You ever meet someone who will be a permanent wound on your soul? That's Bruce to him; they'll never be perfect, or get things just right but by god, he has done literally anything for Bruce Banner. Bruce hurts, even on the best days, but with how often he's bandaging an injury, it's a familiar ache; that may as well be good at this point, he's alive and he's always been a fool. "Wait, does this mean you've read fanfic about us?"

❝ Bruce baby ❞ was a terrible way to start this answer. It's a question that no one should ever ask because no one wanted to hear the answer from Clint. They didn't want to know the things that he knew. Whoever turned Clint Barton onto the wider world of fanfiction made a grave mistake that'll haunt the minds of many for decades. ❝ I had a very haunting dream after reading Sparkleheartfartz37's fanfic about gaping holes in the avengers kink list two shot featuring yours truly and Mr Big and Green. It also featured some side Thor and Tony. ❞

He is not going add that was included with an extremely confusing wet dream to follow. Some people were good writers, should pursue careers in erotica. He needs more cowboy erotica writers out there. ❝ I perruse, on the occasion, no one quite captures how dark your humor is. Blanket statement time ⸺ Life sucked. ⸺ Full stop, put a period at the end of that statement. Go no farther, read no more. LIFE SUCKED. At the present moment, there was nothing that would change his mind from that train of thinking. It's the kind of thought that only stopped being had after a collusion (death). To which, he was sure one of these days, sooner or later, his luck won't be able to stop him from dying of an injury. Modern medicine won't save him and a mentally ill witch won't yoke him back into reality.

Clint falls as though he has been tossed through a wood chipper; th familiar feeling of pain seeping back into bone and muscle. It's all manageable, he's already taken the scheduled dose of muscle relaxant, and things will ease. His face still feels like it was burning off, but he's been assured that the antidote is working.

Ninjas with poisoned blades (which last he checked weren't ninjas Daredevil or Iron Fist's problems) had gotten him pretty good this time. One mistake and his position had been compromised; obviously, he was the victor but victory rarely came without blood and bruise. Aches and pains and maybe something to do with being in his forties. There's a very real future where he will die if he can't keep up; where he'll be pressured to retire but he can't stop himself from being the Avenger, just a guy with a bow determined to solve some problems.

Bruce interrupts the melancholy collecting in his mind, with an observant about his current state. For effect, Clint turns his face towards the other man and gives him a smile (at least he has all his teeth this time).

❝ At least they had the big boy band-aids this time. ❞ He has, in fact, been covered in varying degrees of child-friendly band-aids from transformers to hello kitty and anything in between. Clint doesn't bother removing himself from the couch, but he does try to shuffle his body further into the back cushion to make room if Bruce has finally decided to grace him with company. ❝ Besides, it's not like the Avengers ever let me at the adult table anyways. ❞

He laughs, turning over onto his side and flicking through cable channels with the remote before a thought hits him. Something Clint obviously needed to ask Bruce. ❝ I'm still pretty right? So nothing lost, no big deal. ❞ Unless he's ugly, then this would be the worst day ever until the next day.

It's a comment that he has heard before; one of those things that have became an artifact of the Avengers gossip mill as old as him, as old as Tony's red thong. The answer has always been shrugged off, sometimes with a lie and most of the time with half truths.

He has always treated it like the answer was obvious as though it was idiotic of the one asking to even ask. No one gets the whole truth because Clint doesn't even know what he can say. Things with Bruce may be his most complicated not-relationship he's ever not-been in through his whole life.

There's no definition because by the time that the goings were good; the hammer had to be brought down on their heads. The Hulk appeared or trouble arose, Bruce is leaving again, or even Clint's not in the place for Bruce to be in his life again. He's in another relationship and then there has been time apart. Bruce never allowed them to put any sort of word to them; they worked best if they didn't speak.

Even if there were hundreds of things he could say. Clint's a guy with feelings and he knows he's been in love with the man for the worst halves of two decades. The trouble was that he doesn't fall out of it; every person in his heart was a wound, a scar, that would never go or fade away. So the answer he wanted to give was that is because he is in love with Bruce Banner. The wistful thinking was that the other avenger shared the sentiment.

❝ Well, when you shoot a guy in the head ⸻ ❞ He says with a laugh, a good hearted smile as he shrugs off the observation. ❝ After knowing him for almost two decades; then you end up getting real familiar. ❞

Bruce is a heavy weight to bear. ❝ He's a fellow avenger, they're my family. I'd be concerned if we didn't get awfully close after everything. ❞

How does he put this politely? That is a trick question because there is no way that anything coming out of Clint's mouth was going to sound polite enough. Considering the fact that SUNBEAM was one of his nicknames back in the early days because he did a whole lot of insulting and complaining.

