Hold on....so Belos was gradually losing control of his human form over the centuries and the Collector probably mentioned that at some point it would be lost to him completely. So like....were the grimwalkers just intended to be like....his backup body? Like if his form happened to up and kick the bucket, he'd have a spare vessel on hand? Was that the only point of building these fucking guys?

Prompt request if your up to it (kinda specific idk how I came up with it). You know the idea that Peter steals the Avenger's food when they don't yet know who he is? I was thinking if he were ever stealing Thor's poptarts (or whatever other food) and Thor decided to put Mjolnir on top, maybe record footage of it at night, and Peter is half asleep while moving the hammer and taking the pop tarts leaving everyone watching him super confused at the whole situation. Weird I know but I thought this could be super funny, do with it what you'd like.

“I know the hazing rituals for the Avengers would probably be a ride or die but this is just ridiculous,” Peter says.  

“It’s punishment,” Mr. Stark tells him. 

All in all, it’s pretty terrible punishment. Peter had been caught with his hand in the cookie jar—or the poptart box, in this very specific case—no less than three times in the past mouth which, yeah. Peter can’t really say he was the best at sneaking around but, to be fair, it wasn’t like he knew the poptarts were Thor’s specifically. 

Following a very important Avengers level meeting that involved the entire team, the conclusion to protect Thor’s poptarts was not to write his name on them like any sensible person but instead to take his very large and very magical hammer and leave it on a box of poptarts so Peter could no longer access them. 

Which is the exact scene that Peter Parker walked into on that early Sunday morning after taking a car to the side and getting smashed around by the lizard. Devastated seems a little dramatic to describe the feelings Peter experienced upon realization, but there had been nothing he’d been looking to more than taking a poptart and possibly a nap. And as cool as it is to see Thor’s hammer up close, it’s currently in the way of Peter’s very important weekend cooldown that usually involves some tasty preserved parties and a bed. 

Now that won’t happen because the Avengers put Thor’s hammer on said box of poptarts. 

Still. You would think the Avengers would be more creative in their Anti-Spider-Man Stealing Mechanisms. 

Peter tells Mr. Stark as much. 

“Doesn’t need to be creative if it works,” Mr. Stark says which is more than a little hypocritical considering Mr. Stark takes the word creative to the extreme on a good day. “It’s stopping you right now, isn’t it?” 

Peter sighs with all of the exasperation of a super-powered teenager who hasn’t had food in at least two hours and a truck load of determination to spare, rolls up his nonexistent sleeves on his t-shirt, and says, “Okay. No one can say I don’t like challenges.”

“If you can put Thor’s hammer in an elevator and the elevator still moves up, then we’re working on the assumption that the hammer is only heavy when something interacts with it so—hey, Mr. Stark, could one of your suits lift it?” 

“Not with me in it,” Mr. Stark says. 

The rest of the Avengers had taken to watching Peter try and figure out the like it was some 90s soap opera—which is to say, they have been absolutely invested since the moment that Peter started writing on the whiteboard and pacing around the common room. 

“He’s still going at this?” Mr. Steve whispers to Ms. Nat. 

“He hasn’t stopped since he came here,” Ms. Nat says right back. 

Peter dutifully ignores outside conversations and scribbles his notes on the Avengers- approved whiteboard that he’d dug out of Mr. Stark’s lab for the sole purpose of trying to figure out how to free a box of poptarts from a magic hammer. “Yeah, you’re not worthy so you wouldn’t be able to lift it—”

“Thank you for the reminder, Underroos.” 

“But I’m talking about like, if it were just the suit. Hey, would FRIDAY be worthy? Could she drive a suit and lift the hammer? She’s not technically alive so maybe…Never mind, we’ll test that later. Would something like a pulley work? If I’m not directly lifting it, would that still influence the magic still? Dr. Banner, what do you think?”

“Truthfully, I have no opinion on this, Peter,” Dr. Banner says.  

“I think,” Sam says. “That you are putting way too much thought into a magic hammer.” 

“A magic hammer that’s on my food.” 

“It’s Thor’s,” Sam says. “Not yours.” 

“That hammer? I figured that was pretty obvious.” 

“Sam looks two seconds away from lunging and wringing Peter’s neck. He takes a deep breath and says, “No. The food.” 

“Minor detail,” Peter says. “Hey, do you think—”

Clint whistles. “Impressive.”

Sam’s got that mom-friend worrying look in his eyes and a hand on his cellphone already to dial emergency services or, worse, Peter’s aunt. “Is that…is that going to work?” 

“Honestly, I have no idea,” Peter says. 

‘That’ is a cumulation of nuts and pipes and bolts and various scrap metal that Peter has managed to scrape up and put together in the last two hours. It towers over the living area and into the kitchen. A roller coaster of science, compacted down into a Rube Goldberg constructed out of more than a couple thousand dollars of junk pieces and starts with a single marble that’s no bigger than a quarter. 

