Those questions are hard when you've been watching anime for +10 years like me because there's soooooo many things I've seen, I don't know how to classify them.

Well I sure am upset about never getting more Yuri On Ice content but I don't think that answers the question-

I'd say Hinata being blocked by Aoba Josai at their first official match, he opens his eyes and the ball falls on the court. I was sooooo mad. It was an amazing piece of art and scenaristic choice, they all needed that for character development. But it was fucking upsetting. I was invested. I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT MY ANSWER TO THIS ALL DAY (AND EVER SINCE U FIRST RECOMMENDED THE FIC TO ME TBH) AND I JUST... first of all, i haven't finished it yet, i stopped at chapter 11 because i had to sleep so these are my thoughts so far. i may have missed a thing or two but this is the gist.

so i made note of the scenes/lines that had me screaming my head off and i will share them/discuss them under the cut <3

starting lighthearted with gojo things i found absolutely hilarious

"maybe later he could trot over to lawson's and get himself a nice juice box, then a chocolate coolish ice cream pouch. yeah, that's the shit right there."

THE THINGS HE SAYS TO US. it reminds me very much of touya because it's affectionate for a guy like him but still teasing and playful. these lines had me blushing so hard and kicking my feet and giggling. the use of petnames like "lil' baby" and "baby girl" and him telling you to "c'mere'n let me see yer cute face" ohhhhh my god.......

not to mention, i love his accent very much. country boyyy i love youuuuu.

"'c'mon now,' he mutters, turning his head to the side so he can press a kiss to your temple. 'why didn'tcha say somethin' earlier if it bothered you that much, you dumb baby.'"

this scene really changed everything for me... i will expand on this more later but the connection they have... their loyalty to each other... or moreso their desire to just have each other.

"a man, the man who had humiliated maki's mother many times, spoke hideous things about her children within earshot, is straining to call one of his other cousins because fuck fuck fuck why aren't you answering. his eyes soften and he's not exactly sure if it's because of the sweat in his eyes or the picture that you had just sent two minutes ago, a picture of you and the new lipstick you're trying on. you look so pretty. fuck. he's gonna cry."

I SAVED THIS ONE BEFORE THE SECOND POV CHAPTER THAT WENT MORE IN-DEPTH ON NAOYA'S FEELINGS AND THAT ONE – I WAS ALREADY DYING BUT THAT FINISHED ME OFF! this fic is so well-written that i felt grief for this fucking man. grief for naoya fucking zen'in of all people. it left a hole in my chest and i haven't felt this grief since [REDACTED REDACTED] in csm.

especially later, when reader was remembering her honeymoon in amalfi coast, when they were driving in the convertible and lost her scarf. for some reason that flashback made me so sad.

"'that girl will be your downfall,' is what his father tells him later on that day. naoya wants to believe that. maybe you'll be the one to drag him to hell. that would be nice. he'd be back home. he'll always come home. if that's where you're at, he'll always come home."

OKAY... we are almost to the end of it <3

"'wait. oh my god, wait. wait. no way. you... you loved him? you actually loved naoya? naoya? zen'in naoya?'

your eyes sting hot, and you're not sure if it's because he's speaking ill of your very dead husband or because you're taking it personally for having loved the horrible man.

there's something about how you feel when it comes to naoya. defensive, even. you're certain that although love and family had been a difficult, complicated subject for the man, he fucked you like he loved you. like you had been a very fragile thing that he needed to care for – and he did. he always did; had always cared for you in ways that no one else would. or at least, he cared for you in ways that no one else would or could within a fifty-mile radius.

'babe, really?'

for all of his acid and harsh angles and sharp tongue, naoya was someone who took care of you and protected you. he made you feel wanted and safe and cherished and by the gods even if he didn't actually say it, he made you feel loved. that's what mattered to you. now, at least. maybe too much, even."

THIS WAS A FUCKING INSANE MOMENT TO ME reader wondering a few chapters ago whether or not she loved naoya and admitting now that she did, so very much so.

this really resonated with me in particular, not to get all wah-wah pity party but i've dealt with a lot of relationship trauma and all i've got to show for it is a crippling fear of abandonment. this type of love is therapeutic to me. when your person loves you and only you, there's nobody to compete with because they don't give half a shit about anyone else. you're the only one that sees that soft part of them, dare i say the real them.

THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS I FORGOT TO WRITE DOWN BUT THIS FIC HAS CHANGED MY LIFE IN WAYS THAT I CANNOT COMPREHEND AND I AM NOT EVEN HALFWAY DONE.

another thing that made me very happy was seeing a lot of similarities in how the author characterizes naoya & how i've been characterizing him for the menthol prequel. fucking daddy issues central. naoya being a contradiction of himself because he's everything a zen'in should be, and yet he has these haunting moments of clarity where he realizes that's the last thing he wants to be... and yet nothing changes. he will be this way until he dies, and he was this way until he died. not that this man deserves tenderness because he's evil, but like... the care in which the author handles his character. it's everything to me.

trying my hardest but like oh my god it's going to be hard to let myself fall for gojo because the man the author wrote naoya to be. the husband he was. the deep, profound love he had that's even more special because it's all the love he has and it's all for you.

