The Spreadsheet Digest | Vol 29

Howdy folks!

This is the final Spreadsheet Digest of 2023! I started the spreadsheet back in May as a way for me to keep up with everything I read. Basically, I was having trouble finding fics I had read so I could reread them or I was getting two chapters into a new series before realizing I'd already read it. So I did what I do and I made a spreadsheet about it. Then I felt like other people might benefit from a searchable list of fics. Then, and I don't know why, I thought people might want to know what I thought about the stuff I was reading. And here we are - 29 volumes and 34 weeks later.

Sorry for long intro! This week I have 16 fics for you (Frankie, Joel, Max Phillips, Javi P, Ezra, Dieter, Dave York, and Jack/Whiskey). Summaries and Tags provided by the author where applicable - sometimes I filled in some stuff.

Summary: A short ode to Joel's coat. / a bath with Joel Tags: Angst and intimacy. 1 reference to blood and allusion to canon typical violence (nothing is described) Thoughts: God i love little intimate moments like this... wrapping yourself up in Joel's coat, washing the bad day out of his curls... I am SICK! Someone let me hold this man, please.

I'll Leave a Light On For You - Max Phillips one shot by @oonajaeadira

Summary: Max has reservations when it comes to love, and for very good reasons. Tags: Angst. Character death. Allusions to the atrocities of war and its lasting effects. Max is a vampire. Traumatic soul memory. Me assuming I know anything about French culture of the 1930s. Thoughts: This is beautiful. Just absolutely stunning. I have a fascination with the concept of past lives, and I adore the way it's written about it here. There are some really interesting takes on it here with Max being a vampire. Also, side note, this fic made me cry. It's that soft angst that you don't expect to make you sob, but holy shit. When it hit (you'll know it when you read it) it hit. I was devastated. And then because it's adira and "we do soft here" it ends sweet.

Once in a Blue Moon - Dieter one shot by @whatsnewalycat

Summary: You're the only person working when a Christmas blizzard rolls into town and snows you in with a notoriously difficult guest, Dieter Bravo. Tags: one shot, slight dub con elements (power imbalance, isolation, alcohol) although both parties are enthusiastically consenting, hotel guest x hotel staff, blizzard, Minnesota because that’s my best friend, dieter generally being an ‘if you give a mouse a cookie’ ass bitch, kinda enemies to lovers???, Christmas, loneliness, palm reading, food and eating, cannabis, conspiracy theory mention, fluuuuuufffff, smut, dirty talk, a dash of conflict, painting stuff, power outage, poverty mention Thoughts: Aly has this way of writing Dieter that is like she knows him in real life. He feels so personal and real to me in her stories. I think I say this every time I talk about her fics, but my Dieter would not exist without hers. Anyway -- this fic is wonderful. Dieter has all that silly druggie boy charm he always has, there's a really interesting inclusion of him having PTSD from working on the movie from The Bubble and a really interesting way that he's dealing with it. It's got perfect vibes for us christmas haters too. I loved this so much.

Summary: You are Javier’s newest informant. You’re not his usual type but he’s willing to make an exception. More than one. Tags: smut, sex work, canon typical violence, javi being a moron Thoughts: I adore a lovers to idiots to lovers story... and man is Javi an idiot. The characterization of Javi here is perfect. Protective!Javi is very canon and I love seeing it in fic. Also, I don't normally go for miscommunication tropes (they tend to annoy me) but this was perfect. I loved every second of this story.

The Serpent Under It - Dave York one shot by brandyllyn

Summary: Dave is very good at his job Tags: Canon typical violence. kinda dark yo, soulmate AU Thoughts: I don't typically read soulmate AUs, but I actually read several of brandyllyn's this week. They're very different from the normal trope. This one broke my heart and it's less than 800 words.

To perish twice - Javi P series by brandyllyn

Summary: You can feel when your soulmate comes. Tags: smut, soulmate AU, Javi being an idiot, male masturbation, piv sex Thoughts: This is what I mean... you can feel when your soulmate has a fuckin orgasm??? What a concept. This was really hot, kind of funny, and had just the right amount of angst.

Cross My Heart - Ezra one shot by brandyllyn

Summary: While waiting at a clinic for the hope of a prosthetic arm, Ezra meets a woman who will change his life Tags: Talk of self harm / suicide but no one does it, discussion of medical procedures and prostheses, some use of ability based slurs by Ezra and others, canon typical violence Thoughts: We love a man who will threaten to murder someone's entire family for you... no seriously. I absolutely love Ezra's characterization here and I love the FMC's story AHHH. It's just a very sweet story... with a little Ezra flair.

Into the Shade - Ezra series by brandyllyn

Summary: Why would anyone fake having a soulmate? Tags: Ezra being Ezra, con man!ezra, soulmate AU, smut, Ezra x OFC smut, Ezra x reader is in there though. Thoughts: Yet again, the typical soulmate concept has been turned on its head here, and I love it. I also adore the flores animae - the particular soulmate mechanic in this fic. It's really interesting!

