guns

guns   make   leila   uncomfortable   to   the   extreme.   she   wants   them   nowhere   near   her. 

her   fear   of   them   began   because   of   her   husband   ,   matthew.   matthew   was   an   experienced   hunter   and   an   avid   collector.   he   cared   for   them   very   carefully.   every   night  ,   he   polished   at   least   one.   he   would   drive   into   the   olympic   national   forest   every   other   weekend   to   go   hunting.   at   first  ,   leila   didn't   mind.   she   liked   the   fact   that   he   had   a   hobby  ,   and   that   they   had   fresh   meat   more   often   than   not.  (   venison   is   delicious.  )   in   the   beginning   of   their   marriage  ,   she   respected   guns  ,   but   she   didn't   fear   them.

she   fears   them   now.

matthew's   abuse   went   beyond   physical   ,   though   in   domestic   abuse   situations   it's   nearly   impossible   for   things   not   to.   whenever   leila   did   something   to   particularly   upset   him  ,   matthew   would   grab   one   of   his   guns.   he   kept   all   kinds  ,   not   just   hunting   rifles.   he   had   revolvers  ,   he   had   pistols  ,   he   had   a   shotgun.   he   would   methodically   take   it   apart   and   shine   them  ,   all   the   while   telling   leila   what   guns   could   do.

he   would   describe   to   her   what   guns   could   do   to   a   human   body  ;   he   would   tell   her   how   no   one   would   find   her   body   if   he   got   mad   enough.   that   he   could   dump   it   in   the   national   forest   and   the   mountain   lions   would   get   rid   of   the   evidence   before   anyone   noticed. 

“   it.   ”

he   always   said   “   it.   ”

she   knew   he   was   right.   she   didn't   have   any   friends   in   forks.   she   didn't   have   any   friends   anywhere  ,   not   anymore. 

he   had   everything   planned   out.   he   would   say   she   left   him   and   no   one   would   question   him  ,   because   no   one   knew   her   well   enough   to   say   otherwise.   it'd   be   the   talk   of   the   town.   small   places   like   that   never   had   enough   to   gossip   about. 

she   had   taken   one   of   his   small   pistols   with   her   when   she   left.   she   barely   knew   how   to   use   it.   her   aim   was   terrible. 

after   the   accident  ,   after   geoff  ,   she'd   sit   with   the   gun   and   stare   at   it   and  think.   she   could   never   decide   what   she   wanted   to   do   with   it.   whether   she   wanted   to   kill   matthew  ,   or   anastasia  ,   or   herself.   a   few   times  ,   she'd   empty   the   thing   and   hold   it   to   herself.   how   badly   could   it   hurt   if   i   shot   herself   here   ,   she'd   think   with   it   pressed   against   her   temple.   how   quickly   would   i   be   gone   ?   she   wrapped   her   lips   around   the   barrel   and   squeezed   the   trigger   and   fantasized   about   what   it   would   be   like   to   be   free.

to   be   dead.

although   she's   not   as   eager   to   die   anymore   ,   she   still   doesn't   trust   herself   around   guns.   they   bring   back   a   host   of   bad   memories.   she   and   her   therapist   have   decided   it's   best   if   they're   not   around   her.

timeline

this   is   a rough   timeline   of   when   things   happened.   i   will   give   more   detail   or   add   more   as   it   comes   to   me.

age   18    —    leila   moves   to   seattle   from   new   jersey.   she   got   into   an   art   school   she   loved   and   she   is   working   hard   to   make   it   work   ,   despite   the   new   state   and   coastline   and   independence.   she   works   at   a   dennys   and   lives   in   student   housing. 

age   19    —   matthew   starts   showing   up   at   leila's   job.   he   immediately   starts   flirting.   leila   thinks   its   harmless   and   that   he's   kind   of   cute.

age   21    —    leila   is   chosen   by   the   school   to   donate   her   artwork   to   a   charity   auction.   christian   is   there.   they   meet   ,   hit   it   off   ,   and   she   soon   becomes   his   submissive.

age   23    —    leila   realizes   she's   in   love   with   christian.   it   takes   her   a   lot   ,   but   she   eventually   works   up   the   courage   to   tell   him.   christian   lets   her   know   that   there's   no   hope   for   more   with   him.   leila   leaves   him   as   his   submissive   and   finally   gives   matthew   a   shot.   they   date   for   less   than   six   months   before   he   convinces   her   to   drop   out   of   school   to   marry   him  ,   and   they   move   to   forks  , where   he   continues   his   career   as   a   policeman. 

age   24    —    matthew   hits   her   for   the   first   time.   at   this   point  ,   he's   successfully   isolated   her   from   everyone   she   knows.   she   hasn't   talked   to   her   family   in   at   least   a   year.   she's   made   no   friends   in   forks   because   he   rarely   lets   her   out.   he   has   been   mentally   and   emotionally   abusing   her   for   a   while.   it   started   out   slow  ,   to   the   point   leila   didn't   notice   initially.   by   now  ,   though  ,   leila   doesn't   think   she   can   leave   him. 

age   25    —    leila   meets   geoff   by   chance   at   the   grocery   store.   he   recognizes   the   signs   of   abuse   and   tries   to   convince   her   to   leave. 

age   26    —    leila   runs   away   with   geoff.   she   manages   to   steal   $2,000   from   her   husband.   they   leave   in   geoff's   car.   he   is   killed   beside   her   in   a   car   accident.   they   had   just   made   it   to   seattle   from   forks.   it   was   only   a   three   hour   drive   and   leila   spent   most   of   it   trembling   in   fear   that   matthew   would   know   and   find   them.   when   geoff   dies  ,   leila   has   a   mental   breakdown   that   results   in   her   stalking   anastasia.   the   last   time   she   was   really  ,   truly   happy   was   with   christian  ;   she   wants   to   know   what   ana   has   that   she   doesn't.   she   is   not   in   her   right   mind  ,   but   her   intentions   are   self-harm  ,   not   murder. 

age   27     —    leila   is   under   the   legal   care   of   christian   grey.   he   is   her   legal   guardian  ;   it   was   to   his   custody   that   she   was   released   from   the   mental   hospital.   she   lives   in   her   own   studio   apartment  ,   which   is   paid   for   by   him.   she's   gone   back   to   school  ,   which   is   also   paid   for   by   him.   she   often   tries   to   pay   him   back  ,   to   no   avail.