Peter’s done a look of cool stuff in his two years of Avengering—missions, messing around in Mr. Stark’s lab, working on top secret projects for an even more top secret government—but he’s not quite sure anything lives up to this masterful creation. 

Mr. Steve and Mr. Stark are off to the side with the rest of the Avengers who cared enough to watch him construct everything after the five hour mark. Mr. Steve leans over to Mr. Stark and whispers, almost too quiet for Peter to hear, “Should you stop him?”

“The good mentor slash guardian thing would be to stop him,” Mr. Stark says right back. “But at this point, I’m invested so no.” 

That’s about as good of permission as Peter’s ever going to get so he takes the first step and drops the marble into a pipe. From there, it moves through wood pieces, metal sculpted into ramps and tunnels and pulleys until it’s caused a cascade of reactions. It takes a solid three minutes before it nears the end and Peter can only wait with baited breath and the whole mechanism comes to a valiant conclusion and the last piece slams into the hammer and…

The hammer doesn’t move. 

Sam doesn’t even bother hiding his laugh. “Better luck next time, spider-kid.” 

Clint shrugs. “It was a good effort.” 

In science, it’s not uncommon for things not to work. Peter’s had his fair share of exploding inventions, spider webs in his face, and code that doesn’t run. It still doesn’t prepare him for the crushing disappointment that he feels upon seeing that magic hammer still sitting on a box of poptarts that he so desperately wants to free.

At this point, it’s not even about the food anymore. Peter’s too invested to not see this through some way or another. 

So he starts building and tries it again. And again. And again. 

By the time night had fallen and the starts were covered by light pollution in the heart of New York, Peter’s no closer to those poptarts than he was during the early afternoon. The rest of the Avengers had lost interest at this point—content to longue around the lobby with a movie playing in the background and an ear peeled just to make sure Peter hasn’t accidently injured himself yet. 

Eventually, Mr. Stark wanders back into the room and knocks on the wall. When Peter looks up, Mr. Stark says, “Alright, Underoors, it’s bed time.” 

“But I’m not done,” Peter says. “I’m so close, Mr. Stark!”

Mr. Stark takes in the scattered pieces of junk and the hammer still sitting atop the poptart box, unscaved and unmoved. “Uh huh. Right. Well, I’m sure it will still be there next time you stop by but it’s a school night and I don’t want to face your aunt’s wrath if I bring you home too late.” 

“But…” 

“I am sure you can thwart the poptart box some other time,” Mr. Stark says which is really just the tipping point for this entire situation. 

By the end of it, Peter’s so frustrated the he goes to yank the poptart box out from under the hammer itself, damned if the poptarts get crushed, ripped, or otherwise destroyed in the process. He puts one hand on the hammer and one hand on the box and just pulls.

It’s not the poptart box that comes loose. 

There’s a hammer in his hand that hadn’t been there before, lightweight in a way that made Peter think he had been holding a piece of paper and not an extremely destructive magic weapon. The room around him goes so quiet that a pen could be dropped and the echo would be heard all the way down the hall. 

“Oh,” Peter says. “Huh.” 

“He did not just do that,” Sam says. “Please tell me the fourteen year old did not just do that.”

Peter pivots on his heel and points the hammer at him. “I’m sixteen.” 

The rest of the Avengers are looking at him in a way that Peter can’t quite really describe in a totality. Dr. Banner has a hand over his mouth, Clint’s jaw is about as close to the ground as it can be, Ms. Nat looks somewhat amused but there’s something else there—Peter’s not fantastic at reading expressions and even less fantastic when it’s reading expressions of a superspy so he doesn’t even try there. Mr. Stark looks a bit more exasperated than surprised but it’s that exasperation when you think your kid can’t do something and are pleasantly surprised to see them succeed. Mr. Steve is standing, white-knuckled grip on the couch’s arm and eyes wide in an expression of shock that Peter’s never really seen on him before.

Peter’s surprised the Avengers a handful of times but he thinks, with the hammer in his hands and the poptart box freed, that this is situation is the best. 

“I think,” Mr. Stark says in the same tone voice he always has when he’s trying to take control of a situation where he has very little control in. “That we need Thor. Right now.”

