mao mainly intrigues me because its a battle shonen that seems incredibly averse to punishment, while being chock full of it <-and this is something that it is consistently self-aware of (mainly because the main 2 are the ones most resistant to the thought of doling it out while everyone else is the same to varying degrees ((example: mei doesnt revel in her kodoku pit like a supervillain. some part of her is repelled by it even as she wishes for and chooses to do it)))

#havent finished iy but from what i can tell its iy but more thought through #bc the focus is more on humans than yokai that are like humans but not <-complicates shit & i dont remember iy handling it with #much thought #mao manga #thought more about it bc im watching the main chara of kny decapitating oni that are very human shaped no problem #and the further you get into mao the more intentional nanoka/mao's hesitation to kill / disapproval of torture is #'disapproval of torture' lmao putting it like that its like. loll #but relevant to the era and hopefully relevant to the present in a different way #this is in a lot of action shonen but idk #mao feels like its going about it differently than im used to (and being more insistent about it)
