i  think  the  fact  that  ren  tends  to  keep  a  relatively  indifferent-seeming  outer  shell  acts  as  a  smokescreen  that  conceals  just  how  WEIRD  he  really  is.  like  make  no  mistake,  this  man  earned  that  wandering  eccentric  title.  his  manner  of  speech  tends  to  veer  very  soft  and  deadpan  —  but  the  WORDS  he's  actually  saying  are  blunt  at  best  and  tasteless  at  worst.  his  preferred  way  of  entering  a  building  is  through  the  nearest  window.  when  he's  described  as  pragmatic,  he  really  is  pragmatic  to  the  extreme  —  he  will  do  violent  or  strange  or  just  plain  morally  questionable  things,  but  he  does  them  with  the  unhesitating  diligence  of  one  who  believes  it's  entirely  justified.  not  even  in  the  sense  that  he's  knowingly  committing  a  necessary  evil,  either.  he's  very  good  at  replicating  human  behavior  and  mentally  he's  close  to  human  —  but  then  there  are  these  moments  when  he  does  or  says  something  completely  alien.  he  doesn't  have  the  flippant  personality  of  an  immortal  who  experiences  decades  in  the  blink  of  an  eye,  but  he  is  an  incredibly  impressionable  being  effectively  left  to  marinate  in  the  worst  horrors  the  world  has  to  offer  for  LIFETIMES  on  end.  if  you're  very  close  with  him,  he'll  obliviously  drop  little  crumbs  of  trauma  like  he's  talking  about  what  he  did  over  the  weekend.

also  his  personality  is  just  plain  strange?  he  has  knowledge  of  the  fake  sky,  of  the  world's  hidden  (  disturbing  )  secrets  but  that  isn't  important  right  now  because  he  has  an  essay  to  write.  he's  effectively  a  demigod  but  his  weakness  is  bugs.  he  picks  up  weird  hobbies  out  of  boredom  and  drops  them  just  as  quickly.  he  speaks  in  double  meanings  and  lies  by  omission  —  but  he  rarely  lies  OUTRIGHT.  he  will  walk  away  mid-conversation  if  it's  no  longer  interesting.  (  or  if  you  happen  to  take  your  eyes  off  of  him  for  more  than  a  minute.  )  he's  horribly  awkward.  he  would  unironically  set  the  world  on  fire  to  keep  kazuha  warm.  he  has  sopping  wet  cat  energies  that  makes  every  elderly  person  in  a  fifty  mile  radius  immediately  start  treating  him  like  their  grandson.  he  used  to  chomp  seashells  and  rocks  before  he  learned  they  were  allegedly  inedible.

he's  good  at  hiding  it,  but  don't  be  fooled  by  the  aloof  exterior.  ren  is  a  huge  weirdo.

old  modernverse  was  ren  becoming  a  streamer  as  an  allegory  for  followers  of  a  social  media  personality  being  akin  to  followers  of  a  god  —  with  a  deconstruction  of  both  parasocial  relationships  and  relying  on  the  attention  of  anonymous  strangers  to  fulfill  one's  need  for  validation.  (  even  at  the  cost  of  personal  comfort,  privacy  and  reducing  oneself  to  a  product.  )

new  modernverse  is  just  ❝  mom  didn't  love  me  so  i  invested  in  bitcoin  ❞  with  a  side  of  that  awkward  moment  when  the  criminals  you  agree  to  work  for  turn  out  to  actually  be  criminals  doing  criminal  things  and  faking  your  own  death  is  easier  than  handing  in  a  resignation  notice.

ren  and  scara  are  both  fussy  little  neat  freaks,  and  i  think  to  a  degree  it's  just  one  of  those  qualities  baked  into  the  most  basic  iteration  of  his  personality.  his  base  code.  (  the  kabukimono  also  has  these  tendencies  —  but  he's  considerably  nicer  about  it.  )  he  cannot  stand  clutter  and  messiness.  in  clothing,  in  living  spaces.  his  subordinates  would  be  punished  SEVERELY  for  tracking  snow  and  dirt  into  his  office.  if  your  shirt  is  unbuttoned,  if  your  hair  is  unbrushed,  if  your  face  is  dirty,  he's  going  to  nag  you  about  it  like  a  disappointed  mother.  ren  in  particular  is  incredibly  protective  over  his  clothing  and  will  go  to  extra  lengths  to  keep  them  clean  and  pristine  because  it's  much  more  inconvenient  for  him  to  REPLACE  them  —  but  even  scaramouche  will  get  irritated  if  you  have  the  audacity  to  bleed  on  him.

it  just  irks  him  severely,  and  he's  long  since  given  up  trying  to  make  sense  of  it.  if  anything,  he  thinks  he's  in  the  right.

