British Bats at Home
Cassell's Natural History (VOL. I).
Engraving, 1896.
Online PDF/eBook Link.
LITTLE NOTE, NOT SO IMPORTANT.
Yes, I could take this time to yap about bats and how cool those little creatures are, but (tragically) I won't--and I could promise you that I will in a future post, but I tend to forget </x
(This is more of an apology note, but I will throw a few little facts your way as compensation).
I couldn't find an illustrator (womp, womp). Many sources only listed one of the authors (without proper credit listing them as anything other than writer/editor); therefore, no artist I can list. However, you can still admire the pretty photos while digesting outdated knowledge from this late 19th-century book... though I wouldn't necessarily read the link I gave as the online PDF/eBook edited the original source (this alteration is from 2017)--this is only a discretion if you wanted to consume the original thing. It seemed more that it was changed to fit the site format. Still, they even changed some chapter names, so it could be a mix of both new and old information (all I'm saying is that I didn't go through the book fully... hell, it's long... but I wanted y'all to know in case since the link takes you to a specific point rather than the index where information on the source is listed.
Now time for... drumroll please...

~~~!~!~!~BAT-!~!~!-FACTS~!~!~!~~~
applause
Okay, okay. You can stop clapping now. Please, I'm blushing. Knock it off, omg, I'm serious.
The scientific name for bat is Chiroptera (1779 by Blumenbach).
They are found in every continent besides Antarctica (although imagine them next to a polar bear... how cute would that be?).
Contrary to popular belief, not all bats hibernate. Various species of bat pull a goose, opting to migrate to gather food in warmer climates.
Bats should stay far away from school zones; as the only flying mammal, they tend to reach 60+ mph while zooming in the air. Feel that wind on your face.
One of the snacks they like to munch on are moths (yes, we're closing with a less interesting one; no, I'm not keeping my bat and moth Squishmallows together anymore💀😭).
Click the links above 'n' below to view the full sources (no. 5 has the most in-depth one about pipistrelli).
Thank you for letting me snatch your time! Much love; Kaiti <x
(Oh, and if you want to add anything or know the illustrator, please let me know! I'd love to credit them, despite them being dead and all).
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the common vampire bat mainly poses an airborne threat and that if you ever spotted one approaching, you could try to swat it away. But according to scientists, the species is far more stealthy than this. It is, they say, a “capable runner” and a furtive one. Its ability to scuttle along the ground, on its legs and folded wings, allows it to sneak up on cattle and other prey, which have sometimes included sleeping humans. After this silent approach, it will use its razor sharp teeth to make a small, painless incision. How it processed its food had been something of a mystery. But researchers have now shed light on how the species rapidly draws energy from the blood it laps up, via an experiment that involved getting several bats to spend more than an hour running on a treadmill. Vampire bats are the only mammals that rely exclusively on the blood of other animals for their nutrition. The research revealed that to survive on this highly specialised diet, they rely on an unusual method of extracting energy from the protein it contains. Researchers at the University of Toronto first captured two dozen adult common vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) in Belize. The animals were brought to a laboratory and fed on cows’ blood that had been enriched with two amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. These contained isotopes of carbon that acted as chemical markers. The bats were then placed on a treadmill inside a sealed plastic box. This allowed the researchers to track how much oxygen they were using and how much carbon dioxide they were exhaling, as they ran at speeds of up to about 1.1 mph. Showing significant stamina, most of the bats kept moving for all of the 90-minute experiment. After analysing the carbon isotopes in the exhaled breath, the researchers learnt that they were pulling energy from their recent blood meal, rather than relying on stored fats or sugars as almost all other mammals do. The results indicate that proteins from the blood samples were responsible for as much as 60 per cent of the energy used by the bats as they scampered. In most mammals, running is fuelled by carbohydrates and lipids, while amino acids contribute less than 5-10 per cent of the energy used. The researchers had seen a similar system for extracting energy from protein in the tsetse fly, a bug that also feeds on blood and is responsible for spreading sleeping sickness in Africa. “We found vampire bats can fuel most of their running with amino acids in a blood meal eaten only minutes before, just like some insects,” said Kenneth Welch, of the University of Toronto, a co-author of the paper. Michael Hiller, a researcher at the Loewe Centre for Translational Biodiversity Genomics in Frankfurt, who was not involved with the paper, told The New York Times that the ability to draw energy from amino acids in less than ten minutes was “unparalleled in mammals”. The findings were published in the journal Biology Letters, which is published by the Royal Society.
wait okay I actually have a weirdly specific question combining your Clint knowledge and also your Equine Specialist knowledge
what kind/breed of horse do you think would be best for Clint for like semi-long distance travel (like a few hundred miles) and how far do you think they could get in a day of travel?
OOOOOOOH THIS IS A FUN QUESTION
So a general rule of thumb for horses is 20% of their weight is what we can put on their back without there being injuries, discomfort, etc.
Now because Clint is a big dude he won’t be able to get on some fast little speedster without side effects. Clint is canonically 6’3 and 230 lbs so while speed and distance would have worked awesome on an Arabian he’s just a bit on the too big side to be able to get away with riding one for long distance.
There are horse breeds that are considered lighter rides for heavier folks, like Mustangs, Quarter, and American Paint horses, but you’re going to have to be looking for the larger of the breeds. Not impossible but we are in a fake scenario so let’s go for a different bread that’s bigger. You’re going to have to work into the weight of saddle, gear, etc so we aren’t just throwing 230 lbs on that horse! Western saddles can range from 25-60 lbs. Plus whatever else he is dragging along with him so we are gonna say he has about 300+ lbs on this horse.
To avoid discomfort for the horse I’m gonna settle with a heavier breed but we are gonna have to give up speed for this. So hopefully Clint isn’t trying to go anywhere fast. Let’s go with the classic Clydesdale! These are BIIIIIIG babies, like 16-19 hands high big. They can get up to 2,000 lbs and they’re built for heavy farming and pulling large loads. BUT that’s not the only thing they are good for.
They’re actually incredible trail horses. Why? Because they’re so large their gates tend to absorb impact and so the rides are super smooth, which means if he needs to fire off from his bow? That’s gonna be a hell of a steady shot, that and they don’t spook easy. Why would you when you’re that big, right? They’re very gentle and docile horses too, with the sweetest temperaments. The ones I’ve been around have been like gentle giants. Even when they took food from my hand and their little whiskers tickled my palm, they never once got over excited and accidentally nipped or got rough.
Now the downside? You’re going to be giving up speed. They’re BIG so they’re just not going to move like an Arabian would. I believe the fastest recorded Clydesdale was at 20 mph.
Now just because a horse can move like that doesn’t mean you should be pushing them like that. On average you shouldn’t be pushing your horse friend more than 25-35 miles a day UNLESS otherwise trained. We don’t want them getting hurt and while Clydesdales are STONKY they aren’t invincible and they gotta eat, ESPECIALLY traveling long distance and boyyyyyy can they eat.
Is the Clydesdale a bit of an over-reach for a 230 lbs male? Maybe, but I’ve seen some nasty horse injuries because of underestimation and I’d rather be safe than sorry. A big horse for a big boy.
Fiido Titan - 248 miles ultra-long range Fat Tire Ebikes
I think that my grandpa got this to go and it's pill and Preston says grandpa-in-law too. And that's him and I believe them because they said they're going to work on it and here it is. This is an outstanding I have so sick of trying this stupid f****** battery. I don't know that far either because I can't if I had a decent road tire which is really the one that's on my lectric and it's heavy duty and it's like 120 steel bands which is much more than most and I trust a girl further and I put in the the green stuff and it makes it so you can go along the rise with confidence and with the knob is you don't get too many flats and it would be a confidence thing and I like 250 mi a charge and I'll go places and I'm sure I would increase the speed on it and the thing was fly and it's probably a way around it and really they need to put out these books they used to do it in the eighties they slowed in the 90s cuz everyone was a good day at least put out cheap things cheating how to change your car speeds how to adjust your lights the way you want and things like that to get around rules and stuff so you need to cheat sheet for this or cheap book for this ebike and other ebikes but right here this is really good for anything I would need it for as the original battery goes pretty far I already have that in the white bike but with three batteries it goes very far and mine with two batteries that are long distance goes real far and here The Price is Right it's like 2100 bucks and it goes 250 miles and it's a 20 mph or 28 mile an hour with pedaling and it's crazy that's really good that's awesome and the batteries are not huge
Zues
It's about damn time you get the thing and you don't know how to tie it in you try to they always get messed up now the bikes will have systems to tie in and so you can run one or two batteries it's ridiculous this is so crazy our son finally has two batteries if he gets money he's going to buy two new long range batteries and put the other one back on he has more confidence and he can go further it's really a matter of on doing it right and those tires don't get flats easy it's much better than what he got no but somebody was trying a lot of stuff to do that and they are going to get messed up you don't need novice to ride these things and you're stupid Trump you need to be killed you're such a hose bag and what a loser it's way too much for a young person we're applying tons of pressure because of it and it doesn't do a damn thing but really you and your bosses. And we're going to have to do something I'm sick of this negative stuff too I see it all the time everywhere and it's just not going to do. This guy in Trump by the way just to grind it in a little and he and she want to run this ebike store and he could have done all this stuff and it is doing anything he's just making people angry and miserable with this battery you can take the limiter off and people won't know ever and you can ride around if you're in trouble you can hit it and you will like 50 or 60 miles an hour and you need the batteries cuz it's only good at that speed for like 10 minutes but yeah you can get away we can get out of a danger zone and it is required these days everybody needs it and our son needs it and he needs the extended batteries but boy he's got it already he's got two when you put them on there it goes like 150 miles on throttle when you're running it normal light about 13 miles an hour and if you take the limiter off and with the tires the way they are we have some people saying it goes 70 mph with the extended batteries but only for about 10 minutes but still you're you're pretty far away at that time so we're going to help him get some things
Tesla Delivers About a Dozen Stainless Steel Cybertruck Pickups as It Tries to Fix Production Woes
I'm really excited. Tesla, the famous electric truck company, just started giving people their cool, new Cybertruck pickups. They handed out about twelve of them.
This is a big deal for Tesla. They've been working hard to fix problems with making trucks and start selling this super new electric one. Everyone has been super excited about the Cybertruck since they first showed it because it looks like it comes from the future and is supposed to do really well on the road.
The Cybertruck's Bold Promise
I first saw the weird Tesla Cybertruck in November 2019. Elon Musk, the big boss of Tesla, showed it off. It's made of steel that doesn't bend and is all pointy, and this grabbed people really hard; loads and loads wanted to buy one, therefore they signed up before it even started being made.
Key features of the Tesla Cybertruck include:
Stainless Steel Body:
Tesla says their Cybertruck's outer shell can really take a hit and not scratch or dent. Now, funny enough, it's made from this super-tough 30X steel kind that I've never talked about before – you know, heretofore. It's pretty wild.
Outstanding Performance:
Depending on the variant, the Cybertruck offers impressive acceleration, with 0-60 mph times ranging from under 6 seconds to just over 2.9 seconds for the high-end tri-motor version.
Electric Range:
You already know Tesla's electric trucks go far. The Cybertruck is just as good. Even though the moon looks closer at night, the best Cybertruck zooms past 500 miles without needing a new charge.
Towing Capacity:
I'm amazed, no joke, by this super cool truck's muscle. It can pull unbelievably heavy things, like over 14,000 pounds! It's made to be handy, not just for families but for work stuff too.
Production Challenges
I couldn't wait to see Tesla's new Cybertruck hit the streets, but making something so huge out of stainless steel turned out to be way harder than they thought. And trying to fit its wacky look into how they usually build cars caused more headaches. Now its arrival is going to be way later than anyone guessed.
I heard that Tesla is starting to send out a few Cybertrucks. They're doing this to learn from the first ones they make. By only sending out a little at first, they can make tiny tweaks along the way, check that the trucks are really good, and hear what the first drivers say about them, thereby making their future trucks even better.
The Significance of the Delivery
You're getting those first Cybertrucks from Tesla and, believe it or not, it shows that they won’t let tough problems stop them from making new things that no other car company made before. It’s a big deal because it makes people think hard about how electric trucks and cars can change the whole car making game. And while the big car makers are starting to make more electric cars and trucks, Tesla is way ahead, always doing wild new stuff and coming up with smart ideas. This is a pretty big moment.
Looking Ahead
I just got a really cool surprise. Tesla is making electric trucks, and they sent out the first twelve Cybertrucks. This is like a peek at what's coming next for their big truck thing. People really want smart trucks that don't need gas, and sending these trucks out shows Tesla can make what folks are after.
We're not quite at the whole making-tons-of-Trucks stage yet, but it’s starting. No doubt getting these first few trucks out is huge, and for me, unpacking all this is still unbelieveably awesome. More than just trucks, you know, it’s a big step toward the future of how we might all drive around.
You get this? The electric truck called Cybertruck, by that car shop Tesla, just gave out almost 12 trucks; it shows they're moving forward after some tough snag with making a lot of them and it stresses how the shop really sticks to launching new ways for cars to move without gas. A ton of cars pulling away from oil and turning electric is the new way, and that fancy and different truck Tesla made; might just shake up how we all get around big time, huh?
Golden Eye's
Chapter 4
The room they were in was too bright. The smell of sanitizer was overpowering as dark spots danced across her vision. Squinting provided little clarity as Seven flew for her life. The anklet she was wearing sent a sharp shock up her body every time she stopped moving or touched the ground. Lupi chased her around the aerial obstacle course in a frenzy while Seven flew through rings and around poles in an effort to dodge.
