Chouji’s cheeks glow pink with happiness in response to Menma’s gratitude. It felt like. . Like maybe Menma was starting to consider them friends! Which was all the Akimichi wanted.  Chouji scratches his cheek thoughtfully, trying to keep a giant grin from growing on his lips. “Yeah, no worries— I-I know how adults can be. Sometimes I get bad looks ‘cuz of my size.” That wasn’t a lie. “Kids can be jerks, too.  I’m glad you aren’t one!”  That smile he was trying to hide earlier was totally there now!

“B-But, ermm, anyway— The menu! Y’asked what’s good? Ermm. .”

Everything? Chouji thought everything was good!  He usually went with the Signature Cut Special, which came with four of their best meats to grill (various cuts of beef and pork with shrimp ) and bowls of miso soup and fried rice cakes! Chouji was practically salivating at the thought.  He reaches across the table and points a large finger towards the ‘specia.l’

“Let’s get the special! It comes with a whole bunch o’meats and some appetizers! That way you get to try a bit of everything. Whaddya think?”

on one hand, menma felt better knowing chouji knew how he felt with the people; but on the other hand, there was a flame of anger in his chest hearing people would even discriminate him over something so inconsequential like his weight. chouji was so nice?!

like, really nice.

no one’s ever taken him out for a meal before, so chouji was insanely nice.

menma gave a thoughtful look at the prompting, humming for a moment, then nodded.

“that sounds good,” he agreed. honestly, it sounded like a lot—especially for someone who was forced to stay on a ramen & other cheap, quick meals diet, menma tried not to feel overwhelmed. he reminded himself that he wouldn’t be eating alone, however.

“ahh... honestly i’ve not tried too many foods, so i’m sure there’s a lot of meats that i’ll be trying for the first time today, y’know that?” his smile grew a bit shy, yet forcefully bright—an obvious attempt at trying to keep... strong? from feeling awkward? from feeling overwhelmed?

what he really felt was just confusion at the whole situation, but if menma was good at anything it was adapting & damn was he trying to adapt & seem like a normal human being.
