BOOK REVIEW: The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde
★★★★★ - 5 stars
"Come, I tell you. You have chattered enough about corruption. Now you shall look on it face to face."
Tumblr media
Vanity can destroy the natural beauty of the world. It can also destroy a man’s life. When Dorian Gray has a painting of him made, it turns his life on its head. With every wicked deed he commits, the painting becomes slowly more and more ugly, and yet he stays young and beautiful. When presented with the opportunity, what lengths would you go to stay young and beautiful for eternity? This is Dorian Gray’s story and let me forewarn you the acts he commits are far from beautiful.
Oscar Wilde once said, "I can resist anything but temptation" and that sums up the title character of the novel: Dorian. Dorian starts out as a young man who sees the world in beauty, but his ideologies are tainted by that of Lord Henry Wotton, who, if taking the novel in a religious perspective, may represent the Devil. Overall, The Picture of Dorian Gray teaches us that temptation and vanity can ruin the true beauty found within humanity. With a twisted murder and a practically psychopathic protagonist, the reader begins to question why we hold the idea of beauty so dearly in the eyes of society.
The characters are incredibly unique and also completely un-likable at the same time. Dorian is incredibly narcissistic, naive, and wholly tainted by the concept of hedonism; Basil is infatuated with Dorian, and more often than not heavily controlling over him as a result; and Lord Henry, otherwise referred to as "Harry", is a selfish, witty, manipulative, portentous man. Wilde, himself, once summed up his characters when comparing them to his own, real-life character: "Basil Hallward is what I think I am; Lord Henry, what the world thinks me; Dorian is what I would like to be - in other ages, perhaps".
Within this wonderous novel, are numerous Wilde-isms, including what is quite possibly his most famous ever to exist: "To define is to limit". This simple line teaches readers about conformity - if one is to put themselves into a box, they merely restrict themselves to labels and ideas created by society; we are human beings - it is simple as that, and to put ourselves into boxes that are in reality societally created constructs, all we do is limit ourselves.
Holding an average rating of 4.11 on Goodreads, The Picture of Dorian Gray is an excellent tale of the lengths a man goes to for the preservation of his youthful looks. Exploring the concept of hedonism that Oscar Wilde adored dearly, and littered with theological questions, the Picture of Dorian Gray takes its readers on an important journey of self.

Tag Directory
☆ spicy - block this tag if you don't want to see the porn i reblog. or here it is for reference! pick your poison 💕
★ i tag fic i've written for girl characters as writing for my wives and for male characters as writing for the boys (tumblr glitches so that not every post shows up in the tags but it does work as a block tag)
☆ tsuki speaks - personal posts, ramble tag, etc.
★ tsuki answers - all inbox messages and replies
☆ blog psa - posts i've made with signifcant announcements, disclaimers, or elaborations on rules.
★ trnt annie - anything having to do with my fic "The Road Not Taken," including updates and my own ramblings, plus all asks i receive about the fic.
☆ cottagecanon - anything having to do with the so-called "cinematic universe" of Annie fics centering around the same reader
i'll generally tag interactions with specific people or mutuals with their preferred name/screen name! this includes anons.
i play favorites, and i have special tags for them. generally i'll use this tag everything for i post or reblog about said characters, in addition to asks i've answered pertaining to them or posts that remind of them. so far we got: annie-isms, yelena brainrot, and kazutora (so creative amiright)
if we are mutuals, i would SUPER appreciate it if you could tag anything you post about ar/u/ani so i can block it. same about ar/min x reader content. of course do and write whatever you like, i just would really prefer not to see it. if tags are used appropriately then tumblr will filter it out and we can avoid the topic! which i absolutely love. live and let live, yknow?
★ over the years i have reblogged a LOT of art, so i'm going to include links to ships and/or group tags i've used for self-organization that might be of interest to anybody who's got taste 😉 (some of it is from ancient dinosaur times so check the date before u judge me too hard) organized alphabetically and not by how much i like them
all shifters | annie + bert + reiner | eren + mikasa + armin | survey corps vets | warriors
ereani | eremin | eruhan | eruri | jeanmarco | levihan | mikannie | miksasha | pieckan | pikuhan | pikulena | pokupiku | reibert | yumikuri

May 2019 Wrap-up
Tumblr media
TOTAL BOOKS READ: 9
The Swan Riders by Erin Bow [audio] ★★★★☆ The Dire King by William Ritter [ebook] ★★★★★ Flamecaster by Cinda Williams Chima [audio] ★★★★☆ Shadowcaster by Cinda Williams Chima [audio] ★★★★★ Stormcaster by Cinda Williams Chima [audio] ★★★★★ Deathcaster by Cinda Williams Chima [ebook] ★★★★☆ Toil & Trouble ed by Jessica Spotswood & Tess Sharpe [ebook] ★★★★☆ Her Body & Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado [ebook] ★★☆☆☆ Shaman’s Crossing by Robin Hobb [audio] ★★★★☆
Fewer books this month than usual, but the Shattered Realms series was very emotionally taxing so I forgive myself, and I’ll catch up on my reading challenge soon with something more fun and lighthearted!
THOUGHTS ABOUT: MAY 2019 READS
TOP PICK: The Shattered Realms series by Cinda Williams Chima. I was somewhat reluctant to name this as my top pick (I reaaallly need to write up an actual review), but in short: overall a good high fantasy series, 4-4.5 stars. but as a sequel series... “hate” is probably far too strong a word, but I can’t bring myself to fully support it. Reasons: day-long grieving session, random bouts of crying, having to mentally keep the two series separate so I wasn’t constantly crying. aagh. feel free to pester me for a full review if you want to know more, it’s not going to all fit here.
The Dire King/Jackaby series: this is the first time I got around to reading the last two books in the series, and ooooh boy. They were pretty good, I enjoyed them very much and that bittersweet ending had me crying. My favorite thing was getting to see the characters grow, especially Jackaby! He started out as not much more than a Sherlock sterotype, but he becomes so much more!!! He has feelings and emotions and learns to express them, and when he tells Abigail that he thinks she’ll be even better than him!!!!! If I had to voice one regret, it’s that the 3rd and 4th books don’t stand on their own as well as the first two - they don’t have their own self-contained mystery that adds to the overall one and instead are kind of just subsumed by it.
Toil & Trouble: wonderful, delightful, very very gay! I didn’t love everything, but that’s normal for anthologies. Would recommend if you’re looking for lady power and something less straight.
The Swan Riders: This was very different from The Scorpio Rules, but somehow better? That seems to be a fairly common opinion though, lol. Very interesting, but not something I think I’ll ever want to return to.
Shaman’s Crossing: so as I’m writing this, I’ve actually finished this series and I have MANY THOUGHTS. I want to write a lot more, but yeah, that first third was weird af and hella slow (though I must also direct you to look at like the first 60% of Fool’s Assassin if that’s your only complaint). My main thought on finishing this was that it was like a weird Farseer/Protector of the Small mashup AU. But like, depressing. Every kind of -ism you can imagine. Rampant fat-phobia. Definitely more problematic things than her other books and need some discussion. It didn’t suck me in quite as much as any of the Fitz books, but I did generally enjoy it.
