Miyuki Kazuya Appreciation Post
In honor of his birthday this year, here's a little meta about Miyuki Kazuya's traits that I find most interesting (other than his beloved snark) throughout Act I. This is hardly everything, but I wanted to love on him a bit before the day is out!
Please forgive the fan-translated panels, but they're much more accessible for a quick post.
He's forgiving.
Miyuki forgives his father for not consistently emotionally or physically taking care of him. He may not even see it as something to forgive at all due to his family's circumstances.
He instantly forgives Chris for being a jerk to everyone after his injury, still wishing for him to make first string, and even wonders if he could have helped more.
Tumblr media
He gives Zono an olive branch in the game immediately after their fight in front of the team, never once blaming him for causing a scene, laying hands on him, or damaging morale.
He forgives Tanba for not working with him as the ace. After being snubbed repeatedly as the starting catcher, he's excited when Tanba asks for him to catch, and is the first to back up Tanba's ace speech to the coach directly before the injury happens.
Even as a kid, he doesn't seem to hold a grudge against or tattle on the guys who beat him up in junior high. He just greets them at practice the next day (cheekily) and remains focused on holding onto his position no matter what.
Tumblr media
He's (mostly) selfless.
Even though he can seem like a jerk about it, Miyuki gives up a ton of time to his pitchers even before he's captain. He doesn't mind being hated or misunderstood if it gets them the win, however he gets extremely frustrated with selfish people, notably Mei, Eijun re: Chris, and pitchers shaking off signs because they want to duel the batter one-on-one.
It's true that he's unabashedly ambitious when it comes to baseball. However, Miyuki dismisses internal wants that aren't for the good of the team, such as getting to play with Chris on the first string or worrying about his future health when Koshien is on the line. The only thing he truly refuses to give up is his position as catcher.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's a caretaker.
Miyuki's been a physical caretaker since he was a little kid feeding his dad and an emotional one for his Seido teammates. Sometimes it's in a 'tough love' way for the confident ones, and sometimes it's done in a more gentle way for the insecure ones.
Does he always express it appropriately? Definitely not. Is he a little shit when the stakes are low? Absolutely. But his thoughts and actions are usually trying to motivate or support others.
Miyuki feels personal responsibility for the success of his pitchers. He lets them blame him for failure. He feels guilty for failing to notice injuries or distress. He even shifts away from his naturally harsh communication style based on individual needs, such as with the less-aggressive Nori or when Eijun struggles with the yips and he's trying to find the right way to help.
Tumblr media
When Miyuki is named captain, he takes the team's success completely on his shoulders. He refuses to allow himself any moments of weakness as a batter, catcher, or playmaker because the team is counting on him, and redoubles his own training. He even seeks out advice from Tetsu to better handle his role when he realizes he doesn't have the perspective he needs to lead.
This is part of why he contradicts himself during the yips arc about whether he should focus on the team first or help Eijun to help the team. He's being forced to choose if he's going to take care of Seido as a captain or take care of his pitcher as a catcher, and he doesn't know how to balance those priorities yet.
At the end of it all, even when he's injured badly enough to be on the verge of collapse, Miyuki still nags the team to remember their ice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During his recovery, we see his caring nature a final time in the guilt he feels around Chris' injury. It's completely irrational. After all, Miyuki was brand new to the team when it happened and probably new to being a real teammate in general. Still, he wonders if he helped his already injured rival senpai enough. The fact he was openly friendly, supportive, and patient with Chris in his second year, even though Chris was short with him, wasn't enough in his mind because someone he cared about dearly suffered.
Tumblr media
He has abandonment issues.
Miyuki can't accept people he cares about, especially those he admires, leaving him. He expects himself to fix the situation if their relationship is threatened. If he can't fix it, his frustration can manifest as atypically childish anger for such an emotionally mature teenager.
Looking at his history, it's unsurprising.
Miyuki doesn't seem to have any junior high friends that have stuck with him into high school. It isn't that they're at odds, like Mochi's, but more like they were kids he just walked home with because his own dad couldn't make games.
His dad appears to be a hard-working widower who doesn't have time to be involved with his son. Miyuki respects rather than resents him for his dedication to his job despite having to raise himself in a lot of ways.
Once he reaches High School following Chris, his idol and should-have-been mentor first ignores him, then disappears due to his injury, then lashes out at him ("First string catcher") even into Miyuki's second year. Miyuki keeps seeking him out all the same.
