Okay, nerds! With all the MHA 426 spoilers floating around, I humbly offer you this to hopefully help soothe the ache. Still on the bittersweet side, but more sweet than bitter, and Mon-chan and Shiggy are there! And it's one in a series.
What? Did you think dying would stop the League from shenanigans? Never. 😉Here's the link to AO3, and the fic itself is below.
It's All About the People You're With
Much to his displeasure, Dabi wakes up after his final confrontation with his family. However, he finds that his family aren't the only ones waiting for him. Shigaraki is there to offer him a choice, and he brought his dog Monchan with him!
For the first time in his life, Dabi was cold. He was cold and everything else was dark and velvet soft silence.
Fuckin’ bliss.
So naturally, he was pretty damned irritated when the curtains of darkness began to pull back, letting in the far more familiar and very unwelcome sensation of pain.
Oh fuck, he hurt.
Not everywhere. A lot of his body felt numb, but not the floaty numbness of really good painkillers. No, this was the numbness that said, ‘hope you waved bye-bye to your nerve endings, you deep fried dumbass!’
Well, good riddance, pity he couldn't get rid of all of them.
Dabi tried to move, to shift his body to a new position—as if that could possibly make it hurt less— but couldn’t. If he believed in a god he would curse them right now. Was he still on fire? Fuck it hurts! It hurts. It hurts so damn much! He couldn't swallow down the groan that crawled its way up his throat and dribbled out between his teeth.
That groan apparently flipped a previously unknown switch, because as soon as the miserable little noise escaped, a wave of sound struck him and sent him reeling.
Going from a blanket of silence to freaking bedlam knocked loose whatever tenuous grip he had on coherent thought, and he flailed around in a panic. What the hell was going on? What had happened? What was happening right now? Where was he?
When Dabi got himself back together, he at least had a new and different pain to focus on whenever he wanted a distraction from the burns! A migraine! What a fan-fucking-tastic bonus! More important: he could hear voices. Actual voices. Not just the one in his head that made smartass comments. The voices made him curious enough to pay better attention. He couldn't make sense of them—everything was weirdly muffled and distant— then one loud, all-too-familiar voice broke through the general hubbub and scratched nails down the chalkboard of his soul.
"You said there was no hope!”
“Mr. Todoroki, we discussed this possibility. Occasionally, a patient will continue to breathe on their own for some time after being taken off the ventilator. They may even make sounds. That does not change the inevitable outcome. I know this was a difficult choice, but—”
Dabi lost track of what the whiney voice was saying. He didn't care anyway. Fury overtook his confusion and irritation, fresh pain flaring across his body as his quirk tried to activate. For fuck’s sake! He hadn’t managed to take out his piece of shit father? After all that had happened?! What was the damned point then?! All his planning and suffering, all the bodies—including his own!— sacrificed, the League broken up… was it all for nothing?! He wanted to scream and weep and beat his fists against the floor like a child throwing a tantrum. It wasn't fair! It wasn't fair that he'd lost everything, only for that motherfucker to survive!
Heh … motherfucker. Literally.
The thought came from so far out of right field it left him stunned for a second, then his body jerked as he tried to laugh. Oh, now that was a whole new world of misery, and the motion clearly set off a fresh clamor with a frantic edge to it, but he didn't mind this time. Yeah, calling his father a motherfucker was stupid, but sometimes you needed a stupid joke the way you needed junk food. Right now, a laugh was just the thing he needed to pull himself that little bit farther into real consciousness.
Dabi couldn't laugh, but he could open his eyes.
Hey, I still have eyelids. Neat.
Felt like they were attached to weights though, and once he got them open, everything was a haze of colors and vague shapes. Well, he couldn't really complain, since he’d kind of thought, what with all the fire and ice getting tossed around, that the water in his eyes would be frozen solid or boiled away. Blurry vision was better than raisins for eyeballs.
“He opened his eyes!”
The shriek, while sounding like it came through a layer of cotton, made him wince away. The blurs around him burst into disorienting motion and the noise swelled into a cacophony, forcing him to shut his eyes again as he fought back another moan of pain. Fuck, why couldn't his ears have been scorched off? Wasn’t it bad enough his insides still burned and ached, but then these jerks had to make it worse with their gabble?
He tried to shout them down, tell them to shut up and get out! He was a fucking A-ranked villain, dammit! Have some fucking respect!
All that came out was a hissing sound.
His throat and mouth felt more like sandpaper than flesh, and there was something wrong, more wrong than usual, with his face.
"He’s trying to talk!”
“Oh my god– Toya! Toya! Can you hear us?”
“Nii-san!”
Shit, did they have to sound so excited? Something wet and cool was pressed against his mouth, and he couldn't help his relieved whimper as it rehydrated the strip of jerky currently serving as his tongue (eyelids, ears, and tongue had all survived? Holy shit!), and damped the fire in his throat. It took him two more tries, but he finally managed to whisper, “Shut… up. Fuckin’... noisy.”
He didn’t recognize his own voice. Every word crackled like radio static and was horribly slurred, almost to the point of incomprehension. Shit. My lips. I guess those did burn away after all. Three out of four’s not bad though.
It didn’t seem to matter to the people around him. They laughed and sobbed, and he felt hands on him, even through the pain and numb areas. Cold hands, which felt nice against charred skin, and a large hand that burned almost as hot as fire kept running across his head over and over. Dabi wanted to knock them all away, but he was exhausted. Whatever rush of energy had brought him back here was running out, and he was so tired.
Tired down to his blackened bones.
Opening his eyes again, he tried to look around. Still blurry. Lots of white though, so, hospital? Why was he here? Why were they wasting time and medicine on a wreck of a villain? They sure were kicking up a lot of fuss about something. He could see people-shaped blurs wearing white running around like there was some kind of emergency. He wished he could roll his eyes, but that was too difficult. Idiots.
In a world of motion, the eye is naturally drawn to stillness, and so his gaze fell on the figure in the open doorway.
“Dog.” The word was startled out of him.
“What?”
“Did he say dog?”
“Toya, baby, what did you say?”
Cold fingers touched his cheek, and he answered without thinking, “There's... a dog...”
A rush of confused whispers around him, as if they couldn’t see the freaking dog right in front of them. It was the damndest thing though: The rest of the room and the occupants were nothing but splotches of colors to him, but the dog was perfectly clear, practically haloed in high definition. Some type of medium sized brown dog, a shiba inu or corgi maybe. It sat as if waiting for something, and even from across the room he could tell its eyes were a warm, melting brown. He wondered idly if its fur was as soft as it looked.
“Her name’s Mon.” The new voice cut easily through the babble, and was familiar to Dabi as his own quirk. He felt the muscles in his face pull as they tried to form into a smirk.
“Tomura… Shigaraki… You crusty bitch.”
“Shigaraki? Did he say Shigaraki?”
“I heard crusty bitch.”
“What?!”
His insult was answered by a low chuckle. “I don’t want to hear that from the guy who looks like a hotdog that fell into the campfire.”
His former boss stepped into view and Dabi had to take a moment. Shigaraki looked… normal. Last time Dabi had seen the man, he’d been somewhere between a ‘roided up megavillain and a goddamn eldritch abomination. Now he was back to what he called his “rogue build,” all slender limbs and lean muscle, made for speed and close quarters combat. His mop of white hair was cut above his shoulders, and there was no corpse hand hiding his face. Garnet colored eyes were almost fond as they ran over Dabi’s bandaged form. “You look like shit.”
“Fuck you…” Dabi mumbled, ignoring the sudden flutter of happiness(?) he got from the familiar exchange of insults. He hadn’t realized how much he’d missed the easy banter of the League. “What… What are you… doing here… Shig?”
“Oh, you must be feeling all soft and mushy to use a nice nickname,” Shigaraki teased, tucking his hands into the pockets of his long black coat and stalking forward. The (theoretical) doctors bustling around seemed to avoid him without effort, but none reacted to the villain or the dog that trotted happily alongside him.
“Go die, ugly,” Dabi repeated, or tried to. It was hard to get enough air to talk. He ignored the urgent voices and insistent touches trying to get his attention, and focused on his boss’s face.
“I already did, you dick.”
Dabi sneered, even as his stomach dropped. Shigaraki had lost? It seemed impossible, and yet… “Look good… for a dead man.”
“I look better than you do for sure, bacon boy.”
It really wasn’t fair how true that was. Dammit, he honestly couldn’t call Shigaraki crusty anymore! The scars on his eye and lip were still there, but the lines around his eyes and the splits in his lips seemed less like flakey, dried skin and more like weathered, cracked stone. His neck wasn’t all scratched and scarred up either. The brat looked healthy. It was disgusting. Dabi tried to flip him off, but couldn’t lift his arm. He couldn’t even make his fingers move, so he settled for, “Still prettier… than you…”
Chuckling, Shigaraki stopped next to Dabi’s bed and gave him a small smile. He’d never seen such a calm smile on Tomura Shigaraki’s face. It made his chest hurt for some reason. “Keep telling yourself that, you emo bastard. To answer your first question, Dabi, I’m here because I’m the leader, and you’re one of my League.”
Dabi scoffed. “Didn’t you hear… what I told the… damn pigeon? Don’t care… about the League. Never did.”
“Oh, I did hear about that,” Shigaraki said, and his tone made Dabi stiffen and his eyes widen. Oh Shit. Something started frantically beeping, probably his heart monitor. He'd forgotten that Shigaraki could be a scary son of a bitch when he wanted to be.
“Toya? Son, what’s wrong?”
“What’s happening to him?!”
“And I expect you’ll get an earful from Toga and Jin, but that doesn’t matter in the end.” Shigaraki softened, voice turning from wrathful to patient, which was annoying coming from a spoiled brat like him. “I never asked you to give up your own goals when you joined the League. In fact, I recall saying specifically that my comrades could do as they pleased. But, Dabi, for someone who didn’t care, you sure stuck around for a long time.” He smirked and Dabi wanted to punch his stupid, uncrusty face. “You could’ve left after All For One was captured. Hell knows that I was a mess and the League was barely holding together. No way you could’ve known that we could help further your goals. There was no reason for you to stay.”
Not exactly true. He’d only stuck around out of a sense of obligation, because he’d found out that Shigaraki had emptied his personal bank accounts on equipment and supplies for his League, as well as on bribes and informants… and had spent a large chunk of that money on a reputable healer for Dabi’s head injury and to redo his staples before they got infected. He could’ve been permanently crippled, or even killed, if it hadn’t been for Shigaraki. There was a debt owed, and even the underworld had rules. You paid back your debts. Dabi wanted to explain, but his throat hurt too much to go into it all.
He got the feeling that Shigaraki guessed what he was thinking though, because the other man continued, “You helped us avenge Magne.”
Maybe small words? He’d managed those before. Talking was painful, but Dabi was used to pain, and he couldn’t just let Shigaraki ramble on like this without replying. The little shit would get cocky and start thinking he was right!
“Magne… was nice…” Too fucking nice. She flirted with him and it was really damned irritating (and embarrassing), but Magne had been kind. She really lived up to her title of ‘Big Sis.’ She made everyone feel wanted and welcome, and that complete acceptance had fed a hungry part of him he thought had starved to death years ago. “Overhaul… deserved… it.”
“Mhm. You helped us with the MLA and Deika City, became one of my generals.”
“Geten’s… a bigger bitch… than you. Easy. And general… is a cushy job.”
Shigaraki reached down to rub Mon’s ears. He used all five fingers, and she sighed in appreciation, leaning into his touch. His eyes never left Dabi’s face, though. “You cried for Twice.”
He couldn’t deny it. Tried to anyway. “Not… for him.” Everything he’d said to Hawks was true. Twice would’ve tipped the scales in the League’s favor, in Dabi’s favor. His dream would’ve come true with Twice’s help. So he’d wept blood for that lost dream… and for a lost friend. For someone who had loved and trusted with a completely open heart, stabbed in the back while trying to save his friends. It still hurt, dammit! And Shigaraki, that fucker, kept right on talking, twisting the knife.
“When the war broke out, you came when Gigantomachia was sent to fetch you because you knew that I’d woken up early. You knew that I was surrounded by heroes, and that the operation wasn’t complete.”
“Opportunity,” Dabi muttered hopelessly. It had been the perfect opportunity to confront his father.
“Two birds with one stone, Dabi. You still distracted the heroes enough to give the rest of us a chance. You saved me, even if it was indirectly or by accident," Shigaraki insisted. “ And you stuck around after that debacle too. There was nothing there for you, really. You did leave for awhile, but you came back to check on me and Spinner. For someone who didn’t care, whose goal lay elsewhere, you sure seemed concerned.”
“Nowhere… else… to go.” Why did he keep nagging?
“You found Toga and torched her old house, told her to smile, encouraged her to keep going, and gave her some of Twice’s blood.”
Dabi didn’t have anything to say to that. Shigaraki patted Dabi’s leg and it felt more solid than the hands shaking him, the same way Shigaraki’s voice was close and the others’ distant as they called his name. "I'm fine," he mumbled to the voices, his head falling to one side. Jeez. Would he ever get some peace?
“Dabi,” his name brought his wandering focus back to Shigaraki, “We already know you’re an asshole. You don’t have to try and talk me out of bringing you back.” He leaned closer and met Dabi’s eyes, bloody red to clouded crystal. “I see you, Dabi. We see you, Dabi. We’ve always seen you. We want you anyway. Magne, Jin, Toga, Spinner, Kurogiri… they’re all waiting for you.”
Those words hit him like a punch to the gut, wringing out a soft sound of pure longing that he didn’t know he was capable of making.
Arms— hot and cold, slim and thick, both of them ghostly— wrapped around him. He suspected them of trying to comfort him, but he didn’t need comfort. Shigaraki wanted him. The League wanted him. They didn’t care that he wasn’t perfect, that he had been born to be a failure, that he was a broken, twisted caricature of a human being. Knowing he was wanted despite all that… it healed a wound in his soul that had been bleeding as long as he could remember, and suddenly it didn’t matter that Endeavor was still alive.
The League wanted him. They were waiting for him.
And he was tired.
So very, very tired.
Even so, he mustered up the strength for one last bit of snark. “So… you… expect me to… just, what? … Waltz into Hell… with you?”
Shigaraki raised his eyebrows. “You could stay, if you'd rather.” His eyes flicked to the blurry people around Dabi, lingering on the ones who seemed to be embracing him. “Your family would prefer that, I think. They seem really upset. It’s your choice, though. It’s always been your choice, Dabi. We'll still be waiting if you want to stay for a little while longer.”
Dabi considered for less than a second. “Let’s go, Duster.” He’d been toying with that nickname for months, now seemed like the perfect time to use it. Judging by the pleased light in Tomura’s eyes, he was right.
Grinning, Tomura held out his hand.
Dabi felt something shift inside him, the pain and numbness retreating, replaced by a kind of pleasant, tingling feeling. But when he tried to reach out for Tomura’s hand, he could barely raise his arm an inch off the blanket. He tried again, and still couldn’t. Sudden frustration and anguish made his already dry eyes sting.
“I can’t reach you! Tomura! Fuck!” Why couldn’t he do this? Just this one, last, final thing?! Why was it so hard to reach the things he wanted the most? “I… I c-can’t…”
Then his arm was being lifted, supported gently by someone else.
Surprised, he looked in the direction of the red and white blur that held his damaged arm so tenderly. The blur wavered and came into sudden, sharp focus. It was Shoto. Shoto, his youngest brother, his father’s perfect masterpiece, the kid he barely knew but had tried his best to kill… and Shoto was crying. Crying so hard he had snot coming out his nose and his pretty porcelain skin was all blotchy. The sight made Dabi chuckle, even as it reminded him of Toga’s sad eyes.
“Hey, little hero, don’t cry,” he said, and found that speaking didn’t hurt. He sounded like his old self too, the words clear and firm. Still raspy, but that was just the way he talked. “`S like I told Himiko. It doesn't matter whether we laugh or cry, the sun’ll still rise tomorrow... so you should choose to smile, baby brother.” Shoto’s lips wobbled as he tried to obey. Dabi smiled back and thought it probably looked like a nightmare, but for once, he felt genuinely happy and didn’t hold himself back. “That’s better.”
Dabi was distracted from any reply his brother might’ve made as a cool, dry hand wrapped around his, and pulled him to his feet.
His boots hit the hospital floor with a satisfying thump. Dabi stretched, reveling in the absence of constant pain and exhaustion. He felt amazing. Like he could run a mile in a split second or fight a tiger quirkless if he wanted to! A quick survey showed that he was wearing his old villain coat, a clean white t-shirt that actually fit, and leather pants that felt soft as butter. And he had his right arm back!
Tomura reached up and playfully flicked a finger against the staples on his cheek. “Still stapled together, even after all that?”
“`Cause I’m not Toya,” he explained, snapping his fingers to cause a spark and delighting in the painless blue flame. Finally, finally, his quirk was truly his and the blue glow had never been more beautiful. Reluctantly, he let the flame die and faced his boss again. “Not Toya any more than you are Tenko. Toya's a part of me, but this is… me. This is who I chose. I’m Dabi. Dabi has staples and scars and a fuck ton of piercings.” It was true, and it felt so good to be comfortable in his own skin.
Tomura nodded, smiling. “Black hair suits you better anyway. Freaking emo.”
“So speaks the dead man wearing a long black coat, with a black shirt, black pants, and red fucking sneakers,” he taunted. “Who’s the real emo, huh?”
“Shut up. I bet I can still dust you like this, matchstick.”
“Bring it on, mophead.”
They were grinning at each other and Mon frolicked around them both, overjoyed. Dabi reached down and gave her head a pat, finding that she was just as soft as she looked. “Where to now?” he asked Tomura. In answer, Tomura went to a door Dabi hadn’t noticed before and opened it. He smiled over his shoulder, then stepped though, vanishing from sight. Dabi followed eagerly, but paused at the threshold and, despite himself, looked back.
There they were, no longer hazy or muffled, though they were somehow still far away:
Enji, Rei, Fumiyu, Natsu, Shoto… his whole family, all of them clustered around a sad, empty vessel, holding it tight and crying like the world was ending. Strangely, seeing his own broken body was less distressing than watching his mother press teary kisses to its bandaged face.
Mon licked his hand and looked up at him with those big, melting eyes. She whined a little and he smiled at her. No wonder Tomura had her with him. She was a very good girl. “I’m okay, Monchan. Just wish they… that they knew,” knew that he wasn’t hurting anymore, that he was going to be with friends, that he was ready to leave all the old aches and sorrows behind, “But I guess they’ll figure it out eventually, huh? Maybe I can tell them myself one of these days.” Not today though.
Dabi turned away from his family for the last time and stepped through the door.
As soon as he was through, he knew where he was. Their first villain hideout, the bar where they’d both lived and worked out of for months. So familiar, but changed. The wood floorboards beneath his feet still creaked and he could smell alcohol and something baking, but there were no booths or tables. Instead, right along with the bar and the stools, there was a comfortable looking couch and two armchairs, a coffee table, and a tv. That was all he got a look at before two bodies hit him and took him down.
“Dabi! It’s about time!”
“We missed you so much!”
Trying to breathe, he looked down at the two people trying to crush his ribs. Toga and Jin, of course, who else? Both of them with big anime tears streaming down their faces. “Can’t breathe!” he gasped, attempting to wiggle free. They loosened their hold enough for him to suck in some air, but didn’t let him get up. They looked different, of course, but like it had been for him, it was as if someone had peeled away their outer layers to show the real person beneath.
Jin wore his villain costume, because he had been happiest being a member of the League, but he had no mask and there was no scar on his face. When he smiled, it was the same wide, happy thing it had always been. Toga had abandoned her school uniform, and was instead in something pink and silky, with bits that were black and sparkly, her hair left loose down her back.
He ran his fingers through that mass of blonde waves. The changes suited her. “Hi, princess. You look cute.” She beamed at him, showing her fangs, longer and bigger than in life. He was struck by a wave of affection. Cute little vampire bat. Then he looked at Jin, not Twice anymore, and his heart clenched. He remembered a red feather and a burst of blood. “Jin… I’m sorry—”
Jin cut him off by giving him an extra hard squeeze. “Don’t be! I’m sad I couldn’t be with you guys longer, but I am so happy for the time I had. I’m the luckiest guy in the world to have you all with me still!”
After more hugs and tears, they finally got off him, though Mon took the opportunity to give him a doggy kiss before he could scramble to his feet. “Gross,” he muttered, wiping at his face.
“Probably the cleanest your face has been in ages, patchwork,” teased a voice.
“Can it, gecko,” he told Spinner, and flipped him off. The lizard heteromorph grinned at him from his spot on the couch, and returned the gesture in good humor before scooting over to make room for Tomura and Mon. Spinner hadn’t changed much, just a few details here and there, mostly in the lack of Stain iconography. Dabi had wondered if he’d find Spinner looking human, and was glad the man finally felt happy with his looks.
“Hey there, big guy, no greeting for me?”
This time, he did a double take at the woman sitting on the floor among a pile of pillows, which made everyone else snicker at him. “Magne?” he asked, a little unsure. She laughed, and the laugh he did recognize. “Holy shit, Magne, you look…”
“Fantastic! I know, darling.” She flipped her hair over her shoulder and gave him a lecherous wink. “Why don’t you come give Big Sis a little kissy kiss?”
“Uh, hard pass,” he said, edging his way around her. Jin and Toga jeered at him, plopping down on pillows he was sure hadn’t been there a second ago, and Toga holding up a manicure kit that was definitely pulled out of nowhere. Dabi didn’t question it though. The three of them were happy, doing each other's nails and chatting, so where the kit came from didn’t matter.
He made it to the bar unmolested and unmanicured, and squinted at the stranger there as he took a seat on his accustomed stool. The man behind the bar was youngish, dressed in a blue martial arts Gi and a brown bomber jacket, a bandage across the bridge of his nose. His hair was insane, like someone had stuck a cloud of cotton candy to his head or something. “The fuck are you?”
“I’m Oboro Shirakumo!” the man chirped, sounding waaaaay too perky for a stranger in what was supposed to be a villain hideout. Dabi eyed him and wondered if he could actually use his fire here and roast this cotton candy loser. Shirakumo seemed to sense his homicidal intentions and quickly added, “Kurogiri! I was Kurogiri for awhile! You might remember me?" He motioned toward his wild blue hair. "Still with the cloud theme, but more purple and black and swirly?”
Dabi’s confusion vanished. He had heard something about Kurogiri being a nomu, but hadn’t paid it too much attention, laser focused as always on killing Endeavor. “Weren’t you a hero student when you died?” he demanded. “What are you doing here?”
“I was also Tomura’s caretaker and protector!” Shirakumo reminded him, and shot Tomura a fond smile. Tomura returned the smile almost shyly. “He's my boy, and dying didn't change that. Anyway, I’m waiting for my own friends to make it to this side, so I figured I might as well make myself useful and keep an eye on you miscreants.” He smiled a big, sunshine smile, and Dabi let out a huff. Figures even here they couldn’t shake off the heroes. Whatever. Shirakumo or Kurogiri or whoever he was… he was half-villain and that would do for now.
“So,” he asked, leaning his elbows on the counter and asking the really important question, “can you mix a drink as good as Kurogiri could?”
“I sure can. You want your usual?”
Dabi blinked at him. “You remember?”
Shirakumo’s smile softened. “I do.”
“Then yes, please. I just died. I think I deserve a drink.”
Laughing, Shirakumo agreed and turned to do just that. While he waited, Dabi entertained himself by watching the game Tomura and Spinner were playing. Eventually, though, he had to ask, “Where’s Mr. Compress? He’s the only one missing, right?”
“Mhm,” Tomura hummed, concentrating hard as Spinner cursed him for killing his character.
“Mister Showman’s gotta make a grand entrance!” Magne cooed, then giggled. “Who would’ve thought he’d be the last one?”
“Me,” Dabi said dryly. “He was always better at hiding than fighting.” He accepted his drink from Shirakumo with a nod. “What happens when he comes? Anyone know?”
Tomura paused the game and turned so he could see the room, running his eyes over each of them. “Whatever it is, we’ll decide together. Whether that’s us storming Hell or crashing Heaven, or even haunting Disneyworld for shits and giggles… we’ll stay together this time.”
“And we get to decide that?” Dabi pressed. He had been sure that, if there was an afterlife, he’d be giving the Devil the finger on his way down to the pits. Being allowed to have his friends seemed a little too good to be true.
“What comes next isn’t one-size-fits-all, you know,” Jin said unexpectedly, sounding very sure of himself. “There’s no checklist of good or bad, no racking up points either way. We’re not good people, we’re villains, but we’re not all bad either. Not all the choices were ours to make. And yes, we’ll be together, because we’re a family and Love is too strong a tie to break easily, and not a tie whoever is running this operation wants to break. Love is the whole point of living, you know? Why would it be taken from us when we worked so hard and lost so much? For most of us, the League is our one good thing. We can keep our one good thing.”
“That was so beautiful, Jin,” Toga said, her golden eyes shining.
“Thanks! I have no idea where all that came from!”
Everyone took a minute to absorb that little speech, and Dabi found himself relaxing back against the counter. His gut told him that Jin was right; that whatever came next, they’d be together, and that was all he cared about. He’d spent almost his whole life alone except for his obsession, and he’d resisted opening himself up to his friends like he should have. He wouldn’t make that mistake again. This time, he'd hold onto his League with both hands and burn whoever tried to take them away, be they God, Devil, or in-between.
Contentment washed over him at the decision, an emotion echoed on the faces of the League. It seemed they were all in agreement then. When Sako finally arrived, they'd be right back in step with each other, no matter where their path went. (Personally, when the time came to choose a path, he’d vote for storming Hell. That sounded like a party he could get behind.)
Sipping his drink, his elbow hit something on the bar top. It was a book, some young adult novel he vaguely remembered enjoying.
He’d never gotten to finish it.
Opening to the first pages, he took another sip and started reading. Behind the bar, Shirakumo smiled and cleaned the glass tumblers. On the floor, Magne, Jin, and Toga giggled and gossiped. Spinner and Tomura laughed and cursed, Mon yapping whenever Tomura got really excited, the music from the game a pleasant background. All that was missing was Compress’s soft humming as he practiced his slight of hand in the ratty armchair. Dabi realized just then that he was actually happy, and silently reveled in the sensation.
In death, same as life, it's all about the people you're with.
Reblog if you enjoyed! Thanks for reading!

