⟨ The Inheritance Games ⟩ | “I wouldn't marry me, either.”
CHAPTER 1 — The girl from New Castle, Connecticut
The Inheritance Games belongs to Jennifer Lynn Barnes
SYNOPSIS — What if things had been different, when Avery inherited the old man's fortune? What if Alisa did some puzzle solving of her own, and what if Nash started to feel something for Alisa he thought he'd never feel in a long time?
MAIN TAGS — Canon divergence, Exes to Lovers, slowburn, angst with happy ending, suggestive-ish, oc inserts, WHAT-IF, mention of character death
| [ The Following is a fanfiction that drifts away from the original source material. If you aren't interested in anything relating to Alisa Ortega, Nash Hawthorne, or anything about The Inheritance Games in general, this fic probably isn't for you. ] |
“Who is Avery Kylie Grambs?”
Was a question Alisa had asked before her father had elaborated further on the matter of ‘Avery Kylie Grambs’.
Mr. Ortega was understanding of his daughter's puzzled feelings on the matter, and was well aware that Alisa hadn't been in the best of moods recently.
Ever since the death of Tobias Hawthorne, the media hounded the Hawthorne family and everyone remotely Hawthorne-adjacent for even the tiniest sliver of information they could capitalize; what didn't help was the continuous persistence of Skye, Zara, and Zara's husband Constantine on getting the Will reading over with.
Skye, worst of all, revelling in the attention-hogging media outlets and just barely given enough assurances of the Will reading to not, metaphorically, drop a bomb on the press.
Naturally, Mr. Ortega only discussed the facts with his daughter in regards to the situation of the mystery girl listed in the required presence.
“Avery Kylie Grambs is a seventeen year old girl currently residing in New Castle, Connecticut,” her father had begun with his overview, “her mother had died two years prior, and her biological father is notably absent from her life.”
As her father continued to give a rundown of information on Avery, Alisa had quietly listed each of them down in her head, one by one.
Avery — or as Alisa had referred to her, “Ms. Grambs” — had lost her mother when she was fifteen, and for a majority of her life, her father had been notably absent and hadn't bothered to reach out to her. After the death of her mother, Avery was taken under the care of her half sister— Libby Grambs.
The girl was just barely scraping by, working at a hole-in-the-wall diner. Alisa's eyebrows knitted together as she processed the rest of the information her father provided for her about Ms. Grambs.
Everything else had gone deaf to Alisa, too focused on listening to her father's provided Intel than on anything else; all until Mr. Ortega had finished his overview of Avery's life with, “For the better part of three weeks, the firm had been sending letters to Ms. Grambs inviting her to the reading of Mr. Hawthorne's Will.”
“As of yesterday, Grayson Hawthorne had taken it upon himself to pay a visit to Ms. Grambs’ high school— and she is currently on a flight to Texas with her sister, and is expected to arrive tomorrow.”
Alisa nodded. “And what exactly must I do in regards to Ms. Grambs’ attendance of the Will reading?”
Alisa had expected anything but the response her father had provided her. “You will be representing the firm as her liaison during her visit.”
She blinked a multitude of times, eighteen times, total. “What?”
⊱────────────────────⊰
And that was how she'd gotten her in this situation— exiting a black sedan in an all dare-the-devil-to-ruin-it white power suit, and waiting for Avery and Libby Grambs to move past security.
The second they did, Alisa drew near. “Ms. Grambs,” from one girl to the next, she nodded to Avery, then to her sister, adding on an identical greeting. “Ms. Grambs.”
She turned, very well expecting the two girls to follow and keeping up a professional stance once they did. “I'm Alisa Ortega,” Alisa said, “from McNamara, Ortega, and Jones.”
A pause, then a continuation. “You are a very hard young woman to get ahold of,” Alisa cast a sideways glance at Avery.
To which Avery simply shrugged. “I live in my car.”
“She doesn't live there,” Libby Grambs interjected quickly. “Tell her you don't.”
A hum left Alisa's lips before she continued her very obviously perfunctory speech of greeting for the two Grambs daughters.
“We're so glad you could make it.”
Alisa added, “During your time in Texas, you're to consider yourselves guests of the Hawthorne family. I'll be your liaison to the firm. Anything you need while you're here, come to me.”
