someone’s giving to support them. Overall, a classic good bean™, lionhearted and bold, Cordelia Du Pont is a good person to know, and an even better friend to have.

Dexter Family Newsletter 2019
Dexter Family Newsletter 2019
As I reflect back on our year, I can’t help but think of Charles Dickens and his classic line…..It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…...and how appropriate it might be to summarize our 2019.
It was the age of wisdom…….as in Kelsi completing her first year in grad school at Rockhurst University in Kansas City. If you didn’t know Kelsi and listened to her talk about school, you might think she is barely passing. If I had a nickel for every time Kelsi told me something like….That final exam did not go well; I did terrible….Only for me to later find out that she got something like a 107 on the test, well then I might have a lot of nickels to jingle in my pocket. Kelsi is getting all A’s as usual and well on her way to graduating in 2020 with a Masters in Speech Pathology. She is enjoying her classes and her clinical training, and has a great supervisor who is guiding her to be gainfully employed later in 2020, most likely in a school setting. Nic is also excelling at Rockhurst and working on his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. What impresses me most about Nic and Kelsi is that they indeed have wisdom in their respective areas of study. In other words, they really seem to know their shit. Meanwhile, Kaylee Jo is now in her sophomore year in high school where she obsesses about getting good grades, which she always does. Ava Jae is in 8th grade and doing well. Don’t tell anyone, but, I consider her my smartest kid.
It was the age of foolishness…….as in Mike spending countless hours managing and competing in a mere 7 fantasy football leagues, or in Mike completing his 42nd Old Chicago World Beer Tour. Along the way, I earned a leather lettermen jacket which Kelly just today told me that I looked like my Dad when wearing it. I took that as a compliment and proudly wore it about town where people looked at me in awe, as they often do, but, I digress. Mike also became a more well-rounded drinker in 2019. You see, I was lucky to get to spend a lot of time with my eldest daughter this summer who not only got me addicted to the Crime Junkies Podcast, but also too good wine. Credit is also due to the great Tackes family for showing me the redeeming virtues of drinking wine and now even whiskey. So don’t be surprised to see me knocking back a Red Cab or sipping a bourbon in a cool sophisticated fashion. If only, I had known about these things years ago…..what might have been, or perhaps not been, like 42 beer tours.
It was the epoch of belief……..in love and marriage as Kelsi became Mrs. Nic Arnone on August 10th in what turned out be an awesome ceremony and beautiful day for the two of them. When they were both working on details like what are we having for having for dessert a couple of days before the big day, I was frankly a little worried, but, as it turns out the two of them are master wedding planners. Everything was great from the venue, to the decorations, to the caterer, to the photographer, and most importantly…..to the bartender, backed by yours truly stocking the bar. Yes, we had an awesome reception and we were so blessed to have so many of you travel all the way to Kansas City to celebrate with us! In case you weren’t able to be there, rumor has it that there is video available of Mike’s fantastic wedding toast speech. Sure, there are critics like Kaylee and Ava who will say, it wasn’t all that, but, most of those at the reception gave me high fives for my performanceat least the ones who were drinking that is. Kelsi is most happy that as a Speech Therapist that I finally learned how to pronounce her new last name. For those of you who don’t know, you need to emphasize the last “e” in Arnone as it is an Italian name. After meeting Nic’s family, I finally believe he is indeed Italian, after I had long presumed he was Norwegian or Swedish given his fair skin, blue eyed, blonde hair good looks.
It was the epoch of incredulity…….and speaking of family heritage, Mike took the Ancestry DNA test in 2019. Upon arrival of the test kit, I was in great disbelief as to how hard it actually is to fill up a one ounce test tube with saliva. Trust me, it was challenging. As it turns out, I am 59% English, 33% Irish, 3% Swedish, 3% German, and 2% Norwegian, which makes me 110% Awesome, which I didn’t need a DNA test to know. So far, it is incredulous that I have not found any long lost rich relatives who want to connect with me, but, I will keep the hope. Speaking of incredulous, Ava will be in high school next year, while Kaylee will have her Driver’s License in as few as 17 more days! I for one can’t believe we all survived her driver’s training, which started in local parking lots and proceeded to hairpin turns, around tight corners, at the speed of light. Only A.J. Foyt could have pulled off some of the harrowing driving miracles that I witnessed at times this summer! But, we all survived, and with no dents in our vehicles! I joke (sort of); Kaylee is actually a very good driver and was even told that she best driver in her Driver’s Ed class. So you can feel safe when you see her drive by you in her 2007 BMW, which Drew gave to her as a Christmas present to her shrieking delight. This is now the 2nd time Drew has given a car to one of his sisters. I can only hope that he has another one to hand down to Ava in a few years. The good news for Ava is that Drew has said that his next car will be a Tesla.
Even more incredulous is that a once self-proclaimed liberal, who once carved a pumpkin in the likeness of then candidate Barack Obama is morphing into a conservative right before our very eyes. Yes, people are in a state of disbelief over these developments. While he does not yet host a show on Fox News, many have looked in disbelief at Mike as he shares his theories on the likes of capital punishment. Not to mention, the poor teachers of Dunlap who look to their email boxes in fear that they might receive another long diatribe from Mike on what is wrong with our educational system. Don’t worry, Mike still has a few liberal ideas and is still proud of President Obama. But, might we see a Trump carved pumpkin on Mike’s doorstep in 2020?
As a final point on incredulity, I bet you can’t believe how long this newsletter is as I can’t believe you are still reading it. Don’t worry, more good stuff is coming.
It was the season of light……for Nic and Kelsi who enjoyed an awesome honeymoon trip to Disney and the bright beaches of Ft. Lauderdale. Kelly and Ava also traveled to sunny Florida, with stops at Disney and the beaches of Tampa-St. Pete, while attending Ava’s Starquest World Dance Finals in Orlando. Ava and her dance teammates at MLSD continued to shine on the dance floor, while bringing home lots of trophies along the way. Ava and her DMS POMS teammates also brought home a trophy from the State Finals this year in the Jr. High Division. Ava is again on the DMS POMS team and also spending lots of time at the MLSD dance studio. We can’t wait to see her compete again in 2020, which will include her first ever solo performance. And, her latest dance project involves trying to teach her Dad how to dance in Tik Tok videos with her! These will surely go viral. Meanwhile, Ava is still Ava….always energetic, always wanting to do something, always wanting Starbucks, and always, always asking me for something or to do something. She is my constant season of light. In fact, I sometimes think of Ava as Carol Anne like from the Poltergeist movie. You see she has a life force that is hard to match and keeps me smiling, cursing, smiling, yelling smiling and speaking of yelling….. Kelly might occasionally yell at Ava (as she is this very minute!) and/or Kaylee for their continued inability and/or unwillingness to do seemingly simple things like throw a wrapper in the actual garbage can, maintain a room where you can actually see the floor, etc. Kelly is still Kelly, the straw that stirs our drink, the one who tries to keep us in check, and the one we, including our dogs can all rely on. Kelly continues to work with awesome kids, who happen to have a few special needs, at Dunlap Middle School. I likely have said this before, but, they, like us, are lucky to have her.
The season of light was also in full effect for Drew in 2019. Like most people do, he took a month vacation, this time in sunny South Africa, where he did things like go on a safari, dive into the ocean in a shark cage to see a Great White, see the great water falls of Victoria Falls, hang out in the desert of Namibia, and lounge on the beaches and climb the mountains of Cape Town. He also spent a month in Manhattan for work. Drew lives in the River North area of Chicago, where we all enjoy visiting him. Thanksgiving in Chicago was a highlight. In January, Drew has plans to visit Vietnam for a few weeks and make a stop at Boracay in the Philippines. Yes, it sucks to be Drew. He will also have extended work assignments in Boston and Washington, D.C., so stay tuned to his social media pages for amazing photographs and drone videos to document his journeys.
It was the season of darkness…….for both Mike and Kaylee, who unlike the rest of the family did not feel the sand under their toes of the warm sunshine upon their faces. The longest trip these two took in 2019 was to Rochester, Minnesota, in the midst of winter, to attend Kaylee’s Speedo Sectional Championship Meet. Despite the cold and snow, we both had fun. And in the hopes of coming out of the darkness, I admit to the world (and mostly Kelly) that I received a speeding ticket on the way home, while dodging potholes and trying to stay interested while driving the monotonous roadways of the northland. This has been a secret that only Kaylee and I have shared, with Kaylee often smiling and blurting out a whoo-whoo-police siren like sound anytime she felt it necessary to seek favor with me, while in the presence of my wife. So, Kelly, my beautiful, loving, forgiving wife, now you know and Kaylee, you have nothing to hold over my head any longer, at least for the time being.
It was the spring of hope…….for Kaylee and her commitment to the sport of swimming. She continues to love the sport, and work hard, and has renewed resolve to achieve her goals. She has a group of great friends on the team and is driven by Jersey Mike, her new coach, who yours truly worked hard to recruit to Peoria, along with the rest of it was the PAWW team. Kaylee made a tough decision to forgo her high school swim season in favor of making a greater training commitment. I was proud of her resolve in making this decision and remain proud of her in all aspects of what she does, and who she is, with the great exception of her sense of what a clean room is J.
It was the winter of despair…….as Kelly and Mike look around their house and dream of home improvements in 2020, while still wondering how we can pay for things like dance classes, swimming, and college. Kelly and Mike did close out the year by replacing our 20 year old kitchen appliances. Back to those kids who can’t seem to hit the broad side of a barn with a wrapper, let alone a waste basket, we purchased a fancy new waste can in a last ditch effort to solve the problem. The new stainless steel trash can is our new pride and joy and opens automatically at the wave of the hand. While enjoying all this new technology, our dryer just went out, so back to Sherman’s we go! Speaking of technology, Kelly and Mike finished the year with a fun night in Chicago where a true life robot delivered “forgotten toothbrushes” to our room. In addition to home improvements in the New Year, more resolutions for Mike include meditation, yoga, and drinking more wine (but only the good stuff). I think all three of these can likely be done at the same time.
Yes, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times….Like all families, we had some challenges to deal with, but those were far outweighed by many blessings. I am very lucky to have an awesome wife, four awesome kids and new son-in-law, our two awesome dogs Tahyo and Isla, along with our awesome family and friends. We have had a wonderful Christmas as a family and look forward to a great 2020! Thank you and Merry New Year to you all! May God bless you in new ways in the New Year!
P.S. – I consider this a living document in that I will likely be asked to edit for omissions, inaccuracies, offenses to my beloved family members, or over the likely fact that I wrote some of the same exact words last year.

2019!
I've done this year-in-review thing since 2007! 2007-2012 are over on my old LiveJournal, and 2013-on are right here on my Tumblr. :)
2020. 2020! That year sounds space-age or something lol, and not like it's just, well, tomorrow. Happy New Year, Tumblr!
What did you do in 2019 that you'd never done before?
Not too much, lol! I guess I just kept doing the things I usually do, but tried to do them better/improve them (when it comes to work!), or do more of them (fun times and family times!).
Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Every year I mention that I don't really make New Year's resolutions - more like little goals all year! - but hey, it's a new decade! This year I think I will make a resolution that I will hold myself to. In 2020, I resolve to work hard - like really hard - on being healthy! Eat right, exercise, lose weight, work on maintaining less stress - be good to myself! I know everyone makes that kind of resolution, but it's a good one for a reason. :)
Did anyone close to you give birth?
Aw, no new babies this year!
Did anyone close to you die?
Sadly, yes... my uncle (my dad's oldest brother) passed away in May. ♥ We also lost a beloved neighbor in August.
What countries did you visit?
Lol, none!
What would you like to have in 2020 that you lacked in 2019?
I seemed to lack the ability to chill this year, haha - I stressed out about everything! :O So I’m ready to go with the flow better in 2020!
What date(s) from 2019 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Can’t think of any big dates, but this December marked 5 years since I graduated (and gave a speech at the departmental ceremony, to toot my own horn lol!) from the University of Maryland! Time is bizarre - 5 years feels both forever ago and also not that far back!
What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I’ve been working in the registrar’s office at a community college for three years now! I love it, and I’m proud of the work I do!! :)
What was your biggest failure?
Everything’s a learning experience of course lol, but thankfully I didn’t goof too bad this year! ;)
Did you suffer illness or injury?
Oh my goodness, I started off the year with a thumping in my right ear (the name for it is “pulsatile tinnitus” - which somehow makes it sound scary!). :O Happily, that mess dissipated in a few months’ time, but it sure did worry (and annoy) me! Other than that - all good! :)
What was the best thing you bought?
I was very fortunate this year to buy a few things that really made me smile!
I do love a perfume! Dior Addict is a stunning, spicy vanilla (I love ‘em sweet!) that really hits the spot.
