It's slow, for once, in the little convenience store he works part time at. Scary looking guy like him, covered in scars and whorls of dark, bold ink that peek from beneath his shirt at times, barely needs to talk to customers as he restocks shelves — preferring the night shifts, the silence, and ultimately, the peace that comes with honest work. What a surprise when weeks ago a young lady tapped him on the arm and held out her notebook, asking for a specific product in a neat script. What a delight it was to see her eyes brighten when he answered by the motion of his hands, albeit stiff; the two missing fingers on his right hand not at all lessening the coherence of the signed words. He's out of practice, but it's easy enough to tell, down two aisles and on the shelves near the back of the store, and then help her find what she needed.

Now, dusting the dirt off his palms on work-wrinkled pants, Kenshin grins and repeats the particular (vulgar) sign before laughing, large form bending over to pick up another box.