Clint's not exactly a ballerina, he doesn't know how navigate a potentially prickly topic of appearances with any sort of grace. At least, he thinks that may be what this is about, with how Clint notices the dark look in Bruce's eye for a split second as he looked in the mirror. So this was how their morning after was going to be; one of the rare ones where he got have Bruce stick around.

❝ Yes. ❞ That's not what he meant. The internal thought process hadn't finished before he was thinking. ❝ I mean ⸺ ❞ Clint exhales because he didn't mean yes and now he thinks he knows where this was coming from. ❝ C'mon, Bruce, that was just dirty talk. ❞ Although, Bruce Banner did have the looks of a drowned puppy whose been kicked down a well and in need of a lot. Now don't say that thought out loud.

❝ And I liked that last night; and right now, you look just fine. ❞ It does dawn on him that he was not to suppose to hear what Bruce said out loud; that there had been an internal conversation going on that Bruce was having with himself or maybe one of the others in his head.

❝ OH, BANNER! ❞ He says as he puts together what Bruce was asking him here; DATING ADVICE. That either means there's someone he's into, which mean the little birds (himself) will have to get nosy and find out more.

Now to answer that question, what better way to explain it than to teach by example. ❝ Anyone else mention how you LOOK all aloof, pen stuck between your lips, tapping as you think about a note you want to scribble down? ❞ He asks, thinking he's pretty smooth for noting the observation that he's made. SHOW THEM YOU ARE PAYING ATTENTION. Clint takes Bruce by the arm, looping his arm to start to walk them off as if he is leading him down the learning lane of flirting.

"I'll be alright. Are you?" Referring to Clint's divorce anniversary, because you know he gotta check up on his best friend

It hadn't quite dawned him that it was Valentine's Day, all he had was a reminder scheduled on his phone yearly to check in on Bobbi. The divorce process had been dragged out for years. Part of that had to do with the both of them dying, or getting kidnapped by Skrulls, or Wanda Maximoff breaking reality and superheroics getting in the way of sitting down and doing the paperwork.

The marriage had been over longer than the divorce being finalized. Even if there were three instances of them trying again, trying to rekindle the relationship and romance. One of those times even involved couples therapy. Trouble with being Clint is that the love doesn't die, that one person doesn't stop being someone he wants to hold dear just because things were over.

It's only been three years since the paperwork was delivered to him by Bobbi on today of all days. He's fine; technically he's over her (except he wasn't even over Natasha, the breakup with Jessica as fresh as his divorce paperwork, and he especially never quite over Bruce). Thinking of Bruce; he's the one that reminds him of the day on the calendar.

It's not obvious; if anyone else heard the conversation they wouldn't have concept. They've known each other a long time, the man will always be his best friend, knows him well enough and how Clint was about relationships. How he's tried to be about Bruce too; but he's learnt never to push. He's single, and Bruce is around, and he's on his mind but this was simply a friendly question. Something caring because he knows, everyone probably knows how much his relationship with Bobbi had mattered; the pride at which he felt being married and the despair at when he lost her, and pain for the hurt they inflicted on each other.

All his relationships were with their pains. At this point, Clint thinks he can't go without pain being the mainstay of his life, especially when it came to romantics.

❝ Eh, I'll be alright. It's just a day like any other. She hasn't texted back. ❞ Bobbi missed his call. He's guessing she maybe doesn't want this to become tradition. He tends to make sentiment out of everything. ❝ It's a nothing day, gonna kills some hours and go pick up some street food and a two pack. Tacos and beer if you wanna hang. ❞ An open invite that he'd think nothing of if Bruce doesn't want to join him.

Who would have guessed that Banner would turn about ten degrees cooler after Clint's stopped and stuffed the nerd full of food and a sugary drink? CLINT WOULD HAVE GUESSED.

The trick was that he had to make sure thrusting food upon man wasn't done in a condescending way; that was the mistake that over the years he has seen made. In Bruce's support, Clint would hulk out and punch a guy too if they gave him a slice of pizza or a hot dog with a stress look like he would turn into a rage monster too.

The archer hadn't been concerned about that at all, but in his defense he had been cheating and simply knew the telltale signs of neglecting to care for one's self. So he got out for a walk, food and water, and Clint is aware of how much it sounds like he's thinking of him like a dog. Yet he would point out that dogs and people were similar; honestly anything with lungs were similar enough.

Same basic needs. Food, water, and sunlight. Social time (see Clint and Bruce an hanging out). ❝ Mfee whad I 'ell mew. ❞ See what I tell you is what he means to say but he was stuffing his face with food and trying to smile at Bruce. ❝ Gwad t' dew it. ❞ Glad to do it.