Dreams are Sweet Until They're Not - Jack Daniels series by brandyllyn

Summary: A crimson rose could only mean one thing. Tags: soulmates au, Jack being a slut, angst, smut, happy ending Thoughts: Okay last soulmates AU on the list, sorry. I went a little nuts. They're just so good. The ending of this one was so sweet, dude.

Patricio Keeps a Journal, Pt. 1: Winter

Good. Things. Take. Time. is a series that grew out of prompts–the whisper of a character, the asks of readers. And now, to get myself back into PATS’s head, the prompts are coming from @fanfticionoverload’s Seasons of Life challenge.

What you’re about to read are some excerpts from Patricio’s journal. Heads up they probably won't make much sense if you haven't read the ongoing series.

Each excerpt is just that–snippets that pertain to the story, taken from his presumed wider journal, each notated where it lands in the series and follows the chronology of the series.

The rules of the challenge ask for 250 words per prompt. I thought it would be a little less forced if I didn’t worry so much about that, so some may fall short of that number. And I’ll say that these aren’t heavily edited nor are they anything other than basic reactions, precisely because I wanted them to feel like the unfiltered thoughts one writes in a journal.

Let’s say that it was Shell’s orders for him to keep a journal in the first place. If his practice is his way of dealing with his demons, if he’s not going to go to traditional therapy, then “the least you can do is just offload before bed, and not the kind of offloading you do with your dick. I’m not gonna read it, but I’ll want to see words on those pages. Write a fucking play for all I care, write a manifesto about your love of pasta, I don’t give a shit what. Just write.”

I don’t have anything to write. I’m not a fucking poet. Shell says use the pen, get the words out of your head, just write anything. Anything. Anything. Tables have turned. Now I’m the one practicing letting it all out. Trying not to think too hard.  Anything.

EXCERPT 1: SNOW

TIMELINE: a few days before Good. Things. Take. Time.

#39 gifted me four tickets to the game at her last session. It’s Neils’ birthday. I’ll surprise him and Dan with a guy’s night out.

Got a new client coming in on Thursday. #48. I wasn’t going to approve her. Nothing in her application hints at any lingering trauma that she can’t just get treated at a legit clinic. But Shell was pushy about this one. She's got a knack for these things and hasn’t been wrong yet. Official referral diagnosis: pain is psychological tension from a recent(?) divorce. I guess it’s worth a shot. If nothing else, divorcees are usually just in need of a good fuck so it’s an easy fix. Good photo. I like her style. She’s going to make pretty faces.

Thinking about taking some time off after that. Rare confluence of three clients ending their run at the same time, it’s slow season at the office and the guys can handle a week without me, I should get out of town. Someplace quiet. Or fuck, I don’t know, someplace distracting where I can get out of my head. Maybe I should book a massage. Look at me, I’m hilarious. Who massages the masseuse? I’ll have Shell find me something. Keep it interesting. Place yer bets: seedy and cheap or golden toilets and happy endings? As long as it’s somewhere warm.

Renee posted the pictures from her honeymoon. Skiing in the Alps. She always used to hate the snow. Guess people change. Change can be a good thing. 

She’s better off.

EXCERPT 2: SCARF

TIMELINE: The night of Good. Things. Take. Time.

…

Shell hit the jackpot on this one. Perfect plaything. She’s like I custom ordered a client. Recurring cluster knots all down her starboard teres major, needs a hand getting in under the port shoulder blade…can’t do it alone. Needs my hands. She needs me. Follows directions, trusts completely. Has a good imagination. That will open up more in time. I expect a challenge out of this one. Surprised the shit out of me with the beautiful thing though. Maybe shouldn’t have let her have that. Maybe shouldn’t have gone down on her. It’s fine. She’s clean. Tastes good smells good ass for days. I can get a good handful. Everywhere.

And perfect inside. Tight but not too tight, good control with the right assistance, takes direction like a dream. I’ll be able to get her to sing if she keeps listening. Mierda, her skin. My hands want to eat it. Oil it up and map it out and scarf it down. Her muscle structure is    -just-    amazing. I haven’t been this amped in months. This one hits the spot.

Giving her Thursday across the board might have come off too eager. Well, if that didn’t, offering up extra days on call probably did. Jackass.

Not gonna worry about that tonight. Bowling with the guys tomorrow night. Hope they’re ready to eat their damn balls. I’m fucking invincible.

She called me beautiful. She’s [sentence scratched out] 

Forgot to note in her file–she said she hasn’t had anyone make her come in over a year even though info says she’s only been divorced a few months. What kind of an asshole just walks away from that her? How could anyone share a bed or a house or anything with that and resist for a year? She deserves to get fucked every day. Why wouldn’t you want someone that just falls into you so willingly and fucks so pretty? Great. Now I’m angry. Not my concern. Just my gain.

