thinking about the stare-offs between dany and drogon. they are long, so long, it feels as if the world has gone still, and during these moments, dany and her fierce son are still, as well; their only movements, it seems, are the slightest changes in expression. if you look, you'll see the brief flare of nostrils, the tick of a jaw, the lift of a chin, the narrowing of eyes. when they stare at each other, it truly is a battle of wills, of domination . . . and no matter how long it takes, dany is never the one to back down. when drogon finally looks away, it's slowly and with a very final turn of the massive head and a light puff of smoke. rhaegal, wild child that he is, does dare to challenge his mother in fits of anger and expressions of temper, but he is much too impatient to hold out for as long as drogon. at times, he'll put his face close to dany's, not to frighten her, no, but to express his conviction. usually, he is met with her stepping forward and hardening her gaze. when he backs down, it's with a furious shriek, and he'll either stomp off with thunderous steps or take off into the sky. viserion is by far the sweetest of dany's children; all he really wants is the love and affection of his mother. when she levels a look at him, it is typically sufficient. he bows his head to her with a cry, hoping that she will embrace him or coo at him. now, when dany relents in these stand-offs with her sons, it is never with the fall of her head; rather, she does so with words, valyrian words, and then she softens, going to give them scratches beneath the chin or strokes along the nose.
