as somebody who has been to a private school with a uniform i LOVE when rtc productions let all the characters wear their uniforms differently. cause thats so real there are usually a few different options you can pick from and you mix and match
in my personal experience, most girls would wear a white polo with a school crewneck sweatshirt over and a plaid skirt, and most guys would wear a school polo with khakis, but still everybody wore something different. idk i just think it is so accurate to real life and from a costuming standpoint, makes the characters appear a lot more dynamic and individual and i love it
I was getting ready for a heritage celebration for graduation (I just completed my MSW) and was watching Bridgerton whilst getting ready. I am Filipino and I wore a Filipiniana to the celebration. You can not tell me that Penelope's sleeves are not giving Filipiniana. I cannot unsee it. Those Filipiniana sleeves are also known as butterfly sleeves. It's Penelope season of being a butterfly. Once again, I cannot find the stills I need from the intro titles with the butterfly coming out of the chrysalis, but here are evidence of the sleeves.
Those sleeves are starched to high heavens and shaped, you guessed, like a butterfly. Regency sleeves can be puffy. But they don't stand up and are typically rounded. Examples from painting from the era. (I do get that the designers are only referencing the period enough for audience to recognize it's a period drama reminiscent of the regency period.)
But then Filipinianas are those high puff and structure sleeves. The butterfly sleeves in a historical and modern styling.
Penelope's sleeves are giving me those iconic butterfly sleeves and I need to know if the costume designers did that on purpose. I rewatch the InStyle of interview with the designers and they did not say. I have questions!
So happy to finally show off my final piece for the Tome of Pacts zine I feature in.
This is Hagne, the Herald of Rot, and faithful servant to her Patron, Cicardia. Her look was inspired by several things -- death masks, pomegranates, worn bronze, flies and centipedes. The butterflies she carries feed on death and decay. Hagne herself felt the cold embrace of the grave, but was blessed to find herself given another chance. She will not fail.
I am so honored to have been a part of this project, and this is one of my favorite pieces to date. I hope you guys enjoy it as well. :)