Casting another glance at Avery, Alisa could guess what the girl was thinking from a mile away; Usually, lawyers bill by the hour, but the Hawthorne family was a family with more means than the average family.
She has a very expressive face, Alisa thought, barely managing to stop a bare hint of a smirk on her face.
“Is there anything I can do for you?” Alisa asked, striding toward an automatic door without so much as slowing her pace when it seemed like the door might not open in time.
Avery waited before she could reply. “How about some information?”
What a way to narrow it down. “You'll have to be more specific.”
“Do you know what's in the will?”
“I do not.”
Turning a corner, Alisa gestured to a black sedan idling near the curb, opening the back door for Avery and her sister before she occupied the passenger seat.
She sent the driver — one of Oren's men — a glance. And in reply, they grunted out an acknowledgement to go along with a nod.
Only then did Alisa continue speaking. “You’ll find out what's in the will soon enough,” Alisa said, her words crisp and neat as much as her dare-the-devil-to-ruin-it white suit.
“We all will. The reading is scheduled for shortly after your arrival at Hawthorne House.”
Based on the dazed expressions from both Avery and her sister, Alisa could at least understand their befuddlement. Hawthorne House, not the Hawthornes’ house. Like some kind of English manor, complete with its own name.
“Is that where we'll be staying?” Libby Grambs asked, her head tilted. “Hawthorne House?”
“You'll have your pick of bedrooms,” Alisa assured, leaning the side of her face against her fist. “Mr. Hawthorne bought the land the House is built on more than fifty years ago and spent every one of those years adding into the architectural marvel he built there.”
Alisa looked out of the window, the black sedan passing by a multitude of sky-high office buildings, hotels. With the movements of those outside slowed down.
“I've lost track of the number of bedrooms, but it's upward of thirty. Hawthorne House is… quite something.”
To which Avery pressed her luck by saying, “I'm guessing Mr. Hawthorne was quite something, too?”
Alisa gave the ‘mystery girl’ a glance. “Good guess,” she said, “Mr. Hawthorne was fond of good guessers.”
Assessing the look on Avery's face, Alisa pitied the girl. A girl who knew nothing on why she was listed in the Will, none the wiser to anything the old man had planned for this day.
It was Avery's sister's turn to ask questions, now. “How well did you know him?”
“My father has been Tobias Hawthorne's attorney since before I was born.” Alisa's voice softened. She thought about her father, her mother, the love they shared; the time she spent in Hawthorne House, getting lost in the walls of the mansion and playing games of mystery and puzzle solving.
“I spent a lot of time at Hawthorne House, growing up.”
Tobias Hawthorne wasn't just a client to Alisa. He was more than that. It wasn't just his grandsons the old man had a hand in raising.
“Do you have any idea why I'm here?” Asked Avery. “Why he'd leave me anything at all?”
“Are you the world-saving type?”
Hardly an ordinary question, Avery must've thought. Alisa would've agreed; but she felt obligated to assess who Avery Kylie Grambs was— where she stood.
“No?” The tone of Avery's voice was of the guessing type.
Another question. A continuation, a curiosity. “Ever had your life ruined by a Hawthorne?”
Avery sounded more sure of herself when she answered. “No.”
Alisa smiled, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. She thought about that vow she'd made, that promise to both herself... and to Nash. Never lose your heart to a Hawthorne.
“Lucky you.”

this is my 3rd alisa post, but who tf cares.
here are songs that remind me of her and why! (mostly taylor swift but u should've seen that coming)
1. you're losing me (from the vault) by taylor swift.
“and i wouldn't marry me either, a pathological people pleaser, who only wanted you to see her„
tell me thats not alisa. tell me alisa doesn't feel insecure bcs of how her relationship w nash ended. tell me she isnt a people pleaser who does every for the validation of others. go on, ill give you time.
2. right where you left me by taylor swift.
“help, im still at the restaurant, still sitting in the corner i haunt, cross-legged in the dim light, they say 'what a sad sight'„
other than grayson, alisa is probably another tig character who's still stuck in the past. just like how grayson still thinks abt emily, im sure alisa still thinks abt nash. u can see it in the way she acts arnd him or when shes talking abt him. she is literally right where he left her!!!
