Deep dive: Diaspro! Questions
Diaspro as a character is a mess and makes no sense.
Obviously this is because the writers for each season just use Diaspro for whatever suits their plot idea. It’s inconsistent writing and that’s the whole explanation. This shows the low quality writing in our show, but that’s also one of the things that makes our show great. If the writers can do anything they want with Diaspro, so can you!
So let’s look at what Rainbow generously left to us to fill in.
The show leaves out Diaspro and Sky’s entire history. How well did they know each other as kids? Did they like each other? When did they get engaged? Did they have any say in it or did their parents just arrange the whole thing? Not that it’d really matter since they were too young to make a lifetime decision, but it would change the feeling of the thing if lil Sky had said he wanted to marry Diaspro versus if Erendor just set the whole thing up without asking the kids.
Is Diaspro a princess or what? In 4kids season 2 in the wackiest episode she’s the queen of Isis and oppresses her people by forcing them to buy fashion, but in every other episode and version she’s just a girl who works in the palace on Eraklyon or attends school. A noble, with class and money, but not ruler of any realm. But she is still called “princess” so who knows. Is she waiting to inherit the throne of the realm of Isis? Is Isis a continent or country on the planet Eraklyon, making her important but not as much as the ruling family of the planet? Is “princess’ just a term of respect for a noble not a sign that she’s heir to anything?
In ye Olde times some nobles practiced fosterage: children from one royal household would be raised in another, in hopes that they’d get along and be less likely to get in wars with each other when they grew up. Or she could be a hostage. Royals have done that too, bring the child of the enemy into your household and your enemy isn’t gonna try anything.
What happened in season 3? If Diaspro does love Sky, why did she decide that having him as a zombie who doesn’t really love her back would be fine? If a zombie prince would do it seems like ANY prince would do and she could be off looking for a prince who will like her back. I like the “Valtor’s influence” explanation for this. It’s not explicitly shown but being enchanted and then freed would answer the next question…
How did Diaspro get her job after the crimes she committed? Did she convince everyone she was better now? Does she have some kind of hold over the royal family? Was everyone enchanted to forget? Is she too important to send to jail? Or has she been IN jail since season 3 and now is out having served her time? Whatever happened seems to have left Diaspro a nicer person. She’s again acting like she loves Sky and wants to be with him, but isn’t evil about it. She’s still the stuck up mean girl who enjoys snubbing Bloom though.
In the next season Diaspro instantly asks to join the Trix in their pursuit of evil! But what happened between the seasons? Diaspro left her job at the palace and went to school. Why? Was she trying to move on with her life? Or was she learning magic to get rid of Bloom? Was she turning toward the light or the darkness? She heads straight for the darkness and tries to murder Bloom, but when that fails she just vanishes. doesn’t try again, doesn’t beg the Trix for a second chance. Did she realize at the last minute that she went too far and she doesn’t want to be truly evil?
And biggest question, why does she think even for a second that Sky would fall for someone who murderized his girlfriend? I don’t think there’s any sensible answer to that one so we’ll just move on.
What happened after that? How did Diaspro convince the people that she was trying to help Bloom not kill her? She did it somehow, we must assume, since she’s back at the palace in season 8. She sees a chance to spend time with Sky and jumps on it, dragging him along on a fake mission.
Why doesn’t Diaspro transform? Has she lost her powers? Were they stripped from her for her crimes?
What’s going to happen next for our messed-up princess? She has a pet now! Or a friend or an evil minion. Will she use her new unicorn power to set herself up as a villainess and try to take over Eraklyon? She could go after Sky like half the villainesses in Sailor Moon go after Tuxedo Mask! Or will having a pet to care for help her understand that real love has to go both ways?
And there we leave Diaspro, with a chance to become good or evil… depending on what the season nine writers need her to be!