i  think  it's  a  funny  reoccurring  joke  that  ren  is  very  quick  to  correct  people  when  they  call  kazuha  anything  other  than  his  fiancé  —  especially  because  he's  stated  multiple  times  marriage  doesn't  really  hold  the  same  significance  to  him  that  it  does  for  an  ordinary  person.  he  genuinely  does  want  to  marry  kazuha,  but  big  celebrations  really  aren't  to  his  liking  —  and  neither  is  being  pushed  into  the  spotlight.  he's  still  more  than  willing  to  put  up  with  it  because  he  loves  kazuha  and  he  wants  to  officially  share  his  last  name.  (  which  unsurprisingly  holds  a  considerable  amount  of  symbolism  for  him.  )  however,  ren  specifically  goes  out  of  his  way  to  remind  people  that  kazuha  is  his  fiancé  (  not  his  husband  or  boyfriend  or  anything  else  for  that  matter  )  because  he  KNOWS  that  it's  noteworthy to  him, specifically.  even  if  he  isn't  present  for  the  conversation  at  hand,  even  if  ren  doesn't  have  any  personal  connection  to  marriage  as  a  concept. this thing is important to kazuha and so he'll do everything he can to ensure it's handled properly.

it's  a  small  thing  only  i  will  probably  spend  an  inordinate  amount  of  time  brainrotting  over,  but  i  purposefully  changed  the  color  used  in  ren's  formatting  not  only  to  match  with  his  new  graphics  but  also  as  a  sign  of  character  growth.  because  i  AM  a  huge  sucker  for  development  and  he  IS  gradually  healing  —  and  i  love  the  idea  of  his  colors  shifting  accordingly  from  those  dusty, desaturated hues  to  royal  blue  and  gold.

i  have  headcanons  from  my  old  blog  queued  to  post  up  until  mid-december,  but  i'm  pretty  sure  i  never  got  around  to  writing  one  about  ren's  bodysuit?  (  because  i  spend  way  too  much  time  brainrotting  over  miniscule  details.  )

it's  made  of  a  sheer  /  semi-transparent  material,  hence  why  the  markings  tracing  his  body  are  visible  through  it.  they're  best  compared  to  ley  lines  —  in  the  sense  that  they're  a  network  of  elemental  energy  flowing  through  his  body,  hence  why  they  glow  when  ren  calls  upon  his  anemo.  (  think  of  them  almost  like  the  wires  inside  of  a  machine.  )  they  only  became  visible  after  dottore  unsealed  his  power;  scaramouche's  attire  was  entirely  opaque  and  kept  them  concealed.  even  so,  they  still  glowed  purple  beneath  his  clothing  whenever  he  used  electro.

it's  not  immediately  apparent,  but  most  of  ren's  bodysuit  is  actually  backless.  there's  an  opening  that  spans  roughly  below  his  shoulders  to  the  middle  of  his  back  —  that's  how  he  REMOVES  it.  there  are  no  buttons  or  zippers;  it's  a  stretchy  fabric,  kind  of  like  a  very  durable  spandex.  the  opening  also  allows  easier  access  to  what  i  like  to  call  his  usb  ports  —  or  the  places  where  he  was  plugged  into  his  robot,  which  effectively  serve  the  same  purpose.

i  just  think  it's  very  funny  that  the  one  “major”  disagreement  kazuha  and  ren  have  in  their  entire  relationship  is  NOT  over  any  of  ren's  past  atrocities ...  but  rather  the  fact  that  kazuha  has  a  sword  he  thinks  is  plain  and  ugly  and  ren  won't  stop  pestering  him  to  replace  it.  (  he  won't.  )

scaramouche  does  his  whole  teleporting  schtick  pretty  flawlessly  (  though  it  isn't  actually  teleporting  so  much  as  he  is  turning  himself  into  electricity  like  an  alternate  sprint  )  but  i've  always  liked  to  imagine  there  was  a  time  when  that  WASN'T  the  case  —  and  when  he  was  first  growing  accustomed  to  it,  he  definitely  smacked  into  a  walls  /  trees  /  furniture  /  etc.  or  he  would  return  to  his  normal  form  and  trip  over  his  own  feet  from  the  momentum.  he  will  NEVER  actually  acknowledge  that  era  of  figuring  out  how  his  power  worked,  but  it  happened  and  it  was  embarrassing.

my  favorite  ongoing  theme  with  most  of  my  scaramouche  interactions  (  on  here  and  on  the  old  blog  )  is  how  he  has  a  horrific  knack  for  making  everyone  around  him  WORSE.  he's  a  toxic  influence  to  such  a  degree,  you  could  argue  it's  practically  LITERAL  —  as  if  his  mere  presence  is  somehow  poisonous.  if  you  associate  with  him,  he  will  break  you  and  leave  you  an  objectively  worse  person.  the  only  difference  is  what  form  it  takes;  whether  by  literally  breaking  you  or  simply  manipulating  you  into  stooping  to  his  level.  (  or  both.  )  he  is  so  malicious  and  spiteful  and  angry  at  the  world  that  he  has  to  make  everyone  just  as  miserable  as  he  is.  he  has  been  shown  life  is  tragedy  and  betrayal  and  he  will  FORCE  YOU  to  share  in  his  perspective.  he  will  normalize  those  atrocities.