EXCERPT 3: COZY 

TIMELINE: weekend evening, after installment #2, relieving period cramps

Keep thinking about Thursday. It’s not about the blood. It is and it isn’t. It’s obviously that she needed relief. It’s good to see her trusting. That can be tricky for some women. Beaten into them that they have to hide what their body does. It’s a body. It’s a unique mechanism. It has shit and blood and needs a good release now and then. Or every day for some people...another truth for some of us that the world wants hidden away.

The blood’s messy. It’s primal. It’s brutal and nobody blinks an eye if it comes from a punch to the face or a slice of the thumb. But the minute it comes from the minute it shows you what  a woman’s body is capable of… But it’s also the harshness of the color, a signal that if there’s pain then it’s real. It’s a helpful focus.

She just LETS me. There's beauty in that pliability. She trusts, she follows, she heals. The way her face just relaxes when the knots are gone. It’s almost as good as the orgasm itself. Beautiful.

Got her all warmed up in the bath, all cozy in bed. Fell asleep like a worn-out kitten and I had an urge to kiss her forehead. Poor thing just needed it today. Successful session.

EXCERPT 4: FIREPLACE 

TIMELINE: a couple of weeks later, evening, after installment #3, the treatment for migraine and anxiety AND includes this six sentence ficlet

Well shit. There’s a coincidence. She wouldn’t believe me if I told her.

Thursday came in tonight tight as a screw, migraine a good 7 or 8. I had to take it slow. Asked her to focus on some bright spots in her life, like her favorite things. I might have guessed the animals and reading, but the fanfiction was a surprise. Cute. It was best not to talk about what was causing the stress because

Her family coming to stay.

Fuck if I don’t sympathize. 

Mama got here two days ago and all she can do is complain about her hotel and American food and how everyone speaks too fast for her to keep up. It’s cold here. The hotel should have a fireplace. Why don’t you take time off Patricio? You have an extra bedroom, why can’t your mama sleep there?

I love her. But I get it. There are just some boundaries that are hard. I get you, Thursday.

Preciosa.

Fucked her five ways til Sunday. She fucked ME five ways till Sunday.. She drew blood. Didn’t even care. Mark me up, girl. Glad I could help, but damn that might have been more mutually beneficial than I’d originally planned.

EXCERPT 5: HOT CHOCOLATE 

TIMELINE: night of installment #4, with the undergarment ripping and the thigh-highs

I didn’t expect to get to play this much. I’m usually so focused on the pain and making sure the client can come in their condition that there’s not a lot of room for fun and surprises. I got to take Shell out last weekend and might have bought her too many beers and pull-tabs. It took her about three bottles to get profound. She wants to know who "therapies the therapist" and told me I should remember that it’s okay to put my own priorities first sometime. She said that people in the industry of care need to be taken care of too. She said it’s okay to have a client that gives as good as she gets. Then she went home and threw up and texted me the next day that she’s drinking nothing but hot chocolate from now on. Haha

Shit. Thursday feels good when she walks out of here. She looks like a million bucks. I did that. I DO that. THAT’s what I need. So yeah. Why shouldn’t I enjoy that? Cute tonight. She wanted me to rip her panties. All she had to do was ask, but I think she was embarrassed to?

So the new diagnosis is lack of confidence and the treatment is for her to speak up for what she wants. We’re going to get her to a place where she can ask–or demand what she needs. We’ll work on her trusting that I’ll give her anything she wants–anything. 

She’ll be able to walk out of here and conquer the world when I’m done with her.

EXCERPT 6: FREEZING 

TIMELINE: a couple of weeks after the previous entry

[….] and Niels can go to hell though because I don’t care how low key it is or how good the whiskey is, I’m not giving up my Thursdays to fill in the hole in his poker night. His basement is freezing and I have warmer places to be.

Although speaking of, Thursday canceled again. It’s been a couple of weeks. Crunch time at work for her I guess. Her portal messages seem pretty stressed. She’s apologetic about missing sessions. I can tell her she doesn’t need to apologize, I’m getting paid whether she shows or not. And honestly, it just means we’re going to have to work that much harder to get her malleable again and I can hardly complain about that. A build up’s a hell of a thing. As long as she doesn’t mess up her rhombs again. We were just making headway on that. I should ask her about her desk chair.

But I’d be lying if I said that I gave a shit about the pay. I’m allowed to enjoy my clients and be disappointed when I don’t get to see them.

At least Jean’s back on Friday. It will be nice to see her again. Now that her latest surgery’s all healed up, we can find her some good positions for her to take home. I know her partner’s skittish about the discovery phase. But she’s almost done and when the reconstruction’s over, he’ll thank me for it. He SHOULD thank me for it, she’s got a good laugh and good tits.

Jean’s a perfect example of learning to speak up for herself. I can do the same for Preciosa. Lucky for her she doesn’t have Jean’s level of pain to work through. But she’s gotta show. up. for. it. Come on, girl. I got you.