Seven had been doing these kinds of tests for hours, jumping, running, lifting, fighting, and now flying. And despite all of it this might be where she breaks. Her head and heart were pounding in unison, tail aching and wings about to give out they forced themselves to go further then they thought they could. Her abdomen was sore from being held up so that she didn't lose balance during flight. But she couldn't stop now.
You stop, you'll disappoint them
The fans surrounding the room made flying slightly easier but it didn't slow down the Lupi one bit. A red one leaped and managed to graze her leg. Pain registered in her mind as she closed her wings and dropped. Before she could drop more than two feet she opened one wing and twisted round to land a solid kick to its jaw. Seven doesn't know how long this went on for, she only knew that she was to retaliate for every injury she got. Her endurance was good but she was almost at her limit. She didn't know how long this could go on for.
Disappointments die
She kept repeating this mantra in her head in order to find the adrenaline to keep her from passing out
FINALLY. She thought as she let herself go. Gravity pulled her down rough but she was too relieved by the lack of movement to care. She sat still, taking deep lungfuls of air trying to regain control of her limbs. The black dots were the only thing she registered before she allowed her eyes to shut and her body to rest on the white lithium floor
Beep
"Its diving speed was estimated to be 47.48 mph, level flight capped at 22.95 mph"
"In kilometers?"
"76.41 and 36.93 kph"
Voices echoed around them but they only got bits and pieces as they lay dazed on the floor.
"Heart rate spiked 40% through the run but leveled itself out of the remaining 60%. Incredible"
More numbers, more footsteps, Seven was far too tired to care. Several arms grabbed her and placed her rather roughly on her back, a pain shot through her tail as she landed on the stiff bed. They readjusted her wings to secure them into the restraints on either side of her head. It still wasn't comfortable with her tail but it was an improvement. After being fully secured she was rolled down a long hallway and into a spacious office. An entire dedicated to what looked like a mirror but was probably a one way glass pane. On the other side was a long table of instruments for the various medical tests she would be enduring today.
Leaving her alone in the room, she began to feel drowsy, her eyelids as heavy as her wings. She should probably rest, the medical tests certainly weren't as strenuous as the physical ones but they were arguably longer. Especially with Dr. Jinn calling the shots. Ignoring the dread setting in her stomach, she closed her eyes and allowed herself a few more minutes of rest.
《~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~》
Alder watched from the other side of the viewing window as the Eagle slept on the cot. In a few minutes, he had an important meeting to attend, but for now, he had something more important to attend to besides the flask in his hand.
"I-I don't think you're allowed to d-drink that, sir." With an eye roll, he turned to face the goat intern that was still hanging around him. Taking another quick swig of vodka, he once again puts the flask away and addresses Caleb once again.
"Lesson number four, don't give orders to people you can't look in the eyes" was his casual response, glaring at the small boy. And allowing a pleased smile on his face when he flinched.
"Now I have a very special task for you, you remember Ada don't you?" When he nodded he pulled a piece of paper out of his coat pocket and continued speaking "I need you to deliver this to her and tell her it's effective immediately. Understood?"
He gently took the paper with a nod glancing at all the legal jargon and fancy signatures.
"What is it?" His voice was meeker than he'd meant it but he couldn't help but be intimidated by Dr Jinn, especially when he gave such a blank stare in response to his question. "If you must know a special someone is getting quite the promotion, now be a good little assistant and do as you're told" Jinn replied sharply, then punctuated with another sip of his flask.
No longer wanting to be in the doctor's presence, he took the paper and jogged down the hallway as fast as his legs could carry him. Leaving Alder alone to gather his thoughts, excitement gathering in his gut as he relished in how interesting things were about to get. Letting his grin rest on his face he wandered down the hall reveling in the chaos that he knew would ensue.
《~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~》
"Good evening Seven" A cheery voice rang out, drawing Seven from her light slumber. She blinked the sleep from her eyes as she looked to the door. A rush of energy burst in her accompanied by a sharp toothed bright smile. "Chazzie!"  Her voice was still hoarse but the enthusiasm was clearly portrayed.
The Beige skin male smiled back at the restrained girl while brushing the blonde bowl cut out of his eyes. "That's Dr. Oswale to you missy" he mirrored her enthusiasm as he approached the bed and began to undo the restraints. She chuckled as she carefully sat up.
"Y'know the drill, wings and tail out, don't try anything funny" he coupled that last part with his iconic smile. Hopping off the bed she walked towards him and once she was close enough to the glass Seven extended their wings as far as they could go. The sharp brown feathers flexed and flared with the motion, trembling slightly from exhaustion.
Kneeling down he began to measure. 14.2 ft across, which was… he'd convert it later he decided as he moved to the tail. Around 3.5 ft top to bottom. Seven's wings were still growing, feathers looking healthy despite the less than ideal conditions. Now he needed feathers for examination and stress testing.
Plucking feathers of various sizes Seven didn't flinch once. Wondering if they'd fallen asleep on him they looked over the wings and into the mirror, watching them stare at the reflection. They didn't see their reflection very often, it made sense that they were distracted. Olive skin and umber coils, they could pass as a cute kid if not for the other features. The lack of outer ear around the ear hole, the feathers lining the face, neck, and majority of the body. Teeth sharp to pierce skin and bone. Dark scales lining the legs and 4 clawed toes.
Then there were her eyes, piercing gold eyes coupled with the Tapetum Lucidum that gave them their greenish glow in low light and protected by a nictitating membrane acting as a third eyelid. She looked so very human yet so very alien at the same time. He could only wonder what she'd be like without Cadmu's interference. Probably dead by now, he supposed.
But there would be time for speculation later. Caz stood and walked back to the table to grab a clear glass syringe with white casing for protection.  Now was the time for-
A blaring ringing began to play from his phone in the office and hallways, forcing Seven onto their knees with hands thrown over the ear holes. Looks like it'll have to wait, he thought with a deep sigh. He kneeled next to Seven and began to stroke a spot on her wings in a calming motion. She looked up with tears in her eyes, and as soon as she did, he pulled the trigger. Releasing the sedative in his tranquilizer gun and forcing her to collapse.
Gently placing her back on the bed, he swiftly made his exit, walking past several guards on their way to secure the rooms. A sign left him as he weighed all the problems this interruption would cause. The subject would be stressed and suspicious and the data would be inconclusive. They'd have to reschedule.
The ping on his phone that accompanied the alarm made the reason for it quite clear;
EMERGENCY ALERT:
Silent Alarm Triggered;
Unauthorized action detected in Sub Basement level 1 west quadrant
Caz was currently on level three which along with part of level two stored these inhuman creatures. The only thing on level 1 was storage, servers, security offices.
What could someone without authorization possibly want with some stupid boxes?
Driving
Okay, I drive between one and two hours each way for work every day, and clearly people need to know things about driving
Turn signal:
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but it’s actually MOST important to use your turn signal when you don’t think there is anyone else around. Because sometimes there IS somebody, someone who has changed lanes or turned out of a driveway behind you right after you looked in the rearview mirror, or someone who is in your blindspot, or a bike rider you just didn’t see or whatever. If you know a person is there, you can actively avoid hitting them or getting hit by them, but if you don’t know they are there then they are the only one who can possibly act to avoid any accident causing scenarios; communicating what you are about to do might be the only thing that makes your movement avoidable and can prevent mishap and tragedy.
Freeway On-ramp:
The freeway onramp is there to allow you to match speeds with the traffic on the freeway. That is it’s purpose. I know it can feel counter intuitive, but this usually means you need to accelerate very quickly in the space you have. Moving at speed gives you options when you start to merge, you can speed up a little bit and get in front of someone, or slow down a little bit and get behind them -- and if you do wind up having to get in front of someone who is moving faster than you, it is much safer to be going only a little slower than them rather than a lot slower. Furthermore, going slow on the onramp prevents the cars behind you from gaining the proper speed to safely merge onto the freeway, AND tends to bunch up cars into an un-spaced group behind you, which is less safe and more trouble for the people on the freeway; they would have been able to slot into the spaces between cars, but now there is a solid line of cars all moving too slow and no space to slow gradually and merge, they must brake suddenly and endanger the people behind them.
Left lane:
Okay, I am not a driving instructor or a legal beagle, but I am a very experienced driver and current daily commuter (and a Californian, which apparently is relevant -- after living in other states I now realize that not everyone considers ten mph over to be the unspoken actual speed limit, but we fucking do, okay? Please PLEASE know this if you visit)
The left lane is often called the fast lane, but is also called the passing lane --  because that is what you are supposed to be using it for. If you are not actively passing people who are in the lane to the right of you, you are not technically supposed to be in that lane. Even if you are going faster than the traffic in the right hand lane, if you have cars behind you, and a space opens up to your right, you are supposed to change lanes to give the people behind you a chance to pass you. The actual speed you are going, in units, is not important. If people want to go faster than you, being in the left lane is supposed to be the way they can do that. It is safer for everyone and the way the roads are supposed to be used. Please do not prevent this by going the same speed as the traffic to your right and never moving to the right. It is far safer and easier for a car to simply move to the right and allow the cars that were behind them to pass by safely than it is to force them to accelerate and weave to try to get around. And being in the far left lane on a freeway and going the same speed as the other lanes causes so much avoidable traffic.
Look it up. That’s how it’s supposed to be used. If a person is behind you and they want to go faster than you, and you are in the farthest left lane... just. move. over. I’m begging you.
Blind Spot:
Somebody almost caused a serious accident today, by suddenly jerking into my lane with no warning. We were both doing about 50 mph, and I had to swerve violently to avoid being struck by his vehicle. I was in his blindspot, and he didn’t see me. I was a split second’s reaction away from being in the hospital right now.
Check over your shoulder before you turn or change lanes. There is literally a part of the road big enough to hide a car that your mirrors won’t show you. And similar to the turn signal, when you think there’s no one there is when it’s most dangerous. Just check. Look over your shoulder. It takes 1.5 seconds.
Important note about this: Do Not Perform This Check While Accelerating. For clarity, ‘acceleration’ is an increase in speed; in other words, do not go from moving at 60 mph to moving at 70 mph while your head is turned over your shoulder. I know this sounds like it shouldn’t have to be said, but believe me, it does. See, sometimes, the traffic in front of you will have begun to slow down a bit for some reason right when you are looking over your shoulder -- 1.5 seconds should be fine to look away if you are leaving adequate space between you and other cars, but if you speed up at the same time... crash boom bang. So remember, if you are changing lanes for the purpose of increasing your speed, the order of operations is: turn signal, check your blindspot, then accelerate.
(U. L.) An Impossible Defeat
Synopsis: After he survived witnessing the giant’s Banding, Warren seems to be the target of a vengeful giant. It seems just quitting the Unseen Legion was not enough to protect him.
Warnings: PARTIAL HARD VORE, GRAPHIC SEVERE INJURIES, PARTIAL DIGESTION, NEAR DEATH, F/M halfsize unwilling nonfatal vore, fatal mention,
((Phili’s note:
Me: takes 4 months to write one U.L. story  Also me: Writes this story the next day in under 24 hours OHhhh yeah babyee we movin’ along! And yeah I got pretty violent for this one, so if you’re squeamish, I would be cautioned. Also if ye like this story, go ahead and reblog! It helps spread my work and it means a lot! ^w^ ))
“Well I came a long way to be here today
And I left you so long on this avenue
And here I stand In the strangest land
Not knowing what to say or do”
The windows of the old silver Civic were rolled down and the speakers blared the upbeat tunes of Electric Light Orchestra. Warren had his elbow propped out the window, some aviator sunglasses, and his hair blowing back in the mountain breeze that gushed through the windows. He was belting out the lyrics of the tune, stumbling over some of the lyrics, but he didn’t care. His voice was high and steady despite his stumbling over the words.
“As I gaze around at these strangers in town
I guess the only stranger is me”
Unknown to the ex-hunter, something with glistening eyes followed from within the treeline. Its speed rivaling a racehorse, though quieter than a cat. Its figure was too fast to be seen beyond a subtle blur past the treeline as a hulking silhouetted shape masked by the glare of the setting sun.
“And I wonder, Oh I wonder
Is this the way life’s meant to be?”
He was having a great time with the free air. No more U. L. missions. No more giants or near-death experiences. Just him and his friends about to meet up at a concert out of town to have a fun evening. The sun was beginning to descend over the road, casting its golden glare over the windshield. In his mind, he might’ve been a Lone Ranger riding into the sunset. He had seen some things no one else would believe. That alone could power a Western film.
Though he was beginning to associate dusk with death, he was safe in his car. Nothing could get him here. He’d be with his friends when he got into town. Safety in numbers, right?
“Although it's only a day since I was taken away
And left standing here looking in wonder”
The figure in the tree line burst out. Warren didn’t notice it immediately with the sound of blaring music, but one glimpse at the rearview mirror showed what was going on. “OH SHIT--!”
A giant. Seriously? What sort of gods decided to toy with Warren’s luck at this point? This was just ridiculous at this point. He thought he could recognize the figure. Long white dreadlocks, dark skin, flashing silver eyes. She was even taller than Eli by a good two feet. She had a weird name, but Warren couldn’t remember exactly what Eli had called her back then. Not that he cared. His first thought was getting the hell out of here.
“Oh, the ground at my feet, maybe it's just the old street
But everything that I know lies under”
The melodic voice continued on, despite the alarm in the situation. The sheer contrast only seemed to add to the stress of the situation.
