everyone shut up i need to go on a very very log rant!!!

I need to tell you about the goat kid in the second to last image here- his name is Bessethel Hascroth and I slipped a child version of him into my college homework here because I was exhausted and needed something to be happy about.

He's part of two main stories, but might appear in others (like loose stitches) in the background or as a minor character, if I feel like it. (I'm a huge proponent of "just put your character's in each others stories")

in one story he's an eco terrorist and a villain. In another story he's the protagonist (though you could still see him as the villain because he's a serial killer).

anyway here's a synopsis of whats up with him. i'm leaving a lot out for the sake of not writing a 20 page essay, but yeah. its gonna be long.

Story One: Bessethels shitty little life

Bessethel Hascroth originates from a hedonistic demon world called The Redlands which is basically a huge never ending desert. His soul is all fucked up because the oldest and biggest Hascrothian Demon (there are multiple kinds of demons and Hascrothian is one of them) made a pact with a human to have a demon reborn as his grandson in exchange for riches. But he didn’t just kill the kids soul, he smashed a young demon and a human soul together. Bessethel Hascroth grew up in 1800’s Britain where he very quickly learned something was wrong with him.

As an adult he traveled the world and picked up a partner named Asadenya, him and Asa eventually went back to Britain, where they planned to live as secret lovers for the rest of their lives. Asadenya honestly didn’t like it in Britain cuz he was a big fan of academia and learning shit, but not a huge fan of racism and constantly having to conform and prove that he was Civilized.

Unfortunately due to The Plot Bessethel couldn’t stop fucking killing people, and Asadenya found out one night after an attempted kidnapping/murder gone wrong ends with Bessethel crawling home bleeding and his body morphing between demonic traits and his pale-ass human form. Then Asadenya shoots Bessethel and Bessethel wakes up in the Redlands after a bit of time in a weird limbo space. He never really recovers from that breakup and still thinks of Asadenya obsessively, despite Asa literally having killed him.

throughout the entire book it is unclear what Bessethel is or where he comes from, you only find out his backstory as he does, which he doesn't find out until far into his own life.

Interlude(?):

Between these two stories, Bessethel gathers a cult of sorts in the Redlands. The demons of the Redlands are actually quite nice and kind to one another, as they are all immortal and most of them have never left their perfect realm, so all they care about is hedonistic joy. Bessethel becomes a fixture of fascination, because he's not like other demons in a few key ways.

1) he can't shapeshift at all, all demons can shapeshift because all demons are made of the same red sand that the entire Redlands is made of. Bessethel cannot shapeshift, because his soul is fused with a human one and his form is static. This makes some of the other demons regard him as "More Real" in a way. he also requires help because of this, he can't move through the Redlands as quickly as others because he can't just fall into the sand and reconstruct his body later, the way everyone else can. His followers love the chance to be legitimately useful in a world where most things aren't really set in stone that way.

2) he grew up outside of the Redlands, which is fucking insane. Even demons who've been outside of the Redlands for extended amounts of time mostly grew up there!!! They find his questions and point of view novel and delightful. and there's nothing better than novelty in the Redlands.

3) due to his experience with real world economies, societies, and stakes, he's one of the most fun people to play games with. in a world where nothing really matters, he makes things FEEL like they matter. (basically: he's a really good DM haha)

Bessethel uses his followers to help him find a way back to earth. He loved earth more than anything, and he misses not being there. More than that though, he misses humans. Part of him feels at home with demons in the Redlands, but part of him feels at home with humanity as well. He's unsure if he'll ever feel fully at peace or if he's destined to be a miserable in-between thing. His current plan is to bring some demons with him to the earth, because humans can't survive very long in the Redlands.

He also starts going as simply Hascroth, because Bessethel was his human name, and it's a sign of status to claim the name Hascroth since there are a lot of Hascrothian demons. but it's like, you've gotta be particularly old or special to claim the name Hascroth and still be recognizable.

His most loyal and fervent admirer is a Hascrothian demon who renamed himself to Helenjack, based off Bessethels two-name combination (bess and ethel).

Story Two: Mule

Mule's story is, unsurprisingly, about Mule! Who is a different OC, and who we wont be getting into right now.

In this story, while Mule spends the first book training with trolls in a cave city deep underground, Hascroth finds a Contract being offered from earth.

(important note: Contracts are the only way a demon can get out of the Redlands. Demons can be contracted out to a multitude of universes and realities. A contract is made between the demon and a person currently residing in the reality the contract is for. Demons are beholden to doing whatever the contract has written down, so if a contract proposes the demon help kill someone then the demon MUST do that as the contractor commands at penalty of extreme pain)

Hascroth finds this contract while investigating reports of a bunch of young demons agreeing to a slew of shady contracts and never being seen again. this is concerning because most demons never see a contract, they're very rare, and so the excitement might make them forget to read the fine print. so this new appearance of all these contracts is weird. BUT ALSO: Hascroth desperately wants to find a contract of his own for earth, and he's heard word that all these contracts snatching up young demons go to earth.

AND SO Hascroth stakes out the place these contracts are appearing (a sort of oasis where a lot of newly spawned Hascrothian demons hang out) and finds one. When he reads it and confirms with a witness it's exactly like the one his friend agrees to, he tells them that unfortunately this is a crude slavery contract and their demon buddies are probably not having a good time. he then tells his groupies he'll find a way to bring all the baby demons back and accepts the contract.

So while plotline A is happening with Mule, Hascroth spends plot B figuring out that all these demons have basically been kidnapped and are Working In The Crystal Mines or something for an evil troll named Orca, who's using all his demon slaves to improve his army of Evil Trolls who plan on overtaking the underground city that Mule is training to protect, in plotline A. Mule is basically training to kill Orca and never meets him until they have to fight him. but we get to see what Orca is like from Hascroths POV.

LONG STORY SHORT: Hascroth gets close to Orca by being clearly different from other demons, being able and willing to use magic items for him (something trolls cant do because trolls are partially made of magic and so using magic fucks with their bodies) and informing for him.

By the time that Mule confronts Orca and kills him in the final fight of book 1, Hascroth has managed to gain a lot of power and loyalty from a select number of trolls and basically all of the young demons (including one named nicodemus who will be important later-) and Hascroth, having figured out how to transfer Orca's contracts from Orca to himself, basically has an army of angry and abused kids at his fingertips- as well as the few trolls who treated the demons well and decide to join Hascroth's side of things.

Hascroth gloats over Orca's dying body and fucks around with his organs just for fun. Then Hascroth is like "huh. well now that I'm on earth and I've seen the state of things (climate change fucking up his beautiful earth which he LOVES) maybe I should... do something about it."

Story Two: Mule Part Two

In what would be book 2 if I could make myself write as much as I made myself draw- Mule is like "hey why is Orca's gang still up and running i killed him???" and it turns out the reason is that Hascroth is in charge now! He's sent home any of the demons that want to go home, but honestly a lot of them stayed because their trauma has changed them and made returning to the Redlands physically and mentally difficult. (which Hascroth secretly likes because it means that they're more like him)

some of these enslaved demons were sent out to the human world and actually have human families and loved ones they're attached too as well- like Nicodemus! Nicodemus is a snake demon who ends up being a spy/informant for Mule, ends up getting caught for it, and gets forced to become a puppet for Hascroth through alterations to his contract- but that's not important rn.

BASICALLY. Before, Orca wanted to wage war against the trolls of the underground city, and once he won that he wanted to wage war on white people (there's a reason for this i swear but this is long enough as it is) which nobody really thought was going to go well. It would probably just mean trolls get wiped out tbh, but any exiled trolls basically had to join Orca's gang, cuz if they didn't they would die without community support.

but NOW that Orca is gone, things are maybe gonna get worse ? (after a brief period of peace) because while Hascroth doesn't care about killing humans that much anymore, he DOES care that climate change is happening (cuz he loves the earth) so he's like. what if i just destroyed a lot of stuff that's polluting the earth with my army of traumatized demon babies?

and he doesn't care about the effect this will have on humanity or any of the societies he plans on doing this to. So Mule is like "why are you doing this????? that's gonna kill so many people???" and he's like "lol idc, i'll protect me and mine, including any humans who join me, so it literally doesn't bother me."

so yeah Mule goes from protecting just one city from one gang of strong trolls to now having to fight hoards of vengeful demons with anger issues and trauma, who are hellbent on destroying whatever it is Hascroth points them at.

