this book I'm reading is leaning really hard into the idea of evil medallions fed by primordial chaos gods that the nobility is using to be awful to the people of the city and what gave the original colonizer power to conquer the continent but like I always feel weird about supernatural explanations for things like systematic injustices. the nobles are horrible because they grew up in a racist social setting that rewarded corrupt behavior and because more generally their entire society is hideously unequal and build upon colonizer supremacy, not because an evil medallion is infecting some of them
