They've also regularly been shown to be the strongest species on the planet, and those like G are so, so proud of it. In fact, more frequently than not, they're shown to be super protective murder machines
So… Why would they not want to thrive? To be a surviving species? A species that strong, with a handful of members of it THAT full of themselves, should absolutely be trying to populate. If anything there should be WAY TOO MANY of them.
As I've also pointed out, apparently Dittos just… aren't real. Dittos, in case you haven't seen, heard of, or tried it, can breed with and have eggs with almost every single Pokemon, regardless of gender/sex. Not including the obvious picks like Legendaries and maybe a few others. That right there is a simple, 5 letter word that completely ruins the endangerment thing. Get like one or more Gardevoirs/Gallades and one Ditto into a daycare and there we go, goodbye extinction! Stupid.
I'll play Orchard's Advocate here, perhaps they REALLY don't actually exist because according to some theories, Ditto is a failed mew clone, so here they never conducted those experiments... so why on earth does Mewtwo exist? Mewtwo has actually shown up a couple times in Madhouse. Sure not relating to the story, but it IS real. And Dittos are totally hinted towards being real (ginger i believe in some post had their pokesona have ditto as a partner and lily on the fanart page or wherever reblogged it and tagged it 'Madhouse' or something) so WHERE THE FUCK ARE THEY??? I can't even say "well maybe they don't" entirely, because why and how wouldn't they?
Holy fuck, lemme bitch about that stupid fuck ass Cloning Machine copout. What a miserable way to back out of a story detail you clearly did not care to try and write for. A cloning machine. We literally dupe-glitch the Green Cunt(tm) to repopulate the Earth with the Ralts line. Be serious. According to the result of the one test, it was actually a fuck up, not because Bonnie was half-human, it's because she's half Gardevoir. Like, fully evolved horn-in-the-chest Gardevoir. I GUESS Ralts isn't explicitly the BABY version of Gardevoir, but a freshly-hatched Gardevoir Egg doesn't give you a Gardevoir, it gives you a Ralts.
Adding that little endangered tidbit to try to worldbuild, when you don't know how to worldbuild and don't even entirely like it, kinda shows that you suck major balls at worldbuilding and shouldn't even bother, especially if you do it so bad the story is unironically WORSE.
90% of Madhouse is literally null and void when you think any harder about Pokemon's worldbuilding, the world that Madhouse is BASED ON. You literally have the blueprints, did you fucking trip over the bag and get it run over by a bus to fuck up the bag THAT HARD??
Things that don't make sense in poke-madhouse part 1?
So... I haven't posted on this site in a hot minute. (college be damned) So I'm making up for that now. I might make post like these where I rant and rave about poke-madhouse and how bullshit the plot points are. As well as dunking on Lily. So if you're interested in this please let me know. Anyways one thing of that I've noticed that has always kinda aggravated me about poke-madhouse; is that Lily claims that the gardevoir line is an endangered pokemon and the rarest. When other pokemon exist and fit the bill better than gardevior ever could. Pokemon such as Deino and Lapras. Lapras because back in the red and blue entries it makes note of how they was an endangered species. And even in sun and moon it mentions on how it was near extinction, but because of protective regulations there's been an overpopulation.
And Deino because the thing's blind and it's dex entries makes note on how it'll ram and bit into anything. Causing it to have multiple wounds and bruises. You could easily spin that into Deino's falling off cliffs, eating poisonous berries, or just dying because it encountered a strong pokemon.
But no the most endangered species in pokemon was the psychic type that can sense a person's intentions, could teleport, and also doesn't have any disabilities to hinder it's survival.

when I say I wanna be the best there ever was. I meant it. Long post warning... tl;dr local man takes "perfect Pokemon" idea too far and spends several weeks learning to RNG manipulate his DS and plays the same DS game start to finish a few times in a single month
after my fateful full odds encounter with Rufus, the shiny wooper, I decided that I must have a shiny of every single Pokemon I love. Which I think is a well adjusted response. But the more time I spent breeding oddishes with the foreign ditto I realized that it would honestly be a true shame if I finally got a shiny and it had imperfect IVs! Or nature!
Turns out that the caliber of pokemon that would satisfy my need for perfection only show up for a few dozen moments in a given decade, and so I learned about RNG manipulation! Thanks to the in depth guide on Smogon I found a whole new way to waste hours for tiny incremental improvements!!
So. The perfect Pokemon. I start at the Smogon competitive guide and find which stats to match so I can find the seed in RNG reporter. For a Pokemon to be shiny it must satisfy a condition including the original trainer ID/secret ID (SID), so with a given save you only have access to a tiny subset of all possible IVs that are shiny.
Usually you can get around this by breeding, when IVs are assigned separately. You can hit one seed for the shiny PID with the correct nature, generate an egg, save, hit another seed, and then collect the perfect Pokemon!
This only doesn't work if:
1. Your pokemon is legendary/event only/gift only or
2. You have a preference on what ball it's captured in, or the original location, or for some reason the trainer ID (which can grant renaming rights pokemon with OTs that match) or maybe other things I haven't thought of?
Since perfect means perfect, I'm obviously in the both of those groups. The perfect oddish deserves a luxury ball, and would only be right to encounter in Ilex Forest. So! I need a new TID. I create a new ss save (may as well to complement my hg main save) with perfect timing at the very beginning to get the right TID. Several hours later I'd bred a shiny Absol and trained it to know mean look, false swipe, and thunder wave. Its IVs were random but still had good IVs from the perfect ditto. Only the best to capture the perfect Pokemon.
So then I was SO ready to go get the oddish, who I had already mentally named KIWI, only to find out I need a Synchronize lead (fortunately I had a ralts in my main save that was modest), two chatots to advance frames, and fittingly another oddish to attract it with sweet scent. After getting THOSE, I went to Ilex Forest in front of the shrine, sang like a hundred times with my chatots, and summoned. The motherfuckin kiwi.
Tumblr media
And here he is!!!! 31/31/31/31/31/31!
Inspired and motivated by my victory, I finally beat the game (still hadn't best Kanto), bred and trained a perfect Garchomp (PUFF, M.D., which stands for magic dragon), and the perfect Dragonite to give an egg move to the perfect Garchomp. THEN it being the Christmas season and all I decided to do the same for @spookclimber who got me back into Pokemon in the first place. Their unsuccessful (😥) Rayquaza grind inspired my initial shiny hunting, though they eventually made the hard decision the progress in their emerald save.
I had my TID/SID for the Modest KIWI, but the perfect Rayquaza is Adamant. So! New save! New TID! A spreadsheet!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Green squares reach represent a possible save where you could encounter a perfect legendary of either nature it intersects. Blue is perfect special attacker; below 31 ATK in order to get the correct nature. I didn't check my work, but I think it's the same for below 31 Sp. Atk, like the Adamant Rayquaza. I guess 31/31/31/31/31/31 pokemon can only be Timid, Modest, Docile or Calm?
Yellow is useless because why not get two potential natures, and the black/white areas are mirrors of each other.
That informed the next bit. I compiled all the legendaries in plat/hgss and got what natures Smogon recommended, then consolidated them into 3 games with two natures each that only misses 3 pokemon for perfect (potentially, I only am trying to perfect things I want on my team).
So it was settled. The perfect Rayquaza was to be found in soulsilver so that it could have a twin perfect Groudon (who will set up for KIWI). So no problem right? Just reset, time the beginning, beat the game, beat the e4 again, beat red, talk to mr. pokemon, go catch (and time) Groudon, boot up hg, go catch Kyogre (perfect kyogre is later in the plan), trade that to ss, go show Kyogre and Groudon to professor oak, go BACK to the embedded tower, and time Rayquaza!
And so it came to pass that my longest and most satisfying hunt was completed.
Presenting the spook's well timed all natural perfect Pokemon certificate of authenticity for the god of all Rayquazas:

Game time is 19 hours in. Can't wait to trade him!

Pokemon: A New Journey (2/2)
Synopsis: After traveling through every region with your best friend, Taeyong, it was time to settle down back in your hometown with your Pokemon for a new, relaxing journey. Member: Doyoung/Reader Word Count: 13,381 Notes: PaRT 2 of this long ass pokemon au. hopefully you enjoy it ;; read the other half of this collab here by @taeyongtime it’s hella good ;))) enjoy :D
Part 1 Part 2
Tumblr media
The next morning brings problems, just as the previous morning had. You wake up to someone yelling downstairs, waking you up from your sleep before your alarm was even supposed to go off. You try to block out their yelling with your Ditto pillow, but it doesn’t help at all and even Squirtle starts complaining.
That was your cue to get up. You trudge out of your bed, out of your room, and down the stairs until you’re bumping into someone. They don’t say sorry or anything, instead grabbing you by the shoulders and shaking you.
“Have you seen my sister?!” They ask. You blink up at them, only to realize it’s Doyoung who has been yelling. He looks absolutely worried, as if maybe his sister ran away or fell into a Diglett hole. You groan, grabbing his shoulders and shaking him back.