Also, Hascroth falls in love with a homeless thirty-something year old human named Deldew and Helenjack is jealous. Eventually Helenjack and Deldew accidentally get molded together but this post is so fucking long already. good god.

Monstrous Homes - 2022

forgot to post this at the time, but this was my drawing final last semester. 

Each of these images was accompanied by a short page of text that served as an interview of the characters. 

It’s mainly about human/monster adoptions and had a lot to do with how my queerness manifested as an interest in seeing the humanity/personhood of monsters/creatures/whatever media was trying to “other.”

I’m thinking a lot again about my university fruk au and idk if I’ve talked about it much here so im gonna talk about it - I call it the university au because the first half of it takes place there but it actually extends beyond that into their adult lives too :) LOOOONG TEXTPOST INCOMING

But basically it follows Arthur and Francis in their lives as uni flatmates living in halls, going to a university located in britain somewhere. Arthur is a 1st year music student and Francis is a final year fine art student! They’re both undergrads and were just randomly assigned flatmates, which is how they met in September! They initially hit it off pretty badly. Arthur thinks Francis is annoying and pretentious, the way he actually cooks in the kitchen, the way he paints in the living space like a posh artsy weirdo. To him, Francis seems to have everything right; he’s a good artist, he seems to have lots of friends, he seems to have a stable amount of money, and he seems to have won the genetic lottery as far as his looks go. Arthur hates him. On the other side of the coin, Francis thinks Arthur is rude, loud, and unnecessarily mean. He plays his guitar loudly in his room, opting for metal riffs most of the time, and he often comes home almost dangerously drunk at five in the morning, slamming every door he goes through and waking Francis each time he does. Arthur seems to have it all wrong; he’s messy, he never does chores around the flat, he’s rude and rejects any and all of Francis’ attempts to be friendly, and he seems to be a danger to himself with his constant nights out. Francis doesn’t like him, but he tried, at the very least.

It’s only as Francis begins to overhear some things that he starts to see a bigger picture to the issue. In a way, he was almost jealous of Arthur in the beginning. This boy had a rebellious nature, and didn’t seem to care what anyone thought of him. Francis, who would admit that he worries too much about what others think, definitely envied that quality. Even more so, Francis was jealous of the fact that Arthur seemed to be in a committed relationship. I mean, really, how was it that rude, mean spirited Arthur could have a boyfriend to always be hanging out with, and Francis, who was a hopeless romantic with a lot of love to give, could never get anyone to stay? It drove him mad. That was, until, Francis started to notice the cracks. At around the end of November, Francis removes his headphones to… yelling. A lot of it. There is a door slam, and presumably, it was Arthur’s boyfriend, leaving after a fight. Francis puts his headphones back on. After all, it’s none of his business and it is not unlike Arthur to be starting arguments - at least not in Francis’ experience. But then Francis notices that this is becoming an increasingly common occurrence, and the fights sound like they’re getting worse. Since Arthur’s room is next door to his, he hears almost everything, but Francis feels his stomach drop for the first time when, after several door slammings, he hears Arthur crying. Presumably, all alone, in his room.

When Francis thinks about it, he hasn’t really seen Arthur much for the past couple of weeks. It’s early December now, and Christmas is coming up, so Francis had put it down to that, but…. Something doesn’t feel right. He knows for certain that he hasn’t seen Arthur come to the kitchen at all for a day or two, and the only times he’s heard him, are when he comes back drunk in the middle of the night again. When Francis goes out to buy himself some ingredients and some snacks, he can’t help himself from picking up a couple of instant noodle packs, and a bottle of lemonade. He puts them in a separate bag to his other food, and after putting his own shopping away, he stands outside Arthur’s door, hesitating. Francis was sort of nervous, expecting Arthur to be angry with him - that’s how he always seemed. He might slam the door in Francis’ face, and maybe then, Francis would never try to befriend him again. It felt safer not to. After consideration, Francis knocks anyway, and waits for few seconds as some shuffling occurs. Arthur opens the door with a tired look on his face and, after an awkward and short conversation, Francis offers the bag to Arthur. Arthur takes it hesitantly, peering inside before he looks up and meets Francis’ eyes. A lot goes on in that short and wordless exchange.

Things go on the same for a while, until the Christmas holidays roll around. The other flatmates leave, and as it turns out, Francis and Arthur have the flat to themselves for a few weeks. Francis opted not to go home since it’s expensive to travel, especially around the Christmas season, and Arthur does not specify why he didn’t go home. Francis is sort of enjoying the Christmas holidays, since he mostly has the living space to himself, it’s easier to paint or sculpt in that area. Arthur comes in occasionally, to get some food, and usually leaves - but he is not hostile anymore. Suddenly, there seems to be some sort of understanding between them. Francis is sculpting in the living area one day, when a sudden voice makes him jump.

“What are you making?”

Francis turns, and Arthur stands in the doorway with a can of off brand fizzy orange in his hand. Francis looks at him, and then he looks back at his piece.

“Well, it’s a sculpture, for one of my modules. It’s abstract, it’s meant to represent how I feel.”

“Hm.” Arthur stares at the piece for a little bit. “I never understood abstract art.”

“Maybe abstract art isn’t supposed to be understood. Sometimes abstract art is the only way we can present a complicated emotion.” Francis replies, and Arthur gives a single nod before he leaves.

After that, they seem to talk more. Not only is there an understanding, but there is an interest. One day, Arthur informs Francis that he has broken up with his boyfriend. Francis is really glad. Really, really glad. He’s just glad that Arthur is safe. Arthur becomes less of a cryptid and chooses to accompany Francis in the kitchen a little bit more often. Maybe abstract art is worth something after all, he decides. Maybe he understands some of the pieces now. Francis’ art is pretty. Like it’s maker. Francis finds out that Arthur’s family doesn’t exactly approve of his choice in degree. As an art student, Francis gets it. Arthur learns that Francis is trans too. Arthur is pre-everything, and notes how Francis always respected him without ever questioning his voice or his body. With a soft smile, Francis reveals he has been taking hormones for a year or so now. Arthur seems to show up in the living space even more. Francis decides he doesn’t mind Arthur’s guitar playing after all. He’s good at it, actually. Francis asks if he can sing as well. Arthur gets out his guitar, sits down with it, and proves it to him.

By the time the academic year gets into its second half, around mid-January, Arthur and Francis are comfortably friends, and their friendship only grows. Arthur reveals that he doesn’t like their other flatmates very much, so when they return from their Christmas break, the two start to spend time in each others’ rooms. Arthur’s room is not as disgusting as Francis expected. It’s rather messy, with eyeliner smudges and pink hair dye splatters decorating the bathroom, but Arthur seems to make an effort to at least have his sleeping area clean. Francis’ bedroom is pretty, with fairy lights hung up and satin sheets on his bed. It smells strongly of perfumes and body sprays, and Arthur wants to pinch his nose at first, but he gets used to it.

By the end of April, feelings too intimate to be called platonic begin to develop. The academic year will be drawing to a close in just under a month, and then they will have summer together. In August, Francis will have to leave, and, being in his final year, he won’t be returning. Francis tries not to think about it, Arthur can’t stop.

On a warm night at the end of May, the two are hanging out in Arthur’s room. The setting sun peers through the windows. Arthur sits on his bed, and Francis sits on a chair. They are just talking. Somehow, the topic has gotten onto relationships. Francis confesses that, sure, he’s hooked up with people before, but he’s never actually been in a real relationship. Francis says that he only seems to fall for people who are unavailable, or wouldn’t like him in that way anyway. Arthur asks him what he’d do if someone did like him that way. Francis hesitates. He says it would depend on who the person was. Arthur asks, what if it was me? Francis jolts and stares at him. Arthur repeats what he said, but with clearer wording.

