Hey love! I’m thinking about making a Magnus blog. Do you have any advice on writing him?

HI ANON !!   I’M NOT SURE IF I’M THE BEST PERSON  to  be  asking  about  this ,     but  i  have  admittedly  been  writing  magnus  for  a  while  so  i  would  be  happy  to  give  you  some  tips  !!     first  of  all ,     this  isn’t  exactly  writing  advice  but  i  have  an  obligation  to  remind  you  to  please  try  and  avoid  whitewashing  your  icons  !!     i’ve  seen  a  lot  of  magnus  rpers  do  it  over  the  years  and  still  see  it  from  time  to  time .     there  are  a  ton  of  free  psds  that  are  poc  friendly  out  there  and  if  you’re  having  trouble  finding  them ,     please  feel  free  to  come  to  me  and  i’ll  help  you  out  with  that  !!     

          secondly ,     know  your  languages .     magnus  was  born  in  java ,     but  the  main  spoken  language  among  locals  in  jakarta  /  batavia  has  never  been  javanese .     the  ethnic  group  in  the  area  is  the  betawi  people ,     who  are descended  from  the  people  who  inhabited  batavia  from  the  17th  century  onwards ,     and  their  main  language  is  malay  /  bahasa  malaysia .     bahasa  indonesia  /  indonesian  is  actually  a  standardised  register  of  malay  !!     so  you’re  totally  allowed  to  write  magnus  without  any  mention  of  his  mother  tongue  but  if  you  would  like  to  explore  it  then  your  best  bet  would  be  bahasa  indonesia  or  bahasa  malaysia     (  the  novels  establish  indonesian  as  the  language  of  the  maternal  side  of  his  family ,     but  i  think  the  show  has  a  little  more  breathing  room  ) .     i  actually  mentioned  it  in  a  post  i  made  a  while  back ,     but  malay ,     ‘ the  italian  of  the  east , ’     was  deemed  easy  to  learn  by  the  dutch  settlers  and  very  useful  as  an  intermediary  for  trade  and  communication  with  the  local  people .     learning  malay  was  also  a  necessity  given  their  small  numbers  in  the  indonesian  archipelago :     by  1795  there  were  no  more  than  543  dutchmen  living  in  batavia .     so ,     you  know .     there’s  a  big  chance  magnus’  stepfather  spoke  at  least  some  bahasa  malaysia  too  !!   

          other  than  that ,     i  really  just  encourage  you  to  explore  his  character  the  way  you  see  fit .     don’t  let  any  lingering  show  /  book  divide  dictate  how  you  portray  him  !!     magnus  bane  is  an  exceptionally  multi  -  dimensional  character  with  centuries  of  untapped  adventures  and  formative  experiences ,     and  you  shouldn’t  be  afraid  to  allow  that  to  shape  the  way  you  write  him .     by  the  time  he  was  sixteen  years  old ,     he  was  lying  about  his  age  to  impress  clients .     can  you  imagine  how  hard  he  must  have  worked  to  get  where  he  was  in  that  amount  of  time  ??     there  was  never  a  safety  net  for  him ,     no  second  chances .     he  was  pushing  himself  to  no  end  while  other  kids  were  having  regular  childhoods  that  he  should  have  been  experiencing ,     too .     reading ,     learning ,     working  at  controlling  his  volatile  magic ,     and  being  desperate  to  get  his  hands  on  as  much  knowledge  as  possible .     

          we’re  all  familiar  with  the  flamboyant ,     decadent  high  warlock  of  brooklyn ,     but  you  can’t  forget  that  he  also  has  a  completely  different  person  in  him .     the  one  who  is  angry ,     the  one  who  is  intense ,     the  one  who  will  claw  his  way  to  success     &&     refuse  to  let  anyone  stop  him .     he’s  brave  and  charming  and  cunning  and  has  a  tendency  to  be  a  rather  morally  grey  person ,     swayed  only  by  a  pretty  face  or  the  end  of  the  world     (  let’s  not  forget  the  fact  that  the  only  reason  he  agreed  to  help  smuggle  marie  antoinette  was  because  of  axel  von  fersen’s  pretty  blue  eyes     &&     black  hair ,     or  that  he  was  entirely  unwilling  to  help  clary ,     a  girl  he’d  known  for  years ,     until  she  helped  his  people  in  the  television  series  ) …     and  of  course ,     somewhere  deep  down ,     he  can  also  be  extraordinarily  selfless .     every  magnus  i’ve  seen  and  spoken  to  has  a  wonderfully  original  take  on  him ,     whether  they  are  show ,     book ,     or  headcanon  influenced     (  or  even  a  blend  of  everything  !!  ) ,     and  i  can’t  wait  to  see  where  you  take  him .

