After the events of S4. Eddie develops an aversion to thunder and lightning. Not an outright fear of it because his newfound dislike of it is linked to his mood at the time of said thunder and lightning. Eddie has PTSD there's no doubt about that, and it's at its worst for the next two years of his life. Things start to calm more after that. But he will always have PTSD thanks to what happened to him in Spring 86 as well as the trauma from his childhood.

The gist is that thunder and lightning brings him back to the time that he died in the upside down for a couple of minutes. There's the build up to it with the bats attacking him, then slowly dying in that poor kids arms. Yes, he's absolutely traumatised about traumatising a kid because he too was a traumatised kid, albeit for different reasons. And then there was the last breath he took before air abandoned him completely. The one constant presence during those few awful event minutes was, you guessed it---thunder and lightning. It's quite literally a trigger for him.

But as I suggested. This trigger is not always activated when thunder and lightning occur. What will trigger it is if it catches him by surprise, but Eddie keeps an eye on the weather more than ever after realising it fucks him up. So, it can't catch him out so often. Or if Eddie is already in a spiralling mood because of other ptsd symptoms, or in a general low mood due to his mental health. That will trigger it too.

If he knows it's gonna storm. He'll usually knock himself out with sleeping tablets or whatever is available to him at the time. Steve too is an absolute anchor for him, and he'd be a lot worse off without his care and reassurance. Steve takes good care of him for which he is eternally grateful. Eddie is fortunate have a good support network with Robin and his band bros too, whom he would call if Steve wasn't available for whatever reason.