When a fan stalks you

Gazing into his eyes you wondered what he saw when he looked at you like this. With that lazy smile lingering around his lips, the bright flame lighting up his entire face. Blinking slowly you reminded yourself of the fact that you weren’t alone, and that there were several people glancing at you as they passed by your table. Clearing your throat you tried to hide the fact that you were flustered by grabbing your napkin and slightly pressing it against your lips. Yet, the man across of you grinned, and you could tell that he knew. “Would you like some more wine?” He asked politely, being the gentleman he was. Yet, you softly shook your head, sensing the way it caused your hair to bounce around your cheeks. Even though you weren’t one to quickly turn down a sweet drink, you could tell that you’d had enough. “I’m fine. Anything more and you might as well roll me out of here by the time we leave.” You said, hearing the way he chuckled softly because of your comment. Slowly he lifted his hand and combed his fingers through his hair before lowering them towards yours where your hand rested near the middle of the table. “I’m so glad we were able to do this. It’s been way too long.” Jimin stated, his thumb calmly caressing your knuckles, causing your nerves to hum pleasantly. 

He was right, it had been way too long since the two of you had gone on a proper date. With his promotions coming up and your book coming out in less than two weeks, life had been keeping the both of you busy and away from each other. But at last you had found a little space in your crowded agenda and you had been able to plan this little dinner in a cosy restaurant at the edge of the city. When you’d been getting ready a part of you had believed that he would call you with the news he wouldn’t be able to come, that something had popped up and the two of you would have to reschedule. It wouldn’t have been the first time. It seemed as if a small part of you had already prepared itself for disappointment. Yet, here you were, and so far everything was going according to plan. “Well, I guess you can say you made up for it tonight.” You muttered, sending him a soft smile. You hated it when he felt guilty about not being able to spend much time with you, while you were almost just as busy as he was. That was just how he was, always taking the blame, even though sometimes it simply couldn’t be helped. 

While cherishing the way his hand warmed yours you let your eyes scan around the room. You didn’t know these people, but somehow you knew that most of them did know you. And not just because your boyfriend was a member of one of the most popular boybands in the world, but some might actually know you for your own success. When you’d been a child you had loved to write those small little stories about animals that could talk or friends who broke each other’s toys. You’d never imaged that now, as a grown up, you would be able to use your love for writing and storytelling as your own benefit. You still remembered the day you’d brought out your first novel, when you’d thought that all your efforts had been a waste because you’d strongly believed that no one would ever make the time to read the crap you created. Yet, a few years later you had sold millions of copies of your first trilogy and you were about to release another one for the young adult public. To say that you were excited was the least you could say. Yet, you were also scared, afraid that you wouldn’t be able to reach up to the same expectations, that your book wouldn’t be as good as the ones you had previously brought out. 

“I need to use the bathroom for a second. I’ll be right back.” Jimin suddenly muttered, and you batted your lashes at him in surprise as you tried to  get back towards the present. Quickly you shot him a smile and you watched him as he shoved back his chair and stood up. Immediately several heads turned in your direction, but he mastered in ignoring the pointy stared as he marched through the room and went in search for the bathroom. Heaving a deep sigh you leaned back against the back of your chair, gazing at the empty spot he had just left behind. You felt very happy that you were able to be here with a guy like him. Jimin had always treated you like a queen, had always made sure that you felt safe and loved even if he wasn’t around. Somehow it was almost as if he was trying to prove that he loved you more than you would ever be able to love him, but you knew that couldn’t be true. When you had first met him, you hadn’t fallen head over heels for him like everyone thought. It was after he had shown you how much effort and work he was willing to put in your relationship, how much he was willing to do to win your love, that you had started to really like him. 

He’d once told you about how he had finished one of your books in one day, and then he had come to you to tell you all the things he’d liked about it. The thing was that you loved Jimin because of everything he had done for you and all the things he made you feel. Not every single one of your friends believed that your relationship with the idol could succeed and your parents wouldn’t tell but you knew they were scared you would end up getting hurt. But a long time had passed by now, and you were still as happy as you had been when this had all started. Sighing softly you wrapped your fingers around your almost empty glass of wine. Perhaps if the two of you just went home right now the two of you would be able to continue this wonderful night at home. You tried to keep in your mischievous smile as your mind wandered to all of the things the two of you could do together. As soon as the seat in front of you was occupied again you quickly lowered your glass, before pointing your eyes on the person across of you and tempting to share your ideas. Yet, the words died away on top of your tongue as you realized that the man seated in front of you was not Jimin. You tried to keep your facial expressions in check as you thought of what to say. You had never seen this guy before, yet, he stared at you as if he knew evert single little detail of you. There was something about the look on his face that caused all the hairs on top of your arms to stand up straight.

 “Can I help you?” You asked, trying to keep your voice airy and neutral while curling your lips into a polite smile. The last thing you wanted was to make a scene in the middle of a restaurant. You didn’t need the reputation of a woman who wouldn’t at least try to be nice as you came across a stranger, even if it was during a weird situation like this. No one payed any attention to your table. The couples around you were too busy minding their own business and the waiters didn’t seem to have realized that the person sitting in front of you wasn’t the same as before. They were kept busy by the other costumers by being asked to refill wine and water, by bringing several plates of delicious looking foods towards tables all around the room. “I knew you would be here tonight! I thought I might not eve get the chance to talk to you…But it seems like he finally left.” The guy in front of you said, his voice greedy as he planted his elbows on top of the table cloth and leaned his chin inside of his hands. His penetrating stare never left you and you shifted on you chair uncomfortably as you tried to figure out what he meant. The fact that he knew exactly where you would be tonight and who you would be with scared you much worse than you would have thought possible. As an author you weren’t usually one who was followed by paparazzi or tracked by fans. Your fandom usually consisted out of introvert readers and you had never once complained about that before. 