The cellar is ice cold and with nothing but your nightwear on, the air nips at your bones. It hurts but you are unable to complain. Perhaps it is because your father doesn’t care to listen, or perhaps it is because there are worse things to complain about at the moment besides the cold.

The scent of burnt flesh is much worse. It permeates the air around you like a wet blanket.

“What is the issue?” Your father asks in annoyance.

You hover over the corpse, a man with cauterized wounds caused by the Innate Technique of Ougi Zen’in, and cover your nose in disgust.

“There isn’t much of him,” you answer.

You have no idea how long the body has been dead or why someone would attempt to attack the Zen’in Clan, but you want nothing to do with it. Too bad you can’t disobey your father.

“Put aside your complaints and use your ability,” your father orders. “It doesn’t matter how much there is of him.”

You know this. It’s the fact that he’s nothing more than a torso that disturbs you.

You sigh and activate your Innate Technique. A large black centipede with a bright red head made of cursed energy materializes around you. It’s many yellow pointed legs make your skin crawl as it lifts up behind you with a hiss, then goes for the corpse of the man, munching on his flesh. It’s disgusting, but in doing so, you are able to see his last memories before his cursed energy fades completely.

“He was alone in the compound,” you utter as you see the man moments before he encountered Ougi. He is rather young with short brown hair. “But not alone in his task. There are two others with him; a man and a woman with cursed tools but they don’t appear to be sorcerers. They fled long before this man died.”

“What else?” Your father asks.

You notice a symbol on the woman’s clothing and then the memory cuts out. The torso’s cursed energy is gone. Your Innate Technique vanishes with it, leaving a mangled hunk of flesh in its wake.

“I saw a flower inside another flower, a family crest. But I don’t recognize it. If I saw it again, I might be able to point it out,” you answer.

Your father sighs.

“Even a little bit of information is better than nothing I suppose. I need to report this to Naobito-san. Return to your room in the meantime. I’m sure he will ask to speak with you in the morning.”

You stand and bow in reply.

“Yes, father.”

Bringing your hands up to cover your bear arms, you ascend the stairs and walk in silence back to your bedroom. The Zen’in household is rather large, but it takes you no time at all to get back. You had been there, resting when your father had sent for you.

The brown-haired attacker had struck in the middle of the night, but he never made it past Ougi; he never would have survived an attack from the Hei or the Kukuru for that matter, the clan’s strongest units.

It’s a shame, but knowing how strong the Zen’in are, the unnamed sorcerer had broken into the household anyway. Was he after Naobito’s life? Many enemies in that past had tried to kill the 26th Head of the Zen’in family for various reasons, but to no avail. Perhaps he and the others had been trying to steal the cursed tools in the warehouse. If only you ––

A sudden tug on your pinky makes your heart pound erratically. You glance down at the red string that materializes into thin air and an eager grin pulls at your lips.

Your soulmate is nearby otherwise the string remains invisible.

You snatch the blanket from your bed and toss it around your shoulders, rushing outside onto the engawa. It’s a cold and autumn night, but you don’t mind. You sit down and stare out at the courtyard, toying with the string.

It’s an unspoken thing your soulmate and you do often when they are nearby, almost like a way of saying hello to one another.

A playful tug makes you snort. They are always trying to sway you into finding them. You want to venture out past the compound, but you know the consequences are too great. This doesn’t stop you from considering it though. What harm will it do your father if you walk to the end of the property line and have a look?

Fate is cruel, however.

“Are you done already?” A familiar voice asks in spite. “I thought I’d have to wait longer to speak with you.”

You avert your eyes seeing your cousin Naoya walking down the veranda towards you. His short blond hair sways in the breeze as he approaches. He’s sixteen, a year younger than you, but he acts like he’s older – and much better than you.

“There wasn’t much to look at,” you answer honestly.

Naoya grins.

“As expected of Uncle Ougi. But you did see the idiot’s memories, didn’t you?”

You nod.

“Don’t be shy. Tell me what you saw,” Naoya orders.

It’s none of his business. You frown and turn your attention back to the string as it tightens around your pinkie.

“I can’t tell you. Uncle Naobito is the only one who is privy to that information. Just know that it doesn’t concern you.”

Naoya grunts in annoyance.

“Whatever.”

