A degree in obstetrics? “Well,~” he replied with a modest smile and a lilt in his tone, “I suppose it depends on who’s asking.”  He could, he was certain, furnish the papers to satisfy any Human clinic or hospital, should the need arise. "My knowledge of physiology is indeed thorough enough – though I must admit, I have received some – ah – negative feedback about my bedside manner.” Imagining shepherding certain of the Visoreds through the stages of maternal gestation left him with some trepidation. But as for the end result – if three bona fide  children – who had by all accounts been the product of genuine marital bliss – could be counted as success, he had, in fact, proven himself as something of an expert in the field of hybrid breeding. With Ichigo, he’d hit the genetic jackpot.

“First of all, for two souls to create life at all requires a reiryoku of lieutenant class or higher. So – being Visoreds – it is certainly possible for your friends. Second, the offspring would resemble their parents. I could assure you that your friends would have an excellent chance of passing on their Hollows to their first-born… though it could be a latent attribute that doesn’t express itself until the teenage years. Might be difficult to distinguish from puberty.” He paused, scratching his chin thoughtfully. “Also, that – ah – recessive trait might not show up in subsequent children, if the Kurosakis are any indication. But–” He placed a hand on Shinji’s shoulder and gave him a warm, knowing smile and a conspiratorial wink. “If you happen to find yourself in a family way, Hirako-san, may I suggest that Tessai would make an excellent midwife.” He paused, wiggling his brows suggestively.

“Are congratulations in order…?”

          The appalled expression that crossed Shinji’s face at Kisuke’s leading question was beyond comical. 

               “ Thanks for yer enthusiastic...er, wishes, but does it look like I wanna be a dad anytime soon? Also. I’m not the one who went around adoptin’ kids for free labor in their 'lil black shop, right. ” 

          Kisuke’s explanation was not entirely reassuring, unfortunately. It had always been a question at the forefront of their minds - whether if this hollow taint would spread to their progeny, should any one of them desire to create a family in the future. This was as much as confirmation of their worst fears. Perhaps the hollow could be contained and managed - they knew that, and look at how well Ichigo was doing - but with the traumatic experiences and suffering they all had gone though as a result of this unwanted, parasitic condition, none of them were keen on the idea of passing it to the next generation. 

          Shinji was unusually somber as he gazed at his scientist friend, dodgy and shifty as the other man could be, sometimes. Okay, most times.  

               “ Kisuke...is there any way to block the Hollow taint from bein’ passed on? Or failin’ that, ‘ta destroy it before it takes root in the child? ”
