i don't think i've said it enough: shoutouts to the mirror match trope. especially games that take it to the level where they can do everything you can. they have all the abilities you've worked so hard for. they have all your items at their disposal. they know everything you know, they know how you tick, but you know the same back. can you find a way to outsmart yourself?

#💡// notably separate from the “fighting an alternate version of yourself” trope which isn't quite the same #i don't really think i've even seen an actual mirror match done with that yet?#like with badeline in celeste. that's confronting an alternate version of yourself. that's a part of you.#but it's not a mirror match. during your actual fight with her she can't dash like you can. it's not an even playing field #and even during the chase scene. it's a chase. you have the headstart. and badeline can't do anything to outsmart you #actually scratch what i said i think i remembered one that fits both tropes. the SA-X from metroid fusion #for those who haven't played: it's a mirror match where this form-stealing parasite gets all the abilities samus had in super.#it represents everything she lost to the x parasites. it's taken her old suit- how she looked. her agency. who she used to be.#it's everything she was. versus everything she is. and stars that's like the peak example of a mirror match to me