“Stop yelling it’s too early for this,” you tell him. He moves to let go of you, but you quickly grab his hands, tugging at them. “Doyoung, I bet she just went home. She clearly isn’t one for human interaction.”
Doyoung frowns, and opens his mouth to talk but you quickly interrupt him before he can freak out further. “Take a breath. Take maybe seven. Calm down before you get a Water Gun to the face.”
He does as you say, shutting up and breathing in and out a few times. On his second breath you breathe with him, smiling in encouragement. Being calm in the morning was very important, otherwise you would just start out your day stressed. Seeing as you had things to do, you really didn’t want to do that today.
“Okay, good job,” you say when Doyoung has finished his deep breaths. You squeeze his hands before repeating what you said earlier.
“I bet she went home, okay? If it’ll make you feel better, we can look around the farm together? Alright?” Doyoung takes another deep breath before nodding his head. You squeeze his hand once more before realizing that you were holding his hands and you quickly pull away.
“I’ll- I’ll meet you outside in five!” You push past him, back up the stairs and to your bedroom. You know your face is red, your hands coming to touch at your warm cheeks. You pull your hands away and look down at them, smiling a little.
Doyoung’s hands in yours felt great. They were hands you wouldn’t mind holding again and again. You giggle, covering your face in glee as you squeal.
Squirtle ends up getting so annoyed you get sprayed with Water Gun.
-
It’s nearly an hour and a half later, and Doyoung’s sister is nowhere to be found. You’re sitting on the porch together, waiting for Taeyong so you could go into town for the morning when he lets out a sigh. You look to Doyoung, raising your eyebrow at him.
“Sorry for causing so many problems…” Doyoung tells you. You snort, shaking your head.
“You’re not causing any problems, don’t worry,” you try. Doyoung sighs again.
“You don’t have to pretend, Y/N. I’ve made you worry about your Pokemon when they were on my farm… I made you worry about my sister and your Pokemon-
“Do you always get super down about yourself in situations like this?” You ask, laughing a little. You scoot closer to Doyoung, bumping shoulders with him.
“…It’s a habit. Sorry,” Doyoung admits. You bump shoulders with him again and pat his thigh as some form of comfort. It was the best you had right now besides your words.
“Habits are meant to be broken, Dodo. Can I call you Dodo? I’m going to call you Dodo.” Doyoung looks ready to protest but you quickly continue, not wanting him to interrupt. “If this is you causing problems though, then maybe you should cause more if we get to hang out so often...”
“Wha-
“Hey, sorry to make you wait,” Taeyong’s voice behind you says. You quickly stand up, smiling at him before stepping off the porch. You decide to be leader of the group, Taeyong and Doyoung’s Eevee coming to walk next to you as you go.
You lead the group down the road, humming a small tune you learned on your travels while you walk. On your way, the Eevee makes friends with a wild Bidoof, one who walks along with you. Doyoung practically coos at the thing, moving to walk next to you just to observe it.
“You really like Normal Types, huh?” You ask. Doyoung nods his head.
“I guess I got it from my dad. My sister doesn’t like them because of him but me...”
“You love them,” you say. Doyoung nods again. “Hehe. We all have our types. I like them too.”
Doyoung looks at you with surprise and you shrug, smiling wider. “All the super cute ones are Normal Types.”
You notice that small smile on his face again, the one that makes your heart flutter and you have to turn away. It was way too cute for you to be staring at for very long.
Your walk is silent the rest of the way, besides the noises Doyoung makes about Bidoof on your walk. You eventually come to the town entrance and head immediately to the Pokemon Center. The doors open for you and you step in, greeting Nurse Joy, who greets you back. She heads to the back to get your Pokemon right after and as you wait, the doors open again.
You look back to see Doyoung’s sister, surprised to see you all there. She quickly tries to backtrack, but Doyoung notices too quickly for her to get anywhere.
“HOLD IT.” Doyoung storms over to her, going into a full on rant about how irresponsible she was for disappearing so suddenly. His sister looks neutral about this, like she was used to this sort of nagging on the daily. It almost makes you laugh, but you decide it would be better not to laugh at this kind of situation. Doyoung seemed genuinely upset at his sister.
“Your Pokemon are ready!” Nurse Joy calls out then. You turn around, ready to grab at the Pokeballs until a pair of hands get to it first. You turn to see the culprit, only for them to rush out of the Pokemon Center at lightning speed. You turn to Taeyong, laughing awkwardly.
“She just… took our Pokemon?”
“I see that,” Taeyong responds. You both turn to Nurse Joy. She holds out two more Pokemon, bowing slightly.
“Please give these two to her.” Taeyong takes the two Pokeballs and your little group heads back outside, only to see your Pokemon standing out there with Doyoung’s sister. Seeing Empoleon makes you extremely happy and you rush over to her, wrapping your arms around her as best as you can.
“Empoleon!” Empoleon makes a noise to say hello back. Your greetings are cut short though when you hear Taeyong calling for Arcanine. You turn to look, Arcanine’s teeth bared at Doyoung’s sister. She still looks just as upset as she did the other day. You’re about to tell Empoleon to do something about it but Arcanine is quick, moving to pounce at Doyoung’s sister. She flinches but there’s no need, because one of the Pokeballs in Taeyong’s hands springs free at the same time, a blue light surrounding Arcanine’s body immediately. Your eyes widen at seeing the Pokemon, a beautiful green and white figure, eyes blue as she uses Psychic.
“A Gardevoir! How cool!” You exclaim, entranced by the beauty of it. Even though you had explored region after region and have seen plenty of Pokemon, even Legendary Pokemon, they still didn’t fail to amaze you. Pokemon were just so fricking cool.
“Release Arcanine,” Taeyong says. You watch as Gardevoir’s eyes turn from blue back to the original red, crossing its arms as it turns away from him to focus on her trainer. You watch in awe, not even bothering to pay attention to anything else that was happening. Gardevoir was so pretty. You’re almost positive that it’d win every possible Pokemon Contest there was just by its beauty alone.
You wonder if maybe Doyoung’s sister was breeding Ralts. You’d have to ask about it later. You shake yourself out of your infatuation with the Gardevoir and look to her trainer. She stares at Taeyong for a moment before looking to the ground, an emotion you can’t really describe crossing her face. Taeyong isn’t even looking at her, too busy with calming down Arcanine.
It was weird. Whatever was between them was clearly not good. Taeyong had been so into her just yesterday. Why was he acting weird now?
“You said you have our missing Pokemon?” You ask, wanting to break the awkward tension.
“Yes,” Doyoung’s sisters says. “Do you want to get them now?”
“No better time to get things done than the present time,” you say. Doyoung laughs and you smile hearing his laughter. It was such a good sound.
Doyoung’s sister returns her Gardevoir back to its Pokeball before gesturing for you to follow her back to the sibling’s farm. The walk is just as silent as your walk to town, and the awkward tension is back immediately. It bothers you, but there was nothing that could be done. You’re sure starting a conversation would only lead to Doyoung’s sister getting irritated or something.
So, you walk and walk in utter silence until you arrive at the farm. The house isn’t much different than the one you owned, a little farmhouse surrounded by a white picket fence. The color is different of course, but besides that, it’s practically the same. The real difference is the building next to the farmhouse. It’s a smaller building compared to the house but still pretty big for the farm. Doyoung’s sister leads you to it, gesturing to the front doors.
“In here.” She takes you inside, and you look around in awe at the place. It’s nothing of what you expected, the interior almost childish and something you’d see in a kid’s playroom. It hits you that this place was probably where they kept all the baby Pokemon. The Chansey that greets you at the front desk only confirms your suspicion, a few Happiny sitting on the counter with her.
“That’s so smart…” You mumble under your breath.
“I’ll go have Chansey bring them out,” Doyoung’s sister says, getting your attention once more. Doyoung is quick to get your attention on him though, and you notice he’s pulling on gloves and a hat.
“You have this under control, right?” He asks. “I need to tend to my own Pokemon.”
Your eyes widen at the opportunity and you slide up to Doyoung, smiling big at him. “Can I get a tour of your place?”
Doyoung tries to look like he’s the boss of this situation but you can see the smile trying to make its way on his face. He moves to fix his hat, nodding his head to distract you away from the defiant smile.
“Sure, but only if you’re willing to help me in my tasks,” he says. You nod your head eagerly.
“Of course!”
Doyoung gestures you to the door on the side of the counter, opening it up for you. You enter quickly after returning your Pokemon to their Pokeballs, not wanting to lose them on the farm. You practically forget about the Pokemon you were supposed to take home as well in favor of hanging out with Doyoung a little longer and seeing all his Pokemon. They were in good hands anyways.
-
“Wow, a Kangaskhan!” You stare in awe at the giant creature who comes over from the Tauros and Miltank pen at Doyoung’s command, sitting down in front of the food bowl Doyoung had provided. You watch as it feeds the small baby in its pouch, the baby calling to its mother in happiness.
You and Doyoung had walked out of their little daycare to the backyard where all the other Pokemon were, grazing and playing with each other as the day went on. You marvel at the backyard, the wide expanse of green stretching farther than your farm. It seems like the fence that contains everything goes on forever, the berry trees seeming so far away, and you almost can’t pull your eyes away for the Pokemon that was nuzzling your leg.