EXCERPT 7: MARSHMALLOW

TIMELINE: directly after installment #5, all pent up and feral

Now THAT. Was a successful fuck. We’re making headway here. Little slapping, little biting, she got a good few hair yanks in there. She’s learning that not only am I not a marshmallow…neither is she. Good girl. Pretty high praise response, but she’s also got a little fight in her. She’s a switch and doesn’t even know it. She will. 

There were some real emotions tonight, real anger, real tears. But when she let go I nearly wept myself. It was beautiful. She’s working too hard and she knows it. But she also knows I’ve got her when she does. Hopefully that will preempt some of the stress next time. Not even upset about that shoulder blade. We’ll just start from the beginning on that.

Just reminded me of Renee nagging about working too hard. I just remembered that I had a dream about her a few nights ago. Not really about her. She was in the background somewhere and not even angry that I didn’t stop to say hello. Then she picked up her purse and left. The light kind of shifted like, I don’t know. Felt like it was the last time I’d see her. Not in a bad way. 

It’s good. Like a door really closing.

Maybe I do work too hard. But I like it. It’s who I am. It’s my choice.

It is rough because this is only 2nd draft, but this is from @the-andromeda-effect

"I apologize for the intrusion, but it appears Mrs. Andros had gone missing, sirs."  Lars didn't move, waiting for the explosion. 

"Missing? How the fuck has she gone missing?  She was supposed to be with you!" It wasn't an explosion but Caliban was upset and had gotten up and out of his chair to head to the door before it had even sunk in for Theron.

"She was at the table on the back veranda, I turned around to get her more coffee from the carafe left for us,  and when I turned back she was gone." Lars explained as he backed up out of Caliban’s way.

By the time Caliban made it to the door his gun was drawn with the safety off.  Theron was behind him in the same manner.  Lars hit the button on the mic pinned to his collar, "Mrs. Andros is missing, scour the estate. No one in or out of the gates." Then he fell in line behind the other two men.

Guards all over the estate were looking for a female they weren't familiar with.   While Lars was the only one who knew what she looked like, being told it was Mrs. Andros missing was enough for everyone else.  

The entire mansion was searched, including closets and areas that were only accessible with keys or codes. Inside every vehicle was searched, including the trunk.  Staff were duplicating efforts, just in case something was missed.  The longer that it went without Lars hearing anything in his ear, the more his stomach fell.  He remembered hearing Mircea Kalavati's name the night before. If the man had found a way onto the property, it could he a disaster. 

"I don't know who she is but Kondrat is dragging a beautiful dark haired female in beige pants and a light top towards the front gate with his gun to her head. Lars, that's not her is it?" Svarog's voice came through Lars' earpiece and the bodyguard almost stumbled.  What the fuck?!

"Yes, that is Adira Andros!" Lars all but yelled into his mic.  "Whoever the fuck is closest to Kondrat, stop that fucking idiot and get Mrs. Andros to safety immediately!" Lars had turned and started running in the direction of the drive as soon as he'd heard.   He could hear Caliban and Theron swearing behind him.   There was little doubt that they would be looking for a new guard for the estate soon.

Intro to my infodump on Alphecca but also I’m getting more and more shameless about it so I’ll probably dump a lot of other shit too later but back to the point: I never tend to stop mutating characters in my head but for all intents and purposes Alphecca is at a point where I’m satisfied with how fleshed out she is in my mind, so I figured I’d write it down. 

SO basically a rundown:

Alphecca’s main purpose is to be the “Season 1” villain, in which her part in the story can be expanded but mostly wraps up in a self-contained plotline, and has relatively low stakes so that there’s room for the narrative to escalate. That doesn’t mean that she doesn’t pose a threat as an antagonist- because she absolutely does- but simply that her behaviour of terrorising people and raising bodies is already the status quo, and she has no grand design or plan of action. Cassandra steps in to change that status quo for the better, but her failing to do so won’t leave anyone any worse off than they already are. Yet with that being said, Alphecca is also built to be Cassandra’s antagonist specifically, so of course there has to be a resolution there.

Alphecca as Cassandra’s antagonist

Alphecca exists to be a foil to Cassandra, so that when you put them together their differences shine brighter. Where Ilione is a foil to Cass in that she’s largely her polar opposite: extraverted, very emotionally sensitive, inexperienced etc, Alphecca is a foil to Cass by being very similar to her but for a few glaring differences. It’s worth noting that while their personalities are pretty different, they share a same jaded perspective on life and struggles with mental health that stem from an ugly ZT origin story. 

Both women were approached by Zhan Tiri during a time they felt powerless, and sided with her over loved ones in an attempt to regain control over their life. They were encouraged to embrace malice and sadism, had their faith in their loved ones undermined and had those insecurities stoked, and all this instability created the perfect storm for them to be easily manipulated and betrayed. Zhan Tiri operates as a cult leader does, seeking out vulnerable people and cutting them off from their remaining support networks until they have nowhere left to run, even if they want to. 

It’s not to say Cassandra wasn’t making her own choices, but this kind of gaslighting shouldn’t be dismissed either. Some people will forever lack sympathy for her, but that’s exactly the point of Zhan Tiri’s manipulation- if nobody’s willing to help you out of the hole you’ve dug for yourself you’re going to be stuck there to rot, so you may as well keep digging in the hope that you might hit gold eventually. 

