i want to take the time to talk about a series of disabilities that no one takes seriously or even recognizes as a disability, which is food intolerances, and allergies. if a person can get sick if they eat the wrong foods, they are disabled, as this illness will make them unable to function all because they ate the wrong food. it's not okay to guilt someone for seeking foods that won't injure them.
in 2022, i began to lose my ability to digest land meats (pork, chicken, cow, etc.), animal milks, and eggs. it started slowly but quickly progressed to every type of land meat. i am only able to digest seafood, plants, nuts, seeds safely without becoming horribly sick. i tried to buy cow's milk because it is cheaper recently and became so ill it was genuinely traumatic. i have never been that sick in my life before. i cannot safely ingest cow's milk, the cheaper option, because it will injure me for several days or even weeks at a time. this happens to me with all land meats as well.
i cannot eat eggs. i cannot fried rice that has egg, i cannot eat most sauces like mayo or ranch dressing because of their high egg content. i cannot eat anything dressed in mayo as a sauce. anything that is baked or brushed or washed with egg is a risk. my digestive system really hates eggs in particular and they are inescapable.
people who can't digest or process lactose, gluten, meats, seafood, eggs, nuts, seeds, beans, fiber, certain fats, proteins or sugars don't have their needs considered very often, nor taken seriously, especially when that person is poor. people with digestive issues need to be able to eat foods that don't hurt us- it's not our faults that alternative milks, breads, pizzas, snacks, sauces, dips, spreads, meats and more are significantly more expensive. we still need to be able to eat foods that don't harm us regardless of how much money we make.

If you have celiac and buy the brand Van’s for their waffles, please know that 9 days ago there was a recall because some of the packages of the gluten free waffles may contain “undeclared” wheat. And if you have celiac, you know “may” might as well mean “does”.
This recall only applies to boxes with the matching lot codes and numbers, and do not pertain to other products that Van’s has to offer. These boxes were distributed in AZ, CA, FL, GA, IL, NC, & WA. Please check your boxes immediately to ensure your own safety and save yourself the painful reactions to gluten. It’s advised the purchased packages be either thrown out (or given to someone who can eat wheat so as not to waste it) or return the product to where you’ve purchased it from.
“The U.S. Food & Drug Administration website published the recall July 3. It applies to certain packs of Van's Gluten Free Original Waffles with lot code UW40193L, expiration date Jan. 19, 2024, and UPC 0 89947 30206 4. According to the Van's recall, some of the packs of waffles may contain undeclared wheat.”

you know what. i've always been hesitant to describe my anaphylactic food allergies as a disability because "it's just allergies" but if you look at the numerous ways this has affected my life as an adult (because everybody only talks about kids having anaphylactic allergies):
no restaurants or fast food
no store-bought food from small companies (less accountability/resources to prevent cross-contamination)
no candy or desserts (unless they are 100% homemade, which takes a lot of time and energy if you have other disabilities like i do)
no hand-washing dishes (every place i live in has to have a well-functioning dishwasher)
no kissing people on the mouth/lower half of the face
other people cannot kiss me/put their mouth on me
no allergens in the house (really difficult to enforce with non- immediate family members!!)
always having to cook my own meals/bake my own treats/desserts
no sharing drinks/food with other people
no food cooked in other people's houses/kitchens
always having to bring my own "lunchbox" to family events, work or school, all-day events, or any other situation in which i could THEORETICALLY need to eat or drink something other than bottled water
calling food manufacturers to verify label information on new/changed foods
and none of this is counting the avoidance behaviors i developed with obsessive-compulsive disorder around age 13 in response to the panic attacks i'd have remembering about the anaphylactic shock i experienced at age 10.
i was taught to read labels at age 5. i was taught how to use my own epi-pen at age 6. my parents and i have always been careful and responsible about my allergies. it's not "i just don't like this food", it's "if i eat this my throat will swell up and block my trachea AND i'll go into shock from low blood pressure." as inconvenient as it might be for YOU, you can learn these things too and save a life. happy disability pride month; stop being a dickhead
i don't usually talk about my allergies because it gives me a LOT of anxiety but i felt this was important to share, because most people have no idea what being an adult with allergies is like. life went from "everyone at the birthday party gets a cupcake but me and i'm sad" to to "if i want to kiss someone i like, i have to make sure she hasn't eaten anything i'm allergic to in the past few days" (which is like. hugely awkward to ask of someone holy shit) or "i have to turn down the meal from my friend's mom even though she has the best of intentions and now she thinks i'm an asshole"

