they also have a very weird and specific distaste for green gatorade. ( green apple ) no, they can't justify it. in fact, they won't justify it.

thinking about hotaru again ( yeah i know what's new ) but like. specifically hotaru in their earlier years still getting used to pretending to be an e.xo. "polaris-1" who is regarded as kind -- sweet, even, but there's something a bit... off about her in a way that nobody can put their finger on. 'polaris-1' who people just start assuming that the reason they're a bit off is because they're probably some experimental prototype model that was never supposed to see the light of day. some bra.ytech scientist probably woke up and randomly chose violence and a few extra human rights violations while building them, & should anyone really hold that against them? because why else would such a small e.xo have a full head of hair if not from the whims of a cruel creator?

( because that's easier than trying to explain the primordial fear that can suddenly seize you if you look a little too close at their mouth, or the sudden dread that fills your stomach when you realize "polaris-1's" right arm is almost unnaturally stiff compared to their left. safer, even. )

'polaris-1' who sacrificed their identity and a piece of themself so they can help this growing settlement under the trav.eler. 'polaris-1' who's still a bit nervous to walk around in broad daylight. 'polaris-1' who people whisper about seeing a flash of teeth underneath their faceplate. 'polaris-1' who only survives because any inkling of what they could be is forgotten somewhere along the way, because there's more pressing matters at hand. because eventually, there's a city to build. & after that, there's a city to defend.

( & yet, there's a part of them that wants someone --- anyone to see the terrified cyborg just below the surface. maybe it's only human to crave being understood. )

random headcanon time: in addition to gardening, cooking, and shredding on their longboard / skimmer / skateboard, one of hotaru's other hobbies is music! they own an omnichord, an acoustic guitar, and ( most importantly ) an electric guitar that they play with their cybernetic hand to become their own amp. ( they're also learning how to play a 9-string ! )

they'd also pick up the electric violin and fuck around with drums, imo.

chamomile : what is your muse likely to take away from a painful experience ? are they one to be haunted by adversity , or to use what they’ve gone through to become stronger ?

short answer: their ass is ETERNALLY HAUNTED. longer answer: grief is a very complex subject for hotaru because as someone who loves people with every fiber of their being - be it familial, romantic, or platonic - they view their grief as proof that the love was there. after all, who are they if not a tapestry of the people they loved & loved them in return ? the experiences they shared with them? the love was there, and it was real, and in that way, they carry a piece of that person with them. but initially, the absence of that intense devotion is horrific for them to go through. hotaru will straight up isolate themself - tending to focus on helping others affected by that loss so they don't have to focus on their own grief. they're terrified of breaking down around people that aren't lumax, bones, or tomomi, but they do need help. if you hug them, they'll bawl for hours until they finally tire themself out. afterwards? oh fucking boy. if the person in question was killed, you better hope that you had nothing to do with it. hotaru gets angry, sure, but they also get even. and if you hurt or kill one of hotaru's loved ones, you will have to answer to a pissed off cyborg that's ready to fold you like a cheap lawnchair.

hyacinth : is your muse athletic ? does it come naturally to them , or have they had to work for their physique and/or skill ?

OH THIS IS SO INTERESTING ACTUALLY. so you'd think that a 5'4 warlock who was, in their past life, a scientist with four doctorates and set to revolutionize biomedical and prosthetic technology would be this stereotypical 90 pounds soaking wet nerd. except hotaru's not exactly a great example of a warlock. and hotaru also loves being active. it's how they cope with stress and their excessive amounts of energy! if they can't sleep, they're out in the streets of the last city on either a skimmer, skateboard or a longboard. on their days off, if it's a nice day, they'll sometimes strap on some rollerblades and just... take off to some unknown point in the city. they'll straight up have a backpack full of snacks and drinks to last them for several hours so they can just explore and vibe. if they're assigned to europa, you WILL see them shredding! those! slopes! it's SO fun for them. and as a guardian, they've taken FULL advantage of their long life to pick up even more skills, like boxing and several forms of martial arts. but in general, hotaru naturally gravitates to more fast-paced activities & finds it rewarding and fufilling to be active. and because they're so active, the obvious side effect is that even without their cybernetics, hotaru is fucking STRONG. like. please imagine hotaru in streetwear / activewear with some wired earbuds or some “retro” ( by destiny standards ) headphones, absolutely ZONED OUT, LOCKED IN and chaining several skateboard tricks like they're in pro skater 3. they are straight vibing. they have a banger playlist. they somehow have not hit anyone or anything. they have been at this since 4am because they couldn't sleep & it is now 2 in the afternoon. they cannot and will not be stopped , i fear <3

alright. time to expand on the post i made this morning besties.

