it does make me laugh when general purpose academic advice is like "all citations must be RECENT, if it's over ten years old it's probably been superseded" and it's like. maybe in sciences bro but over here i still regularly have to cite stuff from the 19th century because nobody has written on the topic since

a quick guide as per my tags
"recent" in celtic studies: 21st century
"not that old": author or author's contemporaries theoretically still alive, so like, 1970s onwards?
"a bit dated": 1920s-1960s
"goddammit this is definitely gonna be in german": 1900-1920
"it's whitley stokes isn't it. it's always fucking whitley stokes (with honourable mention to kuno meyer)": 1880-1900
"oh god we're in the Niche Zone": pre 1880, also Good Luck lmao you've gone past the Racism Danger Zone and into a whole other level of dodgy scholarship

#i'm not sure when the racism danger zone ends#(by which i don't mean that once it's ended nothing is racist. some things are definitely still racist#it's just not quite so much the default setting and the acceptable terminology)#the 'racism danger zone' refers to a general approach especially found in comparative mythology corners#especially pre-1930s but unfortunately it continues even after that#and that's how you get the Actual Nazis#celtic studies