In June, Arthur and Francis hold hands on their walk to the supermarket, under the beating sun. On another day, they go to a local dessert place together. Francis asks if this is a date. Arthur says it’s whatever Francis wants it to be. At night, Arthur lays on Francis’ chest and mentions that his ex never let him do this. He would just use him and then leave. Francis holds Arthur a little tighter that night, and makes sure he falls asleep first, rubbing his back to soothe him. On a morning, Francis makes omelettes in the kitchen. He makes two. Arthur hugs him from behind, and plants a kiss on the back of his neck. They are young, and their romance is awkward, and new to both of them, but they love each other, and that’s all that matters.

In July, Francis paints a portrait of a person, and Arthur writes a song about one.

Then, August arrives.

August is cruel, and the end of summer signifies a loss of warmth. The days are getting shorter, and Francis has left. The two try to stay in touch, but it is hard. With so many things happening in their real lives, sparing time to text and call becomes increasingly difficult. Francis has to find a way to survive, financially, and Arthur has to study harder as he progresses in school, and deal with the new people he is surrounded by.

One day, Francis goes to message Arthur. The message won’t go through, and it makes Francis cry. He wishes he had stayed. He couldn’t have afforded to. Arthur didn’t want to have to change his phone number, but his old ex wouldn’t stop harassing him, and he was desperate for peace. It hits Arthur suddenly one night, that he hasn’t heard from Francis in months, and he knows it’s his own fault. He finds Francis’ number, and tries to text it. The number is out of service.

When Arthur is in his mid twenties, his band is doing small shows around the country. He’s happy - his bandmates are good friends, he’s had some decent relationships here and there, and his band, while not famous by a long shot and combined with his part time job at a warehouse, brings in just enough money to pay the rent and buy food. Really, that’s all Arthur needs. By now, he’s been taking T for a long time, and he was even able to get top surgery last year. Things are going great, in fact. When the vocalist and leader of the band tells him they booked the band’s first show abroad, Arthur is ecstatic. This is huge for the band!! If this show goes well, it could kickstart the band into stardom - at least, that’s what he hopes - and in Paris, too! Surely the venue would be stunning, or something… (spoiler alert it’s some shitty basement club). Arthur can’t wait.

Arthur and his band have just arrived in Paris for the weekend. It’s spring, the perfect season for new beginnings, and the band are having fun touring the city and sightseeing. They’ve been saving for months, and plan on making the most of this weekend.

It’s outside a cafe that Arthur sees him.

Arthur freezes up entirely, trying to process it. It can’t be, it can’t be, he tells himself, but it is. Sitting on a wooden stool, with an easel and a painting facing him, palette and brush in hand, with his long hair tied back in a bun, it’s unmistakably him. He looks older, but not by much. He’s even more handsome, having fully grown into his features. Arthur hesitates. Would it be weird to just approach him like this? Should he leave him alone? Arthur should leave him alone. He turns away, and then he stops. If he doesn’t say something now, the possibility of never, ever seeing Francis again is more than real, it’s almost certain. Arthur turns to look again. Francis is stunning, and Arthur swallows the lump in his throat as he tells his bandmates that he’s going to talk to someone. Arthur walks over through a crowd, and his whole body is shaking. He doesn’t know what to say. He doesn’t know how to open. He doesn’t know if Francis even wants to see him again.

“I like your painting…” Arthur says, and he can barely get the words out.

Francis turns, slowly, and meets Arthur’s eyes with shock on his face. He doesn’t say anything as he gets up from his seat, facing Arthur, who notices the tears welling in his eyes.

“I didn’t quite recognise your voice, I thought it couldn’t really be you-“ Francis replies, his voice shaking.

There is silence between them, before Arthur shakily offers his arms, and Francis throws himself into them. Francis cries, hard. Arthur bites back tears, holding him like the world depends on it.

“I missed you, I missed you so much.” Francis cries. Arthur responds that he missed Francis too.

That night, Arthur doesn’t join his band for post gig drinks. He rushes outside and into the taxi that’s waiting for him, to be driven off to an apartment he has never been to before. Someone special is waiting there for him. He throws himself at Francis, who somehow lifts him and spins him around. They hug and kiss and stay up all night together, talking and cuddling and loving each other. Francis introduces Arthur to his cat, who seems to take a liking to Arthur right off the bat. Francis comments that she usually doesn’t like strangers like that. They dance and play and talk some more, exchanging their new numbers, email, addresses for physical letters, anything to make sure they can’t lose each other again. Francis makes sure that Arthur knows that the loss of contact wasn’t actually his fault, it just happens. Arthur makes sure Francis knows he will do anything in his power for it to never happen again. Within hours, they are so close again it’s like they were never apart, and except for when Arthur is playing gigs, they spend every hour of the weekend together. On Sunday night, Arthur begs Francis to come back to England with him, even if it’s just for a week or something. Francis drops his cat off at his sister’s, and goes with Arthur. They spend more time together, inseparable for the entire week, and at the end of the week, Arthur surprises Francis with a ring. It’s not an engagement ring, or an expensive piece by any means, but Arthur says he saw it and couldn’t help himself. He hugs Francis tightly as Francis bursts into tears again, leaning on Arthur’s shoulder as Arthur kisses his cheek.

Francis needs to go home again for now, but this time, they do not fall out of touch. They will find a way to be together permanently, somehow. The ring is a promise of that. When Francis was younger, he painted a portrait of Arthur. It hangs proudly now, as one of his many original works. It even got to be part of an exhibition. When Arthur was younger, he wrote a song about Francis. He gets to play it now, at his gigs. The vocalist never sings it quite right, but Arthur lets his electric guitar be the one to really sing the song, the way it was meant to be.

They both know they will find a way.

Day 26 - Cider

I’m running a little late and will hopefully have Day 27 for today as well but for now here’s Day 26 of @drawlight​‘s advent calender prompt list https://drawlight.tumblr.com/post/188869931294/aziraphale-crowley-for-half-an-hour-youve-been with Cider.

Fermenting apples has been a tradition as old as both fermenting and apples have been known. The apples from the last harvest have long been used to wake the trees ready for the spring to come. It’s also common to just get drunk around midwinter, and home made scrumpy is easy to come by when the ex-Antichrist has an interest in stealing from orchards.

Midwinter around Britain has old traditions around apples and the harvest. Crowley remembers the early days, the Gauls, later with the Normans and later still as the West Country and East Anglia set to each other on the right way to do cider.

Wassailing had been big in the early days as a gift to the green man and a way to start waking the trees ready for the next year’s harvest. Crowley still had some very fond memories of his first time wassailing and arriving back amidst the fires to a slightly baffled but surprisingly relaxed angel. Then the joy of a very short season in a house built by angel miracle that had made his superiors too uncomfortable to come in for his yearly check in despite not knowing why they were so put off by it.

It had grown from mead with roasted apples and spices into something more like the French cidre and Saxon aeppelwin with sour apples and plenty of honey. Aziraphale had been more of a fan of that than Crowley, who had a surprisingly sweet tooth compared to the angel. It still reminded Crowley of Twelfth Night and of poor families making their way up to mansions with the hope of warmth and sustenance.

Getting the sweeter apples in had made things much more to Crowley’s taste, given that it let the humans really lean in to the fermentation process without having to worry about balancing the sweetness of it. There may have been a little more encouragement (tempting) of it into an art form at this point; which had of course resulted in the usual British pass-time of making schisms out of the way your neighbour does things for argument’s sake alone.

This naturally had the knock-on effect on Crowley’s reputation in Hell, though it was definitely something that humans would always do on their own. Like fighting over where you put the cream in a cream tea.

In any case pressing down apples to get drunk was a long-standing tradition for both the Brits and the horses that they kept. And alcohol, especially warmed and with any spice that could be found thrown in, was always popular over midwinter.

It does not come as a surprise to a certain principality that Crowley makes ‘grudging’ attempts to stay in contact with the Antichrist post Armagedidn’t. Ostensibly it’s to ensure that the boy remains safe after refusing Satan as his father and that there are no issues from any residual powers that may remain. It would be a lot more believable if he hadn’t also made sure to locate young Warlock, or if he didn’t dote on the boy in his own way when they visited to ‘monitor’ him.