3. champagne problems by taylor swift.
“she could've made such a lovely bride, it's a shame she's fucked in the head„
i have a major hc that alisa used to get a lot of hate before, during, and after being together with nash. ppl probl gossiped abt how the break up was her fault and everything. its probl one of the reasons why alisa is so salty abt it.
4. midnight rain by taylor swift
“he was sunshine, i was midnight rain, he wanted it comfortable, i wanted that pain„
nash wanted to leave 'everything hawthorne' behind and get comfortably married, alisa wanted her career and her job to tobias hawthorne. she knew it was be painful, she knew what it costed, but she did it for her job. she did it for herself!!!
5. your best american girl by mitski
“your mother wouldn't approve of how my mother raised me, but i do, i finally do, you're an all-american boy, i guess i couldn't help trying to be the best american girl„
smth i realized a lot of ppl forgot (or just dont know in general) is that alisa wasnt white. yk how xander kinda expressed that being the only coloured hawthorne had its difficulty cz people never considered him like his brother? i bet it was the same for alisa. i bet that she always felt like she wasnt good enough to be a hawthorne's wife bcs she was black and ppl were constantly racist.
6. the only heartbreaker by mitski
“but i think for as long as we're together, i'll be the only heartbreaker„
can we talk abt how throughout the entire series, alisa was blamed for a lot of things? to the point where she even blamed herself for getting kidnapped? the poor lady was so used to being at fault, she even took blame for a situation that could've gotten her killed? everything that she did was legal and extremely reasonable according to law, bcs idk if u remember, she was a lawyer...?? people act like she purposely did things for the sake of doing it. the girls doing her job!! let her live!!!
7. cedar by gracie abrams
“breaking up is funny, i forget you aren't mine„
does this need explanation? i think it was obvious that alisa felt jealous in some parts when she saw libby n nash together, can u blame her tho? no. no you cant.
making this post made me kind sad. i could go on and on abt alisa ortega. feel free to message me if u wanna talk abt lee-lee, cz i legit love her sm.

[ The Inheritance Games ] | “I wouldn't marry me, either.”
Prologue
The Inheritance Games series belongs to Jennifer Lynn Barnes.
SYNOPSIS — What if things had been different, when Avery inherited the old man's fortune? What if Alisa did some puzzle solving of her own, and what if Nash started to feel something for Alisa he thought he'd never feel in a long time?
MAIN TAGS — Canon divergence, Exes to lovers, slowburn, angst with happy ending, suggestive-ish, oc insert, WHAT-IF, mention of character death (Emily Laughlin mention)
| [ The Following is a fanfiction that drifts away from the canon source material. If you aren't particularly interested in anything relating to Alisa Ortega, Nash Hawthorne, or anything about The Inheritance Games in general, this fic probably isn't for you. ] |
Never lose your heart to a Hawthorne. Something Alisa repeated to herself like a mantra over the course of several years, leading to the present day.
The way Hawthornes loved was all-consuming, all-encompassing. Destructive in ways it shouldn't be for both parties involved.
Alisa could remember a time when things were simpler. When she was a little girl spending her days in Hawthorne House while her father was at work, playing with Tobias Hawthorne’s four grandsons— his eldest, in particular.
But those days were long gone, Alisa had reminded herself, now seated with her head hung low, dressed in all black; Tobias Hawthorne — over-ambitious, machiavellian philanthropist that he was — had finally been put to rest at the age of 78.
For most of the ceremony, it was eerily quiet. And while Alisa thought herself as strong as steel, she couldn't shake the feeling of unease throughout her body at the deathly silence of the funeral— even if such silence was understandable.
She, her father, and the rest of what was left of Tobias Hawthorne's family sat during the ceremony of his funeral, where he'd be buried beside his late wife, Alice O’Day Hawthorne.
He was a complicated man, Alisa thought. Too many gears in his head… so many ideas. Perhaps too many.
“Alisa,” she'd heard her father call out to her, garnering her attention in record time. With their heads hung low, the father and daughter duo met each other's gazes.
Her father — Mr. Ortega, most people called him — was a lawyer, a man she admired a great deal to the point where she'd slaved away studying to join him at his law firm: McNamara, Ortega, and Jones.