“Put down the knife! I’ve called the police!” A woman suddenly shouted from behind the bar, and even though she didn’t look very brave, she was indeed holding a phone in hand as a prove. Several things seemed to happen at once. Suddenly your eye fell on Jimin, who had apparently just gotten back from the bathroom and who was taking in the scene in front of you. The man in front of you shouted in rage, making you whimper, though he dropped the knife before rushing out of the restaurant. You were just in time to see the last bit of him disappear through the doorway before all of a sudden someone crouched down in front of your chair. “Are you okay?” Jimin asked, looking puzzled but worried as he grabbed hold of your quivering hands. You wondered what he saw when he looked at you, how disheveled you looked. Your heart was still beating fast inside of your chest, and now that the adrenaline seemed to be fading out of your system, everything which had happened finally seemed to sink in. Someone had threatened you, someone had actually pointed a knife at you and had thought about using it on you. 

The only thing you had meant to do by writing your books was give people a place to escape, a story they could get lost in. It seemed as if some took that quite literally. You hadn’t even noticed you had started crying until Jimin quickly got up from his crouched position and hit his arms around you in a tight hug. His hold around you was careful, but strong as he brushed his hand down your hair, trying to calm you. All the plans you had made for tonight had drifted from your mind, you knew there was no way you would ever be able to put yourself over this within the next few hours. “It’s over. I’m so sorry I left you, I had no idea.” He muttered softly, stroking your arms up and down while looking you in the eye. He seemed worried, and sadness was dripping from his expression. Even through all of this, a small smile was able to settle around your lips. None of this was his fault, yet he still apologized. Taking a deep breath you forced yourself to get up and even though your legs were trembling, you managed to push your shoulders back. “I just want to go home.” You muttered, knowing that he would understand. In a matter of seconds he had wrapped his arm around your shoulders and he was guiding you out of the restaurant. You knew as long as he was here nothing would happen to you, and you were safe.

a/n: so maybe I didn't actually watch the show beyond episode three....in any case. I started writing this before I heard about the finale and so I'm just gonna pretend that only up to episode three exists. sue me.also I made up a last name for mallory. don't come at me with any canon compliance stuff. I am a dumbass. I don’t know what canon is.

The figure of a mother and a child come shambling into his path on his way to Outpost 3. There had been a slew of outpost failures at the beginning. At least ten had fallen in the initial chaos of bombfall. The rest held for a little while but soon enough more reports of fallen outposts came pouring in. The first outpost to fall after the initial blast was 12. When the news had come in, only two week after the bombs fell, Michael had barely taken notice. The outposts were never meant to last all that long anyway, a year maybe two. Just mid-tier new-money assholes who thought they were buying security but really they were throwing money in a pit. The next to fall was 23 and then 30 after only month. Then 31 through 44 in one fell swoop. Spread across ten countries and thousands of miles, their lights all go out at once. That's when someone starts noticing. They send a couple squads out. They either come back with nothing or they don't come back at all.

By the time concerns about the outposts fall to Michael, he's practically jumping at the chance to get away from the insufferable rich assholes he’s had to endure for the last year. As it turns out, the apocalypse is a lot less unholy sanction and more...red tape. Michael is young but he wasn’t a fool. He knew what ending the world would entail. He had been more than prepared for the pain and the screams of anguish. He had never been squeamish about blood or violence, those things all had come so naturally to him. But what he hadn’t expected was the sheer boredom once the dust fell. Surely the apocalypse should be a little more fun. He's not quite sure what he expects to find in Outpost 3. It's the only one left that still consistently attempts contact with the Cooperative. At the very least, it should provide some entertainment.

He had seen the three figures through the haze, had known what they were. Lost causes. Practically dead already. But still, he stopped and once he steps out of the cabin, the woman immediately crowds in. She is saying something to him, pushing the child at her feet toward him. He had to give her credit. Towering nearly six feet tall in his dusty, pitch black bio suit, he must look like the Death or the Devil himself and in a way he was both. Still, she pushes her kid forward.

“Please, we have nowhere to go, no way to survive,” she pleads. “Have mercy.”

He looked down at the child. Even from above it was a horror. Angry, red patches of skin covered most of its head. Bald, blotchy and painful. It kept its head down, perhaps too weak to even lift its face to look him in the eye.