All you can do is giggle at the wet spot on the front of his sweats and the humiliated crack in his voice. "Did you seriously jizz your pants?" You snort cruelly. "We were barely even making out!"
"D-Don't laugh! Fuck!" He scolds, covering himself as he awkwardly maneuvers off the bed. "Fuck's sake, cut me some slack, I've never done this before!"
"Awe, don't get all pissy!" You snicker, watching him waddle to the bathroom. "It's fine that you're a no pump chump, really! It's cute, actually!"
"I'm so glad you find this amusing," He grumbles, cleaning himself and dropping his sweats, walking out in just boxers and an old t-shirt. "'Cause I sure as hell don't." He ranted while tossing through a hamper to find a clean-ish pair of pants, having to do the sniff test on nearly everything.
"You really should clean your room, ya know? Maybe you'd actually get girls that way." You joke, lounging on his bed. "Girls don't like nasty rooms, dude."
He rolled his eyes, cheeks still pink. "Are you saying I don't get bitches?" He asked, stepping into a pair of pajama pants.
"More or less," You smirk at the irritated scowl he presented. "Also, don't call women bitches if you ever plan on changing that."
"All women are bitches," He says, turning back to you with a cocky grin. "And if I don't get any, why are you in my bed?"
"I felt bad for you, you're like a wet cat." You deadpan, hiding the fact that his last words dripped with more sex appeal than even he intended. "And I like messing with virgins."
"Shut up," He grumbled, the wind taken from his sails. "I don't need your pity, I could pull if I wanted to. Just got better shit to do."
"You mean like edging to hentai while all your friends go out to party?" You sneer, eyes flickering to his computer, pump bottle of lotion sitting beside the monitor so obviously.
"Oh my god, I hate you, is there a point to all this torment?" He finally asks, pacing the room, ready to throw you out.
You smile sweetly, catching his eye. You look so inviting as you lean back in his bed on your palms. "Hey, creep?" You coo and he gulps. He used to hate when you called him that, but now it melts him. He's already crawling over you nervously, shaking like a leaf.
"Y-Yeah?" He asks through quivering lips, hard on painfully obvious. You smirk at his short refractory period.
"Let's try again, yeah? I won't tell anyone you're a minute man if you try and hold out as long as you for me can this time m'kay?"
"O-Okay!"

DOOMED SIBLINGS: THE TODOROKIS VS. THE FIRE NATION ROYAL FAMILY
I received an ask in my inbox about how Zuko doesn't owe Azula any forgiveness. Truthfully I wasn't even going to respond because this isn't an avatar blog, but then I watched this video.
Not only do I disagree with the basically everything in this video, but I am going to make the argument that both Zuko' and Azula's arcs are both incomplete with the way the show left the two of them in the final showdown.
In order to make my argument I'm going to compare Azula and Zuko's relationship in avatar to Shoto and Toya's relationship in My Hero Academia and use the latter as a more positive example.
Unnecessary Redemption Arcs
The common fandom opinion I want to argue against is this idea that Azula's ending is a perfect tragedy, and therefore doesn't need to be expanded upon. There's also a sentiment that redeeming Azula would somehow ruin the impact of this perfect tragedy.
I'm about to argue against both of these points.
Azula's arc doesn't work as a tragedy.
Because of this her arc is unsatisfying and unfinished.
I'm going to address the first bullet point but before that let me add another disclaimer. The reason why I think Azula's arc isn't an effectively written tragedy isn't because I like Azula.
Before we even get into the My Hero Academia comparison let me bring up something completely different. I do like Azula, but I like Terra Markov from Teen Titans a lot more and I would not change a thing about her tragic end.
AZULA'S ARC IS NOT A WELL-WRITTEN TRAGEDY
Terra in the comics is what a lot of people accuse Azula of being. She is stated in the text and by her creators to be an unfeeling sociopath. She was also never intended by her creators to be redeemed.
[About Terra] The very first time we see her, she’s trying to blow up the Statue of Liberty. It’s just that all the fans assumed because we went out of our way to make her cute — but not too cute, with the buck teeth and everything — everyone would assume that she was gonna become good by the end and that was never the case. First thing, we made a promise that day that we would never renege on our view that she’d never become good. It’s sometimes hard to do that with characters you like. You want them to become good or something like that. But we never liked the character enough—because we knew what we were doing with her—we never allowed ourselves to fall for the character. Because that’s bad. That’s bad storytelling. You’re doing what you want as a fan at that particular point, not as the creators. T
Now let me clarify, both creators of New Teen Titans say some nasty things about Terra and don't recognize her sexual abuse, but here's the thing. You don't have to read a story 100% the way the author intended, sometimes the story says one thing and the text says something different.
I am going to use Judas Contract as an example of a story where the character from the start was never intended to be redeemed and why that's a positive in this case.
Terra is a teenage girl, the bastard daughter of the king of Markovia and a random American woman who presumably has had no stable home her entire life because she's working as a mercenary at fifteen. She teams up with a man that is in his mid fifties and even starts a sexual relationship with him (this is statutory rape she cannot consent) and Deathstroke uses her to infiltrate the Teen Titans and learn as much as possible.
Terra is sent to live with the team and spy on them for several months. The whole time she only ever engages with them in a fake spunky persona, and never shows her real cutthroat self. She leads Beast Boy on in a fake romance to make him trust her and secure her place on the team. The way you'd usually expect this arc to go is that Terra would grow fond of the team and be torn in her loyalties.
Yeah, that never happens.
Terra loathes the Titans. In fact she's developed a superiority complex about her meta human abilities and she doesn't understand why anyone would use their powers to help others. She despises the concept of superheroes in general, and because of that never bonds with any of the Titans. Her feelings never change from start to finish, because her creators intentionally wrote her as a character that can't be redeemed.
Tumblr media
Terra is written to be a psychopath, but even with that intention in mind there are scene that shows a greater range of emotions. She has what could amount to a trauma flashback when Beast Boy too aggressively flirts with her and tries to kiss her and she reacts violently, trying to bury him under the earth.
Let's go ahead and interpret Terra as what is used as the fictional definition of a "sociopath" that is someone who feels no bonds with other people, someone with shallow emotions and someone devoid of guilt. Even if we interpret her that way, her story is still meant to be read as a tragedy.
Terra succeeds in her mission of infiltrating the Titans. Slade captures most of them, and the only remaining member Dick Grayson goes missing. Dick Grayson then unites with Slade's son Jericho, and the two of them team up in order to rescue the rest of their friends.
Tumblr media
Even after all she's done the Titans try to make pleas to Terra during the final battle, which she not only rejects but responds to with violence. Which only confirms what I said above, Terra never grew to love them, she never regretted her actions, she only ever engaged with them with lies.
(Terra always lies, Terra always lies, Terra always lies).
Terra is declared by Raven to be devoid of emotions: "Her thinking is unlike ours. She feels no true love or hate. Her soul is corrupt. What she does is done without remorse."
Even after Raven declares this, however she still pleads with Terra to stop because she's going to hurt herself. Terra feels Slade betrayed her because he favored his son Jericho over her, so she decides to take both Slade and the Titans down. As the Titans fight her she begins to mentally fall apart ignoring their appeals to her and lashing out at everything around her. Eventually she makes one last attempt to everything around her, but the Titans escape and she only manages to bury herself.
At no point in the fight do the Titans give up on trying to reach her even as she's loudly screaming how much she hates them. Even after she's buried and it looks like she's dead, Gar and Donna both try desperately to dig her up on the slim hope she's still alive. When they find the body they even give her a funeral afterwards, even though they all think that Terra was beyond redemption.
Even the prose narration that accompanies her death is incredibly melancholy and bemoans her fate, at the same time as it calls her a outright sociopath.
There's no reasoning with her now. However slim, whatever sanity Tara Markov possessed is gone. Now there is only primal hatred! Hatred born, nurtured, and fanned. Hatred that festers and grows without care, without feeling, without plan. her pursed lips part and the sounds which echoes force are garbled and inhuman. Hot, boiling blood gushes wildly from the earth's open wounds, its skin fractures and cracks, and if a world could cry, it surely would. Her name is Tara Markov and she is little more than sxiteen years old, and due to the fault of no one but herself she is insane. No one taught her to hate, yet she hates without cause, without reason. No one taught her to destroy, yet she destroys with glee, with relish. Don't look for reasons which do not exist, plainly Tara Markov is what she is, and she has taken a great power and made it as corrupt as she. Hers was the power over the earth itself she could have brought life to deserts, hat to the frozen tundra, food to sraving millions. She could have damned raging rivers, and tunneled water to packed lands dry and dead. her powers were limited only by the mind which controlled them. A mind which sought not hope, not love, not life, but death.
If you go with the text that she is just a sociopath beyond redemption who hates and hates and hates for no reason, the narrative still mourns her because a sixteen year old with her whole life ahead of being consumed by hatred and then dying because of it is in fact sad.
If you read into the subtext then you can argue that the events of the story, contradicts what the narration is telling us. Terra is being sexually groomed and groomed as a child soldier by a man who is much older than her, even if she thinks he's a partner he clearly has all power in the relationship.
If you think about it that way then Terra is the ultimate bad victim. She doesn't cry and call for help as a victim of sexual abuse, instead she tries to claim power for herself, she manipulates, and she destroys any chance she had for a genuine relationship because she only sees all relationships as transactions she can gain or lose from.
Even if you only go with the first interpretation, the narrative still remains tragic because the Titans themselves did not want to give up on her, they did not want to watch this sixteen-year-old girl destroy herself. They never stop reaching out for her and it doesn't work, because there was no way out for Terra but death.
Here's the thing I don't think Terra's status as a sexual victim automatically means an ending where she dies is offensive. It reflects a reality that victims like Terra often go unseen because they don't present their victimhood in palatable ways, and by the time anyone notices it's far too late. Sometimes tragedies are meant to reflect a reality where many people do not get saved.
There's two reasons that Judas Contract works as a tragic story. Number one the creators planned Terra's ending right from the beginning. Which meant they never gave her any moment where she shows that she's redeemable. There's no genuine bond between her and the titans, no wrestling with the guilt of her actions, nothing.
Number two, Judas Contract is Terra's story from beginning to end. It begins with her betrayal of the Titans, and ends with her death. The death is also brought upon herself by her fatal flaw her hatred, which is what makes her the protagonist of a tragedy. Tragedies are stories where heroes are undone by their flaws. Terra also goes out on her own terms. She buries herself underneath her own rocks. Her death is a direct consequence of her inability to let go of her hatred. Terra's not fridged for anybody else's arc, she retains her agency until the exact moment of her death.
To simplify into bullet points, Judas Contract works because:
The creators thought out what they wanted to do with Terra.
Judas contract is Terra's story.
Now, getting to the part where we actually talk about Avatar, and I start complaining about that awful, awful video.
AZULA'S ARC IS NOT WELL THOUGHT OUT
I just went on a long tangent on how Terra, a character written to have no redeemable qualities can still be tragic. How the creators marked her as clearly doomed from the start, and how she brought about her end on herself, how there no redemption for Terra. How this girl had no real chance, and how regardless of the fact Terra is a lil baby sociopath her fall is still tragic because of how well structured the tragedy is surrounding her.
It's awful to kill off a sixteen year old victim of sexual abuse, but the ending just fits because Terra represents a certain type of bad, unsympathetic victim who doesn't get saved.
Azula's arc isn't as well structured. The ending does not fit. I'm going to start by refuting some points in the awful, awful video I did not like.
"Maybe it's okay if Azula's story ends where it does in the series we would separate how we would treat a real 14-year-old girl from a villain in a series, ad that's why any redemption arc isn't need i a story after all. A character needs of deserves a redemption arc when it becomes the most meaningful way to explore their character and place in the story, but a character deserving redemption usually comes before the story really needing it, and I don't think Azula's done anything to deserve it yet. They've got to exhibit some willingness and action to change..."
So the main reason I'm using Terra as my first example is because Terra is the kind of character that Hello Future Me is describing. Terra was written with the specific intention she'd never experience a change of heart, all of the friendships she makes with the Titans are fake, she very loudly experiences no remorse, or even self-reflection over what she is. Terra's pretty proudly a monster and she never experiences any kind of self-doubt or regret over what she's become.
I can disprove right away Hello Future Me's blanket statement (with no actual cited examples, just trust him guys) that Azula never did anything to hint she may deserve redemption. That suggests Azula is an entirely selfish character who uses, manipulates and thinks she's right and worst of all is comfortable being the way she is, and therefore incapable of doing the self-reflection necessary for change.
Azula does show the capacity to do selfless actions several times in the narrative, and even consider the feelings of others. There's the apology scene with Ty Lee and the way she interacts with her friends in general with the Beach where when she's not fighting in a war or trying to complete a mission for her father Azula 1) interacts with her friends in a normal way and 2) seems to express a desire to experience normal relationships not the hierarchical ones she's experienced all of her life.
However, that's not the example I'm going to use as her save the cat moment. I generally intend to interpret that as a sign that even though she treats Mai and Ty Lee as subordinates and that power she holds over them eventually leads to them leaving her, their friendship isn't just Azula abusing them and lording her authority over their heads 24/7.
No, Azula's save the cat moments all revolve around Zuko. Which is funny, because the entire fandom seems to regard Azula as Zuko's evil little sister who exists to do nothing but torment her.
The first and biggest is Azula deciding to bring Zuko home in Ba Sing Se, and telling a lie to her father that he was the one to slay the avatar.
Ozai: I am proud of you, Prince Zuko. I am proud because you and your sister conquered Ba Sing Se. I am proud because when your loyalty was tested by your treacherous uncle, you did the right thing and captured the traitor. And I am proudest of all of your most legendary accomplishment: you slayed the Avatar.
Zuko: [Shocked.] What did you hear? Ozai: Azula told me everything. She said she was amazed and impressed at your power and ferocity at the moment of truth. [Inspired partly by this post]
Now the show seems to regard this action as Azula being an evil temptress who is there to tempt Zuko back to her side with everything he thinks he ever wanted.
That's only if you regard it from Zuko's perspective.
Think for a moment from Azula's perspective. Number one, Azula is someone thoroughly indoctrinated into Fire Nation propaganda who measures her self-worth based on 1) military achievement and 2) her father's approval and assessment of her talents. In Azula's own logic (wrongheaded as it is) she's helping Zuko. She's bringing him back home with his place in the line of succession restored and his father's approval.
Azula doesn't benefit from this gesture at all, in fact if her father discovers the lie she has as much to lose as Zuko does.
Now Zuko insinuates that Azula only brought Zuko along and told her father that he was the one who killed the avatar so she could let him take the fall if the avatar turned out to be alive.
However, if you look at the actual order of events that doesn't make sense. Azula saw the avatar die, she didn't know about the spirit water, and therefore had no way of knowing Aang could come back. In fact, it's Zuko who 1) knew about the spirit water and 2) decides to keep the spirit water and the fact the avatar might have survived a secret that is throwing Azula under the bus. After all she has as much to lose as he did and instead of sharing that information with her he decides to keep it all to himself.
Now Azula does imply that if the avatar were to turn out to be alive all of Zuko's glory would dry up, but this is only after Zuko 1) throws accusations at her and 2) makes it's pretty clear he's lying to her putting her on the defensive.
This is also a scenario where Azula doesn't have much to gain by bringing Zuko back, if you look at it from her perspective. If Azula just lets Zuko rot in a ba sing se prison, then her claim to the throne is secure. With Zuko back he's restored in the line of succession. She also, when making the decision to invite Zuko to her side probably didn't need him for her plan to succeed.
There is a dramatic moment of Zuko choosing to side with Azula over Katara which turns the tide in Azula's favor, but Azula can't see into the future and therefore wouldn't be able to predict that happening. If you look at it from Azula's perspective she 1) successfully infiltrated the city, 2) already had the Dai Lee in her pocket. She likely already thought she had the city secure at this point so her decision to extend a hand out to Zuko is therefore likely motivated by selflessness instead of self-interest.
That's important because usually when Azula usually only gives her help to others if it also benefits her in some way. Azula might genuinely see her recruiting Mai and Ty Lee to her side as a member of the royal family extending her favor and giving them status and security in their positions but it has the underlying motivation of 1) she keeps them in a position to beneath her and therefore in her complete control.
Azula will interact with Mai and Ty Lee like friends on the surface, as long she maintains control over them, but if they do anything to something that displeases her she'll do anything to regain her control.
Mai: I thought you ran off and joined the circus. You said it was your calling. Ty Lee: Well, Azula called harder.
This is set up in Azula's very first interaction with Ty Lee. Azula greets her like an old friends, Ty Lee even seems happy to see her, but the second Ty Lee tries to say no to her Azula goes to extreme lengths to "persuade her". Azula's friendship with Mai and Ty Lee is an abusive friendship because there is a power differential and even if Azula feels genuine affection for them both it's clear they're not allowed to say no. Mai and Ty Lee are put into positions where it's in their best interest to please her, and live in fear of the consequences if they don't do just that.
Here's the thing, I'm not arguing that Azula didn't deserve any consequences for her actions. I'm arguing that the setup doesn't match her eventual ending. Azula is set up to have Mai and Ty Lee leave her from the very first scene that Azula interacts with Ty Lee. It's satisfying because the set up matches the pay off.
It's also tragic because it's Azula continuing the chain of abuse. The video isn't entirely wrong (which is why they came to the wrong conclusion frustrating).
Azula's fall is about how differenting parenting styles can a child. Ozai's affection is exchanged for being useful. Something Azula would go on to repeat with her friends, whereas Iroh's affection is something freely given with patience for imperfections and failures, something Zuko goes then on to repeat.
It's like... there it is it's so close. Here's the thing, Azula is set up for a tragic falling out with Mai and Ty Lee (and one she deserves) but the set up is different with Zuko. Azula's save the cat moment revolves around Zuko, and her genuine attempt to bring her brother home.
Yes, the first time Azula interacts with Zuko in season 2, she tries to take him home by force. However, by the ending of the season Azula's perspective on the matter has obviously changed because she begins by trying to bring him back as a prisoner, and by the end of the season invites him back as an equal.
There's no moment in Season 3 where Azula treats Zuko the way she does Mai and Ty Lee (unless Zuko provokes it first and puts her on the defensive) in fact most of her interactions are either them interacting normally (such as when Azula goes to find Zuko at their old beach house because she knows he'll be there and advises he leave instead of dwelling on their depressing memories) or Azula deliberately trying to look out for Zuko such as when she advises him not to go visiting with Uncle because it'll make others suspicious.
On the other hand, Zuko never at any point looks out for his sister the way Azula is demonstrated looking out for him. He doesn't say, try to tell her where he's going on the Day of Black Sun, or try to convince her the fire nation is wrong. There's a scene in the later part of Season 3 where Zuko is watching Azula fall to her death while sitting on a flying bison and not only sits there and does nothing about it, but sounds disappointed when she doesn't hit the ground and become an Azula Pancake.
That's pretty much the opposite of a save the cat moment. It's a "let the cat fall to their death" kind of moment.
Yes they were enemies at that point, but Zuko's the one who's supposed to learn that affection is something freely given with patience for imperfections and failures, something Zuko goes then on to repeat.
How exactly is he doing that in this scene?
The thing is... this setup doesn't have to be bad. Of course Zuko has trouble has trouble empathizing with Azula, he doesn't even think about sending a letter to Mai, Zuko's shown at this point to be like a healing abuse victim who's understandably focused on himself.
This in fact could be excellent set up with step 1) learning what genuine love and forgiveness is and 2) demonstrating those two things by applying it to others.
However, that's not where we got. We got Zuko watching his sister have a complete emotional breakdown, crying and screaming while chained to a grate and looking somewhat sad.
And once again to bring Terra into this, Terra is what Stay at Home and parts of fandom argue that Azula is. Terra screams at the top of her lungs how much she hates the Titans, how much she was always lying to them, and the Titans STILL try to reach Terra with words, try to de-escalate the conflict, when she's about to bring the rocks falling down on herself warn her she's going to hurt herself, and then when she's buried under rubble try to dig her out begging for her too still be alive.
Terra who's intentionally created by her writers to be as hatable as possible, is shown more compassion by the heroes in her ending than Zuko ever does to Azula. They also give Terra multiple opportunities to change until literally the very last minute, which Zuko doesn't do either.
What's set up is Azula has this save the cat moment with her brother, that Zuko is pretty much the only person she doesn't treat like a subordinate in the story (because she just like Zuko has a craving for familial love she tries to earn from her father). However, her ending with Zuko just taking her down doesn't fit that setup.
Azula's ending only fits if you consider her arc entirely from Zuko's perspective, which is the underlying issue. Azula's not the protagonist of her own tragedy, she's a plot object that's used to benefit Zuko's arc.
Azula's is written to have a downfall, the same way that Zuko loses everything at the ending of season 1 b/c of his inability to give up on the obsessive search for the avatar (and his father's love with it). Azula is written to be left by Mai and Ty Lee (this is the strongest point of writing when it comes to her since it comes from the beginning).
However, she's not written to be left completely alone and insane with the only empathy being shown is that her brother looks kinda sorta sad. That's only good if you view her as an object to further Zuko's arc, because isn't the ultimate culmination of Zuko beating his sister who has always been ahead of him at life? Azula needs to torn down completely without even some small glimpse of a hope of recovery so Zuko can be built up even moreor at least the writers of avatar seem to think so.
However, even Azula just existing for Zuko's growth and character development doesn't have to necessarily be a bad thing. This is where we get to MHA, which does the tragic siblings and the final Ag Ni Kai about 1000 times better with Shoto and Dabi.
THE GOOD
The comparisons between Shoto and Dabi to Zuko and Azula are made pretty often by the fandom. Shoto has a scar, Dabi has blue flames. Shoto has an arc about healing and learning what it means to be a hero, Dabi's arc is about self-destruction.
Dabi's not the center of his own story, he exists to foil Shoto and help Shoto reach the endpoint of his character development however that's not necessarily a bad thing. These are both two pairs of tragic siblings, the main difference is that MHA doesn't feel the need to tear down one sibling in order to build up the other. In fact, the final step to Shoto's arc is HELPING Dabi, not PUTTING HIM DOWN.
Not only that but the decision to help Dabi is a decision that Shoto makes on his own, and him going against the tide of a society that has already given up on Dabi and would much rather have Shoto shoot Dabi like a mad dog. Which makes the decision to do so even more powerful and emblematic of Shoto's growth.
Now you could say that Shoto and Zuko are too different to compare their arcs, Zuko has a redemption arc, and Shoto has what most people would probably term a healing arc. Shoto starts out the series as a hero.
However, this is what annoys me about the redemption arc debate. A redemption arc is really just a normal character arc. However, calling it redemption drags things like morality and forgiveness into the debate. if you take remove the discussion about moral philosophy both Zuko and Shoto have character arcs where they start the story defined entirely by their home situations and their father's abuse (hence why they have big obvious scars on their face), recover from their trauma, and go on to find an identity outside of their father and form healthy non-abusive connections with others.
In fact I'd see the theme of both arcs are the same, to literally find balance within themselves. Shoto is divided quite literally into right and left sides, fire and ice, and even seems to view himself as half of his father and half of his mother. Zuko is someone who's permanently marked and dishonored by the burn scar on his face. He suffers from an internal imbalance as well. Iroh says that Zuko is the descendant of both Roku and Sozin and therefore both pathways are open to him (but wouldn't that apply to Azula too). Zuko says to his father that the fire nation has destroyed the balance to the world and he's going to leave to assist the avatar in order to fix it.
Shoto's balance isn't just about fixing his internal trauma though, it's also about finding a balance between his family which has defined his entire life up until this point, and his desire to become his own hero not the hero his father groomed him into.
It's why the culmination of his arc is Shoto reaching out to save his family member Toya, because it's the ultimate balance in wanting to heal his family, and also the kind of hero he wants to be, someone who saves and brings peace to others instead of just violently putting down villains. He can bring peace to his family and become his own hero in one action.
However, let's go back to the beginning of Shoto's arc, because saving Toya as an endpoint to his arc is set up pretty early on.
Shoto's arc begins with Deku, a stranger breaking down Shoto's walls as an outsider in order to allow him to look past his own trauma and recall for the first time what he wanted outside of his resentment towards his father. This sets up the idea early on for Shoto that sometimes you need outside interference, help you didn't ask for, especially when you can't see outside of your own problems.
What Deku brings about ultimately is a change of perspective, Shoto's so hurt by the memory of his mother throwing boiling water in his face and everything that came after that he can't recall the memory of her telling him he could be who he wanted to be.
Tumblr media
But, you want to be a hero right?
Shoto takes away two things from this arc, sometimes you need help even when you're not asking for it, and sometimes a change in respective is required in order to take the first step forward.
He goes to demonstrate these things multiple times, but here's two exaamples. The first Shoto demonstrates immediately after the tournament arc. When Iida is about to go down a dark path and commit a revenge killing on Stain. When, as a result of that IIDA is paralyzed and about to die in an alleyway, it's Shoto who both notices Midoriya and Iida are missing and shows up in the clutch. He's practicing the same thing that Deku taught him in the last arc: Giving help that's not asked for is what makes a true hero.
Tumblr media
He even mentions the second idea, that a small change in perspective can be all it takes to save someone, and he wants to do for Iida hat Deku did for him. His words are the one who convinces Iida to stand back up again when he's paralyzed.
Tumblr media
If you wanna stop this, then stand up. Because I've got one thing to say to you. Never forget who you want to become!
However Shoto's arc doesn't end here, because one of the major conflicts in MHA is that heroes don't pick and choose who to save and a true hero will give help even to those people who don't ask for it.
This is a point which further develops when Shoto's abusive father starts to show a change of heart at the end of the Pro Hero Arc. Shoto still holds his father accountable for what he did in the past, but he also acknowledges that if he had the capacity to change then so does Enji. This isn't about whether or not Enji is forgivable, this is an extension of what Shoto learned. Shoto originally believed he was controlled by the circumstances of his birth, that his fate was set in stone, but a change in perspective allows him to realize he can determine who he wants to be. So, Shoto is just applying what he's learned, Enji has the capacity to grow.
Tumblr media
There's one final piece of setup that I want to cover before showing how these separate dies all culminate in saving Dabi. Shoto's not only someone who has to find balance between his family and his desire to be a hero.
The theme of balance is written into the quirk itself. Enji basically practiced eugenics to create Shoto as his masterpiece. He noticed a flaw in his own quirk where he could only make his flames so hot without overheating. So he arranged a quirk marriage with Rei who possessed an ice quirk to create a hybrid ice and fire quirk that he could use to cool himself off to prevent him from overheating.
Enji only ever cared about the fire half of Shoto's quirk. His ice quirk only exists for his flames to grow stronger. This is shown when Enji is trying to force Shoto to learn all of his signature moves, because he only cares about Shoto's flame quirk. Shoto was created to carry on his father's legacy, and surpass him with an even more powerful flame quirk. Part of his character development is him learning how to use his quirk in his own way.
This is a theme that continues in the class training arc where Enji is still repeating the behavior of trying to force Shoto to learn his signature moves instead of considering what he wants at all, because still Shoto only exists in Enji's mind to carry on his legacy.