Tumblr media
The only involved adult figures Miyuki seems to have in his life are Rei, who is one of the few people we see watch out for him from the beginning, and Coach Kataoka, who has been a quiet supporter since Miyuki was made a starter under horrific circumstances.
Given all of this, it's unsurprising that Miyuki has learned to verbally accept that people leave, but he can't do so emotionally. We see this over and over again:
Miyuki losing control over his emotions when Sawamura said Chris should just give up on baseball. He can stand Chris hating him or ignoring him, but having Chris disappear from his world awakens that primal fear and anger of being left behind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Miyuki telling the team that they have to win to keep Coach Kataoka. Other players mention it on occasion during the second half of Act I, but he is the first, last, and most consistent to demand they win so Kataoka can't leave. He even plays through a serious injury while internally citing the impending loss of Kataoka as why he has to.
Miyuki gets furious after Mei makes a stupid mistake, denying their match against each other. That petulant rage bleeds over into his conversation with the team afterward, causing him to nihilistically state that everyone moves on in the end, so there's no point in being friends. He instinctively tries (and fails) to protect himself from the pain of people leaving by never building bonds to begin with.
And after all this, when Zono comes at him, he doesn't really fight back. He lets Zono scream at him and listens even if he's stubborn about it in the moment. He seems to believe this as an acceptable consequence for his words like he did with his old bullies.
Tumblr media
He's resilient.
Although baseball comes easily to Miyuki, not much else in his life has, and it makes him roll with the punches. From his home situation, to what happens with Chris, to teammates who hate or bully him, to dealing with losses - he's still always looking forward.
It's what makes him a great player, and ultimately, a great captain.

It’s interesting how even before Inajitsu vs Teito match started, Miyuki was already looking for Sawamura in the bleachers at the corner of his eye.
We have got to understand that this was unusual behavior coming from Sawamura. I looked back at the previous episodes and noticed that Sawamura was always in the center of the main roster flock, and usually on Miyuki’s side.
example1, when the first years were introduced
Tumblr media
example2, in the canteen (he’s sitting directly across Miyuki here)
Tumblr media
example3, in the bleachers after Seido vs Kasuga-ichi match, while they were watching Ichidai vs Niogakusha
Tumblr media
Therefore Sawamura sitting far from the core of the team after Seido vs Ichidai was downright WEIRD by Sawamura and Seido standards.
Tumblr media
I know that Kuramochi kept implying that Sawamura was angry at the team for not being able to back him up with more runs.
However I think Sawamura wasn’t really angry at the team but he just wanted time for himself to reflect on what he learned about the Seido vs. Sankou match. Maybe he wanted to reflect on his frustration about the difference of the team and Kataoka’s treatment of him and Furuya as reliever and ace respectively.
This is why he let Haruichi and the rest of the main team go on ahead without him. It wouldn’t be too far off to say he wanted to avoid them for a bit.
I think though one of Sawamura’s  reasons for sitting far away was to be able to watch the match without Miyuki’s input.
If you recall, Miyuki had started explaining in-game strategy to Sawamura and Furuya while watching Ichidai vs Niogakusha match.
Tumblr media
Sawamura was impressed by how Miyuki could predict gameplay by watching a game. He wanted to try doing it on his own like how he got sanada’s cutter & shuuto, shunshin’s precision and narumiya’s changeup for himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because this is what Sawamura is really about. He never wallows in defeat for too long but he looks for concrete and practical ways to improve himself. While the rest of the team were still regretful, Sawamura was already one, two, ten steps ahead.
Tumblr media
He’s an inspiration to them all.

YOU GUYS
“I can’t just leave you alone”
First of all, to me this has always been the core of Miyuki -> Eijun and I love seeing it spelled out right there on the page. From the very start, Miyuki couldn’t help but get involved when he first laid eyes on this brassy, fearless, idealistic pitcher, and that was even before he found out just how interesting a pitcher Eijun was. Miyuki is no exception to Eijun’s gravitational pull.
Secondly, this line -- and the whole situation with Eijun’s nerves -- reminds me of the yips arc and all the meta I wrote about Miyuki because a lot of people thought he didn’t care about Eijun’s struggle. Miyuki always cared. But he was bad at recognizing and responding to that kind of insecurity in others, and he even thought it would be better for the team as a whole to cut their losses and move on, but despite the words that came out of his mouth he didn’t follow through with them. Instead, he enlisted Chris’s help specifically for Eijun’s sake, knowing that this was the best way to help and that he.himself wasn’t the right person for the job.
