Born in a small town in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Vincent was brought up in a strict and religious household. Days on the farm had would be tough for a pale and lanky boy like Vincent but days at the temple were harder. He had spent many days at the church, trying to find better ways to be a dutiful worshiper of his community's god. Spent many summers at sleepaway camps to keep himself devoted to the one and true. But tragedy after tragedy befell Vincent and his family, causing him to leave the faith.
Once he left the Pleasant Grove church, he was approached by people similar to him, people who shared a divine otherness as their genetic predecessor. Through them, Vincent found out the knowledge of his lineage, his real mother being a goddess Agape. She was a goddess of not only love, but divine love. Finding out about her and her role in Vincent's life seemed to have made sense to him at the time. His need to devote to higher powers and their avatars explained.
He decided to join the group of fellow demigods. After all, they promised him strength, knowledge, and most important of all a clean bed and a warm meal. For a short while, Vincent was happy. He was able to pray to his mother, devote his time to not just her but the camp. Sometimes he'd receive strength, other times he'd receive knowledge. All bonuses to doing what came naturally to the demigod of Agape.
However, as time went on, Vincent's power plateaued. The knowledge coming into him was beginning to sound like telegrams for other demigods at camp. His connection to his mother seemed to sour with each new ritual and tribute he gave her. But then, on a dark night during one of his midnight devotionals, Vincent hears her voice. He hears his mother.
"Foolish boy." She says, the tone of it resembling something to a sob. Something that Vincent was able to discern as his rosy cheeked smile turns to face her, the joy and innocent rejoice of hearing his mother's words leaving his eyes. Replaced with a sheen of welled up tears as Vincent hears her harsh words. "You make a mockery out of us."
"Out of me."
Vincent's eyebrows furrow as he brings himself to kneel in front of his mother's apparition. His skin gathered into goosebumps as he felt his mother's touch, her fingers dragging against his jawline to meet the tears flowing down.
"You've forgotten your place here. Your role." She talks not out of bitterness, nor anger, but in a soft gentle reprimand. "I am the goddess of divine worship and Zeus is the most divine of us all. And like those that pale to his bloodline, you too must stand behind and worship his progeny. Do this and you will be spared the punishment from a mother."
But Vincent refused.
And with that, she curses Vincent. She curses him to never feel the euphoria of worship again. Showing Vincent his so called mistake in giving faith into something that didn't want to be worshiped, and according to his mother, didn't deserve it. Strangely enough, his punishment didn't require him to leave the camp of demigods. In fact, he was expected to stay. He was expected to serve the gods and their spawn, to watch them grow past him, to receive bounties from simply sneezing correctly. A part of his punishment for being so eager to forget his family history. His mother may have been Agape, but Vincent forgotten - even the divine worship the divine. In the end, Vincent's true mistake was forgetting the divine's set in stone nature.
Leaving the camp behind him, Vincent attempts to regain his euphoria of worship on his own. Finding out about the Acolytes, Vincent saw it as an opportunity to gain it back, but perhaps not in the usual sense. He'll see every grain of worship and whispered prayer he's given to Agape be return to him. With the vacant seat amongst their highest ranks, Vincent saw the key to his plan, to his power, to his revenge.