He stepped on the gas, speeding faster. The giant was in hot pursuit, soon practically on the car’s bumper. Her claws dug into the asphalt, powering her unbelievable speed. 60 mph. She was still not lagging behind.
Her claws lashed out and she lunged forward, digging her claws into the back of the car and pulled herself half-onto it while her feet dug into the ground to gain traction. The car screeched, lurching to a halt. Warren was thrown over the steering wheel and the impact jammed into his ribs causing a painful crack.
He wheezed, blinking through the adrenaline to realize the car was at a complete halt, and the silver-haired giant was approaching the driver’s door.
“And when I see what they’ve done to this place that was home,
Shame is all that I feel”
He gasped, almost immediately coughing from the pain of the shifting of his lungs disturbing a freshly cracked rib. He hastily unbuckled, trying to scoot away from the driver’s seat as the large figure stooped over the window. Her slit silver eyes peered in. An expression of complete indifference played on her face. No response to the intense fear he was feeling. It almost scared him more than any taunts. There was no connection of emotion. Just complete apathy.
“And I wonder, yes I wonder,
Is this the way life’s meant to be?”
The door was ripped from its hinges. Her clawed hand reached for him, trying to grab through the narrow space to get ahold of him. He scooted backwards. His breaths rattled in his chest. His heart pounded in his ears. Tears pricked the corners of his wide eyes as the claws barely skimmed him as they fought to gain purchase. He ducked beneath the console of the passenger’s seat, digging out his phone and his shaky fingers struggled to operate the device to send a hasty message.
A crushing grip closed around his leg. He screamed.
“Too late, too late to cry, the people say
Too late for you, too late for me”
He was dragged out of the car, clawing for purchase. Trying to grab onto one of the seats or the steering wheel. His cracked ribs bumped painfully against the seats. She pulled him out of the car, hoisting him onto the air by his ankle.
“You've come so far, now you know everything, my friend
Look and see the wonders--”
Her ears twitched and she stomped her foot over the front of the car, smashing the radio. She didn’t seem to enjoy it. Without another word, she rose to her full height again, leaving the ground far below Warren as she began to walk back into the treeline. The ex-hunter whimpered, struggling to try to reach the hand that held his ankle. It was scary and disorienting to be held this high above the ground upside-down. A fall like this could break his neck, but not escaping would lead to certain death. He had encountered giants plenty enough times to get a pretty good idea about where this was going.
“P-please-- R-- Riki-- uh-- Riri--?” Warren struggled to remember her name, but honestly he couldn’t think at this point.
To his surprise, she let out a cold laugh. “If that Arawn knew you called me that, he would have finished what he started last time.”
Warren shuddered, recalling how they had parted last time. She was climbing up a cliff and Eli had eaten him to protect him from the other giants. He had been certain he was going to die.
“I--” “I should have known he had gone soft like his sister. I suppose I will soon deliver him the same fate as she has received. This human, however,” She lifted him higher so that they were practically face-to-face, just inches apart. He took in a shuddering gasp which stung his lungs.
“It’s lived too long to see too much… Things that no human should have seen. Not that it makes any distinction from the rest of the humans.” She sighed and opened her mouth beneath him. His eyes widened and he flailed, trying to jerk away from her open mouth. He quickly reached up to dig into his pocket. His fingers nearly slipped to drop the object, but he caught it, unfolding a pocket knife. She gave him an unimpressed look, and her other hand reached up to grab it just as he managed to slash it across her face. “GAHH-!”
A growl sounded through her throat. Her hand crushed around his leg, snapping his bones like twigs and he screamed in pain. Her other arm reached up and gripped him roughly around the torso. Her teeth snapped over the knife-wielding hand and spat out the weapon onto the forest floor. Blood poured down from a slash across her face, dripping down from her chin.
“I think that you’ll learn that fighting will only worsen things for you, human.” Her voice drawled. Warren cried, barely able to focus on her in the blinding pain. She shifted her grip to let go of his leg and reinforce her grip around his waist, beginning to lower him into her mouth backwards. Warren sucked in a terrified breath as his feet met the back of her tongue and she began to gulp them into her tight throat. Things were happening so fast. His shattered ankle screamed in protest as it was engulfed into the passage of rippling muscle.
“No! Nono— wait—“
The giant swallowed again and he suppressed a shout of pain. Her legs were now fully encased in the throat and his lower torso was entering her maw. Fangs jabbed painfully around him. She clearly didn’t bother being careful about how rough she was in the process. The giant’s tongue slathered his torso in gross saliva as she gulped more of him down. The ex-hunter whimpered and grabbed for the edge of her jaws in a poor attempt to stop his descent. This only made things worse when she met the blockage.
Her jaws widened for a second before crushing down over his chest, not enough to snap him in half, but enough to draw blood and hurt like hell. There was a distant scream of pain. He was getting lightheaded. He was losing blood, and was faintly aware of the feeling of blood dripping from his limp fingertips, and pooling our from her jaws. There was a hungry growl that sounded around the throat from the taste of his blood. The tongue cupped under him and she began to tilt her head back. He had lost the strength to struggle, in a state of shock and agony that made it too hard for him to think.
Another swallow sounded around him, bringing his head into the mouth. His chest was squeezed into the too-tight throat which crushed his already cracked ribs. He was barely able to choke another breath through the pain. It was a frightening sight to see the jaws wide around him, the saliva dripping over his line of sight. The marks of his own blood trailing down from the fangs. He didn’t have the strength to struggle in his state of stupor and pain.
One last gulp dragged him completely into the darkness, and his arms soon followed. He distantly felt pain shoot up his ankle as his feet began to press through the esophageal sphincter and the rest of him began to follow into the tight organ, forced to curl up in the claustrophobic space. As soon as his head and arms finally joined him, he coughed and gagged for air, finding it difficult to breathe with how much each breath hurt. The air was scalding and humid and burned his already aching lungs. The jagged movements of his rapid breaths only hurt his cracked rib further. He hugged his knees and cried.
“R— Rikki— R— Rhyka— please— please don’t do this.” He barely managed to recall the giant’s name.
Rhyka ignored him. She couldn’t care less. The giant was so tall and broad that her stature nearly perfectly concealed the small imprint he made, and the only mark of his existence was subtle. It made it all too easy for him to be ignored.
“L-listen, I’m…” he hissed in an anxious breath through his teeth, trying not to fully break down now. The heat was exhausting, and the main thing keeping him conscious was the intense pain. He just wanted it all to end, but at the same time, he didn’t want to die. Not like this. His sisters needed him, and he tried his best to not abandon them, only for his luck to turn for the worst once again. He could recall Olivia’s lessons on giants and hoped to god something might work here to give him a slim chance of survival. “R-Rhyka… I’m sorry humans drove giants into hiding. I— I wish things were— were different between our kinds… but— but killing people won’t fix that.”
To his surprise, the giant let out a laugh. “You truly believe that having a, ah, ‘heart-to-heart’ will spare your life here? Your kind is an inferior race. Weak. Pathetic. Even if your kind had not done what they did, it does not change the fact that we are the predators, and you are the prey.”
Warren shuddered, biting back a sob of fear. “B— wait—“
“You could save your meager breaths now. I have heard all the same arguments. None sway me. Do yourself a favor and accept your fate.”
Warren could feel the movement from her walking seem to settle. There was a dropping sensation and his environment seemed to tilt sideways. She must have laid down or something. He squirmed in place, biting back a hiss of pain as he had to reorient himself with his vulnerable broken shin and ribs. The puddle of fluids he was sitting in splashed over his face, making him sputter and cough weakly. He noticed a faint stinging and his heart rate picked up in alarm. Acids—? Giants only digest when they’re asleep… which meant Rhyka must be heading there now.
“Wait— no—no— please— I— you can’t—“
He froze as he could hear the giant’s breaths slow to a more relaxed rate. She didn’t respond. His eyes widened in the darkness and he took in shaky breaths. An ominous growl sounded nearby from the organ. The puddle of fluids was half-filling the space now, and still having trouble to reorient himself, he had to sputter and squirm to avoid breathing in the stinging fluids.
“Nononono— G-God— p-please…” he cried. He didn’t want to believe this. He didn’t want to die like this. He had dodged death before, he had to do it again. But Eli has told him time and time again he was weak, and he was right.
The stomach groaned and clenched tightly around him, causing the level of fluids to rise briefly before the walls relaxed. He took in a sharp gasp of pain, bracing his shattered leg that just felt like pulp now. He could swear he felt something crack from the way his leg bent just then, feeling the limb was beyond repair. It was probably just held together by shredded muscle and tissue at this point.
He was too tired and in too much pain to really fight back the oppressive stomach folds that began to clench around him more rhythmically.
“I guess you’ll die then” Olivia’s voice echoed in his mind, recalling her lecture from before.
Warren took in shaky breaths in the heat. Olivia had a point. She gave him lessons, and if he gave up, he would be dead. Not every giant would be generous enough to let him live. Rhyka wasn’t one of them. He had to think.
Olivia had mentioned a pressure point against the spine that could do… something? His brain felt foggy, but some part of him could recall that it might save his life. He hadn’t succeeded last time he tried.
He grimaced as the stomach gurgled loudly again and its walls crushed in closer. The acids were beginning to sting worse. Burning at the bare skin of his hands and face. He held out his elbows on either side to hold the slimy walls off of his face, letting out a rasping breath through his teeth. He felt around in the darkness, trying to orient himself to figure out what was where. Doing some calculations based on how he had been swallowed, and the new position of the sleeping giant, he made a blind guess of an idea. He was facing the wrong way. Being swallowed feet-first and backwards, he was likely facing the outer wall of the stomach, instead of the vertebrae where his target lay.
He grunted, twisting around in position and using his one good leg to try to reorient himself to face the spine. He had no idea if he was right about this, and every inch of the tight organ was identical. It was especially difficult to figure out if he had turned a 180 or just a few inches because of how disorienting the rippling muscles were, making his laborious movements either too small or too big to calculate. He settled at where he ended up, however, taking a moment to gather his breath. The heat was really making him feel like he was about to pass out, and he just wanted a break from the pain of his mangled leg and ribs. He couldn’t rest though. He had to at least try.
He leaned back as far as he could, using his hands to press himself backwards in the stomach as his one good leg kicked at the spine. There was no response, and he tried kicking everywhere along the opposing wall. Everything felt the same, so it was impossible to know how close he even was from it. The walls around him crushed in more tightly. He could barely breathe now. The fluids were rising higher. He was on the verge of passing out. The heat. His mind was numb and far away. His only thought was his sisters. He had to focus on them. He could barely even recall their faces. So tired...
Kick.
The tightening walls suddenly went limp, freeing the small pocket of air. Warren gasped for air, feeling lightheaded from all the effort. He didn’t know what happened. He didn’t even know if he had succeeded. Everything was too foggy to focus on. His mind slowly drifted from consciousness.
***
“Rrrg. Wha... what did you do… to me…?”
Warren was slowly brought to his senses by a rough jab that met his injured rib which prompted a scream of pain. He gasped, foggily beginning to regain his senses. Everything hurt. The first thing he noted was the voice… so loud and rumbling around him. There was a numbness around him. He could barely feel his limbs, but at the same time, he was faintly aware of a burning sensation covering everywhere. He was soaked to the bone by a deep pool of slimy fluids. It was hard to know how much of him was left, and if most of him already been melted away. The walls weren’t as active or crushing as they had been before. The place felt oddly dormant aside from an occasional groan or squelch from the environment, the sound of the giant’s breaths, and the thumping of her heart nearby. How long had he been in here?
“Wh…” Warren’s tongue felt like it wouldn’t cooperate enough to speak. “Whd’yamean…” He slurred. He couldn’t think. He was too tired. He just wanted this hell to end, whatever this hell was.
“Don’t play stupid with me, human... You… you shouldn’t still be alive! What have you done to me?” Her voice almost sounded pained in a way, though his brain was too tired to pick up the tone. The jab once again met his side, though thankfully hit his shoulder this time. He weakly tried to raise his arm to push back.
“D’nno… wha you… mean. Wh...what time’sssit…?”
The pressure increased by his side and he could hear a gurgle nearby. “I am finished with your games… Hunter. You will be dead soon enough… what… whatever tricks you are using will… wear off.”
“I.. I dunno wha-- what…” he took in deep breaths, on the verge of passing out again. He was faintly aware of a shifting from outside and the pressure lightened to be circular rubs. Any other moment he’d be indignant to the action, but right now, he was too tired to really think about it. There was definitely something off about her voice. She sounded… fatigued. He didn’t think into it.
“Please… j-just… just make it s-stop…” the ex-hunter groaned weakly. He was regaining awareness of the burning sensation around his skin. The pain from his broken leg and ribs.
The giant didn’t respond aside from an annoyed growl that rumbled to her core as she rubbed the form in her stomach as if to help him digest faster. Her breaths began to calm again. He could hear another gurgle from the stomach and the dormant walls began to pick up their act again, rubbing against his skin and distributing the numb, stinging fluids over his skin. He didn’t bother squirming. He was too weak to think. Rebeka. Liss.
What were those names anymore? He could barely recall their faces. Just concepts at this point. But more than anything, he wanted to see them again.
Had the kick done something before?
