Jane Tennant is feeling just a little bit “dented” when CBS‘ NCIS: Hawai’i kicks off Season 3 on Monday, Feb. 12 — though the typically rock-solid Special Agent in Charge would be the last one to admit it.
Tennant, after all, went through it at the close of Season 2, deceived as she was by both a former (and “dead”) asset and her slippery-as-a-snake mentor, Maggie Shaw. Along the way, she saw very special ally Charlie 1 take a bullet to the center of his bean.
So when Season 3 arrives, series lead Vanessa Lachey shares in the TVLine video Q&A above, “I’m trying to back in the groove, and I need this guy” — visiting NCIS Special Agent Sam Hanna, played by LL COOL J aka James Todd Smith — “to help me out, to give me some inspiration, some motivation.”
Detailing his alter ego’s capacity to help Tennant get back out in the field after some time off, LL COOL J says, “Sam’s been through so much” during 13 seasons of NCIS: Los Angeles. “He’s seen a lot, h’es done a lot, he’s used to dealing with the PTSD of it all… He is a sounding board that she can trust.”
Lachey and LL COOL L go on to preview how Special Agent Jesse Boone (played by Noah Mills) has been faring as “boss junior” during Tennant’s downtime, Sam’s involvement in high-octane action scenes (in addition to being an “angel” on Jane’s shoulder), and whether we’ll get updates on any of the other Los Angeles NCIS agents.
The duo close things out by fielding a TVLine reader Q about Jane’s (oddly troubled?) love life, offering #Kacy fans a provocative one-word teaser, and then hyping the surprises the tightly packed, 10-episode season has in store.

its about a third or so through the year now so i thought i’d do a little reading check in! the covers above are all the books i’ve so far this year (for fun! i’ve read 8 or so books for school this semester, mostly poetry collections and some young adult novels for an education course, but i dont really care enough about them to talk about lol!)
here’s a little run down, not really in any order:
her body and other parties by carmen maria machado — read probably two thirds of this last fall, but took a break from reading when the semester got too crazy. finishing this was so great!!! i think machado’s writing is phenomenal and her stories are so moving. it makes me want to read more short story collections, because i dont really seek them out!
persuasion by jane austen — reread! i listened to the cynthia erivo audiobook from spotify over the weekend before valentines day and it was very lovely 🥰
my name will grow wide like a tree by yi lei — i’m so glad yi lei’s work has been translated so that i got an opportunity to experience her brilliant poetry. i read and reread the lines like 🤯🤯🤯! tracy k. smith has also done something really cool with the translation here. she talks in depth about her process in the introduction, which was excerpted in lithub if youre curious!
deerskin by robin mckinley — one of my new favorite books! strange, propulsive, essential!!
phantom of the opera by gaston leroux — this was fine lol the musical is definitely more fun
pachinko by min jin lee — didnt have this on my list of books to read this spring but i got so excited by trailer for the tv show adaptation and the opening title sequence (!!!!!) that i just had to :) it was amazing! if you’re intimidated by the length, honestly dont be! i flew through it
trouble the saints by alaya dawn johnson — another one i picked up again after dropping it last fall. this was so lush and atmospheric, but i found it hard to follow all the threads of this one, partly because of the way it’s plotted, partly because the fantasy elements are so nebulous
the moonstone by wilkie collins — randomly a new favorite! i love detective novels, so it shouldnt be a surprise, but i guess i wasnt expecting The Literal First One to be so compelling and fun! it felt like sinking into a hot bath every time i opened the book
the low low woods by carmen maria machado — i must be a machado completist!!! this rocked! as a PA native, i was especially tickled by the fact that she’s writing what she calls “pennsylvania horror” here :) centralia is such juicy inspo for a creepy graphic novel like this one.
2022 has been a good year for books so far! it doesn't really feel like it, because i haven’t been reading super regularly. but looking back, i found some new favorites and havent really disliked anything!

IT Girls in Austen’s Emma
Urban dictionary: “The "It Girl" is the girl that EVERYONE wants to be. She has everything that you want so you tend to envy her. She does all the things that you can't do so you grow to hate her. Being an "It Girl" is having the latest sh**s, (the best clothing and always stays fly) and the prettiest face. Her attitude can be f**ked up or perfect like her looks. Her presence is always appreciated, ALL the guys Want her and ALL the girls want to be her!”
The “IT” Girls: Emma, Harriet, and Jane in 2022
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=it%20girl
Fashion nowadays is somewhat strange. We stan clothing from the eras before us. Take the current wave of “Y2K Fashion,” where we take the fashion of the early 2000s (that we once made fun of) and style it to be fun & fresh. Believe it or not, the outfits of these women on the left have begun to inspire us.
This all leads to adventures like “thrifting-” where most clothing that catches the eye feels a little older. If it was new, there’d be less of an appeal (or at least I say so).
When reading Emma for a second time, I could not help but to think about the film Clueless. With this film in mind, I thought a lot about the fashion it shows and how each character is portrayed through their clothing styles. This led me to wonder… What would Austen’s characters wear in 2022? Keep in mind, I am no fashion expert and these are all purely opinionated.