re: hotaru abandoning the mantle / "mask" of polaris-1 during into the light / pre-final shape: it's a choice that they come to that is insanely personal to them. hotaru has been masquerading as an exomind for centuries by the time the final shape rolls around as a trauma response from when they were first raised. they were murked so many times by freaked out lightless and risen alike that they figured it'd be infinitely easier to pretend they were an exomin.d. because at least then, they'd still get to help people. and there were still things that they couldn't exactly mimic or naill, but their comrades chalked it up as clovi.s getting experimental with his warcrimes to make polaris-1 and left it at that.

but then the witness's forces flood the city. the final conflict with the witness, the darkness, looms heavy over the guardia.ns, and hotaru is intensely aware that this might be the god they can't slay. this might be the mission she doesn't come back from. and if they don't make it back, there were few that knew of her as hotaru. would they have to be buried in their mask?

so hotaru decides that she'd rather be hated by some as her true self than loved as a lie. that maybe, if the last cit.y can live in harmony & find community with empress ca.iatl and her imperial ca.bal, and stand shoulder to shoulder with misra.akskel and house light...

... maybe there would be a place in the city for her, too.

( it was never going to be as bad as they thought, by the way. full disclosure, hotaru's trauma made them absolutely terrified of people finding out about them being an exoborg and arguably warped their perception of what the average last city citizen would think of them. it's not the dark ages anymore, and while there's definitely a chunk of last city denizens that aren't jazzed about The Guardian lying to the entire city, it's not like they're in insane amounts of Imminent Danger. smthn smthn to hotaru, hell is other people & the literal impostor syndrome she locked herself in to protect themself from said hell. )

thinking about them ( blair - takenaka hotaru , the guardian ) and how much they love lumax ( the ghost with the most, the best blorbo )

like i cannot stress how much hotaru and lumax are so inseparable that i consider them to be two halves of a whole. functionally you cannot have a guardian without their ghost, sure - a ghost is literally the prerequisite to BE a capital g Guardian, your connection to the light of the traveler , and the reason why guardians can't stay dead and are functionally immortals. and yes, the young wolf and little light ( the player character and ghost ) care for each other! there are also guardians and ghosts who hate each other . katabasis from presage comes to mind, specifically- his ghost kept rezzing him so he could die repeatedly. & to a lesser extent, the drifter and his ghost also do not get along, at all. but i'd argue that hotaru and lumax are closer than even the young wolf and little light are.

on this blog, hotaru and lumax will always be presented as two halves of the same "character" of the guardian. outside of that, you'll probably notice that lumax pops up even in non-destiny aus. she can be hotaru's human bestie, a spider that bites her & travels with her in earth-404, an A/I hotaru programs, a robot hotaru builds, or even just Hotaru's Cat. but the constant is that somehow, some way, hotaru and lumax always find each other, because they are two halves of a whole. and i think that's beautiful. you can't truly have hotaru without lumax, and you can't have lumax without hotaru. they are inseperable & they genuinely love each other & consider each other family in a way that transcends the ghost / guardian bond. hotaru protects lumax out of love and respect, and lumax would lay down her life for hotaru as much as they actively try to discourage her from doing so because hotaru fears the person she would become without her.

and on that note, fun fact: hotaru actually sleeps curled up around lumax! either that or lumax will nestle in her hair or hotaru will cradle her to their generator. it goes all the way back from hotaru's initial resurrection - the first thing lumax heard when she succeeded was hotaru's heartbeat and the whir from her generator, and the first thing she felt was being held by her guardian's hands. it also stems from the fact that hotaru and lumax are from the dark ages, a period in destiny lore thats ruled by violence and some Evil Ass Lightbearers called warlords. it's a survival instinct for hotaru to protect her smaller-than average ghost at all times as much as it is for comfort. lumax WILL cry if she's forcibly separated from her guardian and hotaru will do ANYTHING to get her ghost back, which has resulted in serious violence on hotaru's part. the quickest way to make an enemy of hotaru is to upset lumax, and the quickest way to get lumax to absolutely despise you is to upset hotaru. you cannot have one of them without the other. hotaru will not even consider being friends with you if you aren't at least civil or kind to her ghost.

just like you can't have lightning without thunder, you can't have hotaru without lumax. and i think that's neat.