A clench tightened around him, bringing up the acid level higher, briefly submerging his head under the caustic fluids. He choked and struggled weakly for breath just as the walls loosened up again just enough to give him a chance to take shallow gasps for air. He tried to focus, lifting up his good leg briefly to jab into the opposite wall again. It took every fiber of strength for the action. He kicked a few times. The walls tightened again and he was submerged. His heart pounded. He could hear the giant’s heart thump more slowly. The distant gurgling sounds of the stomach around him. His lungs burned for air. He kicked out his leg again, trying anywhere for that pressure point. His foot slipped, then dug into the opposite wall. It just barely managed to hit the right place. The walls loosened up again and Warren coughed weakly, gasping for air. The whole stomach seemed to grow limp again. His body followed suit. He didn’t have the strength to keep this up. Even if he was alive for now, he was prolonging the inevitable. He wasn’t going to make it out of here alive.
He was too tired to cry, but there was a pang of emotion in his chest nonetheless. His body grey limp again. His ears began to sink beneath the stinging fluids. His mind fell to dormancy again.
Olivia had been sound asleep through the whole night, unknowing of her phone buzz with Warren’s text. Her face was planted on the alchemy table and her glasses were falling off of her nose. In the late morning, she rose again to get some coffee and sat down with her entire carafe of coffee with her alchemy equipment, ready to put this frustratingly difficult concoction in the past. She worked for a while at her project before she saw her phone buzz. It was another hunter wanting some more potions for lycanthropy. She had been getting too many requests from that same hunter, it was beginning to get rather tiring. Wait a moment… There was another message from Warren.
Her tired eyes scanned it with her bulbous spectacles before sighing tiredly and picked up her pastel pink bag of alchemy equipment and got in her car to drive away.
***
The white dump truck hummed down the winding road into the forest. Olivia was dead tired and really didn’t want to be doing this. She would much rather finish that lycanthrope-enthusiast’s order, or sleep instead. The road was not a popular route, one of the back roads. It didn’t look like anyone was within miles of the stretch of asphalt. Though something laid ahead in the road. A smashed silver car was sprawled out over the asphalt in shredded bits of smashed metal. Her brow raised slightly and she parked her truck on the shoulder of the road, giving the wreckage a good once-over before she sighed and pressed through the treeline.
She took out a small vial of blue liquid from her alchemy bag and opened up the bottle, placing a small drop on her finger and dabbed it beneath her nose. She sniffed in the odd scent of the concoction and the effect was instant. A faint blue mist seemed to appear in the forest. A scent trail that led further ahead. Wordlessly, she followed it.
There was a dip in the forest path that led into a steep ravine which was difficult to travel into, though she managed. At the bottom of the ravine in a dip in the rock, the scent trail led to an end.
A white-haired giant laid asleep on her side. There was a slight bulge in her middle. Her clawed hand rested over it. It didn’t take much imagination to deduct what had happened. The alchemist sighed, taking a small yellow orb of ice out of her bag and put her teeth together, making a high-pitched whistle barely audible to human ears. The response was instant. The giant’s eyes opened, though she remained on the ground. She tiredly turned to her side, scowling as she spotted the alchemist.
“I take it you’ve eaten William, then,” Olivia’s tired voice drawled.
Rhyka’s eyes narrowed and she sat up, glaring at the ice that the alchemist wielded, knowing exactly what it was meant for.
“He is dead. Your point?” Her voice was groggy, almost coming out in a slur.
Olivia sighed. “Well I guess I have no restraint from using this, then.” She raised the ice and approached the giant with an unphased expression.
The giant held up a hand hastily. “Stop… It… I will release the human if you throw that into the woods. I lied. He might be alive. I can’t know for certain at this point, though it’s the only chance you have.”
Olivia shrugged and tossed the ice aside indifferently. “Alright. Let him go.”
Rhyka looked like she hadn’t expected this, but groaned. Her eyes were exhausted. She looked like she had been through hell with some sort of terrible indigestion. She pressed a hand to her stomach. Heaving sounds came, then the bulge in her middle reformed in her throat, slowly traveling upwards. She lowered her head and gagged. The form of the bedraggled, slimy hunter spilled out onto the ground in a pool of reeking fluids.
Olivia barely seemed phased at all by Warren’s appearance. He looked like he had been thrown in a meat grinder. His left leg was crushed to pulp beneath the knee. He was covered in acids and his own blood. Past the dripping slime, patchy red burns littered his skin.
The alchemist didn’t waste a moment before reaching into her bag again and threw another yellow orb of ice at the giant, hitting her clean in the face. Rhyka let out an infuriated shout as the enchanted ice seemed to melt into her skin. There were cracking and shifting sounds and she began to decrease in height. The giant roared, lunging forward to slash her claws at Olivia, only to shrink further and bat harmlessly with declawed otherwise human fingertips. She collapsed onto the ground, hissing in pain. She eventually shrank down to a complete human size, though she was still a good foot taller than the short alchemist.
Olivia pursed her lips, ignoring the giant as she stepped toward Warren. He wasn’t moving. Neither was the giant. Whatever vigor she had before was short-lived. She seemed too wiped out to fight.
“Wilhelm, listen to me,” She sat down on the earthy floor, taking his slimy hand. His hand remained limp in hers. She shot a look at the now shrunken giant. “You killed him.” She spoke levelly. She sighed and withdrew a black orb from her bag and pressed it into his hand. “Wake up,” She muttered.
The black orb melted into his hand, seeming to grow warm before disappearing. For a moment, there was no response, before she glanced over at him to see Warren’s chest slowly rose and fall. He was breathing. Weakly, but steadily.
***
Two were dragged into the truck by the tired alchemist. Rhyka’s hands were tied together, and Warren was seated next to her, unconscious, and wetting the seating with the gross slime that dripped from him.
They drove back to the alchemist shop in silence. Rhyka still seemed ill from whatever had happened, not in much of a talking mood.
Once they arrived back at the shop, Olivia put out a blanket on the floor for Warren and tied up the camouflaged Rhyka in a chair. Olivia did her best to clean Warren’s wounds and treat the burns, but for his broken leg, not much could be done.
***
Warren groggily returned to consciousness. A day had passed. He was lying on his back, staring up at the blank ceiling of Olivia’s basement. The light was dull, which was a good thing, to not be overwhelmed by too much light with his senses returning. He was in pain, though the worst thing of all was his leg. He could feel a crushing, burning sensation coming from it, though part of it was foggy and dampened. He must have been given medications while he was asleep to numb the pain.
What just happened.
The last thing he remembered was… He grunted as he rolled to his side and his blood froze. Rhyka was sitting tied up in a chair before him. His heart picked up rapidly.
“Look who awakened,” she smiled coldly.
“You… How... what..?” Warren mumbled. How was he here? How was he even alive?
footsteps sounded from the floor above. Olivia appeared on the staircase, looking over Warren tiredly. “Ah, Winston. Good to see you are alive.” She spoke in an expressionless drawl. “I suppose the pressure point techniques work after all.”
Warren hugged his arms, leaning back on the hard blanket. He just tried to level his breaths instead of thinking too much into it. He might have been in a state of shock.
“And my apologies about your leg. It seems not all of you was intact enough to be saved.”
Warren blinked, then glanced down at his legs. His breath caught in his throat and he felt like he had been punched in the gut. “Ho-holy shit.”
His left leg was gone. Amputated beneath the knee. He stared for a moment in shock. Olivia sat down next to him on the floor, taking a swig of her coffee from the glass carafe. “Yeah, you’ll get used to it. Just take it easy for now.”
He shuddered, biting his lip. “I… No… no… this can’t… I quit the U. L.. I-- I was supposed to be safe. W-why… Isn’t fair.”
Olivia sighed, glancing toward Rhyka. “The giant who ate you seemed to have a grudge from when you witnessed their Banding ritual. Apparently it’s no thing that any human should live to see. She had been hunting you down ever since.”
“B--but it’s not my fault! The giants brought me there! I-- I didn’t want anything to do with that!”
Rhyka rolled her eyes, staring at Warren in a deadpanned sort of way. “Ah, excuses. None of that will change anything, you are aware?”
Warren covered his face, shaking. “You… you cruel person… you wanted to kill me. I didn’t want to get involved with the giants ever again and-- and y-you went and…”
The alchemist’s hand tapped his shoulder and she let out a tired groan. “Rachel is right. None of the things that happened will change. However,” She rose to her feet, walking over to her alchemist desk and withdrew a shimmering grey knife. She turned to look at Warren. “I do not kill monsters unless I have to. If you wish to kill Roxanne, then that is up to you.”
Warren tried to stand, leaning against the wall and lifted the stump of his leg above the ground. He stumbled over toward Rhyka, using the wall as support. “Give me the knife.”
Rhyka’s eyes narrowed. Olivia sighed and went over to Warren, placing the knife in his hands. He gripped the blade, trying to keep a straight face through the pain in his leg and glared at Rhyka, holding it to her neck.
“How does it feel having the tables turned, huh Rhyka?” Warren grit his teeth. “You… You don’t care about humans. What did you say we were? W-weak? Inferior? ‘Lesser beings?’”
Her cold glare remained unwavering, locking eyes with Warren’s. She remained silent.
“Look at me now. You tried to kill me but failed.” The knife pressed more firmly against her throat, threatening to draw blood. “You-- you have no idea w-what you put me through. No one. No one should ever have to go through that. Killing you will avenge god-knows-how-many people you’ve murdered like that. I don’t wish death on many people but… You…”
His jaw tensed and his eyes narrowed. His grip tightened over the knife until his knuckles were white. He didn’t act for a solid few seconds. Rhyka held her breath.
The knife dropped to his side and clattered to the floor.
Rhyka let out a cold chuckle. “Coward,”
“I’m not like you, Rhyka.” Warren backed to the wall again, sliding down to be seated. He put a hand on his injured leg, hissing through his teeth and looked to the side, trying not to focus on the pain. He was defeated, even if he had survived. He had just lost his leg, though it felt like he had lost so much more.
Storms
Ship: RFA + Minor Trio and GN!Reader
Warnings: None
Word Count: 5,431 words total; about 700 per person
Premise: A rewrite of an old request I wrote back in 2017 (link here).
Author’s Note: These are less headcanons and more fics outlines lmao but hope you like this rewrite. I do considering I can barely stand reading the original, my writing has thankfully improved, and I hope it will continue to do so. I haven’t written in 2nd person in literal years (3rd person ftw) so I hope it doesn’t come off too strange.
Two notes. Firstly I’ve done my best to make the reader gender neutral. If you catch any gendered terms feel free to tell me so I can fix it. Secondly, I haven’t played Another Story yet, rip my broke ass, so if V and Saeran are a bit out of character, that’s definitely why. I’m working on it haha. In regards to V I simply know almost nothing about his route, and in regards to Saeran I’ve decided to ignore what I know about his route, mostly because this was hitting 4,000 words at that point and an in depth HC involving canonical thing would probably be about that length. Sorry this is so long and thus the final HCs a bit rushed. Thanks for putting up with me! Hope you enjoy!
Zen
Having a fear of thunderstorms was one of the most obnoxious fears on the planet sometimes. Especially when one is surround by 60 mph gusts of wind and the house one lives in feels like 80% glass.
This was the predicament you were left in when a series of storms passed through the first week you and Zen were officially dating. Oh joy.
Despite how in love you were with Zen, revealing one’s fears, especially when they seem vaguely irrational, is a difficult thing to do, so you teetered towards Option B
That being: Don’t tell anyone, keep calm, if you need to take a break go to the bathroom or say you forgot something in the bedroom. Okay? Okay.
However this flawless plan of attack lasted only about five minutes, and the first clap of thunder had you ready to bolt under the bed.
Zen, bless him, was utterly oblivious, listening to the backtrack of a song he was working on and occasionally making such benign comments as “that’s a lot of rain” or “wow that was loud”
Yeah. That was loud. Help me.
Eventually it got a bit… much, and you had to make your excuses about getting a book from the television/living room. Since it was in the “basement” part of the complex you’d figured that it’d be easier to hide out there. Just turn off all the lights, try to find earplugs, then count down the time until the storms were over.
Unfortunately the weather wasn’t adhering to this plan very well, how typical of it, as the storms were supposed to last until the early hours of the morning. And it wouldn’t exactly be unobtrusive to not eat.
So after ten minutes in the dark you went out to help Zen prepare dinner. At least no one needed to go to the grocery store. And today’s menu included Japchae, so always a treat! It was going to be okay, nothing was going to happen. It’s fine.
At least that’s what you told yourself until a particular bright flash of lightning streaked the sky and you promptly jumped and dropped the sweet potato noodles on the ground.
At this point Zen switched from oblivious to overly concerned. Say what you will about him but he was truly a sweetheart when he noticed something was wrong. As he helped you pick up the spilled noodles, assuring you that there was enough still in the package to use, he asked what was wrong
You explained that when you were little your grandparents had a house in a village in the countryside and one summer day lightning struck a powerline, causing it as well as two houses close to yours to burn down.
Zen responded with such concern. “Oh MC I’m so sorry to hear that! Was anyone hurt? No wonder you’re uncomfortable around storms now.”
“It was such a long time ago, and it’s so unlikely to happen again my lifetime… I don’t know why I’m still so afraid, it’s so stupid.”
“It’s not stupid to be afraid of something. You don’t have to hide your fears around me sweetheart. There’s no shame in it.”
Unfortunately words usually cannot make fears go away, but safe to say you were touched. Picking up the rest of the noodles and disposing them you and Zen shared a sweet series of hugs, and maybe you wouldn’t continued down that route if the water hadn’t begun to boil and dinner was once more brought back into stark focus.
Afterwards you guys ate in front of the tv, turning on a random crappy show and making fun of the announcer.