I’m also pleased, on the “I stan goofy dance music” front, to have found a couple of old Ministry of Sound compilations that I’ve had bookmarked on Amazon for awhile - they came back in stock this year and I snatched ‘em up. Anthems Sound of Dubstep (2012) is brash and obnoxious fun, and Sessions Ten (2013) is slightly less brash but just as obnoxious so I love it. They’re both releases from the Australian arm of MOS!
Oh and one of my fave used record stores had a copy of one of DJ Rap’s “Bad Girl” CD singles with mixes I didn’t have; I was kinda shocked to see it and very very happy to buy it! It was only 99 cents. Wow!! I do like a ridiculous deal! :)
Whose behavior merited celebration?
My mom is amazing, as always, and so are my dad and brother! I love my fam!!
Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
No one!
Where did most of your money go?
See above - my more frivolous spending went toward perfume and goofy dance tunes, haha!
What did you get really, really, really excited about?
I will never, ever forget opening a very special present for Christmas this year. I love and adore It’s a Wonderful Life, and I even wrote a paper about it in college. I used a fabulous book as one of my sources - The It’s a Wonderful Life Book by Jeanine Basinger - and since then I’ve always had it in the back of my mind to purchase it someday. It’s a fantastic keepsake kinda thing for a fan of the movie. Unfortunately it always seemed to be out of stock, or way too expensive to consider, so over time I kind of just put it on the back burner.
But just a few days ago on Christmas morning as we all opened gifts, I tore wrapping paper off a box, pulled off the box top, and bam - there it was. Decorative tissue paper obscured it, but I could see the book cover peeking through - The It’s a Wonderful Life Book! My mama, the best mama, found this awesome book for me! My Christmas - my year! - was made! ♥
What song will always remind you of 2019?
Here’s a Spotify playlist of the songs that I loved this year; most are old releases lol. New(er) songs and albums I loved this year:
“Like Sugar” by Chaka Khan. Funky!
“Lost in the Fire” by Gesaffelstein feat. The Weeknd. Cool and atmospheric!
“Lights Up” by Harry Styles. Boy band guy makes good lol! Great tune.
Mazy Fly (2019) by SPELLLING. Dark, richly layered, weird, beautiful.
The Destroyer - 1 and The Destroyer - 2 (2019) by TR/ST. Two EP-ish releases that make up a whole album-ish listen. The Destoyer - 1 slightly edges out the second release, but I just like hearing so much synthy TR/ST goodness!
Compared to this time last year (2018), are you:
Doin' all right, and hopeful for a great start to 2020!
What do you wish you'd done more of?
Listen to more albums - new or old! The last few years I seem to listen to a handful of albums a year, then spend the rest of my music-listening time playing dance music compilations. Ah well, maybe I'll catch up on my massive "to listen" list in the next decade lol!
What do you wish you'd done less of?
Stress (see above lol) - but I'm def working on it! :)
How did you spend Christmas?
Family time!! ♥
What was the most embarrassing thing that happened to you in 2019?
Nothing, yay lol!
How many one-night stands?
None lol
What was your favorite TV program?
My silly cartoons! Family Guy, American Dad, Bob's Burgers, and SpongeBob SquarePants (lol idk, nostalgia is hard to kick!) still make me laugh even though I am otherwise a perfectly reasonable adult. :)
Bravo's Real Housewives - all of 'em! - crack me up and bring the totally ridiculous drama!
The Orville is fantastic, one of my fave more recent shows. I love the cast! Each episode really adds to their stories and builds the show's world. Looking forward to the next season!
Emergence is a great new sci-fi show with a strong cast - especially the sensible, big-hearted lead Allison Tolman - and suspenseful storyline!
I haven't seen the first season, and to be honest I don't think I'd be able to explain what the heck it's actually about because I'm easily confused, but American Gods caught my attention this year! The cast is excellent - even if the plot escaped me, lol, I really got into the characters.
And What We Do In The Shadows! Such a delight!!
How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2019?
I love a classic, slightly minimal style, but I'm just happy to look decently put-together lol!
What kept you sane?
My fam, my entertainment stuff (music, movies, TV, magazines), working with wonderful colleagues... ♥
Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No! :O
What was the best book you read in 2019?
The It’s a Wonderful Life Book was probably the best book I read (well, most of it!) this decade. ♥
What was your greatest musical discovery?
SPELLLING is awesome - definitely an artist I'm excited to hear more from!!
What did you want and get?
I won't say The It’s a Wonderful Life Book again! :)
On a more serious note, I had my first MRIs in a while for MS maintenance - my previous neurologist retired and my new doctor wanted to get a baseline. I was very, very anxious about getting the results. My former doctor last ordered an MRI in 2011, so this was definitely a good and highly necessary step, but very nerve-wracking! I'm so fortunate to not be experiencing symptoms - and haven't since my initial occurrence of optic neuritis in '09 (though I was actually diagnosed with MS in 2011) - but what might the MRIs (brain and T- and C-spine) reveal?
I wanted to receive good results - a report of stability, not progression. And would you believe it? I did. My (amazing!) neurologist gave me the greatest news I had all year - stable, no new lesions, all good!! Of course this is for now - who knows about the future? - but I'm thrilled, and thankful. As this year ends and I reflect on all the good, this takes the cake!!
What did you want and not get?
Pffft, nothin' lol! I've got so many lovely things and reasons to be thankful - who could ask for more?!
What was your favorite film of this year?
Lol I did not see many new movies, but of the '19 films I saw, my fave was Knives Out! I only just saw it yesterday - what a fun way to close out the year! Fantastic cast, clever story, funny - just all-around entertainment.
I also loved Yesterday. All the Beatles references and the obvious affection for the group and their fans just felt like a great big hug! So good!
What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Girl I'm well and truly a thirty-something now - 33!! I had fun! I did lots of little fun things with my fam - like shopping, watching movies, that kind of good stuff!
What three things would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Like I said above - who could ask for more? Not me! :)
Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I'm late to the David Harbour bandwagon - but better late than never!
And also Daniel Craig in Knives Out was a good thing.
What political issue stirred you the most?
Ew, there's something stirring like every hour or so.
Who did you miss?
Losing my grandmother at the end of last year really colored a lot of this year... and then losing my uncle added more shadows. ♥♥♥
What is a valuable life lesson you learned in 2019?
I always answer this one with a twist on the Pet Shop Boys song title and my life philosophy - "Happiness is an option." So here we go! The chorus of the song acknowledges that "it is not easy," and some times are definitely like that. This year had those moments, and next year will too, because that's how life is! It is often not easy.
But! The last bit of the chorus follows "it is not easy" with "happiness is an option." Things can stink, but they can be okay too. That's what "happiness is an option" has always meant to me, and it means that just as much this year. Maybe even more!!
What quote can be used to sum up your year?
See above haha! "Happiness is an option” has been my fave quote for years, and I’m gonna keep on living it! :)

i’m looking for a wife for joel montgomery (33, chris hemsworth) – he’s an actor/producer from a famous family (you can read about them here) and these two managed to keep their relationship quiet for over four years. they met in 2013 on the set of an indie film and by 2014 they were officially together. he was pretty serious about her from the get go – it’s why he insisted they fly under the radar after he told his family, due to past relationships absolutely tanking thanks to the press. it was nice to have someone who saw him and he could escape it all with (ie. going off the grid together when they both aren’t filming). obviously their families and the closest people they work with knew, but everyone was always really careful about what went on social media and whatnot; they’d arrive/leave at different times but sit by each other at premieres; they’ve worn ridiculous disguises so they can be out in public together; they still hang with other people from the indie film so they’re written off as “reunions”; but the majority of their private time was spent together. joel popped the question two years after they met, and they married in 2016. i’m sure at one point one of his siblings blabbed something about joel being married or his “wife”, but it kind of got brushed to the side except by the fan conspiracy theorists.
tbh being so private was probably a huge point of contention for her especially because joel is a big baby and didn’t want his marriage scrutinized like his parents’ is (despite their issues), and he’s used to always getting his way, but earlier this year, they finally went public! they made their red carpet debut together at an awards ceremony, and she nabbed a best actress award & thanked him in her speech! (a la r@chel brosn@han and j@son r@lph.) there had been rumors around christmas that they were a couple/married, and immediately after the ceremony articles went up talking about how they just got married and people thought this was a relatively recent development. a couple weeks later, she set the record straight and said they’ve been married over two years lol, but they still wouldn’t be talking about their marriage. they have, however, gone out in public together, started posting more about each other on social media (sparingly), and he’s really become her #1 hype man. he’s so proud!!! i’m still deciding what sort of project(s) he’s working on at the moment, but i suspect they’re both in really good places in their careers and really happy they can share their love with the world.
as for where they are now, maybe they’re looking to start a family? joel really wants to be a dad. they could be expecting, or maybe she’s like “dear god not right now”... or maybe they’re having a hard time adjusting to the fact everyone knows about them, whether the trolls are the loudest ones or she didn’t anticipate just how much attention being associated with a montgomery there’d be even though she’d seen it first hand the last few years ... or maybe they’re planning on working together professionally ... or maybe they’re just riding high and taking some time off. i need some fluff in my life but it gets boring without angst tossed in there, so i’m here for developing that with you, whether it’s in their relationship, or something happening to one of them that they’re going through together!
she should be 28-38 and have won at least one significant award this last award season (maybe she’s emmy campaigning rn too if she’s a tv star?). i’m still fleshing him out personality-wise, all i have for him is he’s reserved, takes his craft seriously, and can be pretty melodramatic (half as a joke, but half not bc he can be out of touch from the way he was raised)? so all i have envisioned for her is someone who can hold her own and is pretty compassionate so she can reach him. i definitely have some face suggestions and can be picky, but i’m not dead set on any one atm, so if you’re interested hmu here or on discord!

I know it's a lot! But all of the 65 questions you aren't used to!! I love getting to know the blogs I follow!
Okay love! The last one was a freebie so I guess I’ll just leave that one out haha.
1. Do you ever doubt the existence of others than you?
Na, usually it’s the opposite for me. I don’t feel important enough to be real.
2. On a scale of 1-5, how afraid of the dark are you?
Maybe a 3? I don’t mind the dark as long as my imagination isn’t getting the best of me, which it usually is. I always have my little touch-activated lamp in my room left on at the dimmest setting at night.
3. The person you would never want to meet?
Donald Trump.
4. What is your favorite word?
Drumonios. It’s an Ancient Greek epithet of Artemis, and it means “haunting the woods.” (hey, no one said English word)
5. If you were a type of tree, what would you be?
*in Monty Python voice* THE LARCH
No, but in all seriousness, I’d be a willow. So gentle and comforting, like the tree leaning over to hug you and give you shade.
6. When you looked in the mirror this morning what was the first thing you thought?
Yikes.
7. What shirt are you wearing?
A black shirt with images of moon phases that says “to the moon and back”
8. What do you label yourself as?
Is this a gender/sexual identity question??? Cuz if not I could label myself as anything. But genderwise I’m a cis female and orientation-wise I’m lesbian, biromantic, possibly somewhere on the ace spectrum?
9. Bright room or dark room?
Dark room. Or mostly dark. Dim with a yellowish lamp because I hate white lights.
10. What were you doing at midnight last night?
Talking to my gf on the phone.
11. Favorite age you’ve been so far?
tbh this year, 19. My anxiety’s been better than it ever was. I haven’t been actively suicidal at all this year. I’m just in a better place all around.
12. Who told you they loved you last?
Probably my mom?
13. Your worst enemy?
Myself
14. What is your current desktop picture?
15. Do you like someone?
Romantically? My girlfriend. In general? Everyone who hasn’t crossed me.
16. The last song you listened to?
Right now I’m listening to LA Devotee by Panic! At The Disco :)
17. You can press a button that will make any one person explode. Who would you blow up?
Donald Trump, while he’s in a cabinet meeting so it blows up everyone else there too
18. Who would you really like to just punch in the face?
Donald Trump or my ex
19. If anyone could be your slave for a day, who would it be and what would they have to do?
I don’t really want a slave? Kinda against the whole idea? But ig Thomas Jefferson bc he needs to know what it feels like (Hamilton pettiness coming out oops)
20. What is your best physical attribute? (showing said attribute is optional)
My eyes! Idk if I have a picture that shows them really well? But you can check my selfies tag. They’re deep hazel green with gold flecks.
21. If you were the opposite sex for one day, what would you look like and what would you do?
I would look like historical Alexander Hamilton and I would hang out in history museums freaking people out.
22. Do you have a secret talent? If yes, what is it?
Wouldn’t be a secret if I told you. ;) But seriously, I’m not very private about my talents because I’m proud of them. I write, read, make up codes, solve puzzles, sing, do calligraphy. Sometimes my eyeshadow looks decent.
