just the fact that el feels like a monster around mike while mike makes will feel like he isn’t a mistake should be enough to prove byler endgame on its own. end of story.

The way the Duffers portrayed Will being in love with Mike was actually really smart imo. They set it up so that no one can really complain when they get together.
They showed Will’s obvious feelings for Mike, but they didn’t let him act on them, therefore beating the “home wrecker” allegations. They went as far as having him try to help mend Mike and El’s relationship to prove that he never tried to get in between them. No one can say that Will “stole” Mike or did anything wrong.
They also put in just enough subtext on Mike’s part to show that he might have feelings for Will as well, but they made sure to keep it from looking like he was cheating. They made sure that Byler scenes has enough tension to be noticeable, but they made sure to steer clear from potential cheating on Mike’s part.
They also made sure to highlight Mike and El’s relationship problems and they made it clear that even with Will trying to help, their relationship just isn’t working out. In fact, they’ve been building up their problems and incompatibility for two seasons. This allows people to understand that they wouldn’t have ended up together in the end anyways, so that if/when Byler gets together, no one can say that they randomly broke up Mike and El in S5 just for Byler.
In conclusion, if S5 is done right, S4 is the perfect set up for Byler getting together, and people won’t be able to say that they didn’t see it coming.
