Honestly, the biggest advice I can give readers is to kind of blow off Goodreads reviews unless you know (I mean, know personally or know as in follow) and trust the reviewer. If the reviewer is someone whose taste you know, you can generally trust what they say. Not to pat myself on the back, but as an example—if you follow my reviews and recs, you probably know at this point that I like things like high heat books, lots of angst and drama, "unlikable" heroines, alphas, etc. You can also probably assume, if you like what I like but ALSO like cozy romances, if I two-star a cozy romance for being cozy, it may not be that the book is bad. It's that I do not like a lot of cozy books, comparatively.

Maybe those reviewers you don't know are dead on; maybe their tastes are completely different from yours. MY taste does not align with a lot of what many people on GR seem to want from romance at the moment, so I disregard a lot of 'em. I will pay more attention if they complain about how slow a book is; I can enjoy a slow book, but it's not my favorite. If they complain about choppy writing, I take it more seriously. When a reviewer digs into how unlikable a heroine is... I know I may differ. Wildly.

Also, GR rewards bad reviews. You're more likely to get likes if you rant and rave, and a lot of GR reviewers value likes and follows. For me, it's really just a review platform. For many people, it's social media.

FINALLY:

I liked The Duchess in His Bed quite a bit! 4.25/5 for me, I believe. The heroine was not at all unlikable. She's a bit of an ice queen (I like those) and obviously, she's working on a scheme to have a baby and secure an inheritance... A plot I've seen in multiple other romances... And she's asking a lot of the hero. She's imperfect. She doesn't treat him with kid gloves. He's probably a somewhat better person than she is, on paper. All of these things means lots of people on GR will hate her.

Tbh, I find negative reviews on GR more valuable, generally, in that they tell me what I will like about a book. "This book is too smutty", "I hated this third act brekaup", "this heroine is awful" LMAO give it to meeeeee