23. What is one unique thing you’re afraid of?
Most of the unique things are PTSD triggers. The rest of my fears are just normal.
24. You can only have one kind of sandwich. Every sandwich ingredient known to humankind is at your disposal.
Grilled mac and cheese sandwich.
25. You just found $100! How are you going to spend it?
Put it towards saving up for a Switch so I can get the new Pokemon game when it comes out this fall.
26. You just got a free plane ticket to anywhere in the world, but you have to leave immediately. Where are you going to go?
The British Isles, where I will do historical tours and live in the Highlands for a year.
27. An angel appears out of Heaven and offers you a lifetime supply of the alcoholic beverage of your choice. “Be brand-specific” it says. Man! What are you gonna say about that? Even if you don’t drink booze there’s something you can figure out… so what’s it gonna be?
I don’t drink, I’m pretty against it in part because my uncle’s a recovering alcoholic, but I’d say strawberry daquiris? Idk brands, man.
28. You discover a beautiful island upon which you may build your own society. You make the rules. What is the first rule you put into place?
Socialism and if you’re gonna mess up the process and turn it into communism then you’re off the island.
29. What is your favorite expletive?
Fuckweasel. Thanks, Raven Cycle.
30. Your house is on fire, holy shit! You have just enough time to run in there and grab ONE inanimate object. Don’t worry, your loved ones and pets have already made it out safely. So what’s the one thing you’re going to save from that blazing inferno?
My phone I guess?
31. You can erase any horrible experience from your past. What will it be?
Nothing. As much as I hate what I’ve been through (assault by my ex, manipulation by my dad) it’s taught me so much strength and made me who I am. I know red flags. I came out of my shell. I know how to say no, how to cut out toxic family.
32. You got kicked out of the country for being a time-traveling heathen who sleeps with celebrities and has super-powers. But check out this cool shit… you can move to anywhere else in the world!
Scotland.
33. The Celestial Gates Of Beyond have opened, much to your surprise because you didn’t think such a thing existed. Death appears. As it turns out, Death is actually a pretty cool entity, and happens to be in a fantastic mood. Death offers to return the friend/family-member/person/etc. of your choice to the living world. Who will you bring back?
FDR. We have a polio vaccine and he was my favorite president.
34. What was your last dream about?
I was doing a crossword puzzle but, like, it never ended. And the clues kept changing every time I started to write the answer. It sucked.
35. Are you a good….[insert anything you’d like here]?
Nothing was inserted haha so yes. I am a good.
36. Have you ever been admitted to the hospital?
Twice. Once as a baby for my open heart surgery, and once when I was 4 for severe dehydration from the flu.
37. Have you ever built a snowman?
Yes but it’s been like 13 years.
38. What is the color of your socks?
Light blue and white stripes.

Um, I guess the OSU Buckeyes cuz that’s where I live and I hate pro football.
43. Do you have any scars?
I have a huge scar down my chest from my heart surgery, a few self harm scars left, and quite a few from old cat scratches. Also my left knee is covered with scars from being a clumsy child. And I have small birthmarks which correlate to past life injuries which is fun
44. What do you want to be when you graduate?
A librarian/history or English teacher
45. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
My weight.
46. Are you reliable?
Sometimes I flake on plans bc of mental illness, but yes. I am a strong shoulder to lean on, and I will always be there for you.
47. If you could ask your future self one question, what would it be?
Am I trying for the right things?
48. Do you hold grudges?
Not consciously. But there are certain things I haven’t been able to forgive just yet.
49. If you could breed two animals together to defy the laws of nature, what new animal would you create?
Sloth dragon. Sloth with little back scales and wings who flies very slowly and breathes fire when threatened.
50. What is the most unusual conversation you’ve ever had?
My mom and I have the funniest conversations. I couldn’t pick one. Every day between us is just hysterical.
51. Are you a good liar?
Yes. But I don’t lie anymore except when I have to.
52. How long could you go without talking?
Probably forever as long as I could write or text.
53. What has been you worst haircut/style?
When I was 9 I decided to get a shoulder length bob. My hair did not approve. Constant white-fro. I don’t have a picture of it full glory, but this is after having it styled, at age 11, as flat as it would go.
54. Have you ever baked your own cake?
Noooo I suck at baking. I’ve made cookies though.
55. Can you do any accents other than your own?
British, I guess? I do a good Hermione.
56. What do you like on your toast?
Butter lmao I’m classic

‘67 Impala baby.
59. Do you sing in the shower? Or do anything unusual in the shower? Explain.
I, uh give political speeches to the showerhead? It’s the Hamilton mood.
60. Do you believe in aliens?
I definitely believe we can’t live in a universe infinitely big all by ourselves.
61. Do you often read your horoscope?
I don’t read my actual horoscope, but I look at those zodiac posts a lot, and I know my full birth chart.
62. What is your favorite letter of the alphabet?
A and S.
63. Which is cooler: dinosaurs or dragons?
Both. Dinsoaurs could have been dragons, we don’t know.
64. What do you think about babies?
They’re okay til they cry or poop or throw up lmao.

Red Anniversary
What: James and Izzy’s wedding anniversary Who: Everyone and then some When: October 31, 2018
Izzy clinked her glass, getting the attention of everyone in the room. "Thank you everyone for coming to mine and James' anniversary. Only two people so unorthodox as we are would think to get married on Halloween. We didn't want to worry as much with the preparation as enjoying ourselves and the only rule I had for how those in attendance could show up was: nobody could come as a bride. I, myself, was dressed as the Bride of Frankenstein. Of course, this wasn't the wedding that the public saw. Only those who we felt comfortable with. To the world, we didn't get married for another couple of weeks. After we enjoyed our honeymoon. Anyway, James and I met years ago. It actually shocked both of our families that we were in love as being from another world, James was supposed to marry someone from his own world, not little ol' me who grew up in a small house with four sisters and we had to fight over the bathroom. But he did. We fell in love and not long after we even met, we had our first wedding. Between the two weddings, we began our family. When I found out I was going to be a mom--the first time--I was beyond ecstatic, as you can imagine. I was also terrified. I knew James wanted a family, but I was still terrified of telling him. Of course, as soon as the words escaped my lips, he had the biggest grin on his face. He put his hand on my belly, which didn't even have a bump yet, and just held us both. And when Alaska was born, she was the most precious thing in his life. Watching those two was just... amazing. It made me fall even more in love with him. Then we found out not long after that we were expecting, AGAIN. And Ian came along. By this time Alaska had definitely grown into her personality and was the one in charge of the house. Ian, on the other hand, was quite the opposite. He was very subdued and laid-back. Then Miles came along and he wanted to take care of everyone. Then the twins popped out, and they were each other's saving grace. They loved their older brothers and sister, but they were it for each other. They didn't do anything without the other. And finally, Sarah, my baby girl surprised us. We thought we were done with the twins, but then she graced us with her presence. My greatest gift in this world is being James' wife and my beautiful, amazing children's mother, including my adopted babies. Eli and Emily, since you two have come into our family; we've been so beyond blessed. I could not have asked for a better life." She looked around the room, smiling at her beautiful family (even Tristan who was dressed so gruesome) and all their friends.
James smiled at the woman by his side-- whom he had loved for the last 33 years. Everyone had wondered why he'd picked a commoner, someone who didn't have the money or title fit for a prince, but none of those things had ever really mattered to him, and they mattered even less when he met Isobel Serrano. James had been completely taken by the woman, and it hadn't taken long for him to ask for her hand in marriage. It was the best decision he'd ever made, still to this day. Raising his glass to his wife, he squeezed her hand affectionately, looking at her the same way he'd always had-- like a lovestruck puppy. In over thirty years, that hadn't changed-- his once black hair was now mostly gray, his face wrinkled from thirty years of smiles-- but the love was constant. "I won't even attempt to top that beautiful speech from my wife. All I will say is: Izzy, my queen, mother of my children, love of my life-- thank you for sharing a life with me. Thank you for giving me six beautiful children, for being a wonderful mother. They're all grown up now, so our work is mostly done, but everything they are, is thanks to you. I couldn't have asked for a better life-- and I can't wait to spend the next thirty years by your side." He brought Izzy's hand to his lips, giving her knuckles a gentle kiss, before turning to the room filled with their kids, family, and friends dressed up for Halloween. "And I want to thank you all for joining us. Enjoy the party, and Happy Halloween."
Phoebe Listening to the King and Queen's declaration of love caused Phoebe's throat to grow thick with emotion. It was so beautiful to see two people still enamored with one another as they were the day they first met. As the speeches continued, the conversations she'd had with Davina and Tristan were bouncing around in her head, echoing off the surface and refusing to shut up. Both of them were right; annoyingly so. The brunette let out a sigh, hoping that it would come off as dreamy rather than frustrated as she took a sip of her champagne. Once she started planning the wedding, then perhaps the niggling feeling would go away.
Will, dressed as Han Solo, watched his parents, envious of how in love they were. Not because he wasn't in love with someone-- he was just in love with someone he couldn't necessarily have. James and Izzy made it look so easy to just pick a person to be happy with, and maybe it could be, but he was conflicted. He was sure that he could have a content life with his fiance, Phoebe, if he wanted. But would they ever love each other? He didn't think so. He glanced around the large ballroom, searching for the blonde who was constantly on his mind, needing to talk to his best friend, but instead, found himself catching sight of Phoebe. He tore his gaze away, still wanting to find Amber, but she hadn't come to the party, apparently. So with a heavy sigh, he forced a smile and walked over to Phoebe. "Hello, Miss Calloway."
Phoebe Upon hearing her name, Phoebe's ears perked up. Before she even turned her head she made a silent wish for it to be Ian trying to get her attention, but quickly found him elsewhere in the crowd. The brunette bit down on her lip. She couldn't continue thinking like this; Phoebe willed herself to put a smile on her face and get it together. Her body did a 180, coming to face Will and although he hadn't been who she was hoping for, she was glad. They had to get to know each other better at some point. "Will," she replied with the same smile. "Call me Phoebe, please. Miss Calloway is so formal. --You parents are so charming. Those were lovely speeches."
Tris gave her baby sister a break before trying to scare her again, and decided to find her other favorite sibling to pester: Ian. She began walking very slowly behind him, allowing herself to go undetected. “Ian, why aren’t you off trying to woo, Phoebe? Especially after such a gooey speech like Mum and Dad made.” She rested her arm on his shoulder and looked over where her twin and the lady in question were conversing. “Never going to win her heart from the sidelines.”
Amber was hesitant on going to the party, she was never good at those kind of things, but Izzy and James were more like her own parents than her actual parents. She owed it to them. She decided to show up, dressed in a long black dress with a masquerade mask on. Her dress was form fitting, but not in a tacky way. She didn’t have time to get a real costume together and remembered her mask from the year before. When she entered the room, she didn’t realize she had been so late and missed the speech. She began looking around for someone to talk to, making sure to note where Zoey was. Even though she was considered off duty at such events, she always wanted to keep an eye on the little girl.
Miles wandered over to Amanda, nodding when he saw Davina grin and tap her friend. “Ladies, are you enjoying the party?” Davina chuckled and nodded in agreement before making some reason to leave them alone. Miles was appreciative of it, and smiled at Amanda. “Are you enjoying yourself? You look very beautiful tonight.” Miles was dressed as a pirate; he was never great at picking out costumes, but he was quite proud of how it had come together.
Davina left Amanda with her prince and as she had expected, she saw Phoebe with Will. She didn’t like being alone at these kinds of things, but she knew going into it that she was more than likely going to have to entertain herself. With a quick turn on her feet, she headed straight for the food table, not even allowing herself to feel self conscious. When she glanced up from the table, she noticed the only other person she really cared to see that night. She quickly put down the utensils in her hand, and made her way across the floor. She cleared her throat and waved at Eli. “Are you having fun?”
Will kept forgetting to call her by her first name-- yes it was formal, but he was so used to speaking to people he didn't know very well more formally and respectfully than he would speak to someone-- and he just didn't know Phoebe, despite being engaged for a few months now. Something just got in the way everytime they attempted to get to know each other better. But he was determined to try to make it work. "I apologize, I still have trouble not calling you that. --They're pretty much always like that. It's a little nauseating at times." He chuckled.
Ian had excused himself from the date he'd been set up with to grab himself a drink, and almost as soon as he took a sip, Tristan came up and began teasing him. As he glanced at her, he flinched, before letting out a groan. "What are you supposed to be? Are you why Sarah keeps shrieking like she's about to die?" He sighed, shaking his head. "I don't know what you're talking about, Tristan. I don't want to woo anyone, especially not when I have a date. And the person in question is the girl my brother is going to marry," he reminded her, glancing over to see the pair of them together. Despite what was coming out of his mouth, Ian could not help the pang of jealousy he suddenly felt, and he quickly did his best to hide any sign of it from his sister. "They look very happy together."
