Paintbrush
(1096 words)
"Really, it's quite fascinating, these trends," the bald man across the table said, smiling. He was short and pudgy, and reminded Gina of the works of Eduard von Grutzner, most famous for his lovingly detailed paintings of fat, sassy monks drinking wine. "You're young, and don't remember, and I admit, I wasn't there, myself, but my grandfather, a great man, he was there, and he told me all about what it was like in the bad old days before the war ended. A shame I never had kids of my own... Nobody to tell the story of this war."
Gina had no idea what the war was about, only that one was starting, and that the military needed as many warm bodies as it could get to crew its ships. Gina had performed well on the mental tests and poorly on the physical ones, and was thus handed over to the Engineering Corps.
"It's like a pendulum, or a circle," the bald man continued, picking at his rations. They'd mastered FTL travel and clean energy, but making appetizing rations was still beyond humanity. "Things repeat. Three generations of peace and prosperity... then a generation of war to ruin all the progress we've made."
Gina didn't respond. She didn't care much about history, or current events. She just missed her home.
Conscripts like Gina were stuck into support vessels, with Gina specifically being put on board the HMS Spirit Of Compassion, formerly the MR Taco Truck according to Coxswain Morgan, the former owner of the ship. There were only seven engineering corpsmen on board, including Gina, which struck her as somewhat odd for a ship that was hauling several thousand tons of supplies. One of the Engineers had enlisted with the military willingly, before the war started, and had the rank of Commander to show for it. Gina thought she had an interesting look about her, and wished for some paints and a brush.
The Engineers worked in three sets of two-person shifts, each lasting eight hours. Commander Johnson, in an effort to give the Engineers time to rest, would take one shift from each Engineer every week in a rotating schedule. One day off out of seven wasn't much to Gina, and was, at the same time, too much time. She was more than accustomed to working without extended breaks, and while her duty shifts weren't exactly engaging, it was at least something to do. Gina was constantly bored on the Spirit of Compassion, and none of the distractions in the recreation room appealed to her overmuch.
Gina found herself appreciating the days when Commander Johnson filled in for her partner, a short little thing who introduced herself as Nicole while talking a mile a minute. Gina had no clue how to respond to Nicole, and settled for silence. Maybe Nicole just talked because she was uncomfortable with silence. Gina didn't know, and didn't particularly care. Commander Johnson didn't talk much, which was a blessing.
"What are you going back to, after this?" Commander Johnson asked one day, breaking an amicable silence that had lasted several hours. "Anyone you miss?"
"No," Gina said. "Miss painting, though."
"An artist, huh?" Commander Johnson asked, in that exact tone that told Gina just what the Commander thought about artists. On one hand, the fact that nobody had to work for a living meant that art was booming because artists didn't have to choose between survival and making art, but on the other hand, some people still looked down on those who didn't work for the corporations or the government, calling them useless moochers.
"Yes sir," Gina ground out.
"Where'd you upload your art to?" Commander Johnson asked.
"Walls, sir," Gina said, gripping the armrests of her chair tightly.
"Oh, you're that kind of painter," Commander Johnson said. Gina was quite familiar with the sentiment- any art that had the audacity to take up physical space was an exercise in vanity, and real artists worked in digital. Gina had always wanted to tell the "real" artists where to shove their tablet pens. "Hmph. Was gonna ask if you took commissions."
"I don't, sir," Gina said. For all that Nicole was a chatterbox, at least Nicole had never insulted Gina directly to her face like this.
Commander Johnson, thankfully, was willing to let the conversation drop after this.
The days dragged on, becoming weeks, and then months. Gina genuinely could not recall how long she'd been on this ship, and was in the slow but certain process of losing her mind. The standard-issue touchscreen tablets they had been given had nothing worthwhile on them, and didn't even have the decency to include a basic drawing app. There was no paper on board, either- the government had finally, at long last, fulfilled the promise of the paperless office, and Gina couldn't even doodle with a pen on the back of an old report.
The only thing Gina could draw with was her own blood on the wall, and that had put her on three days of mandatory medical leave, which only left her even more restless and irritable.
Gina was laying in her bunk, stewing in misery, when Nicole walked in, looking nervous.
"What," Gina said flatly.
"I, uh... I have something for you," Nicole said, holding her tablet in front of her. "Commander Johnson told me you were a painter, and..." Nicole nervously tapped at the screen of her tablet, and Gina's own tablet buzzed with a notification. She pulled it off her nightstand, and read the notification- Cadet Cartwright would like to share file Gift.exe
She hit accept, and watched the download bar speed across her screen- it must not have been a particularly large file. It opened on its own, and...
"It's a painting app," Nicole explained. "I know it's not what you prefer, but... I hoped it was close enough."
Gina just stared listlessly at the screen, unblinking. Nicole coughed a few times, and after a few minutes, excused herself.
About a month later, Nicole woke up to find several large image files in her inbox. The first one was an impressive merger of landscape and calligraphy, a verdant green forest with the words "Thank you" written in the clouds. The next one was Nicole in a billowing white dress, with feathery wings, against a backdrop of clouds. The rest were an assortment of still lifes, a few ship paintings, and portraits of the various crew members.
Nicole smiled. Programming a painting app into the tablets had been a pain, but it had been worth the trouble.