“Please,” whispered the woman, pushing the kid closer, even still. “Mercy, have mercy.”

She had no problem looking him in the face. And though she too is a horror to behold, the eyes are still good. Great, big, mournful eyes, dark brown. Strategic. He can respect that. And perhaps if he had been any other person, any other creature he would have taken pity and put them out of their misery.

He crouches down until he’s face to face with the woman. He doesn’t need to ask, doesn’t need to tap into any kind of supernatural force to see that this wretched, ugly creature would offer not just herself but her last living child up for slaughter. No hesitation. If only so they could finally find release.

He reaches out one, heavily-gloved hand and places it gently, almost affectionately on the kid’s ruined head. He then moves to curve his fingers around the mother’s jaw. She closes those doe eyes and breathes out a sigh. Of relief? Of pleasure? Or maybe she’s just tired. He doesn’t care.

He stands. The woman’s still got her eyes shut with that stupid look on her face like she's so grateful. With his other hand he pulls a knife from a pocket in his bio suit.

“Help us,” she pleads.

He throws the knife at her feet.

“Help yourself.”

Her screams vibrate through the air long after he’s climbed back into his carriage and carried on. The anguish echoing into the mist makes him feel more alive, more himself than he’s felt in a while.

Outpost 3 turns out to be a delightful little pocket of chaos that he’s happy to nestle his claws into. He’s pleasantly surprised when he sees her again, his Ms. Mead. She doesn’t recognize him and she’s stuck to Venable’s side but it isn’t a problem. She will know him again. Less pleasant, though equally entertaining, is the presence of the confusing little puzzle that is Mallory.

Michael is loathe to admit that she catches him off guard. Her interview starts off as predictable as possible. She’s an open book to him and he doesn’t need to read her file to figure her out. She’s from some small town in Colorado. Moved to the big city only to find out that she’s destined to be nothing more than a minuscule parasite doomed to suck on the teat of vapid idiots like Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt just to survive.

But the longer the interview goes on the more it becomes apparent. There’s something missing. Something is amiss with little Miss Mallory. As she tells him about how her parents split when she was young, her first boyfriend, how she began working for Ms. Vanderbilt, she begins to sound less like a person giving an interview and more like someone reciting rote memorization. He can’t put his finger on it but something just isn’t right. It’s not that she’s not pathetic and so disgustingly human . It’s not what she is but rather what she isn’t. It’s more like someone has hollowed her out. A pumpkin that’s been scrapped clean of all its insides.

“She needs me,” Mallory says with the slightest, bland smile and it’s honestly a little weird, unnerving even. The lights are on but nobody's home.

Still he keeps going. She’s visibly uncomfortable as he gives his speech about the fruit and the fire. He’s only half disingenuous. He’s being more than a little honest and he has no idea why. Her eyes look darker in this light and when he reaches out to touch her, she starts to cry.

And the next thing he knows the room is on fire.

Mallory stays low after that and he’s content to let her. There’s still a plethora of juicy morsels to taunt and toy with. He lets her go, lets her crawl on her belly back to the shadows. The next time he sees her she’s a corpse. The fun runs its eventual course. Venable got a hole in her chest the size of his fist. Mead is his once more and Michael feels severely rejuvenated. So maybe that’s why he pauses at the sight of the inhabitants of Outpost 3 splayed out on the floor like broken toys. Maybe he’s just feeling himself a little too much at this point and that’s why he finds her among the wreckage and crouches down besides her. He breathes into her.

He’s prepared to see what comes next, knows that death needs crawl out of her like a beetle and life will claw into her. It takes a few moments but soon enough she’s heaving but besides that she’s oddly silent when she stares up at him, jaw slack, death still coloring her lips. She looks like shit.

Michael had often wondered why it is that people have children. And the conclusion he has come to is that it’s ultimately an act of vanity. At some point in people’s lives they realize things are screwed up beyond repair and of course they are right. So they decide to start again. Wipe the slate clean. Start fresh. They have children. Little carbon copies they can turn to and say, "You will do what I could not. You will succeed where I have failed." Because they want someone to get it right this time. But not him. Not Michael.

Personally speaking, he was more than content to watch his new world eat these maggots alive. But there’s something about the girl’s eyes as she tears her way back into consciousness. Her eyes are liquid in the firelight, red-ringed and glittering. She finds his eyes and he feels something pull at him, a cord tied to something within him that had been slack this whole time now pulled taut. Then she screams and Michael wonders if this is what it’s like to see a child be born.

“Welcome back, Mallory.”