"It's really not a problem. I sometimes have to bit my tongue so I don't call you 'Your Highness'." Phoebe offered her fiancee an encouraging smile. She felt jittery around him, although Phoebe wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing. They weren't the butterflies of burgeoning feelings that she found herself feeling each time she glanced towards Will's older brother. If anything, it was an aimless anxiety of not knowing what to do or how to act around her betrothed. She didn't know him as well as she wanted to. "I think it's sweet. You don't see two people in love like that nowadays."
Tris smiled. "I'm bloody Mary. Daughter of Henry the Eighth, I am, I am. --Yes, that would be why. It's kind of my job to torture her." She shrugged. As he began talking about all of the reasons she was wrong, she yawned, patting her hand against her mouth. "Blah, blah, blah. You are a terrible liar. Phoebe didn't fight me as much as you are." Tris looked over at the couple and shook her head. "They're trying to be, but failing. Besides, you're especially dense if you don't know that your own brother is already in love with someone else. They're just doing their 'duty'"
Leila didn't know a single person at the party-- her boss had convinced her to come along, to get to know the family they worked for, and Leila, wanting to seem like a trooper, had agreed. She'd put together a quick costume, complete with some cat ears and a mask, and had come along, and was now doing her best to mingle, though she felt like a bit of a wallflower. Needing some liquid courage, she went over to grab a drink, but not before running into a blonde in a mask. "--Oh, I'm so sorry. I haven't even had a drink yet," she murmured with a nervous laugh.
Amber felt someone run into her and turned around to face them. She didn't recognize the person, but that wasn't unusual since she didn't get to mingle very much, except at occasions like this. "No worries," she quickly replied. "I'm quite bad on my own feet as well. I really shouldn't be wearing a long skirt like this and heels, but it didn't seem right to wear any other kind of shoes. --I don't believe we've met before? If we have, I'm terribly sorry. I'm Amber Lucas. I work for the Conroy's." She extended her hand to the girl before her.
Amanda was talking to Davina when Miles came up, and of course she immediately started blushing when Davina pointed him out-- and promptly left Amanda alone with the prince. "I am having a good time, thank you-- are you having a good time?" she asked, turning an even brighter red when he complimented her. "Thank you, Miles. You look very handsome, if you don't mind my saying so. I like your costume, you look awesome." Amanda had decided on the angel costume after all-- her wings were majestic, with white and gold feathers, and her white gown hugged her in all the right places, but kept it appropriate so she felt comfortable. To complete her look was a gold leaf headband-- she thought it looked cooler than a cheap halo.
Elijah was working, but had dressed up for the occasion-- the Conroy's had insisted he be part of the celebration even if he didn't want to take the night off. He was standing off to the side, surveying the room, but he wasn't expecting any danger-- it was an anniversary party, not some big political thing he usually attended. He took a sip of water as his foot tapped along to the music, when he saw Davina come up to him. He immediately straightened up, giving the young woman a smile. "Hi. Well, I'm working, but yes. What about you?"
Miles was so used to being the one who always blushed at the drop of a hat, but when he saw Amanda's cheeks brighten, he noted how cute it was on her. He smiled warmly at her. "I'm glad to hear that." He nodded. "I am. I'm glad to see you here." He looked down and tugged gently on his vest. "Thank you, I tried me best. Arrgh." He did his best attempt at being a pirate, which was laughable. "I love your wings, they're very pretty."
Will nodded in agreement, awkwardly shifting his feet as he glanced around. "Definitely not. Their relationship is kind of one of a kind. No wonder all of us are kind of fucked up and strive for a love like theirs, you know?" He turned over to her, grimacing. "Not that we can't-- I just don't know you-- y'know?"
Phoebe reached out to give Will's hand a reassuring pat. "I get it." She was struggling with the reality of their arrangement, but it was probably much harder to fathom with parents who'd fallen in love against all odds. "It's not fucked up to want that kind of love. I do too. It's a hard thing to wrap your head around, but I'm going through it with you, y'know? I'm just as confused and unsure."
Davina didn't know what the hell she was doing. She was never good when it came to liking someone; in fact, other than one other guy when she was sixteen, she never really liked any guys. She was way out of her comfort zone. She realized he had stopped talking and cleared her throat. "I guess your job is really never over, right? Do you get any days off?" Oh, my gosh, Davina. "It seems like you would be exhausted otherwise. Since I know you also run when you have a chance. Not that I'm keeping tabs on you or anything, I just remember that day... --Anyway, yes, I'm having a good time. A very good time." She smiled and looked away, feeling her cheeks brighten.
Ian let out a laugh. "Ah, now I get it. Pretty cool costume. What about me, do you like my costume? I'm Westley from The Princess Bride." He gestured to his costume, pleased with himself and the costume he'd decided on. Rolling his eyes, Ian started to interrupt and deny, deny, deny again, but when he heard about Phoebe not fighting Tristan-- he stopped, looking at his sister, than over at Phoebe, and back at Tristan again. "What do you mean, she didn't fight you as much as I'm fighting you?" He looked over at the betrothed again, his heart pounding so hard he was starting to hear it in his ears. "Who's Will in love with? How do you even find this crap out?"
Leila chuckled, looking the blonde's costume over. "You look beautiful though, I wish I had come with something a little nicer. I just threw on a pair of ears and a mask, pretty much." Shaking her head, she took Amber's hand. "Nope, we haven't met. I'm Leila Buchanan, it's lovely to meet you, Amber. I'm actually going to be working for the Conroy's as well. Dr. Burke just hired me to join his practice.
Tris took in his costume. "Inconceivable! I like it. I can't give you crap about your costume, since I love that movie." Tristan placed her arms across her chest, pleased with how her little "slip-up" worked. What would these idiots do without her putting little bugs in their ears? "What do you care about what us gals chatted about? There's nothing going on. --Oh my good gravy. How am I the only one that knows anything that's going on? He's in love with Amber, you bonehead. They've been in love for like ever. And I thought I was bad at relationships."
Amanda let out a laugh as he impersonated a pirate. "And what is your name, Pirate? What's a scallywag like you doing at a party like this?" she asked him, playing along. "Thank you-- they're a bit heavy, but I do love how they look." She glanced around, before turning back to him, looking up at the prince. "Would you like to go outside, get some fresh air?"
Amber smiled. "Thank you. I just threw this on as well. I hadn't planned on coming, so I was in my pajamas. It's actually a little tight around my stomach; I probably should've gone with something else, but it's so pretty and the last time I wore it, it was fine. --It's lovely to meet you, too. Welcome to the family, I suppose. Dr. Burke is a lovely individual. I hope you enjoy it here, but I'm sure you will. The Conroy's are a great family."
Eli watched Davina as she rambled on, his lips turning up into a gentle smile. "I'm glad to hear that you're having a good time. And to answer your question: yes, I do get days off. I just like working. I actually wasn't supposed to work tonight, but I'm a bit of a workaholic." He took a sip of water, glancing around the party quickly, before turning back to her. "It sounds a little like you are keeping tabs on me, though. Which is alright. Because I've been keeping tabs on you, too," he murmured casually, taking another sip of water.
Miles grinned. "Shiver me timbers, you be a pirate ye self. I didn't actually give him a name, what do you think his name should be? --Yes, I would love that." He held out his arm for her, and smiled as he escorted her across the room. He was happy to have any time he could manage with her. Though he didn't know her very well, the more that he learned about her, the more he wanted to know.
Will shook his head. "It's a little fucked up, because now we're all expecting some big love story, and in reality, it might not happen." He gave her a sad smile. "I know you are. And I'm sorry I've been a bit.... absent, I guess. It's just hard to be around you, even though I should be doing the opposite and spending time with you to get to know you better."
Phoebe gave Will a sympathetic smile. "It is fucked up. Arranged marriages are archaic and the last thing I thought I'd find myself in." Selfishly, the brunette looked across the way, spotting Tristan talking to Ian. Her stomach dropped, thinking of the last conversation she'd had with her impending sister in law. "You don't have to apologize." If anything, Phoebe was understanding --sometimes too understanding for her own good. "It's kind of like when you're a kid and your parents tell you to do something; it suddenly becomes the last thing you want to do instead."
Davina felt her eyes widened to the size of saucers and she stared at him. "Oh, so you're that bush that keeps following me around. It all makes sense now. I always felt like someone was watching me. --I feel sorry for you, as that must be incredibly boring. I am definitely not the most interesting between me and Phoebe."
Ian "Finally, someone who get it. Someone asked me if I was a ninja. I almost commit murder tonight, Tris. We might have a body to bury by the end of the night." He stared at Tristan, realizing she'd tricked him into admitting he had a thing for his brother's fiance. The last thing he wanted was for anyone to find out, and now someone knew his secret, and he was sure Will would find out. "Tristan......." he stopped, shaking his head. "You're right, there's nothing going on." He watched Will and Phoebe, as she touched her brother's hand as they appeared to have a heart to heart, wishing that was him she was touching. "Amber? Lucas? Obviously I live under a rock because I don't know anything about this. I really don't pay attention to any of this, obviously."
Leila "Oh, really? Well, you look fantastic! You can't even tell it's tight or anything-- but is there anyway to loosen it up? So you don't end up passing out or anything." She smiled, silently thanking Amber for the welcome. "I appreciate that-- and they seem to be pretty great. I'm quite excited to start work on Monday. --What is it you do here at the castle?"
Tris laughed. "Yeah, I can't see you killing someone. You're right next to Miles on that list. The two most innocent Conroy's. I could see Sarah doing it before you." Tristan grinned so big that it only made her costume even more creepy. "I guess you wouldn't care that she told me how she has a crush on someone. I think it's me and she just didn't want to admit it because we were the ones talking. I mean, c'mon," she held out her arms and looked down her own body. "C'mon. I'm clearly the best of this family. I'll have to let her down easy, of course. Our love is forbidden. Taboo." She knocked her shoulder into Ian's. "But in all seriousness, if I would tell the person I like before it's too late. The ring in our world is a lot harder to get off once it's on." She watched him look at their brother and felt bad for him. Honestly, she felt bad for everyone. "Obviously. I guess I should tell you that Alaska is married now," she teased.
Amanda "That I be, but not as good a pirate as... ye?" she laughed, uncertain how to continue but amused with the conversation nonetheless. "Hmm, do how about Blue Eye Miles? Dreamy Blue Eye Miles. It might not be very threatening, but I personally think it's fitting." She was blushing again-- she found it hard not to around him. She took his arm, letting him whisk her away from the party, grateful to get some fresh air. "It looks like it might rain, but I don't mind-- do you?"
Will nodded in agreement with his betrothed. "They are. I didn't want to get engaged, but when you're told you have to marry an heiress, you do that." Will felt bad for the both of them, for the situation they were in-- they were both being forced to do something neither of them wanted-- at least, not with each other. He looked around, finding catching sight of Amber-- even in a mask, he'd know her anywhere. "Yeah, exactly. It makes you want to do the opposite. Like, being told to marry you makes me want to.... not do that," he admitted. "But I don't think we have a choice."
Eli "Yup, that would be me. I was hoping you wouldn't notice. I'm very bad at being a bush, apparently." He grinned cheekily, shaking his head. "On the contrary, I find you extremely interesting. I don't really notice Phoebe. No offense to her. But I've become quite taken with you. I hope that's alright. I know we don't know each other extremely well, but it's the truth."
Phoebe let out a small laugh at Will's bluntness. Luckily, they were both on the same page. Wedding planning would be a distraction, although she wasn't so inclined to think about it being her wedding. "I like to think there's always a choice. --I don't think it would hurt us to at least try, but it's not fair to force anything for the sake of fulfilling a duty. If your parents could fall in love all on their own regardless of social standing, they should extend the same courtesy to you."
Ian "Aren't most serial killers the most unassuming? I could be a killer. Doesn't mean I am, but I could. I am far from innocent. I am bad.... to the bone. Super bad." He snorted. "Sarah would definitely commit murder before either of us, for sure." Ian slapped his hand over his heart, letting out a loud breath. "Tristan. You're killing me here. She has a crush on someone? Who's not Will? --Okay, you're hilarious. Hilarious." He rolled his eyes, shaking his head at his sister. "I hate you. I love you, but I hate you. I'm not telling anyone anything. I can't. Even if she does have a thing for-- for me..... I could never do that. She's engaged to Will. Even if she doesn't love him.... I couldn't do that to him." He let out a soft laugh. "Ah, so that's why some weird guy has been hanging around her."