Afterward, we saw Miyuki become much more mindful, and make awkward efforts to reach out to and be open with others. At this point he’s actually pretty good at stepping in when needed. He’s become such a reliable, exemplary captain, and as I’ve been rewatching the anime I’ve been paying extra attention to his character development and having so many feelings about it lol.
As usual, Miyuki’s go-to method for motivating Eijun is riling him up. It’s their dynamic, not just in terms of their personalities but also in the way Eijun relentlessly pursues Miyuki’s acknowledgment. So Miyuki challenges him. Lately, Miyuki has also been voicing his compliments and sincerity more often, not that he’s often believed lol. But this --
Tumblr media
-- this feels like a preface to the acknowledgement Eijun craves. Not in the sense that I think Miyuki will give it right this moment (if he does, Eijun just won’t believe him again) -- for one thing, I don’t think it’s words Eijun wants. It’s something that will be proven on the field, in the moment, because this has never really been about Miyuki giving something so much as it’s about Eijun striving to meet and match Miyuki’s unshakable self-assurance and top-class skill.
And this confession is an opening, an invitation. It follows the “I can’t just leave you alone” line like a turning point. Yeah, Eijun still needs some guidance, but he’s come a long way with becoming independent and growing into his responsibility and that, too, took Miyuki by surprise, and motivated the hell out of him to boot.
I’m interested to see how Eijun reacts to Miyuki’s words... the delivery and meaning are different from the few times Miyuki has praised or encouraged Eijun. He’s admitting rather than giving, saying this at his own expense. I suspect it’ll have an impact on Eijun, though whether it helps or becomes more pressure I can’t quite say. He’s been interpreting supportive words as reason to keep pushing himself.
Eijun used to take praise too far because he was desperate, and now he’s more likely to think he hasn’t properly earned it, that he has to work even harder to be worthy.
The more Eijun has learned, the more aware he’s become of what he lacks. On one hand, it’s been a joy to see him strive to improve in ways he never would have considered a year ago. On the other hand, it’s natural that the pressure would keep piling up and honestly this is a very well-placed development and I love it. It’s not a single traumatic event he has to overcome, it’s the accumulated consequences of his rapid growth. You don’t get over that sort of thing so much as you learn to balance it. Eijun’s struggle with this speaks to his own maturity.
So no, this is not going to be a backslide into yips part 2. Eijun isn’t that brittle anymore. It will be hard and there will be a lesson to learn, but it will still be progress, and absolutely everyone is supporting Eijun.
Tumblr media
Oof, it’s so clear that Kataoka is just telling him to be the same as always, because he doesn’t have to prove he’s earned the ace number. It’s his and that’s no longer in question. But Eijun zeroes in on the part about doing his best because he’s been giving it 110% all the time, every time, since the beginning, and still feels like it’s not enough.
(I take issue sometimes with Kataoka’s decisions but the notebook exchanges have helped soften my attitude. The way he writes is so thoughtful and earnest!)
I’m curious about Chris’s message, too -- and the placement of it, right after Miyuki’s big panel. Again, will it add to the pressure or will Eijun take something else away from it?
...You know, I’m starting to think it will be Furuya who gets through to Eijun, and maybe with actions rather than words. Furuya understands what he’s feeling better than anyone right now.

Sawamura/Miyuki in Seido vs Inashiro
note. pls treat this as a liveview reaction hhaha
Sawamura took over Tanba who suddenly got a cramp at the bottom of the 7th inning. He striked out Narumiya only using moving fastballs to the inside.
Narumiya: “How does Kazuya lead pitchers like him anyway?”
Miyuki (to Sawamura): “Your job is not to pitch well but to pitch with energy.”
Sawamura’s moving fastballs were pretty dangerous because they flew wherever they wanted. Miyuki didn’t even know where they’ll go but he sure as hell could catch them. Those fastballs were even made more formidable by Sawamura’s weird pitching form which hid his arm so well. Moreoever, Since June, Miyuki have been drilling into him that he was only good for inside pitches because he still had no skill and he was brave and energetic enough to not be afraid of hitting anybody
If this was another baseball anime, Miyuki would have been chewed out by the coach for making plays that could hurt the opponent pitcher. But this is Daiya! If Narumiya dies, he dies!
Anyway, Top of 8th inning seido scored 3 runs led by Furuya, the next batters and then later Tetsu’s timely 2RBI.
Bottom of 8th Sawamura pitched inside course moving fastballs to Yamaoka. Furuya fielding error cause yamaoka to get on base. Miyuki asked for the Inside cutter to soyogi. This was the first time they show the cutter after Sawamura accidentally pitched it to Maki 2 days ago.
