Pink Floyd’s 8th studio album was released in the US on 1 March 1973 (and in the UK on 2 weeks later).
Recorded in 2 studio sessions in May 1972 and March 1973, recording engineer Alan Parsons utilized state-of-the-art studio techniques of the time, including 16-track recording and mixing. Parsons also brought in Clare Torry to provide vocals on “The Great Gig in the Sky.”
Storm Thorgerson (and his company Hipgnosis) designed the album jacket, under the direction of Richard Wright, and once again (for the 3rd straight release) provided no mention of the band or band photos on the outside packaging, to the displeasure of the record company.
The album was an immediate success, however, selling more than 500,000 in the US within the first month. It topped the US chart for 1 week in the US (28 April 1973) and has gone on to sell more than 45 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all-time.