You could still hear the thunder every once in a while, but Zen made sure you felt safe and happy, cuddling you, doing something to draw your attention to him at the beginning of each clap of thunder, and keeping up a steady stream of conversation, even about the most mundane of things.
Your fear still wasn’t gone, and you still weren’t excited for the rest of the week, but at least you had someone with you who truly cared and was actively trying to make you feel better. You knew Zen would always be there for you, and that knowledge would carry you through the most anxious of times, to the other side.
You truly loved him so much.
Yoosung
Sometimes you wished that you could disappear into something as easily as Yoosung did, both with his games and with his studying.
Yoosung was in his first year of veterinarian medical school and, having just passed the first series of exams, had invited you over to the apartment he was leasing, for an evening of games, television, and overall hanging out. It would’ve been more of a date, but the weather was impressively stormy and, much to your relief, it was decided that staying inside was the better option.
Yoosung was loading up a game on the tv and you were checking to see what remained in the fridge, when a bolt of lightning raced across the sky; suddenly you became aware of just how very high up apartment buildings tended to be, and, much like usual, the logical part of your brain repeating Googled information about lightning rods was replaced by a static of anxiety floating around in your brain.
Returning to the TV room you nervously picked up the controller, hoping that Yoosung wouldn’t notice. Not that you didn’t trust him to understand, indeed you’d hardly met anyone as understanding as Yoosung, but it was more that years of being told “it’s just rain” had kinda gotten to your system.
The first half an hour or so was alright, the quiet mental notes you were taking told you that the storm was still far enough away, although there was no doubt it was getting closer; something reinforced by your, hopefully, discreet checking of the weather app.
When the storm arrived, oh boy did it arrive.
The winds felt unbearable, screaming terribly, rattling the windowpanes with fast, stinging rain, so much so the outside looked less like the outside and more like the middle of a whirlpool. A whirlpool that occasionally set itself on fire, the lightning dispersed by the odd shadows of the rain.
At this point all pretense fell out the window.
“MC?” Yoosung looked over as you’d dropped the remote and drawn your legs up to your chest, burying your face in your knees, all thoughts blocked out. “MC.” Yoosung said a little louder, putting his own remote down on the coffee table and scooting over to where you were sitting on the couch. “Hey.” He wrapped his arms around your shoulders, something vaguely uncomfortable considering the position you both were sitting in, but still a welcome presence, a bit of comfort making its way past your wall of fear.
“Not a huge fan of thunderstorms I see.” He said when the storm had calmed down a bit. You let out a shaky sort of laugh. Understatement of the century, wouldn’t you think?
“I have an idea!” Yoosung ran out of the room, leaving you to curl yourself up again, until he came back, a pair of headphones in hand.
“These are the best noise cancelling headphones I own, and they cost a fortune so they’d better work.” He placed them over your ears, and immediately you noticed how muffled the sound became. Evidently it must’ve shown on your face, because Yoosung smiled even wider, nodding gently before picking up his remote again.
As the storm continued so did the gaming. At some point you guys ended up thrown about the couch, cuddling each other, and occasionally knocking elbows when the gaming got intense. When things were finally over you two lay there a little longer, although you’d taken the headphones off.
“Thank you.” You whispered, content.
“For what?” Yoosung smiled. “That’s what boyfriends are for.”
“Not all boyfriends.” You countered “You’re special. The best boyfriend one could ask for.”
And you meant it.
Tumblr media
Jaehee
I imagine both you and Jaehee not being huge fans of thunderstorms. They frightened you, and to Jaehee the volume gave her a headache, not to mention the fact you were both living in a cheap apartment on the ground floor while the coffee shop’s purchase was still new; and the whole structure had this obnoxious habit of vibrating with both the lightning and thunder, leaving everything a bit discombobulated and very unpleasant.
The coffee shop wasn’t much better really, open as it was, the whole front being 85% glass and only 15% brick.
So when you both checked your phones and saw that storms were on their way it was all about planning.
Since you couldn’t afford to close the shop for the week you instead put a large display in the windows, putting up cardboard trees, birds, and whatever else would block most of the view.
You went through the store, making sure everything unnecessary was unplugged.
Really it was probably a bit overkill, or at least Jumin and Seven certainly thought it was, but hey better safe than sorry.
The apartment was given the same treatment, blinds and shutters were closed, toasters and charging cords were unplugged, and Aspirin and earplugs were stocked up.
The week of the storms was really incredibly unpleasant, with you two sneaking in hugs and kisses whenever the line of customers was small, squeezing each other’s hands when a particularly bright streak of lightning flashed, or when the thunder seemed to become unbearable.
No dawdling home this week, much to the chagrin of both of you, who’d taking to park exploring and other such mundane things that both you and Jaehee had missed out on, her due to work and you due to being shut up in Rika’s apartment for eleven days.
Nevertheless neither of you were particularly keen to venture out in the middle of a storm, so instead you two headed home, a night’s worth of musicals and cuddling ahead of you.
Dinner was spent in front of the tv, although usually you two usually made a point to eat at the dining table it was in the most windowed room in the house and thus not meant to be.
Zen’s beautiful tenor might not have been enough to completely drown out the storms, but it was certainly a help, not to mention the large doses of cuddles you were giving one another.
But really the best part about it was just being able to talk freely about your fears, you both having the reference that those who don’t suffer with what’s widely considered an irrational fear in modern times don’t understand.
And that was really what kept it together for you two. You’ll always be there for one another, you’ll always understand one another.
Eventually the clock struck the hour and you both realized that not only would there be work tomorrow, but musicals can’t much be enjoyed when you’re only paying half attention.
You got ready for bed, both making a final sweep for plugged in appliances that might burn out if there should be an energy surge.
Right before you two drifted off to sleep you gave Jaehee a small kiss. “What was that for?” She whispered. Everything was so beautifully comfortable, so cozy and intimate, and your happiness in that moment overpowered all fear.
“I just love you, I love you so much.” You replied. Jaehee blushed, but returned the kiss.
“I love you too. Forever.”
Tumblr media
Jumin
It’s not that you hid it from him because you were embarrassed, well at least that wasn’t the main reason. It was more Jumin’s habit of blowing everything out of proportion, to the point of hindrance. That was really what you were afraid of, you just needed calm, need comfort, not yoga or whatever was to be the cure. And not that Jumin couldn’t or wouldn’t give you comfort, but the likelihood of him giving you calm was maybe a bit more debatable.
So you tried to keep it hidden, mentioned nothing of it on your way out the door in the morning, avoiding the topic in the messenger, even when Seven started to go on and on about windspeed – did the bastard know something?
Things seemed to be going… okay? I mean they weren’t great, you were constantly pushing down the urge to hide in a closet or something, but hey Jumin wasn’t aware yet. Success?
The trip home was certainly unpleasant, and the text that your husband was working late again certainly didn’t seem promising, but hey there’d be Elizabeth, and the bedroom had amazing blackout curtains. So, yeah, it’d be fineeee.
At least it would be if the damn penthouse didn’t have windows for walls. Something that certainly wasn’t normal or part of the regular plan.
Nor was it really possible to take a nap with the thunder so loud and your thoughts running high, really it’d probably be better on the lower floors if you weren’t so sure of people being there.
At this point the plan became less of “don’t let Jumin know, play it cool” to “survive whatever the cost”, which yes perhaps was also an overreaction on your part, but you knew damn well that all rationality had long fled, and you weren’t about to go chasing after it, that wasn’t what you needed right now. Rationality was also what had you go into a google wormhole about terrifying lightning related accident. Need one say more?
So you picked up a perhaps a bit disgruntled Elizabeth the 3rd, and buried yourself under the covers, stroking her fur at regulated intervals, trying desperately to pay attention to the video you’d loaded on your phone, to less than perfect success.
You wouldn’t say that you were dozing when Jumin came home, it was more like you were so deep in your fears that you really didn’t have room to pay attention to anything else.
“MC?” Jumin was instantly alert when you didn’t run to greet him at the door, something that had really become tradition between the two of you. Him being also a bit of a worrier – and a bit being perhaps a gracious way of saying it, lovely though it can be – his first thoughts were that you’d hit your head and passed out somewhere, but the fact that Elizabeth had also not come to greet him clued him in that you two were most likely holed up somewhere, perhaps napping, as had happened a few times before.
His surprise then when you turned out to be in bed, distinctly not unconscious or asleep, holding onto Elizabeth like a vice, was really immense.
“Darling, is something wrong?” You knew he meant something rather more akin to “Something is definitely wrong and I’m very worried and hope you tell me, if not I might become a horrendous paranoiac and never stop bugging you but I also want to be polite about it.”
You folded quite quickly, deciding that it really wasn’t worth it, you were in such a state, and the anxiety was still in complete control of your brain, excuses weren’t about to be made.
In a moment Jumin had enveloped you in a hug, which you were glad to accept, discreetly kicking his phone away hoping that he’d not notice it and get it in his head to send for a meditative trainer or some such thing, since that wasn’t what you were looking for, at least not at the moment.
Thankfully though he seemed more focused on your wellbeing, asking you to talk through your anxiety, gently drawing circles on your back in an attempt to get rid of excess tension. It felt good to be able to release your stream of consciousness, even if it was a bit embarrassing. Every time you started feeling a bit overwhelming you’d insert an apology here and there but Jumin would simply shake his head and assure you it was fine
“After all, you were so patient and understanding when I went through a crisis of consciousness, when all my emotions were suddenly flooding my mind. You listened to me then, the least I can do is listen to you now.”
After you’d exhausted your thoughts and you two had laid there a bit, cuddled together, basking in each other’s presence, you two went to the kitchen, where Jumin insisted he’d make dinner himself.
You weren’t happy to be in the windowed room again, but one flick of a discreet switch and they were suddenly shuttered closed.
“You can do that?!”
“Of course?”
“Ugh, the idle rich.” You shook your head and Jumin feigned horror. This act went on throughout dinnertime, another thing to help soothe your nerves, as well as Elizabeth, who was being awfully nice, curled up in your lap.
Every clap of thunder and Jumin would hold your hand or give you a kiss or hug, again trying to distract you.
Afterwards it was watching trashy soap operas – really you couldn’t understand why Jumin adored these shows so much, he really did secretly have a flare for the dramatics – and more cuddling.
As the night got later and you got sleepier you realized that, though the anxiety wasn’t completely gone, you really were quite content.
“Ah, I wouldn’t mind this every time it stormed.”
Jumin chuckled at that. “Why not? Anything to make you comfortable and happy.”
“You’re going to spoil me terribly you know.”
“Again, why not? Comfort isn’t spoiling someone, and if it was I’d spoil you rotten. You deserve the universe, I’m just giving what I can.”
And really the comfort he gave you was worth five universes at that moment, but wasn’t he always worth that much?
Tumblr media
Saeyoung
Saeyoung’s reaction to your fear would probably initially be teasing.
Not because he thought it was funny, more his brain still found sincerity a hard thing to grapple with, and he found his knee jerking reaction be to try and make fun, enough fun for you to forget about everything.
You knew this of course, had long ago learned his patterns, his mannerisms and habits, and initially you tried to play along with it, after all the only reason he knew you were afraid of thunderstorms was because he’d caught you running into the closet on the CCTV in Rika’s apartment. If it weren’t for that you would’ve been perfectly happy with him never finding out. Surely you could humor him a bit.
Well anxiety has a funny way of sharpening one’s nerves, and by the sixth joke you were ready to pull your hair out, both from Saeyoung and from the storm.
“Hey Saeyoung? I really do appreciate what you’re doing, don’t get me wrong, but I… I don’t think this is going to be the way to sort it out.”
“Oh… I see.” Saeyoung faltered. Saeran, who was also not a fan and was thus gaming, probably with the volume at unhealthy rates, still managed to snort out a “I could’ve told you that.” Saeyoung shook his head apologetically.
“I’m sorry MC… I, uhm. Yeah…” For a moment you both sat on his horrifically battered couch, the tension rising. Saeyoung screwed his face up in thought, before launching himself towards you, wrapping you up in a huge hug.
“I.. Saeyoung-?”
“Cuddles are a miracle cure.” He said, kissing you on the forehead. “They’ll chase away the storms, just you wait, and in the meantime, how about you teach me how to make something other than sandwiches.”
“I know you know how to cook.” You pointed out, at least happier with this approach, but Saeyoung shook his head.
“I forgot. I can now only make ham sandwiches, and that is truly a sad fate. Wont you help me? Oh cook in shining armor.”
You rolled your eyes at that “Isn’t being the hero more of your route?” But agreed to make something with him.
Saeyoung really put everything into the “I forgot act”, and you soon found yourself distracted by his antics, peeling onions with a vegetable peeler, “accidentally” getting flour in your hair, tackling you with hugs and kisses the minute thunder or lightning even attempted an interruption. You found yourself either laughing or breathless from his attention, and when your anxiety was too difficult to ignore you allowed Seven to wrap you in a hug as you buried your head in his shoulder, his arms acting as a barrier for the sound.
Dinner took a horrendously long time to cook, something Saeran was sure to point out, but it really did help. As you two were cleaning up dishes Saeyoung paused for a moment.
“Being a hero really isn’t my thing you know.”
“Huh?” You’d sorta forgotten the earlier conversation amidst all the antics.
“You saved me MC, from myself, my own destruction. The least I could is chase away a few thunderstorms. I’d do anything to make you happy. So, I hope that you can be happy.
“What a silly thing to say.” You said, giving him a peck on the cheek. “I’m already so very happy, so incredibly glad to have you in my life. Indeed, if this isn’t happiness then there is no such thing.”