Hubie Happy Halloween, friends! I’m not sure what October’s been like for you, but here’s a quick summary of my month:

Re-acquainting myself with my collection of (mostly gray and navy blue) sweaters

Ordering an embarrassing—like, I lost count kind of embarassing—number of lattés

Alternating between enjoying the ombré of the fall trees and cozying up with the first logs in the fireplace

Revisiting all-time favorite stories like The Scarlet Pimpernel by the Baroness Orczy, the extended Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, all three seasons of Stranger Things, the 1995 Pride and Prejudice miniseries, and several Harry Potter movies

In short, this month has been all about finding joy in the little things, which is the essence of our search for coziness in autumn. Since these monthly Round Ups only focus on pop culture that’s new to me, that means this month’s list is shorter than usual, but many of the movies and shows feel like warm blankets I’ll return to again. Though, as you’ll see, a few are not…

A movie so charming, I’m on the verge of rewatching even though it’s only been a few weeks. (It’s a rare occurrence for me to return to something so quickly.) It lets a stacked cast of performers known for dramatic roles flex their comedic muscles, including Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, and—most spectacularly—Millie Bobby Brown. Murder, She Wrote (1984-96)

This entry comes with a bit of an asterisk* because Kyla and I watched this murder mystery procedural in 2018 for our podcast, SO IT’S A SHOW? At the time, I was open to watching more episodes, but it was never so easy as with the launch of the Peacock streaming service. All 12 seasons are available in the free tier, and I never thought a show about murder—and in the procedural format, which I don’t typically love—could be so enjoyable. Angela Lansbury’s mystery writer/amateur detective Jessica Fletcher has become a non-ironic role model for me—I aspire to be as gracious, intelligent, humble, uncynical, and assertive. Also, who says I’m not aspiring to spending my 60s writing, traveling, and solving crimes while wearing a fabulous collection of cardigans?

The Return of SNL

When Saturday Night Live returns in the fall, I always squeak out during the premiere’s opening credits, “My friends are back!” It’s a silly thing to say about an ever-rotating group of people I’ll never meet, but when you’ve been watching Kenan Thompson do his thing for close to two decades, you can only be delighted to see him after months of absence. While the “At Home” episodes this spring were a treat I didn’t think possible, it’s even better to have my friends back at it in their usual environment with the high production value of Studio 8H. These were the skits that made me laugh the most month:

Coach Carter (2005)

A based-on-a-true-story movie about an unconventional basketball coach (Samuel L. Jackson) who wants his players (including a baby Channing Tatum) to succeed on more than just the court. It’s a straight-down-the-middle story that shares DNA with many of the inspiring sports movies that came out in the wake of Remember the Titans, but it’ll scratch that itch if that’s what you’re looking for. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7.5/10

Double Feature — Early ’90s Halloween Classics: Edward Scissorhands (1990) + The Addams Family (1991)

Both of these movies start at Christmastime, but both are spooOOooky movies in their bones. Not all Halloween movies are Tim Burton movies, but all Tim Burton movies are Halloween movies, including Edward Scissorhands (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10). Tim Burton is hit-or-miss for me, but I was pleasantly surprised at how moving this idiosyncratic fairy tale was. Johnny Depp is at his most tortured as a Frankstein’s monster whose inventor (Vincent Price) gave him scissors for hands, Dianne Wiest finds the heart and comedy in your local Avon representative, and Winona Ryder is a queen. The Addams Family (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10) might be even more idiosyncratic. I’ve never watched the TV series, so it took me a minute to warm up to its twisted sense of humor (“Are they made from real Girl Scouts?”), but once I did, I started laughing as often as my nostalgic parents.

The Magic iPod

A nostalgia kick you didn’t know you wanted. I have no idea why or how this site exists, only that it brings me joy. Try mashing up “Ms. New Booty” with “A Thousand Miles,” “Get Low” with “Float On,” “Tipsy” with Bring Me to Life,” “99 Problems” with “All Star,” “Country Grammar” with “Complicated,” or any other combo that brings your favorite songs from your first iPod together.

Hubie Halloween (2020)

You know those dumb movies that just hit you in the right spot? Adam Sandler has a knack for those kind of movies, and Hubie Halloween fills the void of Halloween fun you’re probably missing this year. Sandler plays Hubie, a not-very-bright do-gooder with a very big heart whose self-proclaimed purpose is to keep everyone safe in his hometown of Salem. But there are spooOOooky threats on Halloween night this year, and only Hubie and his thermos (which rivals a Swiss army knife in all its functions) will be able to save it. Don’t miss it you’re like me and love a good celebrity cameo and a Hollywood-designed Halloween costumes. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 6/10

Double Feature — Are We Sure These ‘80s Movies Are for Kids? Gremlins (1984) + Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)

After seeing Gremlins (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10), I know why parents were clamoring for the PG-13 rating—this movie may be short on the scares for adults, but I have no idea what I’d do for a tyke not expecting the cuddly Gizmo to spawn homicidal ghouls. In what may be the most ‘80s movie I’ve watched yet, we get a legit bonkers story, both in premise and execution—and it might also be a brilliant and scathing satire of consumerism? Perhaps another spoof of consumerism: Who Framed Roger Rabbit (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10), which creates an impressively specific world that’s part animation, part live action. It’s a parody of classic film noir with no shortage of innuendo or just plain weirdness—its artistic achievement makes it worth watching, but since when have kids cared much about any of those things?