This all culminates in Toya's decision to save his brother. The first is his action in choosing to identify with his brother. If Shoto believes in his own capacity to change, and even his father's, then why would he deny Toya that same chance to change?
Tumblr media
The foiling between Shoto and Toya isn't supposed to reduce the two of them to "Shoto is the good one, and he's the bad one", but instead Shoto and Toya were both in a point where they were consumed by hatred and couldn't see any other path in life. Therefore if Shoto was able to change because someone gave him help when he didn't ask for it, then Toya not only has the capacity to change - but in order for Shoto to stick to his stated beliefs that the smallest of things can bring about a change in people he has to be the one to give his brother that chance to change.
It's not about whether Dabi is worthy or not, it's about the themes in Shoto's arc finally being paid off.
Shoto's identifying with Toya, and even parts where he tells Bakugo he'll make Toya sit down and make Toya tell him his favorite food indicate that from the beginning Shoto's intention was to find a way to stop Toya without killing him (which is what several of the adult heroes were encouraging him to do).
@stillness-in-green does a more succinct summary of this plan.
Just me?
Because, like, Shouto had a plan. He spent the time between the two war arcs specifically developing a brand-new combat technique that he planned to use to shut down Dabi's combat advantage without killing him. He convinced his dad not to change the plan like Endeavor was hesitantly sounding him out about[1]; he went out and talked and asked questions, and even if they weren't the right words every single time, he did his best and he did it with intention. If Dabi proves to be dead, it won't be because of anything Shouto did to him; it'll be because Dabi himself chose to stand back up, take a warp gate across the country, pick a fight with the guy who doesn't have the power set to shut him down without unduly hurting him, and trying to replicate an Ultimate Move specifically tailored for someone with a balanced power set Dabi doesn't have. And if Dabi lives, it's still going to be because Shouto booked it across the country and used that same technique to stop him again.
Shoto's decision to save Shoto is also a continuation of his decision to help save Iida from Stain. It's not enough for Shoto to experience a change of heart about his own life, he's got to take what he learned about people's capacity to change, and the importance of connections and then put that into practice and help others the way he was helped.
However, it also further develops the theme of giving help that's not ask for from Iida because Shoto's not saving a mostly heroic kid, he's saving Toya to help break a familial cycle of abuse (because murdering the abuse victim isn't how you end the cycle of abuse... actually).
Shoto's last lines to Dabi are also a refutation of this idea of destiny that he once thought he was ruled by. It's once again, Shoto teaching someone else the lesson he learned. Toya says a warped rail can never mingle with a straight and narrow one! In other words Shoto can never understand or get along with Dabi, because Dabi will forever be defined as the failure because of the circumstances of his brith, whereas Shoto will always be the success.
His final action is a decision to break the cycle they were born into: no, we're gonna mingle whether you like it or not.
Shoto's ultimate move Phosphor is not only a move he designed far in advance to take down Dabi non-lethally, it also is a rejection of his father's teaching method. Toya says he only ever taught me how to turn up the heat. Enji only valued both Shoto and Toya for their flame quirks. Developing his own quirk and breaking away from what his father wanted, specifically in order to save his brother. It's Shoto rejecting what his father created both of them for (a successor to his quirk) and finding his own path. By using that move to take down Dabi he's not only teaching Dabi their flame exists for more than just destruction, he's also by letting Dabi live giving Dabi a chance.

From a conversation with @class1akids
Dabi was the last push to unlock Shoto’s full power. Until then he was on the track of mastering flashfire like Endeavor planned for him (except for his own reasons) but realising the fighting Dabi with fire was gonna kill them both and also he’s simply no match fire only helped Shoto to fully take control of what his quirk is Like his quirk development goes parallel with how he faces each member of his family and finally meeting Toya is like the last piece of his puzzle to find his own full power and identity.
It's not just Shoto decides to save his brother because he's just that nice, his arc is literally incomplete without it. The act of creating phosphor a move specifically to save Dabi is both him unlocking the full power of his quirk (by balancing the fire and ice sides of his quirk) but also achieving balance between trying not to leave his family behind while at the same time becoming his own person and hero outside of his family circumstances.
Citing my conversation with class1akids again:
Toya is endangering everyone at Gunga. Endeavor has no means to stop him and when he tries to murder suicide Rei interrupts and his “hero way out” is taken. All he can do is watch helplessly as his family is about to burn to death with a bunch of strangers he tried to protect. But it would do Shoto dirty to use his heart technique to kill his family and the strangers so he comes in a clutch and I see that confrontation as the power trauma vs the power of healing in the family. With Shoto who is a true hero, they can put the fire out and save the family and strangertoo. Shoto become a balanced hero and bring relief and reassurance, Endeavor was completely helpless, and Toyas inner child got the attention he wanted, plus depending on how you read it, he may have become less suicidal.
Shoto also, and I want to point this out desires to stop his brother not to take him down but because he doesn't want him to hurt any more people. He's again finding a balance between two ideas 1) Shoto needs to stop his brother in order to stop him from creating more victims and 2) Shoto needs to find a way to stop him that's not just putting him down because Toya himself is a victim.
Shoto also, and I must point this out for the comparison between Zuko and Azula goes out of his way to engage Dabi in conversation, ask him why he didn't come home and what happened to him in the years after he died. This is especially poignant because unlike Zuko and Azula who grew up together, Shoto basically had no relationship with his brother (and the rest of his siblings really) before Toya died because Enji purposefully kept Shoto separate from all the "failures."
So yes, the act of saving Toya is more for the completion of Shoto's arc than any redemption arc for Toya but Toya's not just a plot object to move around for Shoto's arc, Toya has his own agency all throughout. In fact it's the fact that Toya resists being saved every step of the way that provides the challenge that Shoto needs to grow in order to be able to save him.
Toya's not just after revenge against his father that's the surface reason, Toya is also just blatantly suicidal. Toya's birth is marked as a failure, his death wasn't even acknowledged by his family and everything stayed the same in his absence, so he created Dabi while praying at his own shrine in order to mourn Toya. Dabi can't find any meaning in his life where he was born as a failure, so he'll use his death taking revenge against Endeavor for having been born in order to give his life meaning.