Alphecca and Cassandra are both victims to Zhan Tiri’s super fun form of control, but the major difference between them was that Rapunzel remained willing to help Cassandra out of that hole. Alphecca didn’t have a Rapunzel, or a Varian, or a Eugene, and instead over time she became twisted and warped into a menace who doesn’t need Zhan Tiri’s encouragement to do terrible things anymore. And that’s what makes these two foils to each other; Alphecca is the monster Cassandra never was but could have easily become if she was never shown compassion. 

Thus the only person who can stop Alphecca is someone who can empathise with her, at least to some degree. In fighting terms, Alphecca has a bottomless bag of tricks up her sleeve and the nature of her undeath makes her essentially immortal. She cannot be conquered, only slowed down, and the more pissed off she gets with you the more volatile and dangerous she becomes. 

Cassandra initially sees Alphecca as a chance to prove herself, both as a force for good and as someone who can rid the world of Zhan Tiri’s legacy. However,  it quickly becomes apparent that Alphecca cannot be defeated through conventional means, because otherwise warriors like Adira (who has encountered Alphecca before) would have been able to deal with the problem. Considering that Alphecca herself has sought out her phylactery to destroy it- with an extra thousand years of hunting up her sleeve- but failed to do so, makes it apparent that she can only be stopped by being reasoned with. But for a lich who hardly remembers the human experience, that’s pretty difficult. 

It ultimately means the only person who can stop her is Cassandra, because the only person who can reason with her is someone who can empathise with her from a place of camaraderie rather than condescension, and recognises that the cycle of violence needs to be broken by compassion and not just violence but harder.  

The Storyline

Basic plotline goes like this:

Early on into her journey Cassandra learns about the bone witch that roams the wilderness and terrorises innocent villagers, desecrates the dead, is probably a cryptid because legends have existed about her for generations, et cetera and so on. When evidence appears that this witch is real Cassandra and decides to investigate, because this is a pretty straightforward “good guy stops the bad guy” situation for her to jump into. (By this point Ilione is also tagging along). 

Their first encounter with Alphecca is pretty tame. They intercept her at a mausoleum, she does a fancy music number/generally has a good time fucking around with them, but ultimately skulks back into the shadows at the end. It’s sort of all in good spirits and Alphecca isn’t ‘defeated’ by any means but still bows out as a show of good sportsmanship. 

Their future encounters are a lot less nice. 

The more Cassandra continues to pursue her, the more pissed off Alphecca gets, and when Alphecca gets pissed off she begins to embrace her sadism and her outbursts become more violent and cause more collateral damage. She lowers herself to underhanded tactics like throwing Cass into a nightmare reality a la Tromus and becomes increasingly sinister. The ‘tentpole’ of this plotline probably marks the shift from Alphecca as a trickster figure into a more dangerous one as Cass and Lio learn that she was also a disciple of Zhan Tiri. 

The situation ultimately comes to a head by the finale, by which point Alphecca is very much unhinged and out for blood. She becomes fixated on Cassandra and does her best to hit below the belt, sniffing out her insecurities about her past with the moonstone and bludgeoning them with a metaphorical sledgehammer, and basically tries to goad her into a complete spiral. 

This is the emotional climax, and the underpinning of Cassandra’s character development in becoming emotionally sound enough to shake it off. It’s at this point she understands what Alphecca is doing; Alphecca is caught in her own eternal maelstrom of emotional torture and latches onto anyone she can drag down with her for the small amount of pleasure it brings. She’s able to recognise those feelings because she can empathise with them and knows exactly what she needs to hear in that moment. 

There’s probably some extended backstory revealed by this point too, going into a little more detail about the way in which Alphecca was caught in Zhan Tiri’s web down to becoming a lich, but of course what’s more important is the resolution. 

With Cassandra getting through to her, Alphecca is able to pull herself together long enough to ease the situation back down again and have a more honest conversation about hope and humanity and compassion and all those good things. Cassandra admits that she can’t do much to ‘fix’ her, but starts by continuing Rapunzel’s legacy and showing forgiveness and compassion to someone who doesn’t think they deserve it. (Alphecca isn’t entirely regretful of all her actions, but does acknowledge that she ought not project her pain onto others anymore.) 

Alphecca Post-S1

Alphecca doesn’t really get a ‘redemption arc’ because honestly I don’t want her to be redeemed. It’s not really a moral stance so much as I believe she’s genuinely disinterested in being a better person, she just has the selfish desire to be able to live happily again. And that’s kind of all she needs. She doesn’t care much about other people, but she’s working on herself and that means squashing the sadism. 

I think it also continues to make a good parallel to Cass: Cassandra is trying to do better not only for herself but by others because she sees it as her own social responsibility, whereas Alphecca just wants to do better for herself and if other people benefit from that, that’s just a bonus. 