The very law firm that paid for the funeral services of their main, and only client.
“Yes?” Alisa's voice was barely a whisper. Her eyes beckoned at her father, wondering what he had to say to her.
His gaze was paternal, fatherly in ways Alisa's seen through the majority of her childhood even when he was busy with work to properly care for her.
“Are you alright?” Her father asked gently, “I know that you must be thinking of the changes that'll be made. What'll become of the law firm, the Hawthorne family…”
Alisa exhaled, holding her father's gaze a moment longer with her hand over his. “I'm fine, Papa. I'm fine.”
But her father was right; She had been thinking of the changes to come of what she considered normal up until today. Of the law firm, of who would be inheriting the Hawthorne foundation, what'll become of the Hawthorne family now that their patriarch had now passed— and that wasn't even bringing the forty-six point two billion dollars of the old man’s net worth.
It wasn't as silent as it was at the start of the funeral. Alisa took a good look at her surroundings, at the people around her.
Her father's colleagues, McNamara and Jones respectively, did what most of everyone was doing: Keeping their heads low to pay their respects to the old man.
Skye Hawthorne was the only one making any actual sound, sobbing to an almost comically loud extent. No one tried to get her to quiet down, and no one did.
Zara Hawthorne-Calligaris and her husband, Constantine Calligaris, sat beside Skye. Where Skye was flowy fabrics and oversharing, Zara was pencil-skirts and pearls.
Zara’s expression was borderline unreadable, but even Alisa could notice the small glance the woman had stolen at John Oren, the old man's personal bodyguard and head of his security team.
The Hawthorne grandsons were… a different story.
They've known the old man the longest, Alisa’d pointed out the obvious in the confines of her mind.
Grayson had his elbows on his knees, his hands obscuring most of his face; Jameson had a small frown, looking up at the ceiling; Strangely, it was Xander that had the more unreadable expression of the three.
Three. Alisa frowned. Not four.
She turned to her father. “Papa.”
“May I be excused?”
“Hm?.. whatever for?” Asked her father, a slightly raised eyebrow creasing his features.
Alisa pursed her lips, squeezing her father's hand assuringly. “It'll only be for a moment.”
Once her father conceded, Alisa had politely excused herself from the solemnity of the funeral ceremony.
⊱───────────────⊰
Where is he? The purse of Alisa's lips tightened. There were four Hawthorne grandsons, and yet one of them had already decided upon himself to leave early.
It didn't take Alisa a long time to spot the beat-up motorcycle amongst the sea of cars parked near the property; and for a second, she remembered a small memory where she pestered its owner about getting it dismantled for parts.
It was no use, Alisa shook her head dismissively, making her way to the eldest Hawthorne grandson right as he mounted that piece of junk.
“Nash.”
Nash Hawthorne stole a glance at her and raised a brow. “Lee-Lee?”
“What’re you doin’?”
“I could ask you the same thing.”
“I'm leavin’.”
“In the middle of the funeral? Right before the burial?” Alisa knew the rocky relationship between Nash and his grandfather, but even she was appalled by this behavior.
“‘Hate to break it to ya, Lee-Lee, but Skye's waterworks ain't exactly pleasant to listen to.” Nash remarked, switching off the engine of his motorcycle and sitting to the side to face Alisa directly.
“I don't think that's a good enough excuse to leave in the middle of your grandfather's funeral.”
Alisa crossed her arms. Nash looked at her with those piercing eyes, looking at her up and down.
Lifting a hand, Nash grazed Alisa's cheek ever so slightly, tucking her hair behind her ear. And Alisa wished it didn't have the kind of effect on her the way it did.
“You know exactly why I'm leavin’ early, Lee-Lee.”
Because of your grief, because of your family, because of the old man. Alisa paused, her body tensing up at her last thought.
Because of me.
When she said nothing, Nash hummed, adjusting the worn-out cowboy hat he wore like a crown on his head.
He turned on the engine, revving up his motorcycle— all the while he maintained eye contact with Alisa Ortega; A girl who, if circumstances were different, would've been his wife.
“You take care, Lee-Lee.”