He leans down and grabs your hand staring at the weaving string; his own is invisible, an indication that his soulmate is far away. It’s hard sometimes to believe that there is someone out there for him; everyone has a soulmate, but Naoya doesn’t seem to care.

“Do you not ever wonder who might be on the other end?” Naoya asks.

You do, but it doesn’t matter.

“I’m a Zen’in. My father will decide who I marry, if I should ever.”

Naoya laughs.

“For a failure, you sure do follow the rules thoroughly.”

He leans down near your ear.

“That’s a smart girl. Because if it wasn’t for your unique Innate Technique, then you’d be rejected from the clan.”

You are aware. Unlike the majority of the clan, your technique is not suitable for battle; its only purpose is to relay memories to you via cursed energy. Uncle Naobito finds it useful. Though it’s a shame you can’t just turn your back on the clan; your father would never let you leave.

“I’ll stay loyal to the Zen’in Clan,” you utter with a sigh. “It’s my only purpose.”

Naoya laughs in your ear.

“When I become Head of the Clan, I hope you don’t forget that. Because whatever freedom you have now will be long gone.”

What freedom? The privilege to walk to and from your bedroom. You snort in reply.

Naoya releases your hand and walks away, leaving you alone again. The string jerks in question but you are in no mood to react to it.

Warm tears blur your eyes as you stare at it, following the curious red string as it weaves across the ground and disappears from your sight.

“Come and save me,” you whisper.

It’s a pipe dream; no one is strong enough to save you from your fate, but you can only hope.

The moment 148 came out--where I ignored all the great semi-political intrigue and worldbuilding scraps LOL--and now. with 151 drop. good lord I feel only vindication. I feel the soulbond between myself and Akutami strengthening with every passing moment.

I wish I had something like . intellectual or insightful to say about the implications towards their dynamic or anything like that aside from LOOL I was right xx the absolute desperation to be special (not only in general but to Toji in particular..!)... the necessary concessions and the little qualifications Naoya makes to self affirm... the externalization of insecurity (which is obviously like. super insidious and simply impermissible in Naoya's little waka-sama entitlement brain) onto Maki is really just the icing good lord... Thank you Akutami... Man.. For such a piece of garbage Naoya's writing is soooo (head in hands)

I suppose that's the short of it djhfjd since there is just so much Feeling to untangle esp. with the injection of the like? rigid scaffold for the dynamics as they're meant to exist under Zen'in structure and then the ways they actually manifest argh argh too many words. I think my main point is: wow I love being right and this manga is insane. I'm just going to ignore everything else going on.

Sorry for the late reply! I've been doing things here and there, mainly because I'm slowly starting to get busy with my work, but we here now!!

I'm so glad you liked the new chapter!!! And that it evoked that kind of reaction from you hahahahah I was sooo nervous, mainly because I thought everyone was expecting something different? But at the end of the day, it's important to stay with my original vision of the story and go from there :3

Awww writing a flustered Y/N was like a dream!!! I always liked that kind of trope when it comes to romance, because I guess some of us have been in that position that feel as if we gonna do something to mess the friendship up hahaha but I also like the other side of the spectrum—I wonder if we'll see it in this fic?

AND I DONT KNOW 😭😭 I DONT KNOW WHY JINICHI WAS COMFORTABLE TELLING Y/N THAT I mean, ah, he probably was having like a moment of weakness, you know? He saw his brother's room being noticed and he was like ok, maybe I'm not the only one that has forgotten about my brother (Even though Y/N doesn't know who Toji is lmao) she was probably the first person in a long time he's to spoken about Toji. EITHER WAY THERE IS SUCH A THING CALLED OVERSHARING and she certainly didn't need that right now.

But I gotta say, I like putting hints about Toji here and there hehe and I'm glad you liked them! I feel like you can't talk about the Zen'in without mentioning him (considering how the clan basically exists because he allowed it lmao)

Now onto the shock of the season: Naoaki. 🥺 I'm going to haunt him for the rest of his life if he decides to do something wrong towards Y/N, but there's no denying he's been doing so much for her 😭 why must he confuse us like this :'(

And finally... Naoya. I wanted to portray his delusions hahahah how distracted he can get when things are seemingly going his way, only to fall right back down to reality. He just does bad things over and over again, I'm finding it hard to like him too but omg I guess I'm holding on because he's handsome (AND I GOTTA SAY, NOT THE MOST HANDSOME ZEN'IN SO HE'S ON THIN ICE) but yeah, that was unnecessary cruel from him :( he likes to say that he cares about Y/N but then does that shit 🙄 no wonder she likes Naoaki more and more each day.

But we shall see what happens next chapter :3 I feel like I say this allot, but the next chapter is like hand down, one of the moments I've been wanting to write since the beginning of the story, and I hope to pull it off!! I can't wait for you to read it ❤ (and after that, a break!!)