Will "They want that for us, of course, but it's a little more complicated. When my dad ascended the throne, it was a different time, less danger. No need for alliances and all the politics that came with the royal title. It's a bit different now. And it's not entirely up to my parents, either, they have advisors, and even if they want us to be happy, we all have to think of the crown, and the country." He shrugged. "So maybe we do have a choice, but what's the right choice?"
Phoebe "That's fair. Although, just to play Devil's Advocate, I'm curious as to what alliance they're seeking by marrying you off to an heiress. My father knows people, but he doesn't hold any power." Phoebe reached up to tuck a stray curl back into her meticulous hairstyle. "If we chose to do right by the country, we make the best of our situation and continue with a smile. If we chose to do right by ourselves, we follow our hearts.
Amber “I don’t think I’m going to pass out or anything, it just doesn’t fit as nicely as it did the last time I wore it.” Although she was not facing him, she had that sensation that someone was watching her. She ignored the feeling, not wanting to know who it was, even though she was sure she knew already. Instead, she turned her attention to Leila even more. “Oh - I am the nanny for Miss Zoey. She is the...” she paused, almost catching herself say ‘grandchild’. “She’s a the niece to the Queen. Her mother died and the Queen couldn’t let anything happen to her, so she has taken her on as though she was like her own.”
Miles was very happy to escape from the party. It wasn’t his kind of scene except when he had to. As Amanda began giving his costume names, he felt his cheeks heat up. Curse the Conroy gene! “Well, thank you. I am definitely not threatening, so it fits.” He looked up at the sky when she mentioned rain and crinkled his nose. “No, I don’t mind. I won’t melt if I get a little wet.” He fell silent for a moment before clearing his throat. “I was wondering, and please feel free to say no if you don’t want to, but I was hoping maybe I could take you on a date one day soon.”
Davina smiled at him, though she was extremely nervous still. “Maybe I’m just very observant or hopeful.” She shrugged, glad she was already wearing some blush on her cheeks so it wasn’t as noticeable when she blushed. She wasn’t sure what to think about his declaration, except giddy. “That’s quite alright with me, as I feel the same towards you.” She didn’t know where her sudden bravery came from, but she was happy it did. “And we should change the whole ‘not knowing each other well’ part.”
Tris laughed. “Oh, yes, you’re sooo bad.” She rolled her eyes and shook her head in annoyance. “Look, I’m done now. I told you more than I should have because I want all of you happy and if you don’t want to do anything, fine. I really do hope you guys have just crushes and nothing more, because once that ring is on her finger, you’ll have to see her with him all the time. Hugging, kissing, popping out some babies. And if you have deeper feelings, then that’s going to be hell for you. I don’t want you to feel regret and a longing for the rest of your life, any of you. So I pray it’s just a crush.” She let out a sigh and patted him on the shoulder. She began to say something else when she heard a glass shattering scream that came from behind the closed doors of the ballroom. “What the fuck was that?”
Leila smiled in quiet relief. "Good. I mean, good you're not going to pass out on me, not good that it doesn't fit. But really, you can't even tell." She lifted her mask over her forehead, her cheeks flushed a bit from having her face covered. "Hell, this thing is a lot more uncomfortable than I thought it'd be.... Oh, Zoey, I've heard about her from Dr. Burke. A very lively child, he mentioned. It's great they took her in-- they seem like really caring people. I feel lucky to be here." She reached out as a waiter passed, taking a water from a tray, and quickly downing it.
Amanda watched Miles, noting the way his cheeks flushed, and was grateful she wasn't the only one who's emotions showed on their face. "I think so too. You must be a very kind pirate." Amanda leaned against the balcony, turning to face him, suddenly speechless, caught off guard from his question. Not because she didn't want to go on a date with him, but because she very much did want to and had not been expecting him to ask. She'd been hoping he would, of course. But it was a surprise, nonetheless. "No, no-- I mean, yes. I would very much like to go on a date with you. I want to."
Will chuckled. "I'm pretty far down the line to the throne, so I don't think it really matters as much. You're wealthy enough to matter, despite not holding a title. Sometimes that's even better than power, to these people." He shrugged, offering a small smile. "What do you want to do, Phoebe?"
Eli's smile widened as he watched Davina, his heart beating rapidly despite appearing cool, calm, and collected. "You do? I'm very pleased to hear that. I was worried it might be one-sided. And I would very much like that. To change that, I mean. To get to know you better." He glanced around out of habit, before settling back at Davina in her devil costume. "After the party, would you like to go somewhere? We can leave the castle, or-- take a walk, or something."
Ian "That's the thing, Tris. It's already been hell for me, and I don't think I've seen them do any of those things, yet. I don't know if it's just a crush. What if it is, though? What if I break them up, and it just turns out to be a crush? Something we're just feeling because it's not okay, because we can't have each other, and then we act on it, and it turns out it was nothing? I would've broken them up for nothing. I don't know if I could risk that. And I don't know if I could do that to mom and dad, and definitely not to Will." Ian sighed heavily, confused and conflicted as he thought about the situation, and what they were supposed to do. He was noble, and wanted to do the right thing, and stealing away his brother's fiance, didn't seem like the right thing. His thoughts were interrupted by Tristan's outburst, and he realized he heard the screaming too, and turned to see Emily Donahue rush in, covered in blood, screaming before collapsing in the middle of the party.
Emily had to go to the bathroom and disappeared from the party, when she was washing her hands, she heard a lot of commotion from the other side of the door. She finished washing her hands and began walking to the door. As she approached, something fell against the door. She jumped back, barely missing being smacked in the face with the door and had a body fall on her. The older woman had been shot in the chest and was bleeding everywhere. Emily let out a scream and frantically moved out from under the woman. She ran as fast as she could down the hall, her feet sliding out from under her and causing her to fall on her hands. Quickly, she caught herself and launched herself at the door, yanking it open and appearing back in the ballroom. Her beautiful white dress was stained with the woman’s blood. “Th-There’s a lady. Sh-She d-died.” Although she hadn’t been harmed herself, Emily collapsed on the floor, passing out from what she had witnessed.
Phoebe felt conflicted. The majority of her wanted to follow her heart. However, she wasn't exactly all too sure if what she felt was remotely reciprocated by the other party. It was too much of a risk, and though she was okay with failing, the consequences and fall out would be incredibly great. "I--" Her decision was cut short by a blood curdling scream, followed by a small blonde covered in what Phoebe hoped was merely fake blood as part of a Halloween prank.
Amber started to reply to Leila when suddenly Emily collapsed near them. “What the heck?” Davina nodded, excitedly at his proposal and as she began to reply, she was cut off by the sound of a scream. Miles was grinning ear-to-ear and felt like he was on cloud nine, but before he could respond, he heard a loud commotion coming from inside. “Can you excuse me for a second? I want to finish this conversation, but it sounds like something happened. Stay right here.” He quickly ran back in, shocked by what he saw. Tris understood why her brother was having issues, but she knew it was more than just a crush even if they didn’t. Before she could reply, she saw the youngest Donahue fall down and quickly ran to her side.
Izzy heard all of the commotion and quickly made her way through the crowd. When she spotted Emily on the ground, she turned around to face the crowd. “Everyone, please remain calm. We will get to the bottom of this.” She made her way out of the room and quickly spotted the body of the woman Emily was speaking about. When she looked down the hall, she saw a person dressed in all black walking hastily towards her. She made her way back to the ballroom and shut the door, alerting the guards at the door to barricade the door. “Please remain calm, but try to stay away from any of the windows and doors until we have this all resolved!”
Will was going to ask Phoebe again, urge her to make a decision, when he heard the scream, and saw Emily run into the ballroom, covered in blood. His own blood drained from his face, as he looked around in shock, wondering if this was some elaborate joke, meant to be a prank. But as Emily collapsed, something told him it was not. And his mother rushing back into the ballroom confirmed it. He took Phoebe's hand and began tugging her away from the crowd-- but stopped when he caught sight of Amber not too far from where Emily had collapsed. "Phoebe, I need you to find somewhere to hide, okay? I'll be back." He didn't wait for a response, he pulled away and made his way to Amber, trying to push his way through everyone. Eli saw as his sister collapsed, and wanted to rush over to her, but he also wanted to protect Davina. He also had a duty to protect his king and queen. He pushed Davina into a corner. "Wait here, okay?" Ian watched as Tristan ran off to check on Emily, his love troubles far from his mind now-- he went to his mother's side, looking around. "Mom, where's Dad? You have to get out of here." He glanced around the room, watching as Will left Phoebe, and saw Miles come into the room from outside on the balcony. He didn't see Alaska, but she was probably off with Charles somewhere, and Sarah-- where had he seen Sarah last? When had he last seen his dad? "Mom????"
Amanda waited for Miles to reply, her stomach aflutter as she nervously looked up at him, wanting to cross the short distance between them and touch him. And she almost did, but was interrupted by a ruckus from inside the ballroom. Brows furrowing, she glanced back to Miles, nodding as he excused himself. She waited a moment, before deciding to go after him, entering the ballroom-- her mouth immediately dropping, her eyes widening as she saw what was going on. Leila looked over her shoulder as Emily collapsed, gasping in shock before immediately falling to her knees beside her and checking her vitals. "--She's breathing, she's alive-- I don't think this is her blood, Amber." She looked up, at the chaos around her, her heart beating so hard, she was sure she was going to keel over next. "What's going on?!"
Phoebe felt panic begin to rise in the center of her chest. Whatever was going on, it wasn't some practical joke in time for Halloween. Her breathing grew staggered as Will tugged her away from the scene to get her towards safety. "I... Yeah. Okay." The brunette's eyes frantically searched the space, attempting to seek out Ian, Amanda... Davina. Where was Davina? Luckily, she spotted her younger sister huddled in a corner. Gathering the elaborate skirts of her costume she rushed over to her younger sister and wrapped her up in her arms. "Thank god you're safe."
James was dancing with his granddaughter Zoey, or his niece, as most people knew her. His wife was off being the life of the party-- his blue eyes found her over and over again, smiling as he watched the love of his wife entertain their guests and spend time with their children. It was a wonderful night-- and he couldn't wait for it to end so he'd be alone again with his wife, and they could go off and have another honeymoon the next morning. "I can barely keep up with you, sweetheart," he told Zoey, chuckling as his granddaughter squealed as he twirled her around. He twirled her around again, and again, pausing when the doors of the ballroom swung open and his adopted daughter, Emily came in screaming, covered in blood. He glanced around, confused, watching as she collapsed. Izzy went out the door, then promptly came back in, and he watched her signal the guards frantically. "My love, find Miss Amber, and don't leave her side, understand?" he murmured softly as he kneeled at Zoey's height, watching her nod with wide eyes. "Go on, it'll be fine."
Amber nodded in agreement. “I don’t think it is, either. I have to find Zoey!” Amber began looking around frantically, trying to find the little girl in the middle of the crowd. If the people had actually listened to the Queen, then she would be able to find her. She spotted Will and pushed through to him. “Have you seen Zoey?! I can’t find her!” Davina nodded, her head still reeling as Eli pushed her in a corner. She didn’t know what to do, but she was afraid to move. She was so relieved when Phoebe found her; she buried her face into her sister’s shoulder and began crying. “What’s going on? Are we going to die here tonight?” Izzy “He was dancing with Zoey the last time I saw him, Ian. You have to go. I don’t know what’s going on, but I saw somebody out there, they killed someone. You have to make sure everyone is safe. Get them out of here. I’m not leaving until I know everyone is okay.” Quickly, she hugged her son, cradling his face in her hands. “You have to go, now,” she demanded.
Tris glanced up when she heard someone talking about the blood not being Emily’s. “No, and she wouldn’t do some kind of prank. My only guess is we’re under attack right now. We need to get her moved. Help me carry her?” She asked the woman before her. Miles spotted his dad and ran to his side. “Dad, what’s going on? Is someone really dead? We need to get you out of here!”