Tumblr media
The unexpected cutter led soyogi to hit a grounder leading to a double play. This outted Inashiro for the 8th inning.
Idk wtf Sawamura was on about but.. he practiced that cutter the whole afternoon the day before??? And Miyuki was deliberately hiding it as the money pitch that’s why they didn’t do it during the warm up.
Anyway Sawamura asked Miyuki what he thought about the Cutter he pitched because it felt good to him.
Tumblr media
Sawamura delivered that cutter very well causing Miyuki to give him a rare compliment.
Tumblr media
“He has guts. he throws well when it counts.”
Top of 9th narumiya focus heightened and didnt let seido score any more runs.
Bottom of 9th sawamura retook the mound. Yabe fouled a bunt and then hit a moving fastball. It was caught by Haruichi who quickly threw to first base thus getting Yabe outted.
Miyuki (during Carlos at-bat): “We don’t have the skills to pitch around the batter. Umpire will give us the count if he won’t try to dodge. Be aggressive!”
Carlos fought with fouls. One bad pitch that went almost to the middle led to ball being hit towards outfield. At least it was caught in Sakai’s glove, outting carlos. Yabe and Carlos both glared at Sawamura expressing their desire to win. This pressured Sawamura because he could not understand what drove them so far.
Situation was ideal for Seido. Seido was already leading 4-3. The count was 2 outs with no runners in base. Just one out away from the nationals.
I gotta commend Miyuki’s efforts so far. He had been using Sawamura’s limited repertoire as best and as aggressive as he could. Sawamura had only his moving fastballs, 4 seam fastball and cutter. He can hit the strikezone only if he used inside pitches. Both him and Sawamura were daring and courageous enough to battle with only these weapons. It got them this far, they could do it again.
Miyuki: “His control was a little weak (the course was weak) but his shoulders are relaxed and his pitch has power. We’ve got this.”
Tumblr media
Perhaps it was greed. Perhaps it was pressure. But at this moment Miyuki had grown confident that they could win doing what they usually did.  He had seen one bad pitch from Sawamura (the one Carlos was able to make contact with). Still Miyuki didn’t think too much on it and continued to staying at the home plate.
In Miyuki’s mind he kept thinking “Dont worry about your control. Relax your shoulders,” relying on that almost telepathic understanding between him and Sawamura. I don’t know why he was in such a rush that he just didn’t try to go to Sawamura and talk toremind him casually. Maybe they never worked that way as a battery. Either way, what happens will have a great impact on all of them.
Next batter was Shirakawa, who followed Carlos’s strategy of hunching over the plate to pressure the pitcher not to throw to the inside. Miyuki still choose to call for an inside pitch not seeing? not noticing Sawamura already straining.  (he didn’t really have a choice in not asking for an inside pitch either. Shirakawa was still a dangerous good batter.)
Miyuki: “Dont worry about your control. Relax your shoulders.”
Sawamura: “More control. I need to pitch further inside. I cant be overwhelmed. I cant run away here.”
Communication between them has long been broken once Sawamura became fixated on his control and pitching aggressively to the batter. Sawamura has always been emphatic and emotional. That was his strength but also his weakness. He had clearly been pressured by the batters and was rising to their challenge.
Tumblr media
We know what happened next. Sawamura misthrew because he responded to the overwhelming pressure.  He hit Shirakawa in the head, causing Shirakawa to fall down. What’s worse is that Shirakawa actually howled in victory when he stood up. That added even more to Sawamura’s trauma. This is where Sawamura deeply regretted his immense desire to pitch to the inside. Unfortunately the adrenaline was so strong that the feeling got etched into his body.
I used to think that it was OOC for Sawamura to have felt this way considering he had been practicing with Kanemaru . Surely he must have hit Kanemaru on the head once or twice while practicing inside pitches. Also Chris and Miyuki should have told Sawamura during the Pitcher 101 lessons that hit by pitches were fine. However,  after  looking over r/aceofthediamond I learned that the game and the opponents can really pressure the pitcher more than their own teammates ever could.
Sawamura being the emphatic pitcher that he was is the reason why he’s such a loose cannon on the mound and must be handled with care (which is what Miyuki failed to do in the heat of the situation).
The fielders then gathered around Sawamura to calm him down. But he kept apologizing for pitching to the inside and hitting someone’s head. He did not listen to anyone anymore. Miyuki then gave the signal to Kataoka to sub him out.
