Ma'am. Elena's brows first dipped then rose, a mixture of confusion and delight playing across her features. Had he seriously just called her ma'am? Well, that... That was a first. Bracing her hands against the countertop, she blew out a breath, giving a slow shake of her head. "Uh, no? No, I don't think I have." She was half-tempted to tell him she had a Kappa in the backroom, splashing about in the limestone-mottled bucket they used to clean the soda hose just to see how he'd react. "But it can get pretty loud in here, makes it easy to miss what's going on outside."
She wasn't trying to be helpful. In fact, Elena was trying to be of as little help as possible. He was only human, she was a deity—something that should've tipped the scales decidedly in her favor. And yet everything about him, from the badge he wore clipped to his uniform to the shiny squeak of his police-issued shoes, filled her with jittery unease.
"Should you be walking around announcing that, officer?" Some of her - albeit not present - co-workers were human, the oblivious-to-all-things-supernatural kind and yes, this was absolutely a preemptive attempt to direct his attention elsewhere before he could find something to tie her a noose out of.
It was a late-night emergency call. The police car was parked in the street as he walked door to door, mind and eyes alert, despite the dark circles beneath. Gabriel was glad for the task, doing his duty for the city once again, and keeping both communities safe.
He entered the bar, surprised that it wasn't closed yet, and scanned the interior for any sign of life (magic or not). "Sorry to disturb you, ma'am," he answered politely, feeling a pang of guilt that he was keeping the young woman from going home. "We've gotten some calls about disturbances tonight. Have you seen anything out of the ordinary? Any unusual animal activity?"
Out of the corner of his eye he could see the faint shimmer of light, which he remembered was characteristic for deities. "I'm Officer Moore, with the VCPD special division for supernatural cases," he explained, hoping it would gain the deity's trust and make his search easier.
