i think the reason why the hardcore austen fans don’t like austenland (2013) is bc the protagonist hits too close to home. nobody likes getting made fun of and in a way, you have to see this (imo, realistic) austen fan be put in a position where her obsession with pride and prejudice isn’t endearing or cool. it’s a hinderance.
she goes to austenland as way to live out a fantasy and get it out of her system and then encounters something else entirely. but it helps her grow up. and it’s sad when she gets home and starts throwing things away but the end when she goes back to austenland with nobley and it shows that she’s still an austen fan at heart but it’s no longer a hindrance on her person. she’s living her own life, not attempting to live someone else’s.
which is why this is such a good austen adaptation because it’s not just a romance, it’s also an adult woman’s coming of age story; which some of austen’s works are.
#the most gifed part of this movie is the bit where she's like--#'im single bc the best men are fictional'--which i feel ppl misinterpret#bc its actually kind of cringey#it's a burn in the moment but then you find out certain ppl are playing parts and nobley y comments were coming fm a place of someone that#was cheated on--like---#it changes things bc she doesnt know whats really going on#anyway--i feel like this movie is not appreciated enough for what it is and gets left out on a lot of austen takes bc its modern#and pokes fun at pride and prejudice fans#when really this movie is borderline a love letter
