Meta on students that have gotten Albus' attention? Good or bad? (from your own ideas, ones mentioned in canon, OCs that you can think of, etc.)
whereas horace’s ‘slug club’ was full of those who had significant connections in society, or possessed the ability to create such connections due to their charm / intellect / talent / etc, albus’s collection of students ( while he never had a slug club, in the way that slughorn did with elaborate parties and dinners, he did have a small group of students that were dubbed “dumbledore’s favorites” while he was a professor, despite how albus would forever deny having favorites ) were most often the exact opposite. albus always has a soft spot for outcasts (hagrid and newt for instance ) and his ‘favorites’ tend to reflect that more than not, leaving other teachers to wonder why albus was so fond of these students in the first place ( for example, if he was a professor in harry’s era neville, hermione, and luna would have been the first ones adopted into albus’s little group because of how shunned they all were initially upon starting hogwarts ). of course that isn’t to say that all of his students were outcasts in that sense, after all minerva was one of albus’s all-time favorite students and she wasn’t much by the way of an outcast, she was merely exceptionally clever ( in general, but also in albus’s particular subject ) and brave with a heart of gold underneath it all. honestly ? all a student had to be was kind / empathetic and have a passion about something, need some sort-of assistance in some way, and albus would hand over his attention. . . . he has a habit of getting too invested in people; he’s meddlesome, okay, he can’t help it he just wants everyone to reach their best potential. but those who were actually one of his favorites, out of canon characters, while he was a professor were just hagrid, newt, minerva , and most likely majority of those in the original order.
as for those that got his bad attention ?  honestly tom may be the only one who truly got albus’s bad sort-of attention. after all, he’s the only one who actively tried ( and succeeded ! )  to hurt and murder other students. albus is a fairly understanding person, particularly toward children, and as long as they weren’t trying to continually hurt other students on purpose, albus wouldn’t see any particular reason to focus on them. certainly there were students he didn’t like, but that is bound to happen out of all the years albus has spent teaching.
unfortunately, i don’t have any OC’s developed except for, like, aberforth’s children dlsjghlgjghsggjfg which don’t count for this question.
it’s only as professor that albus really had favorites or even really had major direct interaction with his students. he directly taught them, and so was more involved in their lives. as headmaster, albus typically left student matters in the hands of the heads of each house. harry ( in general ) having private lessons with albus was odd --- this was something albus did pretty frequently as a professor ( minerva’s animagus lessons; i picture him teaching students wandless magic, etc ) but not as headmaster. in general, he drew away from the students of hogwarts when he became headmaster, focusing on the world outside with the international confederation of wizards, etc. plus with wars going on, albus really wasn’t able to develop any close relationships / favorites with any students as headmaster. the only one that got close before harry was probably remus.
basically: albus had favorites as a professor and would be their Lifetime Mentor as a result, helping them develop their passions, writing them recommendation letters, keeping in contact post hogwarts, etc. and, unless a student was actively trying to murder other students, he wouldn’t really give them attention outside of disciplinary-esque / scolding-esque actions.