Crowley made a habit of ensuring the kids got a present each over the holidays and took no small amount of delight in the arguments that it had caused for Pepper to get hers first for the Solstice. The kids had almost rioted and decided to go pagan with Pepper’s family just for the earlier gifts.

When they arrive in the winter of 2022 they find that Anathema has installed a small press outside in the garden and was trying her hand at some traditional scrumpy.

“The most traditional. As I understand, it’s supposed to come from stolen apples and Dog still has a habit of getting into the orchards and somehow leaving with enough apples for Adam to have an armful.” She smiles sideways at the young man who gives an offhand shrug.

He’s leaning against a wall with his phone out on some game and would look very much like any other teenager trying to be cool if he wasn’t also half a mirror to the 6000 year old being who was in a similar pose at the other end of the living room. Aziraphale is in two minds as to whether this made Crowley look like he’s trying to play the moody teenager or whether it said something about beings that came from Hell and chose otherwise. He’s certainly leaning towards teenager.

“You know, you really shouldn’t steal.” Aziraphale tuts, knowing that the young man won’t be listening to him regardless.

“Well, actually-” Wensleydale starts, to the groaning annoyance of Pepper “scrumping is technically an old tradition he’s keeping alive. It’s all in the books, and you really only take the apples that have fallen and won’t get picked for the harvest anyway.”

“I don’t think I’m quite convinced by that, but it’s amazing what you can do with fallen apples.” Aziraphale hums thoughtfully, it gets Crowley to look up for just long enough to give him a sour look before he goes back to what he’s doing.

“Well it’s all very interesting really.” Anathema smiles, going to pour out a couple of glasses. “Actually tried to see if it would work for something other than drinking at first. You know, fruit of knowledge picked from the fallen by the… by Adam. Seemed like it might have its own power of a kind but it just ended up being decent to drink.” She toasts over to them.

Aziraphale gestures back distractedly, watching Crowley closely as the other presses thin lips together and looks at the drink over the rim of his glasses. As though he were looking at the apples from beyond the grave and judging the trees wanting.

“The Them had a go of it yet?” He finally asked.

“Well, no. I mean, you can’t just give kids alcohol. Looks weird enough that they spend so much time over here anyway, never mind us getting them drunk.” Newton pipes up like the world’s nerviest meerkat.

“Y’know, as long as it’s with adults they’re legal to. We count as adults.” Crowley gave a half shrug, ignoring Wensley’s nervous glances around him in favour of the intrigued looks that Brian and Adam cast between them.

“They are children Crowley.” Aziraphale tuts in annoyance, mouth a thin line.

“Naaah. They’re teenagers.”

“And still not old enough to drink.” The angel glowers, flexing out his hands in a familiar gesture indicating ’And that’s final.’

Things were rarely ever final when Aziraphale declared them to be. In fact, Crowley took great delight in ensuring those words were the start of a great many temptations.

“Well-” Newton steps in uncertainly, almost stopping altogether when two sets of intense supernatural eyes settle solely on him. “They can with a meal. At home. We’re not really eating so much, though,-” he trails off, as though suddenly realising it was more of a couple’s argument than a discussion that he’d unwittingly wandered into.

“Little help in the kitchen, Newt?” Anathema calls through with impeccable timing, having disappeared back there at some point in the conversation.

Suddenly alone with four teenagers and a freelance demon with a bag of presents, Aziraphale doubles down. “It’s simply not right without their parents’ permission, Crowley.”

The demon huffs and pulls himself up to full height. “C’mon angel, it’s hardly more than apple juice anyway.”

“Then they can have some proper apple pressé. It’ll be hardly different from the real thing.”

“Aww c’mon. They’re hardly gonna get drunk, angel. ‘Tis the season and all that, I’ve seen younger kids go out wassailing.” Crowley points out, angling himself so that most of the table is obscured as a couple of cups appear on the table.

“That was with their parents and I can feel you doing that so don’t you dare think about playing coy with me you foul fiend.” Aziraphale huffs in exasperation as he steps around the demon only to find Brian most definitely flipping the cups upside down. “My boy, what on Earth are you-”

“Shh, trying out a magic trick. I’ve got to focus though. Doesn’t work otherwise.” Brian waves a little, face scrunching up in concentration.

“Oh! you’re learning magic? How wonderful, do show me.” Aziraphale practically vibrates, the glow of love from inside him that even Crowley could feel as a demon.

He settles himself in to watch the trick as Brian produces a partially melted chocolate coin from a pocket and slides it under one of the cups before showing off that he has nothing in his sleeves. Crowley watches in rapt attention as Adam uses the sudden distraction to gently pull the bottle off cider off the table.

Brian gamely keeps Aziraphale distracted as Pepper and Wensley finishes off their rather more innocent drinks and Adam refills the cups with cider. For a moment Crowley is the proudest he’s been since hearing that Warlock told Hastur he smelled of poo. He can immediately see how wrong this is going to go the moment one of them doesn’t like the taste and has a full cup left to drink and it only makes it all the more exciting for it.

Crowley has to force the grin down as Brian’s trick wraps up with a suitably encouraging clap from Aziraphale, despite mixing up the cups, and the cider bottle goes back into it’s place.

“Well,-” Crowley interrupts any further magic attempts with a brief clap of his hands, reaching to hand over the bag to Adam, who dutifully hands the presents out. “no use in just standing around then you’ve got presents to open. Happy holidays.” He raises a hand to toast and downs some of his own drink.

Watches Aziraphale’s smile around his glass quirk into an equally self-satisfied smirk as the Brian and Adam pull faces down into their cups.

“That might teach them to try things they aren’t ready for.” He murmurs, suddenly very close to Crowley’s ear.

This time Crowley has no hope of hiding the grin, faced with his beautiful, absolute bastard of an angel. “Oi, book girl. We’re toasting our health in here, you gonna come out or too busy snogging?”

Adam’s annoyed mutter that it’s gross and no one even calls it that anyway are ignored as the witch comes back into the room with Newton, and some spiced cookies, in tow.

“I hope you aren’t up to any mischief?” She asks knowingly, even as Adam vehemently shakes his head.

“Well then, Wæs þu hæl.” Aziraphale toasts warmly.

Crowley smiles with a shake of his head and leans in just for enough to brush a kiss against the angel’s cheek “Drinc hæl, and may it continue into the new year.”

The Auror (Series) Chapter 2: One Day At A Time

Percival Graves Imagine

Description: In this chapter, Y/N begins her first day at MACUSA, and showcases a bit of her skills in the Auror’s Training. Meanwhile, Graves works on being the man he once was.

February 4th, 1928.

          It was another winter day. Yesterday, it had been rather cold in the city, and luckily the sun delivered some warmth throughout the day to make it less wintry. Today, however, no one was safe from the low temperatures of the bitter cold. Overnight, the sky had decided to lay a blanket of snow across the city landscape. The streets were impossible to walk in, there were barely any cars on the roads, and the wind felt like tiny daggers stabbing the flesh of anyone left exposed.

          Among the little amount of people lurking the city’s avenues, was Y/N. She, like the very few, was on her way to work- her first day that is. She walked- more like stomped- her way through the snow, until she finally made it to MACUSA. Once inside, she tried to shake of some of the freckles of snow that had landed on her black, wool trench coat. When she was snow free, she walked up the ramp, admiring the magnificent surroundings of the MACUSA headquarters. I’ll never get used to this. She thought.

          She stepped up to the elevator to wait for its arrival. After a few moments, it arrived, and Y/N marched inside.

          “Department of Magical Law Enforcement, Wand Permit Office, please.” She notified the elf. As the door was closing, a small voice came from outside.

          “Hold the elevator, please!” The person said. The door reopened and there stood Queenie and Tina.

          “Thank you, Red.” Tina spoke, as both she and Queenie stepped inside.

          “Good Morning, Y/N!” Queenie said vibrantly.

          “Good Morning, Queenie. Good Morning, Tina.” Y/N replied.

          “Good Morning, Y/N. How are you today?” Tina asked.

          “I’m good. Thanks for asking.” Y/N answered, “And, you gals?”

          “Great!” Both sisters said at the same time and then looked at each other. All three girls broke into a fit of laughter before they landed in the Wand Permit Office. Y/N and Queenie walked out, but Tina remained inside.