Alphecca doesn’t join Cassandra on her travels either, although she does make appearances as a reoccurring character. Cassandra is upfront about the fact that while she wants to help Alphecca, she needs to help herself first, and the damage Al inflicted on her is slow to heal. They’re both in danger of dragging each other down in their own spirals so it’s best that they give each other space, but it’s also very important that they’re able to share their experiences.  It’s a minor struggle between Cassandra and Ilione that Lio doesn’t really understand a lot of Cass’ struggles, although she does try to be sensitive about it. Alphecca provides that alternate perspective: Lio can provide support but little empathy, while Alphecca can provide empathy but little support. 

I’ve also got more Alphecca stuff living in my brain regarding her origins, her own foray with Death and her association with lesser and greater deities, her relationships to other ZT cultists, et cetera et cetera but I’ll probably stop here to keep it succinct. 

But basically over the course of this plotline Alphecca goes from wacky evil villain to really tragic but still evil villain to not really evil villain but still kind of a jerk neighbour that shows up at your house asking for your wifi password acquaintance.

“She gives you light; now you must return the favor with your faith”

New Dream Week day 1 - Sun and Moon

I’ve very deeply thought about Demanitus’ quote from “Lost and Found” and it’s very poetic and makes a lot of sense regarding Rapunzel and Eugene.

Demanitus basically confirmed that Eugene is the moon - so everyone was confused because throughout Season 3, Cassandra had the stone and was labeled as the moon. However, I think it is important to point out that Eugene really is the moon to Rapunzel’s sun - not in the sense of possessing the reverse powers as Cass did, but as the sun’s missing part. The Sundrop and Moonstone were never meant to be contradictory to each other, but complimentary to each other - which is not how Cass sees it, as it was pointed out in the finale’s intro. 

The moon cannot be seen without the sun’s light, so the moon owes that loyalty to the sun. Symbolically, Eugene cannot have light in his life if he did not have Rapunzel. What could the moon do without the sun? But also, without the moon, who would light up the earth at night while the sun isn’t around? Symbolically, the sun and moon are harmonious. The moon and sun are two different lights, one greater and one lesser, but they can not perform their task of lighting up the earth without the other. This is similar to how Rapunzel and Eugene, without each other, have missing gaps. The thing Eugene had always needed in his life was someone to give him the warmth and love, and he only received that when he met Rapunzel - this is similar to how the moon only has light by means of the sun. The thing Rapunzel had always needed in her life was for someone to believe in her and bring out the best in her rather than ignoring her, which was fulfilled when she met Eugene - this is similar to how the moon “brings out the best of the sun” by shining the light it gets from the sun to the earth. By supporting Rapunzel, Eugene indirectly influences Corona, because she is its ruler. Rapunzel and Eugene mutually give each other what the other needed, so really, they give each other light. This makes “I See the Light” even more powerful, because the completion of their lives by means of each other is the theme of the song, and they really do give each other light.

The fact that the moon gets its light from the sun instead of independently shining might symbolize Eugene’s loyalty to Corona instead of being a separate ruler who rules the Dark Kingdom. The way Cass sees it, the sun and moon are contrasted, but according to several characters, like Adira and Demanitus, the Sundrop is powerfully superior to the Moonstone.  Eugene is basically Rapunzel’s second in command - when she can’t be around, she instructs him to take care of whatever she needs. Let’s say Corona is the planet earth, which lives because of the sun (it’s queen, Rapunzel), and when the sun sets for the night, the moon (Eugene) shines instead. He’s not the king of a different kingdom, he’s a secondary leader to Rapunzel’s kingdom. Rapunzel and Eugene are both more powerful together, as together the Sundrop and Moonstone have full power. 

I know that the theme says flat out that the sun and moon are two separate powers, and they wanted to show that Cass was the moon for the sake of conflict, but in a more realistic (and poetic) sense, Eugene is the true moon.

It’s just so symbolic and beautiful.

Hi. I’ve been rewatching season 2. It’s my favourite season. Do you ever do that? I’ve only just noticed but in the intro Rapunzel has made some sketches on the Brotherhood symbol. What do you think she was doing with the sketches?

Honestly, I haven't just sat and rewatched anything more than an episode here or there since the series ended. I don intend to eventually, though.

She was just taking note of the shape, because she saw it on the back of Adira's hand. (And on her clothes.)

favorite episode: I have a feeling the upcoming episode will end up being my favourite, but I also really liked Context is for Kings (Intro to my girl Tilly!), Sanctuary, and Su’Kal. 

saddest death: Gray’s made me the most upset. Hugh’s and Airiam’s were terrible, too, but I think Gray’s being after Hugh’s was not a parallel that I appreciate.

favorite season: The current one 

least favorite season: Instead of season, I’m going to go with two arcs, and they are both Mirror arcs. Mirror!Verse is one of the few squicks I have, and I get REALLY anxious whenever it’s on screen. It’s a good thing it’s so damn pretty, and I’ve figured out that it’s Ok to fast forward shit.

character that everyone else in the fandom loves, but i hate: I don’t hate her, but MU!Georgiou just never clicked with me, which is a shame because I love Yeoh, and I love ladies who could kick my ass. But I think MU!Georgiou gave me too much of “I’m not like OTHER girls vibes, and I really don’t want to be reminded of me from 15 years ago.

