Given the holidays, they both agreed they could have one extra Christmas cookie, though the extra rush of sugar made it a mission to get the kids in bed. Now, she collapsed on the couch, feeling the exhaustion of the day and hauling all their decorations out of the garage. "Mistletoe? You know, you don't need any of that to kiss me," she teased, arms reaching out to him, in an attempt call him closer to her. Without words, asking him - come sit with me. Though their place looked perfect, Eli was right. It was missing that last touch, mistletoe they had hung each year to steal kisses from each other. An unexpected, playful tradition. "Hm, you are so lucky I'm always looking to steal kisses from you." As she spoke, she reached for a small paper bag resting on their coffee table, pulling a fresh bunch of mistletoe, held together by a red ribbon. An eager smile drew on her lips before playfully holding it up in the space between them, and leaning in to press her lips against his. "Merry Christmas, my love." Hesitantly, she pulled away just a bit, her lips still hovering over his. "We should probably still hang the mistletoe though."

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

It bugs me when they portray him as a himbo incapable of doing anything. Sure, he has made his share of mistakes but he's neither stupid nor incapable. Canon villanization and Fanon himbofication are both extreme and hypocritical in the case of Tamlin.

End of the Year Book Asks

25. If you had to give a TEDTalk on a book you read this year, for better or worse, which would it be?

I could write a long discussion about a lot of the books I read, or reread in the case of Chuck Tingle's Straight (his first horror novel) but I think The Glutton is by AK Blakemore is going to be the one that sits with me for years.

It tells a fictionalized version of the life of Tarare, who lived approx 1772-1798. He made a living as an opener for a band of traveling performers, shocking and disgusting the crowd with his ability to eat absolutely anything, including live animals and rocks, and, towards the end of his life, was studied by doctors and documented to have eaten enough for 15 men in one sitting.

Blakemore has this incredibly unique way of writing, where everything is just a little dreamlike, a little separated from the reader like we're seeing Tarare's life through a dirty glass. There's this immense, profound sadness as a throughline, with this young man who just wanted to be loved, and was deprived of it to the point where he seemed to know nothing of right and wrong - only whether he was accepted or mocked. He's not a bad person in his own mind, and he rarely seems to actively wish other people ill, no matter how justified, but he's got a sort of amorality that comes with just being so completely separate from the norm. There's more to it than what I'm saying here, with a bit of discussion on his sexuality and mental disorder, but nothing is ever given a name/diagnosis.

I have more to say about it, and I could offer actual critical discussions on the way the prose and pacing support or fail the story, but overall it's just....so much? It's so much. I'm gonna read it again.

I don't recommend it for anyone who can get squeamish about hyper/omniphagia. There are also scenes of emotional/physical abuse, medical abuse (both well intentioned and sadistic) and just an all around bad time.

My character’s worst memory of your character.

It was a few decades after their turn, and they had differences of opinion on how to continue to navigate the world. Before that, they had stuck mostly together. Viktoria wanted to travel, to learn, to be her own person away from her siblings, and she hated to see who her brother had become. It weighed on her for years until it came to a head in a vicious, angry fight that.. unfortunately left a city in ruins. Viktoria was young, and it was her fault. But she hates the fact that she was so up her own ass back then-- she's grown now.

Lara thinks it's a stupid memory, but its one she goes back to all these years later. When they were young, they'd gotten into a big fight - as they often did - but it ended up with them yelling at each other, and Lara storming out of the house. She ended up wandering the streets when she shouldn't have been, and fell and scraped herself real bad on rocks and bushes. She thought it was God punishing her for being mean to Daniel, and went home and cried the whole time he helped bandage her up.

Hello! Happy STS!

Is there an unexpected aspect/element of writing that you only had realized exists/is important after you started writing yourself?

Don't ask me how long this was sitting in my inbox thank you SO MUCH for sending it in!!

I've been writing longer than I knew about long division, but in the past few years I've really learned how to write and finish a first draft, and how momentum mattered more than finding the right words or setting the perfect scene. I can overwrite, or throw a billion details in to pick and choose when I come back to it. It's so much easier to go back and edit than it is to make it sound good right off the bat, and I'm really glad it's a skill I've been able to build.

More than that, I've found how important it is to just have fun. I have all these overarching fantasy dramas that every writer wants to make, but I've leaned so hard into comedy over the past few years and it's so much easier. Telling a story (tm) is secondhand to just having a good time, and honestly 10/10 do recommend.
