Hmmm. Okay, so... I think this one's a Dragonfruit fic, actually. Maybe a "Historical" AU.

Red is a prince on his way to, say, a celebration the Monkey King is throwing. Mei is also attending, as part of her grandfather Ao Lie's entourage. The two groups meet in the mountains, but a landslide leaves Mei and Red split off from the rest of the group. They have to make their own way to the party to reunite with their families.

They have to disguise themselves, because they're notable enough that if they go out and about as themselves, they'll draw attention. And Red's hair -- long enough to reach his hips, glowing like embers -- is a dead giveaway. Mei carefully braids it up and they hide it beneath her hood.

As they travel, people mistake them for a pair of young newlyweds, down on their luck but making it work. It's... Easier to roll with that than to argue. And, after awhile... Well, it starts to feel more accurate than not...