Will reached Amber, grateful to see she was okay-- he wanted to pull her into his arms and hold her and never let anyone or anything get to her-- but he'd have to wait until later. "I saw her with my dad a minute ago-- there she is!" He waved his niece over, grasping her hand. "Hey, Zoe-bug, we're going to play hide and seek, okay? You have to find the best hiding place with Amber, close your eyes, and don't come out until I find you, okay?" Elijah, as soon as Davina was out of the way, lined up with the other guards at the door of the ballroom, gun pointed, ready to protect everyone from whoever was outside the door. Ian stared at his mom, not quite registering what she was saying. "W-What?" He wrapped his arms around her, eyes clenching shut as he tightened his arms around her. "Mom, I am not leaving you." James, as soon as he saw Zoey had made it to Amber, was trying to get to his wife in the midst of all the chaos-- he could see her and Ian together, but he somehow kept getting further away, as if he was floating in the ocean, further and further away from land. His eyes wild with confusion, he saw his son Miles. "Son, we need to help everyone get out-- I need to get to your mother-- it's madness right now--"
Leila nodded, not recognizing that she was speaking to one of the princesses. "Yes, otherwise she might get trampled, and get really hurt," she replied. "You grab her legs, I'll take her arms-- carefully, we don't know if it's something internal, we could do more damage," she ordered. Amanda didn't understand what was happening-- but she saw Davina and Phoebe, and immediately started going towards them, and by some miracle, got to them. "What the hell's going on?!" She was usually calm and quiet, but the panic had immediately set in and she was scared.
Phoebe clung to her sister, stroking the back of her head as she began to cry. "I have no idea what's happening. But we sure as hell aren't going to die here tonight." Though she was visibly shaken, the brunette easily slipped into her role of older sister. She had to be strong for Davina, for their family, and ensure that the both of them got out of the ballroom in one piece. "We're going to find a way out."
Amber was so relieved when she saw Zoey. She sighed in relief and grabbed her hand, holding as tight as she could without hurting her. “Let’s find the best hiding spot!” She was trying so hard to keep her fear hidden and how scared she was to leave Will, but right now Zoey was her top priority. Before leaving, she hugged Will tight. “Please be careful. I love you.” She whispered before pulling out of the hug and runnning off with Zoey. Izzy looked at her son. “Ian, that is not a request. I’m telling you to make sure your siblings are okay. Get them out of here.” She didn’t want anything to happen to any of her babies, but she also had to do what she could to make sure everyone else would get out of there alive. “Do not worry about me, Ian. Just do what I tell you and get everyone to safety. I’ll be okay. I promise.” Miles didn’t know what was going on but he nodded. “Okay. I’ll take some people around the back. Mom’s up at the front.” He grabbed his dad’s hand and pulled him through the crowd until he could see a clearing near his mom. “Ian, I’m going to get some people out around the back.” Tris nodded and carefully picked up Emily’s legs. “Get out of our way, assholes!” She shouted when people were scrambling around them, not caring about keeping up a good representation. “You lead.” Davina nodded at her sister’s words, praying that she was right. She hated how she was crying as though that was going to help anything. When she saw Amanda, she quickly held out her free arm and hugged both of them so tight, not saying a word, just grateful they were both okay. She felt herself jump and squeal when she heard what sounded like a gunshot. “We need to get out of here, NOW.”
Phoebe almost immediately grabbed onto Amanda, holding both her and Davina tight. They were her family --and she was going to do whatever it took to protect them. The sound of a gun shot made her whole body jolt, her head perking up ever so slightly to try and see what was going on. Chaos seemed to be unfolding around them, so much so that her vision was blurry. Rather than dwell and worry, she took the initiative to try and get them to a safer spot. "Follow me." She squeezed both of them tight once more, then linked their arms in an attempt to navigate them towards a somewhat hidden door to get outside of the palace.
Will held Amber close, taking in the smell of her, the feel of her-- not knowing if it would be the last time. He nearly broke down then, but quickly hid any sign of emotion from his face as he pulled away. "I love you too, Bambi. And I love you, Zoey. I'll start counting, okay?" He watched as the pair went, and turned back to the madness around him, unsure of what to do. He had to find his family, first. Ian shook his head. "I can't leave you on your own. What kind of son would I be if I did?" He turned to see his brother, Miles, and sighed in relief to see their father was close behind. "Okay-- I'll stay with here with Mom and Dad-- have you seen Sarah?" James immediately went to Izzy, grasping her hand in his own, smiling despite the tears in his eyes. "I'm sorry it took so long to get to you, love. Our granddaughter is quite the dancer," he murmured with a sad smile. "Ian, Miles-- protect your sisters and help our guests-- I'll stay with your mother, we'll be fine."
Leila lifted Emily's limp body, grimacing from the weight-- she was a tiny thing, but Leila wasn't the strongest, either. But somehow, she managed, with Tristan's help. She led Tristan over to one side of the room, somehow holding up Emily's body with all the strength she had with one arm around the blonde, while she cleared a table off, glasses and food crashing to the ground around her feet-- but she didn't have time to think about that right now. "Here-- I can examine her better here--" She set Emily's head down immediately checked her pulse again, then her pupils, and surveyed her body for a source for blood, but as she had said earlier, the blood wasn't hers. "She's fine, she must've passed out from the fright she had." Amanda buried her face against Davina's shoulder as she grasped both sisters in her arms, grateful that they were okay. When she heard the gunshot, she yelped, clenching her eyes shut, not wanting to see who had been hurt-- she didn't think she could bear it. "I don't want to die," she mumbled tearfully, barely registering as she got up and began to follow her friends to an escape-- but she stopped, refusing to move another inch. "I can't-- Miles-- what if he's hurt???" she shook her head, pulling away from them. "Go on, I'll be right there, okay??" She turned around and ran right back into the chaos.
Davina nodded as her sister took charge. She followed behind, trying her best to keep from getting disconnected due to the people moving frantically around them. She saw the door her sister was heading for and felt a bit of relief. Maybe things would be okay after all. When Amanda pulled away from them, she tried to grab her. "Amanda, you can't!" She reached to take her hand, but Amanda was already out of reach. "No!" Izzy "Ian, you have to listen to me. I will not let anything happen to you. I won't let you be hurt in any way and the only way for me to do that is to get you out of here. We will be fine." She smiled sadly at James, wrapping her arm around his waist once he was in her grasp. Her eyes flickered back to Miles and Ian. "I love you both, so much. Please, go before anything happens. Make sure you find everyone. We'll find you as soon as we can." Although she said the words, she, herself did not believe them. She felt as though this was going to be the last time she saw them, but she would happily die in the place of them. She put one hand on each of their cheeks. "I'm not telling you again. Go." She gave Miles a warning look and he nodded, pulling Ian along with him. Once she saw them disappear, she looked back at James and hugged him tight. Miles pulled Ian away from their parents, hating to do it but knowing they had to do what they were told. "I haven't seen Sarah or Alaska." As they walked through the crowd, he saw Will and pulled Ian to him. "We have to find Sarah and Alaska, and make sure they're safe and out of here. He looked around and saw Tristan. "Tristan is over there with Emily. One of you needs to go over there and see if they need help." Tris carefully set Emily down and watched as Leila examined her. She felt a little relief when she said nothing was wrong, that she was just passed out. At least nobody else had died... yet. "Okay, anything I can do for her?"
Amanda looked around, trying to see Miles-- and she caught sight of him with his brother Ian, and their parents, the King and Queen. She was relieved to see they were all okay, but she was especially relieved that the prince wasn't hurt. She started to go to him, to tell him that Davina and Phoebe had found a way out, but before she could call out his name, she felt someone grab her from behind, holding her around her waist with one arm as they covered her mouth. She began fighting against whoever was holding her, feeling them drag her away from the party, further away from Miles and his family. She clawed at her abductor's hands, punched and kicked, all the while yelling at the top of her lungs despite them covering any sound she was making. And then, everything went black. Ian listened to his mother, watching her with wide, scared eyes-- because somehow, he knew they wouldn't be fine. "Mom...." He managed to gasp out, holding onto her hand as she caressed his cheek. He looked from her, to his dad, who was smiling at his sons through tear-filled eyes. Ian steeled himself, taking a deep breath, and willed himself to be strong, for his parents, and for his siblings. "Okay. Okay. We're going." He started to follow Miles, who was pulling him away from their parents. "I love you, Mom. And I love you, Dad. Everything is going to be fine. Stay safe." He forced a smile as the tears fell, taking a deep breath as he turned away from them. "I don't think I've seen Alaska in hours-- she must be with Charles." Will sighed in relief when he saw his brothers, throwing his arms around them and hugging them tight. "Amber has Zoey, they're hiding-- I'll go help Tris," he mumbled, pulling away from his siblings. "You guys look for Alaska and Sarah. Last I saw Alaska, she and Charles were heading outside-- maybe they went upstairs?" He left Ian and Miles to go his twin's side, seeing that she and a woman he didn't know were looking after Emily. "We need to get her out of her-- her brother's will freak if anything happens to her." Leila shook her head at Tristan, wiping off some blood she'd gotten on her hands. "If you have some smelling salts on you, that would help, but there's not much else-- unless you can grab something to cover her with, in case she goes into shock." She glanced up as a male approached them. "You could probably carry her out without dropping her, if you know a way out."
Phoebe's feet felt as if they were flying as she attempted to move herself, Davina and Amanda closer towards safety. Her hazel eyes, wet with tears of fright, held a laser focus on the door that was just close enough, but each step felt like it was taking a year. "Amanda, we can't... You can't... Amanda!" Her fearful words hissed out as a tear dripped down her cheek. Her friend was too far gone both she and Davina were too close to safety. "Dav, you go. I'm going to go get her." She gave her sister a nudge to keep going. "I'll be right there."
Miles looked around, trying to spot one of his sisters, but instead spotted another brunette being attacked. "Amanda," he screamed as he tried to push his way to her. Even as they pulled her away, he fought to get to her. "Amanda!" He ran to where he had seen her but she was gone. He stopped and looked around, frantic as he tried to find her. Calling her name but not finding her. Davina stared at her sister, had it been a normal situation she would've laughed at the idea. "Phoebe, I'm not going anywhere without you and Amanda." She took hold of her sister and clung to her, but refused to stay behind. Tris looked at her brother. "You carry her. I'll clear the way." She began shoving her way through the room, making a path for them. Until the room went black. Someone had shut off the power and more gunshots began. The only light was from the bullets leaving the barrels for a quick second. Tristan let out a groan, feeling pain in her back, making her fall to the ground. Izzy held tight to James' arm when the lights went out. She wasn't fearful for what was going to happen to her, but her kids. She began silently crying. Then the moment she knew was coming happened. She felt a something against the back of her head and took a deep breath. There was a moment of pain followed by nothing. When the lights came back on, only a few minutes after they were cut, Izzy was laying on the ground in a puddle of her own blood.
Will gathered Emily up in his arms, charging after Tristan as she cleared a path for them-- but then the lights went out and they were clothed in darkness-- he stumbled, holding onto the unconscious young woman in his arms as he tried to find an exit. He heard his twin sister groan out in pain, and immediately began to yell for her. "TRISTAN!!!" he called out to her, but unable to see or hear her. The sound of gunshots filled the room, one hitting Will in the shoulder-- he gasped in pain, but forced himself to stay standing, to not drop Emily. "I'm gonna get you out of here, Em," he groaned out, promising her even though she couldn't hear him. James held onto his wife, struggling to see in the dark-- all he could see were the sparks from the gunshots, while the room was abuzz with screams. He could feel his wife began to shake as she silently cried, and he held on tighter to her, kissing her forehead. "I love you, Izzy," he murmured softly, feeling the force of someone hitting her from behind. He cried out, falling with his wife as she fell, holding onto her body as he felt her weaken. "Izzy," he cried softly, blindly reaching for her face in the dark, gently caressing her face. "What have they done?" he murmured, his heart breaking. But at least his attackers were kind enough to put him out of his misery; he felt the gun they held against his back, and the bullet that ripped through his heart, or what was left of it. He fell, holding his wife in his arms, struggling to breath. They were still covered in darkness, but he smiled as he looked up to see Izzy holding her hand out to him. "I couldn't let even death come between us, my love." he managed to murmur. He took her hand, his eyes closing as his body went limp beside his wife.
Phoebe Just as she took a step in the direction of Amanda, they room went black. She held onto Davina for dear life, pulling them both to the ground the moment she heard gun shots. The brunette did her best not to scream, although her throat grew tight and her eyes welled up with tears. "Love you, Dav," she murmured, hoping that in the darkness nobody could detect them. When the lights flickered back on, she felt frozen and unable to move, despite being close to their exit route. "We've got to... But Amanda..."
Tris was unable to move, even when the lights came back on. She tried, but her legs wouldn't cooperate. She began gnawing on her lip to keep from screaming out loud and despite her best attempt, tears rolled down her cheek. She finally couldn't help it any longer and yelped once more. Davina hugged her sister when she was finally able to see her, so thankful to still have her. "We'll find her." She sounded the most confident saying those few words than she had the entire night. "I promise, Phoebe. We'll find her."