Almost.
“Buneary!” Your mouth widens at the brown Rabbit Pokemon below you. It was far more adorable than the Kangaskhan feeding its young, and you forget how amazing Doyoung’s farm is just with one look at the Pokemon. It had an ear curled down, and around that ear was a purple ribbon. It fit it so well and you smile down at it, only for it to smile back. You can’t help but coo at it, kneeling to pick it up in your arms. Buneary immediately nuzzles its face against yours and you squeal.
“Oh my god, you’re just the cutest, aren’t you?” You ask.
“Buneary!”
“…I asked you to help feed the Pokemon, not cuddle with them,” Doyoung speaks up. You look at him just in time to see him roll his eyes, but right after his soft smile finds its way on his face. He was enjoying this just as much as you were.
“Helping feed the Pokemon includes cuddling with them,” you reply. “Isn’t that right, Buneary?”
“Buneary!”
“See? Buneary agrees,” you say. “I’m sure all the other Pokemon would agree as well. Unless you never cuddle your Pokemon. Which is practically neglect.”
“Of course I do!” Doyoung snaps at your accusation. He walks over to you and takes Buneary from your hands, bringing it close to his face and nuzzling his nose against the top of its head. The entire exchange leaves you speechless, mostly because it was so absolutely adorable and because you can really see how much Doyoung cared for his Pokemon.
Seeing him like this only made you like him more and more.
“Hey, stop staring. Let’s get back to work,” Doyoung says, setting Buneary down. You smile at him, walking over to loop his arms with yours.
“You promised a tour. Show me around Doyoungie,” you say. Doyoung’s face flushes, but he doesn’t say anything against it, instead beginning to walk towards the Miltank and Tauros’ pens to start your tour.
-
Forty-five minutes later and you’re practically on cloud nine as you take one of the Skitty back to the daycare. Doyoung and you had a nice walk around the farm with him telling you everything there was to know about it and you hanging off his arm. Not once did he say anything against it, which only made you think maybe he enjoyed your walk as well. Afterwards, you finished up all your tasks, feeding the rest of the Pokemon, making sure they were all well, and then even going so far as to checking on the eggs.
Everything really was great at Doyoung’s farm, and with a promise of meeting next week to show you the clouds on his farm – because they were just “so beautiful” on his farm – you were headed home after completely this last task.
You open the back door to the daycare, stepping in and immediately noticing Doyoung’s sister on the floor, a Luxray by her side. You have to stop yourself from being impressed by the big feline, instead composing yourself in this moment.
“Oh, hey,” you say. She looks up at you, and then back down at the book in her hands. Not one for conversation, apparently. The Luxray next to her takes a seat by her feet, and you watch it sadly.
“Okay, don’t talk to me then.” You nod and lean against the wall, not wanting to leave yet. Even if Doyoung’s sister didn’t want to socialize with you, you weren’t going to just leave. You needed to get to the bottom of her.
And for Taeyong’s sake, you were going to get on her good side.
“Bulbasaur!” You look to the green Pokemon as it pulls its Espurr friend away from the tower of blocks they had been working on, the tower collapsing to the floor. The Espurr you’re sure belonged to Doyoung’s sister, but the Bulbasaur seemed oddly out of place…
“Are these ones all yours?” You ask, turning your attention back to Doyoung’s sister. She shuts her book, crosses her legs and looks up at you.
“Bulbasaur and Espurr, yes. Skitty, no.”
You cross your arms in triumph, grinning madly at her. “I knew Doyoung was lying when he said you were the one who bred them.”
She snorts and you feel like that’s a triumph too. Making her laugh was progress. “He always says that.”
“So you can hold a conversation,” you blurt out. It comes out wrong, a little harsher than you intended, and you quickly try and backtrack. “Sorry, that came out wrong.” You set the Skitty down, watching as it runs over to its friends. Your eyes are on Luxray again, and you watch it for a moment before opening your mouth again in hopes that your conversation wasn’t dead yet. “That Luxray yours too?”
“It’s not Doyoung’s,” she says simply.
You chuckle in response. The conversation wasn’t dead yet. “He told me you have a habit of picking up Pokemon that aren’t yours.”
“I found it lurking around our field when it was still a Shinx. No one claimed it so I claimed it. Raised it and trained it alongside my own,” she mumbles out. You take this as your chance to learn more about her Pokemon.
“May I see your Pokemon?” You ask politely. She eyes you warily and you shake your head. “Not for battling purposes. Just out of curiosity.”
She hesitates, but ends up agreeing. “Follow me then.”
She leads you out of the Playroom and into the lab, a place you had been in only half an hour ago to see the eggs. You’re only in there for a minute as she picks up some Pokeballs before you’re heading outside to another play area, a small playground where some more baby Pokemon were playing.
“You’ve already seen the ones inside, so here are the ones I…” You look at her, waiting in anticipation. “…some I used to battle with. Others I got when I settled on the farm.”
She releases all her Pokemon from their Pokeballs and you stare in amazement at all of them. You walk around, looking at them, getting permission to pet her Girafarig, being disappointed when her Abra won’t even let you touch it (even though it touched you first), bouncing around with her Smoochum and her Eevee, before your eyes land on her Gardevoir for the second time that day.
She doesn’t even spare one glance at you, moving over to stand beside Kadabra, who also doesn’t even bother paying attention to you. It’s disappointing, but they take after their trainer. That was obvious.
You stand there for a moment, Luxray coming over to say hello. You scratch at its ears as a hello back before looking at its trainer.
“You fit along with Psychic types,” you say. She frowns at you.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” You don’t want to tell her it means snooty or maybe even distant and aloof, so instead you just shrug.
“Just… It suits you.”
“Oh.” You’re sure she doesn’t believe it, but you weren’t going to say anything more lest she stop hanging out with you. You watch as she picks up her Smoochum, the baby placing a kiss on her face. “This one used to be Doyoung’s before he left home. I ended up taking care of it for him.”
A conversation topic you had with Doyoung earlier comes to mind and you quickly open your mouth to mention it. “I heard you were a trainer before coming here to join him on the farm.”
“Yes…” Doyoung’s sister nods. “I’m sure he told you about our father being the leader of Petalburg Gym.”
You nod your head back. “You can just battle with your current Pokemon, you know. You don’t have to constrain yourself with Normal Types.”
“That…” You watch as she returns her Pokemon to their Pokeballs and you frown. She really didn’t like talking about battling. “I don’t battle anymore.”
You have to stop yourself from rolling your eyes. She could say she didn’t battle all she wanted, but once a Pokemon trainer, always a Pokemon trainer. She was good at battling if the stories Doyoung told you was anything to go by, and, while forced by her father to battle, somewhere deep down you knew she and her Pokemon enjoyed it.
You were going to make her realize that.
“Doyoung said you were good at it. He told me you’d kick his ass all the time with your Psychic Pokemon,” you say.
“That’s because he doesn’t know how to battle.” You snort, shrugging.
“Then you must be better at it than him,” you say, a mischievous grin on your face. “He said you have a gift with battling but I have yet to see it when you’re so aloof.”
Her eyes narrow at you and you realize you got her in your grasps. She was easy. “Why don’t you say what you really want to say?”
“I want to see if you’re really as good as Doyoung says,” you say, grinning at her. “Let’s have a battle.”
-
You decide the rules on your battle with Doyoung’s sister once you reach the backyard, the Pokemon that might have been playing nearby settling down to watch from afar what they could probably sense was going to go down. You were going to enjoy winning this battle.
“One on one. First person to land three hits on the other’s Pokemon wins.”
Doyoung’s sister nods in agreement and you immediately throw out Blastoise’s Pokeball. Blastoise emerges and raises her cannons in excitement. You and her haven’t had a battle in a long while, so this was a good opportunity to get back into the swing of things.
“Your small turtle evolves into that big one?” Doyoung’s sister asks. You chuckle, nodding your head.
“Yes? You’ve never seen a Blastoise before?”
“No, but I’ve never seen a Poochyena before even though it’s from my hometown so fair enough.” You laugh again. This girl was just so… weird.
She takes out a Pokeball from her hoodie pocket before tossing it onto the field. Gardevoir pops out and you immediately squeal at seeing the beauty once more.
“I’m sorry, but your Gardevoir is just really pretty.”
Doyoung’s sister doesn’t comment, instead nodding at you. “You may have first move.”
You grin and immediately call out a Skull Bash command to Blastoise. Blastoise lowers her head and makes a dash for Gardevoir, but, just as you expected, it doesn’t even hit. Gardevoir dodges so easily, and each time Blastoise tries to hit, it misses.
And then, suddenly, a Shadow Ball nearly hits Blastoise, Blastoise barely managing to dodge the hit as it retreats into its shell and spins the opposite way of the attack. You watch at it whizzes past, flying through the air until it hits a fence post and burning a hole through part of the barbed wire.
Your eyes are wide and there’s a grin on your face as you turn back to the battle. “Wow, I didn’t see that coming,” you say in excitement. “I was expecting you to say a command but you just glanced at your Gardevoir and that was it!”