What makes Avatar look especially bad in its treatment of Azula in comparison to how MHA treats Dabi, is that Dabi is way, way less redeemable than Azula. For one Azula has clearly proven affection both her friends and her brother (and I don't think she even deserves Mai and Ty Lee's forgiveness they had every right to walk out on her and want nothing to do with her again.)
Dabi is probably the ugliest victim of the League of Villains. The rest of the league have far more moments in their bonds with each other. Toya is the outsider to the league even if there are some subtle hints to his affection (he tries to show up to save Twice, and also burns down Toga's family house to comfort her). The villains are mostly shown to be redeemable by their positive friendship with each other, and Dabi at several points denies the league's bond (he pulls a Terra and yells out loud at the top of his lungs none of the league matter to him). Unlike with Terra you can argue this is most likely Dabi trying to cover up his real feelings. However, the fact that he feels the need to hide his affection from the league shows he's purposefully distancing himself from any bonds whatsoever.
Unlike Azula who has gone out of her way to help her brother in one major way, and also shows hints in early season 3 of having that sibling bond with him Dabi just straight up wants to murk Toya. Azula also tries to murk Zuko, but that's only when Zuko leaves on the day of Black Sun (one without telling her, and two something that probably left her alone to deal with the consequences of lying to her father for his sake). Either way, Azula's behavior in early season 3 is setup for the fact that their sibling bond can be salvaged.
Dabi is way worse to Shoto in comparison. Dabi in the first part never saw Shoto as his own person, just a puppet of his father (puppets have no autonomy or personhood). His feelings towards Shoto only went so far as Shoto was someone who could kill in order to upset Enji. Dabi also doesn't particularly care for the rest of his family as well (only calling out Natsu's name when his brain is literally melting), they're either ways to hurt endeavor, or he wants to drag them in hell with him. Heck his last words after being saved is telling everyone to die and go to hell.
Dabi doesn't bother to make bonds with the league or have any lingering affection for his family because Dabi's determined to seslf destruct. He's given up on life the moment he saw that he died and nothing changed in that household, now all that's left is for him to create a meaningful death by dragging his family to hell with him.
Dabi is also even as a child made out to be an unpleasant victim. He attacks baby Shoto with his flames early on out of jealousy (even though he later admits that he was being unfair to Shoto). He makes the situation in the house worse by loudly screaming and demanding his father's attention. He screams at his mother and throws her complicity in Enji's abuse in her face.
This is in comparison to Shoto who in childhood flashbacks we are only ever seen either 1) crying, and 2) trying to comfort and protect his mother. Toya's even made out to be difficult to empathize with as a child - which like flew over half of the fandom's heads because he got accusations of somehow abusing his father and the rest of his family in that chapter at 10 years old. However, that in a way illustrates my point.
The fact that Dabi is so disliked by a certain portion of the fandom is because Horikoshi paints such an ugly portrait of Toya in the way he expresses his victimhood. It's done deliberately too, because number one Toya by resisting Shoto's attempts to save him and trying to self destruct instead retains agency as a character. He makes decisions even though they're bad self destructive ones, he's not just a prop. Number two, the fact that Toya is intentionally portrayed as such an ugly victim makes Shoto's decision to break the cycle of familial abuse by saving Toya and not leaving a single family member all the more poignant.
Toya is an uglier victim than Azula, actively trying to kill himself in a way that Azula isn't, and treats Shoto way worse than Azula ever treated Zuko and yet Azula isn't shown the sympathy or given the salvation that Toya is.
Because once again, the writers didn't think about the ending of Azula's arc or of Azula as her own character. Shoto defeating Toya is the culmination of his desire to break the cycle of abuse in his family. Zuko putting Azula down is just to make Zuko look better. It's in service of Zuko's character instead of both of their characters.
THE BAD
Avatar isn't setting up some gritty ending where the bad guys can't be stopped, they can only be killed. In fact it's pretty close in tone to MHA.
Season 3 especially is the season that really begins to hammer in on the themes that even the people on the enemy side are still human after all. The headband shows that Fire Nation children are indoctrinated into the war, but they are in the end still children. There's the story between Avatar Roku and Sozin, and once again Iroh saying that Zuko has both options becoming like Roku or becoming like Sozin available to him (but not Azula I guess). There's Zuko joining Team Avatar, even after he betrayed Katara in Ba Sing Se and should have burnt that bridge then and there. There's Zuko working to earn their trust again when no one on the team really owe it to him.
The main character of the show is a pacifist, who deliberately learns a way to stop Ozai without killing him before the final battle because he doesn't want to break the values taught to him by his culture.
If the entire theme of season 3 is redemption, healing and that the fire nation are not inherently evil then why does Zuko's sister and character foil end the last shot of the series screaming and crying with no one comforting or even attempting to sympathize with her. Why is this one character marked for tragedy in a show that is about redemption and healing and showing compassion to your enemies and very specifically not a tragedy.
Toya literally burns all of the flesh off of his body, and somehow he has a gentler ending than Azula, because at least Toya's arc ends with all the members of his family showing up to try to cool down his flames, and when he's on the ground burnt to a crisp his father finally apologizes to him. Toya is a skinless burnt chicken wing, my boy has no skin, and somehow he's better off than Azula.
I don't think the writers gave Azula such a cruel ending because they don't like her, but rather because they just didn't think about her ending outside of what it meant for Zuko. Which is why you get moments like Aang who is apparently a pacifist who doesn't want to kill the Firelord, watching his daughter fall to her death while sitting on a flying bison and doing absolutely nothing to save her. ALL LIFE IS PRECIOUS (except for Azula I guess).
It's not bad because a victim doesn't get saved, it's bad because it doesn't fit in with the rest of the story.
Not only is Zuko saving Azula a very natural conclusion to his arc, but there's far more setup for Zuko reaching out to his sister and saving her than there ever was for Toya and Shoto. Both Toya and Terra are screaming at the top of their lungs "I HATE EVERYONE, YOU SHOULD ALL JUST GO TO HELL." They're both making decisions and committing to their self destruction while Azula is a 14 year old girl having a mental breakdown.
Anyway, time to quote the bad bad video again.
"When does a villain deserve a redemption arc? When do we deserve a redemption arc? I know this is gonna hurt, but characters are not people. They are tools. They are represetations of people. They can be used to say other things. They can be symbolic representation of other ideas. Azula's story is not just about a fourteen year old defeated by her brother for the throne, Azula is Zuko's character foil, where she is ruthless and practical, Zuko is empathetic and emotional. Where Azula's a prodigy, Zuko has to work hard to earn eve a fraction of her power.
I specifically chose to cite MHA, because of how differently it decided to use Shoto and Toya's character foiling. Shoto recognizes himself in Toya, and how different their paths were in life. This is explicitly motivates him to save Toya. It's also the culmination of everything that Shoto has learned because Shoto is a hero who believes that actions speak louder than words. It's not enough for Shoto to resolve his own inner struggle, he also has to help Dabi with his because that's showing Shoto has grown rather than telling us.
I think that is where the major difference lies between Shoto and Zuko, we're told that Zuko has chosen the path of empathy and healing, that he's learned to give people love and patience like Iroh has but instead of showing that the culmination of his arc is having a fist fight with his sister in a denny's parkinglot.
Azula is Zuko's character foil, where she is ruthless and practical, Zuko is empathetic and emotional. Where Azula's a prodigy, Zuko has to work hard to earn eve a fraction of her power.
If Zuko is empathic and emotional and that is why he's gained friends while Azula is now alone after having lost her friends due to the way she treated them, then like... what a great opportunity for Zuko to SHOW that quality of empathy.
However, Zuko doesn't do anything that Shoto does in the final fight. He's not even here for Azula, Azula's just an obstacle for taking back the crown. He doesn't talk to Azula, engage her in any way, try to de-escalate and avoid the fight.
If you want to make the tragedy that Azula and Zuko have taken such different paths in life that that Zuko fighting with his sister is unavoidable you could um... at least show Zuko being sad over the prospect of fighting his sister or being reluctant in any way.
(Before you come in here with "Zuko doesn't owe Azula anything take" this isn't about whether or not Azula is a terrible sister to Zuko, this is about the story that avatar is attempting to tell. Shoto and Dabi's fight is tragic because Shoto doesn't want to fight Dabi, he wants Dabi to come home and for their family to be complete. Zuko never expresses anything like that so where does the tragedy come from?)
If it were 100% committed to a tragedy like Terra's death then I wouldn't mind. if it were 100% committed to a story of redemption like Shoto reaching out to Toya then I wouldn't mind. My issue arises from the fact they want to have their cake and eat it too.
They want to give this tragic end to Azula, and use it to illustrate how Zuko has grown as a character. However, you can't have both.
If Zuko's growth is about learning that his father's love based on achievement and 2) learning he needed to get lost in life in order to find himself then why doesn't any of Zuko's actions demonstrate this lesson Zuko has learned about love, and about how you can be your own person outside what your father expects from you.
If Zuko has grown as a character he should be able to show those actions. He does show his new understanding of love and friendship to Team Avatar, but as I said that's easy mode. That's Shoto's attempts to save Iida, it's a step in the right direction. It's also not really Zuko demonstrating a selfless love, because he's also at the same time trying to earn their trust and earn his way into the group.
It's also not Zuko breaking the cycle of abuse in their family in any way. Shoto is trying to break free from his role of his father's masterpiece, and at the same time helping Dabi break free from his view that he's the failure.
It's also such a natural ending for Zuko's arc, to take the lessons he learned from Iroh and give them to his sister who needs them so they can both break away from their father's parenting. As I said Zuko does solve the internal conflict within himself, but he doesn't really demonstrate that by helping someone else find their balance.
If you wanted the tragic end, then it would have to be about Zuko's failure to reach out to his sister, because he hasn't learned how to reach out to her. Or because he tries and is unable to. The writers don't seem to understand that though, they think the tragedy is about Azula bringing it all on herself, and not the inherent tragedy of a fourteen year old girl being unable to be saved.
The set up is right there too, because number one avatar is about balance. So, wouldn't the true ending be finding balance between the siblings, not having Zuko rise and Azula fall. Number two, Azula being alone and friendless because of her own actions is again a parallel to where Zuko was in early season 2 at his lowest point. Except Zuko can be the better person in this situation by reaching out to her.
Zuko doesn't break the golden child / scapegoat dynamic, he just flips it so now he's the success and Azula is the failure.
While Azula's fall comes from cruelty and rejection from friends and allies it is Zuko's humility and kindness and friendship that ultimately wins the day. Him sacrifcing herself for Katara and her bringing Azula down and then her healing him. Azula ending up imprisoned isn't something happening to a real person, it's a deliberative narrative choice by the author to say something about how people like this isolate themselves and end up alone. "
As I've stated above, I'm not saying Azula didn't deserve to take a fall. Her fall is actually set up from the first moment she met Ty lee. However, there's no set up for her fall being permanent.
Azula's given way more humanizing moments than characters like Terra or even Dabi. Which is why Azula being in an insane asylum for the rest of her life doesn't fit as an ending at all.
Azula is one link in the chain of abuse. Her father only gives out affection in regards to her usefulness. No matter what Azula is an asset first and a daughter second. Azula then repeats the cycle and treats her friends the same way. She has been shown through an improper model of parenting of using fear to dominate others with power and control and she replicates that in her other relationships.
Therefore, Ty lee and Mai leaving her is not only deserved, it's the perfect opportunity to pull the rug underneath Azula and to show her that her understanding of how relationships work is completely wrong.
This also mirrors Zuko's arc, because part of Zuko's arc is realizing just how wrong Ozai is for making both children earn his love, and that he doesn't need to measure his self-worth based upon his father's approval. He also learns about healthy expressions of trust and friendship from the gang.
Azula loses in part due to her own inability to form healthy relationships is losing people rapid fire, her brother leaves and joins the enemy side, Mai and Ty Lee betray her in favor of her brother, then her father in one action of leaving Azula behind and throws the title of Firelord to her after it's become completely meaningless reminds her of her place. Azula learns in about five episodes what Zuko had in 3.5 seasons to process that her father's love was always conditional and no matter what she did she would never truly "earn it."
People leaving Azula isn't exactly the problem, the problem is that Azula ends up alone permanently without being given the same chance that Zuko is. Terra, and Toya both get opportunities to turn back. They both refuse the hand that's reaching out to him. Mai and Ty Lee leaving is caused by Azula's own choices, but her ultimate end isn't. She's not even given the chance to turn away being saved like Terra and Toya do because Zuko doesn't even bother to try saving her. Her ending is not entirely brought about by her own choices, because the writers need her to take a fall to uplift Zuko.
Azula ending up imprisoned isn't something happening to a real person, it's a deliberative narrative choice by the author to say something about how people like this isolate themselves and end up alone.
I think once again it comes from the author's misunderstanding things because they don't want to look at the story from Azula's perspective, only Zuko's.
Stay at Home almost had it when he said the tragedy of Zuko and Azula was there to show how two different parenting styles affected these children.
The tragedy is that Zuko and Azula started in the same place, but Zuko had persistent guidance and someone who modeled for him a healthy kind of love. The difference is that Azula has never experienced any kind of healthy love or support on the level Zuko has, so she models all her relationships on the way her father treats her. It's not that Azula is offered some chance for change and rejects it, it's that Azula isn't even aware of the fact that there's another way because no one is there to show it to her.
Which is why I said once again, Zuko being the first one to show Azula the lessons he himself was shown by Iroh is such a natural place for his character to end.
Azula also even while completely alone and with no idea what healthy love is, knows that there is something wrong with her and is troubled by that fact in a way Dabi and Terra aren't.
Azula: I can sit here and complain about how our mom liked Zuko more than me. But I don't really care. My own mother... thoguht I was a monster... She was right of course, but it still hurt.
Then there's the famous mirror scene:
Ursa: I didn't want to miss my own daughter's coronation. Azula:Don't pretend to act proud. I know what you really think of me. You think I'm a monster. Ursa: think you're confused. All your life you used fear to control people, like your friends Mai and Ty Lee. Azula: Well what choice do I have?! Trust is for fools. Fear is the only reliable way. Even you fear me. Ursa: No. I love you, Azula. I do.
Both of these scenes indicate that Azula thinks of herself as a monster and is deeply uncomfortable with the idea. Considering Ursa is a voice in Azula's head and not a ghost, it also shows on some level Azula knew what she did to Mai and Ty Lee was wrong and feels conflicted over it.
Once again she's much more in conflict with herself than Toya and Terror ever are, and who's someone who's constantly warring with himself? Who's someone who could help resolve her inner conflict... Zuko (too bad the way the show's written he never does).
Azula doesn't choose to self-destruct the way that Terra and Toya did. Azula's ending isn't brought about by her choice not to change, because she's never given the chance to change in the first place. Her tragic ending would make sense if it was entirely of her own choices, but Azula doesn't retain her agency in the end it's literally taken away from her. She loses control of her mind, and her ending is being chained to a grate screaming and then thrown into an asylum.
I'm not arguing against Azula's ending because she's my favorite character and I don't want bad things to happen to her. It's because her tragedy isn't about her it's about Zuko, and her ending actively takes agency away from her where at least Toya and Terra both retain their agency up until the end. It's not good writing because the tragedy doesn't fit in with the rest of the story which is about balance and healing - and it's also ableist as hell.
THE UGLY
Azula's ending is unfitting to the tone of the story she's in, makes her and Zuko's arcs feel incomplete, and also is ableist as hell.
Here's yet more evidence that Azula's tragic ending is poorly thought out. Azula's mental breakdown doesn't exist in service of her character, but Zuko's.
Azula's issues pop up out of nowhere after episode 15, and take place over the last 6 episode of the series. The idea of Azula having a mental breakdown isn't necessarily a bad concept, but it's executed poorly.
The first way it's executed poorly is just how rushed it is. There's basically no hints of any mental instability beforehand. Of course people can have mental breakdowns spontaenously like that in real life, but this is a story and stories require foreshadowing. Azula spontaneously developing mental issues doesn't feel like it's planned as a part of an arc. First off, because the writers don't seem too sure about what Azula's symptoms even are. Hallucination, paranoia, manic laughter, but apparently she's still able to bend lightning just fine. Secondly, the writer's intentions for giving Azula a mental breakdown are pretty transparent.
The writer's room needed to come up with a believable reason why Zuko would suddenly be able to fight on equal terms with Azula, so boom sudden mental illness. The intent was not to create a sympathetic portrayal of a young girl struggling with both paranoia and delusions. The intent was to nerf Azula because they couldn't think of any other way this plot could end, other than Zuko and Azula fighting in a denny's parkinglot.
As I said they use mental illness as a plot device to take Azula's agency and choices away from her. It's not done with the intention of humanizing her, and in fact except for one small scene with her talking to her mother in the mirror it's a pretty negative and unsympathetic portrayal of mental illness. Not because the writers hate mentally ill people, but because they needed Azula to have a mental breakdown in order for a plot point to happen. Which is why they didn't think of the potential implciations of such a writing choice at all.
Now, people are going to argue about me so I'll use one final example. Azula's ending may be controversial but it's universally agreed upon that the Game of Thrones Ending was bad, right?
Game of Thrones uses mental illness as the exact same plot device, to explain why Daenerys Targaryen turns from a hero to villain in the last few episodes with absolutely no foreshadowing. In fact, the all of the show director's interviews about that choice are just blatantly ableist.

Rant from @hamliet
This quote is (likely unintentionally) gaslighting, ableist, terrible logically, and downright offensive.
First, ableism: why, why, why are we conflating madness with evil? She was driven to madness so she killed a bunch of people and had to be put down? And you think this is a great message in the year of our Lord 2019? [...] Additionally, while good writing is to an extent subjective, there are general consensuses on what make good writing--and Game of Thrones hit all the general consensuses for bad writing, from bad pacing to confusing character assassination. Critics are like, pretty united on this front. No one thought Dany’s turn made sense, even the ones who expect Mad Queen in the books. Maybe if people love a character who is meant to be evil you're not writing them correctly... or maybe they aren't meant to be evil.
Daenerys and Azula are incredibly similiar characters. They're both dragon themed, alligned with the element of fire, they're both colonizers they both represent the warrior princess archetype.
I'd say Daenerys is more of a tragic heroine though, because while Danerys is essentially doing the same thing as Azula, waging war in a foreign land and a culture that's not hers, for the purpose of then bringing back soldiers to her home continent so she can wage war again - while she is definitely a war mongerer she has good intentions. Daenerys for all of her faults, genuinely wants to break the chains and help out people.
I think Azula definitely sees herself as the hero for winning the war for the fire nation's sake, but she's completely uncritical of her own culture and she doesn't really have the good intentions that Dany has. She does it more out of a sense of duty, and her belief of divine right, not because she wants to break people free.
Daenerys's problem is that she doesn't understand the culture she's invading and the complicated world she lives in and despite all good intentions, is as I described above, invading a foreign power so she can go back and wage a war to reclaim the throne. Even if Daenerys would then proceed to go on to be the bestest queen ever that wouldn't change the fact her methods to get to the throne were incredibly violent, and she's sort of failing to break free from the cycle that led the Targeryen rule to fail in the first place.
Azula's problem is she sees herself as the hero and is therefore uncritical of fire nation values. She doesn't have any nobler intentions either other than service to her country, she just like Zuko is just trying to fulfill her duties as daughter and believe her birthright puts her above others. (I mean Dany does too but digressing).
Azula's more of a tragic villain who plays the antagonist role in the story, Danerys is one of the three heroes. However, she's more of a tragic villain in the sense that she's first season zuko pre character development just way more competent.
However, while Daenerys is a much more heroic character than Azula, here's the thing. I still think she's going to die. She is foreshadowed pretty heavily to die, and fail for her quest for the throne, because her entire story is a deconstruction of the warrior princess and the liberator archetype.
However, the story that GRRM is building throughout his books with Dany as an incredibly flawed heroine is different from what we got in the show, which was Daenerys going crazy and starting to murder people. That's because Daenerys turn to darkness wasn't about her character at all, it was just making her into a plot device to move their bad idea for a plot forward. That's why the turn is so unnatural and makes little sense with her character, that's why it's so rushed.
That's also why it's ableist, because it's using mental illness as a plot device to make a character unsympathetic and monstrous and give the other characters a reason to put them down.
The same for Azula, outside of one scene where he's talking to her mother, Azula's mental illness manifests in her screaming, maniacally laughing, looking like the joker did her makeup, and her instability also makes her violent and dangerous to be around. (Ignoring the fact that most people who experience delusions in real life are harmless, and more likely to be the victims of violence).
Her sudden mental illness isn't even used to make her more sympathetic in say Zuko's eyes and make him realize she's a victim, no it's just there to nerf her so she can be violently put down. The way she's drawn, the way she acts, it's to paint her as monstrous as possible. Her last action is like sobbing and screaming while being drawn as ugly as possible. She's not even given a small hope for recovery, because it just ends there. That's a pretty great message to send people that experience delusions, not only will you not recover or be shown sympathy, you'll also get sent to a mental asylum for the rest of your life. The choice for both Azula and Dany is not to portray any kind of mental illness in a respectful way, but to make a plot point happen.
As I said I expect Dany to die in the books, but there's a difference between dying as a tragic hero succumbing to your flaws but still having your good intentions acknowledged and just turning into a villain for no reason and being put down like a rabid dog.
(This is a quote I stole from a Shigaraki post but): "Why does she need to be put down in the first place, she has trauma, not rabies."
The problem isn't bad thing happened to my favorite character, the problem with the ending is it doesn't take Dany's setup into consideration.
Stealing from @hamliet again:
The thing about tragedies is that you have to manage expectations and clearly show that your tragic hero is doomed from the very early on–ie you have to show them making steadily worse and worse decisions (see: Eren Jaeger in SnK), if not directly tell your audience at the very beginning that this is a tragic story (ie see Greek choruses and Shakespeare, the prequels from Star Wars because everyone knows Anakin is Vader–plus I’d argue Anakin’s arc only works because we know he comes back to the light in the end. Audiences don’t like reversing on set up/undoing structure. To make Dany a tragic villain is to go against the structure of her arc in both show and book. That’s why people don’t like it, even if the books makes it seem more believable.
Kate then goes onto describe a character that's much more comparable to Azula's. Honestly Arianne is closer to Azula than Daenerys is.
You know who is set up as a tragic heroine destined to descend and die because of her flaws in the books, whose arc has almost certainly been combined with Dany’s in some sense in the show? Arianne Martell. (and another character known as f!Aegon) In the books, Arianne is incredibly ambitious, and especially resents her brother and his quest for power. Like Margaery (another tragic character), Arianne seeks power and is intelligent and manipulative in her quest for it. But Margaery’s fatal mistake is that in seeking power and prestige, she’s become more a pawn than anything else for a villain (Cersei). She chose to play with lions, and she’ll be torn apart; that’s not surprising. Arianne, as her chapters hint, is going to almost certainly marry f!Aegon, playing with fire, and die burning for it.   Arianne’s grasping for her own power is never portrayed as cruel or stupid like the main human villain (Cersei); on the contrary, we empathize with a girl who truly cares about her people, but resents her father’s preferential treatment towards her brother. That’s the difference between Arianne and Cersei: Arianne cares. She is not cruel. But her pride is still going to get her killed.
There's a lot of game of throne females you could compare Azula to because GOT is full of queens, but like. Azula may be a tragic villain firmly on the side of the antagonists but she's not Cerseie. She's not queen, she doesn't wield the power that Cersei wields. In fact one of Azula's downfalls is finding out she doesn't have as much power as she thought she had, and ultimately was just a tool of her fathers.
She's not Rhaenyra or Alicent, because yes she may be grabbing for power but her character isn't affected by misogyny. Because once again, the writers simply didn't think about misogyny except for a really surface level "girls can be just as strong as boys" way so we really have no idea how women are seen in the fire nation. The show doesn't really explore if being a woman makes things harder, or makes people treat her differently than Zuko because the writers just didn't consider Azula's perspcetive on that matter.
Azula is alike to Danaerys in several ways, but as I said I think her ultimate end comes from Azula understimating her own importance in her father's eyes, and quickly realizing when her father is her only family left she never had his love or loyalty in the first place.
But Margaery’s fatal mistake is that in seeking power and prestige, she’s become more a pawn than anything else for a villain (Cersei). She chose to play with lions, and she’ll be torn apart; that’s not surprising.
Azula's most famous quote is about how Long Feng isn't even a player, only to find out her father considered her a pawn from the beginning and be broken by the revelation.
The difference being of course that Avatar is not Game of Thrones and it won't even kill the evil fascist dictator so it doesn't make a lot of sense to hand Azula the ending that Arianne got. They have the same fatal flaw.
Anyway, I made this big post but I can explain why Azula's tragic ending down't work in one sentence.
AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER IS NOT A TRAGEDY.
Maybe the reason Azula should get redeemed is because THE SHOW IS ABOUT F&%CKING REDEMPTION.

Speed: 5/5 Power: 5/5 Intelligence: 4/5 Coordination: 5/5 Cooperation: 2/5
Personality
Y/N is an extroverted individual who is independent and known for her straightforwardness, which can sometimes come across as cold and unemotional. She is Calm and composed, yet brutal in combat. It's not easy to break down her mental barriers, as she doesn't trust others easily. However, she is always there for people in need, especially for those closest to her, for whom she would do anything. Secretly a softie.
Quirk:
Quirk Name: Ice Flames (Purpleflames)
Explanation: Y/N possesses the extraordinary power to unleash icy lilac flames from her hands, with the ability to control the speed at which these flames freeze. She can also change the flames from a gaseous state, to liquid or solid. When she freezes something, the resulting ice resembles glistening amethyst crystals.
Y/N can also use Cyrokinesis; She's able to control and manipulate existing Ice or Snow.
Drawbacks:
1. If Y/N's flames remain in a gaseous state for too long, it drains her immense power, often causing her to lose consciousness. Her hands suffer greatly from the cold of her flames, sometimes leaving her unable to feel them for hours or even days.
2. Overheating: Although her flames are cold/frozen, her body temperature can rise if she uses her power for too long or too intensely.
History:
Y/N is the daughter of Rei Todoroki and Enji Todoroki, also known as Endeavor. Following the passing of her older brother Toya, Enji devoted himself to training both her and her younger brother Shoto to become future Pro-Heroes. Unlike Shoto, Y/N did not resist; secretly, she dreamed of fulfilling her deceased brother's dream and becoming a Pro-Hero. Since the incident involving Toya, she has had a strained relationship with her family, especially with Shoto, with whom she was once closest. At the age of 14, Y/N rushed to the aid of Pro-Heroes and assisted in battle, prompting Endeavor to intensify her training. In a remarkably short time, she obtained her Hero license and has since been acknowledged as the youngest Pro-Hero.
She is extremely popular in the Hero world, but due to her rapid rise, she had little contact with people her age and had no semblance of a normal childhood. Three years later, under public pressure, Y/N is now expected to attend UA to receive proper training to become a true superhero.

✯ Love ✿ ✯ Icyspicy
✯ Princess ✯ Hot stuff
✯ Darling ✯ Candy cane
✯ Peach ✯ Shou ✿
• Shoto never thought about giving you any nicknames. Both of his parents weren’t the most, affectionate couple; so it never crossed his mind. Until he noticed how other couples gave each-other cute nicknames, and so he seek advice from an export at romance.
“Hmmm, well you could call her maybe love? Love is a good start, for relationships starters. ^^” Ochaco advice, and that’s exactly what he did. As he did; it made you shy around him.
• Where there’s a prince, there’s always a princess. Yes, you’ll always be Shotos princess. He calls you Princess when he's in a good mood. And he thinks it suits you very much. Because of how charming you tend to be, you do it without realizing it. <3
• “Hello darling, how are you?” yes, this is a classic nickname he calls you when you're alone. It may be cheesy but, he loves be it. And as for you, you love it as well. You feels so special in a way, when he calls you darling. It gives you butterflies in your stomach.
• Peaches are your favorite fruit, although; you rarely ate them. Shoto figured it was because you didn’t have time to pick some. For you both were way too busy with hero studies to do so. Therefore, he somehow convinced Mr. Aizawa to take him to a peach farm… Perks of being the number one hero’s son.
When you had first heard him say that, you were confused. So when you asked him how he got the nickname, you were surprised and very amused at the same time.
“Aww! You remember! I like peaches! That’s so sweet Shou!”
He only nodded, and there was a stumble small smile when you called me Shou.
| Y/N |
• How do I even begin with this… nickname. Icyspicy? Really? What kind of nickname is this T^T? I can’t even believe how nonchalant Shoto was about it.
He was a bit confused, though; there was surprisingly faint pink hue upon his cheeks when you called out his “nickname”.
“Where did you even come up with that?” He questioned.
“Honestly, I don’t even know. I figured since you have an ice and a fire quirk. I’d give you a nickname that is combined with it.” You smile. He pat your head in amusement.
• “Hey there hot stuff~” You purr in Shotos ear, as you gently ran your fingers through his hair. Okay, now this took him by surprise. He was barely getting used to icyspicy, but now you are coming up with nicknames left and right.
“Where do you get theses nicknames…”
“From my heart hot stuff ❤︎“
• At this point Shoto doesn’t even know nor question, where you get your.. unique… nicknames for him… “Marry Christmas candy cane! I love you!” You say, as you handed him a present and gave him a peck on the cheek. “Merry Christmas to you too love.” He kissed your nose and walked away.
“Hey! Candy cane! You can’t just do that and walk away!” You exclaimed, flustered by his action.
• Shou is his permanent nickname. Out of all the nickname you called him. You’ve been thinking about it for a while, but never came up with anything. You wanted to give him a permanent nickname. One that you could proudly call him out to without embarrassing him. “Hmm…” you thought as you wrote down some nicknames.
You played around with it, until you “accidentally” spelled him name wrong. “Hmm… oh! Opps—wait…” you looked at the writing. Shou… “sounds like shoe hehe.” You giggled as you doddle around.
The next day, you had accidentally called him Shou. He was confused. “Oops! Sorry, I wasn’t trying to call you that—“
“I like it. Sounds cute.” He smiles slightly. You blush a little. “Oh.. alright than,” you giggled.
“Anyways! Shou~ let’s go on a date! I wanna have you all to myself today!” You cheekily winked. He agreed and left to go change. “Oh! Shou!” You called out to him. He turns around curiously. “I love you!” You smile, before running off.

