Jill Kargman of ‘Odd Mom Out’: ‘I Do Not Own One Pair of Jeans’

To know Jill Kargman is to unabashedly hero-worship her. The deeply unapologetic, piercingly funny writer/actress has her own aesthetic in everything she does. Yes, she’s part of Manhattan’s elite — a world she pokes fun at in her bitingly funny TV show Odd Mom Out — but she has her stilettos planted firmly on the sidewalk. Kargman took the subway to this interview, in a downpour, and arrived alone — no handlers or assistants or hangers-on. She knows who she is, and she owns it. “I don’t like pants. I like them on other people, just not on myself. I haven’t worn pants in 25 years,” she tells Yahoo Style. “I wear these Wolford satin tights every single day. I can be spread-eagle and no one sees anything because it’s totally opaque. I have casual skirts or fancy skirts. In the summer, I wear dresses. It’s cute and you throw it on and put on flats and you go. I do not own one pair of jeans.”
Her peers, says Kargman, are bewildered by the fact that she doesn’t have a single set of capris, not even for those faux-casual garden parties where pretty people mill around, sipping frosé. “Not even one white pair for summer. I don’t drink rosé. I’m not a summer person,” she says.

Why doesn’t she own pants, you might wonder? Kargman gives one of her signature, viscerally visual answers. “Pants make me feel like I have vagina claustrophobia. I can’t handle it. It’s like a chastity belt. I don’t feel comfortable in pants. Even as a kid, I felt like I had permanent camel-toe,” she says.
The mother of three — daughters Sadie and Ivy, and son Fletch, with ad guru Harry Kargman — also has no aspirations to be a cool mom.
“I never wear short skirts. I don’t want my daughter and I to dress alike. I don’t want people to think we’re sisters. That means she’s dressing inappropriately or I am. I’m not trying to be her best friend. I’m her mother. We have an amazing relationship. We don’t bicker,” she says.
Fashion has a key role in Kargman’s hit Bravo series, Odd Mom Out. Kargman’s Jill Weber — a faux version of Kargman, is a New Yorker clinging to her individuality while dealing with the posh mommy set. Weber winds up living with her mother-in-law after difficult economic times, the result of a Bernie Madoff-style Ponzi scheme, hit the 1 percent.
“This season is our best yet by far,” Kargman says. “The network has given me more freedom. Season 3 is the balsamic reduction version of myself and it’s way funnier. The cold open is all these rich people having to make choices and they’re in distress. They have this financial setback. One person is having to choose between the horse farm or the chalet.”
Kargman created the show, and says she and her on-screen persona share surface similarities. “My character is more me when I was 28 and gave more of a s*** what people thought of me. Now, I do not care,” she says. “When you’re a new mom and you feel vulnerable and judged, you become insecure.”
What’s the one thing that the Jill Weber and Jill Kargman do share? A wardrobe.
“It’s all my clothes. Still the case. I started collecting harnesses last year. I thought the aesthetic was cool. I’m not into bondage but I love the look of it. So I started buying these things and I wear them over a white J. Crew shirt. I wear a ton of harnesses this year. I wear it in layers over a black dress. I just felt like I was evolving. I love the dichotomy of naughty and nice — a lace dress with a leather harness,” she says.
The daughter of former Chanel head Arie Kopelman (and sister-in-law of Drew Barrymore) was born and raised in New York, but was never a cosseted, spoiled brat like those you see on her show.
“I didn’t just get stuff. I had to earn it. Or it was my birthday. I would never want my children to have this insatiable hunger for shopping or newness,” she says.
She’s always been an iconoclast, staying true to her own edgy, often-austere style.
“I don’t show my skin. It’s not my thing. I’m personally not comfortable with my boobs out. I just don’t feel relaxed. I dress for myself, not men or women,” she says.
And neither is she a fan of plastic surgery. Like her mother, Coco Kopelman — who has one of the cutest Instagrams on social media, BTW — Kargman aims to age gracefully.
“I don’t have a secret. My secret, I guess, is that I drink a shit-ton of water. I have so many wrinkles. I’m not trying to look 33. It’s their turn to be 33. I’m happy to be 43,” she says. “My mother is 65 and she’s beautiful. She’s so pretty and she does nothing.”

Mengenai hal yang terkait film favorit bagi saya bukan perkara mudah untuk memilih, karena keterbatasan saya dalam menanggapi atau mengetahui aspek-aspek film yang bagus itu seperti apa. Namun kali ini saya akan mencoba me-revirew salah satu film yang cukup membuat saya larut dalam tensi dan emosi yang dibangun secara intens di film ini.Tetapi disisi lain dari powerful-nya film ini, saya menyadari bahwa manusia adalah makhluk hidup yang punya keterbatasan namun manusia juga adalah makhluk hidup yang sanggup melampaui keterbatasan tersebut.

