okay guys here is my rambly notes post for episode 3 of the bear!! these are becoming more and more unhinged as I go
carmy looks good (yet again)
okay listen can we just say what a slay it is that he is actually going to therapy. we make jokes about our meow meows needing therapy and here is carmy actually going.
also at some point I rlly want to make a list and scrub through screenshots so I can see what they all are. I need to know!!! but I love every single one of them hee hee
watching a show and being like “I want to make graphics based off of this scene” is kinda wild
anyways. cut from mention of abuse and not only allowing it to happen but unintentionally allowing it and then it cutting to the kitchen and how this is all yelling and screaming and fighting and it sucks!!! I just want to fight literallh all of them
carmy and his ptsd. one day I will go into this. but the thing he loves being a constant reminder of everything that has hurt him. the flashbacks to watching everything in the New York kitchen. AND the fact that he can fucking …. Recite every single aspect of it …. I fucking love him so much
Okay as someone who works small business the fact that the phone is always ringing in the middle of every conversation kills me. It’s so accurate
carmy being so focused on changing the chemistry. on how he can’t yell at everyone everyday. the fact that he is trying so desperately to not become what New York was!!! I also just like. I wonder if Mikey fostered some of that anger? was that why he kicked carmy out?????
there is just something about how he is so desperately trying to avoid what happens in episode seven and. yes I’m a carmy stan but I do not think all of episode seven is carmy’s fault in the fact that. episode seven is everyone recognizing how truly awful their dynamic is and that is the moment they all realize it can’t keep going and part of that is because they break carmy
carmy saying Michael wasn’t there instead of saying he’s dead :(( whatever. I want to
ok carmy get some more therapy !!!!!!
something something about how everyone is kind of pretending things are okay and dealing with Mikey being gone by doing the same things they did when he was alive because Mikey was never really there anymore anyways (all he did was isolate)
I want to kiss Carmen on the mouth !!!!!!!!!
I forgot he actually goes back to therapy this episode when he has his panic attack. Absolutely bizarre to watch a show where someone attempts to take care of their mental health
sydney …. I love you so dearly
I want richie’s gender tbh
won’t lie the lack of Richie this episode smh….. he might be my second fave behind carmy. I mean I love literally everyone on this show but !!
Something abt the unintentional ways that people hurt each other in this show. Hmmmm
“you kinda let everybody act like trash” yea …… Yeah … carmy
the whole conversation that Sydney thinks that this place could be different from everywhere the both of them have been. The fact that carmy doesn’t know how to listen??? Has anyone ever listened to him. Did Michael ever really listen??? SOMETHING SOMETHING.
I really like that this show is ultimately about communication. And how it’s not specifically about fixing people and their problems but about how much can change if people just communicate and think about each other a little more and this episode rlly shows that

this is sort of a silly question but what are some good opera recordings for someone who’s never watched opera before…. im VERY interested in the drama and stories and everything u talk about and have been wanting to watch some lately..
ehehehe (rubbing my hands together)... these will be video productions and not audio bc i find introductions work best with the videos
MY FAVORITE RECORDINGS OF MY BIG 4 FAVORITE OPERAS THAT I WILL NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT:
- don giovanni: salzburg festival 1987 owns so much. it's a very simple production (no 'gimmicks', set in original setting, kinda nothing special costumewise or setwise) but the acting and general flow is really good and gets across Exactly what don giovanni, as a piece of media, is. i think the met 1990 one is also good and is also good at getting across don g. but it's like... too glitzy sometimes and isn't as... idk... accurate. (i have a copy of the 1987 salzburg w/ subtitles so dm me about it, but i know both of these exist online but without subtitles.)
- the rake's progress: glyndebourne 2010 just GETS it. rake's is an opera that needs to be set in its original setting of like, a funhouse mirror version of the 18th century, and the hockney production (which this is) gets it like no other production. also the singers are good and have been nice to me on twitter dot com. there's other rakes that can be found online but they take the opera like... too seriously as an arthouse piece and not a funhouse one. (again i have a copy of this so dm me. it's in english but you probably will need to reference the (also online) libretto bc english opera sounds strange if you aren't used to it)
the marriage of figaro: oooh this one is hard. the other 3 here i can kinda point to like one thing or the other and be like 'thats it thats the one' but there's no production of marriage of figaro that sticks with me as The one. generally as long as it has subtitles and doesn't have the aforementioned arthouse feel youre fine LOL there's like 50 good ones on youtube
rigoletto: i like the 1982 ponnelle movie sue me. tbh this is less bc i particularly have a thing for the ponnelle movie as much as it is... like... sorry but nobody comprehends rigoletto in the same shrimp colors way i do so there's no production i've seen where i stop and go "yes this is IT" (mostly this is because directors do not know that the title character is disabled despite that being like the core of the entire show) but the 1982 movie is good. it is on youtube but i believe it does not have subtitles so you'd have to have a libretto on hand (thankfully that is also online)
other starter operas and their best productions-
the barber of seville: my mutuals would kill me and bury me in a roadside ditch if i didn't say the 2007 met opera one (which i have a link to but i would have to check for subtitles). the royal opera house one from 2009 (iirc? its the one where joyce didonato broke her leg) is also baller too tho but i'd have to search for it bc i haven't ripped my blu-ray of that yet
carmen: shit man the best carmen i've ever seen was a live show so this one is hard for me. the met one from... 2009? is good but now that ive seen a carmen that's like genuinely bone-chilling it's hard to find anything that compares
la boheme and la traviata: i'm putting these together because they're both 'girl gets tuberculosis and mcfucking dies' but in like different ways. and also bc i am not the expert on either of them so i'd have to do research (read: consult my mutuals and discord until someone reaches a conclusion) so put a pin in this one
il trovatore: trovatore is not usually considered a starter opera but its so integral to this blog as the Warrior Cats: The New Prophecy Opera that it needs to be mentioned. again nobody gets trovatore like i and da mutuals do so there's no trovatore that like, Has the emotional impact i think it should have so uh. watch either the met 2013 or 2015 one (which ik i have around somewhere but i'd have to track for subtitles) and then watch the hawkfrost 3rd planet pmv right after so you can Understand the Gravitas etc
others: ask me personally bc i talk about many more operas than just that and they are all insane.