Tumblr media
I’m just disappointed on how fast Miyuki and the Coach gave up on Sawamura, But I understand that there was no reason to keep him either. There was no reason to expose Sawamura’s weakness any further. Despite the beanball, Seido still wanted him to as a future trump card.
Tumblr media
SHUT UP MIYUKI FKJKFJ.
Miyuki was aware that Sawamura responded wholeheartedly to his aggressiveness. That’s why he hit the batter right? Miyuki knew this but still he discarded Sawamura as a weapon because he can’t be used in the match anymore.
Tumblr media
This part just hurts because Miyuki blamed it on Sawamura being a first year and unused to high pressure situations. WELL IT’S TRUE BUT no one, not even the fielders tried to talk to Sawamura after Carlos’s at-bat EITHER. NO ONE ASKED FOR A TIMEOUT. They just let him be. The team’s faith in him made all of them careless. And it resulted in Sawamura being taken off the mound. Seido let Inashiro succeed in breaking down their pitcher.
Kawakami was then called for relief. Kawakami was ready but the momentum wasn’t on Seido anymore. He had to sub in the middle of that. He had to see his kouhai being forced off the mound. Not good for Kawakami. He fought so valiantly though. His control was still alright yet the batters were good at hitting/fouling him too.
I ALSO STILL NOTICED MIYUKI DID NOT COME UP TO TALK TO KAWAKAMI WHEN THE PITCHER WAS GETTING MORE STRESSED TOO.
JFC CATCHER GET A GRIP YOU;RE NOT THE ONLY ONE PRESSURED AAAArGH
ANYWAY WE KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. Harada hits off Kawakami and Inashiro scores 2 runs bringing the score to 5-4. Seido loses and Kawakami is the who’s held responsible for giving up the winning runs.
I still think about how the reporter described the situation like this:
Tumblr media
“The lack of the indisputable ace was perhaps what cost them the game in the end.”
Tumblr media
yeah blame sawamura lol WHY IS IT THAT THE PITCHERS WERE THE ONES BLAMED THE MOST.
Sawamura only came out at the 7th. He still had a lot of energy. Him retiring too soon was what made seido lose momentum.  Sawamura was supposed to close the sht out of vs. Inashiro. His inside cutter still surprised Inashiro and SAWAMURA COULD HAVE GOTTEN THAT OUT.  Miyuki’s hesitation caused all that.
I understand that the fielders don’t know/trust the pitchers quite well that’s why they don’t interfere with the battery much. But I have also learned that anyone in the infield could still ask for a timeout. Maybe the distance between the positions would make it hard for anyone to see the pitcher’s face either. Honestly idk what is it about Seido’s culture why they don’t do it much.
I’M JUST SAD THAT SAWAMURA GOT BLAMED FOR EVERYTHING T^T
Tumblr media
AFTER A NIGHT OF NO SLEEP AND BITING HIS NAILS, Miyuki finally realized that he was also part of the blame and his attitude during the match didn’t help Sawamura at all. Sawamura wasn’t the only one unused to the taste of “almost victory”, Miyuki was too and it reflected on the way he handled the pitchers during the Inashiro match. He was also affected by the immense pressure.
The anime actually showed Miyuki’s frustration better. He grit his teeth trying to revisit what he felt during the situation.
Miyuki knows that Sawamura pitching the beanball was what ultimately changed the game for them. There must have been ways where he could have overturned the situation when Kawakami relieved but he didn’t accomplish them in the end.
Tumblr media
Despite his talents and despite all his past success, Miyuki’s defeat in vs. Inashiro showed him that he still had more to improve. His job was not to control the pitchers but to work and talk with them as partners. That was something he really took for granted in S1. It eventually backfired on him splendidly in their most crucial match.
The playing field between pitchers and genius catcher was now equal. But Miyuki doesn’t realize that fully until the next few weeks with the captaincy being given to him, Kawakami becoming depressed and Sawamura getting the YIPS.

There’s even no guarantee that Furuya would have been better with Chris. Remember Furuya went to Seido because of Miyuki in the first place and he didn’t listen to Miyuki at all.
“Put the ball lower” - Gotta throw as hard as I can idgaf about placement
“Practice the grip for Forkball” - oops i forgot here is a splitter instead
“Hey come to the bullpen to practice” - imma sleep here in the shade
“Stop running too much with Sawamura” - *aura*
“Relax and pace yourself” - GOTTA THROW HARD AND FAST WITH ALL MY STRENGTH
“Keep yourself warm and do not cool down” - imma take a nap
Plus Chris has a reputation of being abandoned by the people he trains. Who’s to say if Furuya would have stayed?
