So Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu is said to be a style created to bit one swordsman against many but it has many battoujutsu moves, and at its core battoujutsu is a dueling move, best used against a single opponent to end a duel quickly, even the succession technique move is a battoujutsu, the failure of which would end in death, high-risk high reward. 

So Either, the first Hiko Seijirou also added these moves, or, as the needs of Kenjutsu changed from the Sengoku era into the Edo era, so did the style. Kenshin edits move to suit him, and He prefers different styles of moves over his master, ETC He has mastered Battoujutsu and his favorite movie is Ryu Tsui Sen, but Hiko Seijiro XVIII’s favorite is best is Ku Zu Ryu Sen. This probably means the previous masters and apprentices have edited moves to suit their needs and passed on the new versions in some awkward game of Hiten telephone. 

Is the Hiten we see in the Manga the same Hiten the first Hiko Seijirou created? With centuries apart is hard to say, but I want to say the style evolved and changed with the needs of its wielders, though with such a small pool pf practitioners the spirit of the style stays intact. 

It’s a real ship of Theseus situation here. 

Makes me wonder how it would continue to evolve if Kenshin wasn’t so adamant on being the last ‘Hiko Seijirou’