scaramouche  is  legitimately  just  the  personification  of  hurt  people  hurt  people.  and  make  no  mistake  —  his  own  trauma  doesn't  make  his  own  actions  any  less  inexcusable.  it's  just  awfully  telling  how  he's  always  purposefully  perpetuating  this  cycle  of  cruelty  because  he  cannot  stand  being  alone  in  his  suffering.

rolling  around  the  idea  that  when  he  sustains  severe  injuries,  there's  a  chance  you  may  actually  glimpse  tiny  flashes  of  electro  emanating  from  the  wound  as  ren's  body  acts  to  repair  the  damage.  it  doesn't  happen  often  —  only  in  situations  wherein  the  trauma  is  extensive  enough  to  expose  his  inner  workings.  visually,  it  isn't  unlike  sparks  shooting  from  a  malfunctioning  machine.

listen,  ren  ABSOLUTELY  knows  how  to  be  sneaky  and  pick  locks  —  but  i  am  perpetually  delighted  by  the  mental  image  of  him  calmly kicking  the  door  from  its  hinges  or  tearing  off  the  handle  because  he  isn't  in  the  mood  to  bother  with  SUBTLETY.

i  made  a  post  early  on  in  this  blog's  lifespan  about  how  ren  would  occasionally  have  these  moments  where  the  grief  became  overwhelming,  when  the  anger  and  shame  would  grow  too  violent  to  control  —  and  his  usual  coping  mechanism  would  be  to  go  somewhere  very  isolated  and  SELF  DESTRUCT.  scream.  cry.  reduce  trees  to  splinters.  an  ugly,  ugly,  ugly  outburst  that  feels  more  akin  to  the  tantrum  of  a  child  gifted  incredible ( and dangerous )  power.  there  is  so  much  pain  inside  of  him  that  he  doesn't  know  how  to  process  in  a  healthy  manner  —  that  he  has  never  been  TAUGHT  how  to  process  in  a  healthy  manner,  and  the  only  way  he  knows  how  to  vent  his  frustrations  is  by  turning  those  destructive  feelings  outward.

i  like  to  run  my  blog  with  a  sense  of  continuity  and  story  progression.  time  doesn't  stay  stagnant;  interactions  and  relationships  will  influence  my  muse  going  forward,  other  characters  may  occasionally  be  mentioned  in  threads  they  don't  appear  in.  all  this  to  say,  i'd  like  to  think  over  the  past  year,  ren  has  slowly  come  to  a  point  where  he  doesn't  have  these  outbursts  anymore  —  or  if  he  does,  they've  become  so  rare  that  they're  more  isolated  incidents  than  a  pattern  of  BEHAVIOR.  he  is  still  hurting.  he  is  still  learning  how  to  forgive  himself.  he  is  still  unraveling  the  mess  inside  his  head  and  trying  to  figure  out  how  to  live  with  the  ghosts  of  all  the  people  he's  wronged.  but  he  has  learned  at  least  how  to  take  it  one  day  at  a  time  and  sometimes  even  allow  himself  to  enjoy  tiny  things  while  ignoring  the  voice  that  tells  him  he  doesn't  deserve  it. he's created genuine relationships despite kicking and screaming in PROTEST all the while.

it  hasn't  been  constant  improvement;  he's  relapsed  back  into  old  habits  and  sabotaged  himself  at  every  turn  —  but  little  by  little,  he  is  getting  better.  even  if  he  only  inches  along  in  these  infinitesimally  small  increments,  he's  still  in  a  HEALTHIER  PLACE  than  he  was  a  year  ago  and  it's  just very  sweet  to  see. ren may not believe it, but he's healing.

scaramouche  actually  respected  the  other  harbingers  (  and  most  of  his  associates  in  the  fatui,  for  that  matter  )  so  little  he  DELIBERATELY  went  out  of  his  way  not  to  learn  most  of  their  actual names.

a  small  detail  i  always  get  a  little  soft  about  is  the  fact  that  ren  didn't  actually  realize  blue  was  his  favorite  color  until  AFTER  irminsul  spat  him  out  with  his  wanderer  look  (  because  the  entire  outfit  is  a  manifestation  of  his  subconscious  clothing  preferences  )  and  now  he  secretly  gets  a  tiny  bit  excited  whenever  he  has  the  option  to  pick  "the  blue  thing"  in  any  given  situation.