Question about bitter snow!! How will you be treating Edmund in later chapters (without too many spoilers of course) bc in canon they set him up as an intimidating adversary then immediately sidelined him to comic relief funny man who talks to himself and personally I wasn't a fan of that so I'm curious on your thoughts about him! :>

in. super general terms:

1 - his intro into the story happens earlier + he’s more antagonistic. (the spirit of eugene’s mom, who in bitter snow is named liora, is also involved here, so the DPE reveal ends up coming from her rather than edmund)

2 - he is obv a key player in the moonless air climax whew

3 - in blooms and sings - first part of the story he continues in an antagonistic role, later [redacted] and then [redacted] leads him to do some heavy soul-searching. i think his arc boils down to figuring out what his true priorities are + his fraught relationship with his son.

(which is true of the entire brotherhood - i think they’re all people who when they commit, they REALLY commit, and all of them have character arcs that sort of hinge on how that trait is a weakness as much as a strength.)

he does still talk to himself and i imagine there’ll be some moments of humor with that here and there (though probably coming more from…he’s got a way of very bluntly and dryly editorializing on whatever’s happening vs the canon thing where it’s just awkwardly supposed to be funny that he’s talking to himself 😐) but like… this is def a trait that stems from the trauma of isolation and even though it’s harmless in and of itself, it reflects a really deep pain and i do plan on digging into that too.

you didn’t ask but while i’m at it i may as well add that adira’s gonna sTiCk ArOuNd (s3 did her so dirty) and hector… i think will surprise folks 🙂

Ranking Tangled the Series Season 2 Episodes

Where I rank these are based on my opinion. In this season, it especially has to do with the best of new dream moments...

1. Destinies Collide: Episode 21

This is the only episode where I react the same way I do when I first watched it. I am still shook with everything that happened. The HIATUS after this was the WORST…waiting to know what happens next. Anyway, to know Eugene’s parents now feels so good. I’m glad Eugene now knows his whole story. Of course, I wish he met his mother. Eugene and Rapunzel never gave up on each other and still loved each other every second in that episode even though Eugene almost betrayed Rapunzel. Even Lance and Casssandra knew Eugene wasn’t trying to hurt her. The ending of this episode, yes I am VERY MAD EVERY TIME I WATCH IT. Overall, this episode was REALLY GOOD and the most SHOCKING episode of all time in the series

2. Beyond the Corona Walls: Episode 1

This episode had my heart all over the place. I was crying. All the songs were beautiful. New Dream was at the next level of love. Eugene finally understood that Rapunzel was still not ready yet because she is waiting to reach her destiny. It’s interesting that Stalyn was the one that made Eugene realize proposing was not the right time. I really hate awkward moments, I hate them so much I have to cover my eyes and there were some awkward moments in this episode.  Anyway, I can go on and on about this episode. It was emotionally amazing.

3. Rapunzel and the Great Tree:Episode 14

This was almost a tie for me with my number 1 choice. I enjoyed this episode very much. Waiting in the Wings and Buddy Song is a bop, many cute New Dream moments (especially when they were sleeping together). Eugene and Lance are such a great duo, It was funny to see them act like they were drunk. Also, RAPUNZEL WENT GOTH.

4. Lost and Found: Episode 20

Lots of cute New Dream moments. Rapunzel gave a birthday for Eugene, she tried to make him happy on his day, Eugene saying he has faith because of Rapunzel…yeah. It was great to finally meet Lord Demanitus. The ending of this episode always has me shook.

5. Vigor the Visionary: Episode 6

The fact this episode started with Eugene and Rapunzel looking at each other with heart eyes, Eugene spinning Rapunzel, and they went out on a date is already on the top of my list. Not only that, but they focused on finding Angry’s fortune together.

6. You’re Kidding Me! :Episode 18

Rapunzel and Eugene being parents in this episode was something we totally needed. I never thought about Eugene being the assertive parent. But, it makes sense. I’m not surprised though that Rapunzel was being the sweet one. Of course, I loved the discussion New Dream had at the end talking about how they were going to be parents…I was like OMGGGGGGG.

7. Rapunzeltopia: Episode 19

The episode where Cassandra meet Zhan Tiri and we didn’t know at the time oooohhh. Anyway, I hate the fact that Eugene in Rapunzels dream was a lot like the actual Eugene. I hate that because I wish some of those moments they had in her dream were real. Rapunzel and Rapunzel was something I didn’t know I needed and I am glad it exists.

8. There’s Something About Hookfoot: Episode 9

I wasn’t expecting hook foot to fall in love with a mermaid. But, the date was cute and it was also cute how they met. Rapunzel and Eugene were adorable together in this episode. Yes, they argued. But, at the end of the day, they agreed with each other and love each other more after setting up this date for hookfoot.