Your gushing doesn’t impress Doyoung’s sister and she just frowns. “Thank you?”
“Sure. Blastoise, follow up with Hydro Pump!” You call out. Blastoise does as you say, a powerful burst of water coming out of its cannons. It almost hits Gardevoir, but you notice Gardevoir’s eyes glowing light blue, and then the water that was coming at it glowing the same. You watch as the water’s trajectory changes, the Hydro Pump raining down on you only a second later. You get totally drenched, your clothes soaked to the core.
“That was one hit,” Doyoung’s sister says. You groan, rolling your eyes.
“Tell me about it! I’m soaked now!”
“Very sorry for the trouble, but here’s another one. Moonblast.” Blastoise and you don’t have enough time to react as a large energy orb of pink hits Blastoise directly, making her skid back. It doesn’t affect Blastoise much, its strong defense a little too much for an attack like that.
Even so, you know you can’t win normally. You were going to have to try something a little drastic.
And you knew just what to do.
“Your Gardevoir is strong. And you say you’re only a breeder?”
“I have half the badges of the Hoenn League,” she tells you. “Stopped after defeating my father so I could get his permission to leave home and come here.”
You grin, eyes widening in mock surprise. “Oh, Taeyong, did you hear that? She had half the badges from the Hoenn League.”
Doyoung’s sister turns around to see if Taeyong was really standing behind her, and there, you take your shot. At your command, Blastoise surges forward after tucking itself into its shell, spinning rapidly towards Gardevoir while using its Hydro Pump and hitting her once, twice, three times before coming back to stand in front of you. Doyoung’s sister turns around just in time to see her loss and she stares at you in disbelief.
“You… You cheated. You distracted me with Taeyong.” You grin and shrug. You knew that would work on her.
“A win’s a win. Not even Taeyong falls for that when I battle him,” you say. Doyoung’s sister just grumbles under her breath before admitting defeat, and you walk towards her, patting her on the back. “But really, you’re as good as Doyoung says you are. Just easily distracted.”
She doesn’t back away from you at the contact, instead looking you up and down once. “Hmm. Do you want a change of clothes or not?”
You nod your head furiously, and together, you head off to the lab once more.
-
After a trip to get new clothes and to see one of the few things that kept Doyoung’s farm running, the beautiful Pyroar pride, you and his sister arrive at the other money maker of their farm. A fence keeps the Ponyta and Rapidash she owns behind it, but they’re friendly enough that they let you pet them. You talk for a few moments while you watch them, marveling once again at their Pokemon.
Being around the world and meeting tons of Pokemon still weren’t enough apparently, because you were still so impressed seeing simple Pokemon like Ponyta and Rapidash.
You’re pretty sure your love and affection for Pokemon would never go away.
The Litleo Doyoung’s sister had let you carry around moments before climbs up your shoulders and wiggles at the Ponyta, making them neigh in return. You giggle at the action, already loving the small cub. You wonder if maybe she’d let you keep it.
“Oh, I meant to ask, do you breed Ralts?” You question. There was no hiding your love for the gorgeous Gardevoir, and having your own would only make you happy.
“No. Why?” You frown, moving the Litleo back into your arms. Maybe you’d have to look elsewhere for a Ralts… Or, if you became really good friends with Doyoung’s sister, you could convince her to breed you one…
You take that thought out of your mind, focusing back on the conversation. “I just wanted to ask since your Gardevoir is so pretty.”
“Only one Gardevoir and that’s my own. Besides the Ponyta and Litleo, I only have Espurr and the occasional Shinx when it comes to Pokemon breeding.”
“Shinx!” Your eyes light up at her words. If you had a Shinx, it would be perfect for the herd of Mareep you wanted to get. It could reign them in as a Luxio and even as a Luxray. It would be the perfect addition to your farm.
“I don’t really use Luxray for breeding,” she clarifies. Your dreams die immediately, and you look at the ground in disappointment. “It accompanies me and serves as a guard of the farm. Much like… Taeyong’s Arcanine.”
At the mention of your best friend, you perk up again, giving Doyoung’s sister a look. This was your chance to ask about their weird behavior from earlier!
“You and Taeyong wouldn’t even look at each other. What’s the deal?” You ask. She hesitates, looking away from you.
“Nothing.”
“It’s not nothing when he literally doesn’t shut up about you and keeps asking me to ask Doyoung about you!”
“Huh?” She tilts her head in confusion and you sigh. These two were just ridiculous.
“Do you like him? Do you like Taeyong?” She nods, looking away from you once more. Clearly, she was shy about this.
Just like Taeyong.
Ridiculous and perfect for each other.
“But I don’t think he likes me after I told him I didn’t care much for Pokemon Trainers,” she says. Your eyes widen in disbelief.
“You told him what?!” You yell. The one thing you’re sure Taeyong didn’t want to hear from the girl he liked was that she didn’t like Pokemon Trainers. Not liking battling was one thing, but not liking Pokemon Trainers? That was even worse. For half of his life, all Taeyong did was battle and win gym badges and challenge the Pokemon Leagues until he was champion. Being a Pokemon Trainer was something he lived for, and, the girl he liked didn’t like that?
No wonder they weren’t talking to each other.
After Doyoung’s sister repeats what she said, you facepalm, shaking your head.
Of course Taeyong fell for someone like this.
“What?”
“It really isn’t my story to tell,” you say. “Gosh, you think of him one way and he twists your perception of him into something else that’s just… not ideal and causes misunderstanding. You two are each going in opposite directions it’s really dumb, to be honest.”
She opens her mouth to say something, but you quickly continue on, not wanting any interruptions. She needed to stop being so stupid about this.
“Just know that Taeyong really likes you even though it seems like he doesn’t want to have anything to do with you. He’s not the best with confrontation so you have to bring it up first for him to open up, understand?”
She nods, and you know she clearly doesn’t understand, but you have to live with it. Eventually, they’d solve their stupid shit.
Hopefully.
“Good,” you say. “He’s just a sensitive baby who wants to love and be loved.”
Together, you stand there in silence for a few moments. You hope she was thinking over how to confront Taeyong, but, that was probably too much to expect from your new idiot friend.
Your mind wanders to her brother as you stand there. What if they were both like this? Did Doyoung know you liked him, or was he oblivious to your affections? Did he hate Pokemon Trainers too? That certainly wouldn’t bode well for you, that was for sure.
You open your mouth to ask about her brother, but she says something first. “May I ask you something?”
You nod your head, trying to focus on her and not her brother. You could do that later.
“Go for it.”
“So, I have a Kadabra.”
“Yes, I saw it standing next to your Gardevoir earlier,” you say. She looks fidgety as she speaks next, clearly not confident in what she was trying to ask.
“To further evolve my Kadabra, I… I need to trade it. But I don’t know anyone else besides my brother and…” She pauses for a second, a thought on her mind that she doesn’t want to say out loud. She quickly bounces back from it, focusing back on you. “I would… I would like to know if you’d like to trade… trade a Pokemon with me. For my Kadabra.”
Another silence falls over you. The thought of her trusting you enough with one of her Pokemon makes your heart swell and you think how this means you’re very much friends. She wouldn’t trade one of her favorite Pokemon with you if you weren’t friends.
It makes you happy thinking about it.
“Forget I said anything,” she says, bringing you back to the present. You really needed to stop spacing out when you were talking to her. “It was just a thought.”
“I’ll trade with you,” you say before she can think negatively of you once more. She perks up, and you smile at her. You were definitely friends now.
“We’re friends now,” you repeat out loud to her. “I’ll trade to help a friend out.”
She reaches into her hoodie pocket and pulls out a ball, handing it over to you. “For you.”
You reach for a Pokeball yourself, not even bothering to see which one it was. You’re pretty positive that your Pokemon would be coming back to you anyways. You doubt Doyoung’s sister could handle any of your Pokemon even if she tried.
“And for you,” you say, handing over your Pokeball. She takes it and quickly stuffs it in her hoodie. The Litleo in your arms lets out a yawn, and you move to hand it back to her. She shakes her head, telling you to keep it.
“A gift from a friend to a friend,” she says. You almost want to hug her, but, you’re pretty sure she won’t like that.
“Are you sure?” You ask one last time.
“If you don’t want it, then you can give it to Taeyong.”
You grin at her. That was a great idea, actually. You wouldn’t mind raising it even if Fire Type Pokemon weren’t really your thing, but giving it to Taeyong to raise was a much better thought. He was going to love the cub.
“I’ll give it to Taeyong. He’s going to love this little one to pieces, I just know it.”
“Speaking of Taeyong… you should probably get back to your farm,” she says. You nod your head, taking a step back away from the fence.
“You’re right. He’s probably playing with the babies, so I should go get him working. Thank you for the Litleo and I’ll make sure to take care of your Kadabra.” You take another step back, waving at her.
“See you later!”
She waves back, and you turn on your heel, taking your leave.
-
“Hey, Taeyong, how are Growlithe and Pip…lup…why do you look so glum?” You ask when you enter the living room, Taeyong laying on the couch with three Poochyena on his back. You’re sure you know the reason for his glumness, but, asking him was something you needed to do as a best friend.