          “You guys go ahead. I’m supposed to be handling an interview and some files for Mr. Graves.” Tina told the girls.

          “Ok. We’ll see you later, Tina.” Y/N said, and the door to the elevator closed.

          “Follow me, honey. I need to show you what you’ll be doing while in this office.” Queenie told Y/N as she guided her over to a desk. Suddenly, Y/N was shivering, still carrying that blistering cold from the streets.

          “Oh, Honey! Your freezing!” Queenie exclaimed, but her voice was low and fruitful.

          “Just a bit. Y-you know I tried to be as p-prepared as possible, but that weather got the best of me…” A shaky Y/N said.

          “Well that’s because you didn’t clean up in the entrance.”

          “What?”

          “With flick of your wand you would have managed to shake some of the snow and wetness off!” Queenie told her as she giggled.

          With that statement, Queenie took Y/N’s coat and cleaned it with a flick of her wand. Then she hung the coat at a chair nearby and examined Y/N’s appearance. Y/N wore a pair of trousers again, paired with a top and a soft cardigan. She studied her up and down, and noticed her brown ankle heel-boots were a bit wet with snow. She waved her wand again and dried them right up. Then, glanced up at Y/N.

          “Oh, Honey! You look so chic!” Queenie told her.

          “I- Thank You. For the complement and the cleaning.” Y/N said, amazed by what she had just seen.

          “It’s no problem. Just remember, you’re a witch! I know your work in the no-maj world got you used to not using magic every day, but you can use it now. Especially now.”

          “So, your sister told you about my years in-” She was cut off.

          “Accounting? No, she didn’t. I got all that myself.” Queenie said with a bright voice.

          “Then how? I mean, yesterday you did the same thing. It’s like you can read my mind or… something…” Y/N was catching on.

          She must me a legilimens. But it’s so weird. They are…

          “Rare? Not really. There’s a few around.” Queenie said as she giggled.

          “So, that’s how you knew about me yesterday. You read my mind.”

          “I did. I’m sorry, I can’t help it sometimes.” Queenie’s voice lowered.

          “No, no. It’s alright. It’s good to know.” Y/N said, and Queenie smiled at her. “I don’t mean to sound rude, but please don’t read my mind all the time. I think it’ll take away from us actually communicating. Not to mention, somethings I’d like to keep private.”

          “Understandable. Many people aren’t as nice about as you’ve just been. I respect that, plus I think we’re gonna be great friends, and I know you do too…” Queenie said in a lively voice. Y/N smiled at her, knowing her mind had just been read, but she let it sly seeing as Queenie didn’t mean any harm.

          “That I do.” She answered.

          “Oh, goody! Now, let’s get to work. There’s things I need to teach you so you can work with the mail and Wand Permits.” Queenie said.

          With that final thought, Queenie proceeded to teach Y/N the basics of her position. There was some mail sorting, filling, and some revision on many wand permits. From the looks of it, the girls had a busy morning ahead of them, never the less, at least Y/N catches on quickly.

          Later in the morning, down in the lower floors, in the Major Investigations Department, Percival Graves awaited the presence of Madam President. After receiving her note yesterday, Graves had reported himself to the department, but the President was nowhere to be found. He had then received word from Tina that their meeting had been canceled for certain reasons she didn’t know. Today, he was summoned once again, and like yesterday, he awaited her arrival.

          He sat in one of the wooden chairs of the grand table in the center of the room. He was reading the paper; it’s images showcasing different ruins across New York and Great Britain. The dark arts were growing stronger and attacking the different locations, creating panic among both the wizarding community and the no-maj community. Graves closed the paper and tossed it aside. Suddenly, the doors of the room were open and Graves rose to his feet. Still, it wasn’t Madam President who was walking through the doors, instead it was Queenie and Y/N who strutted in, each carrying small piles of letters. Queenie appeared to be giving Y/N a brief explanation of the department and its offices.

          “This entire floor is the Major Investigation Department. This space is used as a meeting room. Mainly the President, the director and the aurors meet here. Its good you know about it, you’ll be gathering here pretty soon. And-” Queenie had been rambling as they walked around the room. When she spotted Graves near one of the cabinets, she came to a stop, making Y/N bump into her.

          “Mr. Graves, sir. I apologize, I didn’t expect anyone to be here.” Queenie said in a low voice. Y/N stood next to her looking between the two.

          “Yes, I figured. Miss Y/L/N.” He said while looking at Y/N with a straight face.

          “Mr. Graves.” Y/N only responded and nodded.

          “Miss Goldstein, if you don’t appear to have any business here, I suggest you head out immediately. Madam President will arrive here soon and its best that neither of you are here, for we have important business to attend to.” Graves said in a gravelly tone.

          “Yes, sir. My apologies.” Queenie immediately replied, grabbing Y/N by the hand and leading her back out.

          “Actually, here’s a letter for you, sir.” Y/N suddenly said while pulling out a letter from the small pile she carried.

          “Thank You.” Graves said as she handed him the letter. As a reply, Y/N nodded and walked back to Queenie who waited by the doors.

          He continued to stare at them as they left. He thought about how Miss Y/L/N displayed a calm appearance. She -unlike others- didn’t appear intimidated by him.  She was rather cool and collected around him. Then, he averted his eyes to the letter.

          British Ministry of Magic.

          That was odd. He rarely received any mail from the ministry. Something must be wrong. He thought. As he slipped his finger across the top of the envelope, the doors of the room reopened, and in entered Madam President at last.

          “Madam President.” He greeted.

          “Graves. Forgive my tardiness, things have gotten too hectic for me.” She said to him.

          “I know. I suspect that explains yesterday’s absence.”

          “Not quite. Yesterday I received an urgent call from the British Ministry of Magic. I had to leave and attend a conference they held.”

          “Was the call similar to this one?” Graves said as he held the letter up between his two fingers.

“Yes. They are contacting us separately to speak privately. They are planning on taking over our investigation. They are worried we might fail to recapture Grindelwald on our own.” Madam President replied, a disappointed tone in her voice.

          “Really? They are one’s to talk, seeing as Grindelwald’s escape was their fault in the first place. If it weren’t for their carelessness, we wouldn’t be in this mess!” Graves spoke.

          “Control yourself, Graves.” The woman demanded, her voice monotonous.

          “Forgive me, Madam President.” He said to her.

          “They are well aware it was there carelessness that caused this. I’ve made sure of that. But the wizarding community is growing worried about their safety. If these attacks are not controlled, we will have no choice but to allow them to take over.”

          “Well, it’s not as if I can offer much assistance. You’ve had me sidelined for more than a year now.”

          “That was for your own safety, Graves. You’re lucky you weren’t very much removed from all your positions here. You have no idea how much I had to do to prevent that from happening.” She said calmly.

          “And I thank you, Madam President. But don’t you think it’s been long enough. I took my time to come back, I was given the greenlight by the council to come back, and I’ve respected my distance from the field. If my work inside the headquarters has shown something, it’s the fact that I am more than able to be present in a working environment, let alone to perform my duties as an Auror.” Graves stated, his voice practically pleading.

          “I know. I’ve kept a close eye on you and you’ve proven yourself. Still, I can’t just let you out in the field. You’ll have to attend to some of the Auror training, to get you back in shape; set in motion your performance.”

          “Training?” Graves questioned, his face contorting an unpleasant emotion.

          “Yes, Graves. You may train with Julius when you feel comfortable. He shall then report your performance to me, and I’ll decide when you may finally step out. Given your talents I’m sure you won’t disappoint; you’ll be in the field in no time.” Madam told him, her voice straight and never faltering.

          “Auror Training commences today. Should I be present?” He asked her.

          “Yes. Keep an eye on the new-comers. Make sure to assist Julius in the final decisions. We need the best of the best if we intend on putting an end to Grindelwald.” She said and then looked towards Graves, “What of the recent applicants?”

          “They seem sure of what they want. We actually welcomed a female yesterday. She’s young, but shows to have a future as an Auror.” Graves answered.