He really was your hero, your knight in peculiar armor. And you wouldn’t have it any other way.
Tumblr media
V/Jihyun Kim
V hated thunderstorms. Although he’d agreed to get his vision fixed, the date of the surgery was still some months off, and in the meantime every storm sent him in disarray, the sudden loudness of the thunder a disconcerting reminder of his own vulnerability, the fact that if even one thing in his life shifted he was likely to run right into it.
Being someone who had such a visceral hate, he was quick to become aware of your anxiety as well. It was something he just picked up on, before you had the chance to even think about hiding it from him.
“I see I’m not the only one who hates when it storms.”
You weren’t really surprised by his fear, he’d made it quite clear how he disliked to be reminded of the vulnerability that came from being blind, his eyes were already an ever present reminder of his past, a reminder of the feelings that had rotted inside him, which were so difficult to reconcile with.
So during the storms he ended up focusing most of his nervous energy on you, preferring that to morbid thoughts about the path his life had taken.
Coincidentally you tended to have the same reaction, and thus stormy days, though far from pleasant, became a semi-pleasant ritual, full of affection and comfort.
You pointed out the lightning and counted the miles out loud for him, something that helped him ground himself in the world, feel a little more in control of the situation, and in return he kept up a steady stream of conversation, telling you how your fears weren’t silly, how much it mattered to him that you were happy, and all the things you’d do together when the storms passed.
Sometimes you two turned on a podcast, or a video whose audio V had heard multiple times before, another exercise in familiarity that helped comfort you two. He also didn’t mind whether you kept the lights on or turned them off, only wishing to keep at least one window open, to keep track of the storm’s progress.
He also was in the habit of singing or humming at random intervals, his voice kept you in the moment, rather than in an endless loop of “what ifs”.
By the end of the storm you two were often exhausted, which is why they so often ended with you two tangled together, already half asleep.
One such time you were about to sleep, only barely awake to nod when V said the storm had passed.
“Jihyun,” you mumbled, hearing a hum in return. “I love you.”
V smiled, hearing that from you always felt like a moment of rejuvenation, of sudden clarity.
Kissing your forehead he hugged you a little tighter.
“I love you too.”
Tumblr media
Saeran
Saeran loved storms. Loved the sheer, raw, uninhibited power they exuded, the proof of how natural ruled above all.
You knew that. You also knew that storms were, in fact, the bane of your existence, and that you’re rather die than sit up and watch them with him.
But you also didn’t want to disappoint him, didn’t want to be a source of unhappiness in his life, so when Saeran eagerly looked out the window and called out “MC! It’s thundering!” You reluctantly dragged yourself over to watch with him.
At first it was alright if you focused on him more than on the outside, the awe and glee he took in watching the rain was endearing, the happiness marked so clearly and without inhibition. It was something that almost took your breath away in how beautiful it was, the joy of somehow who’d had so little of it.
Then the first clap of thunder arrived and you’d nearly sprained your wrist, slipping on the counter and banging your arm.
Saeran’s attention was immediately turned away from the thunderstorm and he looked at you curiously.
“Are you alright MC?”
“Yeah, I’m fine, it’s just, I’m fine.” You didn’t want him to know. It made him so happy, how could you ever take away from that, holding you bruised elbow you excused yourself to the bathroom for a moment, saying you needed make sure nothing was serious.
Of course that excuses could only last for so long, but the bathroom seemed such a comfort compared to the windowed rooms, and you lost track of all sense of time or space, curled up in a ball, leaning against the cold wall, the linoleum tiling keeping you grounded.
Eventually however it came to an end, and there was a short knock before Saeran turned the doorknob and opened the door.
“Something wrong?” He asked, immediately realizing the answer to that question after looking at your position. Kneeling down to face you he cupped your cheek. “Thunderstorms?”
You nodded, despite yourself. You really didn’t want to take this from him. But he didn’t seem to have felt like anything was taken, instead kissing you on the forehead and opening his arms for you to envelope yourself in them, something you did gratefully.
He held you, rocking you slightly, whispering random bits of words, random pieces of song, anything to keep your anxiety lower. Nudging the door shut once more you two stayed there for a while, and you finally felt yourself calm down.
“I’m sorry.” You mumbled.
“For what?” His tone was that of genuine confusion.
“For taking away watching thunderstorms from you. I don’t want to take anything away from you of course, I really don’t. I’m so sorry.”
“Oh MC…” Saeran peppered your face with kisses. “You haven’t taken anything away from me. I can still watch the thunderstorms, can still love them. Your fear isn’t something to be ashamed of, we all fear things in our lives, all have things we’d rather throw aside. I’m always here for you, always. It’s something I chose, and would choose over and over again. And that choice doesn’t mean I cannot chose to love thunderstorms, or watch them. It just means I have to make sure you’re comfortable as well. Besides, I wouldn’t want to do something that made you uncomfortable, not if I could do something about it. So don’t talk like that anymore, okay?”
You nodded, feeling reassured and slightly sheepish. He really was too good for words.
You two stayed in the bathroom until it became too uncomfortable, when you moved to the bed. It was a lovely evening, the storms having mellowed into a gentle rain.
Wrapped in Saeran’s arms you suddenly felt such a rush of emotions overcome you, contentment, bashfulness, love. Especially love.
You loved Saeran so much. And you always would.
Tumblr media
Vanderwood
You’d really rather not tell Vanderwood.
You two were the cynics of the group, sarcastic, unfazed, or rather you hid your general emotions to the larger group in a swath of wit and humor. You really didn’t want to tell him that you were afraid of what was essentially a fear that had outlived its purpose.
It wasn’t that you didn’t trust Vanderwood with your true feelings, indeed sometimes you felt as if Vanderwood was the only person you could trust with your true feelings, a sentiment they had reciprocated multiple times.
It was moreso you already knew how much people saw your fear as overreacting. Didn’t need your partner to join the bandwagon of slight bafflement and bemusement, even if they couldn’t help themselves.
So there you were, sitting on the couch, storm on full display, trying not to dig your head into the side of the lazyboy as Vanderwood sat typing away on their computer.
Unfortunately the storm grew more and more violent, and you quickly grew more and more uncomfortable, your plans of nonchalance having really taken a critical hit.
Before you could think of a proper excuse to go into the bedroom closet and have a bit of a scream a huge clap of thunder shook the complex and the book you’d held in your hands plummeted to the ground.
Vanderwood immediately got up and shut the blinds. “I forgot you don’t like storms.” They said, closing the last of the blinds before turning around to your startled face.
“You know I don’t like thunderstorms?!”
“Was I not supposed to?” They looked vaguely confused, and not a bit amused.
“No.” You buried your hands in your palms.
“No I was or no I wasn’t?”
“You weren’t.” You groaned. “It’s embaraassing.”
“Why should it be embarrassing? Look, MC.” They walked over to you, taking your hands in theirs. “There are a lot of embarrassing things people are in life. Of which I’m at least half of them. I cannot say a lot of things with great confidence, but I can say this. You aren’t the least bit embarrassing for having an incredibly common and practical fear.”
“A fear that should’ve died out with the invention of bricks.” You muttered.
“Perhaps. But we both know that’s not how it works.” They replied. “So don’t feel the need to hide something like that. Okay?”
You nodded and Vanderwood smiled, before giving you a hug, something which you gladly reciprocated.
It was a quiet evening, one of easy cooking and laughing at miscellaneous videos, of making fun of spy shows and swapping stories.
In the end you probably shouldn’t’ve been so surprised.
Vanderwood was an amazing partner, caring, funny, observant, loving.
Perhaps it was okay to have such a fear around them. And if it was okay with Vanderwood than everyone else would have to suck it up, because really two people’s opinions mattered to you on the fact, yours and theirs. And in this instance you’d found yourselves completely in accord.
Heyo! Can we have the nsfw hc's for Daigo's bfs? :3€ thank you in advance!!
Of course you can, my dear c: Apologies in advance for my very strong bias for my fav boy Mine, but I’ll try to be fair to everyone ^^;
Ryuji Goda:
Ryuji and Daigo have that classic enemies-to-lovers friction. That gloating victory, that simmering hatred melted away into physical attraction. So, at first, they’re all rough touch, biting and snapping and grabbing. No tenderness, no gentleness. But over time, this would cool to lazy ego-stroking and pampering. A knowing fondle, a smug tease.
Ryuji is the world’s laziest dom. I’m sorry, but he’s got a little too much of that “I’m king god and I know it” going on to put in effort most of the time. Oh, he’s happy to order you around and have you worship him, but he’s not going to make your job easier or even praise you too much for doing it, unless it’s to mock you. This isn’t to say that Ryuji’s mean, necessarily, just that he’s smug and everything’s about him.
If he ever gets around to actually fucking you and not insisting that you get him off in a way that does nothing for you, he will put in effort doing that. After all, he’d be unworthy of his exalted status if he couldn’t actually back up his claims. So he makes a point of fucking people good and hard, in a way they’ll remember. And he even makes it a point of personal pride that you enjoy it, even if that means he has to be gentle. Being strong enough to be gentle is still strength, after all. And you’ll hate him just a little bit more for the fact that he can make you feel nice and you like it.
Daigo certainly hates his smug face about it.
But the real trick is if you can get Ryuji on his back. He’s a whimpery baby when it comes to bottoming. He’s inexperienced taking it, but does enjoy it, which puts him in an awkward position, having to listen to someone else for a change. Suddenly it’s “Oh, be gentle with me!” and “Wait, slow down!” and not quite knowing what he wants anymore. It takes patience to get that far with him, but Daigo certainly think it’s worth it. Ryuji’s got an ass that won’t quit and driving into that self-congratulating asshole, no pun intended, is delightful.
Daigo prefers a more generous environment than Ryuji, but Ryuji’s stuck-up pride is appealing as a target to launch yourself at. And it is flattering that Ryuji won’t fight with you in the first place if he doesn’t think you’re worthy. It is a little warming in itself to have his attention.
In a long-established relationship, Ryuji’s pride would lose its edge, he wouldn’t feel quite so desperate to prove himself. So his teasing would be more fond and soft, less biting. Daigo would grow in confidence, able to rebuff Ryuji a bit better and lead him around if need be. Daigo sparks under Ryuji’s overbearing dominance, but only when Daigo’s trying to be dominant. Daigo’s happy to receive most of the time. It’s more the way Ryuji comports himself that is the issue. But Daigo would relax over time too, seeing Ryuji soften and open up. They could learn to be tender with each other, rather than only mock and sneer.
Mine Yoshitaka:
Fucking Mine is like driving a brand new Ferrari. It’s very sharp, very fast, very expensive. It’s beautifully designed. But it wants to be doing everything at 200 mph when most of your life is, at best, at the 60 mph speed range. And you know it’s going to break. You don’t know when, you don’t know where, but the thing is so fucking temperamental and insistent about going 200 mph that it’s just going to break, there’s nothing you can do about it, and you’ll have to get it repaired. That’s what fucking Mine is like.
Mine is an entire goddamn disaster. He’s SO hot and SO fucking on fire.
There is absolutely no way on earth Mine had ever fucked anyone before Daigo. Come on. Think about it. He’s very pretty but... psychotic. And also convinced that other people are, I don’t know, dust mites. Is fucking you going to get Mine power? No? Then why the fuck are we still talking?
So no, Mine never fucked anyone, may not have even been interested in sex at all before Daigo.
But he’s... oh god, he’s gotta be The Best at Everything. You can see where this is going.
Mine’s SO DESPERATE to prove how good he is at sex, how willing, how flexible, but he’s instantly overwhelmed by everything and we have to scale back his insane plans to... how ‘bout we hold hands in bed for awhile, okay? Maybe your blood pressure will go down some.
Daigo has to, somehow, contain Mine’s insane need to please and be The Best while also convincing him that it’s okay to take things one step at a time and slow down sometimes. He has to hold his hand through everything and show him, literally, all of the steps. Just kissing might paralyze Mine for a day, to say nothing of removing clothes or touching each other.
That’s okay, Daigo can be patient. Apoplectically insane doesn’t do it for everyone, but... there’s something charming, for Daigo, in the way that Mine will absolutely break if you’re cute to him, if you’re nice to him. It’s so little effort for Daigo to be nice, and he gets SUCH a response in return. That alone is satisfying. It’s okay that Mine needs to move inches at a time or he’ll explode. It’s okay that every little thing sets Mine off, it’s kinda adorable. As long as you can be patient and don’t have to look after him every second, it’s actually pretty functional.
After a lot of coaching and patience, their first time is... still a total disaster. But no one had to go to the hospital and Mine only wound up crying for an hour, so Daigo’s taking this as a good sign.
Slowly, after a lot of therapy and socializing him with other people, Mine calms down. Over time, Mine can become functional and even very skilled. As Mine would never accept “adequate” for anything. And Daigo can’t fault him for his ambition and discipline even if it is... terrifying to watch how fast he develops.
After the initial volcano of embarrassment and feelings of panic and unworthiness, once he finally fucking calms down, Mine becomes flawlessly competent. Daigo’s actually little worried that Mine could get him off in three strokes if put to it. He’s careful to absolutely never under any circumstances ask Mine to demonstrate.
And Mine’s own desires grow apace with his skills. Mine’s main kink is endurance. He’s sort of similar to Majima’s exhaustion and over-stimulation gambit, but it’s a little different. Majima wants to be fucked until he can’t think anymore. Mine wants to prove his stamina, he wants to be the greatest physical specimen possible. So marathons are truly his thing. Daigo struggles to keep up.