Holding Out for a Hero Villain
Pairing: Shigadabi
Rating: T
Contents: Non-graphic mentions of mass murder including of children, suggestive dialogue
Getting caught with a sleeping quirk was not what he was expecting, but Dabi wakes with his hands completely encased in quirk-neutralizing cuffs and locked in an interrogation room and that is pretty much what he expected if he ever got brought in, so that’s something he supposes. He leans back in the chair. He doesn't feel any extra bumps or bruises that might indicate they took a blood sample, but they definitely could have taken hair or swabbed his cheek. He doesn't feel like he's been asleep for longer than seven hours, but the quirk could have a different feel than normal sleep. He assumes that means that they are likely in the process of verifying his identity. Which means--
It's absolutely not a surprise when Endeavor, Hawks, and some cop come into the room as he leans back in his chair and waits. And yeah, Enji's eyes are going over his face desperately, like he's looking for any trace of Toya that might be left and all Dabi can do is give him a vicious grin before he turns his attention to Hawks.
"Blowing your load a little early, aren't you, birdy? Guess being the fastest hero isn't always a good thing, is it?"
His wings don't even twitch, but Dabi has been around him for long enough to know that when the spy is holding himself that rigidly, it's because he is trying to keep his mask on. "Dabi, or should we say 'Toya'? Good to see you again, man."
He shrugs, not paying any attention to Endeavor. This isn't how his reveal was supposed to go and he is not going to start in on him when he can't back the words up with his flames at the moment. "Call me what you want, doesn't matter. You're going to let me out soon enough anyway."
The cop takes lead next, moving to sit across from him at the table. "You seem confident in that, but you are an A-ranked villain, Mr. Todoroki. Surely you know that we have a vested interest in keeping you here before your relocation to Tartarus."
"Oh sure," he agrees. "And you are?"
"My apologies, Detective Tsukauchi."
"The living lie-detector! Huh, nice to meet you." Hawks can't quite keep his wings from giving an aborted little twitch at that. Dabi doesn't react to it. Hawks had definitely not given him information about Tsukauchi, but their PLF members in the police force certainly had. He's never been more pleased that he decided to take the ribbing from the rest of the League after Deika by showing up 'empty-handed' after going off to recruit again in favor of keeping the double agent as out of the loop as possible. Endeavor tenses too, and he is thrilled to have already put them on their back foot just by knowing more than they expected him to. He reclines as much as he can in his chair. The fact his ankles are chained down is the only reason his feet aren't on the table.
"I didn't realize my reputation would proceed me." The detective gives him a placid smile. "Can you elaborate on why we would let you out given your... extensive list of crimes?"
"Because if you don't then you're going to watch Japan fall apart around you." He waits to see if the detective spots a lie, however he manages to do so with his quirk.
"Hmm, well until then, we have some other questions that we'd like to ask you."
Dabi settles in. Mostly ignoring them as he starts to count the very faint ticks he can hear from the detective's watch. He's not giving them anything else. Now he just has to wait.
///
The trio left after about an hour of him stonewalling them and Dabi did his best to just doze again in the chair. He's gonna have so much to catch up on once he's out, that he's damn certain that getting the extra sleep will be more helpful than not.
It feels like maybe another two hours have passed before Endeavor and Tsukauchi come back into the room, his father definitely a little paler than he usually is beneath his flames, the fire of his mask flickering the way it does when he's agitated enough to be having some difficulty controlling it.
"Already? I thought you'd hold out at least a day." He had been settling in for a week at minimum with torture, but he'll take whatever he can get.
"Sekoto Peak is gone."
Which. Oh. Okay. Dabi blinks. That's not what he expected his father to say, but still, "That's wild. So are you taking the cuffs off now or after you let me back onto the street?"
"We're not letting you go," Enji growls.
"Okay. I'm going back to sleep then."
"You don't seem very surprised about this. Were you aware that this attack was coming?"
"That wasn't an attack, that was a warning shot." He yawns.
"A 'warning shot'?"
He hums, "He's giving you a chance to stop being stupid and let me go before he escalates."
"Shigaraki? He didn't come for any of the other members of the League that we've captured, why would you be any different?"
"I'm his favorite." It is funny to see his father glance at the detective to see if he's telling the truth. "You let me go, or what happens next is on you." He shoots a vicious smile at Enji, "Not that you've ever cared about the consequences of your inaction before."
They try to wheedle out anything else they can from him, but he doesn't give an inch until they leave.
///
It's only an hour before Hawks and the detective return, Hawks' feathers shining because they've gone sharp with his fury.
Dabi waits for them to speak with a lazy grin.
"Endeavor isn't here because his home, the hospital that your mother was located at, and the school your sister works at were destroyed."
"Oh, that was a big hospital wasn't it? And Fuyumi's a grade-school teacher isn't she? Man, that must have sucked for her. I wonder if she tried to hold any of her students together before they crumbled into dust."
"This isn't funny, Dabi!" The bird loses his temper. Always been able to get him furious by just barely laying on his buttons. "Two hundred children and five hundred people are dead."
"Yeah they are, and that's entirely on you, birdy. You could have kept playing ball and I still wouldn't have given you anything, but you wouldn't have the blood of seven hundred civilians on your hands." He considers. "Did Rei and Fuyumi survive?"
"They didn't." It's a lie, and not even a good one. The bird's wording of the casualties gave too much away. His father would only not be here because he suddenly had no choice but to very publicly take care of his family in the wake of a tragedy.
"Well isn't that interesting." Because if they did survive, if Duster decided to start with those places, then that means the treatments have progressed well ahead of schedule. "Are you letting me out now? Or do you want to see how much more damage he can do?"
"We're preparing your transfer to Tartarus." The detective tells him. "We'll complete your interrogation there and move forward with pursuing a trial."
"Okay, then everything else is on your hands too."
///
He's not expecting the next person who opens the door to the interrogation room. Dabi had thought that it would be the police, heroes, whoever they found to escort him to the transport or whatever. He was not expecting a red-eyed Natsuo to step in the room, face an aching mixture of fury and sorrow. Dabi forces the tightness in his own throat away before he leans back in his chair again and drawls,
"Hey little brother."
"Toya this has to stop." His voice trembles, cracks, tears slipping over his cheeks. "My school-- everything around it-- Toya, it's gone. He destroyed it. He killed everyone else."
"Yeah, I told them that would happen. It's going to keep happening until I'm back home--" Neither he nor Natsuo are prepared for the detective and two even more harried looking cops to burst in at that moment.
"Jaku, Otheon, and Esuha City have all been hit simultaneously. Eight city blocks have been wiped out." Huh, must have gotten Twice's help with that one.
"From each? Wow, he's losing his patience, haven't seen him mad in ages." The cops usher Natsuo out before he can get a word in and the detective stays behind, dragging a hand over his face. "Look, I told you: This is not going to stop until I'm free and call him off. You can keep holding out, you can try to trick him, kill me, whatever, but it won't stop until he has me back home. And if you keep waiting like this, he's not even going to have to tear this place down, because I'm sure the average citizens, the people who you're letting die, are going to get fed up sooner rather than later too."
There's an achingly long beat, but then the detective tells the others, "Prep him for transport."
They manage to get him up and locked in with four armed guards who take him downstairs to the vehicle bay, and loaded into the the back of the truck before the next call comes in, Tsukauchi not moving nearly far enough away to hide the crackling of his walkie-talkie that says that,
"The HPSC building has been destroyed. A new drop-off point is being selected." He leans back against the wall of the armored van and waits as they lock his limbs back into place.
Not even a full day and they break. Pathetic.
///
They drive him out into the middle of Deika. He knows it as soon as they open up the back of the van, and he gets the barest glimpse of the surroundings before they put a bag over his head and then they stand and wait. And wait. And wait.
Eventually Dabi risks getting shot and just plops down on the broken ground. He can feel the warmth of the sun on his skin for a little while, but it fades, and the light behind the cloth blinding him also goes. Whatever.
"He didn't show." Hawks. Which, okay, didn't know he was here. "Maybe you're not as important to him as you think you are."
"Maybe."
"Let's bring him to Tartarus."
Hands on his chains again, pulling him off of the ground and loading him back into the van. Dabi lets them lock him in. It takes ten minutes before their little caravan is trundling along again. They drive for an hour, until the wheels are going over smoothly paved roads again, before he starts to hear it.
From somewhere in the distance, there is crashing, crunching, screaming. The cops around him start to shout, trying to figure out what's happening and Dabi just does his best to brace for impact. He doesn't know if this is Shigaraki himself, Gigantomachia, Geten, or any of their other heavy hitters, but something is coming to hit this caravan. His ears pop as wind rushes in as the doors of the vehicle are yanked out of place with a wrenching metallic tear. He's chained down, but god, that motion makes his stomach twist. He hears the cops yelling, but the sound grows more distant as they're pulled out of the car, Hawks shouting,
"Everyone off the ground!"
Oh good. That means it is his lover after all. The truck swerves, hits a bump, and Dabi goes weightless for a second before something very solid is grabbing onto him. He hears the chains snap, and then the distinct sound of something decaying, before he's feeling his body covered in a deluge of dust. It takes him a second to realize that he's in someone's arms, against their chest for a handful of weightless seconds before they land back on the ground, skidding to a stop.
"Are you hurt, firefly?"
Wait. "What the fuck, are you ripped now?"
"Dabi."
"I'm fine, put me down and get this shit off of me. I have a bird to turn into fried chicken."
Duster does put him down and then Dabi feels his hand, his whole hand, against his cheek through the bag. The fabric turns to dust and he blinks it away as it falls over his head and shoulders. Decay crawls over his skin harmlessly until it reaches the cuffs at his wrists, the ones still tight around his ankles, and those fall away as well. And Tomura really is right here. White hair much longer than before it was when he went into the tank, body corded with fresh muscle, and control over his quirk that Dabi didn't even know would be possible.
No one can really blame him for that all being so hot that he immediately tangles his hands in that thick, soft hair and pulls him into a kiss. Least of all Tomura, because his lover's hands wrap tightly around his hips and pull him in close, kissing him back just as fiercely. Kisses him like they haven't gotten to in two and a half months and after an entire day of worry. Definitely ruins the moment when a gun goes off.
Dabi is expecting pain, or expecting Tomura to be in pain, but he doesn't even flinch as the bullet connects with his shoulder. As he pulls away and glares up somewhere behind him as the bullet is pushed back out of his skin and the wound heals over. He lifts a hand and there's a loud sucking sound as all of the air seems to be pulled out of the vicinity, the pressure changing so fast it makes his ears pop, and then Duster lifts his hand and sends out a blast of air so intense that the closest two cops who were floating, held aloft by Hawks' feathers, turn into ragdolls as their bones are snapped from the force of it, the boom loud enough Dabi's pretty sure his ears will be ringing for a few days, as Hawks retreats back even further from them with the rest of the convoy. It's practically a small army that he'd tried to save before Duster got to them, but he has plenty of feathers for it. Or at least that would be the case if this was like Fukuoka and there was somewhere for him to land as he used the feathers for rescue only, but as it is now, he's visibly struggling to hold himself up on the tiny wings he has left as the others keep the rest of the police and a handful of other heroes aloft, none of them wanting to risk touching the ground after seeing what Shigaraki can do.
A few heroes, including his father, but no, "They didn't send Eraser Head?"
"A double took a parade to Musutafu." Tomura explains, settling one arm back around his waist. "I'm not sure how much longer that distraction will hold, if you want to finish these ones off, firefly?"
"Tempting," But he doesn't know if the one who knocked him out is here. He didn't get a good look at them before they hit him, and he would hate for both of them to end up back in chains after how much effort his lover put into coming and getting him. "But I'm more interested in going home and seeing what else your treatments changed." He presses in even closer, like he'll be able to feel it through the plates of armor beneath his new suit. "Did anything else get even bigger?"
"You're incorrigible."
"You're shockingly romantic. All of my family members?"
"I figured you would be upset that your reveal was ruined."
"I love you."
Tomura's eyes soften and he presses another soft peck to his lips. "I love you too, baby. Come on, let's go home."
The tar claws its way up their throats, and in a matter of seconds, they're gone.

New fucked 3am idea.
Yandere Todoroki Family x youngest Fem Todoroki reader or oc whatever.
Warning Incest and Platonic Yanderes present.
Tumblr media
Firstly, Y/N or Yen was born 8 months after Shoto. And she also has the half cold half hot quirk. [Because I'm so creative right @@]
anyway...
Because Shoto existed and was male, Enji didn't pay anymore attention to her than he did any of his other non-shoto kids. That was until one night at dinner when Yen called Toya Daddy. After this, Enji cared. But like Too Fucking much. He became super protective and overbearing. And rest in peace, Toya and Rei [not literally doe] that night because guess who was getting punished for Yen's mistake. And when Yen started growing into her body, things went from bad to worse for her as Enji's overprotective and overbearing became covertly perverse. Bathing with Yen choosing what she wears. When Rei confronted him about this... she was punished for even thinking it was possible. Enji isn't stupid or delusional, though he knows doing anything directly to her would be wrong, so he doesn't, but he does fantasize.
Rei's relationship with Yen is complicated at best. She is Platonic Yandere for her absolutely. She doesn't let Yen learn how to use her quirk because it could harm her. [Enji support this decision] However, most of Rei's punishments once Enji cared about Yen are Yens fault. Yen made a new friend Rei was getting punished. She kinda has been sneakily feeding Yen herbal anti-quirk remedies. [Enji didn't notice this one, though.. just assuming her weakness comes from the lack of training with her quirk.] She knows about Enji's feelings, having heard him moan their daughters name while he yanks it. But she's too afraid to say anything, thinking he might act on his feelings if anyone knew about them.
Dabi / Toya has the second most fucked relationship with Yen. As said before, Yen saw him as her father figure even though they were only 11 years apart. He sympathizes with her the most she was what father wanted but still wasn't enough. She was only 2 when he ran off, but he was still uncomfortably attached to her. Outsiders who would see photos of the two together would always raise an eyebrow. Why is his hand there as he's holding her up. After he woke up from his coma, he became more stalkery towards his family as a whole, but his sister was the most of all. He even became her only friend [Much to Rei's dismay.] in the form of a pin pal. He absolutely never ever put her in any danger. Ever. Even if it would hurt Enji the most, he couldn't handle that. When he blew the whistle on his abusive family, he pointed out the pedophic incestuous relationship his dad has with Yen. He even accused his mom of knowing and supporting his vulgarities to lessen her own abuse. [This was Rei's biggest fear]
Fuyumi isn't Yandere, not even Platonic yandere. She's just obvious. 100% obvious to her only sisters suffering. She knows dad is more protective of her, but she doesn't see the incest. Or the yandere. She also downplays alot of the abuse. But that's with all of the abuse. Not just Yens.
Natsuo is a Platonic yandere who actually has Yens happiness and health in mind incomparasson to the rest of his yandere family members who are all selfish to some extent. And he is, too. To some extent. [ You'll see in a bit.] He is the only one who is fully aware of all of his families yandereness. When the video came out his response was 'pot calling the kettle big brother what the fuck.' He knows that his mom is poisoning Yen but he doesn't know how and what to do about it. But he knows it's happening. He also knows about Shotos' actions and was very very very supportive of him going off to school and leaving. He regularly invites Yen to play games in his room until she falls asleep and he let's her sleep in his room. He does this to protect her from Shoto.
Last but certainly not least Shoto. He has a love-hate relationship with Yen except with yandere and incest. He is the only one who is physical with her, which is awful but good because at least only one of them is. He and her went through puberty around the same time, so he experimented on her often. Due to them having the same quirk, sometimes he reflects on her, and when he's having a bad day with his quirk, he punishes her for it. He is the only one who actually spanks Yen, but it is never when she needs it. Only when he decided she needed it.
Other things that happened in this au.
When the video came out, instead of bringing everyone together, it did the opposite. Rei being fearful of her youngest daughters virginity [she doesn't have because Shoto. But Rei doesn't know that] tries to run away with Yen. She doesn't get to far because Natsuo who knows about everything and is like 'um no fuck that. you've been poisoning her somehow. You can't be trusted either, and so he takes his baby sister from his mom.
Rei demands a divorce, and she is granted one once the video is released. Enji falls into an intense depression because of his wife leaving and taking his baby girl. And now the world knows about his darkest secret, and no one is supporting him. And because no one in this UN has a PR person, all are under the impression he is a child predator, which he kinda is if your his daughter [which you are oof.] Once the divorce goes through Natsuo takes his mom to court to demand custody of Yen because the poisoning... while all this is happening, Dabi has been secretly planning on kidnapping Yen.
Dabi has a Daddy kink for Yen. So does Enji, but ironically, she never calls him daddy only ever Enji or 'dever.
... there is the 3am Idea. Watch me regret posting this when I wake up for work tomorrow.