“She hates Pokemon trainers,” he whines out. The Poochyena follow suit, all howling with him. You laugh a little awkwardly, moving over to sit in front of him on the floor. You figured he was whining about Doyoung’s sister and not working like he was supposed to be. He looks at you, a big frown on his face and you can’t even be bothered to scold him about it.
“She hates me.”
“She doesn’t hate you, Taeyong. She just… needs some… encouragement?” You try. Taeyong whines again, and once more, the Poochyena howl. “Taeyong, you were the Pokemon Champion for eight different regions. Are you seriously sitting here whining about a girl?”
“She’s the only girl I’ve ever liked, Y/N… Let me whine in peace.” Taeyong turns his head away from you, and you sigh, patting the back of his head before standing up. You had other matters to tend to, but, before you go, you speak up once more.
“The festival is coming up soon, Taeyong. Maybe there you two can, I don’t know. Talk it out? Buy her something nice and fix your problem. Otherwise… You’ll be mopey forever and that’s not good for the Pokemon. Do you want sad Pokemon all day, every day?”
Taeyong looks at you and shakes his head.
“Okay, then at the festival. Make up,” you step away from the couch, walking to the door. Remembering the gift Doyoung’s sister gave you, you turn back once more.
“By the way, she gave us a Litleo so if you’d like to see it…”
Taeyong sits up immediately, the Poochyena sliding down his back before he looks at you longingly. “She gave us a Litleo?”
“Yep.”
“…I’ll be out in a minute, then.”
“No mopey Taeyong though.”
He nods, putting on a smile. “No mopey Taeyong.”
You continue on your way to the backyard, rushing directly to where the Piplup were sitting. The Piplup that had been missing chirps in happiness when it sees you and you pick it up, holding it in the air.
“You worried me sick, you know that? And your mother too! Don’t run off again, you got it?” Piplup chirps again, and you bring it close, hugging it. “You’re all so important to me. I’m glad you’re okay.”
As if sensing its young was nearby, Empoleon pops out of its Pokeball. You and Piplup look at her and Piplup holds its flippers out to its mother. You set Piplup down, and Piplup waddles over to Empoleon. It puts its flippers on its side, standing triumphantly in front of its mother as it retells its tale to her.
Empoleon isn’t impressed at all with Piplup, and you watch as it opens its mouth, water building up until it becomes a powerful blast aimed right at Piplup.
“Empoleon!” Piplup goes flying back as the blast hits it, going farther and farther until it lands in the lake with a loud splash. You glare at Empoleon, who scoffs at you before attending to the other Piplup. You quickly rush off towards the lake, leaning over the edge in hopes you could see Piplup.
“Ah, crap… Where are you?” With still no sign of Piplup, you pull out a Pokeball as your next move. You throw it on the space next to you, a bright flash of light nearly blinding you. When you look again, the familiar Kadabra you had traded for earlier isn’t there, instead replaced with an Alakazam who looked unhappy to even be looking at you.
“…use Psychic to get Piplup out of the lake, please.”
“Ala.” Alakazam glances at the lake, then shakes its head.
“You have to listen to me. I’m your trainer now.” Alakazam shakes its head again and you glare at it. “Just do this one thing for me, okay? I’ll buy you super special Pokemon food if you do. Or you can talk to my Slowking-
“Ala.” A noise from the water gets your attention and you look to the lake once more. Piplup is hovering right above the water, a blue light surrounding it. You can tell Piplup is completely knocked out, but you could easily get it back on its feet. You watch as Piplup hovers over to you, dropping down into your arms gently when its close enough. The blue light around it fades, and you look to Alakazam.
“Thank- Alakazam?” You look around, trying to spot the Psi Pokemon, only to see it standing a little ways away by your Slowking. Slowking bows to it, and Alakazam bows right back. Alakazam just wanted to hang out with its own type, you supposed.
At least it helped you.
You make your way over to the shed with Piplup, opening the door and grabbing a Super Potion off of one of the shelves. You spray Piplup a few times, the bruises on it fading quickly until it looks just as it did.
And then, it’s hopping up out of your arms, landing on the ground. Piplup looks around, then up at you, and flaps its flippers up and down before pointing out of the shed.
“…don’t tell me you want revenge on your mom-
“Piplup!” Piplup is racing out of the shed before you can even stop it, and you groan in annoyance. Why were Piplups always so prideful? Piplup wasn’t going to win against Empoleon, and you guessed Piplup was going to figure that out the hard way.
“Uh, Y/N?” Taeyong peaks his head into the shed, a frown on his face. “I think Empoleon and Piplup are battling?”
“Yeah, don’t worry about it,” you say. Taeyong opens his mouth to say something but you quickly interrupt, pushing him back out of the door of the shed. You shut it behind you as you exit with him and look to the house.
“How’s Growlithe doing?” You ask. Taeyong is silent for a long moment next to you. You’re sure it has something to do with Doyoung’s sister, but you don’t question it and instead wait for Taeyong to speak.
“Arcanine is worried about it. I tried feeding it and petting it, but it didn’t even respond…”
“You don’t think it’s sick, right?” You ask. Taeyong shakes his head, looking to you. You make eye contact with him and he sighs.
“I think it got really attached-
“To Doyoung’s sister?” Taeyong nods. “…Well, maybe we can… Maybe we should give her Growlithe? In exchange for Litleo, maybe?”
Taeyong is silent again, and it’s your turn to sigh. “Taeyong, give her Growlithe at the festival.”
“What if she doesn’t- ow!” Taeyong rubs the spot where you had just punched his arm, giving you a pout. You give him a look back, one that was usually reserved for him being lazy, one that said he was about to be scolded if he didn’t get it together, and he immediately groans because of it. “Please don’t give me that face.”
“I wouldn’t have to if you just listened to me,” you say.
“Ugh… You’re the worst,” he replies back.
“And yet you’re still my best friend…” You laugh, punching him again before giving him that look once more. “Give her Growlithe at the festival.”
“…what if she doesn’t want Growlithe?” He asks. You roll your eyes at him. Your best friend was ridiculous.
“She’ll take it. I bet you an entire week’s worth of chores she’ll take Growlithe.”
Taeyong steps away, shaking his head. “I don’t even want to make that bet- you always win.”
“Smart thinking.”
“I’ll give her Growlithe at the… festival…” You raise your eyebrow at Taeyong as his sentence trails off, noticing he was staring off into the distance. You try and follow his line of sight, seeing exactly what he was seeing only seconds later.
“Please don’t tell me that’s Arcanine.”
“…I think Growlithe is trying to run away.”
“Oh my- go get them!” Taeyong hesitates only for a second before he’s busting into a run, yelling for his Pokemon. You sigh, and squeeze the bridge of your nose between your thumb and index finger. You really hoped that the festival would solve all these dumb problems.
-
“That cloud looks like a Mareep! I swear it does!” Doyoung laughs next to you.
“You think all the clouds look like Mareep.”
“I do not!” You sit up and point directly at the cloud you’re thinking of, the fluff of it taking on the fluff that would be seen on a Mareep, but there’s a few protrusions from the fluff that definitely look like legs and a head. “Look at it! It looks like a Mareep!”
Doyoung sits up as well, his eyes squinting a little before he shakes his head. “I don’t see it.”
“You don’t know Mareep then,” you say. Doyoung laughs again.
“I think you just like Mareep too much,” he replies. You frown, whining a little.
“They’re so cute, Doyoung. And you can’t even touch their wool- it makes me so sad.” Doyoung pats your back and you sigh. You’re about to say something else but notice a familiar Pokemon below you in the distance. A smile finds its way on your face just looking at the small figure standing next to it.
“Is she getting along with Blastoise?” You ask. Doyoung looks to where you’re looking and he shrugs.
“Sort of? Blastoise likes her but she doesn’t like Blastoise…” You laugh a little at your Pokemon. You’re not surprised Doyoung’s sister doesn’t like Blastoise much. Not only was Blastoise not her type of Pokemon, but, Blastoise could get clingy. You’re sure that’s all she showed to her temporary trainer.
“It’s totally the opposite with me. Alakazam doesn’t even look at me, but it likes my Slowking, so, I guess that’s better than nothing,” you say. Doyoung pats your back again, and his hand stays there as you sit on top of his house together.
It’s quite intimate, if you think about it, something very close to a date, but you don’t want to say anything. What if this was just a friendly thing between you and him? You didn’t want to make it awkward by asking if this was a date. You were friends, and ruining your friendship over something as dumb as you liking him wasn’t something you wanted.
But asking to watch the clouds with you and his hand on your back now…
“There’s a festival in town next week,” Doyoung speaks up, pulling you away from your thoughts.
“Oh, yeah. The Grand Festival. Taeyong and I have a lot of work to do before it happens,” you say. Every year, the town held a festival in honor of the Neo Isles establishing their Pokemon League, holding events every day to honor the other regions, including all the different Pokemon that were spread across the Isles. Guests from all the regions came to take part, the tradition one of the biggest on the Neo Isles, even if it was held in your small town.