2.  ARE THERE ANY LANGUAGES BESIDES ENGLISH IN WHICH YOU THINK YOU COULD COMFORTABLY ROLEPLAY:    gosh ,     i  don’t  think  so ,     to  be  honest  !!    i’m  okay  with  bahasa  indonesia  /  malaysia ,     but  even  then  i  usually  have  to  ask  my  mum  for  help  and  i  wouldn’t  want  her  to  have  to  check  my  rp  replies  of  all  things ;     not  to  mention  that  i  doubt  anyone  else     (  in  the  shadowhunters  rpc ,     at  least  )     speaks  the  language  !!     i  can  usually  write  basic  phrases  in  italian  and  french ,     which  is  helpful  with  magnus ,     but  i  think  i  would  be  doing  a  disservice  to  any  other  language  by  trying  to  rp  in  it  !!

16.  FAVOURITE MOVIE:    i’m  going  to  majorly  cop  out  here     &&     say  that  i  have  three  favourite  films  !!     moulin  rouge     (  2001 ) ,     kill  your  darlings     (  2013  ) ,     and  anastasia     (  1997  ) .     clearly ,     historical  artsy  films  and  musicals  are  my  two  weaknesses .  17.  A FACT ABOUT MY LIFE:    i  love  horse  riding  !!     i  took  lessons  for  about  three  years ,     and  also  volunteered  to  help  out  with  the  horses  at  the  disabled  riding  school  near  my  house .     i  stopped  both  when  i  injured  my  hip  a  while  ago  and  didn’t  have  the  time  to  get  back  in  the  saddle     (  ha  )     during  my  later  years  of  high  school ,     but  i  want  to  get  back  into  it  within  the  next  year  if  i  can  !!

16.  DO YOU FIRST GET IN THE ZONE WHEN WRITING, OR DO YOU START WRITING AND ENTER IT THAT WAY:   it  often  ends  up  being  the  latter .     sometimes  i’ll  put  on  music  or  shadowhunters  in  the  background ,     but  i  don’t  think  that  affects  my�� muse  because  i’ll  either  be  ready  to  write  or  not  in  the  mood ;     there  isn’t  much  way  around  it  if  not  !!     it’s  probably  why  there  are  times  when  i’ll  be  happily  spouting  replies  left  and  right ,     and  times  when  there’s  complete  radio  silence  on  my  end .     lately ,     it’s  mostly  because  i’ve  been  busy ,     but  another  factor  is  that  i  can’t  force  the  little  magnus  in  my  head  to  help  me  out  if  he  doesn’t  want  to  !!

           THERE IS NO DENYING THAT A WELL-TAILORED SUIT  has  made  Merlin  Wyllt  look  like  a  different  man ;     he  looks  as  if  he  was     BORN     for  this ,     but  Magnus  can’t  help  but  to  acknowledge  his  uncertainty  regarding  the  sight  of  the  other  blending  in  with  the  pretentious  bigots  of  his  own class .     For  now ,     however ,     he  allows  himself  to  simply     LOOK     as  he  completes  the  remainder  of  his  journey ,     fingertips  ghosting  over  the  railing  to  keep  himself  steady     (  he’s  certain  that  if  it  had  not  been  for  the  steady  presence  at  his  side ,     he  would  have  lost  his  footing  the  moment  he  had  laid  eyes  on  his  guest  ) .     It’s  when  he  comes  to  a  halt  a  few  steps  above  the  other  that  Magnus  finally  sees  the  details :     the  gleam  of  what  seems  to  be  a  blend  of  anticipation  and  hesitance  in  his  eyes ,     his  high     &&     cutting  cheekbones ,     his  lips  devastatingly  plush  beneath  the  generous  lighting …     a  fit  subject  for  the  pleasant  songs  of  youthful  poets  to  acquaint  the  world  with .