Touya Todoroki feels like oxygen is filling his lungs for the first time in his twenty-six-year-old life as he walks out of the Musutafu Child Safety Services Agency. This case has taken months for him to fully tie together, but, once again, he’s gotten a child out of an abusive situation and into a much more loving environment. For most of his childhood, Touya was in a darkly similar situation, being a witness to horrific violence against his mother and youngest brother. After his dream of being a Hero was shut down when his parents had him prescribed medication to quell his Quirk, Touya chose another path…social work. He studied his ass off, and it took years of grueling courses, but he did it. He’s been in the field since he was twenty-two years old, and he wouldn’t change anything. Most certainly…he wouldn’t change anything…because then…he might not have met his partner…Wing Hero: Hawks. If he hadn’t been up late working, he wouldn’t have almost gotten mugged in that alleyway taking shortcuts to his apartment in the city…until a certain winged Hero came to the rescue. Whether it was to Touya’s rescue or the mugger’s could be argued…considering that was a day Touya missed a dose of his meds.
He and Pro Hero Hawks had recently gone public, staying out of the eyes of the press for the early parts of their romantic relationship after being friends for a year. Touya still wasn’t used to having all of the paparazzi outside of the courtrooms whenever he testified. They dogged him with questions he didn’t care about answering…he wished they would ask him about his role in his work rather than “why did Hawks choose you ”. The only backlash has been Hawks’ fanbase…which was to be expected. Whenever they went anywhere out in public, Touya always felt eyes boring into him…jealous and analytical. Hawks, on the other hand, wasn’t fazed whatsoever. Hell, he’d reassert his love for Touya with subtle squeezes of his hand, chaste kisses on the cheek, and sweet whispers.
In truth…their relationship has been…utterly wonderful. Recently, Hawks moved into Touya’s apartment with permission from his handler at the HPSC under the condition that he would report weekly. Finally, after years of being touch-starved, Touya didn’t spend night after night alone…even when they both worked late, eventually, he could find peace with the fact that he would never go without seeing his partner for too long.
Touya can’t wait to see Keigo. Kei had been working an overnight mission, and he didn’t come back from work until after Touya had already left this morning…which probably means he’s been bored out of his mind, lazily scrolling through Touya’s Netflix account that he shares with his siblings. Touya flips through his phone as he walks to the bus stop, waiting for his ride to the apartment complex. He leans against the pole beside the bench before he presses Kei’s contact information, and the phone starts to ring.
“Heyyo,” Keigo Takami’s syrupy sweet voice sings through Touya’s speaker, making his heart flutter.
“Hey, Kei. Everything’s wrapped up on the Kaneda case today. The twins are back with their biological mother,” Touya recounts as the bus pulls up. He promptly boards it, sitting in one of the unoccupied seats after giving the driver his change.
“That’s awesome, T! I’m so damn proud of you,” Keigo grins into the phone, and, once again, Touya feels his heart soar. Touya thrives on praise…emotionally and sexually. He was a shining example of the burned-out-gifted-kid-to-praise-kink pipeline, and Keigo unintentionally took advantage of that. He was always complimenting Touya, adoring the blush that would rise into his pale cheeks and the way he would shuffle his feet.
“Thank you,” Touya whispers, genuinely appreciative of the recognition he barely gets from anyone else. “What have you been up to all day?”
“Oh, y’know. The usual. Lounging around, waiting for my beautiful boy to get home. Can’t get you outta my mind today,” Hawks trills with a mischievous smirk on his face. Touya rolls his eyes.
“You could always go out and do something,” Touya points out, watching the trees whizz by the windows.
“Oh, I’m gonna do something alright. Just waiting for you to get home,” Keigo sneers breathlessly, making Touya raise his eyebrow as the bus rolls to a stop. He nods to the driver as he steps off and walks into the apartment complex. He walks up the stairs, listening to the suspicious silence on the other end of the phone line.
“You still there?”
“ Yeah ,” Hawks’ voice sounds strained through the speaker. “How far away are you?”
Touya promptly puts his keys into the lock of his apartment, and the line goes dead as he walks inside, closing the door behind him as he slips off his shoes.
“Kei?” Touya calls into the darkened apartment, taking note of the dimmed lighting cautiously as he walks toward the bedroom.
“Oh… oh ,” Touya’s cheeks flush beet red as he stands in the open bedroom door, taking in the sight before him.
“Hey, baby,” Keigo sighs, covered in sweat, spread-eagled and naked on the bed, propped up at an angle sitting up against the pillows. His hand is lazily wrapped around his cock, fully erect and gushing.
“You didn’t sound like you were jerking off,” Touya murmurs; this is a first for him to come home to.
“You know I’m trained to keep cool under pressure,” Hawks winks with a sarcastic chuckle, and Touya would’ve rolled his eyes for the eighteenth time today if he wasn’t hypnotized by Keigo’s inhuman erection. He looks painfully hard, and it’s glistening with precome.
“ Fuck. I’ve never been this horny in my life . Villain last night had some sort of lust Quirk…got hit with it. My HPSC doc said it should wear off by tomorrow,” Keigo grunts, tears welling up at the corners of his eyes as he bites his bottom lip. “I wanna fuck your brains out, Touya,” Keigo uncharacteristically moans, “I know you just got off work but I need you…so bad .”
Touya gulps, sweat beading at the back of his neck. He can’t help but think this is attractive…how blatantly Keigo craves him…it’s mesmerizing. Sure, their intimacy is usually supercharged, but this…this carnal need that’s pulsing through Keigo’s veins…it’s different. It’s animal. It’s…unbelievably sexy. Touya’s dick twitches half-hard in his pants, arousal slowly growing the longer he stares at his partner. An orgasm or two doesn’t sound like a bad way to end the day, especially when he’s already on a dopamine high from his success at work. Touya starts unbuttoning his shirt, and Keigo’s pupils practically swallow his irises, a lewd groan leaving Keigo’s lips as his eyes drag down his partner’s body. Touya’s build is average, going from in and out of shape due to his lackluster routine, scrawny in some places and softer in others, but Keigo has always thought he’s gorgeous. The winged Pro almost moans when Touya’s belt and pants hit the floor, giving him a full view of the tent in his boxers. It isn’t long before Touya’s completely naked, crawling into bed.
As soon as Touya’s within reach, Hawks pounces , overcome with desire. The breath is knocked from Touya’s lungs as the Pro grabs him by the shoulders and rolls, pinning him to the bed and looming over him. Before he can blink, their lips are crashing together, desperate and messy, Keigo’s tongue exploring Touya’s mouth. Touya gasps into the kiss, eyelids fluttering, hands roaming Keigo’s muscled form as he succumbs to his lover’s barrage.
“Gonna make you see stars , baby,” Keigo chuckles darkly between sloppy kisses. Touya gasps again when he feels cold, lubed fingers prodding against his hole, gently massaging and kneading the tight ring of muscle. Touya hums in pleasure, muscles tensing as Keigo keeps whispering in his ear for him to relax. Keigo leans back from pinning Touya to the bed, taking his unlubed hand to massage Touya’s ass cheek as the other slowly presses a finger inside. Touya’s back arches ever so slightly as one finger turns into three, gently scissoring him open to Keigo’s delight. It isn’t long before his fingers are replaced with Keigo’s throbbing, hot tip, catching Touya off guard as it catches on his rim.
“ Shit , Kei,” Touya hisses through gritted teeth as the winged Pro slowly pushes in inch by glorious inch until they’re skin-to-skin. Keigo feels like he’s on fire, the greedy lust surging through his body and mind from the after-effects of the lust Quirk. He wants nothing more than to just fuck Touya senseless, but his resolve and concern for Touya are stronger than whatever spell he’s been put under; he doesn’t want to hurt him…not unless he explicitly wanted it.
Touya sighs and curses as Hawks slowly begins rocking his hips, the soft sounds of lovemaking echoing off the walls. Keigo’s panting hard , breaths coming out hot and heavy and strained…like he’s clawing at the walls for more friction. Each thrust is that much harder…that much deeper…that much faster…until he’s bucking his hips at a brutal pace. Touya’s whole body rocks back and forth, the sheets bunching underneath the small of his back and his head just barely avoiding hitting the headboard. Hawks looks like an angel above the white-haired man, wings spread out, feathers curling, the dimmed light of the bedroom enveloping him in a halo. The view for Hawks is almost as captivating, watching the sweat bead on Touya’s brow…the way his face contorts into pure ecstasy…the way his muscles twitch with every touch. It’s too much. Keigo’s gonna come early.
“ Fuck ,” Hawks’ voice cracks as his vision blurs and he comes… hard . Touya groans at the feeling of the hot ropes coating his insides, whimpering as Keigo continues grinding, cock still massaging his walls. Keigo carefully slips out with a whine, cock still rock-hard to Touya’s shock, smeared in white. Before Touya can complain, Hawks speaks up.
“Touya,” He whimpers pitifully, which takes the white-haired man aback. Usually, he’s the one who’s submissive during sex. Yet, it seems like Keigo’s walls have suddenly crumbled to the ground in such a way that he’s pleading.
“Fuck me… please ,” Keigo begs like a bitch in heat, and it awakens something deep in Touya’s gut.
“You…hah…want me to top?” Touya stammers, catching his breath from the rampant sex session. Keigo nods vigorously…embarrassingly needy.
“Please,” Keigo mumbles, cheeks flushed and eyes wide.
“Will it…will it hurt you?” Touya speaks slowly, the thought of burying himself inside Keigo sounding remarkably thrilling…and his body is still screaming for release, muscles twitching.
“I’ve done it before, and I fingered myself earlier. I’ll be fine,” Keigo hurriedly blurts, seemingly impatient. Touya gulps, trying to process what he’s about to do. He’s blushing like a virgin, which isn’t anything new considering Keigo was the one who took his virginity.
“Okay,” Touya grunts, “On your back. I wanna look at you.”
Keigo complies before grabbing his ankles and spreading his legs, making the heat rush to Touya’s cheeks as he sees his lover in such a vulnerable position. Touya swallows hard once more as he grabs the bottle of lube from the nightstand, wincing from the motion. His ass is still sore, and he can feel the cum leaking between his legs. He shakes the thought away; they can wash the sheets in the morning. He shudders as he fists his dripping cock with the lube, prepping himself to fuck Hawks into next week. The Pro Hero waits, saliva pooling on his tongue at the thought. Touya inhales sharply when his tip tenderly rubs against Hawks’ hole, and a long, low moan bursts from his lips when he slips inside almost effortlessly. It feels so fucking good. Definitely better than Hawks’ mouth or his hand. Keigo clenches down deliberately, squeezing Touya’s dick in a way that makes him groan, and he squirms to get deeper inside. Keigo pushes back down against Touya’s cock, helping him plunge further into his guts.
“Fffuck…you feel good, Kei,” Touya whimpers before he starts languidly thrusting. Each movement is like a lightning strike through Touya’s cock…he’s not gonna last long either.
"Yeah…hah…fuck me like you mean it, T,” Keigo groans, laughs bubbling between lewd sighs as his cock bounces against his abs. Touya doesn’t need any more encouragement before his hips snap against Keigo’s ass. Touya’s chest heaves like he’s running a marathon, jackhammering wildly into his lover.
“Yes…yes… yes, Kei~fuck !” Touya comes with a choked sob, the climax wracking his brain as his hips stutter; Hawks writhes beneath him, whimpering as he attempts to get more friction.
“Don’t worry,” Touya gasps, “I’m gonna make you fucking come.”
Touya takes deep breaths, bending down to kiss Keigo as his cock twitches, slowly rehardening inside him. The winged Pro melts beneath his touch. In one burst of strength, Touya pulls out and flips Keigo, grabbing his hips and jerking them, slipping inside him once again. Keigo yelps, facedown in the pillow as Touya traces his hands up his back, fingering through the feathers in his wings and stimulating him. Keigo’s muffled wail of pleasure is music to Touya’s ears, and he reaches around to wrap his hand around Keigo’s throbbing dick.
“ Touya ~ ah !” Hawks moans, drooling onto the pillow as Touya starts rutting his hips and jerking him off simultaneously. The lovers groan and pant, heat coiling in the pits of their stomachs as they’re overcome with pleasure. Touya shivers at the overstimulation, gritting his teeth as it overloads his senses. Hawks can’t take it anymore. It’s all so much all at once.
“I’m-I’m-I’m~” Hawks stutters, voice pitching higher and higher as his cock twitches, and Touya cuts him off with a breathy “me too” before abruptly leaning forward and latching his teeth onto Keigo’s neck. Hawks comes all over the comforter, cock convulsing in Touya’s hand, and Touya grunts as his own orgasm floods his senses. He bites hard enough to bruise, teeth sinking into Keigo’s flesh, and Keigo mumbles something unintelligible as Touya releases his grip, pulling out his flagging erection. He collapses on the bed beside Keigo, who shudders, feathers flexing as he attempts to sit up.
Touya’s out of breath, staring up at his lover with a bleary-eyed expression, overwhelmed and overflowing with the orgasmic high. However, he sees the guttural need in Keigo’s eyes, and realizes that he’s still raring to go another round.
“ Fuck , man,” Touya sighs, exhausted and yet confusingly aroused at the thought of being enough for Keigo to be absorbed in his libido.
“One more, baby… please …just one more I promise. Lemme fuck you. You can just lay back and feel good,” Hawks croons, tracing Touya’s jawline with one hand and cupping the side of his face lovingly. He bends down, pausing inches away from Touya’s lips…and Touya’s psyche practically implodes, overcome with nothing but desire as he grabs Keigo’s face, colliding their lips together. Keigo moans Touya’s name into his mouth, tasting sweeter than honey on Touya’s tongue.
“I want you.” The words rumble in Keigo’s throat as he breaks the kiss, staring into Touya’s eyes with pure worship.
“Do your worst, Daddy,” Touya snickers mockingly, eyes flirtatious and full of the azure flames being held back. Hawks’ face contorts into a sultry smile as he grabs hold of Touya’s calves, pushing his legs up and out, pressing his knees to his chest.
Keigo pushes into Touya’s hole, swollen and still leaking cum from the first round, but Touya doesn’t seem to mind. Especially with the way he cries out, toes curling and legs quivering.
Touya can see the bulge from Keigo fucking him, and it makes his cock twitch that much more as he leans his head back into the pillow.
“Last one, baby. Fuck , last one,” Keigo pants, breath hitching and voice pitching higher and higher as he pounds into his partner. Touya’s screaming Keigo’s name now, pain and pleasure mixing so beautifully, forgetting for a moment that he has neighbors.
“ Touya …oh fuck…oh fuck , fuck, fuck !” Keigo wails, balls slapping against Touya’s ass faster and faster with every rock of his hips as his arousal consumes him. Touya’s cock bounces pitifully against his stomach, reddening into a purple as wanton moans are punched from his lungs. The sounds of the lovers echo through Touya’s apartment, sounding like a porno connecting to a Bluetooth speaker. Touya’s crying now, emotions absolutely destroying him, and, if he wasn’t medicated, he’d be bursting into flames. He’s crying from the pleasure, crying from the pain, crying from the overstimulation…but he doesn’t want it to stop. Not yet. Not until they’ve both reached the earth-shattering high that they’re chasing so intensely.
“Fuck me, Keigo , fuck me~!” Touya slurs, mouth hanging open, each exhale releasing as a lewd whimper. Hawks’ wings flex behind him, feathers puffing up as heat coils in the pit of his stomach, tremors rolling through his body.
“Take it, baby. Take it all. Take all of my fucking seed, baby,” Hawks hisses fervently, nails digging into Touya’s calves as he keeps his legs pinned to his chest, up and apart so he can reach the deepest parts of his lover.
Hawks comes with a sudden cry out, panting and groaning as he keeps fucking Touya through his own orgasm, painting his insides white. The sensation sends Touya over the edge, and he gasps, choking on his own sobs as he comes so hard that some of it hits his chest. The air is thick with their huffs and puffs of air, gasping for breath after drowning in pure pleasure. Their chests rise and fall as Touya’s hands weakly grasp for Keigo, who immediately slides his hands to Touya’s shoulders and presses a deep, longing kiss to his spit-slicked lips. Touya whimpers pathetically into Keigo’s mouth, arms shaking and draping around the back of the hero’s neck as they embrace.
After everything, Keigo’s finally blissed out, balls empty and aching.
“Gonna pull out,” He whispers as he breaks the kiss, and Touya nods, sniffling from the tears that are still making their way down his flushed and sweaty face. Tenderly, Hawks pulls out of Touya, sighing in relief before he presses his lips to Touya’s forehead. Feathers swirl, haphazard and slightly uncoordinated as they go into Touya’s bathroom and bring back warm rags. Hawks helps Touya sit up, both of the lovers quivering and sore and out of breath as they each take a rag and gently start to dab at one another’s skin. Keigo blots away the tears streaking down Touya’s face. Touya wipes at the bruise he made from biting into Keigo’s neck. They finally clean the come off of each other before the feathers throw the rags into the laundry basket in the corner of the room. Keigo wraps his wings around his partner, pulling him close as Touya draws the covers over the both of them. They indulge in the feeling of one another’s warmth, skin still buzzing from the overstimulating orgasms, oxytocin and dopamine still pumping through their veins. The relief is palpable. Their love pollutes the air…pollutes their souls…they’re drowning in devotion for one another as they hold each other. Touya’s ear is against Keigo’s chest, listening to the steady thump of his heartbeat.
“That was…something,” Touya laughs sleepily, yawning as his eyelids grow heavy from the sensual workout.
“Mmmhm,” Keigo hums sweetly, running his fingers through Touya’s fluffy white locks.
“I love you, Keigo,” Touya murmurs, catching a final glimpse of the hero’s gorgeous golden eyes as he closes his ocean blues.
“I love you too, darling…Get some good rest,” Keigo whispers, nuzzling into his forehead as they both drift into dreams.

Tumblr media
“Toya, are you sure it’s okay for us to be doing this..? Dad will kill us if he finds us out here without him or Mom..” Natsuo quietly asks, his body language screaming how nervous he is as they all walk along.
Toya lets out an annoyed huff, waving a dismissive hand in the air, “If you’re going to be such a scared little baby, then you can go back to the house.” He says without turning around to face his younger brother.
“We’ll be fine, Nats. We’ll only be down at the beach for a bit; play in some waves, make sandcastles, admire the stars or whatever, then we’ll head back.” Azusa tells Natsuo, reassuringly wrapping an arm over his shoulders.
“Yeah, Nats! C’mon, this is going to be so fun! It’s a full moon tonight, so we have plenty of light to play wave tag in!” Fuyumi exclaims with a wide smile as she skips across the sand.
With another huff, this time one of slight guilt for being snappish, Toya turns around to face his three siblings, “Exactly what they said, Squirt. Look, I just want to make the most of this vacation. You know that Dad doesn’t get a lot of leave days, so who knows when we’ll be back and dammit a night swim at the beach is something everyone should experience! Even you brats!” He lightheartedly jabs with a playful smile as he continues to walk backward on the beach.
“Hey-”
“-m not a brat-”
“Toyaaaa-”
Azusa, Natsuo, and Fuyumi all playfully whine out with giggles and smiles on their faces as they all charge their older brother. A game of tag ensues; laughs echo in the air, sand and water being flung at one another, and pure joy exudes from each of the Todoroki siblings.
A yelp escapes Azusa’s mouth when she feels Toya squish a fat handful of sand into the top of her head, ensuring that grains of sand bury themselves in her hair.
“Oh my god, Toya! You are so dea-”
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
“Attention Rangers, report to the Mess Hall for breakfast, then report to Bay 3 at 0600 immediately following breakfast for your co-pilot and Jaeger assignments. Attention Rangers, report-”
Azusa groans at the AI voice grating at her ears and she blindly reaches a hand out to shut off the alarm and the accompanying repetitive message. As she pulls herself from her bed, she tries to cling to the faint feeling of happiness she gained from the memory she relived in her sleep. She makes her way to her dresser, pausing before opening up the sock drawer to pick up a photo of her late brother.
“Today is the day I officially become a pilot, Toya.. I’ll even get to pilot your old Jaeger. D-don’t worry, Toya, I’ll m-make sure t-to take care of her f-for you.” Azusa whispers to the photo, barely getting her promise out past the painful lump in her throat. She gently sets the photo back down on the dresser and takes a few deep breaths then proceeds to get ready for the day.
Once dressed and as mentally ready as she can be, Azusa leaves her room and heads for the Mess Hall. Fuyumi never showed up to accompany her, which happens from time to time especially when Rangers are woken up earlier than usual. A small and quiet voice whispers how much it wants to be in bed still in the back of Azusa’s mind as the elevator descends. She lets out a tired sigh as she steps off of the elevator when it stops but quickly rights herself out as she enters the Mess Hall.
Azusa heads for the food line when she’s roughly shoulder-checked by somebody quickly moving past her. “Watch it,” she hisses out just before she registers the tall, broad, and blonde-haired being cutting in front of her. Sticking up his middle finger, Bakugo turns to shoot Azusa an arrogant smirk before turning back toward the stack of trays at the start of the food line. Azusa’s jaw clenches, her blood immediately boiling, but before she can spit any venom at Bakugo, Kendo and Tetsutetsu come up to her.
“Asshole,” Kendo says harshly under her breath as she casts a glare at the back of Bakugo’s head.
“I feel sorry for whoever his co-pilot ends up being,” Tetsutetsu adds as the three of them grab their trays and join the food line.
“Hopefully whoever it is can help him pull his head out of his ass.” Azusa quips quietly, causing her two friends to snicker as all three of them watch Bakugo’s knuckles go white from how hard he grips his tray.
Breakfast goes by without any more spats, surprisingly enough to Azusa. She had to hide it in the moment but she was genuinely shocked that Bakugo hadn’t attempted to fight the trio when they were shit-talking him literally right behind his back. All she had gotten for her comment was an ugly, snarl-twisted glare shot at her before he stomped off to “his” table.
All too soon, Rangers across the entire Mess Hall began standing to clear their places and head for the Shatterdome. An air of nervousness and excitement settles amongst the collective of newly graduated Rangers as they all gather around the elevators. Azusa blankets her nerves with perpetual stoicism and forced calm. She observes that Kendo has chosen to take occasional deep breaths while Tetsutetsu finds that yammering on endlessly about random crap soothes his nerves. It’s only when the group of new Rangers are all standing at attention at the mouth of Bay 3 with Marshal Todoroki and Marshal Aizawa in front of them that a suffocating silence ensue.
Marshal Todoroki’s judgmental gaze sweeps over the group as Marshal Aizawa’s stern gaze serves as a silent reminder to take this seriously. Marshal Todoroki clears his throat, making everyone tighten up their positions.
“At ease, Rangers.” Marshal Todoroki finally says after a couple of moments of tense silence. “Before we announce the co-pilot pairings and Jaeger assignments, I wanted to remind you all that this is not a game. This is not your childhood dream nor is it your chance at 15 minutes of fame. This is war. You are Rangers now, fighting for the sake of saving humanity.” Marshal Todoroki firmly states, his tone deadly serious.
“This is reality and in this reality, in this war, you are all putting your lives on the line. You may die. Your co-pilots may die. Your friends may die. But with those facts of this hellish reality looming over our heads, I thank you for your service and hope that you all live to see the day we win this war.” Marshal Todoroki ends his speech, both he and Marshal Aizawa straightening up and saluting.
The group of Rangers, collectively torn between shitting their pants from fear and keeping their cool, straightens up and salutes back. Azusa, while fully grasping the seriousness of the situation, inwardly cringes a bit at the lack of encouragement from her father. ‘Did I really expect him to be any sort of encouraging, though?’ She ponders bitterly as she and the rest of the group relax their positions.
“Onto announcing the co-pilot pairings and Jaeger assignments,” Marshal Aizawa says, drawing every pair of anticipation-filled eyes on him.
As Marshal Aizawa read off the names of pairs of co-pilots and their assigned Jaegers, Azusa’s stomach began to churn a bit. As much as she tried to will away the feelings of nervousness and slight dread, the roiling feeling refused to go. Occasionally her eyes connected with those of her father’s, making matching his steely and stoic gaze the only easy thing about this whole event.
“Rangers Kirishima and Tetsutetsu, you both will be the pilots of the Jaeger; Steel Riot.” Marshal Aizawa announces, then sends a sharp glare at the two as they move to high-five and cheer, stopping them in their tracks.
“Rangers Hado and Kendo, you both will be piloting the Jaeger; Battle Fist.” Marshal Aizawa continues, letting the smiles the girls shoot each other slide despite the air of professionalism.
“Rangers Bakugo and Todoroki, both of you will be piloting the Jaeger; Bravo Inferno.” Marshal Aizawa says, casting a slightly wary glance between Azusa and Bakugo.
As soon as she had heard Bakugo’s name in the same sentence as hers, every single other word out of the man’s mouth became muffled by static. Her stomach now burns with a nasty mix of anger, dread, and loathing. She hears a curse-filled outburst that undoubtedly comes from Bakugo, but she is too focused on glaring at her father to acknowledge the brash blonde.
Marshal Todoroki pointedly avoids meeting Azusa’s eyes, his stoic gaze shifting over the other Rangers. Azusa clenches her jaw, her teeth grinding together as she continues to glare, half registering the stern words from Marshal Aizawa’s reprimand toward Bakugo. She can’t understand why her father or Marshal Aizawa thought that pairing her with Bakugo would be a good idea.
‘There is absolutely no way we will be able to work together, let alone Drift smoothly! This doesn’t make any fucking sense! He’s a stubborn asshole who will get us both killed if we’re even able to Drift successfully! Son of a fucking bitch-’ Azusa seethes as she half listens to Marshal Aizawa continue with assignments. Eventually, the assignment announcements come to an end and the group of Rangers are being led to Loccent’s command center while the first Jaeger and its pilots are being prepped for their first test run.
Azusa and the other newly graduated Rangers watch as team after team take their turns with their Jaegers, going through their first Drifts. Her peers cheer and congratulate each other with every successful display. Azusa offers her own words of praise when Tetsu and Kendo come back from each of their own successful Drift sequences with their co-pilots. Finally, the moment that she has been dreading comes when Marshal Aizawa tells her and Bakugo to go suit up.
The tense and rage-filled air between Azusa and Bakugo could be cut with a knife as the two don’t utter a word, let alone spare a glance at each other while techs help them suit up. The two enter the Conn-Pod of Bravo Inferno, Bakugo stomping his way over to the right-side pilot harness without even asking what side Azusa would prefer. As much as she would have preferred piloting from the right, she lets it go with an annoyed roll of her eyes.
Mechanisms lock Azusa into place when she steps into the foot-holds and places her back against the harness. The soft hissing and clicks coming from her right tell her that Bakugo hasn’t decided to leave the Conn-Pod in an anger-filled rage. Azusa takes a deep breath, using the cool oxygen being pumped into her helmet as an aid to shove down her growing dread.
“Alright, Rangers, let yourselves flow through the Drift. Remember Random Access Brain Impulse Triggers, or RABIT, don’t chase it and don’t fight it. Just like in your simulations, do not get stuck in the memories. Are you ready?” Marshal Aizawa’s voice coaches through the Comms, his voice firm but holding the slightest amount of hesitance.
“Whatever! Let’s just get this over with!” Bakugo snarls out, smothering her confirmation of readiness. Marshal Aizawa doesn’t even bother reprimanding him, just lets out a tired sigh before getting off of the Comms.
Azusa straightens up and tries to force the tension from her body as the AI voice speaking through the Comms counts down the seconds til neural handshake. She leans back a bit and closes her eyes, the final seconds ticking down. A gasp is ripped from her mouth and her body jerks as her consciousness is sucked into a flurry of memories, both hers and Bakugo’s.
Flashes of her childhood play before her eyes, good moments blurring together into bad. She sees herself running around and laughing as she chases her siblings. Watches as her past self cheers and gloats over beating Toya in a video game. Feels it when memories of her father angrily shouting at her and her siblings when they did something wrong or embarrassed him in some way fly by. Unaware of her body’s labored breathing, new memories flash across her mind’s eye, memories that are new to her but not to Bakugo.
Azusa watches as a younger version of the blonde marches across a playground seemingly commanding those that follow him. Another memory bleeds through and she sees an older, female version of Bakugo cleaning his younger version’s knee. The woman, his mother Azusa assumes, says something that makes Bakugo’s younger self reluctantly giggle before that memory fades into another. This time, Azusa sees a teenage Bakugo gripping tightly onto a family photo. His face is twisted into anger and anguish, tears sliding down his cheeks and his jaw clenched. Everything fades out completely and with another gasp, Azusa is dropped back into reality, feelings and thoughts that aren’t hers invading her brain.
“Right hemisphere calibrating,” the AI voice from before guides, as Azusa and Bakugo lift their right hands up in sync.
“Left hemisphere calibrating,” the AI continues, Bakugo and Azusa raising their left hands up in sync.
“Holy shit,” Bakugo breathes out over the Comms and Azusa can feel his awe as much as she can feel her own.
The pair’s thoughts fall into sync seamlessly as they move to show off a bit. Moving together fluidly the two raise their fists and bend their knees, getting themselves and the massive machine they now control into a fighting position. Feeding off of the impressed looks and cheers from onlookers, they quickly move into a different stance. Their brains and bodies following the same train of thought, they straighten up and bring one fisted hand to the palm of their opened one. Bakugo’s overwhelmingly confident and flashy ego reminds Azusa of Toya, a bit of sadness flashing through her mind when-
“Where the fuck is he?! Where is Toya?! He can’t be dead! Please, no no no-”
Flinching at the painful drop back into reality, Azusa groans and tries to make out what the voices she’s hearing are saying, “-roki and Ranger Bakugo, you are both out of alignment! Please try to re-stabilize yourselves!” Iida’s slightly panicked voice rings through Azusa’s ears.
“I-I’m sorry, I’m good now-” Azusa tries to say, but she is cut off by Marshal Aizawa getting on the Comms.
“You’re stabilizing, Todoroki, but Bakugo is still way out of it! Bring him back, now!” Marshal Aizawa commands with urgency.
“Dammit- Bakugo, listen to me! Snap out of it! It’s just a memory, you have to come back to reality!” Azusa shouts across the three-foot gap between her and Bakugo.
Unfortunately, nothing seems to be getting through to the blonde as he stands in place, stock still. His eyes have a faraway look in them, his face fearful and his hands clenched into fists at his sides. But Azusa keeps trying to get to him, closing her eyes and sinking into her mind to try to find where his went.
When she opens her eyes again it’s raining and she’s standing among the rubble remains of a building. Her gaze sweeps the area, not finding her co-pilot anywhere but instead catching on the form of his younger self. This version of Bakugo appears to be the same teenage version from the earlier memory. Once again, she looks around at all of the broken pieces of the building and pieces together that it used to be an apartment complex.
She looks back at teenage Bakugo when she hears him cough and groan as he moves to sit up from where he is lying. In the distance, she can hear helicopters and there’s a slight rumble from the ground beneath her, but all she can focus on is the boy in front of her. Teenage Bakugo stands up slowly with a dazed and pained look on his face as he grabs at his bleeding torso. More blood runs down the side of his face from his hairline and overall he doesn’t look too good.
Azusa watches as he looks around, clarity coming back to him as concern floods his features. He stumbles forward, desperately searching for something among the rubble surrounding them.
“Ma? Pops?” He calls out, his raspy and cracking voice echoing throughout the destroyed landscape. A few tears escape his eyes and he furiously wipes them away before continuing his search for his parents. A few feet away from where he had woken up, Bakugo stops cold in his tracks.
“N-no,” he brokenly whispers out, looking down at a pile of broken concrete slabs.
Azusa slowly walks up behind him, morbid curiosity getting the better of her, admittedly. A horrified gasp leaves her mouth as her stomach lurches at the sight of a hand sticking out from beneath the rubble. Slender fingers lay slightly crumpled and limp on the ground, a silver wedding band coated in dust sitting snugly on the ring finger. Acid burns at the back of Azusa’s throat when she recognizes the small ruby adorning the ring.
“No, no, no! Damn it!” Bakugo’s gut-wrenching shouting breaks Azusa’s attention away from her horrible realization.
Turning to her left, Azusa sees teenage Bakugo on his knees next to a body half-covered by rubble. Part of a re-bar sticks out of the side of the body’s chest and her nausea hits full force, once more, as Azusa walks over to Bakugo. When she reaches him, his face is buried in his hands as he sobs and his shoulders shake violently. Azusa looks down at the body before them and with a broken heart she realizes that it’s the man from the family photo from the other memory; Bakugo’s father.
Lost within the shared feelings of loss, grief, and pain, neither she nor Bakugo registers the sound of emergency personnel making their arrival. It’s only when a paramedic is crouched down in front of Bakugo do either of them briefly break from their grief. Bakugo, expressionless and silent, gets ushered to an ambulance with a dust-covered picture frame in his hands, the glass of it shattered and the whole thing is overall broken.
Teenage Bakugo passing out in the back of that ambulance is what snaps them back to reality, both of their bodies giving out on them. Alarms are blaring throughout the Conn-Pod and voices shout at them through the Comms. Looking out of the window of the Conn-Pod, Azusa watches the arms of the Jaeger slowly fall to its sides. As the glow of them fades out, she realizes that one of the weapons had been engaged during the traumatic flashback and a dulled shiver runs down her spine.
Ignoring the continued shouting from whoever is on the Comms, Azusa removes her helmet and releases herself from her harness. She rushes over to Bakugo, hands out ready to steady the man as he stumbles from his harness’s release. He rights himself, though, and shakes the look of sadness from his face to replace it with a harsh glare. He rips his helmet off as he steps away from Azusa.
“Get the fuck away from me.” He seethes out before running a hand over his face to wipe away the remaining tears. Shoving past her with little care, Bakugo storms his way out of the Conn-Pod leaving Azusa alone to deal with the torrent of emotions flooding her brain.