Emma Woodhouse: https://www.pinterest.com/zurcur/the-emma-woodhouse/
When thinking about Emma, it shocked me just how many modern day heroines that a lot of us grew up with are just like her. It makes me wonder if they were all somehow made in the image of Emma Woodhouse. Emma, as a character, is headstrong, independent, and fearless- just like the women I grew up watching on television, that is why I have made her 2022 outfit inspo in their image. A few examples include Blair Waldorf and Serena Vanderwoodsen of Gossip Girl, Carrie Bradshaw of The Carrie Diaries and Sex in the City, the entire squad of Mean Girls, and of course Cher of Clueless. I designed Emma’s modern day style in the image of these influential (and iconic female characters of my upbringing. For reference, top left is Blair and Serena, top right is Carrie Bradshaw, bottom right are the women from Clueless and Mean Girls. 💋💋💋
So, back to Emma. I tried my best to read her vibes through the lenses of 2022 when reading about her. I believe that today, Emma would fall under the “preppy” modern fashion category. This “preppy” style falls in between the totally classy plaid of Cher, Blair, and Serena and the sexier and in your face fashion of the Mean Girls and Carrie Bradshaw. In fact, I may even call it the perfect blend.
Please DO NOT confuse Emma's preppy style with the other version of preppy fashion. Emma Woodhouse would not put this on:
Now, I don’t shame the stylistic choices of my fellow ladies… in fact I own a few fits like these,  but Emma does. And these are crimes in her eyes. She would make you her next project.
Harriet Smith: https://www.pinterest.com/zurcur/harriet-smith/
Harriet can be a bit complicated. She’s not a little shirt little skirt type like Emma, but she’s more of a big pant big shirt girl.
Maybe even a little shirt big pant on occasion. Harriet is a fun & loving character. However, as displayed in how easily the popular Emma was able to change Harriet’s viewpoints on things (like loving Robert Martin), Harriet follows the trends of those around her. This being said, she falls under the Y2K Streetwear category. This style consists of graphic tees, any jean but a skinny jean (God forbid), chunky & colorful & beaded jewelry, maybe a nice hair clip or antique hat and closed toe shoes at all costs. Harriet isn’t your typical Y2K girl because she wouldn’t wear a pink crop top, a fluffy jacket, a mini-skirt, or anything of that sort. To clear things up further, Harriet would be more of a Rihanna Y2K rather than a Britney Y2K.
Harriet’s modern Y2k Streetwear style is reminiscent of Tai’s style in Clueless. The vibes remain the same. Without Emma’s slightly misguided guidance, Harriet is what you may call a cool girl. She minds her business and takes dope pics- a very uncontroversial girl.
Jane Fairfax: https://www.pinterest.com/zurcur/jane-fairfax
Lastly, we have Miss Jane Farifax, lover of Frank, an accomplished and classy queen. She radiates a simple yet pretty sort of vibe. Jane is calm, reserved, and peaceful- her 2022 style reflects such traits. She’d wear earthy toned clothing and stray from a regular jean. She is not quite grungecore- I would place her in the “cottagecore” fashion style. Cottagecore is the modern rendition of what my parents call “boho” or “hippie.” It is a bit more girly and is centered around the earthy tones pictured and flowery patterns. Jane probably has my favorite fashion style. The absolute opposite of Emma but in the best way possible.
IT Girl Glossary
Preppy: Inspired by the wealthy classes before us, just not as official. The modern preppy style has been credited to fictional characters like Blair Waldorf… a true legend and the epitome of peppy. Her style has been reimagined to the plaid prep style Gen Z takes on today.
“The appeal of preppy fashion is that it looks clean, intentionally styled and- above all- is not swayed by fleeting trend cycles. Preppy fashion is its own genre of classic, so by wearing it, you are, too. One of the best parts about classic pieces is seeing how every generation chooses to style them.” (www.stylecaster.com)
Y2K x Streetwear: “Every few years, our fashion trends get a ‘blast from the past’ where some of our favorite items from decades ago make a resurgence in stores, streetwear, and popular fashion. The current Y2K fashion trend is just that- a reappearance of clothing and aesthetic trends from the late 90s and the year 2000.” (www.collegefashion.net)
This definitely is a style that I wish I could rock, but can’t because I’m not that cool. Anyways, a lot of the time the clothing we see in Y2K Streetwear styled to be more feminine comes from the “men’s” section of clothing stores. Looks better restyled anyways! The style includes a lot of oversized clothing and pieces that may seem more masculine- thereby the clothing type isn’t made for the feminine style very often, and if it is it’s probably cropped or way too tight or cut with a deep v-neck because for some reason that’s the only thing people think we want.
Cottagecore: Honestly, people have just begun putting words in front of “core” to describe new fashion styles: grungecore, cottagecore, fairycore… the list goes on. Cottage core feels the most similar to and symbolic of Austen’s time. The regency era fashion of those who weren’t quite of the higher class but weren’t dirt poor- much like Jane. This fashion has just been changed to be more fashionable in our eyes- but you can definitely see the influence.
