Tbh, I personally don't care about them being related per se (Like I understand why people are uncomfortable, but I'm also tired of them gasping at second cousins in a relationship as if it's Targaryen or Lannisters level of sibling fucking; even in modern Russia cousins and second cousins can marry freely) the point where things get fucked up, imo, is that Sonya's fate whole social circle consists of one family: her parental figures, her best friend, her beloved are all Rostovs and in the end it backfires on her (side note: I don't think it's her fault: being a maid without dowry in a society where it's a determining factor of a bride's loveliness doesn't leave you many options to improve your situation)

I wondered briefly how it was possible for Nikolai/Sonya to happen and the most simple and logical conclusion is that Sonya probably was never seen as a part of the family. Even in her first appearance in the novel she expresses the thought that she's grateful for what the Rostovs have done to her (and Vera brings her to tears by calling her ungrateful and saying that her marriage with Nikolai would ruin his career and that he would marry Julie) and when Nikolai announces his engagement with Sonya, Countess immediately calls her an intriguer as if she seduced Nikolai). Sonya was seen as a threat and an inferior creature, and I think it's pretty obvious that she was aware of this treatment and tried to overcome it.

And when I look at, like, the whole picture of this situation I become feral with rage: here we have a girl taken in and as a ward from most likely early age, a girl deprived of the fundamental unconditional love, a girl devoted to a fault, a girl calling maman a woman who doesn't hesitate to eliminate the threat Sonya poses by not being a rich enough bride for her precious boy.

rereading some of the earlier rostov sections of war and peace, and sonya and nikolai’s relationship is so much more fucked up than I remember it being. we talk about it like it’s a normal teen romance but it’s not. it is literally incest, people. let’s get real
