ERICSTANE FIBULA Roman brooch, inscribed IOVI AVG and VOT XX
The word PORTO is scratched on the underside.
The inscription refers to the twentieth anniversary of Emperor Diocletian's reign in 303 C.E. It may have been one of the symbols of office of Western Roman Emperor Constantius Chlorus (305-306 C.E.) lost during his Caledonian expedition in the year of his death.
Found in peat at Ericstanebrae in 1787.