“Cottagecore is a fashion aesthetic popularized by teenagers and young adults celebrating an idealized rural life. It was developed throughout the 2010s and was first named cottagecore on Tumblr in 2018.” (www.wikipedia.com)
Thrifting: A wild goose chase that young adults like to go on for clothes that feel vintage and fun. Can either go really well or absolutely terrible.
Little shirt/skirt vs Big shirt/pant: I don’t know how to describe this. If you know you know

rules: answer 30 questions about yourself then tag 20 people you want to get to know better. i don’t have 20 friends
nickname: Sam
gender: Female (she/her)
star sign: Gemini. i am cursed.
height: 5′ 3-3/4″
time: 5:10 PM (EST)
birthday: May 29, 1993
favourite bands: This is such a hard question! I listen to music all day long, especially when I’m commuting, so It changes day to day. But, I think the ones that stick with me through the years are mainly for nostalgia. My high school / punk rock days (Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the DIsco, and All Time Low). I still listen to Songs About Jane a lot but as a whole, Maroon 5 has really changed their sound and I’m not as big of a fan anymore. But you can NEVER go wrong with the Beatles. Holy grail. Always puts me in a good mood.
favourite solo artists: I also usually listen to music when I write, so it really depends on what characters I’m playing and what their mood music might be. - When I was playing Sean, I listened to a lot of Sad Boyz (Jeff Buckley, John Legend, Sam Smith), stuff he would listen to while high (Gorillaz, Drake) and artists who sang about dark themes (ex. Lana del Rey, The Weeknd, also because i fucking love him and his dark lyrics fuck me up Abel.)  - For Sarah, it was a lot of Bea Miller and Alessia Cara--female artists who sing about rebellion and not giving a fuck. - Scott is a lot of male pop singers (Justin Timberlake, One Republic) and some white boy rap (feat. the best/funniest thing you will ever hear, aka what my friend’s friends recorded at school, ESPECIALLY “Get That Girl A Soda” and “Livin’ Like Larry”). - Jonah was more classic rock (The Rolling Stones), Adele (songs that will make my cry about his ship with Eve) and songs that vaguely alluded to religion without making me feel uncomfortable ("Devil’s Backbone,” “Take Me To Church,” etc.) - But for me? My holy trinity is probably Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé
song stuck in my head: the entire Newsies musical because we opened last week and it’s still so good
last movie watched: Scary Movie 2
last show watched: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
when did i create my blog: About a year ago. And yet, I still manage to only have about 30 pages hahah hmm...
what do i post: I try to keep it pretty clean so it’s mostly just 1x1′s. All of my inspo / edits / personal stuff goes on my muse blog.
last thing i googled: Usually it’s word definitions, art references, or for gif huns I’ve clicked on 10,000 times. Most recently it was “What year does It Follows take place” because we had a triple feature last night and we were all wondering. Pretty movie, aesthetically pleasing, not very scary (as it was pitched to us as “a scary movie.”) The group elected the turn it off halfway through, so I read the rest of the plot on Wikipedia lmao. I’ll watch it all the way through one day.
do you have any other blogs?: Muse blog! And various old rpg blogs that I should delete but I don’t.
do you get asks: No but I also don’t make calls for them. I don’t know what I would be asked in the first place. But I mean, if you have any questions, feel free haha.
why did you choose your url: Instead of don’t cry for me it’s donut cry for me. Get it? Get it? Ha.... Also because we were doing Evita at the time, and the title of the most-known song is Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.
following: 38, even though I only really see the same 5 people on my dash
followers: 39. Even though I only write with the same 5 3 people lmao
favourite colors: How dare you ask me that. I tend to wear lots of blues, gravitate towards cool-toned purples and teal, and have been told my “aura” is pink, so honestly who knows. But i love painting with earth tones <3
average hours of sleep: I always aim for 7-8 but it never happens. Uusally about 6, not bad.
lucky number: Once when I was 12, I won two stuffed animals from one of those claw machines at a Friendly’s on a Friday the 13th, so I like to go with 13 just to stick it to the man.
instrument: My vocal chords :^) (I can play Ode to Joy on the piano but i don’t think that counts lmao)
what am i wearing?: a t-shirt and sweatpants because the sky decided to open up as I was coming home and I was cold and wet
how many blankets do i sleep with?: In summer, one plus my sheets. In the winter, I tack an extra one on.
dream job: A scenic artist for film, TV, and theatre 8) I’m already doing it, but it’s my dream to be making more money while doing it lmao
dream trip: I’d love to do what my aunt and uncle did for their 25th anniversary and go to Sorrento (Italy), and then take day trips to the surrounding islands like Capri. But literally, I’ll go anywhere. I want to travel so bad
favourite food: Give me any kind of seafood, especially shellfish. But I also eat just about anything. Italian food, but no one can cook it like my mom. I’m also a huge fan of hibachi and sushi..
nationality: American, but I’m 3/4 Italian, and then 1/4 Polish and Russian by heritage.
favourite song now: don’t do this to me. My gut tells me to say Feel Good Inc but I have about one thousand favorite songs so it’s not even fair
Tagging @justalostindie @deconstrux @wastedsxns and anyone else who wants to do it!