Double Feature — So-Bad-They’re-Good Action Flicks: Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000) + Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)

If Gremlins is one of the most ‘80s movies, then Gone in Sixty Seconds (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 5.5/10) is one of the most Nicolas Cage movies. He’s a good guy caught on the wrong side of the law in a ridiculous plot engine where he has to steal 50 cars in less than a week. His pent-up frustration lives just below the surface, and his performance is so committed, you’re not sure if he’s knows  the dialogue and plot twists are zany—in fact, you’re not even sure he’s acting at all. Also committed to whatever the heck it’s doing is a movie that’s exactly what it sounds like, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 6/10). An over-qualified cast (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anthony Mackie, Rufus Sewell, and more) just goes for it in a story with the premise that Abe Lincoln fought oppression caused by slavery and by immortal blood-suckers. I think my favorite part is when a vampire throws a pony at our 16th president—I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

October Critic Picks

Triple Feature — ‘60s Horror Classics: Village of the Damned (1960), The Haunting (1963), Night of the Living Dead (1968)

In Village of the Damned (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8/10), everyone in a British village passes out at the same time for hours, and weird events continue for years, centering around a mysterious group of children. In The Haunting (above, Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 9/10), a group is studying events at a haunted house, but it may be the house that’s in control. And in Night of the Living Dead (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10), the zombie genre dawns with a group huddled away from the undead in a farmhouse. All of these are thoughtful, well-made films, but I recommend them with asterisks* because I’ll never watch any of these groups again. The Haunting made me scared of bumps in the night as I was falling asleep, and Night of the Living Dead gave me zombie-filled nightmares. If you’re looking for a dose of heebie jeebies, these are the movies you’ll be needing!

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

I’m not sure I understood any of it, but I think I liked it? If you don’t mind a film that feels more like poetry than a plot, this visual stunner is worth the long runtime and straight-up weird sequence of scenes. Fortunately, I was prepped for my viewing with the help of Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz and writer/director Brad Bird, who selected as part of this season’s Essentials lineup. While Bird loves the film, Mankiewicz admitted it’s not one of his favorites because it’s such an obtuse head-scratcher. Both acknowledged it’s an important one to cinema, so unless The Tree of Life is still making your brain hurt almost a decade later, it’s worth trying to parse through a story that covers the dawn of man, man’s fight against machine, and, um, a lot of other things I couldn’t explain if I tried. Crowd: 5/10 // Critic: 10/10

The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)

If you’re a fan of Aaron Sorkin’s idealist monologues and ideological pitter-patter, then pause your latest binge of The West Wing to watch his latest writing/directing outing, now streaming on Netflix. Based on the true story of protesters who clashed with the police outside the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968—which, yes, doesn’t seem to difficult to imagine these days—it captures the spirit of a wild trial about political activism, healthy debate, fairness in government, and even the importance of grammar. If you watch it and think there’s no way this really happened, be sure to read up on the real trial to see how the film toned down the judicial circus. While this Oscars season will be unusual, we can predict this film will be in the awards conversation. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 9/10

Though Kyla and I always talk about Gilmore Girls on our podcast, we don’t just talk about the murder mystery TV shows it references like Murder, She Wrote. This month we talked about an ‘80s prime time soap full of shoulder pads and catfights as well as a ‘70s movie starring Rocky and the Fonz. Then we decided there were so many confusing pop culture references in an episode we couldn’t pick just one, so we researched a mish mash of topics like Punk Planet magazine, workout guru Jack LaLanne, singer Blossom Dearie, Manson cult member Leslie Van Houten, and a whole lotta board games.

Headcanon Time!

Mun Shuu: oKAY THIS MEANT TO BE A HEADCANON EXPLAINING WHY HIGUCHI WORKS SO HARD TO GAIN PEOPLE’S PRAISE, BUT IT TURNED INTO ONE BIG RAMBLY POST ABOUT HER BACKSTORY, SO YEAH, HAVE AT IT KIDS. I HOPE YOU ENJOY MY INCOHERENT THOUGHTS ON THIS.