9. Curses! Episode 12

I really loved the encouragement Rapunzel and Eugene shared together in this episode. It was great to hear them talk about conversations they had awhile back. It wasn’t great that Eugene lied to Rapunzel about the tooth. But, he clearly lied to make her happy. So, now we all know that Eugene would literally do anything for Rapunzel, even if it means lying to make her happy.

10. Mirror, Mirror: Episode 17

No surprise Eugene was the first to be trapped in that mirror lol. But, it was funny seeing that other Eugene trying to do the smoulder and Eugene doing the smoulder on the other Rapunzel. Also, how they all reacted to Shorty eating like an actual human being, LOL.

11. The Forest of No Return: Episode 4

Eugene and Rapunzel were so cute in this episode! This was one of those episode where Eugene needs to stop completely relying on only himself and start relying on others. It’s amazing to see how much Rapunzel has changed. I really liked Adira the best in this episode, I feel like this is the only episode we got to really see her personality because in the other episodes she’s in, she seems pretty quiet.

12. Happiness is… Episode 10

This episode was very relatable because I easily get homesick. So, I understand why Rapunzel was fighting for that thing. It was funny when everyone was fighting for it, even Eugene was practicing his smoulder for her and I am the crab that fell lol. I also like how the lanterns ended up on that island and went Rapunzel sent the lantern back, it went back to Corona. So, I’m happy to see that her parents got the lantern.

13. Rapunzel: Day One : Episode 16

So.many.movie.references!!! It was good to see Rapunzel’s past self. She changed so much since she was in that tower. She’s learned so much, explored the outside world, and has become so much stronger. Without this episode, I feel like a lot of us would forget how much she’s changed.

14. King Pascal: Episode 8

The outfits were cute, I love the tree house that Cass and Rapunzel built, and Eugene’s outfit and wet hair is sexy. This felt like a different version of the Pascal Story episode but not as emotional but instead comical. To me, it was cute and funny that Pascal was being treated like a leader, he’s just a chameleon. ;)

15. The Eye of Pincosta: Episode 13

I’m glad they gave more screen time to Stalyn. But, I wish we saw her earlier in the season and Eugene was there. I wanted to hear more about Stalyn and Eugene’s relationship. But, it was barely brought up. Still, it was funny that Eugene got arrested very quickly and amazing that this time Rapunzel sacrificed her life to get the object that would free Eugene and her friends. In the previous episode, Eugene lied to make Rapunzel happy. In this episode, Rapunzel did all she could to free Eugene. I liked how these episodes are right next to each other.

16. Keeper of the Spire: Episode 7

Everyone was so annoyed in this episode and because of that I LOVED it. But, I also felt sorry for them because Calliope was annoying to me.

17. Max and Eugene in Peril on the High Seas: Episode 11

If you are a fan of Eugene, you will love this episode. Since Eugene is my favorite character, this episode made me love him more. I’m really glad he kept that book over his chest because if he didn’t omg what a twist of events this episode could’ve turned into. Also, I loved the graphics in this episode (The book, the knife, the intro title to the episode).

18. The Brother’s Hook: Episode 15

It was great to see they brought back a character from the movie in this episode. The seal wedding was really cute! I shipped these seals and the baby seals are REALLY cute!

19. Freebird: Episode 5

This episode was definitely different. Something I would have never imagined. But, it was interesting to see the characters as birds! I’m not surprised Rapunzel loved flying. Clearly she’ll do anything for flying.

20. Goodbye and Goodwill: Episode 3

Cassandra and Rapunzel’s relationship in this episode was by far the best! Their arguments were hysterical and when they were cuffed together omg, hysterical! Eugene’s drawing of a gopher was so funny and inaccurate! Also, there were some cute New Dream moments.

21. The Return of Quaid: Episode 2

I understand why this episode exists. But, it’s not my favorite. I wish this episode was instead about learning about Eugene and Stalyn’s past. But, they never went into a story about that and I wish they did! Anyway, this episode really showed more of Rapunzel. She really cares about things that really aren’t any of her business. And she saves a town that is a long drive away from Corona! There were a lot of small funny moments between Cass, Eugene, Rapunzel, Lance, and Maximus.

Adira is a siren who grew up in the Glacius manor, a privileged family with centuries of rich magic at their fingertips. Adira wants nothing more than to please her family by following their traditions and acting like a proper, polite Glacius, but it doesn't come to her naturally. 

Every siren she knows can lure humans with their beautiful flawless voices, especially ones that come from powerful families like her. But for some reason, whenever she does it, all that comes out is a mighty squawk, scaring away anybody around rather than seducing them to her side.

When Adira captures Cory in order to prove she can “lure” as per tradition on her sixteenth birthday, she begins to unravel the truth behind her family’s legacy and the dark underbelly in the undersea city of Azune. She realizes she must bring Cory back--along with the thousands of other captured humans-turned-mermaids.