get to know me, pick some numbers.
since i wanted @kai-aaah to answer all of them i’m doing them too!!! so have fun reading about me! this is a lot ok and i’m sorry for not using big I’s and stuff i’m lazy i know how to spell i promise !!! enjoy 💞💖
1. selfie
you got 2 bc i love myself and the first is before i dyed my hair pink and i looked soft in it!!! the second is me casually
2. what would you name your future kids? I honestly have no idea, I’ve always sucked at names and when writing short stories i have to look up like “top 1000 american names” and stuff like that. but i really want to name my future puppies nini, rice ball and macklemore :((
3. do you miss anyone? several actually, old friends from middle school I lost contact with, a girl in my class but she’s not a really good person so I’m better without her but I still liked being around her. Then there’s my grandma who’s been gone for a few years now and a friend that took his life this spring.
4. what are you looking forward to? moving away from home and start my life for real. i don’t feel at home or like i’m really alive when i’m at home now and i just want to do my thing! find my own path and so on!
5. is there anyone who can always make you smile? kim jongin :((( when he smiles i smile omg my lil sunshine child i love him
6. is it hard for you to get over someone? i think yeah? bc i often overthink stuff i tend to miss old times and i still am getting over the fact i lost some really great friends along the way.
7. what was your life like last year?
i got close to nico, a girl in my class and it was nice because we clicked so well together as friends and she felt secure and i liked that. i liked to have someone that had the same hobbies and look in life. but she got a bf and honestly just stopped talking to me and it’d take weeks for her to reply and she stopped going to school, leaving me by myself and i hated being alone. so i broke things off with her. i was in a relationship at the time but i was falling out of love but i was so scared of hurting her bc i still liked her, cared for her and i just wanted the best for her and i was not it. and it was not fair to lead her on so i had to break up with her even if i hated it. we’re friends still though so i’m glad.
8. have you ever cried because you were so annoyed? all the time! I cry when I get overwhelmed with any emotion, I cry a lot in general.
9. who did you last see in person? my mom!
10. are you good at hiding your feelings? too good, I don’t think anyone really knows or has ever known how I feel. I’m also a skilled lier thanks to my parents.
11. are you listening to music right now? yeah i always am tbh my mom complains about it
12. what is something you want right now? summer and money
13. how do you feel right now? really stressed, i have a lot of school work to do before they set grades on all of us and i was sick for a week and now i have shot ton of presentations to do and work with i’m not ready.
14. when was the last time someone of the opposite sex hugged you? a month ago???? after meeting up with a guy i hooked up with for a coffee
15. personality description stereotypical aqua without all the drugs i’m a child of god!!!!!!(not at all really) I am the mom friend™, I am a soft little bun and I get scared by literally everything. petty is my middle name and i breathe drama. i want to say i’m pure but with the things i’ve done i’m not allowed into heaven. since my family don’t have that much money i always make sure that i can save as much as possible and i get annoyed when people throw around money and assume i can just do things and ask for money. i like girls and boys(but i still don’t know what’s sexuality i just like soft pretty ppl), like i usually say there’s just too much love in my lil heart!!!! i cry at least twice a week and I wear too big sweaters and shorts that show off half my butt and running shoes. also a lot of caps and chokers.
16. have you ever wanted to tell someone something but you didn’t?
a lot of times because of how i was raised and in the environment i was raised in i have troubles speaking about things like that and i bottle up a lot. a lot of things involve my dad or my mom but i’m scared of hurting my mom.
17. opinion on insecurities. i think my insecurities are affects from my past with anorexia and just society portraying a certain kind of look as an ideal that I can’t reach. like i’m constantly worried about how my body looks and some periods i’m full of confidence and love everything about me and some i consider fixing most things with surgery. i’m also bad at expressing emotions and i blame it on being an aqua!!!! i don’t talk much and i don’t like to voice my feelings. it results in a lot of relationships being a little rocky and it makes me insecure about myself.
18. do you miss how things were a year ago? yes and no. it was good then but so much happened during the summer and autumn that was really messy so no.
19. have you ever been to New York? no and idk if i want to go either really. i don’t see the appeal.
20. what is your favourite song at the moment? 365 so fresh by tripple H
21. age and birthday? 18 ; february 6th
22. description of crush. i don’t have a crush??? i crush on everyone that show me the slightest little spec of affection honestly
23. fear(s) never leaving sweden and ending up living here with my husband, a dog and two kids in a villa somewhere in the outskirts of stockholm and going to the alps to ski and to thailand in the winter (literally what all middle class standard™ swedish families do). other than that i’m scared of ghosts and demons and there’s a specific picture that i get a panic attack from just looking at for a second. i hate loud noises and im scared of zombies, war, death, men, the dark, deep oceans, heights and so on. i have a lot of anxiety over death!!
24. height
5′2 when i put it in the cm to feet translation thing (160cm)
25. role model CL; she is a really strong and successful woman that I’ve looked up to since years back! I wrote a speech about her in english class when we were supposed to write about an artist we liked and I got an A on it so I hope she’s proud of me for that and for being myself and following my dreams!
26. idol(s) exo ofc!! they together with f(x), 2ne1 and red velvet mean a lot to me and i love them hella !!
27. things i hate men, obviously all things bad that are wrong with our society like dictatorship/war/racism/sexism/homophobia but i don’t feel like listing it all up, my dad, cold and snow/ice, not knowing what’s going on in a situation or while planning something, being taken for granted, loud noises, avocado, being sick bc i can’t do yoga or go out on walks, spiders, my school mates and being stressed all the time.
28. i’ll love you if… you buy me fried chicken, you take me o watch the stars by the beach, you back hug me, you talk about astrology with me, you cuddle me!!!, you love me back, you love kim junmyeon, you play with my hair, you tell me about little things that remind me of you and if you take pictures of me spontaneously.
29. favourite film(s) devil wears prada, somewhere only we know, jurassic park(all of them), mean girls???
30. favourite tv show(s) gumball, steven universe, how i met your mother, fresh of the boat aaaand a swedish humour show called solsidan.
31. 3 random facts when i was 8 or 9 i tried to become a mermaid by cutting of some hair skin and a nail, put it in a lil bowl with water and my own blood!!! then put it out under the full moon.
i love cooking and baking and it makes me happy to be in the kitchen and try out new foods from other countries and throw things together that we have at home!
when i was in 6th grade and was out playing with my class (we invented our own game of tag and it was like the hunger games im telling you!! i still love it) and the snow was starting to melt as well. so by my school there was this little mountain/hill that was about 2-33m and not very steep plus there was snow on the ground underneath so me and my friend jumped down. but i got stuck with my foot in the snow and tripped, resulting in me scraping up my right knee rather badly and i have a scar there now.
32. are your friends mainly girls or guys? I’d say it’s pretty equal but i levitate more towards girls, I just feel more comfortable around girls.
33. something you want to learn mandarin, I am technically learning it right now but at some point in life it’d be really neat to be fluent! If that doesn’t count I want to learn more about physics.
34. most embarrassing moment I don’t really have one because I think over what I do a lot so i rarely end up in embarrassing moments. but once when i was getting a chai at espresso house (a coffee shop in sweden) the barista said “have a good day” and i said “no thank you” because i thought he was talking about the receipt.
35. favourite subject i reeeeally love history! but we don’t have that anymore so i’d say textile design 3!
36. 3 dreams you want to fulfill? becoming a fashion designer and show at paris fashion week
buy my mom a nice car and a house on gotland where she can be in the summer and have it just for herself (hopefully she’s left dad by now as well and is happy and can do whatever she wishes to do without him weighting her down!)
seeing the world, my motto is “why live in a world you haven’t seen” and i hope i can see as much of it as possible! i want to move away from sweden and who knows where i end up.
37. favourite actor/actress shit idk i don’t have one????
38. favourite comedian(s) they’re all swedish so idk if i should list them up since even if you look it up it’ll all be in swedish plus swedish humor.
39. favourite sport(s) i don’t like watching sports but i’ve been practicing a few since i was a kid! soccer(i was a great goalie but i quit after 2 years when a girl took my spot and i got mad about it), basketball(i was never that great at it and quit after a year), badminton(my fav sport!!!! i was really great and i could have gone far with it but my anxiety stopped me so i quit after 3 years???), jujitsu (i got a green belt and i loved it but again my anxiety got in the way and i quit) and lastly ballet!!( i love ballet and dancing but due to some back issues i can’t do ballet and it sucks). in conclusion badminton is my fav sport!
40. favourite memory oh I guess it gotta be from 9th grade when I was in a exchange program with my french class.
It was like a few days into my stay at her house in Auriol and my exchange student and I walked around in her neighborhood which was like mostly little houses, grape fields, mountains and long roads.
It was really beautiful just walking around and we talked about some deep stuff like politics and life while the sun was setting and I wore some shorts and a hoodie.
Also on the weekend when she her sister and mom took my down to the coast and took me sightseeing up on some mountains, small villages and then finished it off with 2-set lunch by the ocean!
in general my whole experience being and exchange student for that little week was amazing and france is absolutely beautiful and Angi whom I was staying with was really sweet!

42. favourite book(s) in order to live(yeonmi park) I don’t read a lot but this was the last thing i read and it’s really good and i think it’s a book everyone should read, it’s educational and can be a eye opener to what’s going on in the world.

“Jeon?”
Jungkook took a deep breath in his sleep, mouth shutting. His eyes were still firmly shut as his body slept, no indication that he was cold from the icy breeze crawling along the rooftop. Even pressed between the heater unit and his body, you were feeling the chill. You turned towards him, debating on whether or not to move closer to him.
He would dislike it, right?
You frowned to yourself, gaze lowering to his arms crossed over his chest and legs lying straight down. He wasn’t exactly inviting. At least with Yoongi, he’d sleep on his side, slightly curled; the perfect position for you to squeeze into when you had a nightmare. And whenever you had done so he’d only yawn, resting his head against yours. Jungkook was flat on his back, straight as a board. Tentatively, you slipped your hand into one of his, pulling it away from his chest to try to make room.
His fingers suddenly curled around yours, halting your movement. Eye snapping back up to his face, you saw that Jungkook was quietly staring at you, the sleep seemingly evaporating as he focused on your face. He looked angry, you observed. This was indeed a bad idea. “What are you doing?” He asked hoarsely, gaze dropping to your cold hands. You quickly pulled your hand away, nervously looking at it,
“I-I was..I was trying to lay beside you.” You mumbled. He narrowed his eyes in confusion,
“You already are.” He observed. Shaking your head, you rolled onto your back, pulling the blankets up higher. Jungkook lightly tapped your thigh under the blankets, “What were you really trying to do?” He sighed heavily at your silence, “What’s wrong now?”
“I’m sorry.”
“Sorry for what?”
“Waking you.” You murmured, “You looked angry when you woke up after I touched you so I’m sorry..I won’t do it again.” He shook his head, crossing his arms once more,
“It’s not you..You…You just can’t wake up thinking that whoever’s waking you only wants to hold your hand.” He explained, “I wasn’t angry that you were waking me up.” Jungkook shifted closer, rolling onto his side and kissing the tip of your shoulder, “Now what did you really want, Jagi?” He rolled his eyes when you shook your head, still refusing to tell him. “I’m awake now.” he complained softly, “At least say something.”
“Can you tell me about your family?” You suddenly whispered, shifting your attention to him. He seemed to know more about your family than you did. It would be nice to know a little more about his. Hovering over you, Jungkook’s face was a couple inches from yours, his teasing expression wiping to a blank stare the moment your question left your lips. He drew back a bit, shrugging.
“My mom died in a fire Jimin started.” He huffed, “I was 11…what more is there to talk about?”
“What was she like?” You tried, “How did your dad die?”
He sent you an odd look, shaking his head, “My dad’s not dead.” Your eyes widened,
“He’s not? Oh, I’m sorry, Jeon. I-I thought..I don’t know what I thought, you just never mentioned him…I thought he died.” Your face flushed in embarrassment and he only ran the pad of his thumb along your cheek, feeling the warm growing there. You brushed his hand aside, embarrassed that you had assumed something so outrageous. “Where is your dad? Do you talk to him? What does he do? Is he in the Mafia too?” He smiled at you, slowly shaking his head,
“No..” He chuckled, covering his mouth with his hand, “No, he’s not in the Mafia, Y/N. He’s..” Jungkook’s laughter quieted, “He’s the mayor.”
“The mayor!?” You exclaimed. Jungkook’s dad was the mayor? The mayor was a graying man and Jungkook was so young, how was that possible? How old was his mother? “Wh- Why are you in the Mafia, then? I don’t..did you two fight after your mother died or something?”