kicks the door in while i'm on my lunch break at work. i think more people should call hotaru cute / pretty / handsome / beautiful, etc. and watch them blush soooo hard. they get so shy and giggly whenever they're complimented, they'll grin from ear and bashfully compliment you back and it's Adorable, Actually. and destiny hotaru in particular? all of those lights on their body? yeah, they turn pink the more you fluster them. their eyes even turn pink and heart shaped. steam starts leaking from their vents. they'll lose their balance and flip upside down. its adorable. I LOVE THEM .

whether it’s your turbulent nature, your flash quick mind, or the air of unknown about you, your undercurrent is the lightning rod. you are somewhat unpredictable, but if we unravelled we’d see you know exactly what you’re doing, but it’s makes you feel less vulnerable to pretend it wasn’t planned. some people stay back from you, but others would follow you cross country, for the very same reason. they don’t know enough about you. the difference is in who wants to learn more. keep your golden nature, it’s exciting, but don’t be afraid to admit what you know. matshona dhliwayo said “lightning strikes but does not roar” your bite will always be worse than your bark, keep that close to your chest.

this personnel document is for the eyes of jujutsu hq, supervisors & authorized personnel only. this file has been compiled by supervisors [ ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ ] , [ ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ ], and [ ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ ] , with additional input from headmaster masamichi yaga & interviews with other sorcerers.

i. overview.

name: blair-takenaka hotaru age: 27 pronouns: they / she rank: grade 1 sorcerer occupation: science & technique development instructor at tokyo jujutsu high. occasional field agent. cursed tools: raijū's fang, grade 1. a sword said to have been forged from the fang of a cursed spirit that could harness lightning. can store up to four "charges" of blair-takenaka's excess cursed energy. fighting style: unarmed melee combat & swordplay, rapid movement, & limited ranged technique options. strengths: quick to medium - length engagements. ambush tactics. unparalleled skill in hand to hand combat. close to midrange fighting. strong will. agile. relentless. weaknesses: prolonged engagements. prone to exhaustion when expending too much cursed energy. observed to require an abnormal caloric intake to offset their cursed technique. more powerful techniques require buildup of cursed energy in the environment. at a disadvantage with primarily long range combatants. known affiliates ( name , grade ) : kento nanami , grade 1 ( @juhotookaku ) .

OTHER NOTES. > they carry a large canteen filled with a special substance with a high electrolyte count. students report that it appears to look and smell like fruit punch. > her cursed technique will temporarily turn their eyes blue & give them extreme light sensitivity after using the overclock technique on their eyes for extended periods. they carry a pair of sunglasses to combat this , usually resting on their head when not in use. > consistently carries the scent of petrichor, unclear if related to their cursed energy. > when angry, colleagues have reported that the air can feel oppressive, almost like a thunderstorm. > large lichtenberg scar on their back from the [ ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ ] incident. lichtenberg scarring can also been seen extending from their two pointer fingers to about their elbow. sorcerer wears gloves when not on duty or requiring the use of their techniques. > sorcerer has reported mild hearing loss due to repeated close quarters exposure to overclock technique: petricannon over the years.

supervisor's note: due to their technique as detailed in section 2, the longer an engagement drags out, the more dangerous it becomes for blair-takenaka's opponents & on some occasions, herself. caution is advised.

blair-takenaka has been observed as a semi-serious figure in their students live's - rarely joking unless entirely appropriate, and having a certain amount of "professionalism" maintained until off the clock. they seem to frame themselves as someone trustworthy to their students and willing to listen. blair-takenaka has been observed going above and beyond for their students , whether it be with after - school tutoring , general advice , or signing off on school clubs. ( their reasoning for this, as quoted by a student: "if tokyo jujutsu high operates under the guise of a high school to the outside world, you kids should at least get the full high school experience! after all, you're only young once." )

ii. about their technique.

cursed technique: overclock. this cursed technique is a curious case - seeing as blair-takenaka's cursed energy manifests as blue streaks of lightning and carries an ionic charge. any use of her cursed techniques will therefore deposit a certain amount of "charge" into the air, when the leaked cursed energy reaches a certain point, the area acts as a lightning rod & blair-takenaka can use cursed technique: petricannon. ( detailed later. )

cursed technique: overclock's main function, however, is to augment the sorcerer's body. because of their main pact, in normal conditions, they can augment 2 limbs at a time, and one of their five senses. cursed technique: overclock's pact limitations can be lifted if one of three conditions are met:

one. a thunderstorm is occuring. two. blair-takenaka uses domain expansion: thunderdome. three. the hardest condition to meet: if hotaru can reach & maintain a certain amount of their cursed energy in the air, a thunderstorm will surely happen. this condition is harder to meet due to the amount of energy they would need to expend & maintain, & only reliably works in enclosed spaces with a finite amount of room.