          “A woman? At last, I was beginning to worry we wouldn’t have any more female Aurors. The lack of applicants showed that. But, if she shows some promise as you state, then we have nothing to worry about.” She smirked at Graves, then she began to head towards the exit. “Thank you, for meeting with me, director. Make sure you work with Julius.”

          Graves didn’t say a word as the President left. His face showed a mixture of disappointment and determination. While he was glad he’ll be able to assume his position as lead Auror, he wasn’t content with the fact that he had to train.

As if I were an applicant. He thought. Still, I have no other choice but this. He decided he will do whatever he could to be the man he once was, and he will prove that not just to the President, but the entire council as well.  

At long last, it was the afternoon. Y/N had been anxious since midday for the time to arrive. She didn’t know what to expect now that the Auror training would finally take place. She had Queenie accompany her and show her where the Auror Office was located. The entire trip there was very silent, neither Y/N nor Queenie spoke. All she could do was think about how she might fail to prove herself. Yet, as she thought this, she felt Queenie squeeze her hand comfortingly. All Y/N could do was thank her through her thoughts. When they arrived to the offices, they saw a couple of gentlemen spread around the room. They all looked at them as they strutted inside, but quickly returned to what they were doing. Some had a conversation among themselves, and others just stood there, as if waiting for something. Both Y/N and Queenie were confused as to why everyone was standing around, so they decided to ask one of the gentlemen that stood alone in a corner of the room.

“Hi, honey! Do you know what’s going on?” Queenie asked the man who had his back turned to them. When he heard Queenie’s question, he turned around and looked at both women.

“Hi. Everyone’s just waiting for the trainer to arrive. We’ve yet to know where we’re supposed to go.” The man answered in an appealing voice.

Queenie leaned in towards Y/N and whispered, “That explains why everyone’s mind is on Mr. Weaver…”

“Julius Weaver?” Y/n questioned.

“Yeah. I guess he’s who will be training this time around. You know him?”

“Sort of.”

Queenie wondered how Y/N knew such a critically acclaimed Auror, but she decided not press the issue. She didn’t want to question her too much. Suddenly, she heard the thoughts of the gentleman they had approached, and she decided to introduce Y/N and herself.

“I’m sorry, sweetie. It’s nice to meet you. My name is Queenie, and this here is Y/N.” Queenie spoke spontaneously.

“It’s nice to meet you, Queenie and Y/N.” The man said as he extended his hand to Y/N. “My name is James Henry.” He added shyly.

Y/N shook his hand and smiled. “Nice to meet you, James.” As she spoke, she took a minute to study him. He was quite tall, and fairly built. He wore a creamy button down shirt, with its sleeves rolled up to his elbows. It went well with his brown trousers that were held by a pair of red suspenders.

Unexpectedly, the doors of the Auror office burst open. In struts an impeccably dressed man, all dressed in black, passing every single person in the room, without so much as a stare. He abruptly stops in front of a door in between a set of book shelves, opens it and steps inside.

As everyone stares blankly at the door, Queenie whispers to Y/N, “That’s Mr. Weaver.”

“I know.” Is all she says before she begins to walk towards the door. Queenie steps closely behind her and the rest of the gentlemen follow.

When she opens the door and steps in, she is blown away by what she sees. The room is absolutely ginormous. A wide-open field of marble floor rests underneath her feet. On each wall, a series of wooden bleachers stand, up to half of the room, and at the end in a small corner was another door. Y/N continued to step inside slowly, and stood near the bleachers on the right side of the room. Queenie, who was just behind her, climbs to sit near where Y/N is. As the others walk inside, their trainer stands on the other side of the room with his back to them. His wand is out and he appears to be summoning a heavy wooden doll. He begins to walk towards them, the doll trailing behind him.

“Afternoon. I am Julius Weaver, Senior Auror.” He states as he finally stands in front of the bunch. The doll holts behind him and he faces the group, “This is the Target Room. Throughout the following weeks, we shall meet here to take forth the training. Any and all practices of magic are to be done here. The room is open to you all, as long as you fulfill your primarily given duties in the headquarters. Questions?”

The entire group remained silent as they nodded their heads.

“Very well. Might I remind you that not all of you will be assigned Aurors, so I suggest you really demonstrate your skills throughout the course of this training. Today, I will have you all face Sabina, our dear practice doll. Individually you will all step up and perform a blocking spell. Once you’ve done so, I will give you the opportunity to impress me by taking on Sabina here. Let’s begin.” Weaver stated as he scurried aside to give the others space.

Slowly, one by one, each trainee stepped up to the challenge. Some had difficulty blocking the doll, seeing as she was faster than they expected. Others barely managed to flick their wands before she sent them flying across the room. Y/N was getting quite nervous as her turn approached quickly. As she watched the others face Sabina, at the end of the room was a silent Graves, laid back, watching everyone as they performed. Nobody had noticed him when came through the door in the corner of the room and quickly sat in one of the seats of the bleachers. He thought about how much work Julius had on his hands with these trainee’s.

Suddenly, James was called and he stared at Y/N with a timid expression. She smiled at him and he proceeded to the center of the room.

“Ready. Begin.” Weaver commanded.

The target doll began to move across the room, James following her movements. Out of nowhere she shot at him. He moved his left arm over his body, creating a transparent shield. Then, we he tried to hit the doll back, his spell only graced her right arm.

“Hmm. Must work on your aim, Mr. Henry.” Weaver commented.

“Yes, sir.” Said a deflated James.

“Up next, Miss Y/L/N. Come on up.”

Hearing the name, Graves straightened his relaxed posture. He leaned forward in his seat, and watched as Y/N stepped to the center of the room. Y/N looked at the doll, and then looked to Queenie. She smiled brightly at her and waved. Y/N went back to the doll and waited.

“Ready. Begin.” Weaver ordered, and soon enough both figures moved across the room.

Y/N observed the dolls actions as she anticipated the attack. Her steps were firm on the ground, and her watchful eyes never faltered. Just then, Sabina performed an attack at Y/N. She abruptly stopped and flicked her right arm in front of her body.

“Protego.” She said quietly, and deflected the charm. Once safe, Y/N flicked her arm further, pointing her wand at the doll, “Bombarda Maxima!”

The doll erupted into tiny pieces that flew around the room. Queenie clapped enthusiastically, smiling quite brightly. When everyone stared at her, she immediately stopped and bowed her head.

“Very impressive, Miss Y/L/N.” Weaver claimed.

Y/N looked at the man and only nodded. She then skirted over to the where the rest of the group stood. Julius proceeded to stand in front of them.

“That is everyone. Unfortunately, the session must end for I have some business to tend to. I recommend you continue familiarizing yourselves with your morning posts and responsibilities. You are all dismissed.”

Instantly, one by one they all shuffled out of the room. The last to leave are Y/N and Queenie and suddenly, Weaver calls.

“It’s very nice to finally have you here, Miss Y/L/N.”

“Sir?” She says. Weaver then moves towards her.

“Last I saw you, you assisted our investigation to find our missing colleague. I’m afraid I never extended my gratitude for your help, so thank you.” As he states his gratitude, Graves listens in carefully.

“Anything I can do to help, sir.” Y/N stated.

“It really is nice to have you here. I assume your mother persuaded you to finally join us?”

“That she did, sir.”

“Swell. Welcome, then.” Weaver told her.

“Thank you.” Y/N added, and turned to walk towards Queenie who waited by the door.

Once the girls left, Graves eased himself over to Julius. “You picking favorites already?” He said as he lowly pointed to the door.

“No. But that one holds promise as an Auror.”

“So, you are choosing favorites.” Graves stated and smirked at the man.

“Ha! Jealous, are we? Afraid a female will take your place as renowned Auror?”

“Don’t be ridiculous. And what if she does? I have nothing against exceeding women.”

“Oh, Graves. Always the gentleman.”

“Thank you. I- uh, overheard your conversation. She assisted an investigation?” Graves asked Julius.

“She very much did. Yours to be exact. She deciphered many of Grindelwald’s clues and statements when we held him here. I believe we owe it all to her. She’s a bright young woman.”

“How did you find her?”

“I’ve known of her talents since she was in Ilvermorny. I met her on one of my school visits. I got to experience what a brilliant witch she is, and recommended she become an Auror. At long last she did.”