What is the line between musical and opera? Are there any operas that have spoken lines in them? Is... is Into The Woods An Opera?? Help
Hey! Welcome, anon! Here’s the thing re: your first question: no one can really agree what that line actually is.
This is partly because YES! A lot of operas DO have spoken dialogue! The quick version:
you have singspiels, which are German operas with spoken dialogue. two of the most famous ones that immediately come to mind are Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) and Weber’s Der Freischütz (The Freeshooter).
you have opéra-comiques, which are like singspiels but French. among the most famous examples of this are Bizet’s Carmen (the original version, because it is common for Carmen productions to sing the spoken dialogue instead) and Donizetti’s La fille du régiment (The Daughter of the Regiment).
*there’s also a subgenre called opéra-bouffe and while 3 AM Me cannot tell you what, if anything, is the big difference aside from name. Emmanuel Chabrier’s L’Étoile (The Star) is a great example.
there’s (British) light opera, as personified by the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. people disagree a lot as to whether or not these are even operas at all (some say they’re operettas—see below), and this tends to be a really sensitive subject for some reason. I don’t know. it feels a bit elitist to me tbh. I’ve loved Gilbert and Sullivan since 2015, so yeah.
then there are lots of other random operas that just happen to have spoken dialogue or speeches at different points for different reasons. the 3 that immediately come to mind here (please forgive me, it’s 3 AM) are Verdi’s Macbeth and La traviata (in both cases, to depict people reading letters aloud) and Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle, in which there is a spoken prologue that’s really creepy and cool.
and then you get to operetta, which is where all the confusion happens. the two main brands of operetta are French and German/Austrian. now what’s the difference between operetta and opéra-comique or singspiel? it’s partly time period (operetta started in the mid-1850s and was very popular through about the 1930s) and partly just people calling their works operettas. what’s the line between operetta and musical? not much, actually!!!
for instance, Franz Lehár’s Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow) premiered in 1905 as a German operetta, but it then opened on Broadway not too long after that and was so successful that it immediately became a marketing trend. you’ve ever heard of the Merry Widow hats or corsets? it comes from that.
French operettas are a lot of fun. Jacques Offenbach literally made the genre and his are must-sees, particularly Orphée aux enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld), La belle Hélène (The Beautiful Helen), and La vie parisienne (The Parisian Life). Hervé is also a good composer of French operettas, although I’ve only seen Mam’zelle Nitouche (but it’s a RIOT).
German operettas are a lot of fun too. The two most famous ones are the already-mentioned Die lustige Witwe and Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus (The Bat). Strauss II and Lehár both wrote others, though, and there are lots of other ones out there too. (If you want small previews, there is a delightful album called Wien with tenor Jonas Kaufmann and soprano Rachel Willis-Sørensen that has excerpts from both Witwe and Fledermaus as well as several other German/Austrian operettas.)
Now, as to your last question, the man himself Stephen Sondheim said in 2016: “An opera is something done in front of an opera audience in an opera house. A musical play, or musical comedy, is something done on either a Broadway or off-Broadway stage before a musical theater audience.” So according to that definition, the answer would be no. However, I don’t think that definition is completely accurate, particularly because there is at least one case of a full-blown opera without significant spoken dialogue being performed on Broadway (Baz Luhrmann directing Giacomo Puccini’s La bohème—incidentally enough, the opera on which Rent is based—on Broadway in 2002).
So I think the answer simply has to be authorial intent and conception: do the composer and librettist(s) think they’re writing an opera, an operetta, or a musical? and that’s really what you have to go by. so to answer your last question: no, Into the Woods is not an opera because that is not what the creators thought of it as.
anyway, sorry if that got really confusing and long-winded. this is naturally a very confusing and complicated subject and I’ve tried to break it down as much as I-Woke-Up-At-3-AM-Me can. if you have any follow-up questions, dear anon, or really any questions at all, please do not hesitate to send them to me or anyone else on Operablr! we’re all lovely people, I promise.

It's super cool to hear you worked on carmen sandiego and I'd join the train of shock but!! instead, a question! Are there any characters in Carmen sandiego you personally relate to?
ooooh, good question! tbh there’s none that I like... personally relate to? but I love Ivy with my Entire Heart, I think her and Zack have really good accurate sibling energy (minus calling each other bro and sis lsdflksdj) and as someone with 4 siblings it’s something I can deeply appreciate (I actually did layout for the vogueing scene in the fashion episode, as well as a lot of the karaoke shots, and both made me so immensely joyful). I also appreciate a woman who’s a big doofus with moments of competency and feels very genuine! I always loved doing scenes with her :)
#snowwydaydreamr#ask#I did an actual shitton on the fashion episode#that was the episode where I stayed late a lot because I wanted to impress my sup#it worked but god never again