And, with Taeyong and you growing up here, along with him being the current champion, you always took part in the festival. It was one of your favorite times of the year.
“You have a lot of work to do?” Doyoung asks. You nod.
“Taeyong’s the current champ, so he has to make his rounds greeting everybody and signing autographs and blah blah…”
“And you?” You look at Doyoung, shrugging.
“My parents always set up a booth so I have to help out with that plus this year Taeyong and I have our own booth to set up so. I’m sure it’ll keep me busy pretty much the whole week.” Doyoung frowns, looking down at his lap. The hand that had been resting on your back pulls away, moving to lay on his thigh. You frown at the loss of contact.
“You won’t have any free time at all?” He asks quietly.
You raise your eyebrow in confusion. What was he trying to get at?
“I mean, I can convince Taeyong and my parents to give me a day off or something if I wanted but then I’d have to tell people where to get Taeyong’s autograph and that’s so lame-
“So then you can’t go to the festival with me for even one day?” Doyoung blurts out. You stare at him for a long moment, your confusion slowly fading away at hearing his words. Was he asking you what you think he was asking you? Was this what you had been hoping for all this time?
“…I mean, if you’re asking me to go to the festival then I would be able to get time off. Depends on, I don’t know, why you’re asking though?”
Doyoung is silent next to you for only a few seconds before he’s looking at you. There’s a blush on his face and he has a look in his eye that you can’t quite get a read on. Usually, he was simple and easy to understand, but right now you just didn’t know.
“What?” You question.
“Are you and I thinking alike or am I reading all the signals wrong?” Doyoung asks. You shrug, hoping this was going where you think it was going.
“Depends on what kind of signals you’re reading…”
“The kind where- you know… Y/N…”
“What? I can’t read your mind, Dodo. What are you trying to say?” You ask. He groans, leaning in closer to you.
“I like you,” he whispers. He says it so quietly like it was supposed to be a secret, one you weren’t supposed to know. It’s a secret you’re sure he’s been keeping to himself for a while, one he hasn’t even told his sister, and it all ends up making you smile at him.
“You like me?” You repeat. He nods his head, biting his lip. “Like… as more than a friend?”
“Yes, as more than a friend. Which is why I’m asking you to spend a day at the festival with me… Or, an hour. Whatever works for you.”
“Like… as a date?” He nods again, the blush that had been on his face seeming to grow darker. It was adorable.
He was adorable.
“Yes, as a date. Unless you don’t like me back. I mean, you haven’t said anything back to my words and, well, that definitely isn’t good because I feel like if I’ve confessed to you you should either reject me or return my feelings and- mm.”
Your lips touch Doyoung’s in a spontaneous kiss, one that you didn’t even expect yourself to start. But sometimes when someone just rambled on you just had to kiss them…
Plus, Doyoung was just so kissable looking and he said he liked you. How could you not kiss him?
When you pull away, you smile, laughing a little. “Sometimes you just gotta chill out, Dodo.”
“…you still haven’t answered me,” he replies. You laugh again, leaning forward to kiss him again.
“Yes, I like you and yes, I’ll get time off to go on a date with you at the festival,” you say. He breathes a sigh of relief, smiling back at you.
“Great. Great. Uh, is it bad if I want to keep kissing you?” You shake your head, leaning in again. Doyoung doesn’t even hesitate to lean in as well, your lips pressing together once more.
-
It’s the day of your first official date with Doyoung, and, after debating back and forth to bring the egg that sat on your nightstand to show him, you were headed to the town to meet up with him. You mostly travel alone, your Pokemon already set up at the festival for people to get a feel for your farm and the Pokemon you were offering.
Your only companion was the egg you carried, practically lifeless as you walked. You’re not sure what you were hoping at showing Doyoung the egg, but anything would help. Maybe he could tell you something about the egg or at least something you could do to hatch it. Even with your knowledge, there were still some things you didn’t know, and Doyoung luckily made up for all the knowledge you were missing.
He was bound to know something about your egg. You were sure of it.
When you get closer to town, you place the egg back in its incubator and put that back into your backpack, not wanting it to get jostled by all the hustle and bustle in town. Having it in your arms on your walk alone was one thing, but in town was an entirely different story.
And, when the time was right, you’d be able to show Doyoung the egg and hopefully have another opinion on the situation.
“Y/N!” You turn in the direction of your name, seeing Doyoung coming out from the crowd. You wave at him as he gets closer, and give him a hug when he’s right in front of you.
“What took so long? I’m pretty sure the festival started two hours ago,” he says. You roll your eyes and shove at him.
“I was preparing a surprise for you, but, since you seem to be so impatient, I just won’t give you any surprises next time,” you say. He shakes his head, putting an arm around your shoulder and pulling you close.
“No, forget I said anything. What’s this surprise?”
“It’s a surprise, Dodo. I can’t tell you,” you say. He pouts next to you and you wrap an arm around his middle, grinning at him. “Yet.”
Doyoung makes a noise of protest but doesn’t say anything else on the subject, instead quickly moving onto something else. “What do you want to do first? I heard there’s a stall for eggs today-
“Oh my god, Doyoung, don’t try and think about work, okay? This is a date,” you say. Doyoung’s pout seems to grow bigger, and you laugh, poking his face. “If I remember correctly, there’s a game where you can win plushies…”
“…I’m really bad at those games,” Doyoung says immediately. You shrug, stepping forward as you begin to walk.
“If you win me on, I’ll win you one,” you say.
“Can’t I just buy you something?” You shake your head, pulling at his arm.
“Let’s go win some prizes!”
-
As it turns out, Doyoung is even worse than you expected. The game is simple enough, toss a Pokeball at your Plushie of choice three times as it moves along a conveyor belt. You expected him to at least hit it once, but each time the he throws, the Pokeball goes soaring elsewhere. It’s pretty pathetic, watching him, and you had told him he could just buy you something after all. After losing the first three times though, he was determined to win you something.
“Dodo, you’re going to waste like… all your money,” you say, tugging at the bottom of his shirt. “Come on…”
“No! I’m going to win something!” You watch as another Pokeball flies in the air, the person running the game ducking as it whizzes above him. You’re not sure how Doyoung ever caught any Pokemon when his aim was this bad.
“Doyoung-
“Another round!” Doyoung says, slamming money on the counter. You’re about to pull him away when a voice calls his name, both you and him turning around to see who it was. A man you haven’t seen in years comes walking over, a look of relief on his face when he sees Doyoung.
“I was hoping I’d see you here,” he says. Doyoung sighs next to you, pulling back his money from the counter.
“Good to see you too, dad.”
You look between Doyoung and his dad, Norman, Petalburg City Gym Leader, realization dawning on you. Of course that was his dad. You remember him mentioning it a while back, and what with it being Hoenn day, he was bound to show up. A gym leader from every region always showed up to the festival.
Sensing that maybe they’d need some alone time, you take a step back, bowing slightly to the two of them.
“I’ll leave you guys alone, then. I’ll be by the… uh, the Lava Cookie stand, okay?” Doyoung nods and you quickly fade into the crowd, not wanting to be part of their awkward encounter any longer.
On your way to the Lava Cookie stand, you see a flyer on one of the light poles. You move closer to see exactly what it was, smiling at reading the familiar words.
Two months after the festival, the Neo Isles held a battle competition for any trainer willing to participate with a certain type, getting a prize at the end and a chance to battle the current champion. You continue reading to see what the types were chosen for this year.
Normal, Grass, and Psychic are the ones you read, and you smile, knowing two people exactly with those types, two people who you wouldn’t mind seeing battle.
You pull out a pen from your bag, moving to the bottom of the flyer where you could sign people up in their specific categories. You write Doyoung’s name as neatly as possible, snickering as you move to write his sister’s name as well.
Except, something in you tells you to stop. Writing Doyoung’s name was one thing, because he’d just grumble about it and accept, but his sister would probably throw a fit and stop being friends with you.
You pull away, capping your pen and putting it back in your bag. Maybe you could convince her to join in later instead.
You step away from the light pole, resuming your trip to your original destination. You pass by more stalls, not really bothering to pay attention to much as you go. They were things you’ve seen before, plus, you had to buy a few Lava Cookies before they were sold out.
The Lava Cookie stall comes into view only minutes later, and you sigh in relief at seeing that there was still plenty left.
“Hmm, how many do I want…?” You ask yourself, browsing the selection. Not only were Lava Cookies ridiculously delicious, but they also had great healing properties. You sit there for a few thoughtful moments, debating on whether just a few was enough. Maybe two dozen or even more would be okay to buy…
“Oh, Y/N!” You look up at the sound of your name, seeing a smiley face rushing towards you. Only a second later, and he’s barreling into you, pulling you into a tight hug.
“Ow- woah- Johnny, dude, you’re crushing me!” You laugh. Johnny quickly let’s go, grinning at you.
“Sorry, sorry. I just- wow. We haven’t seen each other in forever,” he says. Johnny was an old friend of yours and Taeyong’s, someone who had traveled with you for a bit back when you were in the Hoenn region. You guys had some fun adventures together, and it was good to see him, especially since you weren’t expecting it.