“Hm…”

“Something the matter?”

“No. I actually wanted to talk to you about something else.”

“No, worries. I’ve very much been informed of your requirements for the field. We may begin tomorrow, after I finish with the trainee’s.”

“Excellent. Thank You, Julius.”

“Not a problem. Now, I must see to my meeting. Clean this up will you.” Weaver commanded as he pointed to the mess of wood in the room.

Then, Julius was gone, and Graves was left alone in the Target Room. He thought about how Y/N was in part responsible for finding him when he was kidnapped. He knew very little about his investigation, much more than he imagined. Still, he was very amazed by Y/N. He wondered if she knew it was his investigation she assisted. He thought of how her performance was quite impressive, there was much to see from her. Graves was looking forward to see just what else she was capable of. A little too much for his own liking.

Those areas are known to have gangs, high unemployment, welfare dependency, poor schools, housing and health services. Everything in this binned off, trolleyed country is only in car-distance, as per usual, and OMG what an infested shit'ole - rat's, wasps everywhere, ant's nests, aliens from outer space and Zombie's everywhere!! Progress is so slow in B'ham, is Sloppy Seconds therefore by dinosaurs? The main urban sprawl High Streets are caked with Zombie's walking up and down all day with their hand's out, looking for something (for nothing) -the nanny-stater's have the wrong shit-trousers on all day with only dick-pence to offer anyone. I think to become a nurse you have to own the feeling and be the best nurse you can be. So what started nursing? How did it become a thing? Who made it all happen? That is what my blog is all about. So guys come with me to the waverider and buckle your seat belts and we're gonna go back in time and know who made it all happen. In essence, the nursing profession has very much been around since the beginning of time though has drastically evolved over the course of history. Today nurses are one of the most important professions within the health care industry and are learned in a wide range of occupational duties that are utilized within a variety of settings throughout the world. Here's an in-depth history of nursing and how it's progressed to the state where it's at today. Beginnings of the Nursing Profession It is believed that the first recorded aspects of nursing place the inception of the profession during the height of the Roman empire, around 300 A.D. It was during this time that the Empire sought to place a hospital within every town under its rule. As such, there were many “nurses” during that time that assisted in in-patient medical care within the newly created hospitals, alongside doctors. As the Roman empire became the Byzantine empire, they further innovated within the field by creating 2 fully-developed hospitals within the great city of Constantinople, which housed both male and female nurses. These nurses were known as hypourgoi and helped to push forward nursing on a more global scale. However, it’s important to note that nursing became much more popularized in Europe during the middle ages, due primarily to its spread by the Catholic church. Nursing in the Middle Ages When taking a glimpse at nursing in the Middle Ages, there were a myriad of advancements and innovations that were implemented within the nursing industry during these years, helping to form some of the roots of modern nursing. During this period of time, the industry was still largely based on religion, with the vast majority of available nurses consisting of nuns and even monks. Hospitals functioned in a myriad of ways, housing lepers and refugees among the typical sick and injured patients. It was due to this that a nurse’s role within the hospital involved a wider range of duties than may be seen today. Around the late 500’s to early 600’s, the first Spanish hospital was created in Merida, Spain, with many of its nurses being supplied by the Catholic church. They were explicitly told to care for all of the sick, no matter their nation of origin or the religion they belonged to. While many of these European hospitals began to fall into disrepair in the 800’s, Emperor Charlemagne came to the decision to restore and equip these hospitals with all of the latest medical equipment of that time. The Emperor also demanded that hospitals should be attached to every cathedral and monastery within Europe, which helped to spur demand for even more nurses. It was during the dawn of the 10th and 11th centuries that nursing began to expand, due primarily to a number of different rulings within Europe. For one, monasteries started housing hospitals inside their premises, as well as a separate infirmary, though this was only to be used by those that identified as religious. Within these monasteries, nurses were made to provide patients with any type of service that they asked for or required, even outside of general health care services. This model of nursing became increasingly popular throughout many countries, primarily those of Germany and France, providing the general outline for how nurses are expected to treat their patients today. Nurses were often asked to provide assistance and care by traveling to neighboring areas in order to make house calls. Not only did many monasteries house hospitals, it was also around this time that each church was required to have a hospital contained within the structure. However, these churches were more difficult to maintain than their monastery counterparts, due in large part to the fact that monasteries existed within the countryside, while churches were often set in the city, meaning that more people would require the services of the nurses and doctors. As such, the priest within each church was required to assist with the hospital that resided within their church. This proved successful in both the short and long term and allowed Germany to craft well over 150 hospitals between the years of 1200 and 1600, expanding the role of nurses within Europe dramatically. The mid 1000’s also saw a rise in what are known as charitable houses, as they were brought over to England by the Normans during their conquest and eventual capture of that very country. This type of health care facility was different from those of churches and monasteries, due in large part to nurses providing certain richer customers with alms and other medicines. The alms, in particular, were utilized in burial preparations, thus becoming highly sought after. This style of aid was distinctly new from anything seen in the past and seemed to usher in a new era of nursing. Unfortunately, as Europe entered the beginning of the 17th century, nursing as a whole became exceedingly diminished for a wide variety of reasons. For one, most monasteries were shut down during the Protestant reformation, as well as the hospitals within them. The nuns that had been working as nurses were made leave the profession and stay at home. It was due to this that nursing largely stagnated between the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe, as there were simply not enough hospitals available. However, in the few areas of Europe in which the Protestant rule had not spread and Catholics still retained control, the role of nurses remained largely the same, diminished only in numbers. In fact, those that practiced nursing were beginning to develop new services as well, particularly the act of offering care to those within the estate of their patron’s. While staying at the estate, these nurses would often be required to perform the duties typically undertaken by apothecaries, physicians and surgeons. While nursing faced more tumultuous times during the years to come, nurses remained in demand more than ever and were often tasked with administering certain health care services to patients that might have been wary of the care provided by actual doctors. That being said, the roots of modern nursing began to take shape in the 18th and 19th centuries. During these years, Britain and North America were at the forefront of innovation within the industry, though with each introducing different forms of nursing to the market. Florence Nightingale and the Introduction to Modern Nursing When looking at the rise of modern nursing within Europe, it’s important to note that Florence Nightingale helped to change the nature of the profession forever. Around the early to late 1900’s, nursing was becoming more important than ever, as nurses were needed on the front lines of the many wars being waged, from the Crimean War to the Civil War. Nurses were sent to attend to the sick and wounded soldiers in battle. Florence Nightingale began her illustrious nursing career as a nurse within the Crimean War that took place in the mid 1850’s, tending to injured soldiers on the battlefield. During this time, deaths from injuries were commonplace, due to the lack of general hygiene and the huge amount of fatal infections that resulted from these wounds. Upon encountering this, Nightingale asked for and received aid from the British government that allowed for much better hygiene throughout the battlefield and nearby hospital. It was due to this that the rate of death from infections dropped drastically in but a short period of time. Throughout the rest of her life, Nightingale advocated for sanitary living conditions for patients, as well as providing similar designs to be implemented within hospitals, an ideal that has spread throughout the entirety of the nursing profession throughout the following years. Modern Nursing Within Europe It was because of the influence of Florence Nightingale that nursing as a profession became what it is today, though both Europe and the U.S. offered different advancements throughout the period leading up until now. As for Europe, the nursing profession flourished when, in 1860, Nightingale opened the very first nursing school in London, which was known as the Florence Nightingale School for Nurses. This helped to pave the way for more and more schools being founded and opened officially for prospective nurses to receive actual training and education for the field they were entering, thus providing roots for modern nursing. While Florence Nightingale is one of the most popular nurses in history, it is not to be believed that she was the only notable figure in the field of nursing. In fact, there were a few others that helped to provide advancements to nursing in the 1800’s. For instance, Clarissa Harlowe Barton was a nurse who founded the American Red Cross soon after the Civil War, while Linda Richards and Agnes Elizabeth Jones helped to create a number of nursing schools throughout the U.S. and Japan during the mid to late 1800’s. These women worked tirelessly to provide high quality health care to anyone that needed it, providing the model for nursing that still exists today. Within Europe, Germany, France and Britain were at the forefront of bringing nursing into the modern age. Germany brought