And there he went, driving out of the property without so much as a second thought. Away from all things Hawthorne. Away from Alisa.
Alisa looked down at the ground with clenched fists, a tightness in her throat as she whispered that self-made mantra over and over again.
“Never lose your heart to a Hawthorne.”

【 “I wouldn't marry Me, either” 】
“Are you the world-saving type?”
“No?” Avery guessed.
“Ever had your life ruined by someone with the last name Hawthorne?” Alisa continued. Avery stared at her, then managed to answer more confidently this time.
“No.”
Alisa smiled, but it didn't quite reach her eyes.
“Lucky you.”

Pookies what type of Alisa/Nash content would y'all like to see for I wouldn't marry me either 🧍♀️ (besides their break-up)
BECAUSE I HAVE SOME IDEAS
↳ Some ideas below the cut 🫶
✨Bowling✨ as one of their first dates (Hawthorne Legacy fans iykyk /j /j)
Nash giving Alisa a lot of cowboy hats so she can match him
Nash getting teased by his brothers because he's planning how to propose to Alisa (they were engaged, after all) and he wants the proposal experience to be unforgettable for both him and Lee-Lee
THE proposal scene
A bunch of Alisa birthday flashbacks bc in Games Untold Nash told Libby about how Tobias would talk to Alisa during her birthdays
We don't know Alisa's birthday, but I'd like to think that her birthday came AFTER she and Nash broke their engagement, and she'd have a conversation with Tobias
Little Alisa and little Nash flashback scenes ❤️❤️

Veronica McNamara
⊱────────────────────⊰
⊱───────────────⊰
OC for my Inheritance Games fanfiction, I wouldn't marry me, Either
Face Claim: Rachel Zegler
⊱───────────────⊰
Full Name ; Veronica McNamara
Nicknames : Vero, Vee (Alisa), Miss Sawyer (Jameson), Sweetheart (Mrs. Laughlin), Lady Justice (Xander), Roni (Elias), Vanessa (Skye)
Age : 24 (September 1st, Virgo ♍)
Occupation : Lawyer for McNamara, Ortega, and Jones || Business employer for Avery Kylie Grambs
Height : 144 cm
Color Palette : Latte brown, cream white, neutral green tones
° • ° • ° • ° • °
PERSONALITY
Veronica is a neutral positive kind of person, in a similar way to Alisa in terms of personal views— but that's where their similarities end.
Veronica is notably more optimistic than Alisa, if only by a bit; While she takes her job as a lawyer very seriously, it's generally accepted by Alisa and their other colleague — Elias Jones — that she's the most upbeat about having to wake up excruciatingly early to work at her parent's law firm with nothing to keep her awake outside of an excessive amount of caffeine.
RELATIONSHIPS
Alisa Ortega — Besties. They've been attached to the hip since childhood due to their parents working together!
Elias Jones(OC) — Really close friends! They met during their college days, and thanks to their parents being colleagues at their law firm, she, Elias, and Alisa have been closer than ever!
Nash Hawthorne — Kinda doesn't know how to feel about Nash ever since he and Alisa broke up, as they were her first exposure to what a relationship should be like, other than her parents. But other than that, she and Nash get along just fine. She still kinda holds out hope for him and Lee-Lee </3
Avery Kylie Grambs — Positive neutral, at best. Veronica sees Avery a lot less compared to Alisa, and she only visits Hawthorne House when it concerns threats against Avery's life; Avery's grown to be on friendly terms with Veronica after the incident in the Blackwood.
TRIVIA
LIKES : Coffee, picnics, dog walking, pal-lentines day, journaling, croquet, high fashion boutiques
DISLIKES : Waking up early, oversleeping, sleepwalking, anything remotely athletic (croquet is her exception), Skye Hawthorne /j
HOBBIES : Dog walking, journaling, crocheting, reading
Has a pet corgi named Heather
Is called ‘Miss Sawyer’ due to sharing a name with Veronica from Heathers
Is closest to Xander, out of all the Hawthorne brothers!