“It’s good to see you. Where’s Yuta? Did he fall in a Diglett hole again or what?” Johnny laughs, looking around before shrugging.
“Not sure, actually. Maybe he’s chasing after Mankey again.” You roll your eyes, sighing.
“He’s definitely going to fall into a Diglett hole again then,” you say. Johnny laughs again and you turn back to the Lava Cookies before you. “I’m debating whether to buy a bunch of Lava Cookies or not. What do you think?”
“Depends on how many is a bunch,” Johnny says.
“Like, two dozen?”
“They are pretty good…” Johnny and you sigh together, staring at the Lava Cookies on display. Buying two dozen might be too much, but then again, Taeyong was bound to eat them too.
“Okay, okay.” You look up at the lady running the stall, grinning at her. “Two dozen Lava Cookies, please!”
“That’s kind of a lot, don’t you think?” You jump at the voice behind you, but grin when you see Doyoung standing there, an eyebrow raised at you.
“Says the one who pigged out on like, thirty Rage Candy Bars the other day,” you say. Doyoung flushes, looking away from you with a pout. You laugh, grabbing his hand and pulling him close. “I’m just messing, Dodo.”
“…Who’s this, Y/N?” Johnny asks. You turn to him, squeezing Doyoung’s hand.
“This is Doyoung. Doyoung, this is Johnny. Johnny traveled with Taeyong and I back in Hoenn a few years back so we’re good buddies,” you say. The two boys are silent, both staring at each other until the Lava Cookie lady interrupts them. You quickly pay her and take the bag of Lava Cookies from her before thanking her as well.
“Blastoise let him travel with you?” Doyoung asks. You laugh, nodding your head.
“I think Johnny got sprayed with a Water Gun every morning!” Johnny laughs at the memory as well.
“Don’t remind me. I still think sometimes I’ll be woken up by her again…” Johnny says. You’re about to speak up when you feel a tug on your hand, and you look to Doyoung.
“Well, Y/N and I should get back to our date so if you’ll excuse us…” Doyoung tugs at your hand again and you nod, waving at Johnny who has a surprised expression on his face. You decide to ignore it, not wanting to keep Doyoung waiting any longer.
“Hopefully we’ll see each other at the Battle Competition! Tell Yuta I said hi, okay?” Johnny nods his head, waving back at you until you’re being pulled away by Doyoung.
You’re walking with the crowd once again, happy and excited to eat one of the Lava Cookies as you hold Doyoung’s hand. The date was going well, and that’s all you could hope for at such a busy festival like this.
“How was your talk with your dad?” You ask, munching on one of the cookies. Doyoung shrugs, awfully silent next to you. You look at him, his face thoughtful as he stares at the ground. You don’t really like that look on him, especially when you’d rather see him smiling. Bumping into him a little, you speak up.
“It was nothing bad, right?” Doyoung shakes his head.
“No… It just left me thinking is all. We talked about my sister more than me and him but… He said to call him sometime next week to talk more so…”
“It was kind of productive?”
“Mm… He didn’t seem upset at me which I guess is good… But enough about that. Let’s focus on our date right now,” Doyoung says. You take the last bite of your cookie before humming in agreement.
You should focus on your date. That was what was important today.
Except, you see a familiar face sitting on a bench a few feet in front of you, and immediately the thought of having her sign up for the battle competition enters your mind again. You tug at Doyoung’s hand, pulling him in another direction so you could get a surprise attack on his sister.
“Where are we going?” He asks.
“Just a little detour! Come on!” You drag him around the crowd, around a building, and through a few stalls until you’re behind the bench that his sister was still sitting at. You tiptoe to her, putting a finger to your lips to make sure Doyoung stayed silent. Once you’re close enough, you put your hands on her shoulders, frowning when she barely reacts.
It’s not at all what you were hoping for, but the flyer in her hand grabs your attention enough to distract you from whining about it.
“What’cha got there?” You ask, already knowing was it was. You don’t even have to look over the flyer to know what it was.
“Can you please get off me?” Doyoung’s sister asks. Doyoung snorts as she shakes you off, and you pull away, laughing a little as well.
“I saw dad earlier,” Doyoung says as you move to stand in front of his sister.
“I know. He came to visit apparently.”
“You and him had a talk?” Doyoung asks. His sister holds out the flyer in her hands, a look of uncertainty on her face.
“He said I should participate in this,” she says.
“You should join, then,” Doyoung speaks up.
“I… I’m not good enough.”
Your eyes widen at her words and you smile at her, shaking your head. “You were great in the battle with me!”
You didn’t want her to think badly about her skills, especially when she was great. She probably could’ve beaten you if you hadn’t used Taeyong as a distraction, or if you had been nice and let her win. She was a great trainer, no matter what she thought.
“I’m not a trainer. I don’t qualify,” she tries again. You roll your eyes.
“You own Pokemon and have at least three badges from any eligible League; you definitely qualify!” You reply back. She had no excuses not to battle.
All of a sudden, you think of the Alakazam you had in your bag. You pull it out, handing it over to her. If she was going to battle, she definitely needed one of her strongest Pokemon. You’re sure seeing it again would cheer her up and encourage her a little to join in the competition.
Besides, you were ready to get Blastoise back.
“Yours,” you say. “I’m sure it would much rather listen to its actual Trainer and be a suitable candidate for your competition.”
She takes the Pokeball, releasing the Pokemon inside. A smile so bright spreads across her face and you smile in triumph. This whole convincing thing was definitely working.
“Two spoons now instead of one!” Alakazam nods and crosses its arm, its spoons spinning happily as she hugs her Pokemon. You gawk at it in amazement.
“I would never be able to do that in a million years,” you say.
“Did Doyoung give you back your Blastoise?” She asks. You’re about to respond, but Doyoung quickly butts in.
“Of course I did. And I also signed you up while I was talking with dad, so you have no choice but to compete.” You want to call Doyoung out on his bullcrap about your Pokemon, because you definitely didn’t have a Blastoise, but you stay silent, watching the two siblings as they continue to talk.
“Doyoung!”
“He and I both know you actually really enjoy battling. You just never got to use the types you like and now you can.”
His sister stares at him for a moment before smiling. “Hmmm. I’ll only compete if you do it too.”
“No way, I can’t battle,” Doyoung says. You laugh, butting into the conversation.
“I actually signed you up for the Normal Division. I wanted to see how you’d do battling with other people.”
“What?!” Doyoung glares at you but you ignore him, grabbing both his sister’s hand and his, raising them in the air.
“Both siblings are going to compete in this year’s GTC! Woohoo!”
“You are too excited about this…” His sister says. You drop her hand, shrugging.
“I can’t compete this year, so I have to live vicariously through you. You gotta win, okay?” You say. She frowns at you, and you pat her shoulder once before beginning to pull away. “There’s going to be something special if you do, so you gotta win!”
“But-
“No buts! Come on Doyoung. I have something to show you.”
-
“Is this my surprise?” He asks as you sit at an empty picnic table by the Pokemon Center. You nod your head, taking off your backpack and setting it on the table. Doyoung watches as you unzip it, pulling out the incubator and the egg inside. You set it next to your backpack, and look at him.
“I found this egg months ago when Taeyong and I were traveling back here. I don’t know what it is, and it doesn’t look like it’s ever going to hatch. But, I’m trusting you with it right now to see if maybe you can… I don’t know. Tell me anything. You’ve been doing this longer than me.”
Doyoung looks up at you, then back at the egg. He reaches out for it, pulling back a second later. “Thank you for trusting me… Can I look closer at it?”
You hesitate for a moment, taking a deep breath. You were trusting Doyoung with this. You could let the egg out of your hands for a few moments.
You take the top off the incubator and reach inside for the egg, gently handing it off to Doyoung. He holds it just as carefully, and begins looking it over.
“Still warm… The crack in it is kind of concerning but… Besides that, it seems okay. How long ago did you say you got it?”
“Five or six months ago? Maybe?” Doyoung frowns, tilting his head in confusion.
“I’ve had eggs that have taken months to hatch but that’s… a little too long. But it’s not… you know.” You hum in understanding, neither of you wanting to say the worst-case scenario. That would just be heartbreaking.
“I had Empoleon and Arcanine both watch it for a bit, and there was still nothing. I’ve just been keeping my eye on it since then so…”
“Have you tried having any Pokemon with Flame Body take care of it?” You shake your head, laughing a little.
“Really Doyoung?” He laughs as well, realizing his mistake.
“Right, Water Type trainer. How could I forget?” He laughs again, and then hands the Pokemon Egg back to you. “I have a friend who has a Magby. I know she’s somewhere here tonight so if you want to try that out, we can.”
“Do you think it’ll help it hatch?” Doyoung shrugs as you put the egg back into the incubator. You close it up and place it back into your bag, slipping it back onto your back.
“It’s worth a shot. Maybe we could visit the egg stall too if this doesn’t work. Maybe they’ll know something,” Doyoung says. He stands up and walks around the side of the table, holding out a hand for you. “Come on.”
You take Doyoung’s hand, squeezing it as you begin walking.