back what are known as deaconesses in the early 1800’s. A deaconess is basically a nurse in charge of providing health care for other women in the area. Despite the fact that deaconesses had all but vanished for a few centuries before then, they were brought back by Theodor Fliedner in 1836 when he opened a deaconess motherhouse situated nearby the Rhine river. This move allowed for the floodgates to open in Germany, popularizing this form of nursing. By the dawn of the 20th century, there were reportedly well over 5,000 deaconesses in all of Europe, primarily Germany. This number swelled to nearly 50,000 by the late 1950’s. In fact, deaconesses were even found to be located in other countries as well, such as the U.S. and Canada. As for France, they also seemed keen in contributing to the nursing profession in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. In France, nursing was still largely centered around religion. Within the nearly 1,500 hospitals located all throughout France, the nursing staff was comprised of well over 10,000 Catholic nuns in 1870. This number increased even moreso in the next 40 years to 15,000. However, at the dawn of the 20th century, the French government moved to create a system wherein hospitals were more heavily secularized, in order for hospitals to receive the proper support that they needed from outside of the church. This allowed for a better quality of care for all patients. The first World War gave a huge boom to nursing within the country. While many of the nurses that joined the ranks during this time were untrained and seemed to leave the profession not long after the war ended, it brought about a larger focus on nursing by France that was missing before then, which was further signified by the offering of a national diploma in nursing in the year 1922. It’s also important to note how important nursing came to be within all military situations over the years. Queen Victoria of England began to assign Military General Hospitals to be made in the 1860’s, starting with that of the Royal Victoria Hospital. This move was largely brought about because of the necessity for nursing within the Crimean War. These military hospitals were developed solely to provide care to soldiers and military patients. As such, many nurses throughout Europe started being appointed directly to these hospitals around that time. However, one thing that still stood out was that many of the available nurses at the time were simply untrained, in both the profession and in how to deal with the exceedingly adverse conditions brought about during the time of war. While the health care being administered was useful and still helped to save lives, it was becoming clear that nurses would need to undergo some sort of training to become better equipped to handle any type of condition. Modern Nursing in the U.S. Nursing within the United States took a decidedly different path than in similar countries. Due to the absence of a stronghold of Catholicism within America, the nursing field was not comprised of nuns. Nursing officially began in the early 1700’s when the first almshouse was opened in Philadelphia. However, many of the hospitals that were created in the ever-expanding United States throughout the next 2 centuries were largely derived because of the fear from local governments of diseases spreading to the more wealthy population. Therefore, they did not receive the proper funding that would have allowed for the training of nurses. It should also be noted that the only roles for a nurse within these hospitals during this period of time revolved primarily around tending to the elderly and those with sicknesses, such as the flu and the common cold. These almshouses were rarely equipped to deal with any actual illnesses that needed to be treated immediately. However, most nurses spent their time tending to soldiers wounds within the Civil War, as well as joining the American Red Cross soon after the war. It wasn’t until the dawn of the 20th century that actual progress and modernization within the field of nursing began to take place. There were a number of factors that contributed to the general rise in nursing. The first of these revolved around the state of the nursing schools that had already existed at this time. While these schools were somewhat useful at training nurses, they were solely controlled by nurses. Although this did have its advantages, they did not have enough resources to properly innovate and advance the overall profession. This was changed in 1900 when schools became controlled by hospitals instead, allowing for a more hands-on approach to training, which proved highly useful in giving prospective nurses the necessary tools to train efficiently. Before this, nurses-in-training would only learn through the medical books that they were taught with. This change in schooling allowed for a bigger emphasis to be placed on earning a nursing degree, which paved the way for a total of 294,000 trained nurses, in the late 1920’s, in comparison to around 150,000 untrained nurses. At this time, most of these nurses were women. One of the more ambitious nursing programs brought to America was Frontier Nursing Service, which was founded by Mary Breckinridge. This organization was designed to provide nursing care to poor citizens living in the more rural areas of the U.S., further expanding the scope and definition of all that nursing entailed. Post WWI Nursing in Europe and U.S. Many of the modern advancements in nursing took place after WWI and into WWII, when technology was starting to take a bigger role in the world. At the dawn of WWI, Britain’s nursing presence was striking low, with just over 10,000 nurses enrolled in the 2 premier military nursing services in the area, which included the Princess Mary’s Royal Air Force Nursing Service and Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service. The nurses enrolled in this service were sorted into Staff Nurses, Sister, Principal Matron and Matron-in-Chief. Despite the low presence of nurses in Britain at this time, the war created a resurgence throughout the country. For example, at the beginning of the war, it is estimated that there were just over 2,200 members within Queen Alexandra’s Nursing Service, while this number ballooned to well over 10,000 nurses by the conclusion of the war. Within the U.S. and other countries, WWII proved even more beneficial in regards to how it pushed respective governments to provide more support for nursing. Within Britain, nurses involved in the QAIMNS service mentioned previously would travel with soldiers to the battlefront of every campaign Britain was involved in during the war. While nurses were not commissioned officers at the onset of the war, they were soon given the ability to gain rank, up to Brigadier, due to the fact that they largely faced the same horrific conditions as the soldiers themselves. The nursing profession within the United States became as popular as it is today due primarily to its huge focus within WWII. Many women from around the nation were desperate to give care to the soldiers that were fighting across the seas. As such, the entire prospect became an attractive one, as nurses were being called heroes more than ever during this period. This led to thousands upon thousands of women volunteering for the cause. Despite the fact that many nurses went in untrained, they received a wealth of specialty training while overseas by dealing firsthand with the atrocities they were presented with on the front. As such, they brought home a large tool-set of skills after the war that were valuable within the medical profession. The government took notice of this and placed millions of dollars into the ever-expanding healthcare industry, just at the moment when the technological age was beginning, allowing for an increase in medical innovations. For instance, more and more schools began to offer additional nursing courses that would lead to licensed and registered nurses, as well as Masters and Doctorate nursing programs in the 1950’s and 70’s respectively. The American Nurses Association also saw the publishing of an American Journal of Nursing, which allowed both nurses and doctors to stay up-to-date on the latest studies and research pertaining to the field. The 20th century also paved the way for a larger and more expanded role for nurses, introducing a number of distinct areas in which nurses could specialize in, including such specialty care as orthopedics, trauma, critical care, pediatrics and neonatal nursing. Throughout the years leading up to the current day, nursing also saw a shift away from the typical description of a doctors assistant to performing many of these duties themselves, including everything from performing procedures to prescribing medication. In fact, in today’s industry, nurses can choose to receive training in well over 200 unique healthcare specialties. Common Nursing Jobs in the Current Industry When looking at how the nursing profession has progressed since its inception when nurses were largely Catholic nuns to the bustling industry it is today, it’s important to understand that the reason for this occurring is due primarily to the added specialties that current and prospective nurses could choose to focus in. As nursing is generally all about the care of a person, a nurses duties can cover a large variety of different practices. Some of the most common of these include pediatrics, neonatal, disabilities, women’s health communities, family and orthopedic nursing, among others. This allows for a huge amount of diversity within the field of nursing that never use to be present before the last 50 or so years. Education Required of a Nurse Today While in the late 1800’s and 1900’s, those looking to become nurses would simply go to school and achieve a certification in nursing, it’s now possible to attend nursing school and choose any number of degrees to graduate with. Here’s a small look at what those are. For instance, in the U.S., you can choose to receive a diploma in nursing, which merely requires 3 years of study and a certain amount of hours of hospital-based work. This type of degree is the oldest such nursing degree and has been present since the late 1800’s. Today, students have the added option of choosing to pursue an associate’s degree in nursing, as well as a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or even a doctorate degree in nursing. Each successive degree requires extra years of study, though also gives students better career opportunities within the field of nursing upon graduation, an advantage that only presented itself in the 1960’s and 70’s. Upon obtaining any one of these degree types, students will then have the opportunity of taking a licensure examination and becoming a registered nurse. While the role of nurses in the world has expanded dramatically within the last 2 centuries, it’s clear that nursing will continue to grow into an even more important aspect of the health care industry within the years to come.