in addition, blair-takenaka also has a time based pact: the longer they are in combat, the more cursed energy they can access. this, in turn, makes their blows, strikes, and techniques more potent as time goes on. prolonged engagement is not advised, as it becomes exponentially more dangerous for blair-takenaka as they burn through their own electrolytes & cursed energy, & for her opponent, if they survive.

ii - a. extension techniques.

note: due to the nature of blair-takenaka's technique & their own training, they're more comfortable with improvising techniques and adapting as the situation demands. the following extension techniques are ones that occur frequently enough to be of note & used enough that blair-takenaka has named them. this is not an exhaustive list.

overclock technique : thunderstrike. blair-takenaka overclocks her legs and wields cursed tool: raiju's fang. they appear to strike their foe faster than the eye could track, making 3-4 lacerations on the target's body. however, if the target has been weakened, or is significantly weaker than blair-takenaka, this technique's been known to exorcise cursed spirits by cutting them in half, or multiple, lower-grade spirits.

overclock technique: momentum. this technique consists of blair-takenaka focusing their cursed energy into their legs & building up speed until their fists create concussive impact with every strike. the technique is concluded by blair-takenaka launching themself into the air for a singular overhead strike, freeing up their feet so they can overclock one of their fists.

overclock technique, 40 percent: gauss blaster. as stated in section 2, blair-takenaka's cursed energy will leak into the surrounding area & charge it with ions. once the charge rate reaches a rate of 40 % or higher, gauss blaster, a technique in which blair-takenaka dispels cursed energy in a fingergun motion at the target they point at, can be used. this technique can also accelerate the charge rate if it doesn't strike it's target.

ii-b. ultimate technique.

overclock technique, 100 percent: petricannon. once the air is sufficiently saturated with ions, ultimate technique: petricannon can be activated. using something similar to a reversal technique, blair-takenaka hotaru tags their target with a motion similar to gauss cannon , firing a "bullet" of compressed , reverse cursed energy. after a short delay, the target is then hit by a lightning bolt.

the fastest that hotaru has activated this technique is a battle that lasted four minutes and fourty-four seconds, and the highest amount of petricannon activations they have achieved in conditions not affected by the weather or their domain is four. in return, petricannon takes a considerable amount of concentration and cursed energy.

iii. domain expansion.

domain expansion: thunderdome. a domain characterized by a perpetually thunderstorming forest at twilight, with a river running through the center & dotted by wildflowers. in this domain, petricannon & gauss cannon are immediately available & gauss cannon can be used in rapid succession. petricannon can also strike multiple times. in addition, the augmentation limit is lifted. the domain is broken once blair-takenaka is sufficiently exhausted, or the area's charge rate drops below 40 percent.

also i got tagged in the "what would someone notice about your muse" meme ( everyone say thanks jude ) that i'm slooowly writing up because. man. its really hard to talk about hotaru in these character memes because they're essentially three characters layered on top of each other: polaris-1, the guardian and champion of the city vs blair-takenaka hotaru, the exoborg that has let you see what lies underneath that outer, superficial shell, vs hotaru, who's a layer deeper. where the rage is. where the trauma is. the vengeance. where she's too tired to use hard light to hide the atrocities that have been inflicted on her by braytech. and fundamentally, she's the same person, but the hotaru you see correlates to how safe she feels around you & how much she trusts you.

currently at work & thinking about how hotaru heals people & how it probably leaves the weird aftertaste of ions and lightning in your mouth. how it feels like there's something warm & bright seeping into your injury, curling around your bones & dancing between your teeth. how calloused her fingertips are or the gentle tap of a metallic hand on your shoulder that floods your body with a burst of healing light. if there's no immediate danger, she might even let you rest your head in their lap & get comfy... if you ask them nicely. :/ she might even detatch her cape & let you sit on that while she works!

your hotaru content for the day: if hotaru has a handcannon equipped ( ex. ace, last word, sunshot, ) she WILL use it as a fidget spinner. yes, she does make sure they're unloaded once she's within city limits or enters a town just because she knows herself a little too well. you just see this 5'4 dark age warlock in a vanguard meeting spinning a handcannon like it weighs absolutely nothing so she can actually focus and retain information via stimming and keeping her hands busy like its an idle animation ( all of her fidget spinners have ended up left in various vanguard offices over the years )