Hidden Childhood Love
5000+ words
Dabi X Female reader
18+, minors dni, f!reader, pet names, trigger warning for self-harm, drugs, and alcohol, angst, burn, dom/sub,
As a kid, you were always beside Toya Todoroki no matter what it was, but also had two other friends, Hawks and Shigaraki. He was your childhood sweet heart. You never left each other’s side and he hated to go home because of his pro hero dad endeavor. He didn’t have an easy childhood but nor did you. Your parents, who were always heroes, were never home and you basically had to raise yourself. You were result of a quirk marriage just like Toya. Your father was a drunk and when he was home, he was always drunk, he became aggressive and abusive towards you and your mother.
When you found out Toya had died in an accident and all that was left was his jaw bone, it crushed you. He had promised you he would have never left you. You cried for months begging for him to come back as he was the only one who knew about your home life. That was when your mental health had started to really decline. He was your whole life; you both grew up from the time you were 5 starting school together.
You held onto a sterling silver chain with a heart locket that has his name edged into it around your neck that Toya gave you when you both were kids. He did a few small things like cutting grass and walking peoples pets to earn money to get you the necklace for your 12th day, in fact it wasn’t a few weeks before he died. Toya was 13 and you were 12 before he died. It wasn’t long after that your parents were killed in a mission dealing with villains. You were all alone now at the young age of 13. You inherited the house from your parents.
The years have passed, 11 years in fact, you were now 23. The thought of Toya comes across your mind, you never took the necklace off he gave you as it was a reminder that he existed. Not a single day goes by when you don’t have Toya on your mind. It felt like torture, your life was never the same after you lost Toya.
You walked thru the door of your house, taking off your shoes, and walking towards the living room plopping down with a sigh. You looked up at the ceiling as thoughts and memories flooded your head and tears streamed down your face. Your house was empty, cold, and you felt alone. Life went on for you after losing three people with in a few weeks. The only other people who were by your side was Hawks as Tomura Shigaraki was taken in by someone. You and Hawks grew closer over the years but it wasn’t the same as you and Toya.
Your phone dinged with a message. When you pulled your phone out of your pocket you seen a text,
Hey y/n, I got a guy I want you to meet. I think you will find his ideals similar to yours. Read 12:42pm
You huffed and got up to change out of your clothes and shower.
When you got out the shower you wrapped your towel around you to find clothes. You found a black skirt, a skillet band t shirt, thigh high socks, black bra with a pair of black panties that around the hips had smaller pieces sewn together, they were your favorite as they were so much comfier compared to others, and your knee-high converse. You finished getting ready and walked out the door texting hawks.
*thud*
“Ow!” You groaned rubbing your head and looked up.
“Hi y/n” hawks smiled
“Well hi bird brain.” You giggled, as kids you’ve always picked on hawks. “I just sent you a te…”
Hawks phone dinged.
You smiled “well you got it”
“Come on I got someone who’s looking for more people to join him in the LOV. With your fire quirk as a perfect long ranged attack, medical quirk to heal everyone in a time of need, and the fact you’re skilled in close combat with weapons.”
“LOV? Why?” You looked at him.
“Come on y/n I know you’re not happy. You haven’t since you lost everyone, mainly your mom and Toya. You got to get out and do something. You got to get out of your mind, go and have some fun or revenge whatever you'd like.”
“I mean the heroes are the ones who sent my parents to be killed by the villains, I’m not that big of a fan of villains, so why would I join them?”
“Just hear him out y/n. You might be surprised” Hawks said grabbing your arm and walking.
“Alright, alright.”
As you walked together hawks led you to what looked like an abandoned warehouse, but it was far from just some abandoned building. You stared at it.
“Here?” You asked
“Don’t let this place full you. There are several villains here. They basically live here. Shigaraki had this place remodeled for everyone who joins so they have their own room and even bathroom so they can stay here if they need somewhere to go as they are all criminals.”
“Shigaraki? He’s who you’re bringing me to talk to?”
“Yeah, he’s the leader of the League of Villains”
“Huh, look at shiggy growing up in the world.”
“You know Shigaraki?”
“Uh yeah, we grew up together for a while.”
When you and Hawks walked in the warehouse was more than you were expecting, there was brick everywhere, hardwood flooring, with yellow lighting. That's when you heard the familiar voice coming from a room to the right. You pushed the door open walking into a bar area. A guy who looked like he was covered in a purple smoke kind of thing stood behind the bar cleaning a glass. To his right near the wall, you saw a tall, slender, cerulean blue eyes, and black-haired guy covered in scars that looked to be held together by staples. He looked over his glass of whiskey at you and choked glaring at Hawks. To the left of the guy behind the bar, you seen who had the familiar voice.
“Shiggy!!” You screamed and bolted towards him.
He turned and looked at you as you tackled him out of the bar stool to the floor.
“Y/n? How long has it been? How’ve you been?”
You chuckled “11 years actually. I could be better honestly.”
You stood up and reaching to Shigaraki to pull him up off the hardwood floor. You turned and looked at Hawks who was getting a death glare from the scarred guy. A blond-haired girl dressed in a school uniform walked thru the door with a guy dressed in a whole-body suit and having two different conversations. The blond girl got excited to see you, another girl in the LOV.
“Shigaraki is this the new recruit?” She asked.
“Everyone this is y/n, she’s a childhood friend of mine.” Shigaraki grabbed your waist and pulled you to him. “Y/n this is-“
“Toga! Toga Himiko! Is so awesome to have another girl here! This is twice!” She pointed to the guy beside her
“Kurigiri” the guy behind the bar said putting a glass away
“Dabi” a rough voice coming from the scarred guy.
You looked at everyone and smiled “nice to meet you all” Hawks made eye contact with Dabi and then Shigaraki who looked at them both low key.
Toga seen your necklace and screamed
“Are you in love with someone?!”
You stopped in your tracks and tensed up. You smiled slightly
“you could say that, but they aren’t alive anymore” you lowered your head.
“I’m so sorry!” She pulled you from Shigaraki and hugged you.
As hugging Toga, you glanced over at Dabi as he lit a cigarette taking a long drag off it. He made direct eye contact with you. It felt like he could burn a whole thru your soul, his eyes were alluring but harsh, dominating, and dark. He was a mystery to you but at the same time his vibe was so familiar to you.
Once the everyone left it was just you and Shigaraki sitting at the bar with Kurigiri. He explained his plans in full detail as you listened to him becoming interested more and more like Hawks claimed you would be. When he ws done talking you decided to agree. He handed you a key to your room in the warehouse.
“use it whenever you want Kat, I know you have your parents house but if you don’t wanna be alone you got us all here.”
A few weeks had passed since you agreed to join the LOV. Shigaraki knew you could stand on your own at the front lines with your quirks of fire power and medical power, with your medical knowledge, combat skills, determinate mindset, and strength so he put you in the vanguard to help and provide medical care when needed. You were on missions with Toga, Dabi, Twice, Kurigiri, and Shigaraki himself. You were a force to be reckoned with. He was glad to have you on his team.
You were walking down to your room that Shigaraki gave you in the warehouse and knocked into someone.
“Watch it kitten” you heard a husky voice
You looked up to see Dabi. You paused, making contact with his eyes, becoming in a trance that took your breath.
“S-sorry I wasn’t paying attention.”
He seen a shine reflect from your nec, seeing your necklace.
“She kept it this whole time” the thought to himself
You watched him turn back and scuff walking off. He had a very tough exterior it seemed. He seemed harsh with his words every time he spoke.
When you made it to your room, you laid a crossed the bed catching your breath. There was something about Dabi that intoxicated you. The smokey Sandlewood scent that emitted off him was strong but not to strong it was overwhelming. His blue eyes were captivating. He stayed in your mind and you couldn’t shake his presence was so familiar to Toya. You thought you might actually be able to move on and find someone who you could be with but would it be worth the possible pain again. You shook your head
“What am I thinking” you say with a sigh “I can’t be with a villain. Not like that.” The constant fear of them not coming home bothered you especially after being alone for so long. “Fuck this, I need a drink”
You get up and head to the bar area. Kurigiri standing there and noticed you in the doorway
“Everything okay Kat?” He asked
You looked up “what, oh yeah, I’m fine, just need a drink, got some stuff on my mind is all.” you smile and then heard a cough. You turned to one of the booths to see Dabi sitting there with a whole bottle of whiskey and a glass. His face was red across his cheeks clearly, he had a bit too much to drink before you walked in here. He hadnt noticed you yet till you giggled.
“looks like im not the only with the idea.”
Dabi looked up at you with a pained look in his eyes that made you wonder what was wrong. He always seemed to have no emotions.
“you could say that.”
You sat at the bar and looked back at Kuragiri.
“Whatcha want dear”
“Give me a frozen mudslide”
“Yes ma’am”
A few minutes passed and your mudslide was slid down the bar to you. “Thanks”
You were playing with the hem of your skirt when you felt warmth behind you.
“Why don’t we see how good you actually are” was in your ear. Your body tingled beneath the warm figure behind you and breathe on your ear. The voice was familiar.
“If you think you can keep up…Dabi” you smirked
“Oh kitten you just don’t know what I’m capable of” he chuckled
His voice sent a shiver down your spine.
“clearly you don’t know what im capable of either” your remark sparked a flame in his eyes.
“Oh hi bird brains” you felt a cold air come from behind you hearing the door open as Dabi turned to see who it was.
“Dabi” he smirks. “What’s this about a fight I hear between you and y/n”
“I just want a little sparring match to test her skills for myself is all”
“He thinks I can’t beat his ass but I think the whiskey is getting to his head” you giggled after finishing your drink.
“Kat that’s not what I think it is, is it?” Hawks giving you a certain look
You turn around with the glass “what this oh yeah it’s just one I promise” you smile and slide the glass to Kurigiri.
You, Dabi, and hawks go to the training room. On the way you grabbed your katana out of your room putting it on your side.
“I’ll be the ref and step in if it gets too rough” Hawks said
“Fine by me”
“Sounds good” Dabi walked to one end while you walked to the other.
“Ready, start”
Dabi sent a blue flame wall towards you. You jumped up moving out of the way launching a fire ball at him. He was behind you in a flash grabbing your hands behind your back and one hand around your throat. You snarled
“Don’t underestimate me doll”
“I could say the same to you” you tapped his leg just enough to use your medical quirk which cuts off allnerve endings and blood flow to any body part you touch and brought him down to his knees but not before he was pulling you with him.
“I’m not letting go of that pretty neck of yours” he whispered in your ear and nipped it. You scuffed grabbing a knife out of your pocket and slashing at him grazing his arm as he tried to dodge it he released your neck leaving a warm tingling sensation where his hand was. Fabric hung of Dabis sleeve reveleaing normal skin up towards his left shoulder. You threw your knife at him as a diversion and flung another fireball at him right behind he couldn’t block. His bright blue flames created a wall that protected him putting your fireball out.
“nice try”
You growled getting angry now, noones been able to keep up with your fire power till now. Charging towards him unleashing a stream of fire. He dodge it catching your arm throwing you down on the ground. His grip was soft from the skin on his hands but also very rough from brute force. You hit the ground with a thud and groaned coughing as the air got knocked out of you.
“Okay that’s enough” hawks stepped in.
“Come on we just got started”
“Both of you need to go to bed. Your drinks are kicking in”
“I’m fine she’s the light weight” Dabi smarted off turning his back.
“says the one whos cheeks were red when I walked in the bar. You didn’t even notice me till I said something to you.
Hawks walk up to you and pull you up. “Don’t let his words get to you. He’s dangerous and directly under shigaraki stregnth wise that’s why he captain of the Vanguard Action squad.”
You snicker “I’m fine hawks” you let go of his hand and walk off.
Walking into your room you slammed the door frustrated. How dare he talk to you like that. If Shiggy knew he would lose his mind. You stood leaning against the door retracing the fight. Your hand going to your throat, the tingle you felt send a rush over you. It sent a heat to your core and you felt yourself get wet. He seemed like the type that all he did was one night stands and would never be with someone. You groaned sliding down the door. “No, I can’t let him get to me.”
You get up and go to your night stand and opening the drawer. You pulled one of your toys out and laid across the bed. You had to find relief somehow even though you never had sex noone had made you feel the way this man does. Your mind wandered to Dabi’s grip around your throat the warmth radiating off his body his intense stare when you looked at him. Slipping off your panties andthrowing them to the floor beside your bed, you laid across and got situated. Your head leaned back and moaned as Dabi’s name left your lips as you slid the toy in and out bringing you closer and closer to the edge.
There was a knock at your door you sat up wondering who it could be.
“Keep it down” you heard the familiar voice your body froze and threw your toy to the upper part of your bed.
You walked to the door cracking it open.
“Yeah sure” you replied, the door flung open as a grip around your throat pushed you back. You gasped seeing Dabi was standing in front of you. Your hands were wrapped around his wrist feeling the difference between his scarred burnt skin, cold staples, and normal skin on his hands.
“What’s wrong kitten did our little fight get you riled up” he smiled closing the door behind him with his foot locking it with his other free hand.
You growled at him “first stop calling me kitten. Only one person has ever been able to call me that. Second no it didn’t.”
He snickered “come now I was walking past your door and heard you moan my name. You’re always looking over at me.” He pulled you closer to him causing your hands to hit his chest. You gasped realizing under his white v neck shirt he was shredded you could feel every muscle. “Truth is you’re interesting to me as well. Something about you even though I try to push it back, makes me want you. Every inch of you.” He whispered in your ear.
Your heart skipped a beat and in reaction he smiled slightly the first time you’ve seen being here. He let go of your neck grabbing your chin spinning you around and pushing you against the door one arm had him propped up the other on your chin to make you look at him with a knee between your legs. He was so close you nearly taste him. He pulled you to him and kissed you. Your body melted under him heating up your squirmed. He chuckled against your lips and kissed you again harder. A slight sting from his bottom lip but an electrifying feeling came over you.  He let you go and walked out. He looked over his shoulder. “Have fun with that.”
You growled and slammed your door.
It was finally time for the Vanguard Action squads mission to capture Bakugo at their little summer camp program. Everyone was gathered in the bar prepping all their equipment. You sat your bag on one of the tables, zipping it open to check that you had all the supplies you needed including sutures and staples for Dabi. You werent sure of his past but from his looks you could tell it had a lot to do with his quirk. His fire was hotter then yours clearly. Once everyone was ready Kurigiri warped everyone there.
Once arrived everyone went on their own to do their own thing. You stayed back with Kurigiri so everyone knew where to go if they got injured and because Dabi demanded and he wasn’t letting you win. You sat on the ground and sighed softly. In your mind you were hoping everyone would be okay, they were all becoming close friends of yours. Your mind wandered to Dabi as you seen his blue flames light up the forest and posionus gas spread everywhere. Once the mission was a success everyone left thru Kurigiris warp gate.
Once arriving you got to healing everyones minor injuries as they chained up Bakugo. While Shigaraki talked to Bakugo trying to get him to join you walked out to your room to go put up your supplies. You left your door open as it wouldn’t take long and would go back to help Shigariki and the others. You heard heavy foot steps and then your door shut. Unsheathing your katana you turned around to see what was going on.
“Hold up there kitten, its just me.” Dabi was standing with his hands in his pockets leaned against the door staring at you.
“what do you want?”
“whats wrong?”
“whats wrong really Dabi? You wouldn’t even let me fight you made me stay back.”
“whats wrong with that? First your medical quirk is very handy. We cant risk lossing such a valueable asset.” He started walking towards you, “second a guy cant want to protect such a stunning woman like you.”
As Dabi walked towards you, your sword lowered slowly as your heart skipped. Why was he saying that? What made him say that? He was slowly walking you back against your desk. Once you hit your desk your braced yourself up on it with your hands. He leaned down placing his hands over yours and smiled staring in your eyes. Your heart felt like it was gonna explode. He was so close to you.
“youre too beauitful to be a fighter let alone be here with criminals.”
“you don’t know what ive been thru to have come here so you can stop.”
He tilted his head slightly, “whats wrong don’t like complements?”
You huffed and tried to move your hands from under his when he laced his in yours to prevent you from moving. You looked down at your hands and back up at him shocked. Your heart couldn’t keep up with what was going on. You were getting warm.
“Dabi”
He stopped you with a kiss.
“shut up you little brat.” He smiled. He wasn’t going to admit your bratty attidude was a huge turn on for him. He wanted to secretly punish you for every smart ass comment made to him. He wanted you under his grasp and weight feeling every inch of you. One hand came up to the small of your back pulling you tightly to him while the other cupped your face as he kissed you again hard. His grip getting tighter around your waist,a growl came from Dabis lips
“I want you.”
“Dabi I...” you paused as he kissed a trail along your jaw and down your neck slipping his under your shirt. Feeling his finger tips warm up slightly made you gasp.
“come on, let lose. Relax. I got you.”
“no Dabi its not that...Ive never...”
He pulled away slightly “dont tell me you’re a virgin”
You blushed slightly, “yeah there was one person who I wanted to give it to but I wasn’t able to.” a tear ran down your face.
He looked at you stunned, he couldn’t believe you were still pure. He thought you wouldve moved on. Cupping your cheek and kissing you again he picked you up walking to the bed and laid you down on your bed.
“dont worry kitten I got you I promise.”
His hands trailed up your inner thighs as he laid constant kisses all down your cheeks, jaw, and neck. He slid his jacket off laying over the foot board of your bed. His hands rested on your hips. Your hands trailed down his shirt looking over every flex muscle in his arms. He let out a soft groan under your touch. He slipped your shirt off and hooking his thumbs under your waistband of your panties and skirt pulling them off and throwing everything on top of his jacket. He pinned your hands above your head and growled smashing his lips into yours. His knee sliding you up on the bed between your legs and causing friction that sent a wave thru your body. You could feel the heat pooling in your stomach. You slid his shirt off and traced his scars and muscles. You tried to grind against his knee for more friction which caused him to grip you hips rough and push you still.
“no ma’am.”
Your body was warm, tingling from the over stimulation you were getting for the first. Dabi left a trail of soft kisses over your entire body, starting from your collar bone down to your breats, cupping them and sucking one nipple while the other was being rolled between his fingers.
“fuck” you moan and laying your head back.
“youre so beauitful kitten. Its hard to think you still have some innocence left in you.” he contiued kissing down your body before stopping between your legs. Your body was cold now where he had removed his hands. Looking down at him his blue eyes meeting your as he ran a finger over you.
“damn baby, youre so wet.”
You whimpered feeling like you were gonna break soon. He slipped one finger into your core causing you to throw your head back and moan. Giving you time he slipped a second finger in and curled up hitting your sweet spot which caused you to buck into his hand. You felt something new looking down the best you could and relized he was licking up your core havign removed his fingers. You saw a silver ball come up over your clit as he licked. How did you now noticed he had a tonuge pericing.
“holy fuck dabi”
He snickered seeing your on your face. A sensation started over coming you. He slid his fingers back in whivh sent you the edge,
“Dabi Im gonna...”
“cum for me kitten. Let go and enjoy.”
With that you screamed his name as your released peaked. You never noticed Dabi had taken his jeans off and was rubbing his hand over his cock. He stood up pulling you to the edge of the bed. You looked up at him but seeing his cock hard with precum on the tip. You gasp at the sight between his size and the fact he had pericings going down the underside of his cock. You tried to squirm away wondering how he would even fit in you. His hands gripped your hips leaving marks on them. He kissed softly down your neck as he ran his tip thru your wet core. You whimpered against his lips. He slowly pushed in letting you adjust to his size inch by inch. You were clawing at his sides panting. He leaned down and kissed once you were adjusted
“fuck baby youre so tight.”
He pulled your legs up around his waist letting his sink all the in filling you up completely. You moaned from the mix of pain and pleasure ontop of the pericings rubbing against your wall. He started thrusting slowly working up to harder and faster. Before you both knew you were close. He was not going to cum till you did first. He reached down and circled your clit bringing you over the edge. You felt yourself clamp down around his cock. His groaned at the feeling. After a few more thrusts you felt his warm seed filling you up. He pulled out slowly and laid beside you pulling you to him. Resting you head on his chest you catching your beathe.
“what you think?” he smiled playing with your hair.
“amazing. Better then I ever thought of.”
“good, because you deserve nothing but the best.”
He sat up and walked into your bathroom coming out with a wet rag a few minutes later cleaning himself off and then he sat between your legs and cleaned you up kissing your inner thighs. Reaching behind him he grabbed both of yours clothes and helped you get dress first before he got dressed.
A year has passed since you joined the LOV. Everyone by now knew you and dabi were a thing, sneaking off for quickies during missions, the screams and moans that came from both your rooms. You were walking down the hallway when you noticed the door to the bar was cracked and you heard three people talking to eachother, you stopped and noticed it Hawks, Dabi, and Shigaraki.
“You can’t keep hiding it Dabi” Hawks explained
“You shouldn’t have brought her here bird brains” Dabi growled “I asked you to keep an eye on her when I couldn’t be around”
“And I have been when you go on missions or patrol” Hawks sighed “eventually she’s gonna find out who you truly are.” Shigaraki stated
“Not if I can help it. It would cause too much pain for her again. She seems to be doing decent with everything even the weakest part of her, her mental health. I cant believe I let myself get close to her like this. I never expected it to get this intense between us. When I seen her I wanted nothing to do with her to keep her from getting hurt again.”
“Yeah no thanks to your fake death and hiding in the shadows. Toya she loves you she always has.”
“You don’t think I don’t know that!” Dabi yelled slamming a whiskey glass against the bar. “She’s still wearing the necklace I gave her! Weve been sleeping together! I wanted you to keep her away from here. I don’t want her to get hurt again.”
“Toya she can handle herself you see that. Let her know for her sake. She thinks you’re dead. Don’t you think she’d be happy to know you’re alive.”
Dabi scuffed “I hid in the shadows so she didn’t see me and think I was hideous or a monster. I love her dearly. She has never left my mind. She would be better off thinking I was dead. She could find someone who can actually make her happy, feel loved, cared about, and safe. Someone she can marry and have kids with.”
“Toya!” Hawks screamed “that’s what she wants with you and no one else”
“And you!” Dabi snarled smoke seeping from his scars turning towards Shigaraki “how can you let your best friend fight alongside us”
The door slammed behind you after sneaking in while they were yelling. Your eyes darting between Hawks, Dabi and Shigaraki.
“Toya?” You sniffled head down. You look up “is it really you Toya”
He freezes seeing tears streaming down your face.
“Fuc-“
“How could y’all not tell me he was alive!” You scream cutting hawks off balling your fists up flames coming out.
Dabi stood up walking towards you. Hawks slid behind you to stand in front of the door.
Dabi reaches for you and you snatch back
“Kitten?” He whined slightly desperately trying to touch you.
“Don’t fucking call me that! How could you hide from me” you growled “all these years I’ve been alone and you weren’t there cause I thought you were dead but you werent! This last year was all a lie! After everything!”
He steps towards you again “please let me explain baby”
“IM DONE!” You scream and throw your room key to shiggy, breaking off the chain you wore and throwing it at Dabi, shoving hawks out of the way running out the door.
“Y/n!” Dabi bolted out the door and then grabbed by hawks.
“Don’t, let her think about all this.”
You walked home crying replaying everything in your head. How could Dabi be Toya. No wonder he was so familiar to you. He hid from you but why exactly. He knows you love him ever have since you were kids. How could he do this.
Your keys jingled as you opened your door to your house. You immediately grabbed a bottle of crown you had and rolled a blunt. You wanted to forget all about tonight. You walked into the bathroom and grabbed a pocket off the counter.
Dabi was outside your house watching you when Hawks walked up.
“Man leave her alone. Do you realize how much she’s hurt, hurting right now. You faked your death and disappeared and never told her.”
“Don’t you think I don’t know that.” Toya growled “but I can’t let her do anything irrational. I can’t lose her”
He paused, hearing your door shut. He turned back quickly and scuffed. “Hawks…” he lowered his head.
Hawks looked over his shoulder and seen the bloody bandages that wrapped both your arms that weren’t there earlier. He sets his hand on Toya’s shoulder.
“Toya” he said
He shrugged hawks hand off and walked towards you. His flames covering his arms pissed at himself.
“Y/N!”
You turned around from dancing and waved at Dabi giggling. Clearly cross faded. It had seemed to work to get your mind off everything that happened.
He stormed up to you knocking the bottle of crown out of your hand cause it to crash to the ground.
“What the fuck!” You growled.
Dabi grabbed your wrists ”what the fuck? What the fuck is this?!” He yelled at you causing you to flinch and wince from the searing heat and pain from him grabbing you.
“I stayed away so I wouldn’t scare you. So, you wouldn't think I was a monster. I made a deal with Hawks so he could watch over you while I was away. For three of these 11 years I was in a coma from losing control over my flames. How could I ever face you like this. Then I joined the LOV and made him keep you away so you didn’t get hurt by me or anyone else.” Dabi pulled you in wrapping his arms around you. “I wanted you to forget me and find someone you could live a normal life with.”
“How could you think I could forget you. Toya you are, my heart was always yours I never wanted anyone else. I didn’t do anything with anyone because that was for you I determined that when we were younger” you cried in his chest. You pulled away looking up at him and gasp
“Toya?”
Due to his burns, he couldn’t cry so his crying was just blood coming from his scars. He gripped you again collapsing to the ground crying choking back his tears.
“Please give me another chance. Let me make all this up to you. I can’t lose you. Especially not now. I cant live without you.” He whimpered.
By this time Hawks had left. The warmth from being in Toya’s arms relaxed you more than you realized. He picked you up and took you inside, setting you on the couch. He grabbed your arms and unwrapped them. He stared at them and sighed. He got up and went to the bathroom to grab your medical supplies. He come and sat back down. He reached for your arms pulling them up. You turned your head upset with yourself. He grabs your chin and pulled you towards him landing a kiss on your lips. You freeze from the warmth. He pulls back
“Let’s get these cleaned up and taken care of”
He grabbed alcohol to clean and betadine. After cleaning everything up he grabbed your suture kit turning to you but you stopped him setting your hands on the kit and shook your head. Toya looked at you confused
“Let me stitch you up those are deep kitten”
The pet name made he gave you all these years ago, you shivered and whimper.
“That’s why yours are always busting open Toya”
You grab his hand and looked away he tilted his head
“Cauterize them or they won’t stop bleeding that’s the only way with the way I did it”
He looks at you stunned
“I can’t do that. I can’t hurt you like that.”
“Toya, please” you make eye contact with him. “I want this” you start crying again. “I want you. I need you back in my life. I’ve been miserable please I’m begging you. I can’t do this being alone. Please let me be by your side! Don’t keep hiding from me.”
You can hear his breath release with a sigh of almost relief. He reaches down using a small flame the size of a pen to seal your cuts on your arms. It sent shivers down your spine and bit your lip. It was painful but at the same time the sensation sent you into a frenzy. You couldn’t fight it anymore. You needed him. You looked up at him when he rested his hand on your cheek and wiped your tears away leaning in for a kiss.
The kiss was full of passion unlike before. There was a spark there. A heat went thru your body and whimpered against his lips. He started kissing along your jaw line. A breath left your mouth and closing your eyes in reaction to his touch. Toya grabbed your hands intertwining his fingers in yours and pulled you to your room. Shutting and locking the door behind him. He starts stalking towards you intimidating but the look in his eyes was full of a fiery lust. A need for you.
“Toya”
“I can’t take it anymore from the time you walked into the hideout I needed you. I want everyone to know who you belong to.” He reaches in his pocket and pulled out your chain. He had fixed it.
“Kitten please be mine again. Please forgive me. I’ll spend the rest of my life making this up to you.” He stares at you “you’ve always been so..submissive to me even as kids. Let me be your Dom and be my sub. Let’s work on this and start over.”
He was trembling which was unlike him. You grab his hands and smile.
“As long as you don’t vanish again, please, yes”
He put the chain back around your neck and locked the locket sliding the key in his jackets pocket and zipped it shut. He wrapped you in his arms and yawned. You both didn’t realize how late it was. He pulled you down on the couch and held you tightly as if he would lose you any moment. Soon you both drifted off to sleep. Peaceful, calm, relaxed and for once never of you were alone anymore.

