actually. no offense or some offence meant. those are actually some upper middle class white kid ass results. the results can be skewed by both the age and race of people voting in the poll - tumblr is largely a) young b) white c) american. however one of these statistics Will Surprise You. disclaimer: i pulled these stats really quickly and they are usa-centric. theyre all from past 2020 i think tho
the cdc states that only 5.3% of people ages 18-24 smoke cigs, which is the lowest percentage across age groups. the next age group of 25-44yos jumps up to 12.6%. (meanwhile, vapes are most commonly used by 18-24yos at 11% - i am a part of this population)
(however, vapes are most commonly used by white ppl, and cigarettes are secondmost commonly used by white ppl, and indigenous people smoke the most according to one source i pulled but not according to this one, which i think is the one in the wrong)
we briefly covered race and age now let's cover class, which is where the big money is (literally)
"Current cigarette smoking was higher among people with a lower annual household income than those with higher annual household incomes" (CDC) - some stats: 18.3% of those with a lower income, 12.3% median income, 6.7% high income. also smoking is more prevalent in the american south (and midwest) than in the west and north. west virginia has the most smokers of any state (25%), and west virginia is the third poorest state in the country. the rural south has the highest percentage of smokers in general. those without higher education have a higher smoking rate than those with.
so. quick conclusions. more white people smoke than any race other than indigenous people. young people from ages 18-24, which is the demographic of this site, smoke the least out of every other age groups. poor and rural people are by far the most likely to use nicotine products, and also, more disabled people smoke than abled people + WAY more people with mental health issues smoke than those who do not have mental health issues.
also let's not act like smokers don't "give a shit about not having lung cancer", we do care - most (67.7%) of smokers want to quit, and only 8.8% of people who have tried to quit smoking in the past year (according to a 2022 study) actually succeeded. i have nic gum in my cheek as i type this, i am on my third quit attempt, i am southern, white, rural, and working class.
upper middle class white* kid ass results. biased. congrats we've inadvertently found the demographic of this website thru the silhouette of smoking stats vs the results of this poll. i think that a lot of you are middle class and also kind of fucking rude to act like we don't give a shit about our health (ONLY 8.8% OF PEOPLE WHO QUIT IN THE PAST YEAR ACTUALLY SUCCEEDED. NICOTINE IS ADDICTIVE). however i am cool, not a virgin, and keep having to tell people that i have a bf so make ur own conclusions with that.
a late addition that i don't feel like paraphrasing: Smoking prevalence, age of onset, intensity of use, and rate and speed of smoking progression among youth varies by race and ethnicity. In 2014, among middle-school students, Hispanics had the highest prevalence at 3.7% followed by non-Hispanic whites (NHWs) at 2.2% and non-Hispanic blacks (NHBs) at 1.7%.6 Among high-school students, NHWs had the highest smoking prevalence at 10.8% followed by Hispanics at 8.8%, other non-Hispanics (ONHs) at 5.3%, and NHBs at 4.5%.6 Compared with their white counterparts, African Americans initiate smoking later, consume fewer cigarettes per day, and progress more slowly toward regular smoking.7 Rate of smoking initiation and progression from nondaily to daily smoking is higher among white (18.2% and 18.8%) and Hispanic (20.3% and 15.9%) youth than black youth (16.2% and 9.6%).8 African Americans have lower smoking prevalence in adolescence but higher smoking prevalence in adulthood when compared with whites.9 Among those who initiate smoking by age 14 years, continued smoking into adulthood is higher among African Americans compared with their white counterparts.
my heavy smoker grandparents came over very briefly and the whole house smells like absolute shit now. So I (chronic tumblrina) got thinking.
