 there have certainly been lifetimes lived,    entire eras of their lives,    that have passed in the time between the girls they were and the women life has made them.    it had been nice    -    however brief it had been in the grand scheme of things    -    to have a friend in a similar boat.    young women trying to forge their paths in male-dominated worlds:    worlds that always seemed determined to try and pit them against each other as if there weren't already enough battles waiting for them to play needed roles.   (   they lost touch and,    truly,    maeve cannot blame it on either of them.    she has always been a temporary thing in people's lives and that is not a fact she has imagined changing.    )    sharp scar remains brutally clear even when fringe stays over bullet's entry wound:    crisp and cruel on side of otherwise unmarked forehead.

@jurati​ is correct.    she's not fine,    she may never be fine again. but as long as she is useful,    it makes breathing a little easier.     ❝   trust me,    you don't want me to be too much of a mess too fast.    I may never collect myself again.   ❞      dry joke does not come without fondness:    no bite to it no matter how scientist may focus on keeping herself together.    ❝   it's been...    a long few years.   ❞    and,    in truth,    perhaps brunette was isolated long before bobby and his toxic brand of love decided to cut her off from rest of world    -    before diane and her undeserved wrath came storming in to make bad years worse.    ❝   who can say if I even remember what fine really is other than a state of mind?   ❞