Just Saw MHA You're Next today. Here are my thoughts ^w^. Minor spoilers included
It was fun! Lol honestly? It felt like fanfiction. But like... a good fanfiction you find on ao3 and think to yourself 'oh wow, this would be so cool animated'.
I mean, All Might evil doppleganger called Dark Might? Dark Might being the leader of a powerful Italian mafia family? Dark Might having a scene of him being all intimidating while he swirls wine in a glass? An angsty Italian assassin who cares so deeply about his target and has a tragic backstory as well as missing limbs? That really is straight out of an ao3 fic lol. But not in a bad way.
Giulio? Hot. Sexy. I wanna kiss this man on the mouth and then drag him to therapy.
Debra? Hot. Sexy. My friend and I were fighting over her after the movie and ultimately decided that we'd both love for her to step on our faces.
The only thing that makes this movie a tragedy? No Aizawa... not a line, not even a silent expression or reaction. He's just not in the movie. Which is really weird because he's in the intro musical sequence. And usuallyyyyy when there are characters in the intro sequence, that tends to imply that said character WILL BE IN THE MOVIE. WHERE WAS HE? MY HUSBAND? MY LOVE? MY POOR INSOMNIAC WHERE WERE YOU T-T?????
Overall, I'd say the best way to enjoy this movie is to go into it not expecting any sort of depth or character development from the mha cast (it feels like most of the development went to the new characters, which makes sense. The movie's takes place in the middle of the main show's events so they can't really change the trajectory of the characters) but the one moment that really tugged on my heart was when Todoroki got stuck in a dream of his deepest desire and it was just him as a kid playing with all of his siblings, Toya included and his parents just sitting off to the side smiling. That HURT T-T :D.
Glad I saw the movie!

Bakudeku mpreg angst I'm so sorry
(Keep in midn that I hav no knowledge of mha at all🥺)
It was a dark and stormy night in the ua dormrooms, and Deku was stressing more than usual. He holds a pregnancy test in hand, pacing anxiously back and forth across the bathroom.
Deku only had a single one night fling with Todoroki, and now he could be pregnant? Even worse, Bakugo could find out!! Just when Deku thought that it couldn't get any worse, he saw it..
The positive pregnancy test.
Deku gasps and covers his mouth, tears prickling at the corners of his eyes. He can't have Todoroki's baby.. Everyone would find out about the afair!
Deku is quick to throw out the pregnancy test when Bakugo knocks on the door.
"DEKU ARE YOU IN THE BATHROOM I NEED TO SHIT"
Deku jumps at the voice, quickly running out of the bathroom with a small "yes..!". Bakugo, having to take a massive shit (relatable), ignores Deku and just goes into the washroom.
Deku makes his way to the living room, sitting down on the couch with his head in his hands. How is he gonna tell Todoroki? How is he gonna tell Bakugo??
Deku's train of thought is interrupted when he suddenly hears a scream from the bathroom. Deku runs over to the bathroom to see the door open, Bakugo standing with the pregnancy test in hand.
"What the FUCK is this?!"
Deku panics, trying to defuse the situation.
"It's nothing Kacchan!! I swear!"
Bakugo slaps Deku across the face.
"YOU CHEATED ON ME?! WITH WHO?"
Deku cries, shaking his head and holding the red mark on his cheek.
"W-w-w-w-w-with T-T-T-T-T-T-Todoroki..."
Bakugo feels his blood boil at Deku's words. Todoroki?! That fucking asshole!!
"WITH THAT TOYA COPY?? I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DEKU."
the end lololol
OKAY SO. THIS IS FULLY A JOKE. THIS WAS A JOKE FOR ONE OF MY ONLINE FRIENDS AND I THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY. NO I DO NOT ACTUALLY LIKE BAKUDEKU, MPREG, OR ANY SORT OF COMBINATION BETWEEN THE TWO.

𝕯𝖆𝖇𝖎 ; Fandom stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How do I tell the fandom that Dabi was a useless, weepy, ill adjusted little runt ( AFFECTIONATE ) who wasn't allowed anywhere near Shoto and not a tall, responsible but troubled older brother figure who mother hen'd his younger siblings, especially Shoto, and that Dabi wasn't close to Shoto or particularly close to Fuyumi either but him and Natsu had a toxic codependent sibling thing going on hard core and I'm so sick of the Natsuo erasure and/or Shoto being put in Natsuo's place when that makes no fucking sense w/o pissing off the Horny Dabi simps who cant let go of bad/outdated flavorless wooby fanon characterization. How do I tell the fandom that their portrayal of the Todoroki family dynamic is severely wrong but can be drastically improved by understanding that while Endeavor ( and to a much lesser extent Rei ) were not actually narcissists, the parenting style at the forefront of the family is almost identical to narcissistic parental abuse and looking into this, along with things such as "Narcissistic devaluation" and the "Scapegoat" and the "Golden Child" explains so much that this fandom can't wrap its head around in regard to the extreme emotional / psychological abuse suffered by the Todoroki children without pissing off the Enji simps neck deep in abuse apology cause their fav has fat dilf tits.
Anyway on that subject children who grew up in households that were heavy on the narcissistic parental abuse often fall into "types" with particular traits and heres the Todorokis to a T ( Not including Shoto because his role is very obviously golden child (Masterpiece) and wasn't ever one of the Scapegoats ("failed creations") I mean I could def put him under "Problem Solver" but since he was never actually a scapegoat child its more complex than that for him so heres just my fav little failures ):
Fuyumi - the caretaker
Scapegoated children may provide emotional and/or physical caretaking to one or more parent/stepparent, functioning as a stand-in best friend, spouse, therapist, or nurse. They may be given household responsibilities such as cleaning, cooking, and caring for siblings, while also being targeted with anger and blame for the family's woes. Often intuitive and empathetic, caretaker scapegoats can become powerful healers as adults. But if they continue to prioritize the needs of others over their own they are likely to experience anxiety, poor self-care, resentment, and burnout.
Natsuo - the protector
Children in the protector role step in to defend a parent and/or younger sibling(s) from the dominant narcissist's verbal and/or physical abuse. Such children may be driven to try to protect family members because of their own experience with being scapegoated, or they may become scapegoated in the family system as a result of standing up to the abuse. As adults, children who have confronted the aggression of abusers may become fierce and compassionate advocates for justice and the underprivileged. But they often struggle to recognize their own limits, vulnerability, and need for support.
Toya - the collapsed
Some scapegoated children experience such harsh neglect and abuse, with few sources of support to build resiliency, that they fail to thrive and become mentally unstable, chronically ill, suicidal, institutionalized, homeless, consumed by addiction, and/or incarcerated. As adults, they may experience a trajectory of low functioning, repeated crises, or collapse that ends tragically in early death by illness, addiction, suicide, or violence. Kids who are "different" in some way, such as queer or neuro-atypical, are often targets of extreme scapegoating, both within their family and society at large.

Note
Nah what bums me out about potential ways Hori wants to take the father and sons is how he's emphasizing Shoto is untalented and just an ideal quirk compared to Dabi so it's about Shoto not Dabi. Endeavor bemoaning Toya almost being perfect was the start of arc we got of how Toya was a "real" son, not just a quirk unlike Shoto. Endeavor was an arc villain as bad dad so his story more like Twice, Toga that he's always got abnormality others *have to accept instead of enforcing to normal standards
Oh yeah, I forgot he's been going for the Shouto is "untalented" route and has been doing so for a while now, which has become all that more apparent with how Dabi is somehow able to pick up the move that he had spent ages working on after seeing it once... I don't know what I hate more T-T
Genuinely, every new thing I hear about the Todoroki plot, the more I cry inside.

Hi! (First Post I guess) MASTER LIST LINKED BELOW KEEP READING!
Hello! I'm Sakura_Garnet and I am chronically obsessed with My Hero Academia, specifically the Keeping Up With The Todoroki's subplot. I exclusively write Dabi/Toya Todoroki-centered fanfiction, ranging from angst to fluff to smut and various combinations. I have a few finished fanfictions and a LOT of WIPs, as well as a plethora of "oneshots" for various AU's. The majority of my writing is done on AO3, but I double post a few of my big works on wattpad. I am constantly listening to music, and most of my fics have been inspired by songs and albums. I have so so SO many headcanons for MHA/BNHA, and feel very strongly about DabiHawks/TouKei as you will see from the majority of my writings. I have ADHD and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and try my best to relay my experiences with these neurodivergencies in a few of my works. My main fic that is my pride and joy is PHOENIX: A Pro Hero Toya Todoroki AU, which covers 14 years of Toya Todoroki's life in an alternate universe (ages 16 to 30 to be exact) . If you do choose to read it, please mind the tags and the AO3 author's notes as it does deal with some heavy content (I tend to max out the tags on the majority of my works bc a bitch is nothing if not thorough). I don't know how much I'll be active on here, but I'm excited!
As always
The Past Never Dies,
<3
Sakura_Garnet
Master List (and my universes) 1 8 + ONLY
(Disclaimer: I curse like a sailor in real life so pretty much all fics have some form of swearing in them in some form or fashion. I tag my fics extensively, please pay attention to the tags listed in each fic as I will not be listing them here. Summaries and taglists will be on the links for each fic <3 fics with a sole focus on sm*t will be labeled smvtfics, but that doesn't necessarily mean that unlabeled ones do not have sm*t in them. Some links will take you to tumblr, but not everything is posted on here, so some will go straight to the AO3 fic.)