Fortunately, Mine is an absolutely mewling bottom, hungry for any attention. He wants to be stretched to his limits whenever possible, pushed to the utmost, but he’d never forgive himself if Daigo isn’t also enjoying himself. He learns to balance the two, to make sure Daigo is having a good time and not ask... more than is humanly possible.
Even so, fisting is not out of the question for him and Daigo has, on occasion, worn a cock sheath. Mine’s a bit of a size queen. Again, the stamina thing. He’s... he’s insatiable in almost all possible ways.
Mine will also gladly fuck Daigo! He has never refused a request from his one and only beloved and he never will. But Mine has no impulse to dominate. He doesn’t need to prove anything, he already knows he is the best there is, and he doesn’t need to serve to derive his sense of purpose and meaning. He will serve, but it is only to make Daigo happy. His pride is taken from how happy he can make Daigo, rather than anything about the act itself. His intense attention is borderline unbearable, but Daigo has gently coached him into where to direct his attention and how much intensity is needed. Mine is a ready and willing student, trying hard to be the right amount of too much, rather than monstrously too much. So he’s always excited to be ordered by Daigo and do what he likes. Daigo, for his part, has never been disappointed.
Daigo, despite the incredible emotional and physical exhaustion of fucking Mine, does enjoy it. Mine does push him to his limits and asks for so much, but... the loopy, satisfied smile on Mine’s drained face when he finally lays back, when he’s at last loose and pliable... it fills Daigo with such a sense of satisfaction and pride and love. Whenever Daigo doubts himself, whenever he’s unsure, he remembers that the most perfectionist man on earth is head-over-heels in love with him and begs to be fucked every night... nothing comes close to being that kind of ego trip. And Mine is even genuinely reassuring when Daigo needs that too.
It’s a disastrous beginning and it’s rough and rocky for awhile, but... in time, their dynamic becomes a smooth beat-counterbeat of lust and confidence, doubt and reassurance. They support each other in their weak spots and they love each other for it.
Shinada Tatsuo:
Shinada is like a breath of fresh air after the work of those last two. He is neither on fire nor selfish. A welcome relief for Daigo, if he fucked the last two. Finally someone he doesn’t have to put in all the work for.
Shinada is the definition of easy going. Whatever you want to do, he’s up for it. And with his predilection for sex workers, safe to say he’s not a virgin by any means. No awkward hand holding with him.
Shinada is not much of a dom, way too lackadaisical to take charge, but he is very warm and giving. So if Daigo just wanted to be taken care of today, he’d do his best to comply. He doesn’t have Mine’s intensity or stamina nor Ryuji’s forceful personality, but he’s sincere and generous and that goes a long way.
Shinada is far more willing to be acted upon though. He’s lazy in the exact opposite way of Ryuji. Shinada would love to be fingered and fucked and taken care of, while putting in very little effort to achieve this. He’s happy to receive your energy and fierce determination. And at this point in Daigo’s life, sometimes he needs to take charge, just for the sense of control over something. Shinada’s got no problem with that and it’s reassuring and satisfying to know that Shinada’s happy with whatever you have to give him. Not having to put in a major effort or think about what will make him happiest makes Daigo’s job a lot easier.
Not to say that Daigo wants to just use Shinada and leave him. Daigo’s very kind and cuddly with Shinada, eager to appreciate him simply because he’s so low effort. Shinada thinks it’s cute the way Daigo tries to pamper him.
Daigo does sometimes push Shinada for more, ask him to go harder, to be rougher, but it isn’t really in Shinada’s make up to be forceful and intense. He’s up for anything so he never blinks if Daigo asks for something a little unusual or wants to experiment with something new, but at the same time, there’s no drive in him for any particular thing.
Shinada’s main kink is hands, using his hands or hands being used on him. Hands are still his best method of communication, still dexterous and tactile, even if he’s out of practice these days. Also toys, strangely. He loves self-service toys or partner toys. They take some of the effort off of any one person to perform a certain way while still making sure everyone’s satisfied. No much ruffles him, but he will get a little blushy if you praise him a lot.
Daigo... loves to be taken care of. But also likes to fuck people into whimpery piles. He’s just so tired at this point. Sometimes he misses Ryuji’s demands or Mine’s intensity. But right now, he likes taking it easy with a sweet, pretty boy who like to lay in the sun and do nothing. He’s easy to pamper and his eyes go wide for just a little love and care. Daigo likes making someone happy and not having the fear that it will all go horribly wrong all too soon.
Shinada sees him get sad sometimes and hugs him close, murmurs gently and keeps their hands close. He doesn’t mind that Daigo’s hurt and has been through a lot. He’s happy to be with him now and to make him happy in whatever ways he can.
You ever just create an au crossover with two fandoms you’re currently in? Just cuz? No real plot or idea, just a concept? Like marmite and chocolate. “Idk how the fuck these two got in even 5 meters of each other, but it actually tastes nice????”
Well, I present to you;
Tumblr media
Yeah, idk either, but I loved the design so I’m posting it. Fun fact; I drew this lying on my side, my drawing arm under my body, and using my finger on my small phone. Am I proud I made something like this in these conditions? Yes. Should I be? Not really. But oh well.
Also, the reason I’m posting this now is cuz I just created something so cute I had to post it.
Tumblr media
If anyone wants to use these designs, go right ahead! I’m probably not gonna go further. And if someone wants to create an in-depth miraculous x teenwolf crossover, feel free. My only aim with this post was show cute fox stiles, and get people inspired.
I do have a small narrative if anyone wants to use it, but it’s not in-depth or even finished, so don’t feel obliged to. The story is like so;
-Trixx’s miraculous has been lost from the miracle box (instead of Nooroo & Duusuu’s), it gets into the hands of someone bad -like a boss- and when he’s defeated, another bad person gets the miraculous. The cycle passing from bad people to bad people continues for years.
-Because of the nature of the fox miraculous, most people who wield it use it very discreetly. So there’s no coverage of a “fox supervillain” in the media. However, if you were to ask someone involved within criminal activity; they’d tell you it was a legend to scare gangs into submission by the police.
-Eventually, a mercenary with the fox miraculous comes to California to lay low for a bit, however, he’s killed by a druid for a sacrifice. The miraculous is left behind on the scene, since the Druid is unaware of what it really is.
-Stiles, who had been looking for clues on the new killer, comes across the now vacant home. It’s obvious that there was a fight, so he starts to record things and collect evidence for himself. He luckily isn’t obliged to tell the police since technically, he shouldn’t even know there’s a killer. So technically to the police, it’s just robbery, not withholding information. In his endeavour, he finds the fox miraculous -thinking it’s a tad tacky, but he never underestimates the small things. Not after his friend was bitten by a werewolf and he got drawn into the weird supernatural world.
-once he gets home it takes him hours of filtering through evidence before he gets the the necklace. It’s at that point it activates and Trixx emerges. It’s not like “AAAAA WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU”, it’s more like “... I didn’t sign up for this, I should really consider just leaving this godforsaken town.”
-Trixx explains what a miraculous is how it can give him amazing powers. But the first thing Stiles asks is who was the guy who had it in the house he found the necklace in. They hesitantly explain he was a mercenary, but they can’t reveal his name.
-Stiles takes a while but he gets exited about having this unique insight on this case. Now they could possibly stop the killer before anyone else has to die. However, he doesn’t actually want to use the miraculous power since “I can’t waste time trying to play super hero! There’s a killer out there and if we needed an enhanced individual to get them, we’d have the werewolves out there. No, for this case we need a detective.”
-Trixx was very surprised when they heard Stiles explain he didn’t want to use the miraculous, but the more they listened, the more they understood the reasoning. Inwardly, they were immensely relieved. They could finally take a break from using their power for bad, and now could maybe even help this little kit out in doing some good.
~time skip as Trixx and Stiles become closer while on the case~
~there’s a point where Stiles is stuck in a the back of a truck with no way out. There was reason to believe the truck belonged to the killer, so Stiles invited himself in (closing the door so no one could see him snooping), and his hunch is right when he sees freezers full of body parts. What he didn’t anticipate though, was that the truck would start moving.
~With rising tensions, Stiles desperately-and yet fruitlessly- tries to find a way out, unless he wanted jump out the back of a moving vehicle at 60+ mph.
~Trixx advises him to use the miraculous, but he’s adamant against it, saying he can find a way out himself. Saying things like, “Scott would find a way.” And “Derek would be disappointed if I used such a cheap trick to get out of this.”
~Eventually, when the supposed killer starts to get to a stop, Stiles finally gives in and uses the miraculous.
~cue typical transformation scene~
~Stiles doesn’t have time to question the outfit before the killer parks, gets out of the car, and seemingly starts to go for the back door.
~Stiles tries to do what Trixx had told him before (regarding the fox miraculous power), and attempts to make himself invisible in the corner by making a mirage of an empty corner in front of him.
~It works and the killer doesn’t suspect a thing. Luckily Stiles was able to escape the truck when the killer went to put the first box in a warehouse. He makes sure to take many photos and notes about where he is, and what the warehouse is like. It’s not in the main town, but it isn’t far. Since it’s surrounded by forests, Stiles was able to slip away from the situation undetected.
~Stiles isn’t stupid, he isn’t going to face a serial killer he knows nothing about, and without his pack. Furthermore, he feels wrong for using Trixx, since they wanted to have a break from being used. So as soon as he was out of view of the warehouse, he powered down to begin a probably long walk back to town.
~Trixx was obviously a bit worn out, but all together happy that Stiles was ok. They found it weird when the kit started to apologise to Trixx, saying how it felt wrong to use someone like that. They found it soothing to have such a respectful miraculous holder, but they assured him it was perfectly fine and that that was the point of the miraculous anyway.
~hours of walking later and Stiles finally gets home, about just as exhausted as Trixx was. He asked if there was anyway to regain the kwami’s energy, which they replied that food would be good enough. So he let them look through all the food he had to see if they had a preference. They didn’t seem that picky, but when they saw a pack of blueberries, they instantly lit up and went for it. Stiles was going to ask if they wanted anything more, but the fox sped off cackling to themself.
~end~
And that’s all I got for more detailed scenes. I guess the general consensus from then on is that Stiles and Trixx go on with the case, and get the entire pack to ambush the killer to take him down. He only uses the fox miraculous if it’s the only way, or if using it would prevent possible casualties.
But as for more hc about it, I guess Stiles wouldn’t be able to tell the pack -secret identities n’ all that- and I’d assume he’d be hesitant to be Vulpy in front of the pack. But for embarrassment or just not wanting to open that can of worms, I have no clue.
I think Stiles would strike up the deal “If you agree to help me on this case, I’ll find and return you to your guardian”. Even though Trixx has no say in whether he can use them or not, it’s a deal they can’t pass up.
Also, just saying, if Stiles got akumatised he would call himself “Nogitsune” ;) which is a good next drawing idea, actually.
Like I said, if anyone wants redo any of this and completely change it, feel free! The idea of all the pack having a miraculous would be very interesting.
[I said I wouldn’t develop it more but I’m a sleep deprived idiot that was like “wouldn’t it be fun to make a animation/animatic of the transformation” and actually did it. I hate myself, but look out for it on my page, I only have a few last things to do.]
On the left, what Rubin expected to see: stars orbiting the outskirts of a galaxy moving slower than those near the center. On the right, what was observed: the stars on the outside moving at the same speed as the center.
Dark matter holds our universe together. No one knows what it is.
If you go outside on a dark night, in the darkest places on Earth, you can see as many as 9,000 stars. They appear as tiny points of light, but they are massive infernos. And while these stars seem astonishingly numerous to our eyes, they represent just the tiniest fraction of all the stars in our galaxy, let alone the universe.
The beautiful challenge of stargazing is keeping this all in mind: Every small thing we see in the night sky is immense, but what’s even more immense is the unseen, the unknown.
I’ve been thinking about this feeling — the awesome, terrifying feeling of smallness, of the extreme contrast of the big and small — while reporting on one of the greatest mysteries in science for Unexplainable, a new Vox podcast pilot you can listen to below.
It turns out all the stars in all the galaxies, in all the universe, barely even begin to account for all the stuff of the universe. Most of the matter in the universe is actually unseeable, untouchable, and, to this day, undiscovered.
Scientists call this unexplained stuff “dark matter,” and they believe there’s five times more of it in the universe than normal matter — the stuff that makes up you and me, stars, planets, black holes, and everything we can see in the night sky or touch here on Earth. It’s strange even calling all that “normal” matter, because in the grand scheme of the cosmos, normal matter is the rare stuff. But to this day, no one knows what dark matter actually is.
“I think it gives you intellectual and kind of epistemic humility — that we are simultaneously, super insignificant, a tiny, tiny speck of the universe,” Priya Natarajan, a Yale physicist and dark matter expert, said on a recent phone call. “But on the other hand, we have brains in our skulls that are like these tiny, gelatinous cantaloupes, and we have figured all of this out.”
The story of dark matter is a reminder that whatever we know, whatever truth about the universe we have acquired as individuals or as a society, is insignificant compared to what we have not yet explained.
It’s also a reminder that, often, in order to discover something true, the first thing we need to do is account for what we don’t know.
This accounting of the unknown is not often a thing that’s celebrated in science. It doesn’t win Nobel Prizes. But, at least, we can know the size of our ignorance. And that’s a start.
But how does it end? Though physicists have been trying for decades to figure out what dark matter is, the detectors they built to find it have gone silent year after year. It makes some wonder: Have they been chasing a ghost? Dark matter might not be real. Instead, there could be something more deeply flawed in physicists’ understanding of gravity that would explain it away. Still, the search, fueled by faith in scientific observations, continues, despite the possibility that dark matter may never be found.