Mun Shuu: Okay, so we got Higuchi here, right? I headcanoned her earlier to have come from a well-to-do, socially acceptable household, so I’m about to go into that a little more. Mun Shuu: The household she came from was strict and held conservative values, very traditional in the sense that the man was the head of the house and the wife was reduced to a minor role (thus, explaining why Higuchi herself adheres to rules and tradition and is always worried about what is proper versus what isn’t when it comes to handling her superiors). With Higuchi being the eldest, her parents probably put a lot of pressure on her to succeed and be essentially the perfect child--her father being the most adamant about it. They had already foreseen the occupation she was going into (doctor, lawyer--you know, traditionally successful jobs), but Higuchi was, for the most part, not really cut out for all that. Mun Shuu: She was of average intelligence, had very little artistic skill, and seemed content to simply just get the job done. She was not by any means a competitive student and, although she was friendly and sociable, Higuchi had a difficult time making any lasting connections, ergo a lack of adequate friendships. People thought she was diligent and kind, but lacking. Nothing about her stuck out, and she seemed just fine with that. The only thing she could actively say was wrong was that she often felt alienated in class and at home. Kids in her school were kind enough, but considered her to be a little strange--she daydreamed a lot about insipid things and had interests that no one ever really shared. Not only did Higuchi not fit the scholarly standards of her family, but she was also somewhat of an unaware social outcast. She never bothered to try to fit in with her peers and was alright with hanging on her own (although she did often feel left out when she heard about sleepovers or dates or games). Higuchi became increasingly close with her sister, who seemed to gain all the talents Higuchi herself was lacking in. Mun Shuu: Higuchi was highly imaginative as a child and did like to read a number of fictional texts; however, this did very little to impress her father. Nothing seemed to impress him. Her mother was no better. She always seemed to be looking for approval, a praise or at least a good effort from someone. Her sister received a number of recognitions from peers and family alike, but Higuchi had been reduced to being nothing more but a disappointment. She won nothing, had average grades, and wasn’t even all that practical a person, resulting in her becoming touch-starved and slightly ostracized. The only thing she had once gotten praise for was her skill at the shooting range, when she first started using firearms. However, even this lost its magic, and she found herself being berated at another end of one of her father’s lectures (what are you going to do with yourself? You can’t expect us to baby you forever, you know?, etc., etc.) Mun Shuu: As high school started, Higuchi then began to cave into her parent’s demands and dedicated her life to working hard and studying; she spoke very little about her dreams and imaginative ideas, and even avoided anything that could cause her distraction (namely, anything that was done for the sake of it being fun--her books, any doodles she’s made, written fiction, etc., etc.,). While most teenagers were having fun with friends, Higuchi was locked inside her bedroom studying almost non-stop day and day out--her grades improved, but even when put at their best, they did not spurn any praise. So, she worked even harder, up until senior year. Mun Shuu: Now, this is where things start to get a little flaky. I have yet to decide what Higuchi’s sister has done, but it was essentially enough to ruin the family’s honor and cause them a great deal of disdain. Being the Ichiyou’s golden child, this was extremely unforgivable and she found herself being lashed out upon rather cruelly. Higuchi, already under strain, had to take a break from studying in order to meditate the crisis between sister and father (sympathizing primarily with the former). The situation escalated so much that Higuchi eventually had to drop out entirely to ensure that the home environment ran smoothly. Unfortunately, this endeavor only caused her parents to lash out at Higuchi in particular--after all, she was only bringing more shame to the family by dropping out before even completing high school? She didn’t care, and continued to do what she thought was best for everyone. In the end, an argument had broken out between her and her father that resulted in Higuchi and her sister being kicked out entirely. Mun Shuu: It wasn’t until the mafia found her a few years later that she could eventually make ends meet--it was a miracle that she even survived for so long out on the streets with her sister in tow. Higuchi is grateful towards PM for giving her this opportunity to thrive, even if the occupation is ill-suited for her. She felt she only owed them the best that she could possibly offer, so when prompted to become Akutagawa’s subordinate and eventual bodyguard, Higuchi took this task with the utmost sincerity. Gradually, over time, she noticed how Akutagawa kept himself separated from the others. Seeing as how she was often left out of things as a child, it would only be natural for her to feel sympathetic--she knew that the feeling of being left out is not a good feeling at all and sort of assumed that he needed a friend. No matter how hard she tried though, he wouldn’t seem to accept her friendship, so all she could do was become the best subordinate she could possibly be, and he won’t even recognize that. Mun Shuu: Higuchi wants her existence to be validated, that it is in fact useful to other people and that she is, in fact, making a difference in their lives whether by skill alone or by kindness. She strives for being respected or being admired, simply because everyone always expects her to fail--after all, there is nothing special about Higuchi. No ability, no record, no rewards--she’s quite vanilla by Mafia standards, and is even outright ignored or shunned. And yet, she persists because she wants to prove them wrong; she wants them to be pleasantly surprised and be overwhelmed with pride, something that she never once received in her life. All Higuchi does is she wants to make Akutagawa, someone proud of her and how far she’s come, despite the obstacles in her path. Just one word of praise, just something, and her struggle would be worth it. Mun Shuu: Yo, if you’ve honestly read this to the end, thank you.