“Whiplash” merupakan film indepeneden Amerika Serikat yang ditulis dan disutradarai oleh Damien Chazelle. Film yang dirilis pada tahun 2014 ini cukup banyak menuai banyak perstasi yang bagus. Hal ini tentunya tak lepas dari kualitas film itu sendiri dan juga duet dari sang tokoh utama Andrew Neiman yang dipernakan oleh Milles Teller dengan tokoh pembantu Terrence Fletcher yang diperankan J.K Simmons.
Pada dasarnya film ini menceritakan kisah perjuangan dan kontradiksi antara seorang drummer muda dan seorang guru musik dalam suatu grup musik. Sekilas cerita, Andrew Neiman adalah seorang drummer jazz dan murid tahun pertama di Shaffer Conservatory, sekolah musik yang ternama di Amerika. Mula-mula ambisinya untuk menjadi drummer terbaik terbuka lebar saat ia masuk di grup musik inti yang dibimbing Terrence Fletcher. Namun hal tersebut harus dibayar dengan cacian, pelecehan verbal, kemarahan, dan kekerasan fisik tak langsung yang merupakan metode pengajaran dari guru Terrence Fletcher yang mendorong Andrew Neimen dan murid yang ada di grup tersebut agar keluar dari batasanya.
Yang menarik dari “Whiplash” bagi saya adalah penuturan intensitas tensi cerita yang powerful dan ending yang antiklimaks yang berkualitas. Sifat dari guru Fletcher yang sadis, disiplin dan tidak kompromi merupakan poin penting yang menguasai jalannya suasana cerita, sensasi ketegangan psikologis yang kuat tersebut berhasil diperankan dengan apik oleh J.K Simmons.Tak hanya itu, Pemilihan soundtrack yang tepat dan pembawaan instrumen drum yang keren menjadikan poin tambahan untuk aspek penampilan musikalnya. Meskipun genre musik jazz yang tidak notabene tidak terlalu familiar, namun hal tersebut bisa memberikan hiburan spesial tersendiri bagi saya. Poin yang bagus lainnya adalah adanya tambahan unsur dramatisasi seperti tangan Andrew yang berdarah saat drumming memberikan pesan tersendiri betapa besarnya obsesi dan tekad seseorang dalam menjalani bidangnya.
Mungkin beberapa hal diatas adalah aspek dari film ini yang menarik bagi saya. Disamping itu untuk segi pengambilan shot kamera, gradasi warna dan aspek-aspek visual di film berhasil disajikan dengan baik. Meskipun alur cerita tergolong simpel, namun tetap bisa dinikmati. Tetapi ada satu plot yang saya rasa agak mengganjal yaitu hubungan antara Andrew Neimen dan pacarnya yang saya rasa tidak begitu berpengaruh dalam perkembangan cerita.
Sebagai film yang berhasil menyabet 3 oscar dan 88 penghargaan lainnya, tentunya film ini seharusnya tak luput dari list film yang wajib ditonton. Mungkin sedikit kelemahan dari film ini adalah premis cerita yang bisa dibilang simpel jika dilihat dari permukaan dan juga genre musik jazz yang tidak terlalu familiar di telinga sebagian besar orang. Namun semua itu bisa dipatahakan saat menonton keseluruhan dari film ini. Meskipun genrenya musik, namun saya pastikan bahwa film ini mungkin tidak seperti yang dibayangkan.
Saya pribadi cukup puas dengan segala aspek dari film “Whiplash”, overall film ini saya beri rating 4.8/5. Film ini tetap menjadi salah satu film yang patut direkomendasikan dan juga sebuah karya film yang masterpiece bagi saya.

Five seasons in, Steven Universe is a full-on TV nerd obsession. It has a devoted fandom, it's been nominated for the Outstanding Short Form Animation Emmy the past three years running, and the finale of its recent Steven Bomb (a set of episodes aired daily over at least a week) was one of cable's highest-rated episodes the night it aired. Yet, as an animated series of 11-minute shows centered on a young teen and his adventures with his super-powered alien family and friends, it's often dismissed by those unfamiliar as a run-of-the-mill kids' show and still struggles to break through with mainstream critics and audiences.
Steven Universe is an absolutely beautiful series. It has gorgeous animation, moving themes and writing, lovely voice work and music, and exciting action set-pieces. It tells the story of Steven Universe, a half-human, half-Gem (read: alien) boy growing up in Beach City with his father, his adoptive aunts (also Gems), and his friends. Steven and his aunts, the Crystal Gems, defend the Earth from invaders and work to unravel and recover from the trauma of a great gem rebellion that Steven's mother, Rose Quartz, led against the oppressive Great Diamond Authority. They also head down to the arcade, go on road trips, and play with Steven's pet lion.
The show has something for everyone, but with 152 episodes already in the bank, the notion of diving in can be daunting, particularly considering its dense mythology. If you're still on the fence, here are episodes sure to pique the interest of even the most skeptical viewer.

What you need to know: Nothing. This is another pure standalone episode.
Why it's great: The son of a rock musician and a natural ham, Steven has no trouble in the limelight, but this episode focuses instead on Sadie, Steven's friend from the local donut shop. “Sadie's Song” begins as a familiar “Let's put on a show!” narrative, but it turns partway through, exploring identity, anxiety, and acceptance. The individual connection each person shares to music and performance runs through the episode, as does the weight of expectation and the ability of people to either find or lose themselves on stage. The episode culminates in a terrific performance of Sadie's titular song, “Haven't You Noticed That I'm a Star,” a creative solution to the episode's central tension and a worthy interpretation of a catchy, fun tune.
