♛ Headcanon: On Bede and Hatterene
Tumblr media
LET THERE BE NO QUESTION, NO OTHER POKEMON HOLDS A CLOSER SPOT TO BEDE’S HEART than the Hatenna line; even the sight of one of the three evolutionary stages is enough to coax a rare genuine smile to his features. And it should come as little surprise that challengers will see many of them hovering about Ballonlea’s Gym...or perhaps around the new gym leader himself. Though where Bede is, his own Hatterene is never too far, radiating a beautifully intimidating aura.
And Bede would have it no other way.
(After all, it’s the same air he wants to radiate himself.)
To him, Hatterene is not only his partner through all, but his dearest and first friend. The closest semblance of a family.
Hatterene does indeed have a nickname--Circe. The name came to Bede after one of his many literary escapades and observation of her behavior. Fitting enough given her tendency throughout her evolutionary stages to silence those who pose a threat to herself or her trainer. Testing her is not a wise option.
Bede and Circe met during his years in the orphanage of Motostoke. Nights that may have been better spent sleeping were instead moments of peace for Bede, an opportunity for exploration beyond the walls that were some distortion of a home. And it is one fateful night that he met the lone Hatenna who would become his partner for life. While Bede never had a ball to formally capture her until he met Rose, Circe very much behaved as though Bede were her trainer.
As a Hatenna and Hattrem, Circe was often carried in Bede’s arms as they traveled....that or she lived within his jacket. Truthfully, she doesn’t like to stay in her ball, and her trainer doesn’t make it a point to keep her there.
Unsurprisingly, Bede’s emotional composure comes a lot in part from having raised the Hatenna line. He’s indeed felt the wrath of an displeased Hattrem more than one occasion.
He affectionately calls Circe “Dear Hatterene” or “Dear Circe” often--while he may not appear to be at first glance, Bede is rather affectionate with his teammates. Many of them are spoiled rotten.
After gaining his psychic and fae magic capabilities, the two of them often have telepathic conversations together--topics range from being important, to emotions, to snarking about others unapologetically.
Despite her aura, Circe is actually quite friendly (unless she feels ill intentions)--and motherly, for that matter. At times, Bede feels as if he’s the one being raised.
Both trainer and Pokemon cannot stand loud people or places.