To learn about dark matter is to grapple with, and embrace, the unknown.
Scientists are, to this day, searching for dark matter because they believe it is there to find. And they believe so largely because of Vera Rubin, an astronomer who died in 2016 at age 88.
Flash-forward to the late 1960s, and she’s at the Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona, doing exactly what she did in that childhood bedroom: tracking the motion of stars.
This time, though, she has a cutting-edge telescope and is looking at stars in motion at the edge of the Andromeda Galaxy. Just 40 years prior, Edwin Hubble had determined, for the first time, that Andromeda was a galaxy outside of our own, and that galaxies outside our own even existed. With one observation, Hubble doubled the size of the known universe.
By 1960, scientists were still asking basic questions in the wake of this discovery. Like: How do galaxies move?
Rubin and her colleague Kent Ford were at the observatory doing this basic science, charting how stars are moving at the edge of Andromeda. “I guess I wanted to confirm Newton’s laws,” Rubin said in an archival interview with science historian David DeVorkin.
Per Newton’s equations, the stars in the galaxy ought to move like the planets in our solar system do. Mercury, the closest planet to the sun, orbits very quickly, propelled by the sun’s gravity to a speed of around 106,000 mph. Neptune, far from the sun, and less influenced by its gravity, moves much slower, at around 12,000 mph.
The same thing ought to happen in galaxies too: Stars near the dense, gravity-rich centers of galaxies ought to move faster than the stars along the edges.
But that wasn’t what Rubin and Ford observed. Instead, they saw that the stars along the edge of Andromeda were going the same speed as the stars in the interior. “I think it was kind of like a ‘what the fuck’ moment,” Yeager says. “It was just so different than what everyone had expected.”
The data pointed to an enormous problem: The stars couldn’t just be moving that fast on their own. At those speeds, the galaxy should be ripping itself apart like an accelerating merry-go-round with the brake turned off. To explain why this wasn’t happening, these stars needed some kind of extra gravity out there acting like an engine. There had to be a source of mass for all that extra gravity. (For a refresher: Physicists consider gravity to be a consequence of mass. The more mass in an area, the stronger the gravitational pull.)
The data suggested that there was a staggering amount of mass in the galaxy that astronomers simply couldn’t see. “As they’re looking out there, they just can’t seem to find any kind of evidence that it’s some normal type of matter,” Yeager says. It wasn’t black holes; it wasn’t dead stars. It was something else generating the gravity needed to both hold the galaxy together and propel those outer stars to such fast speeds.
“I mean, when you first see it, I think you’re afraid of being … you’re afraid of making a dumb mistake, you know, that there’s just some simple explanation,” Rubin later recounted. Other scientists might have immediately announced a dramatic conclusion based on this limited data. But not Rubin. She and her collaborators dug in and decided to do a systematic review of the star speeds in galaxies.
Rubin and Ford weren’t the first group to make an observation of stars moving fast at the edge of a galaxy. But what Rubin and her collaborators are famous for is verifying the finding across the universe. “She [studied] 20 galaxies, and then 40 and then 60, and they all show this bizarre behavior of stars out far in the galaxy, moving way, way too fast,” Yeager explains.
This is why people say Rubin ought to have won a Nobel Prize (the prizes are only awarded to living recipients, so she will never win one). She didn’t “discover” dark matter. But the data she collected over her career made it so the astronomy community had to reckon with the idea that most of the mass in the universe is unknown.
By 1985, Rubin was confident enough in her observations to declare something of an anti-eureka: announcing not a discovery, but a huge absence in our collective knowledge. “Nature has played a trick on astronomers,” she’s paraphrased as saying at an International Astronomical Union conference in 1985, “who thought we were studying the universe. We now know that we were studying only a small fraction of it.”
To this day, no one has “discovered” dark matter. But Rubin did something incredibly important: She told the scientific world about what they were missing.
In the decades since this anti-eureka, other scientists have been trying to fill in the void Rubin pointed to. Their work isn’t complete. But what they’ve been learning about dark matter is that it’s incredibly important to the very structure of our universe, and that it’s deeply, deeply weird.
Since Rubin’s WTF moment in the Arizona desert, more and more evidence has accumulated that dark matter is real, and weird, and accounts for most of the mass in the universe.
“Even though we can’t see it, we can still infer that dark matter is there,” Kathryn Zurek, a Caltech astrophysicist, explains. “Even if we couldn’t see the moon with our eyes, we would still know that it was there because it pulls the oceans in different directions — and it’s really very similar with dark matter.”
Scientists can’t see dark matter directly. But they can see its influence on the space and light around it. The biggest piece of indirect evidence: Dark matter, like all matter that accumulates in large quantities, has the ability to warp the very fabric of space.
“You can visualize dark matter as these lumps of matter that create little potholes in space-time,” Natarajan says. “All the matter in the universe is pockmarked with dark matter.”
When light falls into one of these potholes, it bends like light does in a lens. In this way, we can’t “see” dark matter, but we can “see” the distortions it produces in astronomers’ views of the cosmos. From this, we know dark matter forms a spherical cocoon around galaxies, lending them more mass, which allows their stars to move faster than what Newton’s laws would otherwise suggest.
How Big is Our Galaxy, the Milky Way?
When we talk about the enormity of the cosmos, it’s easy to toss out big numbers – but far harder to wrap our minds around just how large, how far and how numerous celestial bodies like exoplanets – planets beyond our solar system – really are.
So. How big is our Milky Way Galaxy?
youtube
We use light-time to measure the vast distances of space.
It’s the distance that light travels in a specific period of time. Also: LIGHT IS FAST, nothing travels faster than light.
Tumblr media
How far can light travel in one second? 186,000 miles. It might look even faster in metric: 300,000 kilometers in one second. See? FAST.
Tumblr media
How far can light travel in one minute? 11,160,000 miles. We’re moving now! Light could go around the Earth a bit more than 448 times in one minute.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Earth, how long does it take light from the Sun to reach our planet? 8.3 minutes. (It takes 43.2 minutes for sunlight to reach Jupiter, about 484 million miles away.) Light is fast, but the distances are VAST.
Tumblr media
In an hour, light can travel 671 million miles. We’re still light-years from the nearest exoplanet, by the way. Proxima Centauri b is 4.2 light-years away. So… how far is a light-year? 5.8 TRILLION MILES.
Tumblr media
A trip at light speed to the very edge of our solar system – the farthest reaches of the Oort Cloud, a collection of dormant comets way, WAY out there – would take about 1.87 years.
Our galaxy contains 100 to 400 billion stars and is about 100,000 light-years across!
One of the most distant exoplanets known to us in the Milky Way is Kepler-443b. Traveling at light speed, it would take 3,000 years to get there. Or 28 billion years, going 60 mph. So, you know, far.
SPACE IS BIG.
My son saw her in the library in Buffalo in the town he was in it's just outside Buffalo and he looked at her and she was looking back kind of smiled a little and then start moving and he's going after and she wasn't looking she's trying to speeding up in the library and she started running and I don't know what she was doing there too many people for him or and by the time you hit the door is going 30 miles an hour he went flying through the door and the door kind of broke it didn't break the glass but it broke the piston and you heard it pop and thought people are shooting and they all got down and it was hilarious okay cuz I couldn't believe how fast he was going it's hard to tell too running by some people going 20 mph I am and it looks fast but not that fast you got outside and he's hitting 60 and she's running away and going up the hill he hit like 75 and it started slowing down and couldn't see her and people witnessed it and then talk to him the way down said what happened I thought I saw someone and they drove away they started laughing they drove away and also they start saying this going kind of faster I said I'm winded and a little dizzy and it kept walking and they start laughing it doesn't look it it was one of the funner days of our life but this is one of the reasons why she had made the song happen. And it's also the start of the Year of the cat and he told Aaron Mike and after he pulled the gun out and he said okay that's what it's for and that makes sense you saw me chaser meow and she said what is she she's the other cat but they're saying it about us that really I was chasing her to try and talk to her and also he goes oh that was wise it's wicked smart and it never works. He started laughing and he's laughing and he wrote y o c on a piece of paper woke up didn't know it was was calling people and they said we think it's Year of the cat and they started working on it
It says 2023 is a finale and also need started saying oh no but they forgot about it and all sorts of stuff started clicking but really he was moving fast and he's trying to talk to her
Thor Freya
I ran away that's what happened I was acting like a kitty cat no rat no he says a mouse that's what they call us so I sort of get that I'm playing cat and mouse but they both call this cats cuz we're moving like hell and they couldn't believe it and they're checking blood and stuff didn't find anything and people are trying to figure out how to do that you wouldn't believe it people watching you walk the whole time I'm wondering why he walks so far and how I need to find the whole time it was fun for me no that's kind of a nightmare this is a nightmare too it's similar but wow what a day and he's saying yeah what a day I get that you'll have to try harder so I guess I'm going to get caught at one point
Day 43 (leave Cabeza Prieta Nat'l Wildlife Refuge and drive to KOFA Nat'l Wildlife Refuge)
Tumblr media
We decided to take a quick drive into Organ Pipe Nat'l Monument and then backtrack to be on our way to KOFA.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a lovely drive and the Saguaros were so plentiful - look how close together they're growing. BUT - we saw more Organ Pipe Cactus right around our site at Cabeza Prieta then in the 25 miles of Organ Pipe Nat'l Monument we drove through Hmmmm.
Thoughts About Pictures
As always on our drives we're frustrated to see all this beauty and not have a camera that can actually capture it - the color, the expanse, the grandeur.  Just one example -  with our eyes we saw these really cool brown rock formations. Some were as small as 20 ft high, some maybe 60 ft. They were spaced closely together and each was a different shape - weirdly like they were made from someone pouring liquid brown stuff in blops and globs. See, you have no idea what we're talking about, and the camera just couldn't capture what we saw. In this kind of environment the camera just sees blue sky and the cool brown formations would have looked like nothing. Plus, when we see something cool there's rarely enough time to take a picture before we've passed it. We're sorry.
What's special about the Southwest is that we're complete surrounded by stunning views, always. In suburbs and cities, even in many rural places besides the Southwest, it's rarely what's out the back or the side windows. There are plenty of fine things to look at, they're just usual only what's in front. In the Southwest we wish we had eyes in the back, and side, of our head.
Arrive KOFA
KOFA is named for one of the area's most notable mines - the King of Arizona Gold Mine. All the mountains are that beautiful brown rock but the first road we tried in the flat areas was awfully beige and dusty after the green of Cabeza Prieta. Plus there were a decent number of people (probably looked like even more because it was so flat and so few plants so everyone was visible for quite a distance. All in all, it looked pretty uninviting (and there no useful internet, and the further we drove the less service there was).
But look at all the mines and other interesting sites on the map!
Tumblr media
So we kept driving, very slowly, a super bumpy road. Eventually we got to some hills, and then a sign for KOFA (so the rest of what we'd seen wasn't even KOFA?). And then, over a hill, and it opened into miles and miles of mountain ranges against the azure sky.
We bet we were looking as far as 20 miles. Breathtaking. Wish we hadn't gone over that hill because we'd have been happy to leave the flat, populated, dust because of no internet (after 4 days of barely any, and most times none I needed to work). We turned around to drive back and hope to find something for that fit all our current needs on one of the other 5 roads into KOFA.
Tumblr media
On our way out (darkness coming) we decided we'd see if we could find some hidden area on the flat behind a bush and hope for a smidgen of internet. We spied a place that might work and drove up over a mound of dirt to move as far away from the road in as possible. This is how we usually begin the search for cool places to make camp. We drove a bit, then walked to find a way through the brush and washes but finally decided to go on to the next road in.
Driving out onto the road the way we came in, our front wheels went slowly over the dirt build up and then when the rear ones went over there was a big plop, and a thud. We were stuck.
The last 10 ft of the motor home was almost resting on the dirt - you're wondering what the problem was, why couldn't we just keep driving? What you don't see is the spare tire that hangs under the motorhome. Or the black water and gray water tanks. Or various valves. All stuck in the dirt now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
About a 100 yds plus away were some people with a truck next to a pretty big trailer. Looked good. They tried to pull us out from behind (back up because forward would be trying to fight the spare tire, etc). Unfortunately all that happened was that the other people's truck rear tires dug into the dirt. Meanwhile we are perpendicular in the road. Luckily as long as you are a narrow truck you can get through and a few did (with condolences uttered). But if you were a motorhome, nope. It was getting darker and we were picturing staying awake all night directing traffic.
Possible way out #2 - now in the dark a truck with a UTV trailer came down the road. When we directed them to squeeze by they asked to help since they had 4 wheel drive. All of us wearing masks and a good amount of digging, they pulled us backwards while Bill drove in reverse to give some momentum and......we were free! Much "woo hooing"!
Not to be detered, after many thank you's we drove 10 miles to the next road in. We found no people (at least no fires, no RV light, no lanterns) - that was a plus but we also found an even bumpier road, no internet and what we assumed was similar flat, dusty landscape. We looked at each other at 7:30pm and said "We're 20 miles at most from Quartzsite.  Let's just drive there and up the 7 miles of bumpy, 10 mph for us, road to the super empty desert at the foot of the mountains that we loved 2 years ago". After finding so many cool places this year we had decided no need to go back to the area near Quartzsite, but now...it was at least a place we knew we'd be happy and alone there.
Next year we'll try Verizon for our burner phone and go back to find an empty place to explore those mines in KOFA.