-
Ten minutes later and you’re standing at your own stall, waiting for Doyoung’s friend to arrive. Your Piplup are running around below you, while your Squirtle sit on the counter top with you, each of them sprouting bubbles to impress passerby. You weren’t selling any Pokemon today, but if people wanted, they could take a handout that gave all the information necessary for your farm.
Unsurprisingly, your Slowking was a good stand-in for you and Taeyong while you were out and about for the day. You smile at it as it hands out flyers to people, thanking them when they take one, and you wonder if maybe you should just let Slowking handle the booth for the rest of the festival.
“…your Slowking is so cool,” you hear Doyoung say. You laugh, nodding your head.
“I bet your sister would love it. You think I should give her a Slowpoke?” Doyoung’s face suddenly sprouts a pout, and you raise an eyebrow at him. “What?”
“Why don’t I get any Pokemon as gifts?”
“…There’s not many Normal, Water Type Pokemon, now are there?”
“I don’t need a Normal Type. You could give me anything-
“Doyoung!” Doyoung is cut short as you watch two people rushing your way, two Pokemon rushing right behind them. As they come closer, you don’t recognize either of them, but the Pokemon you know, so you focus on them once they’re in front of you.
“Wow, a Chikorita and a Tepig! They’re so cute!” Chikorita and Tepig immediately make friends with your Piplup, all of them beginning to run circles around each other.
“You must be Y/N,” the boy says, holding his hand out. “I’m Jaehyun.”
“The Grass Gym Leader, right?” He nods his head, and you grab his hand, shaking it. The girl who had been running with him is already talking with Doyoung, both of them looking at the egg that was in your lap.
As you watch them, the girl starts to look familiar. You feel like you knew her from somewhere. Maybe someone you met when you were younger? You’re not sure.
“Magby, come on out,” the girl says. A Magby is standing in front of her a moment later and she bends down, waving you over. You hop off the counter, coming to kneel down next to her.
“Okay, Magby. I have a special mission for you,” she says. Magby nods, listening to her intently. “This is Y/N and her egg is having trouble hatching. Could you help her warm it up to see if it can hatch?”
Magby looks between its trainer and the egg a few times before nodding its head in understanding. It turns to you a second later and you set the incubator down on the ground. You take off the top, and take the egg out as you move to sit on the ground. Magby comes closer to you and touches the egg with one hand, feeling it for a moment. It looks up at you and then back at the egg, a determined look on its face. A second hand is placed on the egg, and you can see the heat from Magby radiating from it, to the egg.
“Should I get any other Pokemon to help-
“Tepig!”
“Chikor!”
You look behind you where Tepig and Chikorita were practically sizing each other up, a glare in both their eyes. Your Piplup are looking between each other, back and forth until they all back away at the situation at hand. You’re glad you decided against letting their other two siblings join the festival, otherwise you know they would be in between Chikorita and Tepig by now.
These Piplup had enough sense not to get into a fight that wasn’t theirs, thankfully.
“Tepig, hey! Stop it!” Its trainer calls to it.
“Tepig!”
“Chikor- Chikor!” Jaehyun attempts to pull Chikorita away from Tepig, but as he does, Tepig opens its mouth and lets out an Ember. It catches to Chikorita’s leaf and Chikorita immediately wiggles free, running past you to try as it tries to get rid of the flame.
“Chikorita!” Jaehyun runs after his Pokemon, and you look to his friend, frowning.
“Tepig, why did you do that?” His trainer yells.
“Tepig, Tepig!” Tepig goes running past you a moment later, crying out its name as it goes. Its trainer looks after it before looking to you.
“I’ll be right back, okay? Watch my Magby?”
“Of course.”
The girl runs after her Tepig, and you look to Doyoung. He laughs awkwardly before coming to sit next to you, wrapping an arm around you.
“Good thing our Pokemon aren’t complete opposites,” he says. You smile and lean your head on his shoulder, looking down at Magby and your egg. Magby has its eyes closed, concentrating hard on giving the egg heat. It was clearly determined, but you’re not sure it was really going to do anything. There could be a possibility the egg wasn’t ever going to hatch.
You frown, feeling tears prick your eyes at the thought.
“…what if this doesn’t work?” You quietly ask. Doyoung doesn’t say anything for a moment. You don’t want to think negatively about this egg. You had already told yourself you wouldn’t.
But it was so hard not too when it hadn’t shown signs of hatching since you found it.
“Y/N, hey,” Doyoung lifts your head away from his shoulder and smiles softly at you. It’s your favorite smile on him. “I think Magby is trying its best, and we should believe in it, yeah? You haven’t given up on your egg for months. You can’t give up now.”
You look down at Magby, still concentrating on giving heat to the egg. You look at the egg, glowing red from Magby’s touch, the blue and red shapes on the shell glowing with it. Your eyes travel back to Doyoung, who is still smiling at you with that soft smile. You smile back when his hand finds yours on the egg, and you nod your head.
“You’re right. I can’t give up now.”
Suddenly, you hear a cracking below you. You look down at the egg, the cracking continuing through the top of the egg. You look to Doyoung who looks at you with wide eyes, and you both look to the egg once more.
All at once, the top of the egg falls away, and a cream-colored head is revealed. The head opens up slowly, five spikes spreading apart as a face appears from below the shell. Hands and feet have sprouted from the shell as well, and you stare at the Pokemon as it opens its eyes. Black eyes meet yours and it smiles at you, saying its name.
“Togepi!”
You blink a few times, wondering if this was real. Was the egg you had been looking after for so long finally hatched? Was there really a Pokemon in your hands, alive, breathing, saying its name to you?
The tears that had come earlier are falling now, unable to stop as you stare at your new Pokemon. This wasn’t a dream or anything like it. This Pokemon was real. You’re not sure you could explain how happy you were.
“Togepi?” Tears start to fall from Togepi’s eyes as well and you shake your head, smiling at it.
“Dont cry, Togepi. I’m happy, see? I’m happy you’re here. I’m really happy,” you say. Togepi immediately stops crying, and it smiles at you once again, happy at hearing that you were happy. You smile back, and bring it close, hugging it. You were happy Doyoung was right. You were happy Magby had helped you bring Togepi with you.
You were happy Togepi was in your arms.
“I’m so happy you’re here.”
-
“Woah, is that a Togepi?” You nod at your best friend, wiggling Togepi a little as he comes closer. The festival was winding down, and you and Doyoung had spent most of your time at your booth together, watching over Togepi and your Pokemon.
“Where did you… Oh, wait is that-
“The egg? Yep. Hatched earlier.” You hold out Togepi to let Taeyong hold it. He reaches for it and takes Togepi in his hands, but Togepi doesn’t like it at all. It immediately starts crying, reaching back for you and Taeyong quickly gives it back.
“I… guess it doesn’t like me,” Taeyong says, a dejected look on his face. Togepi happily calls out its name once its back in your arms and you frown at it.
“That’s weird. It was fine when Doyoung held it,” you say. You look over to Doyoung who is having a conversation with your Slowking, clearly interested in the Pokemon’s talking ability. You call out his name, and he looks to you, excusing himself before walking over.
“What’s up?” You hold out Togepi for him, letting him take it into his arms. Togepi squeals in happiness and wiggles its arms and legs as Doyoung holds it.
“…hand Togepi over to Taeyong,” you say. Doyoung does as you ask, and once more Togepi starts crying again. Doyoung quickly takes it back, cooing at Togepi to stop crying. You glance at Taeyong, his lips perked up at you in a smirk.
“What?”
“I think Togepi thinks you’re its parents,” he says, snorting a little. You face flushes and you shove at him, shaking your head.
“It does not!”
“Okay, then let’s have someone else hold it and see what happens.” Taeyong picks a random person out of the crowd, asking them over to your booth. He explains what exactly he wants the person to do, and when they laugh in understanding, they hold out their hands to Doyoung. Doyoung reluctantly hands over Togepi to the stranger, and immediately, Togepi is crying and reaching out to be taken back.
“Oh my god…” You watch Doyoung take Togepi back, once again cooing at it to stop it from crying, even though it practically already has just by being in Doyoung’s arms. You flush again just watching them, knowing Taeyong was totally right.
Togepi thought you and Doyoung were its parents.
“You two make good parents,” you hear Taeyong say. You shove at him again, shaking your head.
“Shut up-
“Y/N.” You look away from Taeyong to Doyoung, smiling a little at him. Togepi reaches for you with a smile on its face and you take it from him. Doyoung stands there quietly next to you for a short moment before he’s placing a hand on one of yours.
“I think Taeyong is right. I think Togepi thinks we’re its parents,” he says. As if understanding what you were talking about Togepi squeals, wiggling once more in your arms.
“Togepi!”
“If that’s the case… then I guess we’ll be seeing each other a lot more, huh?” You nod your head, leaning in a little closer.
“I mean, I guess so. I don’t mind much though. I think raising Togepi together will be like another adventure,” you say. Doyoung smiles, leaning even closer until your foreheads are touching.
“I hear you like adventures,” he says. You nod your head once more.
“I like them even more when I get to be with you.”