His expression sombered, “No..He was having an affair with my mom when she got pregnant with me..He gave her the side girl special. Apartment on the opposite side of town, paid rent, all that.” He scratched his head, “He didn’t want anyone to know that he was having an affair; none the less a woman 10 years younger than him.” Jungkook waved off your horrified expression, “It’s not that bad, I think…Tae’s dad was fifte-no, twenty. He was twenty years older than his mom.” His face saddened,
“She was 16. Tae said one day in grade school he came home and his dad was there; after being gone since he was born..and his mom was gone. He said he learned everything he knows from his dad, but I never know if he’s proud or ashamed of that…they never got along. A few years back he found his mom. She’s got a husband and kids; she’s a nurse….I don’t know what happened between her and Tae other than she has a restraining order on him now.”
You wrapped your arms around Jungkook, burying your face into his chest, “I’m sorry.” He laughed lightly, rubbing your shoulder.
“It’s not your fault.”
“Why..why didn’t your dad take you in when your mom died? Have you spoken to him since? Wait, does he even know about you?” That would explain why Jungkook was in the Mafia in the first place. Surely the mayor of the city. despite his apparent stain of an affair, would take in his own son? His entire campaign was family focused. There was no way he knew about Jungkook and did nothing.
“He knows.” He stated, “I see him at speeches sometimes when Namjoon hyung wants to sit in on them. He looks at me..that’s about it.” Rubbing his nose, Jungkook shifted his legs, flinching at your cold toes brushing along his shins, “He was there..after the fire department came..He said he couldn’t pick me up with so many people to witness so he told me to wait in an alley across the street..” His arms wrapped around you tightly,
“I waited for three days, then Namjoon forced me to go back to the warehouse. But even then, I went back to that alley the next to wait and he didn’t show, so I left a note telling him I’d wait there from noon to sunset everyday and if he couldn’t get there during that time, I’d be at the warehouse. He..he obviously never showed and I stopped waiting for him.” You felt his lips press against your temple, “I’ve got an older half brother though.” He murmured humorously,
“He’s a police officer. He’s got a wife and two boys; I’m an uncle, Y/N.” He chuckled,“..He arrested me once actually! His oldest son is close to my age…I saw him trying to buy drugs from someone, so I called the police..I stayed around to make sure he didn’t buy anything and ended up getting arrested. He arrested his own brother for looking out for his son! But he doesn’t know me, so I can’t blame him. My stepmom is a housewife, she likes throwing parties.”
“How do you know all this?”
“I used to keep tabs on them.” He admitted, “..They’re my family, I guess..not my real family; not like Namjoon and Tae and everyone else. Namjoon’s done more for me than my mayor dad ever has. And Tae’s more of a brother than Mr Police Captain.”
He kept track of them, you wondered sadly. You felt your eyes water. How could he casually talk about observing a family that he should have been a part of? He could’ve been an officer too. He could have finished highschool and went on to college and been perfectly happy if his father was half the man he should be. Jungkook might’ve been engaged by now with a steady job and a home and real friends. Why didn’t Jeon hate him? “When did you stop keeping track of them?”
“After I met you.”
He grinned at your surprised look, brushing away your tears. Jungkook kissed you quickly, arms drawing you in closer, “You’ve taken up a lot of my time.” He joked. He felt you shiver in his hold and he curled around you, “Do you want to meet them? There’s a speech tomorrow, I think. We can stand in the crowd..He always spots me.”
“No.”
“No?” He echoed in disbelief. “I want to though…I want him to see you…to see I’m happy.” You shook your head furiously,
“No.” You cried, angrily wiping at your eyes. Why was Jeon trying to show his father he was happy? Jungkook didn’t have to prove anything to that man. The mayor didn’t deserve to know anything of whether Jungkook was happy or not. He didn’t deserve a son like Jeon. “I don’t want to meet or see the man who abandoned you. I regret ever voting for him.” You frowned, holding him tighter, “I’m sorry, Jeon.”
He sighed pleasantly, dabbing at your eyes with the hem of the blanket. While your constant and consistent concern for him made him feel truly loved, he didn’t understand sometimes. He thought you wanted to know about his family? All that talk about his dad wasn’t sad at all compared to his mom, he figured. Jungkook didn’t know his dad.. Yeah, he knew of him, but that personal connection, like he had with his mom, wasn’t there. Talking about his dad was just talking; there was no feeling. There was no need for you to be so upset. There was especially no need for you to feel the need to apologize. “Why do you keep apologizing? What are you sorry for?”
“I’m sorry I can’t fix any of that..your mom, your dad, your nephew, this whole Mafia.” If anyone deserved a happy and carefree life, it was Jungkook. He deserved everything and it crushed your heart that you couldn’t give him any of that. You loved Jeon, but you couldn’t offer him one good thing. You were just you; and you were useless.
Pulling his head down to yours, you kissed him; surprising him with your sudden zeal. Jungkook sighed, quickly taking control. His hand cupped your jaw, holding you still as he tilted his head. You felt his leg press between your thighs as he rolled atop you, the weight of his body pressing into you. He angled your head towards his, switching the position of his mouth.
Your fingers dug into his broad shoulders, toes curling as he rhythmically pressed into you. His hand pulled your shirt up, and you flinched at the winter air seeping under the blanket and stinging your skin. Abruptly shocked from your daze to feel the throbbing of your leg, you pressed a hand against his hip, nudging him back. He propped his weight on his hands and knees, mumbling a curse to himself when he noticed you massaging your thigh. He had forgotten you were still injured and he had just put all his weight on you. What was he thinking?
Well, he knew what he was thinking, but why did he think now was a good time?
Rolling onto the mattress beside you, he placed his hands beside yours, soothingly working his fingers along the muscle. Your fingers intertwined with his as you softly apologized once more, “I’m sorry I can’t make your life better.” He looked at you in disbelief,
“You already have.”

After El Paso, the ‘send her back’ chant echoes to some as a prelude to murder
By GRIFF WITTES | Published August 13 at 8:10 PM ET | Washington Post | Posted August 15, 2019 8:18 PM ET |
GREENVILLE, N.C. — Weeks before the bullets of El Paso, the words of Greenville echoed through this small city on the North Carolina coastal plain — and across the nation.
Samar Badwan, a Greenville resident, watched that day as 8,000 neighbors and fellow citizens jammed a local basketball arena to serenade the president with a chant of “Send her back,” a response to Trump’s insistence that a Muslim, Somali American congresswoman should “go back” to the land of her birth.
“As we say in the South, he’s stirring the pot,” Badwan remembers thinking. “And that’s a very dangerous game. People are listening.”
That visit — and that chant — continues to reverberate loudly here nearly a month later, particularly for those such as Badwan, who see themselves as targets of a campaign to whip up xenophobia and hate.
After this month’s El Paso shooting, in which 22 people were killed by a gunman who parroted the president’s warnings about an “invasion” of immigrants, the words carry a particularly ominous resonance: as a prelude to murder.
“In my heart, I knew what his message was going to be,” Badwan said, as she sipped sweet tea at her local Starbucks. “I didn’t know the extent to which it would impact our small town.”
Before that day, Badwan never had to question whether her hijab was incompatible with her Southern drawl. She never had to fear that her North Carolina neighbors might hold her Palestinian heritage against her. She never had to think that in Greenville — a city she has been proud to call home for 30 years, raising three children along the way — her faith would mark her as an unwanted outsider.
Then the president came to town.
AN INTERNATIONAL CITY
Greenville, a university city of just under 100,000, touts itself as diverse and inclusive, but it was introduced to much of the country through a chant condemned by the Anti-Defamation League as “the sound of intolerance.”
A recent study by University of North Texas researchers found a 226 percent surge in reported hate crimes in counties that hosted 2016 Trump campaign rallies when compared with those that did not. Police in Greenville say they have seen no increase in reported hate speech or crimes since the president’s July 17 visit.
But to immigrants, refugees and others who don’t fit neatly into some people’s ideas of what an American should look like, the appearance has spawned fears that the president’s words could be used as a pretext for violence.
The crowd’s chant has also prompted painful reflection: Was the hostility on display at the rally new for Greenville? Or was it here all along, just waiting to be activated?
Heidi Serrano, who was born in Guatemala but who has lived in Greenville her entire adult life, has reluctantly concluded the latter. She now wonders if some of her neighbors and co-workers truly want her here.
“Trump has allowed people to say what’s in their hearts,” said Serrano, 39. “That’s been the hardest part for me. You think you know somebody.”
As Serrano spoke, a diverse group of children shrieked with delight as they bounded up and down an inflatable slide. Mothers wearing hijabs casually bantered, while dads toggled between English and Spanish as they led their children on a tour of a firetruck. African American and white families shared barbecue, fresh off the grill.
It was National Night Out, a chance for police officers to mingle with residents, and the idyllic scene at Greenville’s Jaycee Park reflected the message advertised in welcome signs posted on the outskirts of the city: “We are building an inclusive community.”
Many residents say, on the whole, that is what it is.
Badwan, who came here as a teenager and has never left, said no one in Greenville has ever told her to go back to where she came from. (A Palestinian American who pronounces her first name “summer” to make it easier on non-Arab tongues, she was born in Washington.)
Some people do tell her Greenville is too small, too isolated from big-city attractions — a minor island of urbanity in a sea of farms and fields.
But Badwan, who teaches autistic students and serves as an Arabic interpreter for the local school district, couldn’t imagine a better place to live.
“I do a lot of traveling,” she said, “but there’s nothing like coming back here.”
Greenville boasts a high-quality state university, top-notch hospital and thriving arts district. Everything she might need is within a short drive, and the community’s leaders, she said, support the city’s diversity.
After a gunman in March sprayed two New Zealand mosques with bullets, killing 51 people, Badwan texted local officials to invite them to a vigil outside of Greenville’s mosque. All of them showed up.
“Samar, if your mosque needs me to come and sit by the door during prayers so you feel safe, I will come,” a local pastor told her.
She thanked him for his offer, but the mosque’s leaders decided they would need more: They hired a security guard to protect worshipers, who can number in the hundreds during Islamic holidays and who hail from Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Morocco, Syria and beyond — a reflection of the fact that this city, which is still predominantly made up of native-born white and black citizens, is becoming ever more international.
“Sometimes, people in Greenville can be isolated from what the rest of the world really is,” said longtime resident Ann Hamze. “But there’s so much more diversity here now. The world has descended on Greenville.”
Hamze taught social studies in the public schools for 25 years, and she tried to instill in her students a sense for the wider world. She had worked overseas for the U.S. Agency for International Development earlier in her career, and her husband is Lebanese.
She thought the city had moved beyond some of the racial prejudice she had seen decades ago in Greenville and that for some is reflected in the monument to Confederate soldiers that stands in the heart of the city’s downtown.
Then she watched the Trump rally, and she heard the chant.
“I was surprised,” she said. “I was scanning the crowd, hoping that none of my former students from seventh-grade social studies were there.”
‘HURT AND BETRAYED'
Trump’s rally prompted heated exchanges on the letters page of Greenville’s newspaper, the Daily Reflector.
“I have a confession to make. I was at the president’s rally Wednesday night, and when the chant ‘send them back’ broke out, I joined in, with enthusiasm,” wrote Steven Van Cleave, a resident of nearby Winterville. “And I have another confession to make. I do not feel the slightest need to apologize to anyone for doing so.”
The chant, Van Cleave wrote, had been directed at four congresswomen who “have nothing but contempt for this country” and who “should leave and go to a country they admire such as Cuba or Venezuela.”
The four congresswomen, who have been told by Trump to “go back” to where they came from, are all people of color. Three were born in the United States; the fourth, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), was born in Somalia and came to the United States as a refugee when she was a child.
At the dental office where she works, Serrano challenged co-workers who support the president to defend his words — and the crowd’s.
They did: The chant, she was told, was all about the congresswomen and their political beliefs, not about their race, ethnicity or religion.
Serrano was unconvinced. She felt “hurt and betrayed,” the crowd’s words settling in her mind like a slur against entire groups of people. It’s something, she said, she couldn’t have imagined only a few years ago.
“There was a filter, and now the filter has been broken,” she said. “My Hispanic friends are afraid to go to the store. They’re afraid to do anything. It’s scary.”
Newcomers to Greenville say that they, too, have noticed a shift.
Tareq al-Hilali, 33, came to the city as a refugee five years ago after fleeing his native Iraq. He and his family soon opened a convenience store, where they serve fried chicken to an appreciative clientele and field inquiries about the finer points of their religion.
“Why don’t you eat pork? Why does your sister wear a hijab?” said Hilali. “People ask questions, but they’re nice questions.”
His sister is less convinced that the interest is so benign. When she first moved to the United States, she said, she felt no fear walking around the city while wearing her hijab.
That has changed. Trump, she said, is responsible.
“I don’t feel safe anymore,” said Sura al-Hilali, 24.
Something else has changed, too. A few months ago, after hours of study crammed in between work at the store and her university classes, she passed her citizenship test.
“They can’t send me back now,” she said. “I have my rights.”
