Primary Headcanon Post !!
Not spoiler free, if you get spoiled somehow it’s not my fault. Especially because my take on Fumiaki will be more Shin’uchi version of YW2 (or Psychic Specters in English)
I will be putting my own creative liberties with my own headcanons so this will not be necessarily a character study completely. I am doing a character study + my own headcanons and applying it to my muse, please note that not everything said in this will be “canon”.
Since Fumiaki is ultimately not present in Keita’s timeline of YW2, this is solely based on the fact that Fumika is the holder of the Yokai Watch, and based on her timeline.
I’ll be using the Japanese names just for my personal preference. I’m sorry to anyone reading this who is only familiar with the English names, but I primarily use the Japanese names to begin with !!
This isn’t an essay, it may be messy at times, and I apologize if my train of thought can be confusing to follow, if you have any questions if you want me to clarify anything, feel free to ask !!
BACKGROUND.
For a little background, although the mention of Fumiaki’s parent’s are very scarce, I want to assume that one or both of his parents are dead. Since there is already a gravestone in the past, (and the second one in the present being Fumiaki’s grave) I would assume that the grave could possibly be for both parents, with just their names engraved on it while their bodies were cremated, leaving Fumiaki to be the one to inherit their own since his family owned it (and I don’t want to get super deep into any legal things considering that this is a kid’s game and I feel like I’m not supposed to care about it much).
This is also possibly supported by the Altar present in the 60 year past, though you can’t interact with it, I believe it’s an altar to his parents.
But for some headcanons on his parents while they were alive, I feel that Fumiaki’s mother died in childbirth, given the time-- childbirth deaths weren’t super common in Japan compared to other countries during the time period, but it was more common than today’s standards, and with the condition of Kemamoto Village, a place that doesn’t even seem to house a hospital, probably the most they have is a local doctor, she died giving birth due to the strain on her body and the lack of medical technology given in the time period.
Because of this, Fumiaki primarily grew up in his father’s care, despite being a single parent in such times I feel that it wasn’t particularly bad for either of them. He probably learned a lot of skills, especially survival skills to help ease the workload for both of them, which initially sparked Fumiaki’s interest in making things, often being fascinated with technology and how things work, ultimately leading to his interest in watches since I think he would have to have a fair amount of understanding regular watches to even try making the Yokai Watch.
Although things seemed to be going well, around just before Fumiaki found Fuyunyan, his father succumbed to an illness, and with lack of proper treatment-- and the inability to escort him to a proper hospital in time, he died before anyone could do anything about the sickness. This took a big toll on Fumiaki, ultimately making himself more reclusive, with the inability to do anything about the things that happen around him.
What happens with his unnamed friend, happens after this, when he finds condolence with the other-- it was a way to fill some sort of hole with the idea to cope with the fact of his lost family and being a kid who inherited his entire house and any land that came with it-- he found it nice to be able to find the comfort of company.
Though his inability to control a situation struck once again, being unable to help his friend being bullied by two older kids, and ultimately losing someone that he had grown attached to-- he vowed to himself that he didn’t want to be friends with anyone until he was able to grow stronger, so that he could do something about such terrible things, to be able to stand up for himself.
MINDSET.
I wanted to lay out my interpertation and headcanons on his background before I got into his mindset because I think that it can explain a lot of reasons why Fumiaki has a lot of trouble (at first) with the idea of friends and being close to people and why he adores Kamen Guts. Even though in general he probably could have fallen in love with any generic superhero-- the idea of being the world’s friend, and being able to have the power to help people like that is something that he idolizes greatly. Especially being a kid with little to no control over his life (at least in his early years) and with misfortune plaguing him, the ideal of a super hero who can do such things enamors him and his child like fantasies to become someone like that.
On top of finding the comic soon after his inability to help his friend, ultimately ending their friendship, it really drove him to be self sufficient, not wanting to rely on anyone, not even the Yokai he came to help, and even Fuyunyan. He deliberately tends to be hostile towards anyone who wants to be his friend out of fear of hurting them in the same way that he did others, and the thought of unable to be in control of a situation to the point where he can only sit and watch as chaos unravels before him is a thought unbearable to him. He chooses to go down a path of unrealistic realism, in the sense that he denies any form of intimacy for the most part with the thought that if anything bad happens, that he is only to blame, trying his best not to rely on others as a stubborn way to prove his strength and capabilities.
This can make him act rashly, seemingly almost uncaring for the well being of himself to get the results that he wants to see in himself-- his fear being his ultimate self motivation drive to become stronger, without relying on anyone.
Throughout the events of YW2, even though he does learn that he can rely on his friends, and that he doesn’t need to be strong all the time-- and all by himself, Fumi being an impact on his life was also one of the more life changing ones, slowly learning and realizing the importance of friendship, especially when facing a huge foe like the Kaima, and the importance of teamwork. Ultimately shaping him into a better person, realizing that other’s can care just as much for him as he does them.
