nanowrimo meme, day 25
DAY 25 - What are the names of at least two of your main characters? How did you choose their names?
two? how about twelve?
being the beta version of chiaki nanami (whose name means one thousand autumns; seven seas), @/bootlcg’s chika narumi’s name (one thousand flowers; the roaring of the sea) is a play on her sister’s in both meaning and spelling.
Poisoned Paradise’s saki fukunaga (blossom, hope; blessed longevity) alludes to her spring-coloured hair and heroic aspirations.
the name of saki’s best friend, tomoyo kariya (Poisoned Paradise), is a homage to tomoyo daidouji from cardcaptor sakura, a character who (like miss kariya) rocks a wavy haircut and is supportive of her gal pal.
i can’t remember where Holding Out for Friday’s heroine ayaka orlando’s got her forename from (all i remember is i really liked the nickname aya), but her surname comes from the protagonist of the pokemon oras demos. the combination of eastern and and western names also separates her from the rest of the americanised-named cast and is a nod to how hoenn is based on an island in japan.
taiga madurai (a formerly-affiliated oc now on @/nindocoded) was originally an orphan named sora (sky [because of her white hair and blue eyes]) until i found an open-for-applications clan in the rp group i was in at the time. the madurai clan’s abilities and backstory suited the character perfectly, so i changed her name from sora to taiga (tiger [inspired by toradora]) to better match their edgier naming trend.
@/leadmedal’s hyejin seo’s given name means either favour/benefit or precious/rare, alluding to how she does the rfa a favour by joining them, benefits from doing so, and has a life-changing experience as a result. as for her family name, it's a common one in korea and pairs nicely with "hyejin”.
though she insists otherwise, four from @/talentcoded is clearly using an alias, which i'm essentially poking fun at her for by giving her such an obvious fake name. using a number as her alias was an idea i swiped directly from seven from mystic messenger, although the “4″ also functions as the “a” in her old url, “shsl-h4cker”, and hints at some character stuff when you learn the meaning of error 404.
also from @/talentcoded, and also with a name i stole from someone else, yuuhi nagai’s first name (setting sun) is taken from the equally gorgeous and mysterious yuuhi kurenai from naruto, with her second name (long well) being an allusion to well-associated japanese spirits like samara from the ring, who yuuhi resembles. ironic, given she’s an exorcist.
kei fujita (@/talentcoded) is an intentionally unisex name for my androgynous agender track star. kei has a whole bunch of meanings that i haven’t commited to a single one of yet, and fujita means “wisteria rice paddy”, which is the closest i could get to “far wisteria”, the meaning of kei’s original surname, endo, which i changed since it made the westernised version of their name sound too much like “kendo”.
the name masami miyamoto (@/talentcoded) combines “become, beautiful” and “base of the shrine” to represent her attitude towards graffiti art. her beta surname had something to do with marketplaces, but i figured that’d better suit a vendor oc.
michi kobayashi (from, you guessed it, @/talentcoded) literally means “righteous way” [through a] “small forest”, which summarises her ninja family backstory to a t.
and finally we have from @/talentcoded’s kai itou, whose forename and surname mashed together spells out his shsl talent, ultimate kaitou (phantom thief).
as you can see, i like having names with meanings! balancing subtext and aesthetics is something i love to do successfully, so a lot of my oc name reflect this :D

nanowrimo meme, day 3
DAY 3 - Pick one of your female characters. Introduce your readers to her, from her point of view and her words only.
oh dear. the following passage of saki from my bnha fanfic Poisoned Paradise describing herself in chapter two is a little outdated, but it’s the best i’ve got on such short notice:
❝  Nothing especially noteworthy happened in my life between the ages of four and thirteen, so I’ll spare you the details. All you need to know is the following:
Firstly, by the time I was five-years-old, I had a good enough handle on my Quirk that I could forgo my gas helmet in favour of a sick mask.
[…]
And finally, I became pseudo-grunge. Soft grunge? Something like that; I’m still a little shaky on the terminology.
My beloved Internet introduced me to alternative fashion, and I took to it like black dye to denim. I wrote it something of a love letter with an image-board blog, but compared to what was on my feed, my personal style was much more casual. Unfortunately, whilst Japan as a whole has numerous subcultures, where I lived wasn’t too experimental. I had to make do with what was accessible: dark clothes and dramatic makeup. Luckily I had friends who steered me away from unflattering panda liner towards a more complimentary smokey eye. At the ripe age of fourteen, I was much more confident with my makeup skills and overall look. I’d also nailed the cat eye.
My parents were convinced I was going through a phase, built with the remnants of my childhood rebellion. I can’t deny that, but it had more to do with creating an image for myself. Not a lot of people naturally had a colour palette like mine, you know? I wanted to make the most of it. So that’s what fourteen-year-old Saki looked like: black and white and green all over. With twintails and blunt bangs, because they were the perfect combination of cute and harsh. And a dash of blush to add colour to my face. And a highlight on my eyes’ inner-corners. And fake ear piercings. And an ever-present face mask that stopped passersby from getting contaminated by my Toxic…
Needless to say I earned a reputation in my tiny town.
Judgemental biddies. ❞
saki’s perspective is meant to convey teenage spunk, with the kind of stubbornness intended to downplay her insecurities. weaselling my way into her head is fun, though it’s easier to do so in roleplay over at @/dokuseiseki than in is in Poisoned Paradise, hence why the former is more active.

nanowrimo meme, day 2
one day late for april 2020.
DAY 2 - What’s the title of your story? Why did you choose the name you did?
nothing i’m working on rn actually has a title yet haha, so here’s the answer for stories i worked on in past nano’s:
- bnha fanfic Poisoned Paradise is 100% a reference to toxic by britney spears, lolll. i was browsing around for things related to poison because of saki’s quirk and that song sorta stuck. it worked out better than imagined though because it also foreshadows how saki finds ua less ideal than it seems… but no spoilers :p
- pokemon alpha sapphire nuzlocke Holding out for Friday is meant to evoke that feeling of trudging through the work week, ready for the weekend. ayaka didn’t feel that way about school, but she certainly feels that way about her pokemon journey.
and whilst we’re at it, here’s the reasoning behind my rp blog urls:
- to repeat the explanation of @/bootlcg, my dangan ronpa beta!chiaki rp blog, from here: bootleg(ged) games are knockoffs of the original which don’t always function the same way, which is how chika feels about herself in comparison to chiaki. also, it’s short and snappy *shrug*.
- bnha rp blog @/dokuseiseki is a combination of the japanese words “doku” (poison), “dokusei” (toxic) and “seiseki” (become/grow/reach; achievement/results), alluding to how saki is a poisonous hero-in-training. i did just google those translations though, so take them with a pinch salt.
- and finally, mystic messenger rp blog @/leadmedal is a pun on “lead” as in the main character or route, and “lead” as in the metal, which is sometimes used in fourth-place medals - fitting, given that hyejin is mc4.
i try to put a lot of thought into my titles, so hopefully these give you extra some food for thought!