The youngest of the M, O, J trio! Elias is only two years older, while Alisa is 3-4 years older than her
Just a giant Heathers reference /j (If Veronica is Green for Duke, Alisa is Red for Chandler, and Elias is Yellow for McNamara which is funny since Veronica's the one with the last name McNamara)
Has five cups of coffee a day (Alisa is notably concerned, and it might've rubbed off on Xander)
During her high school days, she attended Heights Country Day with Elias, albeit not at the same time
Studied in Yale University with a degree in Law; Majoring in Political science and government, Minoring in Cognitive science

Can someone suggest some actors I could use as face claims for Elias 🧍♀️
I already have Rachel Zegler as Veronica, so all that's left is to give Elias a face claim for his character introduction 😭
Context: Veronica McNamara and Elias Jones are my ocs for the book series The Inheritance Games, and they'll be making minor appearances in my fanfic “I wouldn't marry me, either”

Elias Jones
⊱────────────────────⊰
⊱───────────────⊰
Second Oc for my Inheritance Games fanfiction, I wouldn't marry Me, either
Face Claim: TBA
⊱───────────────⊰
Full Name ; Elias Bouchard Jones
Nicknames : Eli (Veronica, Alisa), Prince Charming, Elias Darling, ‘Lias, Lie (Nash)
Age : 26 (January 18th, Aquarius ♒)
Occupation : Lawyer for McNamara, Ortega, and Jones || Employer in the Hawthorne Foundation
Height : 167 cm
Color Palette : Honey Yellow, Black, Varying shades of Brown
° • ° • ° • ° • °
PERSONALITY
Elias is... Well, he's like an older Jameson with a bit more of a Broadway flair to him. In a way, Elias was one of the many influences in Jameson's life that made him turn out the way he is.
Elias goes with the flow, unafraid of taking risks because, as a wise old man once told him, “You only live once”; and he happened to take that advice to heart.
Though he and Jameson share their similarities, Elias is less impulsive and reckless when it comes to making decisions with high risks— while he understands that he wants to live his life to the fullest, the little boy in his heart can't help but let paranoia overtake his decision-making every once in a while.
RELATIONSHIPS
Alisa Ortega — Close friends, and a fellow colleague! Elias met Alisa through Veronica, as well as the three's parents working together; while the trio aren't attached to the hip, they still care about each other a great deal.
Veronica McNamara(Oc) — Also close friends! During Elias' third year at Yale University, he met Veronica, who was a freshman at the time; thanks to their parents' partnership and them being coworkers at the same law firm, they've been closer than ever!
Nash Hawthorne — Mixed bag of feelings, the two of them. Nash trusts Elias well enough, but he can tell that Elias — in a similar vein to Nash's own brothers — had been influenced by his grandfather into being the way he is now. Elias has a hard time getting along with Nash due to, in Xander's words, his ‘unresolved grandaddy issues’; with it only amplifying tenfold when Nash and Alisa broke things off.
Jameson Hawthorne — Big influence in Jameson's life. They didn't interact much when Jameson was growing up, but the interactions they had sort of shaped Jamie into being who he is in the present day; in both good and bad ways. Mostly bad, on the part of Jameson's recklessness
Avery Kylie Grambs — Although he technically works for her, Elias doesn't interact much with Avery, which is a given as unlike Alisa, he isn't Avery's personal attorney.
TRIVIA
LIKES : 80s movies, thrifting, horseback riding, earrings, gossip
DISLIKES : Skye Hawthorne, Veronica and Alisa's caffeine addiction, overtime, movie remakes
HOBBIES : Movie marathoning, visiting clothing thrift shops, learning how to crochet, horseback riding
He, for some reason, does not like Skye Hawthorne and who can blame him /j /j
According to Veronica, Elias gives out the best hugs! (Xander confirmed her claims when Elias comforted him around the time Emily died, and his friendship with Rebecca and Thea seemed fell apart)
He jokingly flirts with Veronica and especially Alisa to garner a reaction from Mr. Ortega and Mr. McNamara 😭 (Nash too, but shhh)
He has the hospital on speed dial in case Veronica and/or Alisa collapse from being over caffeinated 💀💀 of the three, he's the only one with a seemingly normal sleep schedule and work ethic
Elias wanted Veronica to adopt a cat instead of a dog, but when she adopted her dog Heather, he adopted a cat out of spite (Alisa has no idea why they're like this)