                    He  looks  otherworldly ,     possessing  a  striking  kind  of  beauty  that  the  wonders  of  which  mortals  will  never  quite  be  satisfied  with ;     almost  as  if  he  doesn’t  belong  somewhere  as  drearily  ordinary  as  Earth ,     but  Magnus  surmises  with  unyielding  belief  that  it  would  hardly  surprise  him  to  see  such  a  face  residing  among  the  angels  in  the  Heavens  above .          ❝     You’re  full  of  SURPRISES ,     aren’t  you ,     Mr .   Wyllt ??     ❞          He  observes  in  lieu  of  a  proper  greeting ,     amusement  playing  blatantly  across  his  features  as  he  reaches  out  with  the  hand  not  currently  resting  atop  the  banister  in  order  to  reach  out     &&     smooth  down  the  lapel  of  the  other’s  jacket .     Even  after  he  has  completed  his  task ,     however ,     Magnus  lingers ,     brown  eyes  meeting  with  blue  as  Merlin’s  heart  continues  to  beat  beneath  his  palm  in  striking  synchronicity  with  his  own .     It’s  only  after  a  moment  that  he  can  bring  himself  to  speak  once  more ,     unwilling  to  be  the  one  to  divert  his  gaze .          ❝     Not  that  I’m  complaining ,     of  course .     The  suit  becomes  you .     ❞

          MEMANG TIDAK BOLEH DINAFIKAN bila  Merlin  Wyllt  pakai  saman  kemas  dia  nampak  lain ;     dia  agar     LAHIR     didunia  untuk  ini ,     tetapi  Magnus  tidak  pasti  kalau  dia  boleh  bersama  orang - orang  bangsawan  kelas  megah  sendiri .     Untuk  masa  kini ,     dia  akan  benarkan  dirinya     PANDANG     sahaja  sementara  dia  selesaikan  perjalanan  secara  mantap     (  dia  pasti  bahawa  kalau  bukan  untuk  kehadiran  mantap  di  sebelahnya  dia  akan  kehilangan  kedudukannya  ketika  dia  menatap  tetamunya  ) .     Ketika  dia  berhenti  beberapa  langkah  di  atas  barulah  Magnus  akhirnya  melihat  buktiran :     sinar  yang  seolah - olah  menjadi  gabungan  jangkaan  dan  ragu - ragu  di  matanya ,     tulang  pipi  tinggi ,     bibirnya  dahsyat  mewah  di  bawah  pancaran  cahaya  yang  kuat …     subjek  yang  sesuai  untuk  lagu - lagu  penakluk  muda  di  dunia .

                   Dia  semata  mata  dari  dunia  asing ,     memiliki  keindahan  dan  keajaiban  yang  luar  biasa  di  mana  manusia  pasti  tidak  berpuas  hati ;     hampir  seolah - olah  dia  tidak  sesuai  berada  di  Bumi  yang  agak  biasa ,     tetapi  Magnus  percaya  yang  dia  patut  bersinggah  di  antara  para  malaikat  di  syurga .          ❝     Anda  penuh  dengan  KEJUTAN ,     bukan ,     Encik .   Wyllt ??     ❞          Dia  hanya  memerhati  sebagai  gantian  ucapan ,     ketika  tangan  dia  menjangkau     &&     meluncurkan  jaket  dia .     Walaupun  selepas  dia  menyelesaikan  tugasnya ,     namun ,     Magnus  menunggu ,     mata  coklat  bertemu  dengan  warna  biru  sambil  jantung  Merlin  terus  memukul  di  bawah  telapak  tangannya  dengan  menindas  sinchronicity  dengan  sendiri .     Hanya  selepas  dia  boleh  bertutur  sekali  lagi ,     tidak  mahu  mengalihkan  pandangannya .          ❝     Bukannya  saya  mengadu ,     tentu  saja .     Saman  ini  menjadi  anda .     ❞