So I would like to make a post about food allergies given the information I've been taught by my allergist regarding my food allergies.
The difference between food allergy, sensitivity, and intolerance.
Allergy. This is the classic anaphylaxis.
Sensitivity. This is caused by allergies, but the risk here isn't anaphylaxis. It's inflammation in gut that can cause fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, generalized ick feeling.
Intolerance. Your body is literally unable to process the food. It lacks the ability to, which means the food causes inflammation in the gut, causing similar symptoms as sensitivity.
Sensitivities will show up on an allergy test. Intolerance has to take a different test specific for that type of intolerance.
I mention this because I see a lot of fake claiming food allergies that's like "Yeah but I cross contaminated the food with eggs and that didn't kill her. She must be lying." Yeah food sensitivities can be pretty mild. Where if you give them an egg salad, they're gonna be having a bad day. But if you rub egg on their burger, they may not even notice.
Also like there's a lot of medical conditions that can affect a person's diet. They may have stomach issues that means they can't eat a lot of acidic foods, and if saying "Hey, I'm allergic to pineapple" gets you to not put pineapple juice in their drink because it'll cause a flare-up. I'm all for people doing whatever they need to make sure their health is taken seriously. Even if it's outright lying because food allergies is the only fucking thing people seem to take seriously in this world.
Anyways take people's "I can't eat this food" seriously. And don't fake claim them if they go "I can't eat this food but I'm not at risk if there's cross contamination"

ghost would show up on halloween at his girl's house (the one he's been mildly stalking) with an ㅤemptied flower pot from her neighbor's front yard (moment of silence for the onions that now lay uprooted) and even though there's a bowl of candy in the corner, he's still knocking loudly and demanding a treat and when she timidly drops a snickers bar into the pot that's still got clumps of fresh dirt in it, he's telling her that's not the treat he wants.
#those onions were growing so nicely too :(#also he's allergic to nuts so he's taking that as a death threat so now he's eating your pussy twice as crazy#side note: reader is devastated cuz she didn't think of food allergies#simon ghost riley x reader#x f!reader

if you, a person working with foods, tamper with someone’s food or knowingly mislabel food or serve food that you KNOW has allergens in it that you don’t disclose, you should get charged with attempted murder.
and if someone with allergies dies from going into shock after consuming it you should get charged with 2nd degree murder and go straight to fucking jail
allergies and intolerances aren’t a “haha funny lil stupid trend!!!” people with colitis and celiac disease can literally DEVELOP CANCER from consuming trigger foods. people with severe food allergies REGULARLY FUCKING DIE FROM ANAPHYLAXIS ACROSS THE COUNTRY from mislabeled and mis-advertised foods.
the only “joke” here is the fact so many people are allowed to put others lives in danger because they’re fucking lazy or incompetent or uneducated or think everyone with allergies is just being “picky” or “difficult”
If you can’t handle the responsibility of not feeding people allergens that can kill them, quit your fucking job. you don’t belong around ANYONES food.

Eyeing the ingredients on a pack of Percy Pigs and wondering if it’d be worth risking it...
Like most of the ingredients are low histamine (except the massive amounts of citric acid), I might be fine with it... Maybe...
(for context: these are my favorite candies. I ate them all the time back home before developing full-blown MCAS. I miss them.)
Maybe I’ll wait until I get me new epi pens. Just in case.

Ik I've made a post about it before but hospitals don't always have the ability to cater to life or death food allergies and are often not up front about this when admitting patients.
Yesterday I had to take my roomate to the hospital. He is allergic to soy, dairy, most tree nuts, several fruits, and he has severe celiacs, so no gluten whatsoever.
Little backstory, we are both disabled, and I am his advocate in situations like these, generally I am his caregiver, though I'd say it goes both ways.
So he is being pushed to accept hospitalization, and I am agreeing until I ask about food. The nurse says "it's a hospital, why wouldn't we be able to accomidate"
I am more direct, and say "many hospitals can't, I don't mind walking to the cafeteria to confirm." She seems to get frustrated but says she will call them and leaves after belittling me for having her check.
When she returns I'm told "they cannot guarantee any of the foods we have will be allergen free, but nothing in life is 100%"
My roomate came to the hospital because he was bleeding from ulcers caused by accidentally getting a single speck of grain alcohol based hand sanitizer on his tounge.
Td;lr hospitals don't always provide for allergens, and when I brought this up in a hospital with a nurse, I was basically told the patient should just eat allergens

Sometimes I feel like celiac disease doesn't actually count as a disability since it's so easy and stress free compared to deadly allergies, but then I remember that I have to meticulously plan every trip I go to and play 4D chess with uni campus restaurant menus and for a brief moment there was genuine consideration if I should be put on growth hormones because I was so small from not getting enough nutrients
#...but then again its so easy. its no deadly nut allergy or diabetes#but then again i cant go to some countries?????#but then again i dont even have to take like medication and im not in pain constantly#but then again i was so pale and small before they found my celiac. there was no growth in my body and i shouldve been taller#but i wont DIE if i ingest gluten#but i would have a landslide's amount of other symptoms if i did ingest gluten regularly to this day#but its really just a stomach ache its nothing#but the food is more expensive and that really adds up in the long run when theres no welfare for celiac from the government#but its so accessible nowadays its like theres no issue at all#but... i have been told people feel sorry for me#but its so easy! it doesnt really count.#not fish#complicated thoughts about a lifelong autoimmune disorder is all

heads up every time a product package changes it means they probably also changed the ingredients!
check for allergens, examine the nutrition label, especially if you need to track macros for health reasons. look at that sodium increase! (old on the left, new on the right)
plz reblog for those with allergies/sensitivities, or just those with picky eating and/or sensory issues.
#food allergies#picky eater#this is one of like 10 foods my child actually likes so i'm relieved it at least tastes about the same

I sometimes wonder what the overlap is between people who describe ketchup as "spicy" and people with undiagnosed tomato allergies.
